WCW Saturday Night 01/26/1991

Location: Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, Texas

Attendance: 9200 (Sell Out)

Rating: 3.10

Before the WCW Saturday Night opening video played we got a word from the man called Sting!

“So Flair, you think you and your cronies managed to take me out, think again! You may have managed to take my World title through devious means, and your henchmen did a pretty good job at trying to put me out permanently by attacking me prior to our last match, but the little Stingers know it is going to take a lot more than that to keep me from getting my retribution tomorrow night at WrestleWar! Me, Lex, and the Steiner Brothers are going to stop the Four Horsemen…once and for all!”

Match: ‘The Natural’ Dustin Rhodes vs. Kevin Sullivan

Referee: David Manning

Road Agent:Bob Armstrong

Outcome: Dustin Rhodes defeated Kevin Sullivan with a Bulldog at 7:47

My Notes: The fans in Houston got a pleasant surprise when one of their native sons made his WCW debut against the veteran Sullivan. Using dirty tricks, Kevin Sullivan managed to take the momentum away from Dustin Rhodes, but it was the Rhodes youthful exuberance that let to him getting the Bulldog victory.

My Grade: C

After the match Dustin Rhodes was celebrating with the fans, when Stan ‘The Lariat’ Hansen suddenly slid into the ring and attacked him from behind with the cowbell. The surprise attack had Dustin vulnerable, but once more he managed to overcome the odds and soon had Hansen back into the corner and was punching away when out from the crowd ran….

<a href="http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/TerryFunk1_zps09dabf1b.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/TerryFunk1_zps09dabf1b.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo TerryFunk1_zps09dabf1b.jpg"/></a>

……TERRY FUNK! He went right to work on Dustin Rhodes, and soon the Hansen and Funk had Rhodes down and were dropping elbows and boots on him as security finally ran out and managed to get the two former World Champions off of ‘The Natural.’

Match: Dynamite Kid vs. Konnan

Referee: Dick Woehrle

Road Agent:Grizzly Smith

Outcome: Dynamite Kid defeated Konnan at 7:39 with a Roll Up pinfall.

My Notes: Konnan attacked Dynamite Kid at the bell and the match degenerated into a bit of a deliberate brawl instead of the high flying one that fans had started to expect from the Cruiserweight division, one that Dynamite Kid won with a Roll Up.

My Grade: D

After the commercial break Larry Zbyszko was standing in the ring with a microphone:

“Listen you peons, for the last couple of weeks I have been hosting a Challenge on WCW Main Event, where I am giving some lucky guy in the back the opportunity to come out here and face me. If they can beat me, unlikely, or even prevent me from beating them in under ten minutes then they will have earned the opportunity to compare themselves to me The Living Legend. Thus far, I have beat everyone, and now I am here on Saturday Night looking for some sterner competition, so who wants to step into the ring with the one, and only….Living Legend tonight? Come on, don’t be shy….”

Match: ‘Living Legend’ Challenge: Larry Zbyszko vs. Norman

Referee: Mickey Jay

Road Agent:Bob Armstrong

Outcome: Larry Zbyszko defeated Norman at 8:11 with the Larry Land Dreamer

My Notes: It was the trucker Norman who answered the challenge of Larry Zbyszko, and he even managed to take the initial by using his size to his advantage. But the ‘Living Legend’ methodically wore him down, before winning the match with his patented submission hold.

Magnum T.A was standing backstage with Diamond Dallas Page, and what appeared to be his newest client:

“Hello everyone, last week we saw the end of the line for the Freebirds as their manager, Diamond Dallas Page destroyed this contracts on national TV. Tonight he granted us an interview to talk about that, as well as to introduce to you, his newest client….”

“Stop right there, because there is no way I’m going to take this time to talk about those two washed up scumbags, I’m here to talk about the “Diamond Studd” Scott Hall! Look at him, he is 6 foot seven, 298lbs of twisted steel and sex appeal and with my help, he is going right to the top, and it’s going to start tonight when we enact a little measure of revenge…..good God!”

Match: The Four Horsemen vs. The Young Pistols

Referee: David Manning

Road Agent:Bob Armstrong

Outcome: Barry Windham pinned Steve Armstrong using assistance from the ropes at 8:22

My Notes: In the first preview match for our WrestleWar Main Event, the tag team of Tully Blanchard and Barry Windham locked up with the Young Pistols. The Pistols tried to use their speed to keep them one step ahead of the wily veterans, but were soon overcome by the Horsemen’s cheating tactics and the Horsemen picked up the big victory

Eric Bischoff had the unenviable task of catching up to Stan Hansen and Terry Funk after the attack they had committed on Dustin Rhodes:

“Gentlemen, we are here in your home state of Texas, and you just put quite a beating on another fellow Texan, and all the fans are wondering why?”

“Everyone knows that I am one of the greatest wrestlers in the world, but more importantly I am one of the greatest wrestlers to ever come from Texas. The only wrestlers that are in the same league with me are the Funks, and I am so proud to be joined today by one of the men who trained me, the former world Champion Terry Funk! And both of us are sick to our stomachs that we have to live with the fact that we are from the same state as that big, fat slob Dusty Rhodes, but when people think of famous Texas wrestlers, that is who they are thinking about! So together we want to wipe the mat with Dusty Rhodes, and send him right back up north with all of those other wussy Yankees! He may not have been brave enough to come to WCW tonight, but we know that if we beat on his son enough, he’s more then likely to show up. We don’t want to wait though, so we are issuing a challenge to Dustin to find a tag partner and meet us tomorrow night at WrestleWar!”

