1994 Triangle Match: WCW

Recommended Posts

It's July 1994. WCW has just stunned the wrestling world by signing the previously retired Hulk Hogan to a contract, convincing him to return to the ring in a scheduled world title bout at Bash at the Beach against The Nature Boy Ric Flair. This dream match has been decades in the making with Hogan and Flair serving as foils for each other from across promotions.

With the dream match in sight, WCW owner Ted Turner made a second stunning, though less spectacular move. Pushing aside vice president Eric Bischoff, Turner has brought in the young Johnny Ace, a wrestler most famous for his work in Japan, to run the show. Turner has been mesmerized by the athletic style he witnessed at AJPW show while in Japan for business and is hoping that Ace can help bring some of that style to America with WCW. Time will tell if it's successful.

WCW Tapings are in the books for the upcoming episodes of WCW Saturday Night & Main Event!

In a night of exciting action on Saturday Night, WCW will offer a flavor if the international while putting all of our singles titles on the line just a few weeks ahead of Bash at the Beach! Momentum can change in an instant!

Lord Steven Regal has issued an open challenge to the American wrestlers of WCW, declaring that not one of them can beat him. The flag waiving, 2x4 toting, super Patriot Jim Duggan has stepped up the challenge and will take on Regal for the gold! Hoooooooooooo!

Plus, unable to wait for Bash at the Beach, Ricky Steamboat has secured a US title match with Steve Austin! Both men have agreed that whoever wins the match on Saturday night will get to pick the stipulation for their rematch at Bash at the Beach!

And, in an effort to bring a taste of the international wrestling scene to our fans, WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel has ordered Ric Flair to defend the WCW World Championship against Mexican wrestling superstar El Hijo del Santo in our main event! This match is part of WCW's ongoing working agreement with AAA out of Mexico. Could the Nature Boy lose his gold before he gets to his icon vs icon match up with Hogan?

Here are the quick picks for Saturday Night!

Diamond Dallas Page vs Scott Stud

Bad Attitude vs The Armstrong Brothers

Brian Knobbs vs Arn Anderson

Lord Steven Regal © vs Jim Duggan for the World Television Championship

Steve Austin © vs Ricky Steamboat for the US Heavyweight Championship

Ric Flair © vs El Hijo del Santo for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

Obvious squash is obvious.

Bad Attitude vs The Armstrong Brothers

Don't remember who they were, but I do know that the Armstrongs were allergic to winning.

Brian Knobbs vs Arn Anderson

I love Arn Anderson so much!

Lord Steven Regal © vs Jim Duggan for the World Television Championship

I hate Jim Duggan so much!

Steve Austin © vs Ricky Steamboat for the US Heavyweight Championship, likely by DQ or count out

I can't see Steamboat staying out of the main event very long. Have him beat Austin, pick the stipulation, and lose, before moving on.

Ric Flair © vs El Hijo del Santo for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

What a match!

Can't see any titles changing, the main event should be great but seem to remember when playing this mod Steve Austin vs Steamboat never scored as well as i expected but it may have been a different mod

Seems a pretty easy show to predict for at this early stage. Though I do question logic of having Austin and Steamboat wrestle to pick a stipulation AND for the title, when the next match will be a stip match FOR the title? The obvious answer is WCW.

To answer your last question, I'm glad you made the wcw comment. When I was booking it just felt like something wcw would have done. Plus, first show and all I figured what the hey, let's get a good match!

DDP has a huge upside being he is a decent talnet in ring and a really great talker the sky is the limit for DDP

Bad Attitude vs The Armstrong Brothers

Bobby Eaton forever even with Steve Keirn

Brian Knobbs vs Arn Anderson

Never bet against AA unless its a main event match

Lord Steven Regal © vs Jim Duggan for the World Television Championship

No title for you Mr Duggan. Steve Regal for World Champ in 95!!!!

Steve Austin © vs Ricky Steamboat for the US Heavyweight Championship

I expect a dq type finish were Austin accidentally gets himself DQ'd

Ric Flair © vs El Hijo del Santo for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

Without a doubt an awesome Main Event for this show would love to have seen it actually happen hopefully his overness in the area doesnt hurt the grade to much as this should be an awe inspiring match.

From one WCW Booker to another take them down and don't let yourself fall off the mountain like i did.

