CGC: The Best-Acted Wrestling Program on Television

After a show that saw something familiar the fans always love (the DeColts beating ELITE) and something new that's going to pay off for months to come (Gargantuan attacking Ricky), I don't have much to say about the former, and don't want to reveal anything about the latter. So I thought I'd talk about the other two heel teams.

First of all, as rumored, we're letting go of Chance. With Ray Kingman and Eric Tyler now in the fold as road agents, we just don't need him. Sure, Kingman is getting up there in age, but by the time he retires, I'd imagine Ed Monton will be willing to slip into the role. Hey, Monton's already planning out a few of the undercard matches. (He'll also be working closely with Tyler on another project we have planned, provided nothing goes funny.)

To his credit, Chance came to us -- he realized that he was no. 4 on the totem pole behind the scenes, and we had never had any interest in putting him back on screen. He did have one condition before agreeing to his release, though: he wanted to wrestle one more match. We could have said no, but why antagonize a legend? Why antagonize Fate, and Destiny, and half the old-school locker room? To avoid an opening match that wasn't great technically, but the fans were into it? Not a good enough reason.

Ultimately, this is the kind of match you live with, because it's pretty bad in the moment, but a lot of long-time Soldiers of Fortune fans are going to remember it fondly. Chance and Fate's last hurrah, presumably. It also let us test out the new Soldiers as potential tag title challengers... which we have to say doesn't look likely at this point.

Meanwhile, it was a little controversial in the locker room to essentially re-do the final Specialists/Youth Energy match two months later. But here's the thing: the last Specialists/Youth Energy match came right after I got here, and if I had been in control, it never would have been booked that way. It was a non-ending... it nullified the top two tag teams in the country, but it didn't create any story fodder. It just kind of fizzled out.

So we had to do it again, this time with a storyline. By making it a 3v3, we avoid the "last" billing from two months ago being a lie. But now we have bad blood between Johnson and Thomas, which is a springboard for another long storyline. So now Johnson and Thomas both have something to lead into. Nelson has the Jenny storyline. That leaves only Lee Rivera without a direction, and a guy with Lee's talent makes his own direction... even if that direction is "be a top guy in the midcard for a while, and have some good matches." Sometimes that's enough, right?

CGC Title Bout Wrestling for Week 2

??? vs. Trent Shaffer

Presumably, Ricky DeColt will not be available for this one as scheduled, so somebody's going to have to fill in. Shaffer lost to Joey Poison at Elimination, and is looking for redemption.

Whippy the Clown vs. Ryan Powell

After missing out on a Canadian title shot, Powell gets another match against one of the better guys in CGC. How has Whippy never taken the Canadian title, by the way? He's been around for a long time.

Ed Monton vs. Fred Zeppelin vs. Nathan Black

A technical battle between the Grand Old Man of CGC, the perpetually underestimated Black Dog, and newcomer Zeppelin, a gifted mat worker formerly known as "Cal Sanders" on the independent scene.

Warren Technique vs. Brett Fraser

Technique would have fit right in in the three-way match, but instead he faces quite a different sort of foe. Fraser's unhinged brawling -- and his moose and beer-based antics -- have quickly made him a fan favorite.

I would normally keep Chance, even if you don't use him, if you intend to do anything with the Soldiers of Fortune as Chance and Fate have loyalty to each other. Keeping them together would probably provide a small morale boost. Plus, even though he is retired, he has decent performance skills and could be used to help train wrestlers in dark matches.

That's reasonable, but we're securely into 100% morale territory, so I'm not as worried. As for dark matches, we have many workers with equal or better performance skills -- Monton, the Specialists and Youth Energy, Grayson, both Samoans, Vin Tanner. (Trust me, if you don't see him on the main show, Ed Monton is always fighting someone in a dark match.) And a lot of those guys can produce something that won't kill the crowd. So a workaround doesn't really seem worth it.