“Dusty, Dusty, Dusty….are you watching Dusty? You and me have history that goes back almost two decades now, but I’ve never been able to quite finish you off have I? And to make it even worse, you’ve gone to seed and now we need to put up with the next generation of Rhodes, but that’s okay because you’ve gone and given us a target to beat on. I really, really, really hope you show up tomorrow so that we can make sure we break you…..right in front of your little son!”

Match: Brian Pillman vs Jushin Thunder Liger

Referee: Randy Anderson

Road Agent: Jody Hamilton

Outcome: Jushin Thunder Liger defeated Brian Pillman with the Sheer-Drop Brainbuster at 7:54

My Notes: These two men really brought the high flying moves with a back and forth match that the Japanese important managed to just barely win.

Magnum T.A was standing with the York Foundation, trying to get some answers from them over the surprising return of Terry Taylor:

“Terry…”

“The name is Terrence Taylor now; please do not refer to me as Terry.”

“Fine, Terrence, the fans want to know how it is you are back in WCW and what you are doing working with the York Foundation.”

“I will answer that question, you do not need to bother yourself to worry about what these people say anymore Terrence. Especially a stupid question like that, you will recall that in the match it was Terry Taylors career on the line against mine, and Terry Taylor is done, and has been replaced by the newer, better Terrence Taylor!”

“Thank you Michael, you are so right, just like you’ve always been….just like the computer always has been. And thanks to the stock tips from that little baby, I now have more money than I would have made in years working as Terry Taylor, so I definitely don’t feel like I owe the fans anything!”

“Fine, maybe not the fans, but what about Z-Man?”

“Wrong place, wrong time, sorry Z-Man.”

“That’s enough for now, we have a match we need to go and prepare for now!”

Match: WCW World Tag Team Championship: The Steiner Brothers© vs. El Cubano/Rip Rogers

Referee: Mark Curtis

Road Agent:Jody Hamilton

Road Agent Observations: Rip Rogers and El Cubano did not work as a Tag Team at all

Outcome: Scott Steiner defeated Rip Rogers with a Camel Clutch at 7:48

My Notes: In the second preview match for the WrestleWar Wargames match, the Tag Team Champions decided to put their belts on the line to really amp up the intensity. Add to that the fact that it was the first time that El Cubano and Rip Rogers had teamed together, and they were taken apart by the Steiner Brothers in a successful title defense.

After the commercial break Teddy Long was standing in the ring, with Ron Simmons and was calling out Butch Reed to come out and talk and make peace. Butch Reed walked out from the back and looked at both men:

“The only reason I came out here is to let you know there is NO way that I am going to ever team with that nobody again, I’m sick of carrying him, and I’m sick of your big mouth!”

Butch Reed went to walk away, but when Teddy Long stopped Ron Simmons from grabbing him, Reed quickly attacked him and sent both Simmons and Long flying. Reed wasn’t done and he was soon on top of Simmons and was punching away at this face, before security once more had to run out and stop the fight.

Match:The York Foundation vs. Z-Man and the Skyscrapers

Referee: Dick Woehrle

Road Agent: Mike Graham

Road Agent Observations: Mike Graham tried to keep ‘Big Cat’ Curtis Hughes and Sid Vicious out of the ring as much as possible, but that may have hurt the match as the fans expected them to be in there

Outcome: Sid Vicious defeated Michael Wallstreet with a Chokeslam at 11:54

My Notes: Z-Man was looking for some revenge, but Terrence Taylor kept tagging out when Z-Man would tag in. Near the end of the match the six men were all in the ring and Dick Woehrle was trying to get some control, so he didn’t notice the “Diamond Studd” Scott Hall attack Dan Spivey, and the two fought out through the crowd. In the ring Sid Vicious nailed Michael Wallstreet with a Chokeslam and got the victory for his team.

Match: WCW United States Championship: Lex Luger© vs. Arn Anderson

Referee: Mickey Jay

Road Agent: Bob Armstrong

Outcome: Arn Anderson defeated Lex Luger with a Spinebuster at 18:59

My Notes: Arn Anderson worked over the leg of Lex Luger right from the beginning of the match, and would continue to go back to it throughout the match each time Lex Luger seemed to be taking back control of the match. The finish saw Lex attempt to lift Arn up to his shoulders for the Torture Rack, only to have his knee go out and Arm slipped off his back and hit the Spinebuster for the victory and to become the NEW United States Champion

Backstage Michael Wallstreet was with Terrence Taylor and the WCW TV Championship, and said that even thought others had defended the TV title at every opportunity, he was not going to be defending it except when he wanted too. 20 Years of World Championship Wrestling: DVD/Blu Ray:

For those interested in the first part of this interview click here

“That was the plan Jim, I knew that if we ever wanted to get anywhere near the same level as the competitors we needed to present something different than what was going on elsewhere, we needed to be innovative.”

“We’ll speak a little more about some of the innovations later, but already in the first month I find it interesting we got to see a couple of those innovations. First the Cruiserweight division, but I think a big one was the change to having monthly PPV events….”