Not even going to hazard to guess at predictions for the moment, because I was a WWF girl in the mid-90s (and also, you know, under 10), so my only real memories of WCW involve World Champion David Arquette and nWo 4 a week or so before switching to one of the rival nWos. :p

Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to your first show. Love the concept you guys have, and I'm definitely interested to see how you guys reimagine my childhood. ;)

Taped at the Pyramid Arena in Memphis, TN

Attendance: 15,000 (SELL OUT)

Announcers: Tony Schiavone & Jesse Ventura

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/TonySchiavone.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/JesseVentura.jpg

Tony and Jesse welcome us to WCW Saturday Night, with Tony proclaiming this to be the biggest episode of the show in history. Tonight, all singles titles in the company are on the line, PLUS, Hulk Hogan makes his studio debut! Ventura scoffs at the idea that Hogan's debut makes it a big show.

Match #1

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/DDP.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/ScottyRiggs2.jpg

Diamond Dallas Page vs Scott Stud

DDP taunts Stud before the match begins, drawing a slap across the face as the bell rings. Stud gets in a little quick offense before DDP catches him with knee to the gut followed by a belly to belly suplex. DDP taunts the crowd as he takes over the match. Page eventually sets a helpless Stud up and drops him with the Diamond Cutter for the relatively easy win. As Page walks to the back with his music playing he is caught on camera saying "No one in this company can beat D...D...P!"

Winner: Diamond Dallas Page via pinfall following the Diamond Cutter

Grade: D+

Match #2

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SteveKeirn.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/BobbyEaton2.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/BrianJames.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/BradArmstrong.jpg

Bad Attitude vs The Armstrong Brothers (Brian & James)

In a bout with exciting action but not much in the way of heat, the Armstrong Brothers gave Bad Attitude all they could handle. Brad Armstrong put on an outstanding display of ring work and the segments with he and Eaton really entertained the crowd. After getting Keirn down with a bridging German Suplex, Brad got hit in the stomach with an elbow from the top by Bobby Eaton. Brian chased Eaton out of the ring but Steve Keirn was able to get the pinfall on the writhing Armstrong brother.

Winners: Bad Attitude by pinfall

Grade: C

Match #3

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/ArnAnderson.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/BrianKnobbs.jpg

Arn Anderson vs Brian Knobbs

This one was a slugfest from the bell, with Tony expressing amazement at the hard hitting action throughout. Knobbs and Double A traded offense throughout the 12 minute match with Knobbs controlling most of it towards the end after a blatant low blow. Knobbs went to the outside to get a steel chair, but was stunned when Dustin Rhodes ran down to the ring and grabbed it before he could swing it at Arn! Knobbs argued with Dustin, turned around and got dropped with a DDT from Arn!

Winner: Arn Anderson via pinfall following a DDT after a distraction by Dustin Rhodes

Grade: C

Post Match: Arn gives Dustin a look of understanding as he walks back to the back without saying a word. Knobbs is in the ring, holding his head screaming "you'll pay cowboy!"

Backstage Segment

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/BobbyHeenan.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SherriMartel2.jpg

Cameras catch Bobby Heenan talking to Sherri Martel backstage. After some awkward flattery, Heenan tells Sherri that nobody wants Hulk Hogan out of WCW anymore than he does. He explains that for a cut of Flair’s championship earnings he can put a plan in place to keep the belt on Flair! Sherri rolls her eyes and walks away, leaving The Brain looking puzzled.

Heenan: What? I told you I liked the eyeliner!

Match #4

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/StevenRegal.jpg w/http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SirWilliam.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/JimDuggan.jpg

WORLD TELEVISION TITLE

Lord Steven Regal © vs Jim Duggan

Lord Steven Regal draws pretty decent heat from the crowd with snobbish antics as he makes his way to the ring. He grabs the microphone and after some nasty looks to the crowd begins to berate the knuckledragging Americans and asks where all their heroes have gone. The crowd erupts with chants of USA as Jim Duggan struts to the ring.

In a burst of offense, Duggan takes control from the start, firing away with heavy hands on the Brit. Regal at one point leaves the ring to compose himself and begins to get irate as Duggan leads the crowd in a “USA!USA!USA!” chant. As he’s about to be counted out, Regal goads Duggan into sliding outside the ring, only to slide back in himself and stomping Duggan’s head when he tries to return. After a few more minutes of Regal offense, Duggan tries to get back the momentum with the crowd behind him. When he attempts a running clothesline, Regal drop toe holds him to the mat and locks on a crossface chicken wing for the submission!

