0.1 Introduction to James Heatly Promotions: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants [ThunderVerse]

As you clicked on this diary you might be wondering, "Where is the HCG diary you were going on about a couple of months ago?" Well the truth of the matter is that I ran into a small number of major roadblocks that forced me to put the project on hold. The main reason being was that I didn't feel like I couldn't execute the style of story that I wanted to tell: a story of Hollywood Championship Wrestling as told by its head booker, Jerry King. At the same time I also couldn't find a format that would fit both my ideas and the amount of time I would have to work on the project.

That said, I still want to play TEW and share my experiences with everyone. That's where this diary comes in. For anyone who has read one of my diaries, you'll probably find this diary closest to my NEO runs. You might also see some similarities to a number of other diaries I've run. And that is by design. In this run, I will be taking a good deal of inspiration from the past games I've played in all sorts of forms and fashions.

The first of which will be the continuation of the use of James Heatly as my personal avatar. Like I was saying, one of the reasons I'm not doing the HCG diary at this time is because I couldn't figure out how to write as Jerry King. That's not going to be a problem with this diary since I am going to go with a more laid back and game oriented presentation. But if it was I could write for Heatly for days. It's a character I made for myself around four years ago for Sebplex's GDS-Verse mod and I liked him so much that I used him as my personal avatar ever since.

The second will be the return to the 0/0/0/0 challenge. While some people may find running National companies like WWE, SWF, or UPJ fun, I’m much more comfortable starting my own local promotion and expanding organically. It’s not the size of the roster either. As a fan of stables, my rosters tend to be larger than normal (just take a look at the roster for that RPW diary I just mentioned).

For me, the fun of running a smaller company from scratch is twofold: 1. Control. By starting from scratch, all of the storylines that I make are 100% mine. When playing with established promotions, I always feel like there is something missing because there is a history to the promotion I couldn’t see. There is a lot of information we know about all of our fictional universes, but at the same time there is way more information that we don’t (this was also a reason I was drawn to Hollywood Championship Grappling – the promotion was only a year old). 2. Progress. With the ability to only run or two shows a months for a good portion of the promotion’s history, there are a lot of changes happening in and outside of the company. Your workers improve and then get stolen by bigger companies, which in turn force you to constantly to adapt and start the cycle all over again. With a large company this isn’t as big of an issue as you are too big to be poached very often, and when you are poached, you usually have someone groomed to replace them. You also have to book a lot of shows before your workers show any sort of improvement (not counting popularity).

The final bit of inspiration I will be talking about right now will about the long term plan for the promotion’s structure. While I plan on explaining more about this subject later, this is what I can say now: “James Heatly Promotions” isn’t a promotion; it’s a holding company that will, hopefully, own multiple promotions.

I got this idea back when I played as a re-born Rapid Pro Wrestling in TEW2010. For this game, I made RPW a small promotion that could only hold one event per month. Once the promotion hit regional and had enough popularity that it spilled into other regions, instead of having “RPW” travel into the South East and Great Lakes, I “set up” two other promotions, NEO for the Great Lakes and a re-born SCCW for the South East. Much like FIP and ROH or the current “Wrestling Is...” promotions NEO and SCCW operated separately from their mother promotion, though their stories would sometimes overlap.

With all that said, I hope that I don’t give people the wrong impression about what this diary is and is not. Particularly, I hope people aren’t thinking that I am just going to be re-telling stories I’ve already told beat for beat. While it was my intention to “bring back” some things that I have done in the past, I’m not trying to be lazy. I’m just trying to re-spark my interest in writing.

To end this opening post, I will take a page out of what way proplably my most critically acclaimed dairy, TEW 108: I Can Be A Booker?, a post a question to everyone to stir up some healthy discussion about the game we all love to play: “If you were creating a local promotion from scratch in the Thunder-Verse, which four workers would you sign and why?”

Scott Seal, Ebi Kadivar, Cameron Cody and Paul Crowley.

All four are personal favourites, Cody in particular. Any TVerse game I have Cody is a ratings machine, consistently walking away with the MOTN. Seal strikes me as a Tim Donst-esque character especially when using the shaven head alt. Kadivar & Crowley are a good starting tag team but also the ability to write in a feud is there if the user wishes.

