Comité Internacional de Lucha Libre: Gimme Some Lucha

The Lucha Round-Up

September 2014

With El Día Nacional De Lucha coming up we’ll be taking a look at the rosters of each of Mexico’s major promotions. First up is Comité Internacional de Lucha Libre, one of Mexico’s most notable independent promotions. Based out of Yucatán, the CILL is essentially a smaller version of the legendary OLLIE; a traditional, old-school lucha fed with over-the-top Tecnicos, cartoonishly villainous Rudos and an emphasis on sporting competition rather than intricate storylines- essentially, they’re kind of a Mexican version of MAW or NYCW (or Ring of Fire, for those of you with a passion for obscure British wrestling feds). The company’s also noted as the second Mexican promotion to join The Confederation of The Territories, having joined up at the back end of June.

As for the roster, it’s an interesting mix of established lucha stars, young up-and-coming talent and the occasional cast-off from SOTBPW. Chances are our American readers won’t recognise most of the big names in the company; several of them won’t even work in the States, and those that do haven’t been seen over here in quite a while.

Los Tecnicos

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/AmazingFireFly_zpsd5e48252.jpg

Amazing Fire Fly

Age: 23 Billed From: Monterrey, Nuevo León

Finisher: Sky High Fire Fly (Corkscrew Shooting Star Press)

Trained by SOTBPW star Axxis Jr, Fire Fly’s had a pretty fair 2014- having started out as a lower-card jobber, he’s gradually established himself as a solid part of the midcard, and his recently formed tag team with Fray Valiente Jr could help round out a tag division that’s become a little heel-heavy. It probably helps that Fire Fly’s one of the most spectacular fliers in the company, with a solid technical base to boot. Expect good things from Fire Fly, particularly if he gets a chance to challenge for the Mexican Title.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/Boom-BoomJamaica_zps1e9e1bbc.jpg

Boom-Boom Jamaica

Age: 23 Billed From: Kingston, Jamaica

Finisher: Drop the Boom (Jumping Double Leg Drop)

Boom-Boom came across to CILL after leaving South of the Border, and has so far performed well without ever really making much of a mark. He lost three straight matches in a row, and whilst that hasn’t harmed his popularity or momentum any it does have to be said that it’s hard to believe in him as a serious world title contender at the moment. Still, he’s a fine all-round worker with charisma to spare, and his win over El Pavo Real last month should hopefully see him move back towards title contention.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/DragoacutenDelArcoIris_zps55fb3ce6.jpg

Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr

Age: 28 Billed From: Mexico City

Finisher: Dragón Driver 07 (Michinoku Driver II)

One of a number of guys hovering between CILL’s main event and its midcard, Dragón has very solid fundamentals but has mostly been used as a gatekeeper to the main event, losing to top stars whilst picking up enough wins in the opening slot to keep him broadly credible. It’s hard to say why that is- certainly there’s no suggestion of backstage trouble or any kind of dispute with CILL’s booker El Tiburón- but at a guess I’d say that Dragón’s simply been a victim of CILL’s top-heavy roster and has been shunted down to make room for other fast-rising stars. In any case, he can always be counted on to deliver so I don’t see him going anywhere else soon.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElJaguar_zps4251187f.jpg

El Jaguar (One half of the CILL World Tag Team Champions)

Age: 24 Billed From: Cancún, Quintana Roo

Finisher: Jaguar Suplex (German Suplex)

El Jaguar has shot up the card ever since he claimed the tag team titles, with a series of big wins and quality performances that have cemented him and his partner as key parts of the CILL roster. It helps that he ticks all of Tiburón’s boxes, being a flashy high flier with a solid technical base, but it’s also worth pointing out that Los Gatos Salvajes are one of the few really experienced tag teams in the company, and that’s definitely helped them climb up the rankings.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/FallenAngel_zps0980da99.jpg

Fallen Angel

Age: 38 Billed From: Mérida, Yucatán

Finisher: Heaven’s Gates (Gory Special)

Without really losing or being de-pushed, Fallen Angel has gradually drifted down the card from the top of the main event and is now settled into a midcard veteran role. It’s probably down to his age- the former Daniel Cano has started to show signs of slowing down- but I wouldn’t read too much into it; with his brother holding the World Championship and their tag team one of the most dependable in CILL Angel will always have a slot in the main event if he wants it.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/FrayValiente_zpsf0bf7e85.jpg

Fray Valiente Jr

Age: 23 Billed From: San Pablo de las Salinas, Estado de México

Finisher: Valiente Splash (450 Splash)

Although he’s yet to win a match, Fray Valiente has proved to be a surprisingly popular lower-card worker for CILL. Admittedly he bumps better than anyone else in the company, and his working-for-an-orphanage gimmick makes him very easy to cheer, but it still has to be acknowledged that Valiente is well set up for a big push next year. He’s currently teamed up with Amazing Fire Fly, and if that team works well it should just about double Valiente’s chances of moving up the card.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/Rapido_zps80ce77de.jpg

Rapido (Current CILL Mexican Openweight Champion)

Age: 21 Billed From: San Francisco de Campeche, Campeche

Finisher: Rapido Knee (Running Single Leg High Knee)

Although he’s the current Mexican Champion, Rapido’s fortunes this year have been somewhat mixed. True, he’s in the midst of his first ever title run, but he’s struggled to get the crowd behind him for much of the year and has been somewhat starved of quality opposition in the midcard. Still, he’s improved across the last few months, the crowd’s antipathy towards him has died down, and hopefully CILL’s midcard issues can be resolved by the end of the year.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/SnakeKing_zpse005e2d9.jpg

Snake King (Current CILL World Openweight Champion)

Age: 29 Billed From: Mérida, Yucatán

Finisher: Snake-Bite (Diving Somersault Seated Senton)

Formerly known as Javier Cano, Snake King arrived in CILL at the start of this year and has really made an impact, remaining undefeated the whole year and capturing the World Championship last month from Diamante Negro. It’s not hard to see why; although he’s not the flashiest or most technical worker, Snake King has the soundest fundamentals in just about the whole company. It’s also worth mentioning that he does have a very cool mask, which does count for a surprising amount.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/SodaDelaUva_zpsd90aecc2.jpg

Soda De La Uva Jr.

