The Donald Trump purchase of the American Wrestling Assocation

Jealousy is a funny thing in the business world. The day of Wrestlemania 4 it seemed like everything was going perfectly for Vince McMahon and his WWF. McMahon watched on as a tournament occured to crown his brand new WWF Champion (Macho Man Randy Savage) in a skybox along side Donald Trump. Trump was mesmerized by the grand spectacle Vince McMahon had turned wrestling into. Colorful characters, greek gods in spandex and the most entertaining show on Earth. Vince and Donald had begun discussions to host Wrestlemania 5 yet again at Trump's famous Trump Plaza... That was until Donald informed Vince that the ink just finished drying on papers for his own wrestling company.

You see Donald Trump was a business mogul at a young age. After dominating the Real Estate World, investing money into all the right stock markets and even building his own Casino/Hotel, it would seem that Donald was looking for his next challenge. Wrestlemania 4 was just a test to see how wrestling would end up doing in his venues. From what he could tell it would do well. Trump had been in talks with multiple wrestling companies across the USA and most of them seemed interested in a buyout but the thing that Trump wanted was to have a guy run the show that halfway understood wrestling but yet could also put on a suit and a tie and make people believe he understood business. Right whenever it seemed as if he wasn't going to be able to seal the deal he flew to Minnesota and met with the Gagne family. Verne and his son Greg were holding onto the last bit of money they had tied into the AWA and knew they were either going to sell it or it would be history sooner rathern than later. Trump knew the AWA was the company he would buy out. Logically it made the most sense with a 90 minute time slot on ESPN already in place. During the build up to WM4, Trump would be at every single AWA TV Taping studying and learning some things about the business of wrestling. The AWA wasn't quite as grand as Vince McMahon's WWF but with Trumps deep pocketbook that could change. Well Trumps Pocketbook along with his new... Apprentice...

http://www.tomzenk.net/nicerugeric_jpe.jpg

Eric Bischoff had just been a fill-in announcer/salesman for the AWA's Syndicated Television programming. Not exactly someone who was a "Wrestling guy" but he fit the profile Trump wanted. Trump had told the Gagnes to send there 10 best guys to interview with him about where they think they can take the AWA. Most of them wanted the same old same old that the AWA had become notorious for but Bischoff had a vision in mind that Trump loved. Bischoff was going to do the exact same thing Vince McMahon had become famous for... poach all the local talent from territorys and start towards National Expansion.

Donald Trump made the deal with the Gagnes and promised them that the AWA's tradition and rich history would be protected and he would play business by the rules. In the meantime he sent Bischoff with a big pocketbook and told him sign stars up with a start date of December 1988. If that wasn't shady enough he told Bischoff to book up until November of 1988 for Television and make an announcement that November would be a month off for the AWA.

What really was about to occur was the complete repacking of the AWA to fit the mold of a Trump Investment. To think... all this started at a Wrestlemania.

Following the events of Wrestlemania 4, the wrestling world was in shock to discover the purchase of the AWA by Donald Trump. Everything seemed normal leading up to the October Week 4 1988 AWA TV Tapings... until after the tapings were over Trump made his presence known for the first time at an AWA All Star Wrestling Taping.

"There have been rumblings about my purchase of the American Wrestling Association for the past 6 months. The rumours you have heard are true. I have purchased the AWA with the intent of competing with Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation within the next two years. I have hired AWA Announcer Eric Bischoff as a consultant to American Wrestling Association and the new head booker of the American Wrestling Assocation. We are taking the month of November off to repackage some things within the inner workings of the AWA... including the roster. The sheets I am posting on this wall is the official new roster of the American Wrestling Assocation. If your name isn't on this list its because you have failed to impress me, Mr. Bischoff or the fans of professional wreslting in the past 6 months and that means your services are no longer required here and YOU ARE FIRED."

==============================================

The AWA Roster looked significantly different. More star power, younger talent and hungry guys. Many questions had to be answered such as "How did Bischoff/Trump get these guys from the WWF and NWA?" or "Bischoff and Trump really kicked Baron Von Raschke, Verne and Greg Gagnes, Lerry Hennig, Buddy Rode, Doug Summers and Sgt. Slaughter to the curb with no questions asked?"

One thing was for sure. Bischoff and Trump had come into the game ready, willing and able to play ball.

Decided to take some time (For backstory purposes) to explain some of my signings in a more logical manner...

Once the new AWA Roster had hit the dirt sheets the wrestling world had exactly one month to react before it hit television. Many were in shock that so many of wrestling's hottest acts had jumped over to work for an unproven commodity in the wrestling world (Eric Bischoff). Money talks though as Ricky Steamboat (Who had announced his retirement from wrestling shortly after Wrestlemania 4) signed a deal on to be featured heavily as the AWA's Number One Babyface.

Roddy Piper was a big shock to the wrestling world as well. Believed to have been done with wrestling after his Wrestlemania 3 appearance, he to would be tempted by money after Eric Bischoff offered him a deal with a payout of $30,000 a month. Piper and Steamboat were the first two big stars signed to contracts but both were told to keep mouths shut about it as December would be the actual debut date of the repackaged AWA. Unsuprisingly, Roddy Piper's deal has been signed to promote him heavily as the Number One Heel.

