Kafu Bunya faces Tsubasa Sakuro at DRAGON 101

Osaka -- The full card has been finalized for the DRAGON Fighting Championships next event, DRAGON.101 which takes place on Saturday May 19th, 2012 from the Matsue Sports Park in Hiroshima. Headlining the show will be a Welterweight battle between Kafu Bunya (25-10) and 2008 Judo Olympain Tsubasa Sakuro (6-2). Kafu Bunya is a two-time ALPHA-1 Welterweight champion winning the title in 1999 and then again in 2003. In 2009, Bunya made the move to OLYMPUS FS where he’s fought to a record of 3-2. Despite being over 40, Bunya is still a dangerous striker who is well known for his defensive skills. The Lion of Oita, Tsubasa Sakuro was a high level judo player who didn’t enter the sport of MMA until the age of 32. After losing his debut in DRAGON back in May 2011, he returned with back-to-back to wins with the most recent coming over Tarcisio Dantas at Way of the Dragon this past February.

In the co-main event, Featherweight Shoin Chiba (19-6) meets Snorri Gunnarsson (30-8-1). Shoin Chiba is a submission artist who fights out of the Snake Temple camp and is ranked in the top 10. He’s one of the longest reigning DRAGON Featherweight champions in history holding the title between September 2006 to July 2008 and making four successful title defenses over that period. Chiba has lost only once in his past five outings. Iceland native Snorri Gunnarsson is a longtime Featherweight veteran and one the best to come out of Europe. He’s a former SIGMA champion who’s on a five fight winning streak. Gunnarsson is a master strategist who like’s to punish from the clinch and has an effective ground and pound.

Also on the card, IMPACT MMA’s Karl Foster (10-1) will be looking for his fifth straight win when he takes on one of Drunken Monkey Dojo top fighters Jonathan Chen (10-1). Lightweight Nariakira Yoshikawa (11-6) will face Eikichi Shichirobei (8-5) and newcomers Scott Lewis (3-0) and Lorens Olsen (4-1) will meet. 2004 Chinese Olympic Freestyle Wrestler and former FLB Middleweight champ Li Bingci (5-4) takes on Brazilian kickboxer Lucimar do Bonfiml (8-10) and Shumei Shinozaki (6-11) will take on Ennosuke Nozaki (2-2) in the opener.

Wow, I am really impressed. Visually pleasing and very easy to read, you don't get lost and you know what is going on. Really interested to see where you take this INSPIRE re-brand, especially if it ties in with DRAGON. Am I right to assume that this is a game you played from all the way back in 1998 and up to now and just decided to do a diary out of it? Because that is some true dedication, man.

Also, rooting for Kafu Bunya, he is my main man.

Thanks for the kind words, appreciate the feedback. I didn't start running DRAGON until the mid 2000s, and decided to make a diary starting from 2012. My goal is get things up to date and run the promotion in real time.

The INSPIRE re-brand will hopefully be interesting, although I don't think there will be any direct tie-in with DRAGON (but President Higashikuni does own a large part of INSPIRE's parent company). INSPIRE MMA is going to run as it own brand and will focus on a single Openweight division. We should get some more details on this new promotion soon (and I will likely setup a thread just for INSPIRE).

The amount of time it must take to do all of this is insane. Aesthetically it's probably the best presented diary I've ever seen. I especially like the pre-event posters. They remind me of the old K-1 style, where they didn't look particularly glossy, but I'd love to have a blown up one on my wall.

With regards to content, you've got this weird dichotomy going on where it's a very niche market in terms of if it was a real life product, yet I think it's of interest to anyone who's played WMMA 3 for any considerable time.

My only criticism would come from your additional information at the beginning. Obviously you've got nearly 15 years of game time to catch up on and I'd like to have known the state of play around the world and what happened to some of the major players. That said, you're clearly putting a ton of effort in and if that's going to burn you out, I wouldn't bother with a backstory.

And I'll save someone else asking it. What happened to Hassan Fezzik?

