BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

round 1 -- we are the #1 SEED and take on Charleston Southern

wow, we barely escape a first round defeat when Graber sinks a buzzer beater. 73-72. Pendleton 17, Graber 15, Gammon 10. Too close for comfort, not sure why our teams struggle in tournament play

round 2 -- vs Radford

much like the last game of the regular season, we overcome a halftime deficit to pull out the win. Graber 15, Gammon 13. GW wins 70-62

FINALS vs arch rival Winthrop

we face Winthrop in the finals. We are trying to displace them as the top dog in the Big South and this would be a good first step. Coach Strasser has won the tournament and taken his team to the NCAA's twice since coming over from UNC and he expects to make it 3 in a row. 46-40 halftime lead -- outside of one run, Winthrop was easily navigating our press so we may call the dogs off in the 2nd half and just play tough half court defense. Winthrop got the last run on us and we did not answer and go down in defeat once again, Winthrop 75-69 (as they hit 4 FT's to ice the game). Graber, Villa, and Kirkham score 11 pts, but were silenced in the 2nd half.

we are a 3 seed in the South region of the NIT> first round game is #6 Fordham. Maryland is the #1 seed, and San Diego is the 2 seed. Fordham was 4th in the Atlantic 10. (20-13)

NCAA top seeds:

West = Duke, Purdue, Nebraska, Utah.

Midwest: Creighton, Texas, Pitt, Wake Forest/

South: North Carolina, Tennessee, Villanova, Texas Tech/

East: Virgina, Louisville, Cal, Vandy

Creighton was the surprise, going 30-3 in the Missouri Valley. Tennessee (28-6) was ranked #1 in the top 25, but only get a 2 seed in the tournament (UVA was ranked 7th)

NIT

First round match vs Fordham

game goes down to the wire. We trailed at the half and battled back the whole game. Fordham missed their FT's and Graber hits from 3. GW wins 73-72. Graber has 23 points and 7 rebounds. Support came from Dietz and Weigand with 11.

2) Gardner Webb vs San Diego

we blow a 5 minute down the stretch and see San Diego go ahead with a minute to go. They miss the FT and we score to force overtime.

Deitz puts us by 3 with a trey at the 2 minute mark. SD cuts into and retakes the lead - we get the ball inside for a score and the 1 point lead with just under a minute to go. Time-out and let's set the defense. They miss a 3 against our man to man, and we make 1 FT. final score 81-79 and we advance. Elwood scores 15 for the star of the game. Graber only played 9 minutes before fouling out (we need a better performance out of him). Gammon and Dietz add 11 for us,.

round 3 will be against Maryland

season wrap-up

I win the Big South coach of the year. We put Antone Palmer on the all freshman team. Villa, Pendleton, and Graber make the 2nd team all Big South. Roscoe Wiegand is the first team PG.

Big South did not have a banner year recruiting. Radford was tops in the league, ranked #149 overall. GW is second and ranked #177

When Smallwood comes to campus, he's not as good a ball handler as our scouting reports indicated. Makes me wonder how long I need to keep our scout on payroll - however, I notice his skills improve 8 places to 50. Not bad for our conference, so we will stay put for now. He seems to be growing into the job. (I know I'm not going to find anyone better on our budget). Plus, maybe we can develop him and the other players to max out their potential.

Our out of conference schedule for the 2016-2017 season:

Arkansas Pine-Bluff

at Weber State

Longwood

at Alabama

at George Washintgon

at Clemson

at Bradley

at Detroit

Holy Cross

Mercer

South Carolina

We whiffed on a couple game requests, and was pleased that South Carolina called us agreeing to come to our campus for a game! We don't get many power conference teams coming to town, so we expect a standing room only crowd for that one! We have a killer road trip in the middle then return home to face a team coached by a GW favorite son -- former coach Lee Manning who gets much credit for building this program is now the coach of Holy Cross. We can expect a huge crowd for that one too. Athletic Dept can expect to bring in some cash this year (as we will also get a good payday from trips to Bama and Clemson, etc).