Terry Funk would be another signing that kind of shook the wrestling world. Funk (Always an NWA man) had remained shockingly loyal to the NWA throughout his entire career but a recent stint in All Japan Pro Wrestling left Funk sour on the Crockett group as he waited and waited on a phone call from the Mid-Atlantic group. Bischoff jumped on this and with an offer of $15,000 a month (Guaranteed with merchandise bonuses/gate bonuses) and a main event push... Terry Funk was now an AWA Employee.

Harley Race was somewhat of a last minute acquisition for the AWA. It was discovered that his contract with Vince McMahon would end in November of 1988. Race (In the twilight of his career) had asked for Vince to write him off of Television. At 45 years old he couldn't keep up with the demanding road schedule of Vince McMahon's New York Empire. Race signed a deal similar to Funk's with the agreement he would only appear on Television or special house shows. Unlike most of the contracts which were a standard 2 years, Race had agreed to a solid 5 year contract with the intent to end his in-ring career soon and be regulated to a managerial role/help with some of the younger talent. It is believed upon debut of the new AWA Television Programming that Race will be put with a young talent that AWA Management is grooming for a future Main Event spot.

The British Bulldogs were another last minute signing. Initially they were believed to be headed to Japan after WWF Survivor Series 1988 (Due to Dynamite Kids backstage problems with Jacques Rougeau) but Eric Bischoff offered both a good deal with House Show participation on a voluntary basis and set up a deal with All Japan Pro Wrestling for them to appear on some of there shows as well. This deal would end up with them getting big All Japan money and $10,000 a month guaranteed from the AWA. With the further intent of Bischoff featuring them as heels in America (Something that Vince McMahon had refused to do).

The Von Erich Brothers may have been the most surprising signing of them all. Kerry and Kevin were World Class loyal through and through. However due to recent financial woes the writing was on the wall for World Class. After talking extensively with Bischoff and even Trump the handsome boys from Denton County, TX agreed to deals with the AWA to be featured on National Television.

"The Russian Nightmare" Nikita Koloff was another last minute signing. Koloff had told the NWA he was taking a sabbatical from wrestling due to his wife fighting Hodgekins disease. Eric Bischoff had heard word of this and reached out to Koloff offering him a contract that would feature insurance benefits for his entire family, no house show participation and a job that would be conveniently close to his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With mounting medical bills and a family to provide for... Koloff agreed to the deal.

Eddie Gilbert and Missy Hyatt had been featured more and more in the National Wrestling Alliance but never quite featured the way either one would like and with Gilbert being the journeyman wrestler he was... Gilbert quickly signed a deal with Bischoff. Followed behind him was Shane Douglas who had become somewhat of a protege of Gilbert. Douglas had also appeared on NWA Television but was mainly paying dues as a young blue chipper babyface. Bischoff promised Douglas a more prominent role as one of the AWA's Top Young guys.

Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy would be signed pretty easily as well. Hayes and Gordy had traveled across the United States like brothers. Hayes agreed to a contract before Gordy was ever contacted but his stipulation was Bam Bam Terry Gordy be brought in as well. Interestingly enough Hayes was listed as a face and Gordy as a heel on the initial roster. How long can a Freebirds reunion be from happening?

Scott Hall had a run in the AWA earlier in the 80s that ended on a sour note after Hall had seen the ship was sinking and his career wasn't going very far. Hall had been on tour with New Japan when Bischoff reached him about a contract. Hall agreed to it due to being able to return to the States. Hall's only stipulation was to be featured as a more "rugged" heel and no more pretending to be AWA's replacement to Hulk Hogan.

Scott Steiner had been paying his dues in the Independants across the United States. It was believed by many insiders of the NWA that he would debut at Starrcade 1988 but Steiner would end up signing a deal with the AWA at the last second after money talked a little bit more than family. Steiner is another young star who is eyeballing a big push.

Eddie Guerrero would sign a deal based on his brother Chavo's word to Bischoff that Eddie could be something special. Eddie and Chavo are believed to be in line for a good tag team run provided both men can get over with a crowd that is incredibly unfamilar with there lucha libre style.

Will probably be wrong on both of these, but we'll try to do better once the booking becomes more clear:

I'm assuming Shane Douglas is going to be the youngster Race takes under his wing. If that's the case, too early for Race to lose to him. I could see a longer program, with Race elevating Douglas. By the way, I was always a fan of Douglas, so I'm happy about that.

The British Bulldogs will beat RnR Express. Not sure if this is a long term program, but even if it's not, what a way to make a splash for The Bulldogs.

Shane Douglas vs. Harley Race But a fighting defeat for Douglas that impresses the veteran.

The British Bulldogs vs. Rock N Roll Express Could also be a no-contest/double DQ/whatever as the Bulldogs drop a DQ loss to emphasise their new, heelish attitude and set up a long-term feud with the RNRs in the process.