Looking forward to this foolinc. :)

<p>Glad to see this finally up and running.</p><p> </p><p>

In answer to your question...</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Tiger Singh </strong>- one of my favourite characters for the ThunderVerse. He fits well with most entertainment style promotions (which I prefer to book) and is a pretty decent wrestler to boot.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Lenny Rhodes</strong> - he's definitely a future star in the ThunderVerse, and I think that shows in his entertainment and star quality. Plus, there are several different character options available with someone like Rhodes.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Chloe Bourel</strong> - this applies to either a promotion with a women's division or without (where she'd be a valet). Almost entirely thanks to MichiganHero's Gureisu diary, where she had a really strong character.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Alvaro Buey III</strong> - Alvaro Buey Sr was a legend in the sport, Buey Jr is a good businessman who never had the opportunity to wrestler, while Guillermo is a good talent that never had the break he deserved. Buey III has the potential to bring the Buey name back to the top, and even if he doesn't get there, it's always fun to try booking it! <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Hope that's the sort of thing you had in mind!</p>

<p>I was a big fan of both your NEO and Can I be a booker diary so I will be following this one too especially since it´s 0/0/0/0 one which is my personal favorite way to play, mostly for the same reasons you like it but also because on smaller promotions you have more freedom to choose who´s in main event since even semi-decent guys can put-up good enough matches to rise your promotions popularity. When looking to sign guys for local promotion I tend to have few rules that I try to follow, first I scratch everyone who is more popular than unknown since those either won´t sign or are too costly (or both in most cases). I also like to cut anyone who is already working elsewhere to avoid schedule clashes. I also usually avoid anyone over age of 40 since they might be near retirement which would stop me from pushing them and since older guys are likely to be some of the more over guys in starting roster, they don´t exactly fit as jobbers either. Last rule is that I try to avoid guys with negative backstage presence. I would also like to avoid anyone who is likely to be signed to written in first year but since I haven´t played Thunderverse yet with 2013 I have no idea how the game world will progress. Still even with these restrictions I had hard time to pick just four (would have had hard time to pick just 12 too <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />) but here´s my picks, these four would basically form the main event scene for me at the start:</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Christian Prophet</strong>: First of all he has one of the best alts in the game, but he´s also pretty skilled in-ring guy, is good on the mic. Overall he looks like good top heel for small promotions and I see him hanging on the top even after the promotion grows to bigger size, the only problem I could see is that he might be good enough to attract attention elsewhere so he might get stolen quickly. I also like to have at least one older guy on top (local promotions tend to have lots of young wrestlers since those are likely to be less over) to add some veteran presence.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Tombstone</strong>: I like to have one monster heel guy close to the top, and Tombstone would be my initial pick to that job. The competition was tough on this spot as I considered both Ashmedai and Sangoma on this spot too (those three where chosen above others because I like their alts) but Sangoma´s alt looks little bit too much like Prophet´s and Ashmedai is used quite much in Thunderverse diaries (I like to pick some less used guy at times to see if I could make them stars instead of the usual suspects) so Tombstone it is. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ebi Kadivar</strong>: I would have liked to skip Ebi but I need a lead face who could stay on top even when the promotion gets on regional level and I didn´t find any better options than Kadivar. The reason why I wouldn´t have wanted to sign him is that he´s one of those guys who is so good that he´s used in every second Thunderverse diary and he´s also so good that he might well be signed by bigger promotions. Still he´s best fit to the job so I would hire him to be my lead face. One point that I believe is worth pointing out is that I wouldn´t hire his partner Paul Crowley at the start. This is simply because I always miss use main event tag guys and since they would both be in main event title hunt I don´t see their tag team connection being much help unless my plans would be to have tension between them (which likely wouldn´t be the case). I could (and likely would) sign Crowley for later date either get him to help Kadivar in one of his feuds or having him oppose him with classic “you left me behind” kind of angle. I just think there´s more storyline potential if I bring Crowley in on later date instead of having him here in day one.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Tony Pierce</strong>: Pierce would be my last choice as he looks solid enough and while he have been in some diaries, I don´t remember him ever being a top guy so I figure I would give him a change to be one of the main guys. He´s scouting levels are really low so he might be a bust but with Prophet and Kadivar on the roster, I´m willing to take a small risk with Pierce (and Tombstone) as the good thing with local/small promotions is that you are always able to find a replacement guy if something doesn´t work.</p><p> </p><p>

Oops, looks that I got myself carried away a little bit. Sorry about the long answer, seems I´m specialized myself to give unnecessarily long answers to short questions. <img alt=":o" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/redface.png.900245280682ef18c5d82399a93c5827.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

I'm not too invested in the ThunderVerse to know who would be some good local wrestlers, but I'm gonna do it anyways! In theory of being completely unknown, I'm going to focus on unemployed workers and give it my best!