“Oh boy, and didn’t that stir up a lot of controversy, you have no idea how many people I pissed off when I convinced Ted to actually go ahead with it. But I think if I hadn’t been the one to pull the trigger on it, someone would have sooner or later. The revenues that were coming in from pay per view wasn’t the greatest at that time obviously, but it was an untapped market that had the potential to lead to millions of extra revenue on a monthly basis. Of course it also meant thinking outside of the box, and there wasn’t a lot of people in the company who were keen on doing that. Then there was the TV execs who were none too pleased that I was switching away from the Clash of the Champions model that had been so popular for years at that point. Finally there were the wrestlers who weren’t pleased about having to add that PPV into their schedule, but when they started to see the extra money it was bringing in for them I think that won them over.”

"Looking back do you still think it was a good plan to start off by having six of the PPVs be only two hours long at a cheaper rate, and the other six being three hours long as a higher price point?"

"And that's that question, did we miss out on extra revenue because of that decision? That decision has been double guessed and debated through the years, but I still think it was the right one considering that we were changing the model of things, and I wanted to ease the fans in. Further, it allowed us to still build towards those three hour ones and make them a little extra special."

“When you think back on the first month you were in charge, what are some of the things you remember most?”

“That first month in 1991 was one that I will never forget for both positive and negative reasons. When I first took over I knew there would be some resistance, but I wasn’t expecting that there would be so many people in the back who would resent me just because I had never been in a wrestling company. They all thought they knew best because of the years they had in the business, and yet many of them weren’t willing to give up their “spots,” even though we needed to get younger if we wanted to have any shot at attracting a new audience. “

“It’s interesting you mentioned younger guys when we saw some veterans join WCW at WrestleWar.”

“Ha, that is very true, but as a fan I personally was extremely excited by the WCW debuts of….”

Just found this diary yesterday and it's already one of my favorites. Good work, cant wait to see what you got planned

Thank you for your very kind words, I hope you will continue to peak in as the story unfolds....

Finally, it is obviously easier to put together a PPV then my regular weekly shows with less heads and less talking, but I will wait a couple of days so people can get their predictions in.

I'm glad to know I helped inspire this, because it's been a really fun read so far. I love the retrospective DVD bits especially, and my initial reaction upon seeing that first one was "I totally want to steal this!" :D

After a brief introduction from Jim Ross and Gordon Solie, the show got started off as the two Texans Stan ‘The Lariat’ Hansen and Terry Funk came out from the back ready for their tag match. Dustin Rhodes came out and received a loud ovation from his hometown fans before he grabbed a microphone near the stage.

“You two challenged me to find a tag team partner, so I went out and found one of the greatest wrestlers in the world, he’s a form World Champion, a former United States Champion, a former TV Champion, and a former World Tag Team Champion, he is…..

Match: Dustin Rhodes/Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat vs. Stan Hansen/Terry Funk

Referee: David Manning

Road Agent: Bob Armstrong

Outcome:Ricky Steamboat defeated Terry Funk with a Diving Crossbody at 13:26

My Notes: The two Texans were both surprised and angry at the surprising pick of Ricky Steamboat as the tag team partner. The match started off quick with ‘The Dragon’ on the offense, before he tagged in Dustin Rhodes. Dustin came in with a few trademark Rhodes elbows, but soon Stan Hansen and Terry Funk had taken over the match. This went on for a while, before Dustin was able to desperately make the tag to Steamboat. Once more ‘the Dragon’ was a house of fire and things were turned around, with the finale of the match seeing Stan Hansen and Dustin Rhodes fighting outside and Ricky Steamboat hitting the Crossbody for the victory.

Match: WCW Cruiserweight Title Tournament Final: Dynamite Kid vs. Jushin Thunder Liger

Referee: Randy Anderson

Road Agent: Mike Graham

Road Agent Observations: Mike Graham noticed that there didn’t seem to be any chemistry between the two wrestlers, and it led to the match suffering

Outcome: Dynamite Kid pinned Jushin Thunder Liger following a Tombstone Piledriver to become the FIRST WCW Cruiserweight Champion at 7:49

My Notes: Brian Pillman joined Jim Ross and Gordon Solie at the commentary desk as these two went all out with moves that fans weren’t used to seeing, and lots of quick reversals, the final one being when Dynamite Kid caught Jushin Thunder Liger coming off the top rope, and turned it into a Piledriver to end the match

My Grade: D-

Following the match Jim Ross climbed into the ring with a microphone:

“I hope everyone is enjoying all of the action thus far, but we want to take a short break to welcome three legends of this sport to World Championship Wrestling. First up is a man considered to be one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He was the first United States Champion of all time, but perhaps is most famous for holding the World Heavyweight Championship an amazing eight times, born in Kansas City, Missouri….he is….

…..BRUNO SAMMARTINO! Finally, he is a three time World Heavyweight Champion, and the son of a plumber, and will be joining me and Gordon on commentary for the rest of the evening, ladies and gentlemen….from Austin, Texas…..

……DUSTY RHODES!

Match: Dan Spivey vs. ‘The Diamond Studd’ Scott Hall

Referee: Mark Curtis

Road Agent: Bob Armstrong

Outcome: Scott Hall wins with the Diamond Death Drop at 8:06

My Notes: The fans were still quite excited after the debut of the three legends, especially their native son Dusty Rhodes. Meanwhile everyone, including Dan Spivey, had no idea what to expect from ‘The Diamond Studd’ so things started out with a bit of a feeling out process. From there Scott Hall took over with a Belly to Back Suplex and a Chokeslam. Dan Spivey eventually recovered, but every time he seemed to be building momentum, Diamond Dallas Page would distract the referee. It happened one too many times for Dan Spivey, when it allowed Master Blaster Steel to enter the ring and attack Dan Spivey, which led to Scott Hall hitting Dan Spivey with the Diamond Death Drop to get the victory.