I'm surprised you let Sarge go, and the Gagnes would have been valuable legacy characters, in the short-term at least, to help emphasise the changes... but until the first show is posted there's no way of knowing how much you want to respect the AWA past.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the AWA, although they were all-but-done by the time I started following wrestling. Still, hopefully this can take off.

Such a big Douglas mark its unbelievable. I know a lot of guys blame this, that or the other for lack of success but Shane had a lot of potential that was squandered for years.

My main goal with letting Sarge/the Gagnes go is to set up as Bischoff/Trump as somewhat hatable characters in the dynasty. With the bullshit that Bischoff pulled in WCW when he took over it was clear he had no intention on caring about burning bridges. I plan on doing more backstory stuff and maybe even some "Wrestling Observer" style newsletters to build tension between Trump/Bischoff and the old guard of wrestling. I have no real intention of respecting the AWA Past. Or having the characters respecting it rather. Bischoff pissed all over the WCW's rich heritage... he would have done the same with AWA. And Trump? Hes a money mark!

As far as booking style goes want to aim at a very much more modern approach to the AWA Style. One of the biggest reasons the AWA fell under is because it never evolved past 1978. So the purpose here is that Bischof gives a product that has evolved... perhaps a bit to much at times for the simple minded wrestling fans of yesteryear?

AWA All Star Wrestling I guess is technically more the "B" Show of the group with a 60 minute time slot while Championship Wrestling is the A one with a 90 minute time slot. I don't really plan on making All Star a bad show though as they can both be useful in pushing storylines.

Right now I have all my major storylines leading up to a March of 1989 show... Crown the first champions at that show and blow off some feuds between the AWA Guys. I really like alternate realities that are incredibly different from reality all stemming from just one action. Trump purchasing AWA would have been a huge action at that point in time. Can't wait to simulate the game and gun for that number 2 spot harder versus Turner. An early 90s Millionare war over control of the Global wrestling scene could have been epic!

All Star Wrestling

December Week 1 1988

Live from the Island Grove Events Center

A short video hyping up the opening match between Shane Douglas and Harley Race plays. The AWA has seemed to stepped up in video production value.

Harley Race defeats Shane Douglas in 11:02 with a Piledriver

Race defeated Douglas but not without a fight. Douglas threw everything he knew how to through at Race. A Crossbody off the top, dropkicks and an attempt at a belly to belly suplex. Race's veteran ways proved to be to much for Shane and he ended up sealing the deal just after the 11 minute mark!

After the match Race picks up Douglas and begins to assult him! Before long he attempts to set up for another Piledriver!? Before he can execute it Michael "PS" Hayes runs from the back for the save breaking up the Piledriver. The damage has been done to young Douglas though!

Nikita Koloff defeats Action Jackson with a Bearhug in 1:23

Koloff wasted no time going after Action Jackson. After toying with him and throwing him around the ring, Nikita locked in a vicious bearhug and put away young Jackson.

Kamala defeats Tom Zenk with a Giant Splash at 10:20

Unexpectedly solid match between fun Midcard babyface Zenk and monster Kamala. Physcholoy based around Zenk trying to fly higher than Kamala. Zenk went to the well one to many times though and ended up getting put away after missing a top rope dropkick. This allowed Kamala to end the match with a running splash to Zenk!

A pre-taped video is shown of Jerry "The King" Lawler. Lawler explains he was one of the few true AWA Superstars left in the company. Lawler says the last time the AWA Fans saw him he was a Champion and a God. He explains that was all taken from him in one day when Donald Trump purchased the company. He was stripped of his title and was lucky to have a job at the end of the day. He says most would have been upset and gone after Trump but it has humbled him. He promises from now on he will do what is right for the AWA and its fans!

A quick hype video is played hyping up the Rock N Roll Express vs. British Bulldogs match!

The British Bulldogs defeated The Rock N Roll Express following interference from Diamond Dallas Page and Eddie Gilbert at 15:11

A hotly contested bout between two of the best tag teams in the world. Very evenly matched. The RNR Express got the advantage early on with dropkicks and crossbodys galore on the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs however ended up showing a mean streak of sorts in the match with headbutts, running knees and close handed punches! This would allow Davey and Dynamite to keep Ricky Morton isolated through most of the match. Morton would end up fighting back and getting a hot-tag out to Gibson who came in like a house of fire! Punch, punch, clothesline, clothesline, dropkick and a running cross body block to Davey Boy and Dynamite! Gibson was on fire! Before long Gibson had Dynamite in the ropes and knocked him out of the ring with a running clothesline. Gibson tagged to Morton and both men climbed opposite turnbuckles looking to put away Davey Boy with what could have ended up as a big double team high flying manuever but before anything could be done... Dynamite Kid pulled the referee down on the floor with him to complain about Gibson sending him over the top rope... whilst this was happening Eddie Gilbert, Missy Hyatt and Diamond Dallas Page run to ringside with Gilbert crotching Gibson on the ropes and DDP taking out Ricky Morton with a hard right handed loaded with all sorts of rings and diamonds! This gives Davey Boy time to recuperate and roll over just in-time to pin Ricky Morton to get an incredibly tainted win!