Stat Watch

Dryer (1894) and Dinh passed Hubbard on the all-time scoring list. Graber needs 604 points this year to get the top spot. Villa is on track to get the career rebounding record next year.

2016-17 season

Arkansas Pine-Bluff win 87-65

nice season opener, Graber scores 22 leading us to a 87-65 victory. Villa 15 pts / 6 rebounds. Gammon and freshman Richards add 11. Stat of the game, we had 18 steals (Graber had 8), forced 30 total turnovers while committing 13. 18 steals in one game is a Big South record (18th all time) 30 turnovers is the most in a game too

at Weber State win 76-64

Weigand is the star of the game with 17 pts, Dietz and Gammon add double digit support. Our steals were a more reasonable 8, and turnovers even at 15 apeice.

Longwood win 82-74

in a half of streaks, we hold a 3 pt lead at the break. Once again it comes down to Free throws and once again we iced it at the line. Final score 82-74 win. Weigand another star with 27 points. Freshman Taylor is earning his stripes, scoring 17. Villa 10 pts / 12 rebounds.

at Alabama win 97-70

WOW - this may not be as big a win as the one over Kentucky (in real life), but it ranks up there as the biggest win of my coaching career. We went into Tuscaloosa, jumped on them early and never let up. They have two 7 footers, so we stacked up a 2-3 on defense and ran, ran, ran on offense. Final score 97-70!! Weigand his 3rd star with 18 pts, Graber added 18, and Palmer put in 10. We got 12 steals and 26 turnovers while taking very good care of the ball. I'll take a win over an SEC team any day of the week - this is my first win over a power conference team after coming close a couple times

at George Washintgon win 82-72

battle of GW -- we trail early, when we're cold from 3 pt land, so we start pounding the ball inside to Villa and it helps us to win by 10 - 82-72. Villa 25 pts and 12 rebounds for the star. Deitz scores 17. Graber and Wiegand add 10.

at Clemson win 82-75

Graber 18 first half points leads us to a 10 pt lead at the break. 82-75 final score - another big win for the program. Graber is the star with 22 pts. Our post players were ineffective and we were out rebounded 49-33

we start the season 6-0 with a couple HUGE wins for the program.

5 more tough out of conference games before Big South play begins.

Congrats on your dynasty. I don't know how long you've been playing this game but its a great one. I've been playing it for about 2 years now off and on and my opinion is to stay at GW till you get the offer you want form the power conference. Your coaching stats will still improve with successful seasons and you can build your team your way. Also be careful not to take the first job at a major conference. Make sure its a good opportunity like spending/roster/etc... Just my two sense. Again congrats and I'll be checking in every now and then.

I played the demo a few times before finally buying the game and starting a legacy earlier this year. My first was with home town team Missouri State and it was very successful (back to back 30 win seasons - couple big time local fans said they were going to talk to the AD about hiring me, lol), so then I started this one with a "bottom feeder" team. I simmed off a few years to build up some history and then wait to see what team might offer a rookie coach. Gardner Webb was kind enough to that team and I want to stick around long enough to reward them for their gamble.

Chances are I'll opt for a mid-major team first when the time is right (just to keep building some experience -- so far, my coaching stats have not improved any).. My goal is to get GW to their first ever NCAA invite. We've had some good teams but always struggle in the conference tournament. Off to a good start this year, so who knows......

thanks for following along and appreciate the comments and feedback!!

at Bradley loss 64-92

no denying this team is on fire and we are rewarded with a #22 ranking. HOWEVER, We fell behind by 20, battled back to within 9, then crashed. Bradley wins 92-64. Graber scores 20; Villa 14.

at Detroit win 90-80

50-50 halftime score. Villa had 19 in the first. GW pulls away in the 2nd and holds off Detroit's late charge. Final score 90-80. Villa finishes with 26 pts and 13 rebounds for the POTG. Gammon adds 15.

