WCW 1994: The Clash of the Titans

The year is 1994. For the last five years World Championship Wrestling has been treading water against its rival, Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation. The entire North American wrestling industry has seen a decline in business, overall, and with the sagging fortunes of the WWF and its "New Generation", the time seemed to be ripe for WCW to strike out and stake its claim to wrestling dominance.

Enter Eric Bischoff, a former announcer turned television producer, he's been given the task of bringing WCW back to the forefront of professional wrestling. Billionaire owner Ted Turner has said money is no object, and Bischoff has set out to refresh WCW, and he knows exactly who to bring in to lead WCW to the promised land. Hulk Hogan, having left the confines of the land that made him a wrestling icon and multi-millionaire, has been lured down south with promises of new horizons and a boatload of cash. Chief among this is the ultimate dream match up from the 1980s, the one Vince McMahon had but never could pull the trigger on, as Hulk Hogan faces The Nature Boy Ric Flair for the first time on Pay Per View.

Of course, the trick will be to keep Hogan happy...while not destroying the little stuff WCW has already got going for it. It's up to Bischoff to revolutionize the sport, while not destroying it in the process.

Week 1 News and Notes

- WCW President Eric Bischoff has begun moving talent around and cutting the fat, so to speak. A few contracts were due for renewal in a month's time, and the word on the street is that Ron Simmons has been offered a contract extension for a further three years. Mick Foley (Cactus Jack) was offered a 1 year deal to stay in Turner Land, while Terry Taylor and Erik Watts were also given extension terms, though the terms of the deal are said to be on a Pay Per Appearance basis, rather than the written deal they had before.

- It is being said backstage that the contracts of Mark Canterbury (Shanghai Pierce) and Dennis Knight (Tex Salzenger) will not be renewed at the end of the month. Creative doesn't have anything for them at the moment, and they are viewed as something of dead weight.

- The same can be said for personalities Chris Cruise and Sonny Onoo, both of whom were released from their contracts immediately. Cruise was terminated without any loss of money, but WCW bought out the remainder of Onoo's contract to the tune of around 5,000 dollars. Teddy Long was in a similar situation, though due to the expense of his contract he's been tasked with managing Scott Stud for the near future.

- Bischoff is also said to be interested in acquiring some talents as well. Already confirmed is a contract floated to Hulk Hogan's best friend, Ed Leslie, but another former WWF'er Barry Darsow is also being targeted. As has Stevie Richards and Ice Train from the independent scene, and international star Eddie Guerrero. Bischoff has also been said to be interested in a big name tag team (though who is unknown). More updates to come as they are announced.

Week 1 Results

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vMNExPSDW4s/T-B9ZitjxlI/AAAAAAAAFA0/g9pn-cK40ns/s1600/vlcsnap-2012-06-19-08h23m34s2.png

Match #1: Harlem Heat d. Joey Maggs & Scott Stud w/Teddy Long

- Pretty standard opening match, as Harlem Heat pick up the W. The decision to pair Teddy Long with Scott Stud appears to be a dud, as there is no chemistry between the two. We have plans for Stud in the tag ranks, but no idea what to do with Teddy now.

Promo#1: Ric Flair on Hulk Hogan

- Flair cuts a great promo, as usual, hyping up the match between he and Hogan at Bash at the Beach. Folks are really anticipating this main event, for obvious reasons, and Flair is selling the hell out of it.

Match #2: Big Van Vader d. Marcus Alexander Bagwell

- Bagwell was kept strong as he could be against Vader, but the big man was on his game tonight. Vader finishes the match with a Powerbomb in a good buildup match for him.

Segment #1: Guardian Angel Attacks

- The Guardian Angel, who's been on the receiving end of Vader's wrath the last few months, decided on a preemptive strike ahead of their encounter at Bash at the Beach. The crowd liked what they saw, and responded well to the encounter between the two big men.

Promo#2: Cactus & Sullivan on The Nasty Boys

- With their tag team title defense imminent, Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan ranted on the challengers, there old nemesis The Nasty Boys. Interestingly it appears Dave Sullivan has been moved on to other things for now.

Match #3: The Nasty Boys d. Cactus Jack & Kevin Sullivan to win the WCW Tag Team Titles

- Some thoughts were given to keeping the belts on Jack and Sullivan, but the decision to turn Sullivan heel was made rather quickly, given his better performance in that area. Jack takes the pin as The Nastys win the belts for a third time.

Segment #2: Kevin Sullivan Heel Turn

- Sullivan took exception to Jack's loss of the tag belts, and turned on his partner. As a result, Kevin Sullivan has officially turned heel, which the crowd bought into hook, line and sinker. A feud appears imminent between the two partners (which is good, considering their lack of chemistry in the tag match was noticeable.)

Match #4: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat d. Rip Rogers

- Not much to write home about here. Steamboat wins pretty easily in a squash match.

Segment #3: Austin/Steamboat Confrontation

- Following the match, Steve Austin came out and confronted Ricky Steamboat in the ring. The two got into a verbal shouting match but road agents and wrestlers broke up the altercation before any punches were thrown, setting up the upcoming title defense at Bash at the Beach.

Match #5: "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright d. The Gambler

- Another squash match, this time putting the young Alex Wright over. Management is high on this kid as a future star. The hope is that some solid wins now will put him in title contention by the end of the year.

Segment #4: Dustin Rhodes' Mystery Partner

- A tag match between Dustin Rhodes and a Mystery Partner against Bunkhouse Buck and Terry Funk has been set for Bash at the Beach. Rhodes initially came out to announce who his partner would be, but the Stud Stable of Funk and Buck came out and taunted The Natural, saying he didn't have a partner. Rhodes would prove them wrong though, as he revealed his mystery partner to be none other than the Man Called Sting!