After the match Gilbert, Hyatt, Page, Smith and Dynamite Kid join in the ring together. Missy has a bag and hands each man a shirt that says Hot Stuff Incorporated on it. The four men put there shirts on and begin to pose for the hot and angry crowd but before this can go to much further... new AWA Owner Donald Trump enters into the ring. Trump demands to know whats going on here. Gilbert grabs the microphone and explains he and his corporation are here to rule over the AWA! Trump says he will not stand for this! *Fans erupt* The AWA is a company for the people and by the people and he will not watch four goons destroy that philosophy! Trump gets up in Gilberts face but before anything happens Gilbert explains he has something in the bag for Trump. Gilbert pulls out a Hot Stuff Incorporated T-Shirt and hands it to Trump... TRUMP PUTS IT ON!!!! Trump explains that the AWA that all these people once knew is dead and gone. It has been replaced by a corporate mega-giant that Trump is funding and making sure is a success. No more guys who look like they should be in the sauna at the YMCA instead of a wrestling ring. The AWA's Old Guard has been replaced by new, young and exciting stars that can and will deliver the best product possible. In fact anyone who can't abide by Trump's new rules with have to deal with his other new corporation first hand... Hot Stuff Incorporated is here to enforce, protect and serve Donald Trump in every way possible! Trump then thanks Gilbert for the cooperation and tells him later tonight on ESPN's AWA Championship Wrestling he will be rewarded with a Main Event match against Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat! Hot Stuff Incorporated looks pleased as AWA All Star Wrestling comes to a DRAMATIC end!

AWA Championship Wrestling on ESPN is just a few short moments away! After the shocking actions of Donald Trump and his new Hot Stuff Incorporated on All Star Wrestling, AWA Owner Donald Trump has made a match between Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert! The Dragon however is no pushover talent and will definitely not be bullied by the antics of Gilbert and his gang!

After the hotly contested bout between Shane Douglas and Harley Race, Race viciously attacked Douglas and went for another Piledriver on the up and coming star but Michael "PS" Hayes wasn't about to sit back and watch an attack like that unfold. See Michael Hayes in action as he takes on one half of the "Destruction Crews" Mike Enos! Hayes has also promised to address the Douglas/Race situation!

The Pride of Denty County, TX Kerry and Kevin Von Erich will debut on AWA Championship Wrestling taking on fellow Texans from El Paso Chavo and Eddie Guerrero. American Wrestling Association

Championship Wrestling

December Week 1 1988

Live from the Island Grove Event Center

The show begins with Donald Trump in the ring. Trump explains that as the owner of the AWA he is here to make sure the new AWA doesn't fall back into the same old ways of old. He furthermore states that the Rock N Roll Express are a talented team but the example needed to be made to the entire locker room and they just happened to be the unfortunate victims of said example. Trump then introduces the man he believes will be the face of the AWA!!! "Rowdy" Roddy Piper! Piper comes out to a strong heel reaction and explains that Piper is a man that plays by his own rules and is a wild hot and fiery tempered Scotsman... but he is also a business man... so while he will play by the rules of Mr. Trump... he also plays by his own rules! Trump offers his hand to Piper and they shake on it as AWA Championship Wrestling cuts to a commercial!

Back from commercial we see Dynamite Kid talking to Davey Boy. Dynamite expresses concern over the way that they beat the RNR Express. He didn't know that Gilbert and Page were going to interfere in the match and believes that they should handle business on there own. Davey Boy explains to Dynamite that it was just a pre-cautionary measure and they have nothing to worry about. Dynamite nods as the camera cuts away from the British Bulldogs backstage.

The Von Erichs defeated Los Guerreros after Kevin Von Erich locked in the Iron Claw on Chavo Guerrero at 9:42

Solid face vs. face tag match with both teams getting a fair amount of offense. The fans were clearly more behind the Von Erichs at first but Eddie and Chavo quickly won them over with a series of fast lucha-libre inspired moves. The Von Erichs though used there speed against them as Kevin was able to lock in an Iron Claw on Chavo while he went up top. It eventually became to much for Chavo as Kevin grounded him and walked away with the submission victory!

Backstage Scott Hall bumps into the "Magnificent" Muraco... Muraco apologizes for bumping into Hall but Hall has none of it. Hall explains that he has been down in Puerta Rico since leaving the AWA a year ago and has become a better wrestler in that time and has learned a whole new set of tricks... Chico!

Michael Hayes makes his entrance for his upcoming match against Mike Enos. Hayes explains he saved Shane Douglas from Harley Race as Douglas reminds him of a young Michael PS Hayes. He tells the audience that Douglas has been sent home for the rest of the week and will miss this weeks AWA Live Events thanks to Harleys attack. Hayes then tells Harley anytime and anywhere he wants to lock horns with Hayes then he will glady do it and show him what Badstreet USA is all about!

