FCW: The Best of Caribbean Wrestling (C-Verse 2014)

Carly Colón’s News from the Island

Recently I caught up with new FCW booker Robbie Sanchez to discuss his recent accession to the booking position, his plans for FCW and what we can expect from the company going forward.

****

CC: I guess the obvious question is, how did you come to join FCW? As somebody who’s been with USPW since quite literally day one, it was a real surprise when you jumped ship.

Robbie: Really, it was just down to wanting a change. Like you said, I’ve been with USPW since their first show, and it was time for a change. Also, USPW’s a very different company than when I started- that’s not a criticism of anyone, it’s just one of those things that happen as companies grow, but with the size it is now I didn’t feel like I fit with the company’s ethos anymore.

CC: How so?

Robbie: It’s a corporate thing mostly. Now, okay, Sam Strong is never going to be the kind of businessman Richard Eisen is, that’s just a given, but when you’re dealing with TV people and Pay-Per-View people you have to project a certain image, and I just wasn’t into all of that. Let’s face it, you don’t get into wrestling because you like wearing a suit.

CC: Is that what you attracted you to FCW, the less formal environment? I’ve had Stranger and Rico on here before talking about how relaxed Power is compared to other promoters.

Robbie: To be honest, that didn’t even come up ‘til I started here. No, what I really went for here was the chance to be my own boss- I’d worked on the creative side for USPW but that was under Shane Sneer, and we have very different opinions on how to run a feud. At FCW I’m pretty much in charge of everything creative- Power has final say but all the ideas are mine.

CC: That brings us rather neatly onto your plans for FCW. Simply put, what can we expect?

Robbie: The big thing I’m starting with is overhauling the roster; there’s some dead weight in very key positions and I want to make sure that everyone who’s holding a title deserves it. I’m also wanting to bring more of a lucha influence back into FCW; don’t forget, back in 2008 we had guys like Amo del Gato and Hijo del Zonk working for us, and I’d like to see some more masked guys back in the company.

CC: Any word on who the new arrivals might be?

Robbie: Obviously I can’t say too much- we’re still in negotiations- but I can confirm that our first offer was to Boriken Love Machine Jr.- he’s a really promising young worker, a native Puerto Rican, and it’s kind of ridiculous that FCW didn’t sign him when he debuted.

CC: On that note, it’s time to wind things up. As always, if you’re looking for more information on Freedom Caribbean Wrestling you can check out either my website, www.caribbeanwrestling.com, or head directly to www.Freedomwrestling.com. ‘Til next time, then, and we’ll see you at the show.

From the diary of Robbie Sanchez:

Got the new deals signed off- fortunately Power seems on board so far. Been going through the roster so I know who I’ve got where and what the plans are:

Main Event

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/PuertoRicanPower_zpsa66e6c92.jpg

Puerto Rican Power

Age: 42 Billed From: Right Here in Puerto Rico

Entrance Music: The Touch- Stan Bush

Finisher: Atomic Full Nelson (Full Nelson), San Juan Impact (Gorilla Press Slam), San Juan Rush (Front Powerslam)

My boss, Power’s easily our number one star. For one thing, he’s a national hero to most Puerto Ricans; any time he loses a match we have to work hard to avoid a full-on riot. For another thing, and rather more usefully, he’s also a pretty solid worker who can call his own matches, always a useful skill at our level. Okay, so at 42 he’s a good 7 years past his best, but his name value and decent workrate mean he’ll always be useful in our main event (as if I had a choice on that).