Age: 22 Billed From: Saltillo, Coahuila

Finisher: Grape Press (Diving Cross Body)

A very promising young rookie, Soda’s performed well in the year or so he’s been with CILL but has yet to move off the bottom of the card. He’s rarely deliver a bad match, and his last couple of matches in particular have hinted at big things to come from him, but on the whole I wouldn't expect Soda De La Uva to receive all that much of a push for at least a couple of years.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/TigreSalvaje_zpsc4ef2676.jpg

Tigre Salvaje Jr (One Half of the CILL World Tag Team Champions)

Age: 28 Billed From: Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua

Finisher: Salvaje Suplex (Snap Double Underhook Suplex), Tigre Roll (Wheelbarrow Victory Roll)

One of CILL’s best, Tigre’s had a bit of a banner year. Capturing the World Tag Team Titles for a record-breaking third time and climbing into the main event, Tigre’s settled in as one of the company’s top tecnicos. The key thing going forward will be seeing how well he can handle the pressure of being in the main event; granted, there’s some quality opposition for him, particularly in the tag division, but that’s no guarantee that Tigre will be able to deliver.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/WildfireBlaze_zpsd36fe411.jpghttp://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/WildfireInferno_zpscd010951.jpg

Wildfire Blaze & Wildfire Inferno- The Wildfires

Ages: 37 & 32 Billed From: Mexico City

Finishers: Scorched Earth (Samoan Drop, Blaze), Heat Blast (Spear, Inferno), Fire Bomb (Doomsday Device, Double Team)

CILL’s veteran tag team, the Wildfires have largely been positioned as a solid midcard unit under Tiburón’s regime. They’ve won more than they’ve lost, and generally they’ve only lost to top guys or rising stars, but on the other hand neither man has received a great deal of focus or attention in 2014. Whether or not that will change is hard to say, but clearly Tiburón values their contribution.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/EstrellaBlanca_zps64fe7c63.jpg

Estrella Blanca (Current CILL World Luchadoras Champion)

Age: 26 Billed From: Tijuana, Baja California

Finisher: Northern Lights Suplex

The only multiple-time Women’s champion in CILL history, Estrella Blanca tends to win the title whenever CILL don’t have another idea, and her victory at the annual six-way ladder match in May smacked of lack of imagination on the company’s part. Not that Blanca doesn’t deserve the title- she’s easily the best worker in the division- but her perennial hold on the title has gotten in the way of other tecnicos developing into serious title contenders.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/CatalinaVazquez_zpsd072ba51.jpg

Catalina Vasquez

Age: 20 Billed From: Guadalajara, Jalisco

Finisher: Flying Bulldog

The youngest member of the roster, Catalina’s inexperience continues to show in her scrappy, rough-edged performances and struggles to get the crowd to warm to her. Given her age there’s every chance Cat will improve and sort out her problems in the same way that Rapido has done, but the pressure is on for her and it’s debatable how long El Tiburón and El Maestro will wait.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/TeresaPerez_zps85e133e8.jpg

Teresa Perez

Age: 24 Billed From: Victoria de Durango, Durango

Finisher: Around the World Armbar (La Mistica)

One of two new luchadoras brought in at the start of the year, Teresa’s a replacement for Pinky Perez. In all honesty she’s nowhere near as good, but is reportedly much easier to deal with behind the scenes, and to be fair she’s managed to deliver consistently decent matches.

Los Rudos

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/BorderPatrol_zps5afeb037.jpghttp://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElJefeMilitar_zpsff39213f.jpg

Border Patrol II & El Jefe Militar- Las Fuerzas Armadas

Ages: 23 & 26 Billed From: Brownsville, Texas, America & Mexico City

Finishers: Crossing The Border (Springboard Moonsault, Border Patrol II), Brainbuster (El Jefe Militar)

Probably one of CILL's most junior heel teams, Las Fuerzas Armadas came together at the start of the year and have been firmly established as the designated rudo jobber team. That’s probably a fair reflection of their talent- although neither man is particularly bad they're not great workers. El Jefe in particular has struggled to win over the crowd, though that’s probably due to his lack of aerial offence and reliance of American-style brawling.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/DiamanteNegro_zps9daeac67.jpg

Diamante Negro

Age: 36 Billed From: Los Angeles, California, America

Finisher: Diamond Stud (Frog Splash)

The last CILL World Champion, Diamante Negro’s been hit hard by time decline this year as his age and experience caught up to him. He’s not the only one who’s seen some decline- Fallen Angel is also noticeable less sharp than he was at the start of the year- but Diamante’s always relied on his spectacular offense to make up for his inconsistency and without that same ability he’s become more exposed, particularly in the later stages of his title run. He has an experienced tag team with El Sultán, however, and as part of the dominant Los Reyes del Universo trio Diamante will likely linger around the upper reaches of the card for some time yet.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElPavoReal_zps3db4ed19.jpg

El Pavo Real

Age: 33 Billed From: Xalapa, Veracruz

Finisher: Thousand Eye Thunder (Diving Splash)

A perennial top star for CILL, El Pavo Real has continued his run at the top through 2014. One third of Los Reyes del Universo and partnered up with El Sultán in El Elite, Pavo Real’s delivered so consistently that it’s easy to forget that he’s actually lost all but two of his matches this year. That’s largely been so the tecnico side of the roster could be built up, so expect him to make a comeback in the last quarter of this year and into 2015- and no, I don’t expect him to drop out of the main event any time soon.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElSerpiente_zps720ad044.jpghttp://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/CVFP_MaskedMale_119_zpsa4d4bb2d.jpghttp://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/MonkeyMan_zps52e71da0.jpg

El Serpiente, El Tiburón and Monkey Man- El Reino Animal

Ages: 24, 25 & 24 Billed From: Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche (El Serpiente), Rocha, Uruguay (El Tiburón), Villahermosa, Tabasco (Monkey Man

Finishers: Boa Squeeze (Sleeper Hold, Serpiente, Secondary), Cobra Twist (Corkscrew Moonsault, Serpiente), Shark Attack (Ranhei, Tiburón), King of the Swingers (Spinning Chokebomb, Monkey Man)

El Reino Animal have rapidly established themselves as one of the most tight-knit trios in CILL, with the group regularly featuring in tag and trios matches on just about every show. That might simply be because El Tiburón is also CILL’s head booker, but in fairness Serpiente’s largely been the one to receive the big singles push despite persistent rumours of tension between himself and Tiburón backstage. In any case, all three members of the team have stood out as consistently good performers, and their futures in CILL seem secure.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElSultaacuten_zps4a735dcc.jpg

El Sultán

Age: 25 Billed From: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Finisher: Camel Clutch

The final third of Los Reyes del Universo, El Sultán is probably one of the best young prospects in CILL. Already one of the company’s strongest technical wrestlers, Sultán’s also at home in the air or in the brawl, and his teams with Diamante Negro and El Pavo Real have helped cement him as a top-level prospect. His only problem is his tendency to act as the fall guy, eating the pinfall or submission whenever Los Reyes need to lose.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/Hypnotiq_zps7a14a2e3.jpg

Hypnotiq Jr

Age: 26 Billed From: Pachuca, Hidalgo

Finisher: El Hipnotismo (La Magistral)