Winner: and still World Television Champion, Lord Steven Regal via submission with the crossface chicken wing.

Grade: C-

Post Match

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/ThePatriot3.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/MarcusBagwell2.jpg

Lord Steven Regal slides out of the ring and gets Duggan’s 2x4. He gets back in the ring and begins beating Duggan as the crowd boos mercilessly. Suddenly, The Patriot and Marcus Bagwell rush the ring, chasing off a laughing Steven Regal by Sir William grabs Regal’s title and follows up the ramp.

Grade: C

Backstage Interview with Mean Gene Okerlund

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/GeneOkerlund.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/RicFlair8.jpg

Ric Flair: Mean…woooooooooooo….Gene! My entire career I have walked that aisle. I’ve beaten them all. I put down Terry Funk, I put down Ricky Steamboat. I made Harley Race submit. Dusty Rhodes cried to his fat mama when I put him in the Figure Four. I am the 13 time Heavyweight Champion of the world. You would think………..woooo!....you would think that I’m a happy man Gene.

Gene: Well you have had quite the career to date Nature Boy but tonight we need to talk about…

Flair: Oh I know Gene. Tonight we need to talk about the spray tanned gorilla, Hulk Hogan. You know Gene, everywhere I’ve gone in my career, from Charlotte to woooooooooooo Memphis I’ve walked down that aisle as champion and walked back down that aisle as champion when the match was done. But through it all there’s been one name they’ve held over my head. One man they said I couldn’t beat. Hulk Hogan.

Gene: Well it is the true Clash of the Titans Nature Boy. Hulk Hogan vs Ric Flair, the match we never thought we’d see. Next Saturday Ted Turner has promised a contract signing on Saturday Night. Will you make it official?

Flair: Gene…nothing would make me happier. I’m going to sign that contract and then I’m going to go on to Bash at the Beach and I’m going to wrap Hogan’s legs in the Figure Four and the entire world will watch Hulkamania cry out “Please Nature Boy…please I surrender!” Woooooooooo! Hulk Hogan will NEVER…woooo…by god Never! Hold this title. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Match #5

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SteveAustin.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/RickySteamboat2.jpg

UNITED STATES HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Steve Austin © vs Ricky Steamboat

In a bout that will be rematched at Bash at the Beach in just a few short weeks, Steamboat and Steve Austin went at each other in a slow paced, methodical technical match. Tony and Jesse expressed their surprise at Austin seemingly hanging in with Steamboat on a technical basis. Steamboat went to the top for a flying karate chop after a series of arm drags only to have Austin pull referee Nick Patrick in front of him to take the blunt of the hit. While Steamboat checked on the referee, Austin nailed Steamboat with the title! As he began to roll over Steamboat and tried to awaken Patrick, Randy Anderson slid into the ring and called for the bell, disqualifying Austin!

Winner: Ricky Steamboat via disqualification. Steve Austin retains the United States Heavyweight Championship

Grade: C

Post Match: Austin is livid with Anderson for disqualifying him, realizing that Steamboat now picks the stipulation for their match at Bash at the Beach! He knocks Anderson out cold and storms off with his title.

Backstage Segment

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/BobbyHeenan.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SherriMartel2.jpg

Bobby Heenan is seen sneaking around backstage and slowly opens a door that he believes to be Ric Flair’s dressing room. Instead he stumbles in upon Sherri Martel in corset! Heenan looks impressed as Sherri screams like a banshee in his direction and begins throwing shoes and anything else she can find at him. As he closes the door, Heenan can be heard hollering into the dressing room for Sherri to tell Flair about his offer.

Heenan: Man. What a set of pipes!

Match #6

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/RicFlair8.jpg w/http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SherriMartel2.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/ElHijodelSanto.jpg

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Ric Flair © vs El Hijo del Santo

The crowd wasn’t very familiar with El Hijo del Santo, and neither frankly were the WCW announcers. They began the match by focusing completely on the upcoming bout at Bash at the Beach. As the exciting encounter went on however, the announcers began to put over the idea that we might have an upset in the making!

El Hijo del Santo quickly gained the support of the crowd as he put on a show. A shocked Flair was getting caught at every turn.

Tony: I’m not sure Flair is used to working at this fast of a pace! Santo has a shot to pull this off!

