Eddie Peak and Rick Law, two of the combatants for tonight’s main event, are in the ring together. Peak’s eyes are closed as he reclines into the corner, Law flickering intermittent glances towards him and probably incapable of looking more ill at ease if he tried.

Without opening his eyes, Peak raises a microphone.

“Such a bounty laid before Peak…” he purrs. “Such a feast he has been given.”

“Golden, Johnson. Prey… prey rarely comes so… tantalising.”

“Peak cannot wait.”

There’s a long pause. Law appears to be waiting for Peak to continue, uneasy about interrupting. When it becomes clear he’s done – for now, Law steps in.

“There aren’t much bigger fish in this pond than Rocky Golden and RDJ. Both of them are former world champions, and you don’t exactly just bump into those on the street. Not only that, both of them are challenging for the belt again in a couple weeks.”

Law’s jaw firms and he straightens up, adjusting his sunglasses.

“But if they or anyone else thinks that holding a pretty little ornament gives them the right to run roughshod over the Law, then I’ve got a fine-looking set of bracelets to introduce them to. I am sick and tired of the disrespect that is shown towards JUSTICE in this company by so-called champions and so-called ‘heroes’… well let me-“

Trumpets blare. Law stops dead, mouth hanging open for a second before he shuts it. Peak’s eyes finally open as a grin spreads across his face.

http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z453/EddStoneNOTBPW/TCW/RickyDaleJohnson.jpghttp://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z453/EddStoneNOTBPW/TCW/RockyGolden.jpg

Golden and RDJ emerge as a duo, united – at least for now.

RDJ wastes no time in getting going. “You still jawing, son? Law, I ain’t ever seen someone with his head screwed on quite as wrong as you, and when that’s by comparison to Cornell, Hawkins, and that fella next to you… well, y’all ain’t exactly smelling of roses here. Bold as brass, talking ‘bout what’s good and right, and the next second, running out on fights, cheating to get ahead… damn kid, you have a moment’s shame?”

Law’s face is like stone. Peak continues to grin, leaning forward out of the corner as Golden and RDJ move down the ramp and into the ring.

Golden takes the fore. “You want to throw down, you’ve got us tonight. Until tell then, how about you stop giving these good people a headache with your BS and you-“ Golden jabs at Peak. “…With whatever the heck it is you do. Seriously man, if you’re hungry I’m pretty sure catering could whip you up something, jeez…”

“Peak will not be denied his delightful feast.”

“Standing right here, Eddie-boy.”

Law steps forward, RDJ blocks him. His jaw works a moment. Peak slides closer to Golden without even seeming to take a step. The four men stare each other down for a long, tense moment.

The self-declared protector of justice scowls and backs away, Peak gives him a bored glance and then follows, tension slowly easing from the ring as everyone finally heads to the back.

Davis Wayne Newton vs. Sammy Bach

Little fan interest in the opener, given the gulf in name value between the pair. However, the action has a number of crowd members scrambling back to their seats from an early run to the concession stands as Bach and Newton seem to connect on quite a level. It’s breakneck pace and doesn’t stop for an instant, but although it’s short, it’s more than enjoyable, and there’s a big pop as Bach turns into a human blur and snags the rookie with an Adrenaline Shot.

Genghis Rahn vs. Jacob Jett w/Katie Cameron

A debut for Jacob Jett and we get a first look at another promising young cruiserweight. He gives Rahn some immediate trouble, as once again the veteran seems to struggle to maintain the pace of the match, looking increasingly disgruntled as things progress. He tags Jett with a couple of good hits, but for the most part this match seems pretty much designed to show off what the newcomer can do on his first emergence from the dark. For a little while, Rahn looks like he has Jett in trouble – barging him into the corner, repeatedly ramming into him with a shoulder. However, as he raises Jett up top and then follows up, Jett unleashes a headbutt, scrambles free, and nails a BEAUTIFUL sunset flip powerbomb – Jett Take Off! Rahn’s kept down for the three.

“…I’m saying is that have YOU ever seen a cat with wings? Nature doesn’t always think of evolutionary genius, man!”

“Edd that’s- I… never mind.”

“Imagine Laura – the majestic winged cat, soaring through the skies…”

“There is literally nothing less that I would rather be doing, Freddy.”

“Salutations!”

The Canadian Animals, hanging out in a corridor, look up to see Roger Cage with the ever-present Winston. Xavier Ali, lurking in the back, pushes to the fore and gives a smiling Cage a look.

