G1 Climax 25 Block A

Samoa Joe (6) vs. Roderick Strong (4)

Rather than being a fast-paced, ROH-esque encounter - this winds up being an awkward plodding affair that never really gets going. Despite Joe and Roddy's best efforts, the chemistry isn't there and the match struggles to create any flow or rhythm until the finishing sequence when Joe dodges a Sick Kick before wrapping on a Coquina Clutch for the submission victory.

Match Time: 14:25

Rating: 68 (C+)

http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/50pxnjpw.png

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Bad Luck Fale (6) vs. Karl Anderson (6)

Another lacklustre match but for totally different reasons. These two don't set out to burn the house down like Suzuki-gun's Naito and Suzuki did on Night 2. Instead they fool around with too sweet's and try a weird comedy match that doesn't get over very well at all, perhaps because the Bullet Club's popularity has rather petered out as of late. Thankfully, after eight minutes or so of that nonsense, we finally get down to some wrestling. The action saves the whole torrid affair somewhat and the match is actually worked to a decent pace considering Fale is in the ring. But Anderson can't hit the Gun Stun even after trying twice and soon succumbs to the devastating Bad Luck Fall. A customary too sweet after the bell reaffirms the brotherhood.

Match Time: 11:21

Rating: 65 (C+)

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Hirooki Goto (10) vs. Toru Yano (8)

Water bottle to the face and we had shenanigans! A Toru Yano wrestling classic! There goes the turnbuckle pad. And now Yano is running away! Goto gives chase, Yano does one full lap of the ring before darting back in between the ropes to hide behind referee Marty Asami. YTR tries to whip Goto into the corner. No such luck so he rakes his eyes and then tries again. But Goto turns the tables and sends Yano back first into the exposed steel! Goto puts Yano on his shoulders for the Ushikoroshi... but Yano grabs the referee's shirt and the proceeding struggle brings all three men crashing to the canvas. With Asami's vision obscured, Goto kneels down and gives Yano a low blow! And then puts him away with a cruel Shouten Kai!

Oh Goto, what is wrong with you?!

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Minoru Suzuki (8) vs. Satoshi Kojima (8)

Suzuki-gun was once named Kojima-gun until Minoru Suzuki stole the group and made it his own. Tonight he's out to do Naito's bidding and teach Kojima a lesson for pinning the IWGP Heavyweight Champion. Or at least that was the plan, Kojima had other ideas of course. MiSu couldn't break the spirit of the fan favourite veteran. Try as he might, Kojima stayed vertical and met Suzuki chop for chop and slap for slap. Whilst his strike game was failing him, Suzuki did experience some expected success with submissions, wrestling Kojima to the mat for a Fujiwara Armbar. But he found the musclebound Heavyweight to be too powerful, reaching the ropes to force a break before countering an attempted Sleeper Hold with a Belly-To-Back Suplex. Suzuki refused to go down without a fight. He saw the elbow pad go flying into Row Z and met a charging Kojima with a slap to the face. This did him no favours, the proceeding Cozy Lariat was delivered with twice the force and Satoshi Kojima ascended to 2-0 over the villainous group.

It's not young lions that attend to Suzuki, they know better! Taichi and El Desperado see to it that the head honcho is conscious and lead him to the back before he realises what's just happened. Kojima sticks around for a little while, raising his arms to pose on the second ropes. He takes a microphone from ring announcer Kimihiko Ozani and tells Tetsuya Naito that sooner or later, this old veteran is coming for him and his IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Kazuchika Okada (12) vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr. (4)

Smith Jr. wrestles a smart match, taking Okada to the canvas and teaching the cocky youngster a thing or two about the Hart Dungeon. He stretches the limbs of the Intercontinental Champion, leaving him reaching for the ropes on several occasions. For lovers of the sweet science, watching Smith Jr. in control is a joy to watch. But the match is most entertaining when Okada is on the offensive. He delights the crowd when he comes back with a Heavy Rain. His signature moves are delivered with style and a kind of finesse that can only endear the viewer to the 27 year-old. After the most perfect of Diving Elbow Drops, Okada looks to be preparing for a Rainmaker Lariat...

When Lance Archer hops on the apron, providing a timely distraction!

Okada comes over, but Archer drops down and grabs his foot, pulling the IWGP Intercontinental Champion out the ring. "The Rainmaker" fights him off with a flurry of forearm smashes and European uppercuts. Entering back into the ring but still visibly distracted by Archer, Okada turns around right into a Bulldog Bomb! And for the second time tonight, the crowd are stunned.

