Basketball CAN thrive in Vancouver...or can it?

Recommended Posts

The year is 1995, and the NBA has decided to expand into Canada with teams in Toronto and Vancouver. The landscape of the league has shifted and the Los Angeles Lakers led by Hakeem Olajuwon have won 3 of the last 6 titles. The Miami Heat have owned the Eastern Conference with superstars David Robinson and Mitch Richmond running the show on South Beach.

The expansion draft is right around the corner, and the expansion Vancouver Grizzlies have brought on a young General Manager in Jason Gilmartin to run the show from day one.

OOC: For this dynasty I simulated the history of the NBA starting in 1946 and I am currently in the offseason headed into 1995. I was going to take one of the worst franchises over the years based on W-L percentage of active teams, but instead thought it would be fun to try to win in a city that couldn't keep their team for very long. So here I am. The history of the league is definitely interesting and if anyone has any questions about teams or players I will do my best to shed some light on the history of the league. As it stands the two most dominant franchises over the course of history have been the Philadelphia 76ers winning 9 titles and the Seattle SuperSonics winning 8 straight from 1971-1978. The Detroit Pistons have been to the finals 12 times having won 7 championships, and no other team has won more than 4.

OOC2: I am not very familiar with posting screenshots and such, so as I get more comfortable with it I will add them into the posts. For right now I will mainly be writing things out such as the roster, etc etc.

The first player in Vancouver Grizzlies history is...

The first task at hand was pouring through the scouting reports on the eligible players in this years expansion draft. Several veterans littered the list with teams looking to offload aging players that no longer fit into their plans, as well as large contracts. I felt like I had a pretty good idea of the direction the Grizzlies were going to go, but unfortunately we picked second...which meant the clear cut best player on the board was most likely going to be a Toronto Raptor.

Sure enough the brass in Toronto announced point guard Sherman Douglas as the first pick of the 1995 expansion draft, and with that we were on the clock.

Douglas had played his first 6 seasons in the league with the Cleveland Cavaliers averaging 14.7 points and 7.5 assists a game. The Cavs had brought over another veteran in Rod Strickland a few years back to get the ball to their superstar center Shaquille O'Neal and saw an opportunity to shed themselves of Douglas' contract. All signs point to him running the show in Toronto come the first game of the year.

With our number one target off the board there were several directions we could go. Knowing we were awarded the 2nd pick in the upcoming rookie draft was an important factor, it looks like we have lost out on the Kevin Garnett sweepstakes, but there are several good young players like Jerry Stackhouse, Michael Finley, and Brent Barry that could become the cornerstone of our franchise for years to come. Do we take a gamble on a player like Charles Barkley who comes with a large price tag, but a label of underachiever attached to him? Or do we go with a steady veteran to give us an immediate leader for the team to turn to? I stepped to the podium to announce our pick....

"With the 2nd overall selection, and our first selection, the Vancouver Grizzlies are happy to announce power forward A.C. Green as the first player in franchise history." And with that, the beginning of an era was upon us. At this point in his career Green is a 10 year veteran having played all of his 748 career games with the San Antonio Spurs. In his time there he has averaged 12.8 points per game to go along with 8.3 rebounds, won the 1988 NBA championship with the Spurs, and was an All-Star in 1989. We are looking forward to Green's leadership on and off the court as we begin the process of building a winner in Vancouver.

The full draft summary is listed below.

Rookies to shape the future around...

As we moved on from one draft to another we felt good about what we had accomplished in the expansion draft. Bringing in veterans like AC Green, Terry Porter, and Ed Pinckney was something we had discussed as an organization. The experience they bring will provide to be a huge asset as we continue to grow and bring in younger players through the draft and free agency. Carlos Rogers was a player we really liked and I am hoping he develops nicely into the starting power forward position in the next year or so.

Looking ahead to the rookie draft, the clear cut star of the draft was high schooler Kevin Garnett. With no hesitation the San Antonio Spurs made him the #1 overall selection, and put us in the drivers seat and on the clock.

The clock started, and with that so did the debate in the room. Owner John Brown, our Head Coach Billie Isom, and myself poured over a few scouting reports trying to come to a consensus on who could help this team the most right out of the gate. It came down to two players...electric scorer Jerry Stackhouse out of North Carolina and the best distributor in the draft in PG Damon Stoudamire.

"With the 2nd pick in the 1995 NBA Rookie Draft," NBA Commish David Stern announced to the crowd in Toronto's Skydome, "the Vancouver Grizzlies select Damon Stoudamire, point guard, University of Arizona." The crowd in Toronto seemingly distraught as the small point guard with the nickname of Mighty Mouse had been linked to the Raptors leading up until draft day.

I was secretly very pleased with this pick as I feel the playmaking of Stoudamire will make the guys around him that much better and had we brought in somone like Stackhouse or Michael Finley they would have had trouble trying to create on their own in the first year or so.

The Raptors chose next and went with sharp-shooter Brent Barry out of Oregon State, to which the fans again booed as this time they seemed excited about the prospects of Stackhouse in a Raptors uni.

In the second round we went with small forward Corliss Williamson from the NCAA champion Arkansas Razorbacks. His ability to finish at the rim and being strong on the glass, along with his winning mentality will definitely aid the Grizz in his rookie season.

Free Agency thoughts, and a fashion show.

I feel like I have barely had time to think, let alone have a day off to enjoy the great Vancouver weather as we work towards making sure the Grizzlies are ready to take the floor opening night. Free Agency is right around the corner, and despite having over 9 million in cap space it doesn't appear that we are going to throw money around right out of the gate.