My Grade: C-

Match: Junkyard Dog vs. Vader

Referee: David Manning

Road Agent: Harley Race

Road Agent Observations:

Outcome: Vader wins by pinfall at 12:48

My Notes: From the moment the bell rang, Vader dominated the match, giving Junkyard Dog almost no offense. With stiff strikes, and a running Clothesline Vader wore the JYD down, and it was likely only the fans support the kept the match from ending sooner. Missy Hyatt looked distressed on the outside, while Paul E Dangerously was laughing his head off as Vader dropped Junkyard Dog with a Powerbomb and picked up the pinfall victory

My Grade: C

<a href="

http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/JunkyardDog_zpsfc8326b6.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/JunkyardDog_zpsfc8326b6.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo JunkyardDog_zpsfc8326b6.jpg"/></a><a href="http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/Vader0_zps1ce994d4.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/Vader0_zps1ce994d4.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Vader0_zps1ce994d4.jpg"/></a><a href="http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/Sting8_zps3fd84316.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/Sting8_zps3fd84316.jpg" border="0" alt="Sting photo Sting8_zps3fd84316.jpg"/></a>

After the match Vader dropped a splash on the helpless JYD a couple of times, before Paul E slid a steel chair into the ring. Picking up the chair Vader proceeded to smash it across the ribs of the prone Junkyard Dog, when the suddenly the fans all came to their feet as Sting came running down to the ring and Vader quickly hightailed it to the back with his manager. A concerned Sting checked on the Junkyard Dog as EMT’s came out from the back to attend to him.

Match: ‘Big Cat’ Curtis Hughes vs. Z-Man

Referee: Nick Patrick

Road Agent:Bruno Sammartino

Outcome: Z-Man won after hitting a Flying Drop Kick at 5:53

My Notes: Z-Man was looking to get a little revenge against the York Foundation, and although he had a little trouble against his bigger opponent, he was able to get the victory with his trademark Flying Drop Kick

My Grade: D+

Match: Butch Reed vs. Ron Simmons

Referee: Mickey Jay

Road Agent: Grizzly Smith

Outcome: The match went to a draw with a Double Count Out

My Notes: Neither men was accompanied by Teddy Long, and it was also pretty obvious that neither men liked each other as they quickly started punching away at each other. The hatred escalated throughout the match, and the conclusion of the match saw the two men fight to the outside of the ring, and were so wrapped up on beating each other around the arena they didn’t even notice that they were being counted out.

Match: WCW World Television Championship: Michael Wallstreet© vs. Sid Vicious

Referee: Mark Curtis

Road Agent: Jody Hamilton

Road Agent Observations: Jody Hamilton worried that the overbooked nature of the match didn’t go over well with the crowd

Outcome: Michael Wallstreet defeated Sid Vicious at 7:36 following his Flying Lariat

My Notes: Michael Wallstreet was followed out by Terrence Taylor, while Sid Vicious has no one to assist him. Wallstreet soon came to realize he couldn’t match up against the size of Sid Vicious who managed to throw him around the ring. After a Chokeslam, Terrence Taylor climbed up on the ring apron and got knocked off for his effort. That allowed Michael Wallstreet to attack Sid from behind, but soon Sid was in charge again, and Terrence Taylor climbed up on the ring apron again, and this time it was ‘The Diamond Studd’ Scott Hall who tried to attack Sid Vicious, but soon he was knocked off as well, but the distraction allowed Michael Wallstreet to his the Flying Lariat and sneak away with his TV title

My Notes: ‘The Enforcer’ Arn Anderson started the match off against Scott Steiner, and the two proceeded to put on a bit of a wrestling clinic, before Tully Blanchard was the entered the match allowing the former Tag Team Champions of the World to double team one half of the current Champions. The fans erupted when Scott Steiner managed to come back off the ropes after a Double Irish Whip to knock both wrestlers down with a Double Clothesline. It was at that time that Sting was allowed to enter into the ring, and he quickly went after Arn Anderson allowing Scott Steiner to tie up with Tully Blanchard. Both men had their opponents in the corner and had mounted them and were punching away at their head while the fans counted. Dropping down, the two sent Arn and Tully flying into each other in the middle of the ring. Barry Windham was the next one to enter, but he took his time, which distracted Scott and Sting enough that Arn and Tully were able to recover and attack them from behind. Barry jumped into the ring now and was kicking away at it. Drama built to see who would come in next, and the fans were a little surprised that it was Rick Steiner who got the nod, making Jim Ross note that perhaps Lex Luger was still suffering from sort of injury. Either way Rick managed to eject some adrenaline into the match for his side as he dropped all three of the Horsemen with Steinerlines. Sides were even again until the World Champion finally entered the match, and he went right after Sting in the corner, working away at him with Chops. Finally the ‘Match Beyond’ was able to begin when Lex Luger became the final wrestler in the ring. He tossed Tully Blanachard and Barry Windham into the steel wall before going after Ric Flair. Everyone was paired up, as Lex Luger went to lift Ric Flair up onto his shoulders with the Torture Rack, only to have his knee buckle and Ric Flair dropped off his back and took him down with a block to the knee. From there the Champion locked on his Figure Four, and with everyone distracted there was no one to help Lex out and he had no choice but to submit and end the match giving the Horsemen the big victory

