1990 Year in Review: Part XXII:NWA

While Sgt Slaughter was busy transforming into a turncoat and setting up to face The Ultimate Warrior, MAJOR transformations were beginning to take effect in the NWA. Behind the scenes, it became known in December that Ted Turner had acquired a new minority partner in his organization and he was setting his sights on even bigger things in 1991. No one quite knew what that meant for the President of WCW, Jim Herd or the head booker Ole Anderson, but there was a definite pall hanging over Starrcade when it took place on December 16th.

1 Bobby Eaton def. The Z-Man

2 The Steiner Brothers (USA) def. Sgt. Krueger and Col. DeKlerk (South Africa) Pat O'Connor Tournament Quarterfinal

3 Konnan and Rey Misterio (Mexico) defeated Chris Adams and Norman Smiley (United Kingdom) Pat O'Connor Tournament Quarterfinal

4 Mr. Saito and The Great Muta (Japan) defeated The Royal Family (Rip Morgan and Jack Victory) (New Zealand) Pat O'Connor Tournament Quarterfinal

5 Victor Zangiev and Salman Hashimikov (Soviet Union) defeated Troy Montour and Danny Johnson (Canada) Pat O'Connor Tournament Quarterfinal

6 Michael Wallstreet (with Alexandra York) defeated Terry Taylor

7 The Skyscrapers (Sid Vicious and Danny Spivey) defeated Big Cat and The Motor City Madman

8 Tommy Rich and Ricky Morton (with Robert Gibson) defeated The Fabulous Freebirds (Jimmy Garvin and Michael Hayes) (with Little Richard Marley)

9 The Steiner Brothers (USA) defeated Konan and Rey Misterio (Mexico) Pat O'Connor Tournament Semifinal

10 Mr. Saito and The Great Muta (Japan) defeated Victor Zangiev and Salman Hashimikov (Soviet Union) Pat O'Connor Tournament Semifinal

11 Lex Luger defeated Stan Hansen © Texas Lariat match for the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship

12 Doom (Ron Simmons and Butch Reed) © (with Teddy Long) and Arn Anderson and Barry Windham fought to a no-contest Street Fight for the NWA World Tag Team Championship

13 The Steiner Brothers (USA) defeated Mr. Saito and The Great Muta (Japan) Pat O'Connor Tournament Final

14 Sting © defeated The Black Scorpion in a Steel Cage match for the NWA World Championship

The major impact to come out of the PPV of course was the revealing of Ric Flair as The Black Scorpion, restarting one of the NWA's greatest feuds. Also notable was the reuniting of The Skyscrapers, which seemed to be a one night thing, but as the team continued to team together over the following weeks worth of shows it quickly became apparent it may be a more permanent situation. All of this was pretty minor though, considering that this would turn out to be the final Starrcade in NWA history. What seemed most important on the heels of Starrcade was the almost immediate firing of Ole Anderson, who was blamed for the majority of what has become to be known as "The Black Scorpion" fiasco. Everyone thought that was going to be the end of changes...and then Jim Herd was fired, and everything went crazy from there.....

OOC: First off a thank you to justtxyank for the mod used for this, albeit with a few tweaks here and there. Some of you may remember I started a 2001 dynasty, but after seeing the great job falling_star was doing I wanted to do something different, and so here we are. Go check out his dynasty though, it is pretty great!

Note: On January 1rst, 1991 World Championship Wrestling ended its association with the National Wrestling Alliance, and all titles and their histories were returned to the NWA. At that time the holders of the NWA World Heavyweight, US, World Tag Team, and TV Championships were named the WCW Champions of the same division. Histories for WCW titles begin there, although the date of the NWA title change was included for historical purposes. Also all dates are the dates the match was aired in the United States.

NWA House House Results: Held at the Omni in Atlanta, Georgia on December 25th, 1990

NWA Tag Team Champions Doom defeated Arn Anderson & Barry Windham in a steel cage match when Reed pinned Windham

Brian Pillman & Tom Zenk defeated Michael Hayes & Jimmy Garvin when Zenk pinned Garvin

Michael Wallstreet pinned Tim Horner

NWA US Tag Team Champions Rick & Scott Steiner defeated the Master Blasters

The Junkyard Dog pinned the Iron Sheik

WCW US Champion Lex Luger & El Gigante defeated the Big Cat & the Motor City Madman

FOR THE NWA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP:

...Ric Flair had managed to inflict a lot of damage to the leg of Sting, and now had the World Champion locked into the Figure Four right in the middle of the ring. With the fans loudly cheering him on, Sting managed to fight the pain, and managed to reverse the move on the ‘Nature Boy.’ Quickly Flair broke the hold, and both climbed to their feet. Thinking Sting had to be easy pickings now; Flair turned him around and started to chop away at his chest. That seemed to motivate the Champ further, and he went for his trademark bicep pose, which sent Ric into hysterics. Now it was Sting who was punching away at the challenge, and he sent him flying into the turnbuckle with an Irish Whip. Backing up into the opposite corner, Sting ran across the ring and dropped onto the ‘Nature Boy’ with a Stinger Splash. Sting stumbled out of the corner a bit with the sore leg, but still attempted to hit another Stinger Splash, but Flair managed to reposition himself….and the referee who instead took the blunt of the blow. With the referee down, Flair probably thought he was going to have the advantage, but instead Sting quickly dropped him to the mat with a HUUUUGE Back Body Drop. Next Sting locked in the Scorpion Death Lock, and Flair was quickly tapping, but there was no referee. Suddenly the fans in the Omni started to become restless as someone ran in from the crowd…..someone who was dressed up like the Black Scorpion! He grabbed the NWA World Championship, and slid into the ring, and a shocked String broke the submission hold and stopped the Scorpion as he entered the ring with punches. This lasted until Ric Flair dropped Sting with a low blow from behind!