Following his defeat of the outgoing Magik in April Hypnotiq’s become one of CILL’s top stars. A loose confederate of Los Reyes del Universo, Hypnotiq’s done a decent enough job but has yet to really deliver a proper main-event level match. That’s probably due to simple inexperience- he’s the greenest of all CILL’s top stars- and with more seasoning and work in the ring he’s likely to improve.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/AztecPrince_zps526e4ba4.jpg

Incan Warrior

Age: 23 Billed From: Huancayo, Peru

Finisher: Triple Powerbomb

Incan Warrior (formerly known as Aztec Prince; he was renamed after the CILL booking team realised that the Aztecs never went to South America) has suffered somewhat from the change in booking regimes. At the start of the year he was the CILL Mexican Champion, only to lose the belt in January to Rapido and then spend the rest of the year lurking around the lower fringes of the midcard. It’s entirely to his credit, therefore, that he’s consistently delivered good matches and worked his way back into looking like a solid prospect rather than simple job-fodder. It’s worth pointing out, however, that he remains atrocious at selling moves, and will likely need to improve that before he’s allowed near the main event.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/RagnarTheViking_zps0e774541.jpghttp://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/UhtredTheViking_zpsd1cade94.jpg

Ragnar The Viking & Uhtred the Viking- The Viking Warriors

Ages: 21 & 28 Billed From: Scandinavia

Finishers: Viking Big Boot (Running Big Boot, Ragnar), The Odin Slam (Reverse Powerbomb, Uhtred), Hammer of Thor (Aided Superbomb, Double Team)

The Viking Warriors are one of CILL’s veteran tag teams, and held the tag team titles up until April, a reign that was successful without ever really being inspiring. That’s mostly down to Ragnar and Uhtred’s individual weaknesses; although they’re a strong team neither man is a great individual wrestler. Both men are intense, it’s true, but that’s counterbalanced by a multitude of weaknesses in psychology and consistency.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/JaguarQueen_zps6c098fb7.jpg

Jaguar Queen

Age: 26 Billed From: Cancún, Quintana Roo

Finisher: Jaguar Suplex (German Suplex)

The largest woman on the CILL roster, Jaguar Queen’s shown steady improvement over 2014 and is increasingly looking a future World Women’s Champion. She’s still not a great wrestler by any means, but improvement has spiced up her aerial offence and given her a vital second dimension to her work. This year also finally saw her link to El Jaguar revealed, with the revelation that they were trained by the same man (though exactly who that was hasn’t been revealed).

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/PoisonIvy_zpsb1b1637e.jpg

Poison Ivy

Age: 26 Billed From: Culiacán, Sinaloa

Finisher: Venus Fly-Trap (Octopus Hold)

Estrella’s predecessor as CILL World Women’s Champion, Poison Ivy has had a good 2014, delivering solid matches and improving on her weaknesses throughout the course of the year so far. Exactly why she lost the belt isn’t clear- certainly there don't seem to have been any issues with her performance- but it hasn't really slowed her down any, and she remains the number one contender to the title.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/PurpleViper_zps8d8cee66.jpg

Purple Viper

Age: 30 Billed From: Hermosillo, Sonora

Finisher: Viper Bite (Moonsault Double Knee Drop)

If you said that Purple Viper was the best wrestler in the CILL Women’s Division I’d probably agree with you. Certainly her fundamentals are the best in the whole company, and she’s a good all-round worker with aerial skills. You have to bet on Viper taking the title off of Estrella Blanca, though given that she literally just lost a title match last month it probably won’t be any time soon.

Non-Wrestlers

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/VictorFernandez_zpsfac5288c.jpg

Victor Fernandez

CILL’s lead announcer, Victor’s fairly typical of your average lucha libre announcer. His delivery is rather more conversational than is usual for Mexican announcers, reflecting his background in talk radio, but he’s good for details and is a good fit for CILL’s product.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElMaestro_zpsae0fa6e3.jpg

El Maestro

CILL’s owner and colour commentator, Maestro does a good job providing the energy that Victor’s style doesn't always provide. He’s not always as good on the analysis or background knowledge you might expect a colour commentator to provide, but with Fernandez around that’s less of an issue.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/AntoniaAndres_zps0c9ed833.jpg

Antonia Andres

Diamante Negro’s valet, Antonia isn’t really given much to do in the match-focussed environment of CILL beyond accompanying Negro to the ring. Chances are she’ll be kept on the books, though, not least because valets are a good way of identifying CILL's big stars.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/MercedesGimenez_zpsbad0d936.jpg

Mercedes Gimenez

Currently managing Los Gatos Salvajes, Mercedes is a veteran valet and pretty decent mic worker to boot. Again, she’s not given a huge amount to do in CILL’s match-driven environment, but I wouldn’t expect her to leave anytime soon.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/MateoIglesias_zpsd166f8c4.jpg

Mateo Iglesias

CILL’s road agent, El Maestro’s made it clear more than once how big a part of CILL Mateo is and exactly how much he contributes to the show. For that reason if nothing else Iglesias is a fixture in CILL, and given the amount he contributes to matches he’s very much an important part of the CILL machine.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/OzLord_zps04a6d930.jpghttp://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/EstebanFerrer_zps43cd59b5.jpg

Oz Lord and Esteban Ferrer

CILL’s refereeing team, Oz and Ferrer do a good job and are very much a part of the CILL furniture by now.

Los Cruzados vs. Las Fuerzas Armadas

Los Cruzados defeated Las Fuerzas Armadas in 6:46 by two straight falls. Fray Valiente Jr took the first fall with a quick roll-up on Border Patrol II, with the final fall happening when Amazing Fire Fly defeated El Jefe Militar by pinfall with a Sky High Fire Fly.

Booker’s Thoughts: This was a decent match, given our size and what these guys are capable of. The crowd have finally stopped being so down on Jefe, and whilst Fray was off form tonight the teamwork covered for that. Also, the Sky High Fire Fly is a dead cert for any highlight video we ever put together.

Purple Viper & Jaguar Queen vs. Catalina Vasquez & Teresa Perez

Purple Viper and Jaguar Queen defeated Catalina Vazquez and Teresa Perez in 10:06 by two straight falls. The first fall saw Jaguar Queen pin Catalina with the Jaguar Suplex, with the final fall happening when Purple Viper defeated Teresa Perez by pinfall with a Viper Bite.

Booker’s Thoughts: The crowd still won’t get behind Cat, but as she’s dating El Jaguar we can't really get rid of her. Other than that, this wasn’t actually that bad.