Match #6: "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff d. Dave Sullivan

- Pretty standard stuff for Orndorff. Word on the street is that management is not high on Paul Roma, and so Orndorff may be getting a singles push away from his Pretty Wonderful tag team partner in the near future.

Match #7: Hulk Hogan w/Jimmy Hart vs. "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson

- Two fan favorites squaring off here, as Arn would serve as the first test for Hulkamania in WCW. With Ric Flair providing color commentary to the match, Anderson put up a valiant effort against the #1 contender, but Hogan secured the win with a legdrop, the first of several he hopes to come in WCW.

Segment #5: Championship Confrontation

- After the match Flair gets up from his commentary position and confronts his challenger in the ring. The two men stare at each other, but no punches are thrown. Hogan dares Flair to attack, but Flair simply shrugs him off and walks away to end the show.

Week 2 News and Notes

- The signing of several talents has been completed, and as contracts run out over the course of the next few weeks we will see them show up in WCW. One semi-major name, Barry Darsow, has already debuted for television tapings this week.

- Included in that bunch is a big name tag team that's said to be making their debut at Bash at the Beach. Eric Bischoff is tight lipped as to who this might be, however.

- The current card for Bash at the Beach is shaping up well. Bischoff has apparently said this will be the show that "defines the rest of the year for WCW."

- WCW has also been busy shoring up their own contracts. Mick Foley and Ron Simmons both signed the contract extensions they were given last week, while the offer has been made to Alex Wright for a written deal. Word is that they may still not be done signing people to contracts, and there have been few talent releases made either while Bischoff sees where everyone is at. To that end, even Shanghai Pierce and Tex Salzenger have been offered six month contracts on a pay per appearance deal.

Match #1: "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan d. "Pretty" Paul Roma

- Pretty standard opening match as Duggan beat the former Horseman in a mere 8 minutes. Despite the short length of matches, Duggan appears to be in bad shape as he was getting winded by the end.

Segment #1: Ron Simmons Revenge

- Ron Simmons came out and attacked Duggan, retribution for his loss last week on Main Event. Even though all Duggan was doing was selling, he still looked winded and his viability as a long term competitor may be lacking in the future.

Promo #1: Harley Race and Vader

- Harley Race cut a promo with Big Van Vader and Gene Okerlund, talking about the upcoming match at Bash at the Beach between his client and The Guardian Angel. Race is a natural on the mic, so this really went over well.

Match #2: "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan d. Dave Sullivan

- After turning heel the decision was made to have a quick split between Dave Sullivan and Kevin with a blow off match this week. Management doesn't see much value in Dave Sullivan outside of being an enhancement talent, and so Kevin easily picked up the win here.

Segment #2: Cactus Jack's Revenge

- After being betrayed last week, it was pretty clear that we were going to have a feud between Cactus and Kevin going forward. Jack laid out Sullivan quickly in the middle of the ring, setting the stage for an encounter in the not so distant future.

Match #3: Stars 'n Stripes d. Bad Attitude

- Bagwell & The Patriot defeated Eaton and Keirn in relatively easy fashion. Management is still high on Bagwell (given that he was protected last week in a loss to Vader) but it's unclear if that will be as a singles star or as a tag star.

Promo #2: Hogan on Flair

- Hulk Hogan cut an interview with Gene Okerlund about Ric Flair, drawing a huge amount of fan support for his work. He also said that he knows all about Flair's dirty tricks, and that he'll have an insurance policy to watch his back next week and at Bash at the Beach. Say what you will about his in ring work, but Hogan is one of the best character players in wrestling history.

Match #4: Sting d. Bunkhouse Buck

- In relation to their upcoming tag match, Sting defeated Bunkhouse Buck in a relatively even affair. Sting's momentum seems to have stalled a bit since losing at Spring Stampede to Ric Flair, so this program will hopefully get him back into the limelight.

Match #5: "Flyin'" Brian Pillman d. Diamond Dallas Page w/The Diamond Doll

- Management is high on both these guys, so don't be surprised to see both of them in the near future moving up the card. This was a surprisingly good match, as both men just kind of clicked with one another.

Segment #3: Backstage Brawl

- Vader is shown heading for his car when he confronts The Guardian Angel. Words are exchanged but the two men quickly begin trading blows, as a bevy of road agents try to break them apart.

Match #6: Johnny B. Badd d. Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker

- Pretty obvious squash match as Badd is primed for his TV title match with Lord Steven Regal at Bash at the Beach. Badd finishes off Parker in quick amount of time.

Segment #4: Regal Confronts Badd

- After the match, as Johnny B. Badd is celebrating, Lord Steven Regal comes out to confront him. Both men stare at each other, and Badd dares Regal to come into the ring. Regal simply shrugs him off and then dismisses him with a casual wave of his hand.

Promo #3: Nasty Boys Open Challenge

- The Nasty Boys are speaking with Gene Okerlund, and say that as the three time World Tag Team Champions, they are clearly the best team in WCW. They issue an open challenge to any team in WCW, any team in wrestling, to try and knock them off their perch at Bash at the Beach.

Match #7: "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair w/Sensuous Sherri d. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat by submission to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

- Stunning Steve Austin was at ringside, providing some guest color commentary for what was another classic encounter between two longtime rivals. Steamboat gave as good as he got with Flair, but in the end Flair's dirty tricks and skill in the ring wound up getting him the victory via submission.