Down went the Champion, and the Black Scorpion managed to get his mask straightened and then grabbed the NWA world title once more. While Flair went over to try and revive the referee/ensure that he couldn’t see what was happening, the Black Scorpion waited for the Champion to get up before running him over with a title shot to the head. Dropping the belt, the Black Scorpion rolled out of the ring and disappeared underneath of it. Flair pulled the referee over, and quickly pinned Sting. ONE….TWO…THR…..NO STING KICKED OUT! Flairs face went beat red as he went apoplectic, but there was no doubting that the Champion had kicked out before the three count. Instead of letting his anger get the best of him, Flair pulled Sting to the middle of the ring and slapped on the Figure Four one more time. The Champion was clearly reeling, but once more the fans got behind him and it almost seemed like he was going to be able to break out of the hold once more. But slowly he faded, and the referee counted his shoulders as they were laying on the mat. After a couple of close two counts, Sting finally couldn’t gather the strength to fight the pain any longer, and he passed out right in the middle of the ring. A quick three count later, and Ric Flair was once more World Champion!! Quickly Arn Anderson and Barry Windham ran out of to celebrate with the Champion. As they were celebrating, the Black Scorpion rolled back into the ring. After some cajoling from the Horsemen, the Black Scorpion slowly ripped of his mask to reveal…..

NWA World Championship Wrestling Results December 29th, 1990

The show was a recap of the major events in 1990 with a couple of matches added in. One of those matches included the reunited Skyscrapers defeating the Master Blasters, and The Z-Man defeating Arn Anderson to win the NWA TV Championship. Also thrown in was a brief video showing what happened on Christmas Day with Ric Flair defeating Sting to become the new NWA World Champion.

Before the show ended, a prerecorded video played featuring Ted Turner:

"I would like to start this address off by wishing Happy Holidays to all of the fans of our company. Just like many of you have been spending time looking through the past, and preparing the future, so do I have been thinking about the future. I am very proud of the history of this company I own, but the time has come for some changes. What you have witnessed tonight was the end of the long run of NWA World Championship Wrestling. Beginning next week in this time slot you will instead be seeing World Championship Wrestling Saturday Night. It is time for us to grow from being a national 'rasslin' program into a worldwide wrestling promotion. You are going to see many changes over the next few weeks we our organization is retooled for our exciting future. First off I would like to announce that all NWA titles will be returned to National Wrestling Alliance, with our gratitude for all they have meant for us through the years. All current Champions will be instated as the first WCW Champions, with new title histories beginning with them. In addition, WCW will be adding a new division, and a new Championship to go with it in the Cruiserweight division, which you will be hearing more about next week on Saturday Night. I would also like to announce that with the input of some of my closest advisers, including the new WCW Executive Vice President, we have decided to create the position of a WCW Commissioner who will be in charge of everything you are going to see on Saturday Nights. We searched the world to find just the right person for this role as authority figure, and I think everyone will be pleased when it is announced next week. His first job will be overseeing the signing of a contract that will match new WCW World Heavyweight Champion up against Sting in a contractually obligated rematch for the World Heavyweight Championship the following week. Finally I would like to announce that our Main Event will see the WCW World Tag Team Championships being defended as Doom will face....THE STEINER BROTHERS! Again, thank you for all of your support in the past, and I hope you join us on our journey into the future!"

And so it begins....

20 Years of World Championship Wrestling: DVD/Blu Ray:

<a href="

“Hello everyone, and welcome to this special presentation looking back on twenty years of World Championship Wrestling. In addition to matches handpicked by a special panel that highlight what we think are the best moments and matches in our history, we have spoken to a few of the players who made it such a success. But for me, the personal highlight is this interview with the man who was the Executive Vice President of WCW since it began twenty years ago. Of course he is world famous and some of his out of the ring pursuits include the creation of MicroSolutions, Broadcast.com, and of course is the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. It is my pleasure to be here with Mark Cuban.”

“Oh Jim, that was very nice, I will do my best to try and not embarrass you by making an ass of myself.”

“While I’m not sure either of those are possible, before we get started talking a little about you, I just wanted to quickly talk to you about some of the information that is going to be available first on this DVD/Blu Ray presentation, but also about the commemorative book that is going to be available at the same time.”

