Victory Wrestling Association: Can Europe Finally Compete?

Wrestling has long been an under-appreciated sport on the European continent, not able to compare with the established soccer and rugby leagues amongst others. This was hit even harder in May 2007 when Luis Figo Manico decided to close the doors of his hugely popular Ultimate Combat Ring. European wrestling is rocked, but from the demise of one promotion came the birth of two new ones. Two new ones that are direct competition to the newest and most well-funded of Europe’s young promotions, the Victory Wrestling Association. This could be Europe’s opportunity to compete with the well-established American, British, Japanese, Mexican, Canadian and even Australian markets that it lags horribly behind.

 

Whilst Ultimate European Wrestling and European Wrestling All-Stars were born out of the departure of Manico and his promotion, VWA was set up without the politics and hostility that surrounds the other European companies. Swiss businessman and multi-millionaire, Albert Thorp personally invested one million dollars of his own fortune to get the VWA off the ground. A smart business man, Thorp decided to create his own unique style mixing various popular elements of other companies; this ‘ultimate hybrid’ style also dictated that no tag teams or alliances were made. Ironically, the company based around this style of each star being somewhat neutral and not being tied to an alliance is born out of Europe’s neutral zone, Switzerland!

 

The melting pot of wrestling concepts that forms the basis of the company is also a melting pot of wrestlers with stars coming from South Africa, Germany, America, Sweden and countless other countries. This international feel and the youthfulness of many of these workers count greatly towards what could be an impressive future for the VWA. Only time will tell whether the youthful exuberance and talent of people like Landon Mallory and Sebastian Koller, coupled with the experience of stars such as Randy Haute and Griffin can forge a legacy within the European and possibly even the world wrestling arena. Can they lead to a reinvention of Europe as a wrestling hotbed or will they ultimately stumble and not get out of the blocks?

 

Victory Wrestling Association has the chance to be European wrestling's saving grace; can it live up to that bold ambition or will it stand on the edge of greatness only to collapse under the weight of it's own lofty expectations?
