The GWAL: a new D1 conference where everything starts even

Recommended Posts

The GWAL has been granted membership to Division I NCAA basketball.

The GWAL will be prestige 3. I decided to try something different, I got an average rating of all the schools that were in prestige 3 conferences, and I have made all GWAL schools start with a team prestige of 42. All head coaches in the GWAL will begin with a coach prestige of 5.

Now obviously that may create havoc for the first season, as conference play could be pretty even. But I expect teams to have a rise or fall in prestige based on w-l record, schedule strength, recruiting results, and assistant coaches. I guarantee not all the GWAL schools will be prestige 42 schools after season 1.

I am taking over Wichita West. For those that need a recap of the GWAL schools, we have:

Bishop Carroll

Wichita East

Wichita Heights

Kapaun Mt. Carmel

Wichita North

Wichita Northwest

Wichita South

Wichita Southeast

Wichita West

Just a quick recap as I actually start this report on the FOFC forums last week. Wichita West is 3-1, with their only loss coming to Mississippi State in the first round of the Las Vegas Classic.

Since then, they beat Colorado and Troy to finish 5th in the tournament, and we beat Chicago State in a non-conference game. I will post the roster and season schedule soon.

Dec. 3-9, 2012

Dec. 3, 2012

Seattle (0-1) @ Wichita West (3-1)

We jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back, as we held Seattle to less than 20% shooting in the first half. They ended up shooting 37.5% for the game, and we outrebounded them 34-20. Colby Stromberg led the way with 14 points and 5 assists. All 13 available players played and got at least 3 minutes of action as we won 58-40. The only bad news is that we will be without starting PF Joseph Moore for 14 days, as he has Patellar Tendanitis. Yikes!

Dec. 8, 2012

Elon (1-3) @ Wichita West (4-1)

Daniel Burns is in the starting lineup tonight for the injured Joseph Moore. This should be another game that we win easily, but I wanted Elon on the schedule because my ex-gf played softball there. This gave her a chance to come and see me. :) But more on that later, now its gametime. Unfortunately this game was much, much closer than it should have been. We had 12 first half turnovers and went into the locker room tied at 26. Never really got in a rhythm offensively, but back to back three pointers by Colby Stromberg gave us an 8 point lead late, and we ended up holding on 60-51. William Mahler was actually our player of the game, he had 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Stromberg led us in scoring with 19.

After the game me and Sadie (the ex) went out to dinner, talked about the game. She wished me luck on the season, I asked her how she was doing, one thing led to another... and well lets just say we are no longer ex's. Bow chica wow wow.

This is the week by week format that I will run this dynasty in. In the past I have done a game by game format with box scores, but I like the short game reports better. If anybody has anything to add to this dynasty, you are more than welcome to. I'm always looking for a little interaction.

Dec. 10-16, 2012

Dec. 13, 2012

Murray State (1-5) @ Wichita West (5-1)

Murray States record is very deceiving, as they have played a very tough schedule so far. This is going to be a tough game. And it started as such as the Racers raced out to a 17-5 lead. Then, inexplicably, we scored 19 in a row to take a 24-17 lead and never looked back. We led 28-21 at halftime and built that lead to as many as 24 in the second half. Denis Welter led us in scoring with 24 and Colby Stromberg added 19, as we rolled 73-54.

Dec. 15, 2012

Wichita West (6-1) @ Oral Roberts (4-3)

This is our first true road game after a neutral site tournament and 4 straight home games. Good news on our side as Joseph Moore has been cleared to play. He won't start, and I'll probably only play him about 10 or 15 minutes to see how he does. This was about as ugly as a game can get. Neither team led by more than a few points, each team had 16 turnovers, and we committed 11 second half fouls. Despite all that, we had the last shot with a chance to win. Colby Stromburg missed a three pointer from the left corner. Oral Roberts grabbed the rebound as the buzzer went off and we lost a heartbreaker, 49-48. Despite the loss, Stromburg was still voted player of the game as he ended with a game high 19 points.

Dec. 17-23, 2012

Dec. 18, 2012

Wichita West (6-2) @ Cleveland State (6-3)

I got to Cleveland a day before the team did, as Bone Thugs n Harmony were performing on the 17th, and that was a concert to see! Now I had to get my team ready for a big game. I inserted Joseph Moore back into the starting lineup as he is almost 100%. This was a tight game throughout, but we led the whole way. Momentum changed early in the second half when we were up 47-41. Cleveland State got 2 technicals in the span of a minute, and we went on a huge run. By the time the damage was done, we led 63-41. They went on an 18-5 run to end the game, but by then the damage was done. Denis Welter led us with 24 points, and we won 68-59.