“Hahaha, well as you mentioned, yes we do have a book that is going to be coming out that is going to be looking at the twenty year history of WCW. Which I guess brings us to an important point that we should make before someone else does it on our behalf, namely that this DVD and the book are to celebrate the twenty years that World Championship Wrestling had existed as a separate entity from the NWA, in no way are we trying to erase the history of our forerunner promotions. Obviously a lot of great history exists, things like the Flair-Steamboat trilogy, Dusty Rhodes and Harley Race competing over the World title, the beginnings of the Four Horsemen…”

“The I Quit Steel Cage match between Magnum and Tully…”

“Oh yeah, that was a great match….but as a company we wish to celebrate what we have done outside of the NWA. When we left the NWA in 1991, we were setting out to become a world-wide entity onto our hold. We were taking chances, we were innovating, and yes at times we were even failing. But that is the history of WCW, and we want to take this time to celebrate it. Of course I can’t take all of the credit for what has happened, we obviously wouldn’t be here without Ted Turner, but in helping prepare the book I gave access to my notes for the writers to look at. I have almost a ‘diary’ you can say of everything I have done in this company. From contracts I signed, to business negotiations I made, all of that is in writing, and organized by month and year in binders in my house. Furthermore I have the details from every single wrestling card I was ever a part of, with notes on every match, from how long it was, to who was the referee to notes on what happened in the match that I thought was of some importance. Some of those notes are copied verbatim and will be included in the book for others to see, whereas some of them will just be used to help pain the stories that will be told in the book. At least now though, everyone will know where the information is coming from, which should help provide people with proof of its veracity.”

“Okay then, so why don’t we get started by talking about you….”

“Always a favourite thing for me to do!”

“…and why don’t we get this started by discussing how you got involved in wrestling?”

“Well I guess my story starts just like many other wrestling fans. When I was a young boy growing up in Pittsburgh a friend took me to go and see the old WWWF and I witnessed Bruno Sammartino defending his title belt and I was hooked big time! When I moved to Dallas I went to see a couple of World Class Championship Wrestling shows, and it was something completely differently, and I had something new to love and enjoy. Unfortunately I had a run in with some of the wrestlers at the bar I was working at, and it didn’t go really well. Let’s just say that they felt they could act as ‘free’ as a ‘bird’ in my bar, and that just wasn’t about to happen. So after that I was staying away from wrestling, until I was down in San Antonio and a friend took me to go and see a Southwest Championship Wrestling show. I enjoyed what I got to see there, but more importantly, but afterwards we ran into some of the boys. It was there that I began what would become a long lasting relationship with Tully Blanchard. Later on when the Four Horsemen were going strong and they would come near Dallas I would get together with them. From there I became friends with the Horsemen, and it would just grow from there.”

“And was it that connection that got you involved with WCW?”

“Well almost from the time that Ted bought Crockett Promotions, he was already trying to figure out ways to make it bigger and better. He really wanted to compete with the WWF, he wanted to beat Vince period, and he knew that the key to do that was he needed to take the product to a larger, worldwide audience. When I used to hang out with the Horsemen in the back I actually got to meet Ted Turner once, although he really didn't have much to say to me at that time. Later on when he was looking at expanding, he wanted to try and find someone who could share his passion; who could think outside the box, and lets not kid ourselves here, someone who could share some of the financial burden. At that time Jim Herd was in charge here…”

“Now there’s someone who was a real ass…”

“….hey, JR, I’m the one who is supposed to be using the salty language here, not you.”

“Sorry, I just could not stand that guy!”

“That was pretty much the consensus opinion backstage from what I was able to gather. When I first joined the company, as you remember I spent some time backstage without really letting anyone know what I was doing. I only ran into him twice, and both times he brushed me off like I was nobody at all, it was hard not to laugh since I knew that I was going to be firing his ass as soon as possible. But anyways, Ted wanted someone to partner with him, because he knew there was a potential that there could be a bit of a backlash when he seceded from the NWA from fans who might think that we were going to change too much from the product they loved. Who can forget what happened on Black Saturday? So Ted needed someone who could make the transition in a way that the fans would find acceptable. This was something that was sort of well-known in the dressing room, and one of my boys happened to mention my name to his people, and they set up a formal business meeting between the two of us, as I really had nothing better going on at that time having just sold MicoSolutions to CompuServe.”

“I can just imagine how that went….”

“Yeah, as you can imagine he took one look at me, just like most people did at that time and sort of brushed me off as a brash, foul talking youngster. Until I mentioned MicroSolutions and then his whole demeanour seemed to change. He told me of his plans for the future, and we quickly formalized a deal where I bought into WCW and became a partner in his plans for the future. “

“Which is really where you have been ever since, and I’d say that is probably the question I get the most about you, so maybe you can touch on that for the fans. How is it you have managed to stay involved with WCW, even with all of your other activities?”

“Well as you know Jim, Ted has always had a bit of a hands off approach when it comes to the daily running of his wrestling companies, leaving that to the Executive Vice President of WCW, and whomever the Head of Creative was at that time. With his big plans for the future, Ted wanted to try and tighten the reigns a bit, by making sure that there was one person in charge of both of those roles, and it would be someone who would best represent his interests. Following Starrcade 1990, and the whole fiasco with the ‘Black Scorpion,’ Ted wasted no time in relieving Ole Anderson of his job as head of creative. That of course made Jim Herd think he was safe, but when plans were finalized to formalize the creation of World Championship Wrestling, Herd was finally given the boot and I was placed into both positions. Taking my cue from Ted, I wanted to create a committee that would be able to handle a lot of the creative things, while following the lead that both Ted and I wanted. Of course you know was you were one of the men on that Booking Committee, as were guys like Paul Heyman, Gordon Solie, Dusty Rhodes when he joined WCW officially in early 1991. None of you agreed all the time, but I liked that everyone brought different ideas to the table. And then of course we were always willing to listen to ideas from outside the Committee, for example when Eric Bischoff first brought the idea of a Cruiserweight division to the company, for which I am of course quite grateful for. Honestly if it wasn’t for you guys though, I’m not sure we would have been able to be as successful as we have been. Having you guys taking care of a lot of the creative stuff, left me free to pursue expanding WCW through different means.”

