I'm not personally certain that a monthly vote is the best way to highlight previous diaries. But I might not be imagining it right, if every diary is eligible each month then I can't see how it wouldn't just be a 'which is the best diary ever vote'... which doesn't seem to warrant a new vote each month. If however it had more specific topics to vote on each month then I could see it being interesting. </p><p> </p><p> That said, I do think anything that would help introduce new readers and writers to diaries they wouldn't normally see is a good idea, so I do hope to see it start.</p>

<p>I also am not sure what the point of having an historic diary of the month would be. I mean there have been a couple of top fifty (Or was it one hundred?) lists done on here in the past and so if people are curious enough they can just look at that. Having this historic diary of the month would only serve to reward diaries that have already been celebrated time and time again. If a new reader really wanted to check out one of them, they could just go into whatever section said diary is located and check it out. </p><p> </p><p>

What I think could be done is maybe do a thread much like what <strong>christmas_ape</strong> has done. Only make this thread for past diaries, granted that would take a ton of work to do but I guess there could be some rules made as to which diary can make it onto the list. Such as a diary had to have posted x amount of shows in order to make the list. I don't know, like I said a list like that would take forever to do.</p>

I also think that historic diaries don't need awards. If it was a great diary it got its time in the slight when it was active. I think k that's what the PDF section should be for. If new comers want to read great diaries of the past read the PDFs and the energy went into seeking these diaries out could go into converting them to PDFs. There is a lot of voting the way it is and honestly the entire point of these awards is to bring attention to diaries currently being written. How do we even decide which diaries deserve to be nominated. Most importantly I would like to think the people who vote on current DOTMs do their "homework" and read some of each diary that is nominated or at least glance at a few. There are so many people that don't have enough time to read current DOTMs throwing a whole new category in there for diaries that already had their chances at awards isn't worth it. If anything if there is a big movement for this (which I don't think there is) that effort should go into making the PDF thread more expansive. I see no advantage to creating an award for this. We already have the hall of fame and like I said the off thread could be done better. If that's not enough spotlight for posters and diaries of the past I don't think we should add more. I know you're looking for ways to make this thing better but I'm personally really happy with the set up we are using now.