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/HandsomeStranger_zps6f75420b.jpg

Handsome Stranger

Age: 38 Billed From: Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico

Entrance Music: Should I Stay or Should I Go- Los Fabulosos Cadillacs

Finisher: Catalan Twist (Spinning Neckbreaker), La Gota (Uranage Slam)

Our number one heel, Stranger’s a very solid hand that can be depended on to get the job done in the ring and on the mic. He’s also managed to stave off any signs of aging or time decline, which should keep him looking fairly secure in his spot for quite some time yet. The only problem with Stranger, and it’s one endemic to all our heels, is that he’s a long way behind our top faces in terms of name value- that could make title switches problematic.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/BradfordPeverell_zpsc330960e.jpg

Bradford Peverell

Age: 29 Billed From: Freehold, New Jersey

Entrance Music: Born to Run- Bruce Springsteen

Finisher: Dream Left Hook (Left Hook punch)

Bradford Peverell is FCW’s first home made star, and it’s not had to see why. He’s a good brawler with decent charisma, and whilst his psychology basically consists of ‘punch them and then punch them again’ he’s done a good job of developing the ability to tell a story around that. I could see a Puerto Rican Title run in his future, but that does require him to get past Power and Russell, both of whom are huge stars on the island. Brad’s also one of our top locker-room leaders, and I want to keep him close to the top of the card so that positive influence can help restrain our more problematic workers.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/HellsBouncer_alt2_zps3fd3adb0.jpg

Hell’s Champion

Age: 27 Billed From: The Outer Darkness

Entrance Music: For Whom the Bell Tolls- Metallica

Finisher: Damnation Drop (Sidewalk Slam)

Physically our biggest heel, Champion’s surprisingly good for someone as big as he is (that, or I’m just jaded from having to ref so many T-Rex matches back in USPW). Okay, so he’s never going to be the best brawler in the world, but he can bump surprisingly well for a guy who only leaves his feet twice a year, and whilst I’d like to see him work on his stamina he’s easily the most powerful wrestler we've got. Let’s not forget, he’s the only man who’s ever slammed Puerto Rican Power in the history of FCW, and that counts for a hell of a lot. I'm inclined to give Champ a chance to impress me and see what he can do.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/BillyRussell_zps8fadfe3d.jpg

Billy Russell

Age: 39 Billed From: Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico

Entrance Music: Dale Don Dale- Don Omar

Finisher: Grounded Knee Flurry, Knee Bar, Twisting Arm Lock (Key Lock)

Our other top face, Billy hasn't got Brad’s charisma or psychology but is second only to Power in terms of name value- as an Islander-made-good he’s extremely popular with our fanbase. In fairness he’s also a great technical worker who is an absolute master of mat wrestling and submissions, and he can hold his end up pretty well in a brawl. Like Champion I want to see him up close and figure out what he can deliver in the ring, but I figure that he’ll be a part of our plans for a long time going forward.

Upper Midcard

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/GiantBrody_zps6e980248.jpg

Giant Brody

Age: 27 Billed From: Detroit, Michigan

Entrance Music: Seven Nation Army- White Stripes

Finisher: Single Handed Choke Slam, Wicked Big Foot (Standing Big Boot)

Brody’s another one of FCW’s long parade of monsters, and like most of them (the ones that are left, anyway) he’s a surprisingly competent worker. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that he’s not great psychologically or stamina-wise, but he can get it done in the brawl and has a couple of great-looking flashy moves to fall back on. Plus, he’s a great guy backstage and that counts for a lot. I’ve got him lined up to move into the tag division as the replacement for King Kong Kennedy- him and Ox should work pretty well together.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/KirkJameson_zps1aed428b.jpg

Kirk Jameson

Age: 27 Billed From: Boston, Massachusetts

Entrance Music: More than a Feeling- Boston

Finisher: Kirk-Hold (Koji Clutch), The Bullseye (Double Underhook Facebuster)

Kirk’s a bit of a funny one. On the one hand, he’s certainly one of our most talented worker, but on the other I’m not sure I buy into him as a legit breakthrough star. That’s partially down to his lack of mic skills, but he feels disappointingly smaller-than-life compared to goliaths like Power or legit bad-@sses like Billy Russell or Brad Peverell. Still, he’s a good worker to have near the top of the card, and he’s benefitting from his role as apprentice party-boy to Hernandez and Singh.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/LeperMessiah_zpsd499d899.jpg

Leper Messiah

Age: 38 Billed From: The Dark Side of the Human Mind

Entrance Music: Danse Macabre- Camille Saint-Saëns

Finisher: The Prophecy (Full Nelson Bomb)