“I could not help but overhear your conversation my good sirs, and some fine points you have indeed. But what, I must postulate, if said feline was mounted with mighty-machine-guns to augment its aerial endeavours?”

Edd’s jaw drops. Freddy is stunned.

“That’s…” Huggins wipes away a tear. “That’s beautiful.”

“I am a man of words and poetry.”

“Words ain’t gonna help you in our match,” Ali folds his arms, glowering.

Cage’s eyebrows both raise. “One must always make time for intellectual pursuits. You yourself appear to be a likely beneficiary of such.”

“You sayin’ I’m dumb?”

“I don’t believe I stated as much. Winston? What do you think?”

The masked man says nothing.

“A fine point.”

Ali starts forward but Laura has his shoulder, shaking her head. “He’s baiting you.”

“Am I?” there’s a twinkle in Cage’s eye. Laura shoots him a venomous look.

“I’d thank you to stop distracting my client. Edd. Freddy. Come on.”

The Animals trundle off, faint ‘HUGE WINGS!’ and ‘CUTESY PAWS!’ audible. Ali stays a moment longer and then turns to follow Laura, leaving Cage smiling and Winston, well, Winston.

“Hey…”

http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z453/EddStoneNOTBPW/TCW/FlyingJimmyFoxx.jpg

Flying Jimmy Foxx strolls up, eyeing the Animals as they leave. He nods his head to Cage, then Winston, shaking both of their hands.

“We haven’t met. I’m Jimmy Foxx.”

“Our esteemed champion, until recently.”

“Yeah well, looking to fix that.”

“Of course, no disrespect was meant.”

Foxx shrugs. “Anyway listen… I know those two seem like clowns, but trust me, they are a lot more dangerous than they look – and I’m willing to bet Ali’s cut from the same cloth.”

A contemplative expression comes onto Cage’s face. “Indeed, the warning is appreciated… but my dear fellow…”

Cage turns to look down the now-empty corridor.

“I’d formulated an idea of such already.”

The New Wave w/Agent vs. C-V-2

Newly crowned champions go toe to toe with the new kids on the block. A lot’s made by the announcers, in the early going, of the youngsters’ famous relatives. For better or for worse, Peter Valentine is a big part of TCW (or HGC at least) history, and one of the senior Vesseys is still plying his trade.

Doakes: You’d have to think… win here and these newcomers have got to be right in the frame for the titles.

Rhodes: I suppose their family names gave them a lift with the matchmakers.

Regardless, the less experienced team are definitely no slouches, and with quick tags and teamwork, they demonstrate that their skills mean as much as their reputation in getting an opportunity in TCW. The Wave for their part are cagey, in constant communication, calls relaying between them, through Agent, and then back again, seemingly gauging what C-V-2 can do… and then springing into motion in a frightening flurry. Vessey’s dropped by a combination from Guide, stumbles towards his corner and gets shoulder blocked into the buckle, Guide rebounds, and as Valentine moves in, eats a flying forearm. Reeling , a hard snap suplex puts him down, the tag by the Wave – Vessey smashed from the apron, and Valentine’s all on his own for the Wave of Mutilation.

Roger Cage w/Winston vs. Frantic Ali w/Laura Huggins

There’s some hesitation as the pair get to grips here. Call it nerves from having so few matches on the national stage on TV, maybe, or just something of a disconnect between the two worker’s styles. They warm up to things as time goes on, but it’s persistent throughout the match that Cage and Ali just don’t particularly have the right measure of each other.

In any case, it’s still a decent match from two competitors new to TCW. Both managers do some good work – Winston managing just from gestures and body language to convey a constant feel for how the match is going, nodding emphatically when Cage scores with a big move, pounding the ring apron to get his employer fired up. Huggins does her bit and Ali plays off it masterfully, improvising an eye poke, a stomp to the foot whenever she catches the eye of Ray Johnson. It’s all good stuff, and takes the mind from the slight awkwardness between the competitors. Perhaps fittingly, it concludes as Huggins is blocked from climbing onto the apron by Winston, Ali turns to protest, and Cage capitalises by jumping, seizing him by the head, and planting him with an inverted DDT- wham, Cage Rage! Ali’s done, and Cage covers with flair.

Brent Hill vs. Joshua Taylor

Hill’s somewhat past his best now – he’s certainly visibly slower than he was a couple of years ago, but given the right opponent, he can definitely still make things happen. Taylor is certainly that kind of opponent, and what ensues from the two men is a fine display of very technical wrestling.

Rhodes: As far as skill goes, they’re an even match, think of where Taylor could be in a couple years.