Hypnotiq Jr. vs. Soda De La Uva Jr

Hypnotiq Jr defeated Soda De La Uva Jr in 7:05 by two straight falls. He won the first fall by submission with an armbar and the second by pinfall with an El Hipnotismo.

Booker’s Thoughts: I’d forgotten that these two have bad chemistry, so this was the worst match so far (and hopefully of the night). Hypnotiq’s poor psychology also dragged this one down- I think I made a mistake putting him over Magik, he’s not really ready for a top slot. On the plus side, I rejigged Soda’s gimmick to something more Happy-Go-Lucky, and the crowd liked it.

Rapido vs. El Serpiente

Rapido defeated El Serpiente in 9:32 at two falls to one. Rapido won the first fall with a sunset flip before El Serpiente took the second fall by submission with the Boa Twist. The final fall saw Rapido win by pinfall with a Rapido Knee. Rapido makes defence number 5 of his CILL Mexican Openweight Championship title.

Booker’s Thoughts: Both Rapido and Serpiente were off form tonight, so this wasn't as good as it maybe could have been. I gave serious thought to working a title switch here, but Serpiente can be problematic backstage and I don’t want to encourage that kind of behaviour.

The Wildfires vs. The Viking Raiders

The Viking Raiders defeated The Wildfires in 9:42 by two straight falls. Uhtred the Viking won the first fall with The Odin Slam on Wildfire Blaze, whilst Ragnar The Viking defeated Wildfire Inferno for the second fall by rolling him up and leaning on the ropes for leverage.

Booker’s Thoughts: The Viking Raiders still aren’t popular with our crowd though they did both improve tonight, as did Wildfire Blaze. The Wildfires are due a bit of a rebuild soon, but with face champions I need the heel teams to look credible as challengers so this one went to the Raiders. Mind you, if they don't improve soon I may offload Uhtred and see if I can’t find a better partner for Ragnar.

Fallen Angel vs. Incan Warrior

Incan Warrior defeated Fallen Angel in 10:26 by two falls to one. Incan Warrior took the first fall with a flash roll-up, before Fallen Angel won the second fall via submission to the Heaven’s Gates. The final went to Incan Warrior via Triple Powerbomb after El Serpiente interfered and hit Fallen Angel with an illegal piledriver behind the referee’s back.

Booker’s Thoughts: Fallen Angel only let this one go after I booked him to look strong, which may not have been a good idea as it undercut the whole point of this match- namely, to set Warrior up as a legitimate threat to Rapido. It’s also worth pointing out that Warrior’s poor selling and inconsistency were also a problem here, though I'm willing to let that slide a bit.

Estrella Blanca vs. Poison Ivy

Estrella Blanca defeated Poison Ivy in 10:30 by two straight falls. The first fall was a victory by pinfall via a hurracanrana pin, whilst Estrella was able to take the second with a Northern Lights Suplex. Estrella Blanca makes defence number 3 of her CILL World Women's Championship title.

Booker’s Thoughts: After a couple of weak matches it was good to get back on form here. We're a little weak on faces in the women’s division, but Blanca can still get the job done and will likely hold the title at least a month or two longer whilst I shore up the rest of the division. As for Ivy, she’s improve a lot and can definitely hold up her end of a match.

Boom-Boom Jamaica & Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr vs. El Reino Animal Dos

Boom-Boom Jamaica and Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr defeated El Reino Animal Dos in 14:38 by two falls to one. Monkey Man won the first fall with a King of the Swingers on Boom-Boom Jamaica, only for Dragón to win the second fall with a Dragón Driver ’07 on El Tiburón. The final fall happened when Boom-Boom Jamaica defeated El Tiburón by pinfall with a Drop The Boom.

Booker’s Thoughts: Me and Monkey Man are good but inexperienced as a team, and in any case both Monkey Man and Boom-Boom Jamaica didn’t have the psychology to work a full 15-minute match. Everything still basically worked, but we need better from our main event crew.

Snake King & Los Gatos Salvajes vs. Los Reyes del Universo

Los Reyes del Universo defeated Snake King and Los Gatos Salvajes in 15:29 by two falls to one. El Pavo Real took the first fall with a crucifix pin on Tigre Salvaje Jr., whilst the second fall came when Snake King hit Diamante Negro with the Snake-bite. The final fall came when El Sultán defeated El Jaguar by submission with a Camel Clutch.

Booker’s Thoughts: This is more what I’d look for in a main event, though I'm not surprised it delivered. Diamante Negro is definitely the weak link here thanks to his time decline, but everyone else rose to the occasion admirably and delivered a good solid main event.

The Lucha Round-Up

October 2014:

In another of our annual traditions, it’s time for us to take a look back at the Día Nacional de Lucha shows and compare how each company’s performance stacks up. As always, and for the benefit of those of our readers who like to complain in the comments section, the comparisons are entirely relative; nobody really expects CILL to outperform MPWF or OLLIE, it’s about how they delivered compared to their usual baseline.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/EMLL_zps540b3245.jpg

EMLL: As usual, EMLL didn’t put on a show specifically for Día Nacional, instead going with their usual Thursday Night run-up show. Quality-wise, Mi Enemigo was at the good end of their usual level of quality- they can’t always hit that high a standard but with El Bandido and Snake King in the top two matches they were always going to deliver. As for their undercard, that continues to be a lot patchier- there are some strong workers on the EMLL roster but there are also plenty of weaker ones and the all one-on-one format exposes their weaknesses rather brutally.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/OLLIE_zps2241ca38.jpg

OLLIE: OLLIE are invested in Día Nacional de Lucha more than just about any other company in Mexico, and their contribution this year was probably one of the best they’ve ever put on. Headed up by a Nicolas Lopez/El Critico match, the card was up-and-down good, and as usually with OLLIE was built around classic, old-school lucha libre. In fact, it’s hard to really pin down any weaknesses in OLLIE’s performance- any criticisms you could make (the lack of classic tag or trios action is probably the biggest) was clearly a deliberate part of the show. OLLIE acknowledged it’s history and the traditions of Lucha Libre, but the unspoken message was clearly that OLLIE remains at the cutting edge of Mexican wrestling.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/MPWF_zpsd0c9e773.jpg

MPWF: MPWF’s offerings for Día Nacional have always been more about family fare and entertainment than strict match quality, and on those terms their offering this year was a good show. The matches were pretty consistently good, the main event (which pitched Heavy Metal Anarchy and Spanish Superfly against Genio Verde and Hombre De La Energia) saw the tecnicos win, and there was comparatively little storyline progression that a casual fan couldn’t follow. It’s true, nothing was especially fantastic, but that’s never been what this company’s about; everything was accessible and fun, and with that in mind MPWF’s offering was a good show.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL_zpsf8f34bd3.jpg