Okay, can somebody explain to me why Sam or Richard Eisen haven’t signed this guy yet? I mean, really, Leper Messiah is awesome. Alright, so he’s not the best worker in the ring, but he’s capable enough, he’s a big guy, and he sells the character with a flair I’ve not seen from a lot of people. Plus, like a lot of our top tier stars he’s a great guy in the locker room, thereby sealing the deal to keep him near the top for a long time to come. He’s a past Puerto Rican Champion, and I want to see him get that title again.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/MainstreamHernandez_zps5660c541.jpg

Mainstream Hernandez

Age: 27 Billed From: Tofino, Canada

Entrance Music: Fun, Fun, Fun- The Beach Boys

Finisher: Apparition #14 (Shooting Star Press), Pontiac to Home (Gory Neckbreaker), Super Kick

Hernandez is a real up-and-comer and a future top star for us by my reckoning. Like his sometime partner Kirk he’s a great worker, but whereas Jameson is held back by a lack of charisma and a very contained moveset Hernandez is all flash and charisma. He’s currently heading up the San Juan Beach Party, a trio consisting of him, Kirk and Singh whose gimmick is that they love to hang out on the beach and party. In Mainstream’s case that’s not so much a gimmick as a way of life.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/KashmirSingh_alt1_zps9a35ec7a.jpg

The Sensational Singh

Age: 36 Billed From: Now Residing in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Entrance Music: More More More- Andrea True Connection

Finisher: Bombay Duck (Haas of Pain) Cal-Cutter (Diamond Cutter)

The final third of the San Juan Beach Party, Singh has more in common with Hernandez than Jameson in terms of main event potential. His flamboyance and workrate both give him the feel of a top FCW star, and he’s got the gas and psychology to handle a top run. I don’t want to rush him up there, though- we do that and we may as well box him up and send him straight up to Supreme or TCW.

Midcard

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/CarlosGonzalez_zpsf1f54194.jpg

Carlos Gonzales

Age: 31 Billed From: Little Havana, Florida

Entrance Music: Smooth- Santana

Finisher: Flat-Out (Shining Wizard)

Carlos is currently a fan favourite, but let’s face it that’s entirely because of what happened with Shawn and not down to any talent or aptitude for the role on Carlos’ part. I’m willing to cut him some slack after what happened with his brother, but Carlos is not an easy person to work with by any means and would probably be better suited to PSW or one of the California hardcore outfits than us.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/HectorGalindo_zps87ff06e0.jpg

Hector Galindo

Age: 28 Billed From: Compton, California

Entrance Music: La Raza- Kid Frost.

Finisher: 450 Splash

One third of the Latino Kings alongside Jesus Chavez and Rudy Velasquez, Hector’s the easiest to get along backstage with but easily the weakest in the ring. He’s got some great aerial offence and is real flashy, but the guy’s famous for his inconsistency and doesn’t have the psychology to cover for that. Still, his tag team with Rudy is a cornerstone of the tag division, and the Kings are so tight that firing any one of them creates problems with the other two.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/JesusChavez_zps06925bd0.jpg

Jesus Chavez

Age: 28 Billed From: Compton, California

Entrance Music: La Raza- Kid Frost.

Finisher: The 187 Neckbreaker (Hangman’s Neckbreaker)

Jesus is kind of the opposite of Hector: where Hector’s not very talented but has a good personality, Jesus has some talent but is basically an @sshole behind the scenes. Currently playing the muscle in the Latino Kings, Jesus has a decent amount of potential and probably could break out as a singles star (he’s got the size and the skill to fit with our main event), but given his attitude he’s more likely to stay in the midcard whilst he improves a bit.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/KidSanJuan_zps402f151a.jpg

Kid San Juan

Age: 26 Billed From: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Entrance Music: La Bamba- Ritchie Valens

Finisher: Moonsault Press (Moonsault to a standing opponent)