Segment #5: Hogan for the Save

- After the match, Austin came into the ring and both he and Flair began putting the boots to Steamboat. Hulk Hogan quickly came to Steamboat's aid, saving him from the beating and chasing away the attacking Flair and Austin.

Match #1: Brian Armstrong d. Terry Taylor

- Just a match to warm up the crowd, but it didn't really work well as Armstrong and Taylor didn't really click.

Segment #1: Hogan's Insurance Policy

- Last week Hulk Hogan had said he had an insurance policy waiting for Ric Flair at Bash at the Beach. That insurance policy suddenly showed up...in the form of his good friend, Brother Brutus!.

Match #2: "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson d. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff

- Anderson scored a win in a competitive match. The two men had decent chemistry in the ring, which certainly helped it go over as well as it did.

Segment #2: Choose a Side

- Backstage Arn Anderson is approached by his old friend, Ric Flair. Flair says that the time has come for The Enforcer to decide if he's going to back him against Hogan. Anderson says that he doesn't have a side in the fight, and Flair told him that if he's not with him, he's against him, and to make up his mind fast before he has to do something that he regrets.

Promo #1: Jim Duggan on Ron Simmons

- Jim Duggan cuts a promo on Ron Simmons, who he will be fighting at Bash at the Beach.

Promo #2: Austin on Steamboat

- In a much more successful promo than the last, Stunning Steve cuts an unscripted masterpiece against Steamboat, showing his talents on the microphone.

Match #3: "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan d. "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes by disqualification

- Sullivan and Rhodes had a decent match, and Sullivan had the upper hand until Cactus Jack intervened and attacked The Taskmaster, ending the match in a dq.

Segment #3: Backstage Brawl

- When we come back from commercial break we see that Bunkhouse Buck and Dustin Rhodes are now fighting backstage, as the two are separated by road agents and other wrestlers.

Segment #4: Badd's Scouting

- Lord Steven Regal is in the ring, awaiting his opponent for his TV title defense, when Johnny B. Badd comes down to take a look at the competition. Regal doesn't seem happy about this development.

Match #4: Lord Steven Regal d. "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright by submission to retain the WCW Television Title

- Wright was kept strong in doing the job to Regal, a sign of things to come certainly. Lord Steven, however, picks up another submission victory and merely stares down his opponent for Bash at the Beach.

Promo #3: Hogan on Flair

- Hulk Hogan cuts another great segment on Ric Flair, that had the crowd eating out of his hand.

Segment #5: Disrespecting a Legend

- Tony Schiavone and Dusty Rhodes are running down the card for Bash at the Beach, when they get to the tag team match between Sting & Dustin Rhodes against Bunkhouse Buck and Terry Funk. This brings out Funk, who mocks Dusty Rhodes and then slaps the cowboy hat off of his head. Dusty moves to attack, but Schiavone holds him back, as Funk says that his boy is "gonna get the whoopin' that you should have put on him years ago."

Match #5: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat d. Stevie Ray by disqualification

- Ricky Steamboat faced one half of Harlem Heat, and had the match well in hand until Steve Austin interjected himself into the match and caused a disqualification, getting a few shots in for good measure.

Match #6: Big Van Vader & The Nasty Boys w/Harley Race d. The Guardian Angel & Stars 'n Stripes

- Vader pinned The Patriot in this six man tag match that saw the two big men get their hands on each other ahead of their big match at Bash at the Beach. Decent main event match, but Marcus Bagwell was a little off his game tonight.

Segment #6: Flair vs. Hogan Recap

- The music video that has been airing about Flair and Hogan is shown again.

Segment #7: Confrontation of the Titans

- Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan have a confrontation in the ring, where the two men begin bad mouthing each other and calling themselves the biggest icon in the sport. Gene Okerlund tries to conduct the interview professionally, but he was clearly outshined by both men. Flair eventually took exception to something Hulk Hogan said and then slapped him across the face, leading to fisticuffs...

Segment #8: A Decision?

- Hogan and Flair continued to trade blows, until Sensuous Sherri jumped on the back of Hogan and tried to manhandle him. Flair took advantage to kick Hogan in the groin and stomp away, which led to the arrival of Brother Brutus...and Arn Anderson to the ring. Anderson and Brutus cleared Flair and Sherri out of the ring, as Flair could only stare in disbelief at the actions of his former friend in Anderson as the show came to a close.

What has quickly become one of the most hyped events in Wrestling History will take place this Sunday. Every title in WCW is on the line, but there's so much more than that. So sit back wrestling fans and enjoy the Bash at the Beach preview.

WCW World Heavyweight Championship Match

"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair © w/Sensuous Sherri vs. Hulk Hogan w/Jimmy Hart

The Clash of the Titans. Without question the two biggest icons in the history of our sport. It is the dream match of dream matches, as the eleven time world champion faces the most recognizable wrestler since Andre the Giant. Hogan has come into WCW with much fanfare, but Flair has disregarded the challenger to a certain degree, saying that this isn't "the Great White North", and that Hogan is fighting in Flair country. Will Hulkamania run wild in WCW or does the dirtiest player in the game have some new tricks up his sleeve for the Immortal One?

2 out of 3 Falls for the WCW United States Championship

"Stunning" Steve Austin © vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

The feud between these two has been simmering for months, and now the brash upstart Austin is willing to put the gold on the line against the veteran Steamboat. The Dragon has decried Austin's apparent lack of respect for tradition, but Austin says that he respects tradition, just not old fossils past their prime. The two men have come to blows in recent weeks, and the only way to prove who the better man is is with two out of three falls.