CILL: If OLLIE’s show was about acknowledging tradition whilst remaining contemporary then CILL’s contribution to El Día Nacional De Lucha Libre could have come straight out of the 70’s. Two thirds of the matches were classic multi-man stipulations like trios and tag team matches, and the action wouldn’t have looked out of place on an OLLIE show from ten or twenty years ago- and that’s not entirely a good thing. Now, to be fair nobody expects CILL to compete with the likes of OLLIE or the MPWF, but even so this kind of (admittedly very watchable) mediocrity doesn’t stand the company in great stead going forward- it was a good show, given their size, but if they can’t start improving soon there’s very little room for expansion left open to them.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/SOTBPW_zps40cd368e.jpg

SOTBPW: South of the Border may be somewhat controversial, with accusations of Sports Entertainment pandering and the unpopular brand extension, but it’s hard to argue with the quality of their contribution to this year’s Día Nacional. Headlined by Champagne Lover taking on Ultimate Phoenix for the Campeónato del Mundo and a sub-main featuring El Leon, Pablo Rodriguez and Mayan Idol, the card was not only their best Pay-Per-View of the year but also pulled in their second high buy rate, no mean feat given the way the economy’s going at the moment.

Having taken a look at how each of the shows stacked up individually, how does this year’s El Día Nacional De Lucha stack up in terms of the rankings? Well, overall, I’d give this about an 8/10, putting it third on the all-time rankings, as you can see below:

2008: 9.25

2007: 8.25

2014: 8

2006/2013: 7.75

2010: 7

2009/2011: 6.75

2012: 6.5

So, having see the rankings, what can we take away from them? Well, for one thing it’s clear that we’re still on an upward trend from the real nadir of 2012, with CILL and EMLL now actively contributing to the rankings rather than being dead weight and OLLIE and MPWF having finally adjusted to SOTBPW’s pillaging of top talent. As for whether or not this overall improvement will continue, it’s very hard to say- the smaller companies improved their contributions both last year and again this year, but as I’ve already said both EMLL and CILL have problems they need to address if they want to show real improvement in terms of show quality.

Sorry for the delay in posting the next show- I've had a few issues accessing my photobucket account to get the pictures. That's pretty much sorted, though, so the show will hopefully go up either tonight or tomorrow night.

El Reino Animal Tres vs. The Wildfires

The Wildfires defeated El Reino Animal Tres in 9:48 by two falls to one. El Serpiente took the first fall with the Cobra Twist on Wildfire Blaze, but Wildfire Inferno equalised a few minutes later with a Heat Blast on Monkey Man. The final occurred when Wildfire Blaze defeated El Serpiente by pinfall with a Fire Bomb.

Booker’s Thoughts: This was a pretty bog-standard level of match for our tag division. Wildfire Blaze and Monkey Man both showed some improvement, although it’s worth pointing out that Inferno was a touch inconsistent tonight and neither he nor Monkey Man seemed to be putting in as much effort as they could have.

El Tiburón vs. Soda De La Uva Jr.

El Tiburón defeated Soda De La Uva Jr. in 6:42 by two straight falls, winning the first fall with a crucifix pin and the final fall with a Shark Attack.

Booker’s Thoughts: Against an opponent he doesn't have bad chemistry with Soda was able to turn in a much better match, and whilst I wouldn't call this a classic it wasn't at all bad. I’m not the most consistent worker in the world, and Soda’s psychology is bad as everyone else’s, but we were able to keep things zipping along nicely enough. There was no visible improvement, though, and Soda in particular could do with some.

Estrella Blanca, Teresa Perez & Catalina Vasquez vs. Purple Viper, Jaguar Queen & Poison Ivy

Purple Viper, Jaguar Queen and Poison Ivy defeated Estrella Blanca, Catalina Vazquez and Teresa Perez in 7:15 by two straight falls. Purple Viper took the first fall with a Viper bite on Teresa Perez, with the final fall happening when Jaguar Queen defeated Catalina Vazquez with a Jaguar Suplex.

Booker’s Thoughts: The girls have worked a few trios matches in the past and they do a good job of covering for their weaknesses. Cat, for example, is still very much not popular with our crowd (though she did show some improvement tonight), but with five other people involved she didn’t have much time to really turn anyone off. Estrella, meanwhile, remains the star of the division, whilst Jaguar is apparently the rising star, with the potential to be a big thing for us going forward.

Boom-Boom Jamaica & Los Cruzados vs. The Viking Warriors & Incan Warrior

Boom-Boom Jamaica and Los Cruzados defeated Incan Warrior and The Viking Raiders in 9:56 by two straight falls. Boom-Boom won the first fall, hitting Uhtred the Viking Drop the Boom, whilst Amazing Fire Fly defeated Ragnar The Viking by pinfall with a Sky High Fire Fly to claim the second.

Booker’s Thoughts: As long as Fire Fly always hits the Sky High Fire Fly I’ll like his matches, and this was pretty decent, even with all the weaknesses these guy’s have. Fortunately Jamaica- probably the weakest of the tecnicos- makes up for his weaknesses with bags of charisma, and whilst the Viking Raiders in particular are two of our weakest workers they've got the experience as a team to work round that.

Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr. and Rapido defeated Las Fuerzas Armadas in 7:17 by two straight falls. The first fall went to Rapido after he hit Border Patrol II with the Rapido Knee, with the final fall happening when Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr. defeated El Jefe Militar by pinfall with a Dragón Driver '07.

Booker’s Thoughts: You couldn't call this a classic but it got the job done. Las Fuerzas will only get better the more experience they have, and whilst Rapido and Dragón aren't two of our very best they've got enough about them to keep things entertaining.

Fallen Angel vs. Hypnotiq Jr.

Fallen Angel defeated Hypnotiq Jr. in 9:47 by two falls to one. Angel took the first fall with a hurracarana pin, before Hypnotiq equalised with El Hipnotismo. The final fall went to Fallen Angel via Submission with Heaven’s Gates.

Booker’s Thoughts: With Hypnotiq proving that he wasn't really ready for a main event push I decided to move him back down into the midcard and give this one to Fallen Angel. The veteran may not be quite what he was physically, but his experience goes a long way, and in any case we can always have him put over someone else down the line who is ready to work at the top of the card.

Snake King vs. El Pavo Real

Snake King defeated El Pavo Real in 15:09 by two straight falls. He took the first via pinfall with a sunset flip, and won the second via disqualification when El Pavo Real hit a blatant low blow. Snake King makes defence number 1 of his CILL World Openweight Championship title.

Booker’s Thoughts: This was irritatingly average and nowhere near good enough for our main event team, though in fairness I at least know what the problem was this time. Neither Snake King nor El Pavo Real has the stamina to go longer than ten minutes and given that our main events usually run to about 15 that’s an issue. Hopefully it won't be too bad going forward as they did improve tonight, but even so this wasn't what I’d hoped for from two of our stronger workers.