Michael Hayes defeated Mike Enos in 4:52 following a Back Suplex

Solid match between Hayes and Enos. Hayes look determined and kept his antics to a minimum. Enos hit some impressive offense but it wasnt enough. Enos went for a clothesline but Hayes ducked and went behind just in time to hit a nasty back suplex on the Tag Team specialist to end the match just shy of the 5 minute mark!

Post-match Harley Race appears on the stage and says as a Multiple Time heavyweight champion he didn't have to answer to anyone in the AWA. He admits Shane Douglas put in a good effort against him but it wasn't quite good enough. He goes on to explain he attacked Shane the way he did so that Shane would become more of a man. He explains it was part of paying dues and that Shane Douglas one day will be a great champion but first Harley needs to make him a man first. Race tells Hayes he was just trying to help the boy but Hayes just had to meddle in his business. Race says next week on AWA Championship Wrestling he will make Hayes pay some unpaid dues as they will collide in singles competition!!

Scott Hall defeated Magnificent Muraco at 10:02 with a Cross Powerbomb

Hall came out with a slightly altered look from his last AWA appearance. The handlebar mustace was gone and now replaced by a five o clock shadow and greased up hair. Hall and Muraco had a good match up that featured some neat moves and hard hitting action. Hall would end up getting a surprise victory with a move that stunned the Colorado crowd. Hall picked up Muraco like a powerbomb but then hoisted him up even farther in a Crucifix and drove Muraco hard to the mat with it to get the upset victory over the veteran!

After the match Hall grabbed the microphone "Chico... I warned you that I had learned some new moves in Puerta Rico... mang. This is your one warning... come at me again and I will show you what its like to live life on the Outsiders Edge"...

Scott Steiner defeated Wayne Bloom in 1:38 following a Frankensteiner

Scott Steiner made quick work of Wayne Bloom after dominating him on the mat, hitting a few quick suplexes and nailing a Frankensteiner! Not a good night for the Destruction Crew!!

Jerry Lawler defeated Brad Rheingans in 10:29 after a Top Rope Fist Drop

Lawler and Rheingans had a solid/back and forth match. Rheingans and Lawler both original AWA Employees put on quite the wrestling showcase between each other than ended after Lawler got the advantage and hit a fist drop off the top rope!

After the match Jerry Lawler helps Rheingans up and shakes his hand!

Terry Gordy defeated Action Jackson with an Oriental Spike in :40

Gordy made quick work of Action Jackson after nailing him with an Oriental Spike!

Ricky Steamboat defeated Eddie Gilbert in 16:32 by pinfall

By far the match of the night as far as AWA Championship Wrestling and AWA All Star Wrestling goes. Gilbert stepped up beyond the call of duty in a match many figured would be used to get Steamboat over. No clear cut dominant man in a match that was mainly just used to be a good old fashioned technical TV Main Event. Towards the end of the match DDP ran to ringside to help out his fellow Hotstuff Incorporated member Eddie Gilbert. Page drug the referee out of the ring and punched him. However Page and Gilbert wouldn't be able to get the upperhand on Steamboat as he fought both men off... however from the crowd would emerge Terry Funk!!! Funk entered the ring and quickly laid out Steamboat with a double axe handle to the back!!! Gilbert and Page look confused as Funk told them to bring him up... He told Page to hold Steamboat and told Gilbert to watch this!!! Funk went to hit Steamboat but at the last second stopped, turned around, kicked Gilbert and laid him out with a DDT! Before Page could react Steamboat had taken him out with a HUGE Bodyslam! From there Funk cleared Page from the ring as Steamboat climbed up top and hit a Body Splash on Gilbert to get the win!!!

Post-match Funk joined Steamboat in the ring. Funk grabbed a microphone and explains he has been in the crowd all night watching... from match one all the way to the awesome main event he just witnessed. However he saw the All Star Wrestling Main Event and watched Donald Trump ruin a classic tag team match up between the British Bulldogs and the Rock N Roll Express... all so he could "Set an example"... Funk goes on to explain that if he wants to set an "example" then he might want to do it with two guys who don't have the craziest son of a gun in wrestling today as a friend. Funk then tells the fans that he isn't worried about Trump "firing" him because he has a guaranteed contract because the new AWA had to have him. Funk explains that he doesn't play by the rules and neither does his friend Ricky Steamboat. Funk then looks down at Gilbert and Page who have been listening to his interview writhing in pain. Funk tells Gilbert don't worry about bringing Page next week as he can't hang but if Gilbert feels like he is ready to step up to the plate then he should bring a partner to face off against him and Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat in a match!!! AWA Championship Wrestling comes to an end as Gilbert is shown nodding and saying he will bring a partner next week for Steamboat and Funk!!!

The Booker's Notebook/Inside the Wrestling World

Week 1 December 1988

The AWA All Star Wrestling/Championship Wrestling tapings has the Wrestling community in a buzz/uproar all at once. Many people are questioning the method of having All Star Wrestling lead into Championship Wrestling. All Star Wrestling is available only on syndicated programming so a select few were able to see Douglas vs. Race and The Bulldogs vs. The Rock N Roll Express. AWA Vice President Eric Bischoff feels that its a good lead in for those who have not switched all the way to full cable yet but is still a good enough show to standalone in markets that ESPN has yet to reach.