One half of the Island Boys, Kid San Juan’s another patriotic babyface in the mould of Power or Billy, except that he’s much, much smaller (and also American, but it’s amazing what a good mask can do). He’ll probably never be our best worker, but he’s decent at everything and is young enough to improve a bit. It helps that the fans have taken to his ‘adopted son’ schtick, which wasn’t guaranteed given how little he seems to have known about Puerto Rico before he signed here.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/MattHocking_zps6bed717d.jpg

Matt Hocking

Age: 24 Billed From: Jacksonville, Florida

Entrance Music: Anything That’s Rock and Roll- Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Finisher: Hock Shock (Super Kick)

Our current People’s Champion, Matt’s already a really solid worker with great psychology and a good all-round game. He’s a great guy to have in the midcard, but I’ve got to admit- I just don’t see him as a top guy. He’s too small and doesn’t have the charisma to make up for that, although I’m quite happy to admit that I won’t object if the fans get behind him; he can get the job done, I just don’t think the fans will buy into him as a Puerto Rican Champion.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/OxKreviazuk_zps24991097.jpg

Ox Mastadon

Age: 31 Billed From: Detroit, Michigan

Entrance Music: Seven Nation Army- White Stripes

Finisher: Ox Plough (Avalanche), Ten Ton Splash (Big Splash)

A former three-time Tag Team Champion, Ox probably deserves the title belts a lot more than his former partner ever did. Okay, so he’ll never be the best wrestler in the world, but he carries his bulk pretty well and can work a surprisingly decent match. I think it helps that he’s not as big as some of our other monsters- he’s huge, but it’s more bulk than height and that means it’s easier for him to move around and sell for the smaller guys (though he still never goes off his feet for anyone smaller than Heavyweight). His new team with Giant Brody should work out pretty well, provided that the chemistry’s on their side.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/RudyVelasquez_zps3e06ebb8.jpg

Rudy Velasquez

Age: 28 Billed From: Compton, California

Entrance Music: La Raza- Kid Frost.

Finisher: Street Cutter (Twist of Fate)

The final third of the Latino Kings, Rudy’s easily the most talented of the three. In fact, you could probably argue that he’s the most talented wrestler in the company and deserves a main event run, though I’m not sure everyone would agree with you. Certainly he could handle a run at the top if it came to it, but so far Rudy’s refused to leave Hector or Jesus behind, and neither of them are ready for anything like a top run.

Lower Midcard

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/IslandBoyApollo_zps63942ae4.jpg

Island Boy Apollo

Age: 24 Billed From: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Entrance Music: La Borinqueña

Finisher: Island Driver (Muscle Buster), Superplex

There’s no doubt about it- Island Boy Apollo is firmly in position to become the next Puerto Rican Power. Maybe not in terms of being a direct copy- he’s smaller and nowhere near as charismatic or fundamentally sound- but Apollo’s got all the tools to be a huge star for FCW in the future. He’s already one of the main voices in the locker room, which bodes well for his future.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/JoffyLaine_zps6ebaf900.jpg

Joffy Laine

Age: 22 Billed From: Fort Worth, Texas

Entrance Music: I Fought the Law- Bobby Fuller Four

Finisher: Death Spiral (T-Bone Suplex)

Joffy’s certainly a very promising, charismatic young worker, and at 22 he’s got time to improve his already considerable skills into something really impressive. Unfortunately he’s held back by two major problems; he can’t sell, and he runs Hector close on the botch-o-meter. That keeps him firmly near the bottom of the card, and I don’t see him making the midcard ‘til at least one of those improves.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/Mutant_zps09a079e3.jpg

Mutant

Age: 19 Billed From: Death Valley

Entrance Music: Six Feet Under Theme- Thomas Newman

Finisher: The Tina-Turner (Jackhammer)

Mutant’s a pretty promising rookie- not the best I’ve ever seen, but given his size there’s enough skill there to make him a worthwhile addition to the roster. As for his weaknesses, there’s nothing really wrong with him that experience won’t solve, and his weirdo character and out-there style has made him a natural fit as Leper Messiah’s onscreen protégé, an association that certainly won’t do him any harm.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/RobReynolds_zpsfa9174dd.jpg

Rob Reynolds

Age: 23 Billed From: Detroit, Michigan

Entrance Music: Kick Out the Jams- MC5

Finisher: Real Deal Rocker (Gamengiri)