Los Gatos Salvajes vs. Oro Negro

Oro Negro defeated Los Gatos Salvajes in 15:12 at two falls to one. Diamante Negro took the first with a Diamond Stud to Tigre Salvaje Jr., whilst El Jaguar was able to equalise at about eight minutes in with a Jaguar Suples to Diamante Negro. The final fall took place when El Sultán defeated El Jaguar by submission with a Camel Clutch. Oro Negro win the CILL World Tag Team Championship titles.

Booker’s Thoughts: This is the second time the tag team titles have changed hands this year (Los Gatos took them off the Viking Warriors back in March), but with the title scenes all dominated by tecnicos this seemed like a good switch. Although they’ve been around for years this is actually the first time Oro Negro have won the titles, and with El Sultán being a rising star and Diamante Negro well established as a top guy (albeit one on the wrong side of the hill) they should serve to keep the titles strong and visible. As for match quality, this was really good and easily the best match on the card.

It'd be nice to see an ongoing lucha dynasty. I hope you can keep this up.

I'm also glad to see a lucha blog. I'll be sure to check in on this when I can.

No problem gents- here's the next entry!

The Lucha Round-Up

October 2014:

As most of our readers will know, Los Día de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is round the corner, and as always CILL will be joining in the festivities with a show of their own. Now, the Day of the Dead shows are habitually where new stars first beak out or announce themselves on the national stage, and with that in mind this month we’re going to take a look at the five CILL stars most likely to break out in the near future:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/TigreSalvaje_zpsc4ef2676.jpg

Tigre Salvaje Jr.: A three-time tag team champion, Tigre has worked his way into being one of the company’s singles stars, and his match at Día de Los Muertos could be a chance for him to really break out as a future World Champion. He’s certainly got all the tools required, and when you drop a title but stay a big name you know something good is going on. With Tigre it’s simply a matter of giving him a chance and seeing what happens.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElSultaacuten_zps4a735dcc.jpg

El Sultán: Sultán’s always been a key part of the CILL Roster, but 2014 has seen him move from being a key midcard player to a future main event star and top level prospect. His bruising, physical style makes him perfect Rudo material, and whilst he’s not the finished article in terms of psychology or selling there’s always the chance Tiburón will look the other way if he continues to deliver.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/AmazingFireFly_zpsd5e48252.jpg

Amazing Fire Fly: This is a bit of an odd one, as Fire Fly has still yet to look like anything but a solid midcard prospect with a spectacular finisher. That finisher, though, is what could really make the difference; word is that both El Maestro and El Tiburón are huge fans of the Sky High Fire Fly, and it can’t be any coincidence that Fire Fly and his partner Fray Valiente have picked up a surprising number of wins in recent months.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/JaguarQueen_zps6c098fb7.jpg

Jaguar Queen: All year Jaguar Queen’s been talked about as the Next Big Luchadora, and whilst I wouldn't necessarily say she’s been a stand-out of the CILL women’s division she’s still young enough to make a big mark in women’s wrestling. There’s probably some improvement required- it’s worth pointing out that she’s only just added a second dimension to her offence beyond chain wrestling- but the women’s division is looking as strong as it ever had, and with a bit of a luck and a lot of the right breaks Jaguar could well fulfil all the predictions.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/TeresaPerez_zps85e133e8.jpg

Teresa Perez: Teresa’s possibly one of the most overlooked luchadoras in the world right now. She’s extremely talented, with solid fundamentals that speak of her time in the U.S., but aside from one run with the QAW Tag Team titles Perez hasn't held any kind of title at all. That’s partially due to her lack of gimmick- one of the problems with going without a mask- but even so, it’s a little mystifying how nobody’s picked up on just how good she is.

Catalina Vasquez & Teresa Perez vs. Purple Viper & Poison Ivy

Catalina Vazquez and Teresa Perez defeated Poison Ivy and Purple Viper in 6:56 by two straight falls; the first fall came through pinfall when Teresa Perez rolled up Purple Viper, with the final fall happening when defeated Poison Ivy by submission with an Around The World Armbar.

Booker’s Thoughts: Cat showed some more improvement tonight, and the crowd have finally started to warm to her. As for the others, they all performed as well as you’d expect, which made for a solid opening bout.

Dragón del Arco Iris Jr. & Soda De La Uva Jr. vs. The Viking Raiders

The Viking Raiders defeated Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr. and Soda De La Uva Jr. in 10:09 at two falls to one after winning the first. Uhtred took the first fall at 4:24 via pinfall on Soda De La Uva after hitting The Odin Slam, whilst Dragón took the second fall with a crucifix pin on Uhtred exactly two minutes later. The final fall came when Ragnar The Viking defeated Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr. by pinfall with a Hammer Of Thor.

Booker’s Thoughts: The crowd still don’t care for the Viking Warriors, but given how successful we’ve been at winning them over with the likes of Cat Vasquez and Rapido I’m determined to stick with them until they improve. After all, our tag division is still coming along and we need all the experienced teams we can get. That’s why they took the win here- ordinarily I’d be wary of jobbing Dragón out as he’s one of our more dependable guys, but it’s not like we’re lacking for guys he can beat to get the win back.

El Jaguar & The Wildfires vs. Incan Warrior & Las Fuerzas Armadas

El Jaguar and The Wildfires defeated Incan Warrior and Las Fuerzas Armadas in 7:23 by two straight falls. Wildfire Blaze took the first fall, pinning Incan Warrior at 2:55 following a Fire Bomb, and the final fall occurred when El Jaguar defeated El Jefe Militar by pinfall with a Jaguar Suplex.

Booker’s Thoughts: This wasn’t great in terms of quality, but both El Jefe and Wildfire Inferno showed enough improvement to take the sting out of that, and in any case I wasn’t expecting this one to be a classic anyway. Incan Warrior still can’t sell for anything, after all, and whilst Inferno’s improving quite a bit he never seems to give 100% in terms of effort.

Rapido vs. Hypnotiq Jr.

Rapido defeated Hypnotiq Jr. in 10:17 by two straight falls, taking the first fall at 5:00 exactly with a pinfall after rolling through a cross-body block and winning the second via pinfall with a Rapido Knee. Rapido makes defence number 6 of his CILL Mexican Openweight Championship title.

Booker’s Thoughts: Hypnotiq wasn't really ready for his main event run but it doesn't seem to have harmed him any as this was a good solid bout. Rapido, meanwhile, has done a good job as champion, and is rapidly closing in on a record number of defences (currently standing at 9, from Diamante Negro when CILL first opened), though that owes as much to the fact that I haven’t chosen the next champion yet as anything he’s done.