“Speaking of the Cruiserweight division, it seems appropriate to start by talking about the first episode of WCW Saturday Night in January 1991. It is hard to believe now considering how popular it was, but I remember calling that first episode of Saturday Night when the Cruiserweights entered WCW, and listening to a crowd that had no idea what to think of those guys.”

“Well you’re certainly right there, while there were some names like the Dynamite Kid, and Brian Pillman who the fans did know, it certainly didn’t help having guys like Sabu, and Jerry Lynn out there who many of them had never heard of before, let alone seen.”

“Speaking of Sabu, I still remember that dive he took off the top rope that night, and thinking to myself ‘oh boy, what have we gotten ourselves into.’”

“Yeah, Sabu has always been sort of a nut, but I’m glad, because you’re right that is an image that still stands out to me too. There we were, our first Saturday Night; and yes we were on the road, but in many ways with so many similar faces from the weeks before, I really thought it would be a challenge to signify this was something new, a new era was beginning. But there was a couple things that night, which I think really proved the times were changing. In helping prepare the commemorative book, as you know I went back and looked through my notes, keeping notes on EVERYTHING is something I’d have to say I learnt from my mother, and from the first show on, I have to say we have had a lot of great moments that I am very proud of.”

“Yes, I’d say right from the beginning it was obvious that you had created an atmosphere that was ready to challenge the norm; that you were planting a seed for a promotion that was going to challenge what was considering normal for wrestling.”

OOC: I will be running a predictions contest, with different lengths, and prizes that will be available, but I will be doing it slightly different then what I have traditionally seen. I will not be doing full previews of each show, but will instead pick a few matches from each one and work them in for people to predict on.

WCW Saturday Night 01/05/1991

Location: Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida

Attendance: 8582 (Sell Out)

Rating: 3.07

Jim Ross and Missy Hyatt welcomed everyone to the new WCW Saturday Night when Paul E Dangerously interrupted.

“Well isn’t this just great, here we are with our big debut, and I was told that I wasn’t needed in the booth any longer. And who did the big wigs hire to replace me, a MAN? This….this….lady of the night….err….lady of SATURDAY night that is. This is not something that I’m going to take sitting down, in fact my lawyers are already looking into a discrimination suit. But Missy, between you and me, this is PERSONAL! So I’m making a challenge to you, I want to prove once and for all that a man is better than any woman, any day! I want you to find someone to represent you at WrestleWar, someone who is going to face my representative, and don’t worry I’ll give you a couple weeks to find someone. It shouldn’t be too hard to find someone who owes you a favor or two in return for a favor you did for them. In fact, because I am a real gentleman, I’m going to give you one more advantage, and I’m going to have my representative in the ring tonight, just so you can get a sneak peek at the man who is going to put yours down! And then maybe, finally, you’ll remember your place!”

Match: Junkyard Dog vs. Tully Blanchard

Referee: Randy Anderson

Road Agent: Grizzly Smith

Outcome: Tully Blanchard def. Junkyard Dog with the Slingshot Suplex at 13:17

My Notes: Barry Windham accompanied Tully Blanchard out for the match, but actually managed to keep out of the action between the two men for the most part. The two veterans had a back and forth affair, that seemed to be on the way to a Junkyard Dog victory after he dropped Tully to the mat with a Scoop Slam and started in with his trademark Headbutts. It was at this point that Barry did get involved, distracting the referee to allow Tully to recover and nail the JYD with a foreign object he pulled out of his trunks. Randy Anderson turned around, but the Dog kicked out at two. Puressing his advantage, the Horseman picked the Junkyard Dog up and nailed him with his Slingshot Suplex for the victory.

“Hello everyone, my name is Eric Bischoff and I am here with Michael Wallstreet and Alexandra York of the York Foundation, and I understand they have an announcement and a challenge to make?”

“There you are correct, me and Miss York would like to announce that the York Foundation have merged with Big Cat industries, and Mr Hughes will be joining the York Foundation as Head of Security. Now in regards to the challenge, I’m calling you out Terry Taylor, because we are done with having you as a thorn in our side. So I’m challenging you to a 1 on 1, ‘Loser Leaves WCW’ match, next week here on Saturday Night. What do you have to say Miss York?”

“According to the computer, IF, he is brave enough to beat you, there is 99.9% chance that Terry Taylor will no longer be working with the company after your match!”

Match: Stan Hansen vs. Ranger Ross

Referee: David Manning

Road Agent: Bob Armstrong

Road Agent Observations: Bob didn`t think that Stan Hansen was on top of his game tonight.