20 Years of World Championship Wrestling: DVD/Blu Ray:

It's not that far back, but if you're too lazy to look for it and you missed part 2 click here

“...Ricky Steamboat, Harley Race, Bruno Sammartino and Dusty Rhodes. What I think is also important to note is how important of roles they were to play. Of course Ricky was so crucial to the early development of Dustin Rhodes, that Dusty would go on to also help out with later, not to mention everything else he did for us. Dusty really provided an instant boost to our programming when he was able to take over on commentary. Meanwhile having Legends like Harley and Bruno helping out backstage, just their presence really was phenomenal, and what Harley would do later on as a Manager....well that was just a lot of fun to plot out. And I'm not sure we would have been able to have nearly the success we did with the Worldwide Wrestling Talent Initiative if we didn't have Bruno.”

“We'll definitely be speaking about the Wrestling Talent Initiative later, but next I want to focus on the lead up to Superbrawl, which was the first real PPV legacy that you would create, what can you tell us about the lead in to it?”

“If you look back at that first month, I'm sure that a lot of people probably thought I was a little kid with ADHD on a sugar high, which may not be that far from the truth, because so much was happening. There was titles changes nearly every show, and wrestlers coming and going at breakneck speed, and most of the card for WrestleWar wasn't even announced until the day of the PPV, and I'm sure everyone was looking around at each other going 'who is this guy,' but that was all a part of the process of trying to shape WCW towards the vision I had for it. When it came time to start building towards Superbrawl I most of the pieces were in place, and I was able to start growing the product. Look at the first Saturday Night, we were able to announce already....what was it, three or four of the matches for Superbrawl?”

"That sounds about right."

"That was the way I really wanted, and expected to see, us going. Also it was the first month where I was sort of able to get us into the pattern I wanted to see where each title would be defended at least once, spread out over the whole months worth of shows to really give fans something to watch for."

“When I personally look back on some of the innovations you brought into WCW, I'd say the key was that you were always trying to find ways to get the fans hooked into the product, through the title defenses, through the various types of wrestling you tried to have spread throughout the show, but also through some of the contests you ran for the fans.”

“Listen, I came in realizing that there was no way we were going to rebuild Rome over night, but if I ever wanted to challenge for #1 in our sport, we needed to get the fans involved. We needed to make sure they loved what they were doing, that they felt a part of WCW. I think my favorite contests were when we let them play along at home by predicting the winners of matches, and the highest scorer got to come up with the PPV names we would use....“

Saturday Night Pick ‘Em Contest(And yes, you heard the man, the winner of the first Prediction contest that will end with the March PPV will get to pick the name for the April PPV, so start thinking now):

1991 Year in Review: Part I:The Big Five

Even with the big change up with the birth of World Championship Wrestling it should come as no surprise that the World Wrestling Federation remains on top of the wrestling world to start 1991. Fans of the WWF witnessed a few surprises this month as Randy Savage helped Earthquake upset the Ultimate Warrior to become the NEW WWF Champion. In other surprising news, the Hart Foundation was defeated for the WWF Tag Team titles by a reincarnated version of the Can-Am Connection as Jim Duggan decided to team up with the Canadian Rick Martel and it was instant success for them. Finally, it seemed the WWF caved to pressure as they ended the turncoat storyline with Sgt Slaughter and he is once again an American Patriot, and feuding with Mr Perfect who is no longer the WWF Intercontinental Champion after losing it to Jimmy 'Superfly' Snuka at the Royal Rumble. Of course the real big news in January is who won the Royal Rumble? That honor would go to the 'Million Dollar Man' Ted DiBiase who managed to prevent Hulk Hogan from winning it in back to back years, while also putting on the best match of the evening.

The number two promotion, New Japan Pro Wrestling, had the month off from touring but that didn't keep them from being busy as they went on a signing spree. In one month they signed Tarzan Goto, Mr. Pogo, Koji Kitao, Yoshiaki Yatsu, Naoki Sano, Yoshihiro Takayama, George Takano, Kendo Nagasaki, Hiromichi Fuyuki, Kazuo Yamazaki, Ryuma Go, Goro Tsurumi, Ultra Seven, Umanosuke Ueda, The Great Kabuki, Masanobu Kurisu, Don Arakawa, and the Great Kojika. They were also involved in a bidding war with the new WCW over two contracts; losing out as Vader decided he wanted to stay in American for the most part and signed a written contract with WCW, but winning the battle for Nick Bockwinkel. In other news they signed a new PPV agreement with the Public Broadcasting system in Japan to make sure they could air their PPV events throughout all of Japan.

Coming in at third place was the newly created World Championship Wrestling which of course had a very eventful month as they strove to create their new identity. Wrestlers they signed included Ricky Steamboat, Dustin and Dusty Rhodes, Harley Race, Bruno Sammartino, Terry Funk, Steve Austin, Scott Hall, and Bob Armstrong. As mentioned they signed a written contract to bring Vader, Stan Hansen, and Dan Spivey to the United States full time. In order to make way for the new faces there was also a bit of a cutting spree as Tony Schiavone, Buddy Landel, Tommy Rich, Pez Whatley, Jimmy Garvin, and Michael Hayes were all given their walking papers. The big news saw the placement of Mark Cuban as President of World Championship Wrestling and in charge of the creative process. Changes he saw implemented right away would see several title changes, but also the creation of monthly PPVs which Vince McMahon had to quickly follow up with. The first such PPV was WrestleWar which would see the Four Horsemen triumph over the team of Sting, Lex Luger and the Steiner Brothers.