Katsuyori Shibata (8) vs. Yuji Nagata (4)

These two had a superb match two years ago in the G1 Climax, one that was hard to watch as the two men pummeled each other with hard strikes. This match was obviously no different. Unfortunately, despite both Nagata and Shibata's best efforts, the magic wasn't there and the match never did kick into a higher gear. Shibata only knows one style, to kick hard and try to beat the resistance out of his opponent. He was never doing against a tough-as-nails veteran like Nagata and the "Anti-Aging Star" well and truly left his opponent humbled when he pinned him after a Bridging Belly-To-Back Suplex.

These matches have lacked heat for obvious reasons but the KUSHIDA appearance is always well received. G1 Climax 25 Block A

AJ Styles (12) vs. Kota Ibushi (10)

With Goto winning earlier tonight and with Tanahashi and Marufuji in action later tonight, the pressure was on both Styles and Ibushi to keep their respective balls rolling. Despite their status as Heavyweights, these two moved around the ring at a tremendously fast pace. Audible ooh's and aah's could be heard at the dodges, counters and startling transitions that these two innovators pulled out the bag. Both competitors were even until Ibushi caught Styles springboarding in with a dropkick to the chest before he could connect with his signature forearm smash. The "Golden Star" enjoyed his best period of the match at this point but couldn't keep Styles down long enough to even attempt the Phoenix Splash. The two exchanged strikes but Ibushi ducked Styles' spinning backfist. Ibushi attempted to follow up with a Pele Kick but Styles took evasive action. He attempted a Pele Kick of his own but Ibushi caught the foot and shoved it downwards before taking advantage with a Snap German Suplex for a very close two count.

A flurry of near falls followed, Ibushi coming close with a Standing Shooting Star Press before Styles got his knees up on a Standing Corkscrew Moonsault. AJ nearly put this one to bed with a Bloody Sunday but Ibushi still had the wherewithal to kick out before the three. Styles then tried the Styles Clash... but Ibushi countered out with a Hurricanrana. After putting Styles down on the canvas with a body slam, Ibushi ascended to the top rope. Or at least he thought he had put AJ Styles down... because he leaped off with the Pheonix Splash only to find himself caught in mid-air!!!

Styles held on to the legs and slammed Ibushi to the canvas with the Styles Clash! Referee Red Shoes Unno did the honours from there.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Tetsuya Naito (13) vs. Tomohiro Ishii (4)

Naito's chances of making the final rested on him bettering Ishii tonight and then defeating Nagata tomorrow. And that was only if Nakamura slipped up against Makabe and/or Kojima. The whole situation is very poetic considering Naito's clashes with those two men were perhaps two of his most notable in this year's tournament.

But first, the NEVER Openweight Champion. Even though Ishii has had a truly awful tournament, he's no stranger to Naito and the two contested one of 2014's greatest matches at The New Beginning. Much of this contest followed the same pattern, a complacent Naito going through the motions as Ishii got the better of him at every corner. Rather than being tactful and making better use of his technical ability, Naito tried to break Ishii's fighting spirit as the two exchanged forearm strikes. The "Stardust Genius" interrupted the exchange with an Enzuigiri but it wasn't one that had much effect, Ishii shrugging it off to lariat the IWGP Heavyweight Champion out of his boots. With a handful of hair, Ishii pulled Naito back to his feet and hoisted him up into the air for the Brainbuster... dropping him down on his skull for the huge upset victory.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Hiroshi Tanahashi (12) vs. Naomichi Marufuji (12)

These two men last met in a singles match three years ago as part of Marufuji's short visit to the King Of Sports ring. A lot has changed since then. Marufuji had ascended to a respectful position as NOAH's ace before leaving in April and Tanahashi has all but cemented his legacy as one of finest professional wrestlers of the last decade. These two competitors don't harbour much animosity for each other and thus the opening period of the match consists of respectful chain wrestling. The pace begins to pick up as Marufuji starts aiming kicks at Tana's head. Rightfully so, Tanahashi responds with a Dragon Screw Leg Whip and starts to up the anti.