Many wrestling insiders have expressed disdain in the way that AWA Television has been presented. The AWA which has always been known for a slower and more traditional pace of wrestling was turned upside down this week with a faster paced and harder hitting show. Couple that with more dramatic television style storylines and the bigger utilization of Main Event matches and you have a very different television show than what most are offering. Many in the wrestling business feel that the Donald Trump as an evil boss storyline will never work and it will fall flat on its face before it can ever begin to think about taking off.

The AWA Match of the week last week was Ricky Steamboat defeating Eddie Gilbert in the Main Event of Championship Wrestling. This tied with WWF Superstars Main Event of Rick Rude defeating Jim Duggan as far as match quality goes (B) and was just ahead of World Championship Wrestlings Match of the week of Dusty Rhodes, Junkyard Dog and Sting defeating Larry Zybysko, Kevin Sullivan and Butch Reed in the main event of the World Championship Wrestling Television program.

Company officials are said to be very high on both Shane Douglas and Hotstuff Eddie Gilbert after both men pulled off significantly high match grades with Harley Race and Ricky Steamboat. Douglas will be getting a big push against Race in a feud that looks to be stretched out for quite some time while Gilbert will be utilized heavily on television as the leader of Hot Stuff Incorporated.

nice job, I am gonna try my hand at an AWA diary/dynastie.hope you don't mind. anyways keep up the good work.

Don't mind one bit man! I'll keep an eye out for it. I really wanted to try and give a new universe feel to this dynasty. I am by no means a modder but I think this is a completely different take on the AWA!

AWA's All Star Wrestling continues this week as we invade Peoira, IL. Come see Jerry "The King" Lawler take on the "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant in our Main Event of the evening. Lawler has had a change of heart since the AWA has come back from its one month vacation. Will he be able to defeat longtime wrestling veteran Valiant? Where is Lawlers career heading with this sudden change of heart?

Tom Zenk suffered a fighting lost to the "Ugandan Giant" Kamala last week. This week however he is ready to get back on track as he gets ready to take on none other than Tommy Rich! Will Zenk be able to get back on the right track or will Tommy Rich pull off a fast one on the young star?

Also the Von Erichs ride again as they team up to face Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom the Destruction Crew! Last weeks AWA Championship Wrestling served singles match losses to both Wayne and Enos! Will they be able to recover and hand the boys from Denton County, TX there first loss or will they succumb to the experience and power of the Von Erichs?!

Also a word from Hot Stuff Incorporated's Eddie Gilbert as he prepares for tag team action with a mystery partner against Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and Roddy Piper later in the evening on ESPN's AWA Championship Wrestling!

Match Listing:

Jerry Lawler vs. Jimmy Valiant

Tom Zenk vs. Tommy Rich

The Von Erichs vs. The Destruction Crew

Cool stuff. I have an AWA game from the same time period, but gave up on it awhile ago. Hopefully you have better success. One question- Hall's clearly developing the Razor Ramon character-are you gonna give him the name 'Razor Ramon', or just the gimmick? I noticed you put Outsider's Edge and I was just curious if you meant Razor's Edge?

All Star Wrestling

December Week 2 1988

Bradley Events Center in Peoria, IL

The show begins with Eddie Gilbert making his way to the ring. Gilbert announces that tonight he has an upcoming tag team match-up facing off against Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and the man who dared interfere with Hotstuff Incorporated's business... Terry Funk. Gilbert tells the fans he isn't one to keep things a mystery and that he wants everyone to be able to prepare for the debut of the hottest tag team the AWA has ever seen... Roddy Pipers music hits and he comes down to the ring. Piper explains tonight the Hotrod teams up with Hotstuff!

The Von Erichs defeated the Destruction Crew at 5:45 following a Top Rope Cross-Body by Kevin to Mike Enos

Solid but underwhelming tag team showcase match between the Von Erichs and the Destruction Crew. The Crew has proven to me to be a solid but unspectacular team that can put on a good showcase match for anyone so far. Von Erichs took home the win pretty early in a nice warm the crowd up contest.

After the match longtime AWA Manager Johnny V comes out and announces he has secured the contracts of two of the biggest monsters in the AWA... Nikita Koloff and KAMALA. Both men come out and stand beside Johnny V. V announces later tonight on Championship Wrestling the unstoppable force of Nikita Koloff will team with the Immovable object of KAMALA in tag team action on there way to destroying the legacy of the Von Erichs... cut to commercial.

Wendi Richter defeated Judy Martin in 3:58 with a Sitout Powerbomb

Decent womens action taking place on All Star Wrestling. Mainly just filler but it served its purpose. A lot of the girls will be looking at getting repackaged/released sooner rather than later.