I have been tasked in creating a target list, combining factors such as need within our roster, age, and what could be the most important factor...the ability to convince them to play for an expansion team. Guys like Karl Malone and Chris Mullin would look great in our newly unveiled uniforms but we as a management staff have decided to scale back our list to much more attainable targets.

Speaking of those uniforms, last night we had a huge event to unveil our brand new logo and jerseys to the fans and media assembled at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. The first player in team history AC Green, along with our first ever draft pick Damon Stoudamire and his former Arizona Wildcat teammate Khalid Reeves were on hand to model the new digs amid strobe lights, smoke, and blaring music. It was quite an event and it seems as if the city is beyond ready for NBA basketball here in Vancouver.

Who knew it would be so hard to get players to come to Vancouver!! Saying that we were able to bring two of our targets to the northwest and we are looking forward to getting the preseason underway. Without focusing on our shortcomings, I will instead give you a little insight on who we were able to bring to Vancouver.

PG Bobby Hurley - 1 yr/$255,300

We brought Bobby in to compete for the backup point guard job with the likes of Sleepy Floyd and Khalid Reeves. Hurley was a 2nd round pick by the New Jersey Nets in 1993 but bounced all over the league before finally getting a chance to play with the Clippers in the second half of last season. In 44 games he averaged 3 points and 1.7 assists in limited minutes.

C Dikembe Mutumbo - 4 yr/$14,000,000

The big 7'2" center was on our our initial targets as coach Billie Isom wanted to have a defensive presence in the middle of the court. Some people around the league felt we may have overpaid for a player that hasn't averaged double digit points or rebounds since his rookie year in 1991. The first overall selection by the Magic in 1991, Mutumbo has been solid but very much unspectacular thus far, we however see a player entering his prime at 29 years old and a big shot blocker in the middle of the floor.

Aside from that we felt the value in the free agent market was highly outweighed by the bloated contracts some of the players were asking for so we took the conservative route and look forward to building the team through the draft in the coming years.

Around the league we saw superstar PF Karl Malone sign a 4 yeat contract to play for the Utah Jazz at a cool $37 million over the course of the contract. Malone had played his entire career with the Detroit Pistons, winning a NBA championship in 1991 and was the leagues MVP in 1993. Also the Nets made waves by bringing in three time NBA champion Dennis Rodman to sure up their frontcourt. The Lakers are hoping that first round pick Alan Henderson can effectively replace Rodman as veterans Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler seek their 4th ring together in Los Angeles.

Your 1995 Vancouver Grizzlies

The preseason starts tomorrow and I just left a meeting with head coach Billie Isom who seems pretty excited to get this season going. We discussed the overall state of the roster and our expectations for year one. No one is expecting a championship year one, let alone a playoff contender, but we think we will be able to compete each night and win quite a few games.

Here is our roster and depth chart Coach Isom has presented to me as we head into the first ever game at Generals Motors Place against the Denver Nuggets.

Center

Dikembe Mutumbo

Ed Pinckney

Eric Mobley

Power Forward

A.C. Green

Carlos Rogers

Robert Lock

Small Forward

Connor Henry

Corliss Williamson

Jeff Grayer

Shooting Guard

Terry Porter

Khalid Reeves

Point Guard

Damon Stoudamire

Bobby Hurley

Sleepy Floyd

Randy Woods

Many of our front court players such as Carlos Rogers and Ed Pinckney will see time at both center and power forward depending on what kind of lineup we put out on the floor. The same can be said for Jeff Grayer who will play at both shooting guard and small forward. Connor Henry has played most of his journeyman career in the backcourt, but we want to utilize his 6'7" frame on the wing and will be giving him a chance to start in the league for the first time since 1992.

Starting Lineup

C Dikembe Mutumbo

PF AC Green

SF Connor Henry

SG Terry Porter

PG Damon Stoudamire

OOC: I have completed the preseason and haven't decided how I am going to progess with this dynasty...I am mulling over doing weekly updates with a focus on our player of the week type things, or just doing more of a year to year overview.

As for Mutumbo, I am excited to see what kind of presence he can give me as well...I actually went hard after Larry Johnson in free agency but he chose the Clippers instead so I changed course and was happy to add Mutumbo. He has played his entire career in Orlando, finally starting last year after spending two years coming off the bench and has averaged 7.1 points, 7 rebounds a game, and 1.5 blocks a game.

The preseason was a rough one to say the least, but we as an organization were using it as an opportunity to put different lineups on the floor and see how well our new players meshed together. This team is far from a cohesive unit with each of these guys being in a different city last year, but we definitely saw flashes of brilliance mixed in with the mediocre results.

As a team we averaged a paltry 75 points per game in the six preseason contests, winning only one of them. First round pick Damon Stoudamire led the way scoring wise and that will most likely continue once the calendar brings regular season games our way. I have asked Coach Isom to talk to the young point guard about looking to pass just a bit more and to work on taking high percentage shots. The team shot just over 35% from the floor and it doesn't take much to realize we won't be winning many games if that continues. Stoudamire was one of the most crimial offenders as he launched over 7 3-pointers a game while shooting 24% from downtown.

Coach Isom has had the team working on getting the ball down on the post to Mutumbo and Green to let them create down low. Mighty Mouse still runs the show and I am excited to see him create and score for us this year, but for us to become a better team his assists have to increase.

Right there.

Makes this Vancouver Grizzlies franchise have a better chance at success than it ever did with the worst every GM in the history of pro sports... Stu Too Stupid For Words Jackson.

Best of luck, Vancouver is a tragic tale told by Stern.

Haha! I am still around and working on this...have the first month write up practically done. Had a nasty stomach bug and first week of little league baseball coaching, so its been hard to come by time for other stuff.