Coal Miner's Glove Tag Team Match

"The Natural" Dustin Rhodes & Sting vs. Bunkhouse Buck & Terry Funk w/Col. Robert Parker

With the feud between Dustin Rhodes and the Stud Stable continuing to fester, Rhodes is bound and determined to get Funk in a match. To do this, he enlisted the aid of first a mystery partner, which turned out to be the Man Called Sting. Sting and Rhodes have stumped Parker's Stud Stable in recent weeks, but Funk made things personal by slapping Dustin Rhodes' father "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes. With a Coal Miner's Glove high above the ring, who knows what kind of destruction will take place when The Natural finally gets his hands on Funk.

WCW World Tag Team Championship Match

The Nasty Boys © vs. ??????

Having defeated Cactus & Sullivan to regain their belts, The Nastys believe that they lord over the tag team division, and have issued an open challenge to any team in wrestling to face them for the gold. Who might answer the challenge? Will it be a team currently in WCW...or perhaps some team from parts elsewhere? Whoever it is, the Nasty's are planning a trip to Pitty City, without a return ticket for their challengers.

Last Man Standing Match

The Guardian Angel vs. Big Van Vader w/Harley Race

The saga between these two behemoths has become untenable, as both men have scored victories over the other. The hope is that by beating their opponent into unconsciousness, that this issue will finally be settled once and for all.

WCW World Television Title Match

Lord Steven Regal © w/Sir William vs. Johnny B. Badd

Since Regal's recent title victory, he seems to have garnered the attention of Johnny B. Badd, who has remained a top contender for the title for a number of months now. Badd is bound and determined to capture the gold, but Regal's wily ways have frustrated him thus far. Is this the time for Johnny B. Badd to become Johnny B. Champ?

Grudge Match

Cactus Jack vs. "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan

After losing the tag team titles, Kevin Sullivan went on a rampage and laid waste to his former tag partner. Since that time Jack has become a one-man wrecking crew, bound and determined on revenge against the Taskmaster. Who knows if the ring will be able to hold these two heated rivals.

Tag Team Match

Harlem Heat vs. Stars 'N Stripes

With the Nastys busy dealing with...whoever they'll be facing, the top spot may once again come open, and with these two top teams squaring off, it'll certainly be electric.

Singles Match

"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright vs. Diamond Dallas Page w/The Diamond Doll

Alex Wright has impressed a lot of people in recent weeks, but DDP hasn't been one of them. Page has promised to put an end to the Wonderkid, and promises also that he may have a big surprise for him and all of WCW at Bash at the Beach.

Singles Match

Ron Simmons vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan

Following a loss to Jim Duggan on Main Event, Ron Simmons has made it his goal in life to destroy the man from Glens Falls New York. The All-American is as tough as they come, though, and has agreed to a rematch to try and settle the issue with Simmons.

Singles Match

"Pretty" Paul Roma vs. Eddie Guerrero

International Second Generation Star Eddie Guerrero will be making his debut at Bash at the Beach, and he couldn't have found a much tougher opponent in the form of former tag team champion "Pretty" Paul Roma. Guerrero hopes to make an impact in WCW, as more foreign stars are set to make their presence felt in the coming weeks and months.

I like that you brought in WCW Worldwide right off the bat. It is a pretty historic show, and the two B shows serve as a good way to get everybody the right amount of TV time.

WCW World Heavyweight Championship Match

"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair © w/Sensuous Sherri vs. Hulk Hogan w/Jimmy Hart

Hogan picking up the title is smart money. While the WCW fans hadn't accepted him completely yet, Hulk will do good things for you as long as you play the cards right with him. I'm very interested to see what you intend on doing with Arn, as he seems to be pitted against Flair now. Is it a swerve, or a way to ride Flair into a "midcard" feud? FIND OUT TOMORROW ON NITRO~

2 out of 3 Falls for the WCW United States Championship

"Stunning" Steve Austin © vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

Austin could perhaps be a future player... but it will be interesting to see if you can get him to that level when the top spots are already taken.

Coal Miner's Glove Tag Team Match

"The Natural" Dustin Rhodes & Sting vs. Bunkhouse Buck & Terry Funk w/Col. Robert Parker

My research before starting War of the Thrones actually had said that Arn had already agreed to be the partner, but hey, chalk it up to "because WCW". That nitpick out of the way, Sting is a great partner for Dustin, as they have history of coming to one another's aid in times of need, and it gives Sting something to do other than just standing around playing second fiddle to Hogan. I don't even begin to suspect that this one will be over here, just as IRL; but whether this becomes the WarGames at Fall Brawl or not is in doubt. Also, lol coal miner. At least Sting has experience in those matches!

WCW World Tag Team Championship Match

The Nasty Boys © vs. ??????

The Nastys are solid when given the right matches. Their tag experience can not be discounted, and plus, they have Hogan backing. They run over this challenge in search of the next.

Last Man Standing Match

The Guardian Angel vs. Big Van Vader w/Harley Race

Vader is the only other real threat you can throw at Hogan, and so he should just keep looking strong until Hulk is done with Flair.

WCW World Television Title Match

Lord Steven Regal © w/Sir William vs. Johnny B. Badd

Badd may have his day, but Regal is legit. Don't do like I did in War and squander it, to the point that now I have the uphill battle of trying to rebuild him.

Grudge Match

Cactus Jack vs. "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan

Despite signing Jack to a new extension, I can't see him walking out of this one with the win. In the short term, just to keep this feud going; but if he gets into the right position, Sullivan could end up being the thorn in Hogan's side that he was IRL.