Azaria: Just right, Kyle, and here’s a little fact you may not know – many of Taylor’s suplex variation were learned from one of the Japanese masters, Yoshimi Mushashibo!

Tape traders and fans of puroresu may well catch this as Taylor lands something very much like a Mushashibo-Plex I, dazing Hill. Sensing blood in the water, Taylor goes for double underhooks.Hill, the veteran, gets an arm free- caught again – slips out- clamped back on- and the Butterfly Lock is cinched in! There’s a momentary struggle, and then Hill taps.

Koshiro Ino vs. Greg Keith w/Zoe Ammis

The announcers do their best not to dwell on Keith’s pedigree, instead drawing comparison between Ino’s roots and the considerable Japanese experience the younger man has had. As the match progresses, it starts to take on a very Eastern flavour, in particular a memorable exchange of stiff chops right in the middle of the ring, capped off when Keith lunges forward and stunningly knocks Ino clean off his feet with a lariat.

That shakes some cobwebs out and Ino… he’s fired up, invigorated, kicking hard out of the ensuing cover and cranking up the match’s tempo. Keith’s left having to put everything into it just to stand still… and you know what they say; if you’re standing still, you’re going backwards.

The Kobra’s Bite claims the win with aplomb.

http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z453/EddStoneNOTBPW/TCW/JayChord.jpg

Jay Chord, dressed for the street, texts intently, leaning back against a wall as his thumbs dance across the screen of his phone. Expensive, touch screen, custom casing.

A hand pins Chord’s shoulder to the wall; he starts, then looks indignant.

“Get your damn hands off me!”

http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z453/EddStoneNOTBPW/TCW/AaronAndrews.jpg

Aaron Andrews does not look like a happy camper.

“You. That blonde girl. What the hell is your game?”

Chord jerks away, freeing himself, then moodily pockets his phone.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, you paranoid moron!”

“You’re expecting me to belief she just shows up in and before our matches, and that she has NOTHING to do with you? You think I was born yesterday?”

“Well were you born stupid or did you have to work at it?”

“I am NOT playing around, Chord!”

Chord sneers. “If you’re having girl problems that’s your own business, Andrews. I’ve never seen her before in my life.”

Andrews balls his hands into fists, then slowly releases them, jabbing a finger in Chord’s face. “I’m watching you.”

“Whatever loser,” Chord backs away, then turns with a derisive ‘tch’ and walks off.

Andrews looks tempted to punch a wall, but instead just tips over a box and stomps off.

The camera pans around to the opposite side of the corridor. A slender hand pushes open the top of a supply crate.

Benny Benson vs. Wolf Hawkins w/Brooke Marsh

Although Benson’s not featured much in the new year, he takes it to the champion with a real eagerness to throw down. Hawkins, on a run of opponents closer to his own size, seems invigorated by the pace of the bout and returns Benson’s offence with interest. Still, as sweat breaks out on the champion’s brow as he narrowly evades a flying kick, it’s clear that the breakneck pace is taxing him.

Hawkins switches tack, and more and more, as time wears on, Hawkins resembles his mentor in his strategies. He slows the pace down, wears away at Benson with painful holds and technical judo throws, as well as, naturally, the odd bit of rule-bending when he thinks he can get away with it. Which, with Marsh at ringside, is quite often.

Benson tries to adapt, and for a while he’s able to trade mat wrestling with Hawkins, demonstrating that he’s got more than one string to his bow. Wolf changes gear again, and now he’s throwing big right hands, hard kicks to the side and midsection. The champion’s versatility is too much, and as Benson rebounds off the ropes from a skull rattling European uppercut, the Full Moon Rising connects flush to the jaw.

Ricky Dale Johnson & Rocky Golden vs. Eddie Peak & Rick Law

RDJ steps into the ring first for this one, and Peak’s there to meet him. Law doesn’t look at all in the mood to argue. The two heavyweight brawlers meet each other immediately, connecting in a blur of flying fists , breaking only as RDJ stumbles back, victim of a Peak headbutt. Johnson steps back in though, sending Peak’s head snapping back with a brutal hook to the face. Peak’s staggered for a second… and then grins at his adversary.

Rhodes: There’s no way that didn’t hurt him, just no way.

Doakes: Hurting Peak’s one thing, but you have to keep in mind that he’s too in love with fighting to let the pain show… if anything I think it just spurs him on.

RDJ, slowing, looking a little hurt, tags in Golden. Peak beckons him, and is knocked flat on his back as the powerhouse Rocky just plain leaps at him and lets his size do the work. Rocky regains his footing and Peak rolls up, eyes narrowing. He tags in Law, shooting him a glare. The lawman, a point to prove, takes it to Golden, and the brawl starts anew.