Holy Cross win 76-72

big game as former coach Lee Manning returns to campus - the fans give him a nice applause then begin to rip on his team. We trail by 5 at the half. Another second half battle that we win at the free throw line (15 of 19). Final score a 76-72 win for the bulldogs. Wiegand is the star with 23 pts. Villa adds 11. We kept running fresh legs at them and it paid off at the end.

Mercer win 82-72

close game until the end and they had to foul. We sank the FT's to ice the game 82-72. 18 pts for Castel who was our star. We forced Mercer into 16 turnovers (we had 9)

South Carolina loss 66-79

we got killed on the boards (45-25) and all their 2nd chance points broke our backs. Final score lose 66-79. Graber had 12 pts, Villa and Kirkham 11. This should bring our team back to earth after a good "preseason" (9-2 heading into conference play). Bad news for this game is Claude Trott blows his Achilles Tendon -- he is elgible for a medical redshirt. We drop to #11 in the Mid-Major poll (and no longer receiving any votes in the top 25)

we end the OOC schedule with an impressive 9-2 record.

Recruiting News

We sign 3 star PG Charlie Chee out of Florida. He is #413 overall and #101 at PG. Avg 15 pts and 4 assist per game in HS. A+ 3 pt shot (63) and B rated ball handler (45 would make him one of our best right now if he comes in as good as advertised)

High Point win 81-71

we expected an easy game against the 3-7 High Point, but trailed by 10 early. Some in game adjustments and we take a 1 pt halftime lead. We extend the lead in the 2nd and win by 10. (81-71). Weigand had 22 pts and 6 rebounds for the star of the game. Villa with a double/double (12 pts/11 rebounds). Lot of players saw action and contributed. The major adjustment of the game was dialing back our 3 pt attempts because we were shooting abysmal ( end up 23% for the game after missing the first 6 ).

Radford win 52-31

3-6 Radford has played a pretty tough schedule. Their 7 footer always gives us trouble in the paint. He disrupted and blocked a few shots, but we took our time and salted away a 52-31 victory (it was 32-19 at the half). Villa star of the game with 11 pts and 15 rebounds. We only shot 15% from 3 pt and 33% FT's (overall 40%). We didn't have our usual shooting touch, but showed we can win playing good defense too (we have 2nd best defensive percents for FG and 3 pt shooting in the Big South. That paid off big today). Kirkham was 0-6 shooting but he had 6 assists and some good defensive stops. This is the all-time record for fewest points allowed by a GW team.

at VMI win 107-82

Gammon came off the bench to lead us with 22 pts and 8 rebounds. Villa 16 pts / 9 rebounds. one negative from the game is we got out-rebounded 51-39 (too many second chances for them - didn't matter since we were shooting so well, but could hurt in a closer game). Interesting stat: we go from allowing the fewest pts in a game (defense) to our highest scoring game ever (offense). We have really built a nice well-rounded team here.

at Liberty loss 63-75

Lose 63-75 despite Villa scoring 20 and grabbing 10 rebounds. Historically, Liberty has more wins over GW than any other team (8) and one of only 2 conference teams with a winning record against us (along with Winthrop). Needless to say, I'll drive that point when they visit us later in the season. The loss knocks us from 8th to 16th in Mid-Major poll. I hope it helps the team to focus better and not be thinking about a cake walk thru the conference any more

Presbyterian win 89-70

Weigand is the star with 16 pts and 9 rebounds. Graber, Villa, and Phillips also in double digits.

Winthrop win 96-92

This was a battle the entire game. We fought from behind with Villa on the bench with 4 fouls, and the adjustments we made turned the tide in our favor. They miss 3 straight shots down the stretch and we convert each time; then Kirkham and Gammon hit their FT's to ice it for us! Star of the game is Gammon with 25 pts and 6 rebounds

We move to #10 in the Mid-Major poll with this victry

at Charleston Southern win 87-71

Gammon makes his first start after some good scoring the last couple games - he responds with 27 pts and 9 rebounds as we erase an early 12 pt deficit to win 87-71. Graber added 19 pts.

at Coastal Carolina win 88-78

Gammon leads us with 19 pts / 5 rebounds. Graber gets star of the game though with 15 pts / 6 rebounds. Elwood 10 pts off the bench

UNC Asheville win 83-75

30 fouls called in the first half - 20 against us. WE just seemed to go thru the motions in the 2nd half and coast to a 83-75 win.