Lenny Rhodes - Piggybacking onto jhd1 here. I agree with him in every way. Love Lenny's look (which is enough reason for me to sign him), his skills are the best you can ask for given the size of the company. Only 22 with good skills on the mic and can string together a match? With no real gimmick? The possibilities are endless. He'd probably be my champion.

Ebi Kadivar - It's criminal that this guy is unemployed and I think he's probably the best steal you can get early on in the game. His partner is good, but I think Ebi is probably the better of the two. I'd probably sign both, but just going with Ebi is a personal choice. With Lenny being my champion, Ebi would be who Lenny would feud with first.

Marcus Franklin - I like this dude. I feel that if he works on his psychology he could go far. He's decent on the mic and has good stamina. He isn't championship material right off the bat, but he can take a good loss while either working as a face or a heel. The choicesssss. Meaning, he'll always come close to the championship, but fall short until I think he's ready.

Jack Ford - The curveball of the crew. I like a veteran and in general, he has everything I could like in a wrestler. Minus the fact that he is 42, but I'll look over that, he's good at taking losses while I make Lenny/Ebi/Marcus into bigger stars. He'll be a main eventer, but I don't ever see him having a serious contending shot at the championship.

So, once again, I know very little about the ThunderVerse, so take my picks with a grain of salt.

Well, here's my four :)

Tony Chi - The only one to make it into every US game I play at some point. Solid top row & performance, only his entertainment skills let him down a little but for my money, future PWI champ right there.

Dr Texas - He may work for a couple of places but for the money you won't get a better US ring general to help your rookies develop and can legit carry the company for as long as you want (or until he retires)

Thomas Beaumont - The UK's favorite unsigned son. Decent top row & performance skills, quite charismatic with good SQ and he's still only young. It's positively criminal that he remains unsigned, and usually in my games after 6 months he's working 3/4 PPA contracts. Says it all for me really :D

and finally

Hollywood Giant - I like to have at least one very menacing guy on my roster, and Giant has enough psychology & top row to avoid too many penalties while being one of the most menacing guys in the US and with a popularity you can afford at the local level.

I'll go with Two known and Two under the radar guys.

Christian Prophet - Because if used correctly he can help small indy's get good grades.

Johnny Cross - Can be a babyface star in a small indy, Talented worker that I feel can be a huge star the future of the T-Verse. A fued with a jealous Prophet could make a good story due to his bio.

Bruce Lender - No one ever uses Lender for some reason. I think he's a solid under rated worker that can still improve.

Marcus Franklin - I've seen him improve a lot in a short time if booked right. He also never complains if he loses a match. So that's a plus.

0.2 Response to ice-breaker question

I'm blown away by all of the feedback that I've received so far. :D

After reading through everyone's picks, I've got to say that I'm shocked that there were only two wrestlers that are on my opening roster out of the the 19 different ones that you selected. The cool thing about this is is that I would use pretty much every single wrestler listed if I had the chance. The Thunderverse is full of fantastic characters, as is clearly shown by the variety in our choices. There are so many choices that for this game I decided to only hire workers that were currently unemployed. While this was initially done as a way to make my start a little bit harder, in practice it probably saved me a whole lot of time and energy in creating the final roster.

Scott Seal - You know I never really got a Tim Donst vibe from Scott from his picture. I always imagined him as more of a techincal version of Michael Elgin. A character who could play the role of hired muscle or a hired muscle skorned.

Ebi Kadivar & Paul Crowley - I absolutely love The Ambassador's Club. Ebi is without a doubt one of the strongest workers in the game and Paul, while not being on the same level as Kadivar is a good hand in his own right. The only issue for be is that Ebi thinks he's too good for a local promotion like JHP. After finding this own, Paul turned into one of the last people I cut when I was finalizing my roster. Hopefully they can be apart of what should be a strong tag team scene in the future.

Cameron Cody - It's a shame that Cody works for CWT now or else he would have definitely been on the roster. I don't know who would have been cut for him, but with Cody's skills I would have made room.

Tiger Singh - After the T-Verse update, Tiger Singh quickly become one of my favorite additions. The only issue is that he costs too much. There isn't enough room in the budget to pay $800 for one worker.