Ventura: Flair has the cardio of a champion Tony. This kid’s got spunk, I’ll give him that, but he’s no Ric Flair!

Eventually Sherri distracted the referee and allowed Flair to do a groin shot to escape a sleeper hold and it was all downhill from there for Santo. Flair began taunting Santo by doing the Macarena in the ring. An incensed Santo shot to his feet and got back on offense before Sherri pulled his feet out while he ran the ropes. Santo argued with Sherri and got chop blocked and locked into the Figure Four!

Winner: and still WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair via submission by Figure Four Leglock.

Grade: B

Closing Segment

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/HulkHogan7.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/JimmyHart2.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/MrT-1.jpg

Ric Flair and Sherri stomp on El Hijo del Santo, mocking him and screaming at him. The crowd in the Pyramid Arena erupts when Hulk Hogan, Jimmy Hart and Mr. T make their way to the ring. Hart and Sherri begin arguing while Hogan and Flair stare each other eye to eye! The scene descends into chaos as Sherri and Hart begin an all out war with each other! Mr. T grabs Jimmy Hart while security and referees rush the ring to keep the chaos under control!

Tony: Join us next week fans when these two titans sit down with Ted Turner to sign the contract the world has been waiting for!

The Ace Report

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/JohnnyAce3.jpg

Bookin' ain't easy...

The first week of tapings is in the books. There is no question that there were some significant disappointments to come out of the shows, despite the overall good grade of Saturday Night. I was highly frustrated with the lack of success for the Steamboat/Austin match. Despite putting on a really good show, the crowd just didn't seem to get fully behind it. I know I've spoken with the creative team and there is some concern that Steamboat may just not have the ability to connect to the crowd like he used to. I'm also disappointed with the overall lack of workers on the roster who are prepared to adapt to the more athletic, hard hitting style I'd like to see implemented. Still, the overall show ratings were good. We'll see how the ratings look after they are released in a few days.

As we move towards Bash at the Beach there is a lot of excitement in the WCW locker room. Our locker room rating is at 100%, which is a big improvement even of the rating it had when I took this job. We've also seen a spike in our momentum. As we continue to implement some changes, there is also some fear in the back. We've let go of some workers and have issued contracts to quite a number of workers throughout the world. WCW will definitely have a different flavor of the next few months.

I can also announce that WCW has released the following workers:

Brady Boone, Dennis Knight, Bobby Walker, Mark Starr, Pez Whatley, referee Mickey Jay, and lastly, due to his terrible performance against DDP on Saturday Night, Scotty Riggs.

WCW has signed contract extensions with:

Vader, Alex Wright, Terry Taylor and Cactus Jack. I am excited to have them on board for the foreseeable future. Jack's contract is not exclusive as he wishes to continue his career with ECW and I did not object. Vader's contract is exclusive however and he will be finishing his commitments to the UWFi shortly before beginning his new written deal. I am thrilled to have him on board for the next several years. Vader is an amazing performer and is one of the super stars of the show.

I can also confirm the following signings that will be joining the WCW roster over the next few weeks:

Joel Deaton, Billy Black and Jerry Lynn.

There are rumors of additional contracts being signed and/or considered, but at this time I neither confirm nor deny. I can confirm that the decision has been made to completely revamp the undercard and, more importantly, the tag team division. The plan over the next few months is to really flesh out the undercard of WCW and put on exciting matches up and down the card with a vibrant tag team division.

Wk 1 Prediction Results

soxfan93: 6/6

NWAvsWWF: 5/6

smwilliams: 5/6

Beejus: 5/6

franticloser: 5/6

rvdjrv2002: 6/6 +bonus point for calling the finish right on Steamboat/Austin

Was an easy first week obviously, but that will change as the roster turns over and I move on from the preset story lines.

For our first month prediction contest, whoever is in the lead by Bash at the Beach will get to pick the stipulation for the Steamboat/Austin title match from 3 options I provide.

Like the format and the write up, not too long but still detailed so very good! Personally I think Hogan's gotta win at Bash at the Beach, at this time he was still the hottest thing in wrestling and i think 99/100 bookers would of gave him the title on that night

I enjoyed the format. I'm not a very avid reader, so short write-ups are definitely preferable to me.

Not exactly necessary to point out, but I liked how you didn't steal Foley away from ECW. I'm just afraid that Hive will steal him from both of you. :p

Old Russo would have a real fight on his hands if he tried to steal Jack.