A rock-solid midcarder, Rob’s got the skills to do some good things around the People’s Championship, given the chance. He’s not big enough to go too far up the card, though, and whilst his martial artist schtick may just have the legit bad-@ss feel to make him a potential successor to Billy Russell he’s currently the wrong side of the heel-face divide.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/TexTagan_zps8f55de56.jpg

Tex Tagan

Age: 36 Billed From: El Paso, Texas

Entrance Music: Turn the Page- Bog Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

Finisher: Lariat Clothesline

He’s old for such an inexperienced wrestler (he’s only been wrestling a couple of years), but Tex is a very solid hand and not likely to make mistakes any time soon. Plus, he’s one of our legion of positive influences, which is surprising given that he’s a pretty antisocial guy- clearly it’s not what you say that counts. Right now he’s teaming up with Joffy Laine as the Texas Mustangs, but I don’t see them breaking into the title chase until they’ve both wracked up some experience.

Openers

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/BorikenLoveMachine_zpsf3e6e574.jpg

Boriken Love Machine Jr.

Age: 21 Billed From: Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

Entrance Music: Love Machine- The Miracles

Finisher: Automatic Loving (Full Rotation Headscissor Takedown)

One of my two new signings, Boriken comes loaded with potential, and is right up there with Island Boy Apollo as one of our next big things. If anything he’s got the edge on Apollo as he’s a slightly better wrestler, and whilst he’s maybe a bit different than the big fiery brawlers or straight-ahead tough guys our fans usually love he’s got the pedigree and native background to seal the deal. Right now, though, I want him to get a bit more experience before he shoots up the card, and as one of our low-ranked heels he’s probably going to need a turn before he’s ready to take his place as one of our top stars.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/ElMiacutetico_zpsa9fa8764.jpg

El Mítico Jr.

Age: 22 Billed From: Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico

Entrance Music: Hechicera- Maná

Finisher: German Suplex, Northern Lights Suplex

There’s nothing more gratifying than signing two guys and finding you’ve signed two next big things; everything that I said about Boriken Love Machine goes for El Mítico. In fact, it probably goes double- Mítico’s a better worker than either Love Machine or Apollo, with more charisma and conditioning that has to be seen to be believed. Once he’s settled in and paid his dues expect this guy to head straight to the top.

Non-Wrestlers

Lee Bambino

FCW’s lead announcer, I wouldn’t call Lee extraordinary but he can get the job done when it counts. Frankly, there’s no need to replace him unless one of the big leagues let Danny J or Jerry Eisen go, and since that’ll never happen Lee’s likely to be a fixture at our shows.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/CueballLynch_zps0841a32a.jpg

Cueball Lynch

Our colour commentator, Cueball plays a shameless heel that’s basically a throwback to the old territory days. He’s a nice guy, and a very talented commentator who really gets our style, so he’s not going anywhere even if someone better becomes available.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/RobbieSanchez_zpsc3aea15d.jpg

Robbie Sanchez

As well as handling the booking I’ve taken over from Ryan Holland as FCW’s senior official. I’m better than he was, after all, and there’s no point paying two people to do one man’s job.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/ClarenceGarcia_zps75e85cb3.jpg

Clarence Garcia

Clarence has come as our junior referee- I can’t work every match if I’m also handling the booking, and Clarence is willing to work for cheap and not cause trouble. As a Spanish speaker he also provides some extra input on that, which will help.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/RicoSantana_zpsafde55f6.jpg

Rico Santana

FCW’s road agent, Rico’s one of the best on the indies so there’s no real need to replace him or augment him with additional signings.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/CarlBatch_zps3719390a.jpg

Carl Batch

Currently managing Giant Brody and Ox Mastadon, Carl’s a little more expensive than I’d like in a manager but is still the best talker we’ve got outside of the ring. He’ll have to prove himself over the next year or so, but provided that he doesn’t ask for crazy money I don’t see any reason to get rid of him when his contract is up.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/Monique_zps658ca8b7.jpg