It’s a good contest, with the allowance that the four men involved are never going to put on a technical masterclass. When Law’s the best grappler in the ring, well… enough said. Peak is the driving force behind his team, seeming to just get more and more energised, raring to go with every shot he takes, smile turning into a rictus, but remaining fixed nonetheless. He brutalises RDJ, beats him down with rights, lefts, double axe handles… Johnson pops up and in sheer desperation, plants him with the Southern Justice! RDJ outright collapses without even the energy to make a cover. Law steps into the ring, ready – over the protests of Sam Sparrow – to tip the scales, and then stops dead.

http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z453/EddStoneNOTBPW/TCW/JoeyMinnesota.jpg

Law pales as Joey Minnesota comes bombing down the ramp, and doesn’t wait for his enemy to reach the ring. Law bails out under the ropes – Minnesota slides in and then straight back out, eyes only for Law. The corrupt cop though, has no interest in being caught, and flees through the crowd, Minnesota in hot pursuit… but without actual contact between the pair, there’s no cause for the DQ. RDJ makes it to his corner, gets the tag, and Golden ducks a wild punch from Eddie and grabs hold of him-

Azaria: Eddie Peak is nearly 350lbs, he surely isn’t going to do what I’m-

Doakes: THE RACK! IT’S THE RACK!

Peak lets out an agonised scream that trails off into pained, near-maniacal laughter as Golden gets him into the torture rack hold he’s brought back to relevancy. Peak’s arms flail, caught, unable to escape but unwilling to give in. Golden glances up, almost seems to shrug, and then drops to a knee, wrenching Peak even further with the impact.

Spine contorted at an impossible angle, still grinning that mad grin, Eddie Peak submits.

Easy card to call apparently! Not all that surprised - with the rankings needing some setting for the time being, a lot of matches are just about getting people established and some time on screen and hence there aren't really a lot of cases where anyone's being upset majorly.</p><p> </p><p>

Bach vs. an F- overness DWN somehow upstages almost the entire card, albeit with great chemistry but otherwise grades are about where I'd expected them to be. C+ from the New Wave is nice (carried no doubt by their A* experience) and although four main eventers scoring a (low) B might be cause for concern, it's bearing in mind two of them were pushed up there by new signings and aren't <em>that</em> over... and there was also a stark lack of selling ability in the ring. It was funny when I realised how much of a brawling battle that match was though. Don't think there was better than an E+ top row in anything but rumble in that match.</p><p> </p><p>

Side note - still loving 2013's changes to angles. Means I can give so much more time to undercard storylines.</p>

Joel set his pen down and shut his battered notepad.

It was one of the intangibles in wrestling, one of those aspects of a match that you couldn't really plan for, couldn't see coming ahead of time.

And it was hard enough to explain exactly what it was. Beyond synchronised styles, or experience in working matches, or individual psychology... some people just grasped how to work with one another. Others couldn't get on the same page. Joel had run across plenty of both. He'd had it with his old pal Bob Oxford, and on the other side of the coin had never been able to lock up properly with Monty Walker back in the HGC days.

Joel could only label it chemistry, and whilst he'd known about a few of the combinations of workers that knew just how to play off one another, with the new talent came a lot of surprising revelations.

Good ones, too.

Roger Cage and Winston worked together in just about every way it was possible to do so. Sammy Bach could draw something special out of Davis Wayne Newton. Kings Cross looked more at home in each other's corners than tag teams Joel had seen that were together for years.

Bottom line... there were a lot of guys, all of a sudden, that had a grasp of each other.

Made Joel anxious.

You didn't get good luck without the bad luck, in the wrestling business.

Something, somewhere, was going to bomb, he felt it in his bones.

Drugs testing was scheduled for early next month.