Outcome: Stan Hansen def. Ranger Ross with the Lariat at 8:14

My Notes: Stan Hansen seemed to be even more irritated then usual as he pummeled Ranger Ross from post to post, before finally finishing him off with the Lariat. Post-match, Stan Hanse grabbed his bull rope and knocked Ranger Ross out with a hard shot with his cowbell.

“Ladies and gentlemen, everyone knows that the US title meant a lot in my career, and that is why it brings me great pleasure to introduce to you the FIRST World Championship Wrestling United States Heavyweight Champion….LEX LUGER!”

“Thank you Magnum, it is because of legends like you that holding this belt means so much to me. I know it may be a new company, but one thing that has not changed is the ‘Total Package’ is going to make sure that this belt remains the stepping stone to greatness. Holding this belt means you have the ability to challenge for the World Championship at least once while you are Champion, that’s how important it is. Next week my buddy Sting is going to be getting his title back, but if for some reason he isn’t able to get past Ric Flair….well Slick Rick, guess who is going to be coming for you next!”

Match: The Skyscrapers vs. The Fabulous Freebirds

Referee: Dick Woehrle

Road Agent: Mike Graham

Outcome: Sid Vicious pinned Jimmy Garvin at 8:30 after a Powerbomb.

My Notes: The Skyscrapers managed to use their size to control most of the match, in the end though the Freebirds used a distraction by their manager to double team Sid Vicious. That brought Spivey into the ring, and he quickly sent Michael Hayes flying out of the ring with a clothesline, before picking up Jimmy Garvin and sending him flying into DDP on the ring apron. The cigar from DDP’s mouth jabbed Garvin in the mouth, and he turned around holding his eye in pain, which allowed Sid Vicious to drop him with a Powerbomb and getting the pin. After the match, the “Big Cat” Curtis Hughes lumbered out to attack the two men, and he was joined by Michael Wallstreet. The beat down continued until Terry Taylor came running out from the back, and the York Foundation quickly exited the ring.

Match: WCW Television Championship: Z-Man© vs. Buddy Landel

Referee: Mickey Jay

Road Agent: Pez Whatley

Outcome: Z-Man def. Buddy Landell with the Flying Drop Kick at 7:49

My Notes: The two men had a pretty basic match, with Buddy Landell showing off every time he successfully hit a move. This backfired on him when Z-Man managed to recover enough to catch him with a Flying Drop Kick for the victory.

“Hello everyone, I am here with WCW’s Head of Scouting, Mark Cuban. Mark you have been traversing the world trying to find the hidden gems that you will be getting a look at in the coming months here in WCW, starting with tonight in our preview of the Cruiserweight Tournament that will be beginning next week here on Saturday Night. First off Mark could you please tell us a little bit about the Cruiserweight division?”

“Thank you, the Cruiserweight division is going to be about adding a little flash to the product here in WCW. In searching the world I was able to find some wrestlers who are going to be able to fly with the likes of Brian Pillman and the Dynamite Kid, and really tear it up inside the ring. All of our competitors are going to weigh under 220lbs, so you are going to see them be able to do moves that some of the bigger guys just can’t.”

“You mentioned Brian Pillman and the Dynamite Kid, but what can you tell us about some of the other competitors that we will be seeing shortly?”

“Besides those two, Konnan and Chris Benoit will be familiar to our fans as they got to see them just a few weeks ago at Starrcade. Kid Lightning and Jerry Lynn have had a strong rivalry going on throughout some of the northern states, and we’re hoping that will be able to carry over here to WCW. Over in Japan, the Cruiserweight division is called the Junior Heavyweight division, and probably the very best member of that division is Jushin Liger so I am very excited that he will be debuting in WCW tonight. Finally there is Sabu….and words just don’t do him justice, fans are going to have to wait and see exactly what he is all about.”

“Thank you for your time Mark, and fans, up next you’re going to get a small taste of what WCW has in plan for you in the coming weeks!”

Match: Dynamite Kid/Brian Pillman/Kid Lightning/Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger vs. Sabu/Konnan/Chris Benoit/Jerry Lynn

Referee: David Manning

Road Agent: Bob Armstrong

Outcome: Konnan makes Kid Lightning tap with the Tequilla Sunrise at 6:10 to win for his team

My Notes: This was a quick match, with none of the wrestlers having a lot of time to shine, but everyone got to hit a few impressive moves. The ending saw most of the wrestlers outside, with Sabu in the ring with a steel chair. Setting the chair up, Sabu ran off the ropes, jumped off the chair to balance on the top rope before diving on the wrestlers outside the ring. The fans were in shock, as Kid Lightning rolled back into the ring and it looked like he was going to try for his own move over the ropes. Konnan intercepted him with a Drop Toe Hold that dropped Lightning’s head off the steel chair, and locked in the Tequilla Sunrise to get the submission victory.

“Earlier tonight Michael Wallstreet made a challenge to my guest for a match next week, where the loser would have to leave WCW, Terry Taylor I have to ask, are you willing to accept the challenge?”

“I don’t find myself agreeing with Michael Wallstreet very often, but one thing I do have to agree with him on….I’m tired of this feud, so I will gladly accept his challenge for next week! I look forward to ending this once and for all!”