Monique

Another one of my new signings, Monique’s a Puerto Rican valet who’s more notable for her height than for any outstanding ability she possesses. I’ve put her with Island Boy Apollo, as he’s one of the very few guys we’ve got who won’t wind up looking slightly silly standing next to her.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/SweetTabitha_zps0a95f087.jpg

Sweet Tabitha

The valet of the San Juan Beach Party, Tabitha’s a replacement for Kirk’s old valet Maryam Vega. It’s a definite trade-up; Tabitha’s more talented, better looking and cheaper than Maryam, so it’s hard to complain about her.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/FCW/VinnyCruz_zpsd782bca2.jpg

Vinnie Cruz

Vinnie’s been brought in to handle the mic work for The Latino Kings playing their lawyer (though we’re emphasising his arrogance more than his lawyering, for gimmick purposes). He’s pretty competent, but until we get him on the mic and see what he can do it’s hard to be sure what he’ll deliver.

Bradford Peverell vs. El Mítico Jr.

We kicked things off with the closest thing we had to a guaranteed quality opener; you don’t waste your top stars in the curtain-puller but you still need somebody who can get it done and keep people interested. Brad, who’s one of our main event guys but who doesn’t have a feud planned out yet, was a good compromise for the opener, and against a rising star like Mítico you knew you’d get something good. Sure enough this was a quality bout that saw both guys show definite improvement- Brad in his performance skills, Mítico in his rumble and performance skills- before Brad dropped his foe with the Dream Left Hook.

The Puerto Rican Boys vs. Boriken Love Machine Jr. & Rob Reynolds

Things cooled off a bit with this match, although to be fair nobody was expecting these four to equal the opener. They’re all good, but Brad and Mítico are on another level so it would’ve taken something pretty special for these guys to overtake that. There were a lot of positives to take away from this one, though; Island Boy Apollo showed some aerial improvement, and both he and Rob showed signs of improving their performance skills as well. The big news, though, was in the gimmicks; people love Boriken’s Old School Heel gimmick, and clearly they like em tall in Puerto Rico because the crowd had no trouble buying into Monique’s portrayal of a stereotypical Babe. The Puerto Rican Boys took the win here, with Apollo pinning Love Machine after an Island Driver whilst Kid San Juan dropped Rob with a Cross Body.

It’s promo time, as Carl Batch is on hype duty for his team of Mass Effect

“Yo yo yo, Mass Effect in da hizzouse! I’m telling all’a you crackers, these two specimens, they’re the baddest dogs in the pound and they are gonna walk all over any of those ham-and-eggers sitting in the back right now! We got Giant Brody, the man so dangerous Rhode Island couldn’t handle him, we got the monster Ox Mastadon, we got Mass Effect and soon we’re gonna have the Tag Team Titles as well, dig it!”

Carl’s a good talker, and it’s easy to sell the menace of two guys who block out the sun when they stand next to each other.

Mass Effect vs. The Texas Mustangs

I was worried this wouldn’t be much cop, but fortunately this turned out to be a very solid bout. It helped that I was on hand to referee this one- I’ve worked so many monster matches at USPW that running this one was second nature, and Rico’s script did a good job of masking everyone’s weaknesses. It wasn’t perfect- it’d take a genius to mask Joffy’s inability to hit more than three moves in a row without botching something, and his wild over-selling is a pain in the @ss- but for the most part the crowd got behind the Mustangs and booed Mass Effect with a passion (in fact, they really hate Brody, which might be a problem down the line). In the end this one went to the monsters, as Ox dropped Joffy with an Ox Plough before Giant Brody nailed Tex with a One Handed Choke Slam and pinned him with a foot on his chest.

Winners: Mass Effect Match Rating: D

*

No sooner has the bell rung than Ox and Brody are focussing their efforts on Joffy Laine, slapping him around and setting up for a Double Chokeslam (which Lee claimed could break Joffy’s spine; I’m not sure about that, but points to Lee for drama). Fortunately for Laine, before they could nail the move the Puerto Rican Boys come charging out to the rescue, Apollo going toe-to-toe with Brody and slinging punches whilst Kid runs Ox off with a baseball bat. As for reaction, this was…okay, I guess; the crowd cared, just not much.