Moves are looking sharper and more polished than before, and both of them look energised for the new lease on life. There almost couldn’t be a greater contrast to the fun-loving pair than the men opposite the ring to them… Bryan Vessey’s sense of humour might exist only on the negative plane, and Wolf Hawkins isn’t a barrel of laughs, to be completely honest.</p><p> </p><p> What they are though, is very good wrestlers, and whilst the power game is enough to take Hawkins off his feet, to plant Vessey hard… these two have made their name at the very top against the biggest and best powerhouses of TCW. Steadily, Wolf reels the match into control, and after a moment to get Vessey on the same page, the duo isolate Tana and begin to work over his knee – going again and again to the big man’s vulnerable leg. Chop blocks, single-leg crabs, dropping elbows onto it… soon enough Tana is limping heavily, and that’s the decider – when he finally makes the tag, and Hawkins leapfrogs Vessey to land a sky high Full Moon Rising to Fonzarelli… Tana’s too hurt and slowed down to break it up – a Vessey line to the face is just insult to injury.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Bryan Vessey and Wolf Hawkins defeated Sorry for Party Rockin’</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: B-</strong></p><p> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z453/EddStoneNOTBPW/TCW/BryanVessey.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="34946" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>Vessey’s hardly stepped back through the curtain before an angry voice waylays him.<p> </p><p> “Hold it.”</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z453/EddStoneNOTBPW/TCW/JoshuaTaylor.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> Vessey turns. Cornell seems thoroughly disgruntled by the presence of Eric Tyler, often casting glances towards him, as if trying to sound him out, or predict interference. It bleeds through in every aspect of what he does; the snap with which he executes moves, his demeanour, the aggressive tactics… Tornado isn’t happy and he doesn’t seem to care who learns about it. Unusually, this actually sets RDJ on the back foot as he attempts to deal with the atypical scenario of someone who is smaller and faster than him still standing toe to toe. Still, RDJ has competed in hundreds, maybe thousands of matches over the course of his career, and after a while, he seems to get Tornado’s measure, taking a big right hook… and retaliating with one hell of a haymaker!<p> </p><p> That snaps Tornado out of it, and whilst remaining aggressive, his approach is tempered with a little more caution for a while. RDJ’s on the back foot… but for every attack he lands, Tornado is slowed that little bit more, damaged further, and if anyone knows how to capitalise on lapses, it’s RDJ. The pivotal point of the match, Tornado launching a Star Maker to try and wrap it up, whilst RDJ, knowing that he can’t possibly get out of the way, responds with a Leaping Lariat! The two men wipe each other out, downed for Sam Sparrow’s count of nine, and as they groggily get to their feet, it’s Tornado’s lunge that’s desperate, it’s Tornado who got rattled more… and it’s RDJ that snags hold of his opponent to land the Southern Justice.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>RDJ defeated Troy Tornado</strong></p><p><strong> Grade: B</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><p> <span style="font-size:12px;"><strong>SHOW RATING: B</strong></span></p>

This show has possibly my favourite angle I've ever booked in it.

By the numbers TV show as we build towards the early events in the game, and a little bit of character and plot development. Really impressed by the B- from Peak/Huggins vs. Allen/Jett... and somewhat disappointed by Bach/Cornell. I can only imagine I didn't give them long enough out there.

Joel took a moment to breathe as he watched Total Wrestling go off the air with Jason Azaria's sign-off. He was never more tense than when the show was running, and he could hardly relax for an instant before it was over. It had become a little easier to cope with after so many years in his role, but he doubted that the nerves would ever truly go away; and this without competing outside the dark the bulk of the time. He certainly didn't envy Tommy working in addition to trying to operate TCW's day-to-day running.

So, a decent enough show. Nothing exceptional, but it did the job Joel had wanted it to do, as well as assuaging some of his fears about Ricky and Troy. Regardless of age in RDJ's case and wear and tear in Troy's, they could still put on a TV main event. Good to see the newcomers getting results too, made him feel better about the spending spree. Now, time to get to the hotel and get some well deserved shut-eye-

Bryan Vessey stood right outside the door of Joel's office. Joel paused.

"Hi Joel."

"Bryan," Joel's tone was... well, he didn't want to call it guarded, but Bryan never spoke to him unless he had some sort of angle.

Vessey nodded. "I like that Ernest kid that you brought in. Knows his way around the ring. Has respect for the business."

You mean, he was respectful to you. Joel thought, but did not say.

"Good kid," Vessey repeated. "I'm thinking of letting him run with me for a bit. Show him the ropes. Teach him a few things."

"Well Bryan, that's" awful. "Great. I know you've got a lot of knowledge to pass on."

Vessey beamed. Inwardly, Joel crumpled up a fledgling set of hopes and tossed them aside. Bryan mentoring Ernest. Great. That was exactly the type of influence a young and impressionable newcomer needed.

"One more thing. This storyline I'm in. What's next?"

Joel gestured Bryan to follow and started explaining.

Politics. Joel hated politics.

I hate you Bryan Vessey. Brought back memories of Paul Levesque taken under the wing of Michael S. Hickenbottom, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash. Anyway, keep it coming with the great backstage segments/in-ring storylines balance! :D