Lenny Rhodes - Speaking of additions to the T-Verse, Lenny Rhodes is definitely one of the best. I liked his character so much that he was going to be one of the guys I brought into HCG. It is exactly that reason why I didn't bring him into JHP. I didn't want to have him overshadow a roster who, for the most part, I had yet to define their characters.

Chloe Bourel - While I've used women in the past, I've decided on holding off on using them in this diary for now to make it easier for me to get a grip on this universe (much like my unemployed only rule). If I was using women at the moment, Bourel is someone I would be looking at down the road (her 30 popluarity rating in the US would make it hard for me to afford her at the beginning).

Alvaro Buey III - So far this is my least favorite worker, which says more about the quality of the other workers than Buey III himself. If only he wasn't such a giant dick.

Christian Prophet - Prophet is a perfect worker for any promotion, but is especially good for smaller promotions. Besides being a strong enough worker to carry any type of fued, he also has a high psychology score, something that is usually in high demand as rest of the roster will most likely be made up of younger workers.

Tombstone - Can't say that I didn't take a hard look at Tombstone when making the roster. I have a soft spot for "dark" characters for Tombstone and like the fact he's a quality big man as though also seem to be a little bit harder to find. That said, his stats do have something to be desired in comparision to some of the other options.

Tony Pearce - I know I said that Prophet was the perfect worker for any promotion, but I might want to rethink that statement for Pearce. While not as polished as Prophet, Pearce makes up for it with youth and just being an extremely nice guy. Given a little bit more experience, he'll become a fine lockerroom leader for a promotion, hopefully my promotion.

Marcus Franklin - Franklin's a freak of a worker. I'm not sure whether to call him Shelton Benjamin if he could talk or black Dolph Ziggler. In either case, I think that I'll be keeping my eye out for Franklin in the future.

Jack Ford - Maybe it's the fact I was struggling to book a roster full of guys like Ford in HCG, but I'm not a fan. Jack is certaining a guy that I could see in midcard of a small or regional promotion. He's performance skills will are high enough to teach younger members of the roster and his passable mic skills will make him more than just an in-ring teacher. However, the lack of any topline stats makes his price a bit too costly right now.

Tony Chi - While not on my roster, I totally get why someone would like him. Chi is a solid in-ring competior, who've only real downfall is his bland picture.

Dr Texas - I love not Terry Funk. Unfortunately, even if he did want to consider an offer for me, I don't think I could afford to have him on my roster. That said, I do like to hire an experienced worker like Rapada once my company is right around the regional level. If he haven't retired by that time, I could see Dr. Texas in that role this time around.

Thomas Beaumont - There is nothing wrong with Thomas Beaumont, however he's one of those guys that I can never figure out a character for. Maybe this time around I can find something for this blue-chip prospect.

Hollywood Giant - A bit too expensive for my tastes, yet once again I could really see him joining the crew in the future. You can never have too many talented big men on the roster.

Johnny Cross - Much like Beaumont, Cross is a solid worker who I just can't figure out a character for. He's just a bit too bland.

Bruce Lender - Now he's a guy with a backstory. Unfortunately, he's just not that good of a worker and isn’t the greatest influence from a locker-room standpoint.

0.3 The Opening Roster

Usually this would be the time where I would go over the details of the promotion, however concerning the ice-breaker question, I think that talking about my roster makes a bit more sense right now. When I first sat down to create the roster I really didn't have too many ideas on who "had" to be on my roster. I just knew that I wanted trios/stables to make up the majority of the roster with a couple of singles wrestler sprinkled in.

After designing four stables which took on varying degrees of inspiration from past diaries (from complete copy to completely new), I found wrestlers to work with within the stable concepts before finally refining the stables based on the wrestlers I signed. Finally, I hired four additional singles wrestlers to balance out the roster a bit (and to give me 16 wrestlers to allow for a knock-out tournament).

¡Viva La Lucha!

Workers: Blue Phoenix / Halcon / Gold Phoenix

Alignment: Face

Original Faction Name: Team Lucha

Motto: Family, tradition, honor, wrestling

Theme(s):

Kayfabe Background: Coming from Mexico, three young men, Blue Phoenix, Halcon, and Gold Phoenix, have banded together to ply their craft in the States to show American audiences what Lucha Libre is all about.

Foolish Musings: Ever since making a lucha stable in one of my first RPW games (1997 C-Verse mod), "Team Lucha" has been a staple stable in many of my games. Due to the nature of most mods, there is usually a wealth of talented, cheap luchadors just waiting to get signed and the ThunderVerse is no exception. All three men are young, talented, and thankfully fluent in English. As an added bonus, Blue and Gold Phoenix have B level chemistry while Halcon starts out with a small amount of overness. This actually a big deal since most Mexican based workers are completely unknown to the US market.