A pre-taped interview is shown from the home of Shane Douglas. Douglas explains last week he had the match of his career against former World Champion Harley Race. He doesn't understand why Race had to attack him more after the match was done and has always thought Race was a class act. Douglas explains he will be cheering on Michael Hayes this week from his home but next week he will be back in the AWA for in-ring action and to confront Harley on why he would do such a thing to him.

Tom Zenk defeated Tommy Rich at 10:09 after a top rope Missile Dropkick

Worst match in AWA History so far. Two men just did not click. Zenk got the win about 6 minutes to late to save this one.

Backstage Davey Boy Smith is shown talking to Diamond Dallas Page and Missy Hyatt. Noone is incredibly sure what is being said but they all shake hands at the end of it.

Scott Steiner defeated Mr. Shima in 3:26 after a Sitout Double Underhook Powerbomb

Another good outing by Scott Steiner. Shima proved to be a little bit more of a fight than his last opponent but Steiner was able to dominate for a good portion of the match and eventually hit another incredible move to finish the match off.

A promo is shown of Scott Hall on a beach in Puerto Rico. Hall explains his new attitude is due to him being an Outsider to the United States. When he left the AWA nobody would hire him or give him work until he went to Puerto Rico. They embraced him as one of there own and taught him everything about there culture. Muraco however has left every company he has ever worked for and never been denounced. Hall says he beat Muraco fair and square and anytime the big mayne wants to lock up again he will do it... just to show him what its like to live life on the Outsider's Edge!

Jerry Lawler defeated Jimmy Valiant in 14:56 after a Top Rope Fist Drop

Solid bout between the two men that featured some good action. Lawler has really been on a roll of dragging good matches out of unexpected workers. Lawler ends up getting the upperhand and the win in a good main event for All Star Wrestling.

After the match Donald Trump and Missy Hyatt come to the ring. Trump explains he has been impressed with Jerry Lawler as of late and wants to offer him a job as a member of Hotstuff Incorporated. As long as Lawler plays by his rules he will always have a job and will never have to worry about not being a star in the AWA. Trump has a contract drawn up and everything... Lawler looks it over and tells Trump he is going to have to look it over before he can agree to anything one way or another as All Star Wrestling comes to a dramatic end!

AWA Championship Wrestling on ESPN returns with an action packed and hard hitting episode! After last weeks dramatic conclusion with Terry Funk helping Ricky Steamboat fight off Hotstuff Incorporated in the Main Event, AWA President Donald Trump made a match between Funk and Steamboat against Eddie Gilbert and a mystery partner. Gilbert didn't let peoples imaginations wonder to long as he announced his partner would be none other than "Rowdy" Roddy Piper!

Michael Hayes and Harley Race collide in singles competition after the actions of Race attacking Shane Douglas in a match on All Star Wrestling last week. Will Hayes be able to get revenge for Shane or will Race be able to continue on the same path and get a win?

AWA Manager Johnny V has purchased the contracts of KAMALA and Nikita Koloff. With these contracts in possesion he has made them into a Tag Team that he has described as The Unstoppable Force teaming with the Immovable Object. Will these two monsters be able to co-exist in the ring as they take on Los Guerreros in a Tag Team Match?!

Match Listing:

Roddy Piper and Eddie Gilbert vs. Ricky Steamboat and Terry Funk

Harley Race vs. Michael Hayes

Nikita Koloff and KAMALA vs. Los Guerreros

Championship Wrestling

December Week 2 1988

Bradley Events Center in Peoria, IL

AWA Championship Wresling opens up with Ricky Steamboat and Terry Funk talking backstage. Ricky thanks Funk for having his back last week and he promises this week that they will take down Gilbert and Piper and attempt to restore some order here in the AWA. Funk agrees and says tonight they will prove why they are the best and baddest wrestlers in the AWA!

Nikita Koloff and KAMALA defeated Los Guerreros in 9:51 after Nikita made Chavo tap out to a Bearhug

Solid match between the newly formed team of KAMALA and Koloff and Los Guerreros. Chavo and Eddie put in a valiant effort against the two monsters of men but it was discovered fastly that speed couldn't beat power. Although KAMALA and Koloff manhandled the young Guerrero boys, they were able to put up a good fight and even kicked out of some of the teams bigger moves.

Post-match Nikita and KAMALA turn there attention to Eddie as Chavo is on the ground writhing in pain. Before to much can be done Kerry and Kevin Von Erich run to ringside and start brawling with Nikita and KAMALA. The security team and AWA Officials empty out from the back to break up the fight as AWA Championship Wrestling cuts to a commercial break.

After the break AWA Announcer Eric Bischoff is ringside with the Rock N Roll Express. Morton and Gibson talk about the fact that they are a little pissed off about last weeks actions from the British Bulldogs who they always thought were two stand up guys. Morton and Gibson tell them they can put on whatever T-Shirts declaring whatever kind of alliance they want but at the end of the day they are the better tag team and next time they meet in the ring they will come prepared!