El Partido Popular vs. El Reino Animal

El Reino Animal (El Serpiente, Monkey Man and El Tiburón) defeated El Partido Popular (Boom-Boom Jamaica, Amazing Fire Fly and Fray Valiente Jr.) in 9:54 by two straight falls. El Tiburón took the first fall with a Shark Attack on Fray Valiente, and Monkey Man took the second fall by defeating Fray Valiente Jr. by pinfall with a King Of The Swingers.

Booker’s Thoughts: This was another solid bout though you’d really expect it from these six guys. Okay, so there was a lot of inconsistency here, and Jamaica and Valiente are notably lacking in ring psychology, but all six guys bring a lot to the table, and Fire Fly and Serpiente in particular are looking like great prospects at the moment. Valiente also sweetened the deal by showing some useful improvement- hopefully being in a regular trio will encourage that kind of development.

Estrella Blanca vs. Jaguar Queen

Jaguar Queen defeated Estrella Blanca in 9:54 by two straight falls, taking the first fall at 6:22 with submission by armbar and the second by pinfall with a Jaguar Suplex. Jaguar Queen wins the CILL World Luchadoras Championship title.

Booker’s Thoughts: Estrella was way off form tonight, so this wasn’t such a great bout. Hopefully that’s an aberration and not the standard for Jaguar Queen going forward, as we need to freshen up the luchadoras title a bit and this seems the best way- at least this way there’ll be some new challengers, and hopefully Jag can realise all that potential she’s supposed to have.

Tigre Salvaje Jr. vs. El Pavo Real

Tigre Salvaje Jr. defeated El Pavo Real in 14:56 by two falls to one after losing the first. El Pavo Real took the first fall in 4:33 by pinfall via a roll-up and a handful of tights, before Tigre took the second fall at 8:00 exactly through pinfall after hitting the Tigre Roll. Tigre won the final fall via submission with a twisting toe hold.

Booker’s Thoughts: If there was ever any doubt about Tigre’s potential as a top star, this match definitely settled the issue in his favour. The best singles match we’ve had all year, this is exactly what I’m looking for from our top stars going forward. To be fair, Pavo’s stamina has improved since last month and that helped a lot, but Tigre’s the real star here and definitely looks like a big star going forward.

Los Hermanos de la Justicia vs. Oro Negro

Oro Negro defeated Los Hermanos de la Justicia in 15:34 by two falls to one after winning the first. Diamante Negro took the first fall in 6:47 by pinfall on Fallen Angel after hitting the Diamond Stud, whilst Snake King equalised at 7:30 via pinfall after a sunset flip on Diamante Negro. El Sultán won the final fall via submission with a Camel Clutch on Fallen Angel

Booker’s Thoughts: Although both Diamante and Angel are now looking their age the tag team format still works well for hiding their weaknesses, and it definitely helped that their partners are two of our best. Okay, so Sultán could stand to improve a little, but hey, if he can deliver the ratings who cares how good he is?

Rating: D+

Overall Rating: D+, best show of the year and hopefully a harbinger of things to come rather than a one-off.

The Lucha Round-Up

November 2014:

The big news in CILL this month has to be their increase in size, with the company having expanded to more of a regional footing, following the quality of La Caída de La Noche and Día de Los Muertos (apparently the company expanded back in October after La Caída but didn’t announce it until Día de Los Muertos confirmed their expansion).

Now, anyone who follows wrestling will know what kind of changes that kind of expansion will bring to CILL, but probably the most visible are the new additions to the roster that will inevitably be appearing. So far El Maestro has announced four new names for the company, although both he and El Tiburón have admitted more may follow depending on budgeting and how well the new names are integrated into the roster. Currently announced as joining the company are:

Los Tecnicos

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElMiacutetico_zps69493347.jpg

El Mítico Jr.

Age: 23 Billed From: Mexico City

Finishers: German Suplex, Northern Lights Suplex

One of those signings that just seems so obvious, Mítico’s been one of the stand-out talents on the Mexican indy scene, and the only real surprise about this signing is that it’s taken so long to happen. Mítico Jr. is probably the perfect CILL superstar, and I fully expect him to become one of the company’s top guys.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/FlyingJimmyFoxx_zps3068239b.jpg

Flying Jimmy Foxx

Age: 34 Billed From: Phoenix, Arizona

Finisher: Flying Foxx (Flying Double Foot Stomp)

With his contract with TCW due to run out in December, Jimmy Foxx has followed the example of Cannonball Kid and fellow CZCW alumnus Snap Dragon in heading to Mexico to reinvent himself. So far he seems happy enough to play the same kind of Happy-Go-Lucky goofball he’s always played, but his US-style training should help him stand out in CILL, if his Cruiserweight style can be integrated with all the luchadores.

Los Rudos

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/ElAlborotadorConfiado_zpsfb74977e.jpg

El Aborotador Confiado

Age: 28 Billed From: Loreto, Baja California Sur

Finisher: Super Rana (Avalanche Frankensteiner)

The second SOTBPW off-cut to join CILL after Boom-Boom Jamaica, El Aborotador Confiado is CILL’s biggest new signing in terms of name value. Okay, so he’s well known for his tendency to live up to his ‘cocky troublemaker’ character away from the ring, but he’s a decently talented worker and should add a lot to the CILL main event scene.

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g165/Looneyboyo/CILL/LaBestiaPurpura_zpsb7f650ff.jpg

La Bestia Púrpura

Age: 26 Billed From: Ixtapa, Guerrero

Finishers: Beast Bomb (Tiger Bomb), Purpura Stretch (Bow and Arrow Lock)

Trained by the legendary Manuel Prieto, La Bestia Púrpura is, like El Mítico Jr., one of those guys who leave you wondering why nobody’s signed him up before now. He’s just fantastic in almost every way, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already been earmarked as a franchise player going forward- not least because he’s also one of the classiest Luchadores in Mexico, something that El Maestro has to be hoping will balance out Aborotador’s rough edges.

FOR THE CILL WORLD OPENWEIGHT TITLE

Snake King © vs. La Bestia Púrpura

LBP could be a future franchise player, but I don't see him winning the belt first time out.

EMJ rocks.

Flying Jimmy Foxx & Los Gatos Salvajes vs. Los Reino Animal

Not convinced by Reino Animal, despite a good win last time out.

Los Cruzados vs. Oro Negro ©

I don't see a title change in the main; I do think one may happen here.

Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr. & Rapido vs. Hypnotiq Jr. & Incan Warrior

Dragon should pick up a win after last time out.

FOR THE CILL WORLD LUCHADORAS TITLE

Teresa Perez vs. Jaguar Queen ©

She won it in a poor match, but no reason to take it off her straight away.