Match: Big Josh vs. Vader

Referee: Randy Anderson

Road Agent: Jody Hamilton

Outcome: Vader won at 8:05

My Notes: Paul E Dangerously escorted Vader out as his new client, and he wasted no time going to work on Big Josh. Big Josh managed to get a few moves in, but Vader managed to finally beat him into submission with some very stiff looking punches.

Match: WCW World Tag Team Championship: Doom© vs. The Steiner Brothers

Referee: Nick Patrick

Road Agent: Bob Armstrong

Outcome: Rick Steiner def. Butch Reed at 18:52 after a Steinerizer, allowing the Steiner Brothers to become the NEW WCW World Tag Team Champions!

My Notes: These two teams started off with handshakes, before contesting a back and forth match that saw a lot of power moves performed on either side. The end saw all four men in the ring, with Ron Simmons accidentally nailing his own partner with a Clothesline. That allowed the Scott Steiner to take Ron out with a Frankensteiner, and then the Steiners finished off Butch Reed with the Steinerizer. After the match, Teddy Long and Ron Simmons shook the hands of the new Champions, and tried to encourage Butch Reed to do the same, but he instead left the ring and walked away in disgust.

“Ladies and gentlemen….the Commissioner of World Championship Wrestling…..JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA!”

With that introduction Jesse Ventura entered from the back to an ovation from the fans, as he walked to the ring that was set up for a contract signing between Ric Flair and Sting.

“Thank you for that warm welcome, but I don’t want to waste any of your time, so right now I’d like to call out the challenge….the man called Sting!”

The fans gave an even louder reaction to the former Champion of the World as he made his way out with his trademark howl.

“And next, I would like to bring out the World Heavyweight Champion….the ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair!”

What were once cheers, quickly turned to cheers as the leader of the Four Horsemen walked out from the back in his trademark suit and his World Championship belt.

“First off, Ric Flair, I just wanted to let you know how much I respect you for all that you have done in this business. Even when I was working for the company up north, I always knew that you were the greatest wrestler in the world!”

Here Ric Flair was smiling, and shaking his head along with the words that Jesse Ventura was saying.

“What I think is unfair though, is I don’t think that all of the fans know how great you are. They all think you are a coward that you hide behind the Four Horsemen and I just don’t think that is right at all. I want to help you prove to these fans how great you are, and that is why, as part of the contract you are going to sign, I have barred all other wrestlers from being near the ring. It’s going to be just you and Sting, competing to prove just who the greatest wrestler in this company is!”

At this point Ric Flair started to freak out, ripping off his suit jacket and throwing it to the ring floor, loosening up his tie and bouncing off the ring. He kept trying to speak, but the words just wouldn’t come out of his mouth. Finally he threw down the mic, grabbed a pen and signed the contract, before grabbing his title belt and started to leave the ring. At this point Sting picked up the microphone, which stopped Ric from leaving the ring.

“Awww, come on Ric, there is no need to get angry, after all you ARE the man right? There’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to beat me next week without any outside help. Oh wait, I think we both know that you have become so reliant on that outside help, that you’re not even sure you can beat me are you? Look me in the eyes Ric….you know it’s true, you’re worried, and I can admit, that worries me a little bit. You’re backed into a corner Ric, and that’s when animals are the most dangerous; next week is going to be great Ric, finally one of us will be able to walk away with their heads raised high and the Championship around their waist. It’s show time Ric!”

With that Sting bent over to sign the contract, and that is when Ric Flair ran at him with the title belt. Sting tried to defend himself, but Ric Flair was too fast and he bounced the belt right off the head of his challenge. Quickly Flair started to attack Sting’s knee, while Jesse Ventura called to the back for security to come out. Before security could make it, Ric Flair had locked the Figure Four on Sting and the challenger was clearly in agony. Flair grabbed his title belt and left the ring and slowly walked backwards towards the back, yelling into the crowd as the show ended.

“I’m….the man! Wooooooooo!”

Saturday Night opened with a close up of the logo mounted on a wall backstage, and then Vader stepped in front of it, with Paul E Dangerously at his side.

“My name is Paul E Dangerously, and since WCW decided in their infinite wisdom to replace me with a WO-man, I decided to take it upon myself to introduce you to WCW Saturday Night. I would also like to introduce you to my client, and the man who will represent me at WrestleWar, this is VADER! He is the most dominating…the most destructive….the most….DANGEROUS, ha…wrestler in WCW….no, in the WHOLE world! And Missy….we’re waiting for your answer to our challenge, and we will only give you one more week to respond. Come on Missy, who are you going to suck….er into wrestling for you!”

Match: Barry Windham vs. Junkyard Dog

Referee: David Manning

Road Agent: Pez Whatley

Road Agent Observations: Pez Whatley noted this match didn’t work out so well because Junkyard Dog was winded pretty quickly.

Outcome: Barry Windham defeated Junkyard Dog with the Flying Lariat at 10:47.

My Notes: Windham was escorted out by Tully Blanchard, and Junkyard Dog was much more weary of him this time. The match went back and forth, but Dog kept looking over his back at Tully Blanchard. Finally with Windham down, the JYD rolled out of the ring and surprisingly attacked Tully, sending him flying into the ring railing, before dropping him to the mat with a Scoop Slam. Climbing through the ropes, the Dog left himself vulnerable, and Barry Windham kicked the middle rope causing Dog to have some serious discomfort. Following that up with a Flying Lariat, Barry was able to get the victory.

