Alpha-1

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the fictional character. For other uses, see Alpha-1 (disambiguation)

Alpha-1 is a fictional Grey Dog Comics superhero. The character was created by writer Clarity. His first appearance was in Grey Dog Comics #76-77. The character was originally conceived as a back-up for Tech Head but sales of issues #76-77 prompted the editors to change their plans and launch a solo series. Alpha-1 #1 was released in December 2011.

[edit]

Creation

In 2011, Grey Dog Comics editors were looking for a way to boost sales in the flagging Tech Head comic book series. Current editor Derek B envisioned a revamp of the title by bringing in other battlesuits with amazing powers, however due to the slow burning and later detested storyline written by Astil involving Tech Head in space, Derek B instead hired writer Clarity and tested the waters with Alpha-1 in Grey Dog Comics #76. Somewhat similar to Tech Head, Alpha-1's battlesuit was designed to both compliment and contrast the aging outfit of Tech Head. Alpha-1's suit was designed to draw energy from the sun and channel it outwards as the user desired whereas Tech Head's just enhanced the strength of the user.

[edit]

Origins

Millions of years before the Earth was formed, a group of beings called the Alpha's maintained a level of peace throughout the galaxy by using a nearby suns powers to power their unique battlesuits designated Alpha's. The battlesuits have the potential to turn any thought into reality. Whilst out patrolling, Alpha-1 is attacked by an another unseen member of the Alpha's and sent pummeting towards the nearby Earth. Meanwhile on Earth, a jobless and destitute widow called Jack Teman is contemplating suicide but before he jumps, he sees what he thinks is a meteor crash nearby. Upon investigating, Jack stumbles upon the dying Alpha-1 suit occupier who grabs Jack's hand and mutters 'Avenge me!' before finally passing on. The empty suit begins to break apart and begins attaching itself to Jack who struggles but cannot remove it. The suit then communicates with Jack telling him that he was chosen because he had nothing to live for here on earth but with training he could become a honoured member of the Alpha's. Jack 'politely' snubs the invite and decides to take out some anger on the streets where his family were murdered.

[edit]

Publication History
Volume 1

Volume 1 has the tagline 'Origin' and follows Alpha-1 as he takes his first steps into the superhero world. It deals with his attempts to figure out how to use the suit that he has gained and how to manage the energy levels with it. In this 6 Issue mini-series he encounters Marquess, PsychoSis, Ace Topspin and Beamer, who he does manage to defeat although barely. His initial encounter with other superheroes goes very wrong when Sgt Steel attacks him. The volume ends after the defeat of Beamer and Alpha-1 accepting the role as a hero.

Volume 2

Instead of a continuous narrative, Volume #2 contains several two part stories and some self contained issues. The 1st story-arc brought back PyschoSis from Volume #1 and her partner in crime NeuroSis

VERY NICE!! What took me a three part Issue#0 you just achieved with one wikipost. Sounds good, I look forward to reading :D
Thanks. Every diary that i do always seems to have some concept behind it (be it a specific story premise or design). I've seen other diaries here going into long dialogues and it was something i was keen to avoid, hence the synopsis instead

If I could actually do arty things, I'd totally steal this idea. As it is, this is a really cool idea on how to launch a CBH dynasty.
Its actually really easy. Print screen, paste then edit. Feel free

Heading back into Diddly Squat, his suit advises him to follow a set of directions and is led to an alley where he finds Marquess standing over Sgt Steel (see Grey Dog Comics #78 for more details). Sgt Steel was attacked and left semi conscious with the vampire looking to taste blood. Marquess' bloodlust is in overdrive and he attacks Alpha-1 who is shocked when his fists start glowing with energy. Alpha swings at Marquess and sent the vampire flying through a wall. He pursues but Marquess has recovered and vanished. However upon returning to where his victim was, Alpha finds Sgt Steel gone as well.

Alpha-1: Origin Part #5 (Volume 1, Issue 5)

[edit]

Plot

Its dusk on the day after the fight with Ace Topspin and with the suit finally recharged, Alpha/Jack finally recovers and stumbles out the alleyway. This issue deals mainly with the suit informing Jack of its limitations. Whilst it can manipulate the energy as the user requires, it requires discipline and focus to use correctly. Any attack used without correct focus and motivation will never be as powerful as one focused in body and mind. The suit explains that Jack was chosen because he had reached his lowest ebb and that bouncing back from here would help him grow into the suit and his powers.

The suit then warms of nearby action and sends Jack off in that direction to find the Marquess again. The vampire had defeated Scot's Guard and was getting ready to devour. Using a combination of physical attacks and energy, Alpha sends Marquess packing again.

[edit]

Notes

 • Inital reception for the issue was around 95% above the target levels for this level of comic.
 • Marquess has now appeared in the series twice

So.. How are people finding this.. So far i've completed 65 issues but im struggling a little with motivation to post up more (especially when im busy playing around a DC mod and building a X-Men mod)

It's good, and the style is different from other current CBH diaries, which is nice. Visually it could be a bit more appealing, even if it was simply a 75x75 picture of everyone's headshot.

Just a thought :)