Tag Team Match

Harlem Heat vs. Stars 'N Stripes

Easy win for the brothers.

Singles Match

"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright vs. Diamond Dallas Page w/The Diamond Doll

DDP is a midcard comedy heel for now. He can promise all the surprises he wants, but I look more at how you kept Alex strong against Regal as proof that while you may not be giving him the undefeated streak, he's definitely getting a push in the immediate future.

Singles Match

Ron Simmons vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan

Ron picks up a win, causing this to go to a rubber match.

Singles Match

"Pretty" Paul Roma vs. Eddie Guerrero

As you said in your preview post, Eddie is the first of many who will be on their way to WCW. Start off the fresh faces with a bang by giving him this big win.

=======

Who will be the Mystery Opponents for The Nasty Boys? Brad & Brian Armstrong

What will be the highest rated match on the card? Hogan vs Flair

Will anyone turn at the show (the current listing of heels and faces is up to date on the first post)? If so, who? I'll go with no.

We are welcome to Bash at the Beach in front of a sold-out crowd in Orlando, Florida. Tony Schiavone and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan run down the card briefly, of course mentioning that the biggest event of the night will be arguably the biggest match in the history of professional wrestling, as "Nature Boy" Ric Flair puts the WCW World Heavyweight Championship on the line against Hulk Hogan. Bobby says it's like Babe Ruth going up to bat against Sandy Koufax, Muhammad Ali versus Joe Louis, the two biggest icons in their sport without question squaring off for the first time on Pay Per View, and for the Heavyweight Championship of the World. Tony reminds us in addition that every championship is on the line here tonight as well, but we are going to kick things off with singles action here at Bash at the Beach.

"Pretty" Paul Roma vs. Eddie Guerrero

Eddie Guerrero was making his debut tonight, a fact the announcers quickly mention, talking about his family history and his travels around the world. The match was fairly competitive, but Guerrero shined with his mixture of a high flying offense with sound technical ability. Roma nearly ended the match with a sleeper hold, but Guerrero fought back and eventually picked up the victory by hitting the Frogsplash for the 1-2-3.

Gene Okerlund is backstage with the Heavyweight Champion of the World and the Sensuous Sherri, as they talk about the matchup later tonight, the Dream Match of Dream Matches against Hulk Hogan. Flair talks about the tradition of WCW, and of the sport. He says that for two years he was "up North", and Hogan did everything he could to dodge Flair. But now that Hogan has come to Flair Country, to World Championship Wrestling, Flair is going to make sure that Hogan knows exactly where his place is.

Okerlund asks about the so-called insurance policy in the form of Brother Brutus, to which Flair replies that Hogan can bring all the cronies he wants, but he's never had to deal with the dirtiest player in the game. And there is no one in the game who plays it better, than the Nature Boy.

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. Ron Simmons

The recent feud between Ron Simmons and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan has heated up in the last couple of weeks, and both men seemingly waste no time in attacking one another. This is far from a technical masterpiece, as both men brawl their way into a test of power and strength more than anything else. Duggan continually frustrates Simmons, who dishes out more punishment to the Glens Falls veteran. Before long Simmons loses his temper and finally says to hell with it and grabs a chair from the outside, smacking Duggan across the back and losing by disqualification.

After the match, Simmons continues to pound away on Duggan, as referee Brady Boone can only watch in horror. Duggan does try to fight back with his fists, but Simmons strength is too much as he whips Duggan into the guard rail and then powerslams him onto the concrete floor, leaving him a heap on the ground. Simmons raises his hands to a chorus of boos as EMT's come out to check on Duggan.

Gordon Solie is standing by with the World Television Champion, Lord Steven Regal and his associate Sir William. Solie asks if Regal is ready for the challenge facing him tonight as he takes on Johnny B. Badd, and Regal merely scoffs at him. He says Badd is nothing more than a common peasant, an overdressed peacock with a bad haircut. Regal says that he has more talent and refinement in his little finger than Badd has in his whole family tree, and that tonight he will prove beyond any question, who the better man is, and walk out still the television champion.

Diamond Dallas Page w/The Diamond Doll vs. "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright

The strong performance of Alex Wright in recent weeks has apparently caught the ire of Diamond Dallas, who promised a big surprise tonight. In the early going it appeared as if the surprise would be another dominant victory by Wright, as he was strong in the early going of the match. DDP snuck in a quick eye gouge and took over from there, but before long Wright got back into his rhythm and took back control. He was all set to finish off Page when The Diamond Doll got on the ring apron and distracted the referee. Page tried to cheap shot Wright but the Wunderkind countered with his German Suplex, with the referee still distracted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/Darbicus/WCW1994/Kama_zpseqnheawa.jpg

From out of the crowd came a huge man who got in the ring and drilled Alex Wright, breaking up the pinfall. He picked up Wright and then hit a huge front slam that left him on the ground, while the ref was still distracted, before getting out of the ring. This only got a two count but Page quickly applied the Diamond Cutter and scored a three count that way.

Harlem Heat vs. Stars 'N Stripes

Two of the best young tag teams squared off here for a spot in the pecking order, and the match was certainly very even throughout. The quick moving Bagwell managed to keep the bigger Harlem Heat on their toes, and utilized quick teamwork to keep Booker T in their corner for the first third of the match, but Booker managed to isolate the Patriot after a missed dropkick, and he and Stevie Ray started laying into the All-American. Bagwell did catch a hot tag near the end, but the strength and power of Harlem Heat proved too much to overcome, as Booker T finished off the Patriot with a Scissor Kick to the back of the head that scored the pinfall.