All Japan Pro Wrestling went through a major change as well as Mitsuharu Misawa was given the book, and started to bring in some wrestlers of his own to shape his vision of AJPW. He signed Fritz Von Erich, Ted Tanabe, Gran Hamada, and Yoshihiro Asai. Furthermore he set up a match between Jumbo Tsuruta and Abdulla the Butch, which Tsuruta won to become the Triple Crown Champion for the third time and ending the vacancy created when Stan Hansen decided to stay in the States, creating a bit of friction between WCW and All Japan Pro Wrestling. Mighty Inoue began his second reign as AJPW World Jr Heavyweight Champion when he ended the year long reign of Masanobu Fuchi. The tag team of Terry Gordy and Steve Williams was replaced with a tag team of Steve Williams and Akira Taue and they became the AJPW Unified World Tag Team Champions. The best match of the month would see Jumbo Tsuruta defeated Steve Williams to defend the AJPW Triple Crown Championship.

Things were changing in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre as El Canek became head booker of CMLL and signed Martha Villalobos, Lola Gonzalez, Rossy Moreno, Chavo Guerrero, El ****, Jose Lothario, Akira Hokuto, and Irma Aguilar. The new booker also decided that he wanted to create new Championships and in a month Mascara Sagrada won the CMLL Arena Championship; La Diabolica became the CMLL Women's World Champion; Silver King became the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion; Ringo Mendoza became the CMLL World Middleweight Champion; Cien Caras and Jerry Estrada became the CMLL World Tag Team Champions; Lizmark, Negro Casas and the double dipping Mascara Sagrada became CMLL World Trios Champions; and Villano III became the CMLL World Welterweight Champion. With the existing titles, Dr Wagner Jr defeated Fuerza Guerrera to become NWA World Welterweight Champion for the first time. A trade between CMLL and WCW saw Konnan appearing for WCW, while Sting came to CMLL and he took part in the best match of the month as he teamed with Dos Caras to defeat Pierroth Jr and Satanico on an episode of CMLL Super Viernes.

Other Industry News:

In response to being fired by Ted Turner, Jim Herd and Ole Anderson teamed together to create a new wrestling promotion that will serve as the primary outlet of the National Wrestling Alliance. They ran run show this month which saw Junkyard Dog claim the vacant NWA World Heavyweight Title, the mammoth team of King Kong Bundy and Bam Bam Bigelow claim the vacant NWA World Tag Team titles, Tito Santana claim the vacant NWA United States Title (while still competing for WWF), and Buddy Rose win the vacant NWA Television Championship. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future, and how their feud with World Championship Wrestling will effect the industry as a whole.

This is a really well done diary.

I have been silently lurking around the forums here since TEW 2005, and have seen many people come and go, but you have been here seemingly forever, and with that long winded little spiel...I just wanted to say that I appreciate that a lot!

One other thing, I just finished writing up the show and will be posting it tomorrow so if anyone else wants to get their predictions in, now is the time to do it.

WCW Saturday Night 02/02/1991

Right after the entrance video for WCW Saturday Night played we saw Sting standing backstage with Missy Hyatt:

“Sting I asked to be the one to interview you tonight because I wanted to thank you for what you did to try and help out Junkyard Dog last week at WrestleWar.”

“You’re welcome Missy, I’m disappointed that my good friend the JYD decided after his beat down that WCW wasn’t for him anymore. There is nothing worse than when bullies get their way, and that is all Vader and Paul E are, and I promise you they are going to get what they have coming for them. When you mess with my friends, you are just asking for a fight with the Stinger! That’s exactly why I asked Jesse Ventura for a match against Bobby Eaton tonight, because he played a role in taking out my friend Lex Luger and tonight he is going to pay, and then after that, Vader….you’re going to pay! And don’t worry, I’ll have plenty left over to get Paul E back for all the wrong he has done this company!”

Match: Big Josh vs. Terrence Taylor

Referee: Dick Woehrle

Road Agent:Jody Hamilton

Outcome: Terrence Taylor defeated Big Josh with a Sunset Flip at 8:11 after Michael Wallstreet was able to distract Terrence Taylor

My Notes: Every time that Big Josh seemed to get the upper hand in this match, Terrence Taylor would roll outside to consult with Michael Wallstreet and Alexandra York, and it was that outside group that turned the tides when Michael Wallstreet distracted Big Josh one too many times and Terrence Taylor was able to get the Sunset Flip surprise victory

Backstage Magnum T.A stood with Diamond Dallas Page, “The Diamond Studd” Scott Hall and the former Master Blaster Steel who was not wearing his trademark face paint, and the orange dye was now gone from his hair that was starting to grow back in:

“I am here with Diamond Dallas Page, “The Diamond Studd” Scott Hall, and….”

“For the future jack, you can just call us the Diamond Exchange, and these are my protégés “The Diamond Studd” Scott Hall and “4C” Kevin Nash, and together there is no force that can stop us from dominating WCW!”

“And Skycrapers that includes you, you do not want to mess with me, and you certainly do NOT want to mess with my BIG friend!”

With that the three men walked away, but not before Kevin Nash glared into the camera, conveying his threat without saying a word.