Liberty win 83-77

Liberty has hit a skid losing their last 3 games to fall down to 4th place. WE jump on them early and build a 45-30 halftime lead. More good news we only commit 6 fouls to their 15!! (running the stadium steps maybe paying off),. Liberty battled back to tie the game, but Gammon nails a pair of treys to end their rally, and give us the win.

VMI win 88-80

another tight game that we win down the stretch 88-80. Graber is the star with 22 pts, Villa 11 pts / 9 rebounds

at Winthrop loss 84-94

We fell behind early as nothing seemed to work. We clawed back to make a game of it, but foul trouble did us in (Villa picked up 3 quick fouls, and Pascal got T'ed up after hitting a triple to give us a brief lead in the 2nd half -- we self destructed after that. Graber led us with 19 pts (Villa held to 4 pts in his 15 minutes) -- and as a result they dominated 50-29 on the boards).

10-2 in Big South play, tied for first place with Winthrop

at Presbyterian win 92-74 nice bounce back win, but it wasn't pretty. Final score 92-74. Weigand is the star with 17 points. Deitz 18, Graber 14, Philips 12. Villa 7 pts / 11 rebounds. Winthrop turns around and loses to UNC Asheville to put us alone atop the standings again.

Coastal Carolina win 86-78

what a half- Coastal scores the first 10 pts and we call time out to regroup. We score the next 10 to tie the game. From there we pull ahead for a 53-40 lead as we found our shooting touch halfway thru. 2nd half is a shoot out between our Gammon (22 pts) and their L:a Rosa (20) - Gammon won the shoot out and we won the game 86-78. Graber 10 pts, Villa 10 rebounds / 7pts to supplement Gammon

Charleston Southern win 74-64

Villa 16 pts/12 rebounds led the team but Palmer is named the star with 11 pts/9 rebounds while holding their center to 3 pts. It was Villa's 7th double double of the season which is tops in the Big South

at UNC Asheville loss 50-72

we did not come to play and trail by 20 at the break. Nothing seems to slow down their attack and we cannot buy a bucket/ final score loss 50-72. Kind of game you just want to burn the tape. Graber 13 pts, Weigan 10. Our leading rebounder was Palmer with 4. We lost the battle of the boards 43-28 and shot a dismal 31% for the game (only 58% from the charity stripe).

at High Point win 81-72

Villa 17 pts and 11 rebounds for the star of the game (his 6th)

at Radford win 80-72

Graber 22 pt

Once again we win the conference regular season title and have the #1 seed heading into the conference tourney.

I will go back and research your teams and see what goodies I can find for you

BIG SOUTH TOURNAMENT

Gardner Webb vs High Point

we meet the 8 seed High Point in the first game. UNC Asheville, the team that blew us out does (and also beat Winthrop) not make the top 8 teams - go figure). We struggled early but then found our groove for a 44-30 halftime lead. All 6 post players picked up 2 fouls in the first half (Villa had 6 pts in the 4 minutes he played). Lots of whistles though as both teams had 12 fouls. WE come out cold and High Point rallies to take the lead at the 12 minute mark. Villa and Palmer both pick up their 3rd foul. What was a comfortable HT lead turns into an embarrassing first round exit. 74-86. The surprise of the game for us was freshman guard Antone Taylor who scored 18 pts and 3 assists. Villa had 6 pts and 8 rebounds before fouling out

High Point loses to 6 seed Liberty in the finals

A Look at the history of other teams:

LSU -- Richard Morgan has been their coach since I started the sim in 2010. They were .500 in first 2 years, then 3 straight 20 win seasons. This earned them an NIT 3rd round, NIT 4th place, and round of 32 in NCAA. One SEC championship and 1 NBA draft pick. The next 2 years saw them struggle again. career record 142-95.

current (next) season is 2017 and they are 11-2 so the future looks bright.