We’re once again back to the promo station, as Leper Messiah and Mutant are on hype duty for their match with Carlos and Matt

“Is there truly anything more beautiful than a human being in pain? Tonight, Carlos, I will turn you into beautiful works of art, masterpieces of agony and horror. And not just art, but music as well- the music of breaking bones and screams of pain. It will be my masterpiece…you will be my masterpiece”

“You have heard from the visionary that is my master, Leper Messiah. For myself, it remains only to say- when I am finished, Matthew Hocking, you will be the most beautiful man on the face of the earth. You will look so beautiful with a second smile in your throat, with the empty eye-sockets of a true starlet, with the dead soul of a man who’s spirit has been broken. It will be simply…fabulous”

Leper Messiah and Mutant have mastered the art of making weird seem scary, and their promos really reflect that.

Carlos Gonzalez & Matt Hocking vs. Leper Messiah & Mutant

This was another weaker match, but again it’s pretty much what I’d expected. Messiah and Mutant’s strengths are very much not in the ring, and whilst Matt’s good he can’t carry three other wrestlers. Carlos, though, is the biggest problem; not only is he an at-best average worker, he’s a terrible babyface. The crowd started cheering for him after what happened with Shawn, but Carlos clearly doesn’t know how to play the good guy role, either as a face-in-peril or as the battling hero. On the upside, I was once again in the ring to keep things ticking over, both the heel showed improvement and everyone except Carlos has star quality to spare. Messiah took the win here, dropping Carlos with The Prophecy whilst Mutant introduced Matt’s face to the ring-post repeatedly.

San Juan Beach Party vs. The Latino Kings

For some reason, FCW’s six-man tag matches are all contested under lucha rules. No idea why- it’s not like any of other matches use those rules- but with a feud like this a trios match is a great way of kicking it off. Both of these teams are great trios, and whilst Beach Party are definitely the more talented group, the Kings have been working together for years. That was really the story of the match; one-on-one the Beach Party were able to control the match, but the Kings used their experience to take back the advantage. Of course, they also cheated like maniacs, but that’s heels for you. In the end, this one went to a double DQ; the Kings ganged up on Kirk three-to-one, and there was no way Hernandez and Singh were going to let them get away with that, leading to a wild brawl that force Clarence to throw the match out.

It’s promo time, as we hear from Puerto Rican Power

“You and me, Hell’s Champion, we got a lot of history together. Ain’t been nobody since Dread that could slam me except you, and you’re the only one ever beat me in a straight fight for the Puerto Rican title. And tonight, we’re facing off once again for a chance at that very same title, that belt’s that defined so many of our wars, and I’m promising all of my Powerfans, all’a you in the Gymnasium Aguada and around this beautiful Island we all call home, tonight I’m not losing to that evil son-of-a-gun Hell’s Champion. You want to know why that is Champion? It’s because you don’t deserve that belt, you don’t deserve the chance to taint that belt with your evil, and tonight me and all the little Powerfans are going to stop you right in your tracks! Tonight belongs to right, because I am fighting for good and I HAVE THE POWAAAAAAAAHHH!”

Our audience loves Power, as you might expect, and anytime he’s on camera the fans go nuts.

Billy Russell vs. Handsome Stranger

A quick word of explanation: the FCW Puerto Rican title is currently vacant because I fired the champ, Titan, on account of he’s an awful human being and I don’t want to deal with his sh*t. With One Night of FREEDOM coming up in February, I figured the best thing to do was to run a mini-tournament to set up the main event next month, thereby also allowing me to get a handle on what our main event is capable of. In this case, it seems like quite a bit; this was a fantastic match. Admittedly I probably should have expected; in terms of raw ability these two are probably our two best top stars, and whilst Billy’s psychology isn’t great it’s definitely good enough to take Rico’s scripting and adapt it in the ring. Billy also earned himself a big tick on the plus side for accept the finish, which saw him go down to a low blow from Stranger, who promptly rolled him into a Small Package and grabbed a handful of tights to secure the victory.