In the locker room, Terry Taylor was seen getting psyched up for his match tonight where his WCW career was on the line. Z-Man entered, and the two men shook hands, before Z-Man offered up some encouraging words.

“One other thing man, we both know that wherever Wallstreet goes he’s going to have back up, and I just wanted to let you know I would have your back tonight!”

Match: WCW World Television Championship: Z-Man© vs. Bobby Eaton

Referee: Nick Patrick

Road Agent:Jody Hamilton

Outcome: Z-Man defeated Bobby Eaton with the Flying Drop Kick at 8:29

My Notes: The veteran Bobby Eaton started the match off the same way he had ended the match at Starrcade, in control. Fortunately for Z-Man, the fans cheering propelled him into making the comeback that ended with a Flying Drop Kick to retain his TV title.

Eric Bischoff was with the challenge for the World Championship, the man called Sting:

“Sting, tonight you are using your contractually obligated rematch clause to get a shot at reclaiming the belt from Ric Flair. Further, thanks to our new Commissioner, you are going to be facing Flair without needing to worry about any interference from the Four Horsemen. We know there is a lot of history between the two of you, how are you feeling before your match?”

“You’re right Eric, there is a lot of history between me and the Nature Boy, but as all the little Stingers know, every time Ric Flair has managed to defeat me he has had help from the Four Horsemen. This time there is going to be no help, no mercy, no back up, and I am going to become the NEW WCW World Heavyweight Champion! It’s SHOWTIME folks!”

Match: Dynamite Kid vs. Sabu

Referee: Randy Anderson

Road Agent: Mike Graham

Road Agent Observations: Mike Graham pointed out that this match was probably too long for who was involved, and also that Dynamite Kid could probably use some additional work on his cardio.

Outcome: Dynamite Kid defeated Sabu with a Power Slam at 8:19

My Notes: Sabu had surprised the fans with his diving move the previous week, and that continued tonight with some top rope assisted high flying moves, including a move he dubbed the Arabian Press. Dynamite Kid wasn’t a stranger to those sort of moves, and he managed to catch Sabu coming off the top rope, and dropped him with a hard Power Slam for the victory.

Gordon Solie was surrounded by the four members of the Horsemen, with Barry Windham still looking a bit worn out from his match against the Junkyard Dog. Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson took a turn talking, before we finished up with the Champ:

“Sting I heard your words, and I can tell you are confident that you are going to be able to beat me, but it’s clear to me you have forgotten that I’m the Champion! This belt is mine, and I am the man! I’m not going to just beat you tonight, I’m going to embarrass you, and then WOOOOOO, I’m going to walk out the Champ, just like I walked in!”

Match: Loser Leaves WCW: Michael Wallstreet vs. Terry Taylor

Referee: Dick Woehrle

Road Agent: Pez Whatley

Outcome: Michael Wallstreet defeated Terry Taylor to end his WCW career by using the ropes at 12:52

My Notes: These two worked a solid match, with both ‘Big Cat’ Curtis Hughes and Z-Man outside to minimize the damage that either men could do. The finish saw Alexandra York attempt to distract the referee so that Hughes could interfere, but that backfired with Z-Man hit both him and Michael Wallstreet with a Flying Dropkick. Sending Hughes out of the ring, Z-Man followed him out under the bottom rope. The two fighting outside, distracted Terry Taylor long enough for Michael Wallstreet to go low. Dick Woehrle had finally got York off the ring apron, and turned around to make the count, but Taylor kicked out. Pulling Taylor up, Wallstreet was surprised by a quick cradle, but reversed and got his feet on the ropes for leverage to win the match. Post match ‘Bit Cat’ had taken Z-Man out, and he entered the ring with a steel chair, that Wallstreet used to smash the knee of Terry Taylor. Before he could inflict any more damage, the Skyscrapers came out to send the York Foundation fleeing.

My Grade: C-

Match: Kid Lightning vs. Konnan

Referee: Mark Curtis

Road Agent:Pez Whatley

Road Agent Observations: Pez Whatley didn’t think that Konnan was at the top of his game.

Outcome: Konnan made Kid Lightning submit using the Tequila Sunrise at 7:56

My Notes: Once more the Cruiserweight division provided some higher flying offense in the form of Kid Lightning, but Konnan was able to use his size advantage to brutalize Kid Lightning to the point where he was able to slip on his submission finisher for the victory.

Backstage Teddy Long was letting Doom know that they were going to be getting their rematch against the WCW World Tag Team Champions next week on Saturday Night, a fact that seemed to please Ron Simmons, but Butch Reed didn’t look nearly as enthused.

Match: WCW World Tag Team Championship: The Steiner Brothers © vs. The Fabulous Freebirds

Referee: Mickey Jay

Road Agent: Grizzly Smith

Outcome: Scott Steiner pinned Michael Hayes after the Steinerizer at 7:50

My Notes: Hearing what Diamond Dallas Page had said, the Freebirds seemed desperate to win this match, using every cheap trick they could think of. Unfortunately the Steiner Brothers were too much for to them, and Scott Steiner finished Michael Hayes off following the Steinerizer.