Gene Okerlund next stands by with The Enforcer Arn Anderson, asking him about his actions the night previous on WCW Saturday Night, when Double A seemingly abandoned his longtime friend Ric Flair to stand alongside Hulk Hogan and Brother Brutus in the center of the ring. Anderson says that Flair forced him into a corner, and he said that he had made his choice and he'll stand by it no matter what happens. He also says that tonight all he wants to see is a good matchup, with the better man winning and walking out of Orlando with the Heavyweight Championship of the World. Okerlund is forced to interrupt as he hears of some commotion elsewhere in the building however...

We quickly cut to the site of a man who's been laid out in the backstage area, being tended to be EMT's. As we zoom in closer, it becomes apparent that the man in question is in fact Brother Brutus. Hulk Hogan comes rushing in, demanding to know what happened, but no one seems to know who took out Brutus, just that he's going to have to be taken to the medical facility.

Cactus Jack vs. "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan

These two just a month ago were tag team champions, but upon losing the title Kevin Sullivan lost his mind and went straight after Cactus Jack. This has resulted in both men fighting it out with one another, a fight which carries over as Cactus is ambushed from behind as he makes his way to the ring. The match barely gets in the ring before it spills out again, going in and out in a seemingly neverending brawl. Referee Nick Patrick tries desperately to assume some kind of control, but in the end is forced to count both men out as they continue to brawl into the back, their issue far from settled.

Gene Okerlund again returns, this time standing by with the United States Champion, Stunning Steve Austin, who is set for a two out of three falls matchup with Ricky The Dragon Steamboat. Austin says his time has come, he's been the US champion for over nine months and nobody has come close to knocking him off the mountaintop. He says Steamboat might have been able to, ten years ago when Steamboat was in his prime. But the fact of the matter is that Steve Austin is the best young athlete in the world, and Steamboat is just living on borrowed time. He says The Dragon will be extinguished tonight, once and for all.

WCW World Television Title Match

Lord Steven Regal w/Sir William © vs. Johnny B. Badd

The pursuit of championship gold has been a constant goal for Johnny B. Badd, in particular the pursuit of Steven Regal's TV Title. The match starts off as many of their encounters do, with Regal using his technical ability and underhanded tactics to keep Badd off his feet and slow the pace of the match. Johnny B. Badd thought he had the match won after catching Regal with his Tutti Frutti knockout punch, but Sir Williams surreptitiously put his employers feet in the ropes. Regal took control after the momentary distraction, and locked Badd in a Regal Stretch, only for Badd to counter. The clock ticked down until Badd hit another KO punch in the closing seconds, only for the time limit to expire, frustrating Badd yet again.

A highlight video is shown, chronicling the feud between The Guardian Angel and Big Van Vader, as both men have beaten the hell out of each other over the last few months. The next match between the two will be a Last Man Standing match, so the hope is that finally this issue will be laid to rest.

Last Man Standing Match

Big Van Vader w/Harley Race vs. The Guardian Angel

Neither man wastes any time in going at each other, the intention to knock the other man out for a ten count. The Angel is more than a match for Vader's strength and power, but the deceptive quickness of the Rocky Mountain Monster throws him off. Vader nearly scores the win after a powerbomb on the floor, but the Angel is able to get to his feet at an 8 count. Angel gets a Guardian Slam on Vader on the floor, which nets the same result. The brawl between the two sprawls out all over the arena, finally finishing back in the ring. With The Guardian Angel rallying, Harley Race interjects himself into the match, and distracts him long enough for Vader to hit the Angel from behind. Vader holds The Angel for Race, who slaps on some brass knuckles and tries to drill him, only for The Guardian Angel to duck out of the way and for Race to drill Vader. Vader falls over like a sack of potatoes as The Guardian Angel tosses Race outside the ring. The referee counts to ten and just like that, it's over.

The World Tag Team Champions come out next, gloating to the world that no one in WCW has come forward to claim the open challenge they laid out two weeks earlier. Knobbs says this proves that everyone else is afraid of the Nasty Boys, but they're here and ready to kick someone's rear end, so he invites any two schmoes in the back to come out and fight them. Saggs says that whoever it is, they are going straight on a trip to Pitty City. However, they, and the rest of the world...are quickly shocked by familiar music and two men WCW hasn't seen in a good long while...

Gordon Solie is back once again, this time with the Man Called Sting and "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes. Sting says that when Dustin Rhodes needed someone he could count on against the Stud Stable, he didn't have to look any farther than the Stinger, and that tonight Terry Funk and Bunkhouse Buck are going to get what's coming to them. Rhodes says this matchup had enough emotion behind it, but then Terry Funk had to make things personal and insult his father in the process. Rhodes says tonight he's going to grab the Coal Miner's Glove, and drill Funk in the head until he can't see straight anymore, and that Funk will learn to respect The Natural.

Coal Miner's Glove Tag Match

Bunkhouse Buck & Terry Funk w/Col. Robert Parker vs. Sting & "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes

This was a dragdown brawl from the word go, as Dustin Rhodes was bound and determined to get his hands on Terry Funk. Sting and Bunkhouse seemed to take a backseat to the other two men in the ring, though both tried to gain the use of the Coal Miner's Glove early. Funk seemed to put Sting out of the match, hitting a piledriver on the outside, allowing the Stud Stable to double team Rhodes for a time. But Sting came back and took Buck out of the match, allowing Rhodes to get the Coal Miner's Glove and use it to pound Funk's face in a couple of times before hitting a bulldog and scoring the pinfall.