The Eternal

Workers: Christian Prophet / Dread Necturn / Sangoma

Alignment: Heel

Original Faction Name: The Forgotten

Motto: Never forget, never forgive

Theme(s):

Kayfabe Background: Spurned by a sport they love, Christian Prophet and Dread Nocturn have banded together with new comer, Sangoma, to make sure that they will never be at the mercy of a promoter again.

Foolish Musings:It should be no secret that gravitate to "dark" characters in my games. I don't think that there has been a diary of mine that didn't have some type of gothic/demonic/mysterious character in it. I take that back. The very first diary I did was a NYCW diary that didn't get far enough to introduce a dark character into it. In any case, this group is stacked with talent. I already said Christian Prophet was a beast in my previous post, but the same goes for both Dread Nocturn and Sangoma. My biggest fear with this group is that they are going to be too powerful. But I guess I could always break them up if that happens.

A.N.P. (All Night Party)

Workers: Cyber / DISCO Fox / Lord Simon Darcy

Alignment: Face

Original Faction Name: The Scene

Motto: Party hard, fight harder

Theme(s):

/
/

Kayfabe Background: With a friendship forged on the dance floor, Cyber, DISCO Fox, and Lord Simon Darcy have come together to make sure their experiences in wrestling are just as fun as their night life.

Foolish Musings: This group was something that I actually thought of before I even started working on the unreleased HCG project. The only difference was at the time it was a heel stable. I might have just gone with that idea if it wasn't for some other guy making a heel stable lead by DISCO Fox (which if you haven't haven't heard is still alive and kicking!). However flipping the alignment of the group really has opened me up to a whole lot of opportunities. I don't remember the last time I used a fun babyface group like the A.N.P.

Time Paradox 2000

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/foolinc/TVerse/Workers/PuzzleII_alt2.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/foolinc/TVerse/Workers/Puzzle_alt2.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/foolinc/TVerse/Workers/SpecialFX.jpg

Workers: Missing Piece / Puzzle / Special FX

Alignment: Heel

Original Faction Name: The Oddities

Motto: The future waits for no one

Theme(s):

Kayfabe Background: Shrouded in mystery, all that is known about this group is that its leader, Special FX, claims to be “from the distant future of the year 2000”.

Foolish Musings: So yeah, this is going to be a thing. Didn't realize it was going to be a thing until I figured out the groups name, but I did and now you are all going to have to live with this insanity. On a more serious/game-centric view, Special FX is a very strong worker with a fantastic gimmick and the Pieces of the Puzzle have tag team experience and youth on their side.

Unaligned Workers

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/foolinc/TVerse/Workers/KotaroTaguchi.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/foolinc/TVerse/Workers/SuperKenshi.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/foolinc/TVerse/Workers/TeddyWindham.jpghttp://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a288/foolinc/TVerse/Workers/TonyPearce.jpg

Workers (Alignment): Kotaro Taguchi (Heel) / Super Kenshi (Heel) / Teddy Windham (Face) / Tony Pearce (Face)

Theme(s):

/
/
/

Foolish Musings: And it's here were I realize that my roster format doesn't quite work for non-stables. :o Might have to do something about that next time I am giving a roster overview. In any case here are some quick hits about the unaligned workers: Kotaro Taguchi is a solid hand who adds some much needed variety to the roster, Super Kenshi and Tony Pearce are complete studs and could carry the promotion by themselves if they had to (they won't need to ;)), and Teddy Windham is a strong young worker in his own right with a famous father.

<p>Really good roster, there´s lots of talented guys, maybe even too many (as odd as it sounds) as the only lack that I find is lack of jobber guys because anyone from that roster could easily be at least decent midcard guy in small promotion. Will be interesting to see how the pecking order will go and who will be lost into shuffle.</p><p> </p><p>

And good god does The Eternal look like a strong group, will be interesting to see how they work with A.N.P (who look like the most logical opponents on my point of view) considering that their views are likely to be totally differend.</p>

While I'm sure there will be some wrestlers that will get lost in the shuffle, I think I should be able to keep every happy in the short term. And there really isn't a use of looking too far down the road as I'm sure a good number of my talent will get taken from me as companies from the US and Japan get bigger.</p>