Marufuji's avoids some tricky situations with his impressive athleticism, weaving gracefully out the way when Tanahashi aims a Flying Forearm Smash at him. Later on in the match, he avoids Tanahashi's German Suplex by rotating over to land on his feet. But the showmanship is nothing without an end product. Tanahashi reads the situation well (perhaps better than anybody else) and knows every counter in the book. As Marufuji tries to set up the Pole Shift (Fisherman's Suplex Piledriver), Tanahashi wraps his right leg around Marufuji's left leg and blocks several attempts at the move. Marufuji gives it up and charges in with a Bicycle High Knee. He only finds thin air, Tanahashi dodged and by the time Marufuji clocked on to what had happened, he was being drilled into the canvas with the Sling Blade. Tana ascended to the top rope, crashing down with the High Fly Flow to keep his slim hopes of reaching the final alive.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Shinsuke Nakamura (15) vs. Togi Makabe (10)

A rematch from Wrestling Dontaku where these two had one of the best matches of the year. This match had the same energy and was competed with the same urgency as a hungry Makabe looked to avenge the defeat he suffered on May 17th. Both men were cautious at the start, not wanting to be drawn into an exchange of strikes that could see their fatiguing bodies give out before they've really even started this one. That made little difference in the long run as Makabe asserted his strength and power advantage and was soon power slamming all the swagger out of the former IWGP Intercontinental Champion. As the contest continued, the timidity of both men seemed to gradually wilt away entirely and the tenth minute was greeted by a back and forth exchange of forearm strikes that was unceremoniously cut short by Nakamura's digging several knees into his opponent's mid-section.

Now it was about endurance. Nakamura nearly kissed his undefeated run goodbye when Makabe folded him up like an accordion on a brutal Power Bomb. The key word in that sentence being nearly, Nakamura using his long legs to kick Makabe away just before the three count. But the "Unchained King Kong" pressed on, shunning off the effects of two knee strikes to the gut to catch a charging Nakamura with a Powerslam. Makabe signaled that this one was over but as he lofted his right arm for the King Kong Lariat - just seconds later he found himself trapped in a Cross Armbreaker, a truly brilliant counter by the "King Of Strong Style". To Makabe's credit, he powered his way to the ropes, forcing a break as a frustrated Nakamura had to be warned by referee Red Shoes Unno to break the hold before the count of five. Nakamura refocused and began his bombardment. First a Single Leg Dropkick from the second rope staggered Makabe, but the proceeding BOMA YE~! found only thin air as Makabe dodged, charged to the ropes and caught his opponent unexpectedly with a King Kong Lariat!

With no hesitation, Makabe raced to the corner. Ascending to the top rope, he flew off with the King Kong Knee Drop! And found the cleanest of connections, covering the Block B leader shortly after for the sweet taste of redemption.

What a crazy show...

Naito, Okada, and Nakamura take big L's. Meanwhile I'm hyped for that Cozy Heavyweight title reign. Shame Strong/Joe didn't give, and a bigger shame that Anderson had such bad luck <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

That show was insane, upset after upset. It was awesome even though I only got 4/10 damn. I honestly don't know who is going to win the whole thing I wanna put my money on Naito but I just don't know. :D:D

Haha yeah. I was surprised at some of the picks people made though. Like Shibata beating Nagata, which I thought was an obvious one since Nagata had only won twice at that point.

Man, great show and some surprising results! I did awful with my predictions though!

Also, it's not a problem, but it's CobheadJake, not Jack. ;)

Most people did. :')

I'm sorry about getting your name wrong, I generally tend to tally predictions and post my shows late at night so it's easy for things like that to slip through the cracks. Again, apologies!

Either AJ or Okada is totally making the finals thanks to Honma beating Tanahashi.

Sorry to burst your bubble... but it's mathematically impossible for Okada to make the final. :p

G1 Climax 25 Night 11 Preview

http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/g1climax250.jpg

G1 Climax 25 Night 11

August 13th, 2015

The Marine Messe Fukuoka is the venue.

Block B is simple. If Nakamura wins, he's in the final. But if he loses and Naito wins, we will have to hold a special tie breaker match between those two to decide who progresses to the Seibu Dome.

Block A could be equally as simple. If AJ Styles wins, he's through. But if he loses, Tanahashi could progress to the final should he beat Honma. If Tanahashi loses, Marufuji beating Styles will see him progress to the final! By virtue of their head to head records against the guys above them in the block, both Okada and Goto have been eliminated from contention.

Ready? Let's go!