My Grade: C-

Magnum T.A tried to get an interview with an obviously disappointed Bobby Eaton, but the former member of the Midnight Express wouldn’t stop to talk him. With the cameras still rolling on the back of a retreating Bobby Eaton, the fans got to see Arn Anderson walk up to him, put his arm around his shoulder and whisper some words into the ear of Bobby Eaton. Quickly Magnum and the cameramen tried to catch up to them, but Arn turned and pushed the camera away before suggesting to Bobby they needed to find somewhere to talk where they would have less interference.

Match: Stan Hansen vs. Tommy Rich

Referee: Randy Anderson

Road Agent: Grizzly Smith

Outcome: Stan Hansen pinned Tommy Rich after the Lariat at 7:12

My Notes: Stan Hansen continued to brutalize his opponents, and finished Tommy Rich off with a brutal looking Lariat. Post match, referee Randy Anderson helped a wobbly Tommy Rich to his feet, only to have Stan Hansen knock him out with a cow bell shot to the head

Jim Ross quickly sent us backstage where a camera was allowing us to see some medics with Sting who was seated on the floor with his back against the wall, and gripping his knee in obvious pain.

Match: WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Ric Flair © vs. Sting

Referee: Nick Patrick

Road Agent: Bob Armstrong

Outcome: Ric Flair made Sting submit with the Figure Four leg lock at 17:37

My Notes: Sting was introduced first, and his music played, but he did not come out from the back. This was repeated again, but on the third time it was Ric Flair who walked out from the back with the World title. He got into the ring, and made Nick Patrick start a ten count. When Nick Patrick had reached seven, Sting stumbled out from the back and hopped to the ring, obviously in pain. Sting showed how big his heart was, by managing to battle Ric Flair for almost twenty minutes, even on his sore knee. Flair managed to get the Figure Four locked on twice, only to see Sting break out of them both times. The third time was the charm though, and the challenger had no choice but to tap out.

My Grade: B+

Post-match the Four Horsemen ran out to inflict even more harm on the downed Sting, fortunately Lex Luger and the Steiner Brothers came running out from the back to clear them from the ring. Meanwhile, Jesse Ventura who had been at ringside to help with the commentary for the Main Event grabbed the arena microphone.

“Since the eight of you want to fight so much, I think I should just go ahead and announce our main event of WrestleWar. It’s going to be the eight of you in a four man tag match…and that match is going to be…..WAR…..GAMES!”

Enjoyed the show. Was good stuff... but...

"Pez Whatley noted this match didn’t work out so well because Junkyard Dog was winded pretty quickly."

Pez Whatley in no universe should ever be an agent for a JYD Match!

Well it will not be happening in WCW again, I can promise you that, after bringing in some new Road Agents I have been able to let "Pistol" Pez go!

Thank you both for reading and predicting every show thus far, please take note that I did upset the preview for next weeks show, so if you want to predict for this show please include those new matches!

The surprising finish came when Lex Luger hefted Bobby up onto his shoulders for the Torture Rack, only to have Eaton slip off his back and go low on the Champion. Randy Anderson didn’t know what to do, but as Bobby Eaton slipped out of the ring and grabbed a steel chair that he used to attack the Champion, he had no choice but to call for the bell. Even with the bell ringing, Bobby Eaton continued to beat down on Lex with the steel chair, targeting the knee with the chair shots. Officials came out from the back, and managed to force him out of the ring. As Randy Anderson was distracted by that, Arn Anderson slipped into the ring with the WCW United States Championship belt. He pulled Lex to his feet, and then dropped him onto the title belt with his famous Spinebuster, before slipping out of the ring and raising the four fingers of the Horsemen.</p><p> <strong>My Grade:</strong> C-</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="35803" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><a href="</p><a href="http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/DDP2_zps10dc9ead.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/DDP2_zps10dc9ead.jpg.html"</a> target="_blank"><img src="<a href="http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/DDP2_zps10dc9ead.jpg" rel="external nofollow">http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/DDP2_zps10dc9ead.jpg"</a> border="0" alt=" photo DDP2_zps10dc9ead.jpg"/></a><a href="<a href="http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/JimmyGarvin1_zps217cce6b.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/JimmyGarvin1_zps217cce6b.jpg.html"</a> target="_blank"><img src="<a href="http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/JimmyGarvin1_zps217cce6b.jpg" rel="external nofollow">http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/JimmyGarvin1_zps217cce6b.jpg"</a> border="0" alt=" photo JimmyGarvin1_zps217cce6b.jpg"/></a><a href="<a href="http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/MichaelHayes1_zps835930e3.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">http://s1338.photobucket.com/user/th3gr81/media/WCW91/MichaelHayes1_zps835930e3.jpg.html"</a> target="_blank"><img src="<a href="http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/MichaelHayes1_zps835930e3.jpg" rel="external nofollow">http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o687/th3gr81/WCW91/MichaelHayes1_zps835930e3.jpg"</a> border="0" alt=" photo MichaelHayes1_zps835930e3.jpg"/></a><p> </p><p> Backstage a camera was in the locker room of the Fabolous Freebirds and their manager Diamond Dallas Page who was frantically waving some papers in their faces.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>“Do you see these?