Former Olympic Judoka Tsubasa Sakuro Defeats Kafu Bunya at DRAGON 101

Hiroshima -- In what some are calling a big upset, 2008 Olympic Judo player Tsubasa Sakuro (7-2) won his third straight fight defeating popular Welterweight Kafu Bunya (25-10) in the main event at DRAGON.101. Kafu Bunya looked as though he was going to win the fight when he locked in an armbar midway through the final round. But Tsubasa Sakuro fought valiantly and somehow was able to pop his arm free escaping the hold. With the time limit expiring, the fight went to the judges and in a close decision two of the three judges awarded the match to Sakuro. In a post-fight interview, Tsubasa Sakuro said that he’d been told he’ll be in line for an upcoming Welterweight title fight. Kafu Bunya told the press after his fight that he was disappointed with the judges decision but plans to return to DRAGON to make one final run at the title.

In the co-main event, Featherweight Shoin Chiba (20-6) beat Iceland’s Snorri Gunnarsson (30-9-1) by Guillotine at the 2:52 mark of the second round. In the round one, Gunnarsson dominated Chiba keeping him pinned against the ropes and scoring with stinging strikes. In the second round, Gunnarsson stopped a takedown attempt wrestling Chiba to the floor. From the half guard, Gunnarsson tried to stand up but Chiba applied the guillotine from the bottom of the half guard. With the choke fully applied Gunnarsson was forced to tap out. With the victory, Shoin Chiba moves to the top of DRAGON’s Featherweight division as Snorri Gunnarsson suffers his first loss in six outings.

In other action, Malaysian kickboxer Jonathan Chen (11-1) squeezed out a split decision over American Karl Foster (10-2) in a close fight. Shikoku JAPAN—DRAGON Fighting Championships returned on June 23rd, 2012 with over 10,000 fans in attendance at the Takamatsu Prefectural Gymnasium in Shikoku Japan to see Malaysian Chan Kim Huat (23-6) make his first successful defense of the Lightweight championship against Fujimaro Hidaka (18-11). After a first round controlled by Huat, they entered the second when Hidaka countered a left jab and scored a vicious head kick that landed on the temple of Huat crumpling to the ground in a daze! Hidaka moved in for a armbar, but Huat stacked up and worked to gain side control. Huat then attempted a kimura, which was defended by Hidaka. Huat quickly turned to lock in an armbar which forced Hidaka to tap at 2:53. It's the third win a row for the freestyle submissionist who continues to establish himself as one of the best Lightweight fighters in the world today.

In the co-main event, Shigekazu Shiroyama (7-1) won his sixth straight match dropping Russian Oral Jankowski (14-2) with a knockout kick early in the third round. After splitting the first two round, Shiroyama landed a perfectly placed high kick knocking Jankowski out cold. Shigekazu Shiroyama may be win or two away from earning a title shot, but he's on the right trajectory. With the loss Jankowski, breaks his seven fight winning streak.

In other action, former DRAGON Lightweight champ Ahmed Mohamed Faraq (18-5) rebounded nicely after recently losing the title to spoil the debut of former WVTC Bantamweight champ Natsuhiko Mishima (12-3). Former RATP Lightweight champ Gordon Patterson (11-2) made some noise in his DRAGON debut beating 2008 Rise of the Year winner and current BCF Lightweight champion Atsumori Sugawara (10-4). Welterweight Duncan Thistlewood (19-11) defeated Kuma Ichigawa (10-9) with a late first round armbar in the Fight of the Night and undefeated German Featherweight Guthrie Schmidt (7-0) handed Swiss Jiu-Jitsu national champion Franz Zinsli (5-1) his first pro loss. In the opening bouts, wrestler Kanezane Toshusai (5-1) beat striker Ryutaro Miura (5-2) by unanimous decision and South Korean Yong Hang (6-0) won his sixth straight bout defeating former Japanese Taekwondo champ Toru Yamane (1-0).

Up next is DRAGON.102, which will take place on Saturday July 20th, 2012 from the Osaka Athletic Gymnasium. Headlining the event will be Welterweight champ Chad Zoff (20-9) defending the title against Kazuya Endo (11-3). There was also an announcement that in August, the promotion is planning another TV special, Way of the Dragon II. Details would be made available at a later date.