Gene Okerlund is standing by with the challenger for the WCW World Title tonight, Hulk Hogan, first asking him about the condition of Brother Brutus. Hogan says that Brutus had to leave the building and won't be returning, and he admits his other good friend, Jim Duggan, had to do the same. But, he added, if Ric Flair thinks that means that Hogan is all alone tonight, then he's dead wrong. He's got the thousands of Hulkamaniacs in the building tonight, and all around the world watching at home behind him brother. He says that the momentum has been building for weeks, and that Hulkamania is set to be unleashed all over the WCW and Ric Flair. Okerlund says that obviously Flair seems up to something, but Hogan shrugs it off. He knows Flair was probably the one who took out Brother Brutus, but that it doesn't matter. Because tonight, in that ring, he's going to prove that he's a better athlete and better wrestler than Ric Flair, and he's gonna walk out of Orlando, with the WCW World Heavyweight Title Belt.

Two out of Three Falls Match for the WCW United States Championship

"Stunning" Steve Austin © vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

These two bitter rivals put on a technical classic for the fans, a slow-paced but hard hitting match with several near falls and breathtaking moments. Austin scored the first fall with a school boy rollup, holding the trunks as he did so. For a while it seemed as if Steamboat would be swept, but a missed dropkick from the champion followed by a cross body block from the top rope resulted in Steamboat evening the score. The Dragon hooked on a Figure 4 Leglock, trying to win the second fall by submission, but Austin was able to turn the submission around and force a break. Austin hit a Stun Gun out of nowhere, and then followed it up with a new move, a front face lock neckbreaker out of nowhere that knocked out Steamboat and allowed Austin to score the well earned victory.

This is followed by the challenger, the Immortal Hulk Hogan, accompanied to the ring by Jimmy Hart, in another special entrance. The crowd ate both of these up, with both scoring the same rating, a testament to the equality of the two men.

WCW World Heavyweight Championship Match

"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair w/Sensuous Sherri vs. Hulk Hogan w/Jimmy Hart

The atmosphere was electric as both men simply stared each other down, before hooking up in center ring. Hogan used his strength early on, catching Flair by surprise on a few occasions and displaying a limited degree of technical knowledge. At one point Hogan even got Flair in a Single Leg Boston Crab, but Flair got to the ropes to break the hold. Flair went to the outside to regroup, and Hogan chased after him. Flair shoved Sherri in Hogan's way, and as Hogan backed off momentarily Flair decked him with a solid right hand, before drilling him facefirst into the ring post.

Flair then took him inside and began working on the knee of Hogan, trying to soften him up for the patented Figure-4. Hogan still fought back on occasion, but the tide was beginning to turn for Flair. Eventually Flair got Hogan down and applied the hold in the center of the ring, trying to will Hogan to submission. Hogan began to feed off the crowd and reversed the hold, causing Flair to break it. Flair tried to go after Hogan, but the Hulkster began to Hulk Up. He drilled Flair with three punches and then tried to hit the big boot, but Flair grabbed referee Randy Anderson and caused him to be knocked out instead. Hogan again went for the big boot on Flair, this time hitting it and then following up with the legdrop. He went for the cover but with no referee present, there couldn't be a count. Schiavone and Heenan though were stunned by what happened next...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/Darbicus/WCW1994/Ron%20Simmons_zpsmzkcknqg.jpg

Ron Simmons came from the back out of nowhere, and drilled Hogan from behind. Simmons goes over and checks on Flair, before Simmons begins putting the boots to Hogan, but the Hulkster still managed to eventually fight back and hit the big boot on Simmons, and then countering an attempted Ric Flair cheapshot with another clothesline. At that point, another man ran in...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/Darbicus/WCW1994/Steve%20Austin_zpsncvfsmzx.jpg

Steve Austin, who had apparently been hiding under the ring this whole time, came out from underneath and drilled Hogan in the back of the head with the US Title. Austin and Simmons then put the boots to Hogan, with Sherri disposing of Jimmy Hart on the outside. From the back, however...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v349/Darbicus/WCW1994/Arn%20Anderson_zpslegayibi.jpg

Arn Anderson came running out, chair in hand. Anderson chased off Austin and Simmons, dropping the chair in the center of the ring as he did so. Hogan slowly got back to his feet, beaten down by the onslaught, and when he turned around...The Enforcer quickly drilled him with a Spinebuster onto the Steel Chair. Flair came around and quickly draped his hand on Hogan as the referee came to as well, as the other three men celebrate on the outside as Flair scores the victory to the shock of everyone.

Tony Schiavone is in shock as the four men stand tall over the fallen Hulk Hogan, hugging each other and high fiving one another over a plan come together. Sherri drapes the World Title over Flair's shoulder, and to Schiavone's shudder and Heenan's delight, all four men lift up the telltale sign. Four fingers high in the air signifying that WCW is once more put on notice. The 4 Horsemen ride again, as Bash at the Beach comes to a close.

Ron Simmons is definitely an interesting choice for a Horsemen, but a good one nonetheless. He has that no nonsense butt kicking attitude like Arn and Tully. Same with Austin.

Keeping the belt on Flair is a controversial move all things considered, but it definitely left me wanting to read the next chapter.

July: Week 4 News and Notes

- There is a good feeling following the success of Bash at the Beach, as WCW shattered their old PPV buyrate record on the strength of the Hogan/Flair showdown.

- Hogan was initially unhappy with the planned finish of the World Title Match, which apparently only had Arn Anderson running down for interference. The decision was then made to add the other two 4 Horsemen into the mix, combined with Hogan looking strong and he agreed to the job. It was always planned that the Horsemen would return, but Ron Simmons identity as the 4th Horseman was apparently a last minute decision.