Dec. 21, 2012

Mississippi Valley State (2-6) @ Wichita West (7-2)

Not expecting this game to be very close, but I also know that we can't have any letdowns. We have to keep putting the pedal to the metal and dominate this game. And as expected, not a lot to talk about in this one. We forced 19 turnovers, committed only 8, held them to just 29.3% shooting, shot 59% ourselves, and got everybody in the game for at least 4 minutes. Everything was so balanced for us that the POTG was Colby Stromberg, who finished with 9 points and 5 assists. And oh yea, the final score was 64-32, we won

Dec. 24-30, 2012

Dec. 24, 2012

Montana State (6-4) @ Wichita West (8-2)

I've decided to throw in a 3-2 zone for this game, and Carl Carl took full advantage of it. He had 14 rebounds and 7, yes I said 7, blocked shots. Unfortunately we only shot 31.4% from the field, but we were able to get to the line a lot, 18-23 from the line. That proved to be the difference as we won 54-46.

Dec. 27, 2012

Wichita West (9-2) @ Kansas State (8-2)

This is by far our toughest test since our season opener against Mississippi State. I decided to stick primarily with the 3-2 zone, but also mix in some man defense. To my surprise, we hung tight with them all the way. Carl Carl was a beast again, with 15 rebounds and 5 blocks, and Colby Stromberg led us with 19 points. Unfortunately we couldn't get a look at a game tying three pointer as the buzzer went off, and we fell 59-56. A gallant effort against a very good team though.

As we head into conference play, lets take a look at the standings. There are still 2 non-conference games mixed into the conference schedule, but lets see what the standings look like.

Wichita Heights 0 0 .000 1 9 .100 301 42

We are one of just 3 GWAL teams with a winning record. That record of 11-0for Northwest is very deceiving, as the combined record of the teams they've played in their 11 games is 31-90. Yowzers! Gotta give them credit for a good win against a 9-3 Tulsa team however.

Dec. 31, 2012-Jan. 6, 2013

Jan. 1, 2013

Bishop Carroll (5-0, 0-0) @ Wichita West (9-3, 0-0)

Finally, we open up conference play to see just how all these prestige 42 teams measure up against each other. We also have gotten Erich Koziol back from academic suspension, and we'll see how he does. As for the game, we were down 28-22 at halftime, but roared back in the second half. Carl Carl had a double double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and Colby Stromberg scored 20 points as we got a good conference win, 60-48.

There were no other conference games tonight, we were the only one. What I will do with other conference scores... I will post other conference scores on nights that we have a game. If there are conference games going on a night when we don't have a game, I won't post the scores. Hope that clears that up at least. lol

Jan. 5, 2013

Wichita West (10-3, 1-0) @ Wichita South (5-8, 0-0)

This will be the first conference game for the Titans, as we look to stay hot. This game was tied at halftime, but we took control in the second half. Our starting backcourt of Colby Stromberg and Denis Welter combined for 46 points. Welter had 25, Stromberg had 21. We won 71-57 to stay undefeated in GWAL play.

Other Conference Games:

at Wichita North 63, Wichita Heights 52

Bishop Carroll 55, at Wichita Northwest 41

Kapaun Mt. Carmel 62, at Wichita East 49

So Wichita Northwest suffers their first conference loss.. well actually their first loss of the season.

This game was a lot closer than I expected it to be, as the Blue Aces scrapped all game and actually had a lead late. We stepped out of conference play tonight for what should have been an easy non-conference game, and it was. We had 4 players score in double figures, led by Joseph Moore with 16 points and 11 boards. Colby Stromberg had 15 points and 6 assists, and we rolled to a 74-55 victory. The only bad spot is that we lost Denis Welter to a concussion. He'll be out about 2 weeks.

Just an update on this dynasty, I have not killed it, unfortunately I am going through a mass of computer troubles. I got a pleasant surprise when I arrived home tonight to find that my personal computer now logs into the internet again. However I was told by my computer technican/coworker that he still has a lot to do to it. So for now I am going to hold off on reporting. There is a chance we may have to kill the hard drive and start from scratch. Will keep you all updated.

We needed a big win tonight to get some confidence back, and North would prove to be a tough foe. 3 guys scored in double figures tonight. Carl Carl was the man with 21 points and 14 boards, Colby Stromberg had 13, and Tony Arce put in 20, taking advantage of his starts. We ended up winning 76-68.

I decided to keep Tony Arce in the starting lineup for this game, even though Denis Welter is healthy again. In fact I chose to hold Welter out of this game completely and bring him back for our next game. Colby Stromberg continued to put some points up, this time getting 24 as we won 65-55.

The Eagles are at the top of the GWAL right now, and we are tied with Northwest, 1 game behind. Denis Welter is back in the starting lineup for this game, and he scored 13 points. Colby Stromberg had 15 points, and Tony Arce had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Oh yeah, and we won 66-51.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am going to have to put an end to this dynasty. The simple reason why is that I started the GWAL at a prestige 3. In reality, the GWAL is one of the best high school leagues in my state, and I want to make them a prestige 5 and see how they compete with the power conference schools. Unfortunately I am going to have to manually edit the coaches and conferences to get them closer to real life. I won't edit all the coaches, just some. Unless I can find a coaches file somewhere to make it easier.

I probably won't be starting this project anytime soon as I have a couple of other projects I am working on that take up most of my time. I will probably look to start it in a couple weeks or so, once I get some coaches edited and stuff. The GWAL will be coming back as a prestige 5 league.