Match: WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Dynamite Kid© vs. Konnan

Referee: David Manning

Road Agent: Bruno Sammartino

Road Agent Observations: Bruno thought that Konnan looked a little off his game tonight

Outcome: Dynamite Kid defeated Konnan at 7:49 with a Tombstone Piledriver

My Notes: Brian Pillman came out before the match to join Jim Ross and Dusty Rhodes on the commentary table where he put over how important Dynamite Kid was for him even being able to become a wrestler. Unlike their previous match where Dynamite Kid seemed a bit tentative, he came out a house of fire in this match. That almost backfired on him when Konnan was able to catch him with a Drop Tole Hold that was turned into the Tequila Sunrise. Dynamite Kid made it the to the ropes to break the hold, and then caught Konnan with a hard European Uppercut and then dropped him with the Piledriver for the victory

Eric Bischoff had managed to find Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat and Dustin Rhodes to discuss Stan Hansen and Terry Funk with them:

“First off Ricky, welcome to WCW, I can tell you we all feel like it is a privilege and honor to have you wrestling in our rings.”

“Thank you Eric, it is nice that some people still know what respect is, because it is clear that those….Texas Outlaws seem to have no idea what that word means. Dusty Rhodes has been my friend for almost twenty years, and when they decided they wanted to pick a fight with him, even though they know he trying to settle down and not wrestle so much, well that raised my ire. When Dustin called me up and asked me if I would stand by his side and defend his father’s honor, it took me almost no time at all to accept his offer. And WrestleWar was just the beginning, if they want to continue to bad talk the Rhodes, then me and Dustin will make sure they pay!”

"Terry you may have attacked me from behind, but Stan it was you and your big mouth that started this war, and I want the opportunity to shut it once and for all, so I want to do it at Superbrawl!"

With that Ricky Steamboat gave Dustin a supportive pat on the shoulder and the two walked off together.

"Back to you Jim and Dusty."

Match: Brad Armstrong vs. Vader

Referee: Dick Woehrle

Road Agent:Grizzly Smith

Outcome: Vader defeated Brad Armstrong by pin fall at 7:51

My Notes: Vader had the advantage for most of the match, until Brad Armstrong caught Vader by surprise with a Standing Dropkick. He followed that up by a couple more that had Vader fazed, and a bit unsteady on his feet. Amstrong quickly ascended to the top rope, but Vader caught him coming off the top rope with a hard shot to the fist. With Armstrong out on his back, Vader bounced off the ropes and dropped onto Armstrong with a Splash and managed to get the pin fall

Missy Hyatt was backstage once more, but this time with the other half of the Main Event, Bobby Eaton:

“Bobby, Sting has challenged you tonight because of what you did to his friend Lex Luger, knowing that he is pretty upset with you, how do you feel about having to face him?”

“Missy, everyone is counting me out because I’m not a former World Champion, but maybe they are underestimating me….and maybe I’ll have my own World Champion equalizer to back me up tonight?”

“What does that mean?”

“I guess you’re just going to have to watch and find out, that’s all I’m going to say for now.”

Match: #1 Contendership to the WCW Tag Team Championship: The Skyscrapers vs. Tully Blanchard/Barry Windham

Referee: Mickey Jay

Road Agent: Bruno Sammartino

Outcome: Barry Windham defeated Dan Spivey with a Flying Lariat at 13:27 to win the right to face the Steiner Brothers for the WCW World Tag Team Championship at WCW Superbrawl

My Notes: Dan Spivey and Sid Vicious used their size, but the fact that they didn’t have the tag experience that Tully and Barry had soon turned in their favour, and Tully managed to distract Sid on the outside long enough for Barry Windham to hit Spivey with the Flying Lariat for the victory

Larry Zbyszko was out to offer up his ‘Living Legend’ Challenge and this time was greeted by one half of the Young Pistols in Tracy Smothers

Match:Larry Zbyszko vs. Tracy Smothers

Referee: Mark Curtis

Road Agent: Harley Race

Outcome: Larry Zbyszko won with the Larry Land Dreamer at 8:14

My Notes: The two men put on a good, fast paced match up, but in the end Tracy Smothers was not able to break out from the Larry Land Dreamer and fell victim to the ‘Living Legend’ Challenge

After the commercial break we were taken to ringside to listen to a message from Jim Ross:

“The following video shows what happened when we tried to get a word with Ron Simmons about his former tag partner, Butch Reed when he arrived at the arena today. We wanted to take a moment to warn you that the video is a bit graphic, and may not be appropriate for our younger audience.”

There was a momentary break, and then a video played showing Ron Simmons arriving. He got out of his car and a cameraman approached him, but before Ron could say much he was suddenly ambushed by Butch Reed who attacked him with a two by four. After a few shots he had Ron down on his knees, before breaking the board of wood over his back to put him down on his stomach. Flipping him over, Butch Reed used the broken wood and started to stab Ron Simmons in the eye with it. Quickly security was on Butch Reed and pulling him off, but as the video ended Ron Simmons had rolled over onto his stomach and was protecting his eye while yelling in pain.