Winner: Handsome Stranger Match Rating: C+

Puerto Rican Power vs. Hell’s Champion

After the great semi-main this was a bit of a comedown; it was still a good match, but no better than Beach Party/Latino Kings and certainly nothing on Stranger/Russell. I’m going to pin that on Champion, who’s solid but not great and probably needs to be carried more than I’d originally figured on. He’s still young enough to improve, though, and once I’ve figured out a good feud for him that’ll probably help (I’m thinking Brad Peverell, but Billy’s also a possibility). As for The Boss…well, he’s always good, and our crowd loves him so much that his limitations have long since ceased to be a factor. Naturally, he took the win here- I don’t want to spark a riot on my very first show- kicking out of the Damnation Drop before nailing the San Juan Impact to secure the pinfall.

Winner: Puerto Rican Power Match Rating: C-

Overall Rating: C, which is brilliant for a company our size.

Naturally I’ve had a lot of feedback from fans, and as you might expect the forums have been full of discussion on the last show, and the general consensus has been kind of muted, with the feeling being that it was a good show but with a lot of room for improvement- the big thing a few people have pointed to is the lack of Puerto Rican Power (confined to one promo and a match) and a lack of continuity with what had gone before, thanks to all-new tag champions and no references to ex-Puerto Rican champ Titan. Indeed, Robbie’s decision to sack Titan,as well as ex-tag champ King Kong Kennedy, has been hugely controversial- my inbox has been going crazy with messages on both sides of the issue.

Obviously, though, this column is first and foremost my take on FCW, and what I think is this: Robbie Sanchez was absolutely justified in letting these two go. Now, I don’t say that he was right or wrong, that’s something that we will only know in time, but he absolutely had the right to make that call and carry it out. It’s true, both Titan and Kennedy had their fans, and the decision to fire two of your four champions does smack a little of reset button-style booking, but I can remember how many fans were complaining when the 937lb Express won the titles, and for every fan who liked Titan there was another one who didn’t want to see him anywhere near an FCW ring. The truth is, you can’t please all of the fans all of the time, and Robbie’s clearly set on booking FCW the way he wants to and not listening to every opinion he encounters on the internet.

On the news front, the big story is Billy Russell’s decision to sign a touring deal with PGHW in Japan. The impact of that decision has already been felt, with FCW moving their shows from the usual third Friday of the month slot to the following Sunday afternoon, and it’s likely that we’ll see other changes in the coming months, once Billy starts to feel the effects of PGHW’s schedule. On the plus side, however, news has reached me that Mainstream Hernandez has apparently signed a new deal with the company, keeping him with the island for the next 4 years. Given his key role in the forthcoming Beach Party/Latino Kings feud, and the fact that he’s generally pretty awesome, this is definitely good news.

UPDATE: The Card for FCW The Fight for FREEDOM has been released- here’s what we’re looking at so far:

FOR THE FCW PUERTO RICAN TITLE

Puerto Rican Power vs. Handsome Stranger

Billy Russell vs. Hell’s Champion

Bradford Peverell vs. Leper Messiah

FOR THE FCW TAG TEAM TITLES

The Island Boys vs. Mass Effect ©

FOR THE FCW PEOPLE’S CHAMPIONSHIP

Matt Hocking © vs. Mutant

Sweet N’ Sour (Sensational Singh & Kirk Jameson) vs. Latino Kings (Rudy Velasquez & Hector Galindo)

Mainstream Hernandez vs. Boriken Love Machine Jr.

Carlos Gonzalez vs. El Mítico Jr.

SPECIAL LIVE BONUS MATCH

Jesus Chavez vs. Tex Tagan vs. Rob Reynolds vs. Joffy Laine

Sorry this is late- work got in the way. • 4 weeks later...
I know this went quiet weeks ago, but I will be posting the next show in a couple of days- I changed jobs and it ate into my gaming time so I didn't have the time to work on this much. Now I'm properly settled in I'm coming back to this, and hopefully I'll have enough done that the next show can go up before the weekend.