Diamond Dallas Page defeated Action Jackson in 3:50 via Diamond Cutter

Hyatt came out with DDP and sat in on commentary. Hyatt explains DDP has transitioned into a wrestling role thanks to the training of Hotstuff Incorporated. Fun match that ends with DDP nailing a brutal Bulldog type manuever he calls the "Diamond Cutter"

Backstage Donald Trump is shown walking into Jerry Lawler's locker room. Trump explains that Lawler can either play by his rules or he can suffer the consequences. Trump hands Lawler a Hotstuff Incorporated T Shirt and tells him one day he will have to make the decision to either "Do the right thing" or else.

The Destruction Crew defeated Tom Zenk and Brad Rheingans after Enos hit Rheingans with a Powerbomb in 5:54

Tag Team Showcase match. Zenk and Rheingans were not a good team. Second time in one night that Zenk has gotten a bad chemistry note with someone. He may be looking at a release fairly quick as his attitude isn't well either.

Michael Hayes cuts a promo backstage saying after the break he will be ready to take on Harley Race and will avenge his actions against Shane Douglas last week!

Michael Hayes defeated Harley Race with a DDT in 10:54

Hayes and Race put on a good wrestling brawl. Both men were laying the strikes into each other throughout the match and it was clear both were out for blood. After about 11 minutes of brawling though Race was clearly at a disadvantage as Hayes laid him out with a DDT to get the win.

Post-match Race recovers from the DDT and quickly attacks Hayes during his celebration. Race gets up and lays out Hayes with a Piledriver and then puts boots to him. After this Race picks him up and hits him with TWO MORE Piledrivers. Race leaves ringside with the damage being done to Michael Hayes...

Magnificent Muraco defeated Jimmy Valiant at 8:16 with a Tombstone Piledriver

Good match between two of the AWA's more underrated hands. Nothing big to write home about but a solid contest. Muraco picks up the win recovering from last week's shocking defeat.

Post-match Muraco grabs the microphone and tells Hall anytime and anywhere he wants to face him he will take the match!

A quick camera shot is shown of Michael Hayes being drove away in an ambulance!

Scott Steiner defeated the Trooper in 4:10 with a Double Underhook Powerbomb

Steiner continues to steamroll through the roster after defeating The Trooper in a quick bout!

Roddy Piper and Eddie Gilbert defeated Ricky Steamboat and Terry Funk after Piper used the ropes to his advantage against Steamboat at 16:21

Fantastic television Main Event between the 4 men who are slowly becoming synonomous with the name AWA. Gilbert has really stepped up to the roll of being Trump's lacker/Main Event Heel, Piper delivered good charisma/sharp in ring work, Funk was throwing punches left and right and Steamboat was... well Ricky Steamboat! Piper and Gilbert isolated Steamboat through out most of the match and did everything possible to try and put away but a comeback would end up working for Ricky as he tagged in Funk who cleaned house to a huge ovation. Eventually choas would start to run amuck which Piper used to his advantage and secured the win for him and Gilbert...

Post-match Piper beats down Steamboat as Gilbert and Hyatt attack Funk. Hyatt grabs her bag and brings out a handcuff as DDP and The Bulldogs rush to ringside. They help Piper and Gilbert beat down Steamboat and Funk as Hyatt handcuffs Funk to the ropes. Gilbert tells the rest of Hotstuff Incorporated to stand back as he LAUNCHES A FIREBALL at Terry Funk. The show comes to an end with AWA Officials scrambling to ringside and covering up Funk's face with a wet towel!

Douglas however fell short after a Piledriver from Harley Race. After the match Douglas was attacked by Harley Race until Michael Hayes stepped in to stop it. Douglas would take the following week off but Hayes stepped up to the plate vs. Race. This ended up being a bad idea for Hayes as he is now out of action for an undisclosed time thanks to two piledrivers from Harley Race. Douglas had told us he will be dedicating his match tonight to his friend Michael Hayes and promises he is far from done with Harley Race...   </div></div><div></div></div></div><div style="padding: 5px; border: 1px solid transparent; clear: both; position: relative;"><div style="padding: 5px; display: block;"><div style="position: relative; z-index: 2;" align="center"><img style="width: 150px; height: 150px; margin-right: 25px;" alt="Participant 1" src="http://i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s412/midsouth/ShaneDouglas4.jpg" width="150" height="150"><img style="width: 150px; height: 150px; margin-left: 25px;" alt="Participant 2" src="http://i1050.photobucket.com/albums/s412/midsouth/jimmyvaliant3.jpg" width="150" height="150"><img style="top: -20px; right: 259px; position: absolute;" title="Versus" alt="Versus" src="http://fictionplus.interwebz.co.nz/images/content/public/versus/lgvs_alt10.png"><div style="left: 445px; top: 55px; position: absolute;"><img title="grade" alt="grade" src="http://fictionplus.interwebz.co.nz/images/content/public/grades/tough/d-.png" width="211" height="117"></div><div style="height: auto; margin-top: 5px;"><div style='font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 24px; display: block;'><div style="text-align: left;"><strong>                    Shane Douglas </strong>vs. <strong>Jimmy Valiant<br><br></strong>Douglas came into this match with a lot more serious tone than his debut vs. Race.