Match: WCW World Television Championship: Michael Wallstreet© vs. Steve Armstrong

Referee: Randy Anderson

Road Agent: Bruno Sammartino

Road Agent Observations:Bruno noted that Steve did not appear to be on his game tonight

Outcome: Michael Wallstreet defeated Steve Armstrong with his feet on the ropes at 8:07

My Notes: Terrence Taylor distracted Armstrong at the beginning of the match, which allowed Michael Wallstreet to attack from behind, and he didn’t give up until he had managed to win the match and defend his TV title for a second time

My Grade: D

Match: Bobby Eaton vs. Sting

Referee: Nick Patrick

Road Agent: Harley Race

Outcome: Sting defeated Bobby Eaton with the Scorpion Death Lock at 18:25

My Notes: These two put on a really good match that went back and forth with both men having moments where they were on top of things. Each time that Sting would get the better of Bobby Eaton, he would exit the ring and look towards the back like he was expecting something. The ending of the match saw Eaton miss the Alabama Jam, and Sting locked on the Scorpion Death Lock. While Sting had the move locked on, Eaton tried to get to the ropes, while desperately reaching towards the backstage area, but there was nothing forthcoming, and soon he had no choice but to tap out to Sting’s famed submission hold.

Sting’s celebration with the fans was ruined by a voice calling out from him, and as the music slowly died they could see it was Paul E Dangerously who was leading Vader out from the back:

“Sting you think that you are going to be the one who is going to stop the monster Vader? You really think you have it in you to put down this unstoppable creature….well if you are really that crazy, we accept your challenge for a match!”

In the ring Sting was gesturing for Vader to walk down, and Vader started to head towards the ring, but then Paul E Dangerously grabbed him and stopped him.

“Oh no, no, no…not tonight….we’ll see you at Superbrawl where there is money to be made, we thank you very much!”

The final commercial break of the evening was taken, and when Saturday Night returned the WCW World Heavyweight and US Heavyweight Champions were standing in the ring dressed in their finest with Flair already talking down to the fans:

“….and ask your momma all about Space Mountain……WOOOOOOOO! Enough of that, me and Double A didn’t come out here to talk to you, we came out because the Horsemen have a little celebrating we wanted to do after all the victories we have had in the last month. All of you thought that the Nature Boy was backed into a corner when Jesse Ventura decided to make me defend my title against Sting without any Horsemen around…but I made him TAP out! Last week Lex Luger thought he was going to make quick work of the Enforcer, but now who has the gold?”

Here Ric Flair gave Arn Anderson a pat on the US belt, and passed the microphone over.

“Thank you Ric, it has been great, but how about that War Games match? We told the whole world that it was Sting’s team that was getting the short end of the stick when they were put in a War Games match with us, but everyone thought that was just hubris, but it wasn’t hubris that had Lex Luger tapping like his leg was about to break off! You really are the man Ric!”

Ric Flair did his trademark strut here before letting off another Woooooooo to the fans.

“And finally we have Tully and Barry defeating Dan Spivey and that fool Sid to get a shot at the WCW Tag Team titles, and soon those belts will be right where they belong, back home with the Horsemen, and we’ll have ALL the gold!”

“That’s right, Tully and Barry might be out celebrating right now, but we are still weeks away from the match that matters when the gold is on the line. How did you say it Arn? Diamonds are forever, and so are the Four Horsemen? And just as appropriately, the Horsemen are always , ALWAYS, golden….WOOOOOOOO!”

“Speaking of gold, I love my United States belt, and your World title looks really good on you, but wouldn’t it look really good if maybe had ourselves a little bit more gold. The way I see it we defeated the Steiner Brothers in War Games last week, maybe we deserve a Tag Team title shot….how about next week? What do you say Steiners?”

Instead of the Tag Team Champions coming out, it was instead the WCW Commissioner Jesse Ventura who had walked out from the back.

“I was listening to the two of you in the back and you made some valid points that I would like to address. You both have the gold, which means that right now you two are the best in this company, and you did defeat the Steiner Brothers last week at WrestleWar so I am even willing to get your that shoat the Tag Team title gold next week so that you have the opportunity to prove to these fans just how good the both of you are! But that is not why I am out here, instead I am here to talk about our next PPV that is coming up in about three weeks from now, that being Superbrawl and the fact that we need to have a World title Main Event. I am out here tonight to announce that the challenge for the world title be…..”The Total Package” Lex Luger!”

Ric Flair and Arn Anderson looked at each other incredulously before Flair managed to get out a ‘Lex doesn’t deserve anything’ but Ventura cut him off quickly.

“In case you forgot, being the US Champion means that you automatically are entitled to have a shot at the World Champion as the de factor #1 Contender to the World title, and since Lex was never granted that title shot while he held the US Championship, I have no choice but to make sure he gets that shot now, and he is going to get it at Superbrawl. As you are also aware there is a clause in the contract of every WCW title holder that states the title must be defended at least once every 30 days or be stripped, and as I know that you are a Champion who needs to prove his worth I have decided to add an extra stipulation to that match you were requesting next week. You and Arn have ever reason to want to win the match, but I want to give the Steiner’s a little extra incentive, and that incentive is if either of them is to win the match they will face you Ric at the following Saturday Night with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on the line. Now I know what you’re thinking, with this big title match on the line, what happens if say…you or Arn ‘accidentally’ get disqualified or counted out? Quite simple…in that case you will defend your title against BOTH Steiner Brothers!”

Now Ric Flair was really starting to go red in the face and he was ripping off his jacket and his tie while Arn Anderson was trying to calm him down.

“Oh and one final thing before we go off the air, if you and Arn are able to win the Tag Team titles next week…then the following Saturday you will be defending the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against….’The Enforcer’ Arn Anderson! “