BOISE STATE -- career record 108-125; 0-2 in the NIT, Won the WAC the last 2 years and coach Brown was hired away by Xavier and he took the entire staff with him (at the end of this year -- I'm played a little ahead so you get to see the future).

They replaced their coach this year with Kirk Woolard. He was an Asst at St Joes, Wyoming, Northern Iowa, and Oregon. As an Asst, his teams have been to post season 4 of 7 years. He is 4-8 in current season so he has some work to do.

NCAA Seeds

West UCLA, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Michigan State

Midwest NC State, OK State, Purdue, Xavier

South Louisville, Wake Forest, Arkansas, Texas Tech

East Pitt, Tennessee, Temple, UNC

We are 2 seed in the NIT and face Alabama State in the first game. Delaware in the top seed in our bracket. Winthrop is the #1 seed in the CBI. Coastal Carolina is #6 in the 4IT

Gardner Webb vs Alabama State

fast paced game and lead changed hands several times. 46-45 lead at the break. Villa, Graber, and Weigand all pick up the 3rd foul in the first 2 minutes of the 2nd half. Shortly after we fall behind by 6. With 8 minutes to go, we tie the game back up. At that point Villa, Weigand, and Graber each pick up their 4th foul and return to the bench,. When they return, Villa promptly fouls out, but we regain the lead and hold onto a 82-80 victory. Gammon 21 pts, Graber 14. Gammon was also our leading rebounder 9, and assist man (3) to easily win star of the game honors - Miami is next

GW vs Miami

we had a 10 pt lead most of the first half, but a late rally by the Canes give them a 40-39 lead at the break. 2nd half is a dogfight with 13 lead changes. We took a 1 pt lead with a minute to go. Our 2-3 zone forces a bad shot - they foul and we sink them both to win 77-74. four players in double figures, Weigand was the star with 14, also Villa, Graber, and Phillips. Villa also had 12 rebounds (his 10th double/double of the season, tops in the Big South and #25 in the nation)

GW at #4 Seton Hall

Seton Hall was 21-11 (10-8 in the tough Big East). Their leading scorer is injured, but they had a balanced attack so he is not as critical as Graber is to us. Villa, Graber, and Weigand all score 18 pts, Villa gets the star of the game (9 rebounds and 3 assists also lead the team) as GW pulls an upset 86-76

In the NCAA< #15 San Diego State upset #2 Texas A&M, and #16 Santa Clara knocked off top seed Pitt (a #1 seed has lost every year).

NIT FINAL ROUND in New York has #8 Loyola Marymount vs #5 Murray State, and #2 Gardner Webb vs #3 New Mexico. I like our chances if we can get past a tough New Mexico team

They had a signature win over #19 Utah earlier in the year. 22-10 (10-6). They finished 3rd in the Mountain West behind Utah and UNLV. In the NIT they beat Western Carolina 72-54, Providence 76-64, and James Madison 93-87. They love to shoot the 3, so the 2-3 that helped us against the bigger teams in the tournament might be a detriment if they get hot.

38-38 tie at halftime. We built a little lead, but it was tied again with 5 minutes left. Looks like it may go down to the wire - we have a 3 pt lead with a minute left. Kirkham hits his FT's and we jump into a man to man defense which disrupts their 3 pt attempts. final score 84-78 victory.. Both teams had 17 turnovers - it was our shooting that won the game for us (9 of 27 threes vs 5 of 22 for them. We also made 10 more FT's than they did. Gammon won the star of the game with 17 pts, sparking our early rally in the 2nd half. Villa 18 pts, and Kirkham & Weigand add 10. Graber held to 5 pts due to early foul trouble. WE face Murray State from the OVC in the finals