CILL’S FIRST EVER ATOMICOS MATCH

The Wildfires, Boom-Boom Jamaica & Fallen Angel vs. Las Fuerzas Armadas & The Viking Warriors

I'm really liking Boom-Boom and Fallen Angel.

Catalina Vasquez & Estrella Blanca vs. Poison Ivy & Purple Viper

With the crowd warming to Cat, keep pushing her.

El Pavo Real vs. Soda De La Uva Jr.

I think EPR has more of an upside.

Flying Jimmy Foxx & Los Gatos Salvajes vs. El Reino Animal

El Reino Animal (El Serpiente, El Tiburón and Monkey Man) defeated Flying Jimmy Foxx and Los Gatos Salvajes in 15:25 by two straight falls. El Tiburón took the forst fall at 13:10 by pinfall on El Jaguar after an illegal low-blow, with the final fall happening when Monkey Man defeated Tigre Salvaje Jr. by pinfall with a King Of The Swingers.

Booker’s Thoughts: This wasn’t a bad debut for Jimmy Foxx, but I’m glad I moved this into the opening slot. The problem was largely on our side of the ring; we’re all three of us good workers, but Monkey Man and El Serpiente aren’t really top-level workers individually (not yet, anyway) and that does make a difference. On the whole, though, I was pretty happy with this one.

Catalina Vasquez & Estrella Blanca vs. Poison Ivy & Purple Viper

Catalina Vazquez and Estrella Blanca defeated Poison Ivy and Purple Viper in 9:43 at two falls to one after winning the first. This happened at 2:03 via pinfall when Estrella Blanca caught Poison Ivy with a Prawn Hold, with the second fall happening at 4:42 via submission when Ivy locked Cat Vasquez in the Venus Fly-Trap. The final fall took place when Catalina Vazquez defeated Purple Viper by pinfall with a Flying Bulldog.

Booker’s Thoughts: The luchadoras have shown real improvement of late and it really showed here- these tag matches regularly used to be our worst match of the night. Cat continues to be probably the weakest member of the division, but there’s not the same gap as there used to be, and certainly the other three are all pretty solid workers.

El Pavo Real vs. Soda De La Uva Jr.

El Pavo Real defeated Soda De La Uva Jr. in 6:59 by two straight falls, winning the first fall at 4:44 via pinfall with a DDT and the second by pinfall with a Thousand Eye Thunder.

Booker’s Thoughts: This one wasn’t great but I didn’t expect it to be. Soda’s good but not great, and for all Pavo’s not a bad worker he’s never going to be one of our strongest.

Jaguar Queen vs. Teresa Perez

Jaguar Queen defeated Teresa Perez in 10:07 by two straight falls. She took the first fall at 5:00 via submission with a single-leg Crab, with the final fall happening by pinfall with a Jaguar Suplex. Jaguar Queen makes defence number 1 of her CILL World Luchadoras Championship title.

Booker’s Thoughts: This was really disappointing- Jag’s supposed to be our Next Big Thing, but on the basis of tonight’s match there’s little chance of that happening. Now, to be fair Teresa was way off form tonight and that can’t have helped, but I still expect more from my champions than this.

The Wildfires, Boom-Boom Jamaica & Fallen Angel vs. Las Fuerzas Armadas & The Viking Warriors

Boom-Boom Jamaica, Fallen Angel and The Wildfires defeated The Viking Raiders and Las Fuerzas Armadas in 9:42 by two straight falls. Boom-Boom Jamaica took the first fall at 7:47 via DQ following Ragnar hitting him with a Pilderiver, with the final fall happening when Wildfire Blaze defeated Border Patrol II by pinfall with a Scorched Earth.

Booker’s Thoughts: The Viking Warriors continue to disappoint, dragging this match down and making it more than a little disappointing- I think I’ll replace them in the New Year with one of the tag teams off the indy scene. Everyone else in this match was good enough though- Fallen Angel continues to show his age, and Las Fuerzas and Boom-Boom are none of them great ring psychologists, but it worked.

Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr. & Rapido vs. Hypnotiq Jr. & Incan Warrior

Dragón Del Arco Iris Jr. and Rapido defeated Hypnotiq Jr. and Incan Warrior in 10:26 by two falls to one after losing the first at 3:05 via pinfall, when Hypnotiq rolling Rapido up with El Hipnotismo. Dragón equalised at 5:00 exactly with a Dragon Driver ’07 on Hypnotiq, and the final one happened when Rapido defeated Incan Warrior by pinfall with a Rapido Knee.

Booker’s Thoughts: Although he’s got his weaknesses individually Incan Warrior can really deliver in multi-man environments like this one, and even Hypnotiq looked more comfortable (though that might be down to his return to the midcard). As for the tecnicos, Dragón remains a consistent and useful worker, and Rapido’s been one of the success stories of 2014.

Los Cruzados vs. Oro Negro

Oro Negro defeated Los Cruzados in 14:40 by two straight falls. The first fall happened at 13:58 via submission after El Sultán locked Amazing Fire Fly in the Camel Clutch, whilst the final fall happened when Diamante Negro defeated Fray Valiente Jr. by pinfall with a Gold Rush. Oro Negro make defence number 2 of their CILL World Tag Team Championship titles.

Booker’s Thoughts: So far Oro Negro are two for two on quality title defences. Los Cruzados held up their end well, as usual, but really this one was all about the rudos- Sultán continues to be one of our top young stars, and whilst Diamante isn’t what he used to be his familiarity with his partner helps offset that.

El Mítico Jr. vs. El Alborotador Confiado

El Alborotador Confiado defeated El Mítico Jr. in 7:18 by two straight falls, taking the first fall at 6:23 via pinfall with an Oklahoma Roll; and the final fall by pinfall with a Super Rana.

Booker’s Thoughts: Yeah, these two are on the way up- this was the best match we’ve ever had. Not that that’s entirely surprising, given the name value and talent on display here, but it’s useful to know that we can always look to these boy to deliver in a big-match environment.

Snake King vs. La Bestia Púrpura

Snake King defeated La Bestia Púrpura in 15:11 by two straight falls, with the final fall happening by pinfall with a Snake-Bite. Snake King makes defence number 2 of his CILL World Openweight Championship title.

Booker’s Thoughts: This rounded off a stellar night on good form. Okay, so it wasn’t as good as Confiado/Mítico, but that was an unexpected hit and it’s useful to know that La Bestia can also deliver in a big-match environment. At a guess I’d say that name value played a bigger role than I’d thought- Alborotador is our biggest star by some way, and whilst I’m not sure that Bestia’s much worse than Mítico there might just be enough disparity to make an impact. Either way, I’m not complaining about this one.