- Marcus Bagwell arrived late to Bash at the Beach, and that very well could have cost his team the victory. Like a trooper The Patriot took the fall, but Bagwell is apparently on thin ice at the present moment.

- Alex Wright is said to be exhausted, having just recently finished splitting his time between America and Japan. It is being guessed he's been given a couple weeks off to recuperate.

- WCW has gone to a 12 month PPV schedule, with the original Clash of the Champions in August, November and January being moved to PPV level events.

- All of the feuds going into Bash at the Beach will continue for at least another month, but expect newer storylines to replace some of these following the next PPV.

I can certainly see that side of it, but there aren't really that many choices. Austin was an obvious choice because really there's no other high level heels that could really work and didn't interfere with other longterm plans I have.

Promo #1: The Horsemen Ride Again

- Gene Okerlund welcomes out the man who is still the World Heavyweight Champion, Nature Boy Ric Flair, but this time he is accompanied by the three men who helped him retain that very title. Flair says that he warned Hogan about facing the dirtiest player in the game. He always had a plan for Hulkamania, a plan that involved the reformation of the most elite group in the history of professional wrestling, the 4 Horsemen.

Okerlund tries to take Arn Anderson to task for turning his back on Hogan, but The Enforcer says that Mean Gene only saw what he wanted to see. He said that Ric Flair had asked him to make a choice, and Arn Anderson did exactly that, he chose to stand with the greatest professional wrestler alive today. He also said he wanted a good match, where the better man won, and in no way shape or form is Hulk Hogan a better man than Ric Flair.

Okerlund asks about the other two memebrs, to which Anderson replies that the Horsemen have always been about two things, respect and excellence. And as far as excellence goes, you can't find better than Ron Simmons or Stunning Steve Austin. Ron Simmons is the one of only men to ever have his jersey retired by the Florida State Seminoles football team, the only African American to ever hold the Heavyweight Championship of the World, and without a doubt one of the toughest men in the sport today. And Steve Austin, the United States Champion. A former television champion, former tag team champion. And if you doubt his qualifications, look no further than last week when he beat Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat one on one right in the center of the ring.

Flair chimes in that the Horsemen are back, and Hulkamania is going to be stopped dead in its tracks. He reiterates that the Clash of the Titans, was a one time affair, and it'll be a cold day in hell before Hulk Hogan gets another shot at the Heavyweight Championship of the World.

Match #1: Johnny B. Badd d. Bunkhouse Buck

- Fresh off his frustrating time limit draw with the TV Champion, Johnny B. Badd took his frustrations out on another loser from Bash at the Beach in Bunkhouse Buck. It is a fairly even match, with Col. Parker distracting Badd at one point, but Johnny eventually put away the man from Bucksnort with a Tutti Frutti Knockout Punch.

Segment #1: Rhodes' Challenge

- While Col. Parker is collecting Bunkhouse from the ring, The Natural Dustin Rhodes comes out to send him a message. He says he's tired of Terry Funk dodging him, and wants to fight The Last Outlaw one on one, and he's willing to put his career on the line to do it at Clash of the Champions.

Match #2: The Steiner Brothers d. Tex Slazenger & Shanghai Pierce to retain the WCW Tag Team Championship

- The New Tag Team Champions, shocking everyone one week earlier with their unannounced return to WCW. They got back to work in fine form this week, successfully defending their titles against Tex and Shanghai with relative ease, although certainly the Nasty Boys are likely looming with their rematch clause in the near future.

Match #3: Big Van Vader w/Harley Race d. Joey Maggs

- Vader was in no mood to suffer fools this week, pissed off after losing to The Guardian Angel thank to an errant strike from Harley Race. He took the young Joey Maggs and absolutely squashed him, obliterating him in less than 5 minutes.

Segment #2: Vader's Revenge

- Race gets a microphone and starts to make excuses for Vader, but Vader simply grabs the mic and speaks for himself. He says he's dealt with the Angel for long enough, and what he wants is one final confrontation with the man. Vader says he will destroy anyone and anything who gets in the way of him facing The Guardian Angel one more time.

Promo #2: Hogan on Flair

- Okerlund is backstage with Hulk Hogan, who appears angered at Ric Flair earlier. He says that no matter what kind of politicking Ric Flair thinks he can get away with, the fact of the matter is that the day will come when Hulk Hogan gets his hands on Ric Flair and the 4 Horsemen once again. Even if it means he has to pick through each and every one of them, one by one, he will get even with Flair if it's the last thing he does.

Match #4: Meng d. Rip Rogers

- Meng was strong, per the usual, but his chemistry with Rogers was nil, making this a pretty bad match to watch. Meng wins in a squash.

Segment #3: DDP's Mystery Bodyguard

- Diamond Dallas Page makes his way to ringside, introducing the world to the man who helped him beat Alex Wright at Bash at the Beach and his new bodyguard, Big Charlie.

Match #5: Diamond Dallas Page d. Brad Armstrong

- Page continued his winning ways over one of the Armstrong brothers. Brad actually put up a good showing for himself, nearly scoring the win with his side russian legsweep, but timely interference from Big Charlie saved Page from the pinfall, and DDP quickly applied the Diamond Cutter for a victory.

Match #6: "Stunning" Steve Austin d. "The Living Legend" Larry Zbyzsko to retain the WCW US Title

- Steve Austin's run as champion continues, taking out Larry Zbyzsko in the process. Austin was accompanied to the ring by Ron Simmons, but he didn't need Simmons' involvement in the proceedings to beat the former television champion.

Segment #4: Steamboat's Return

- After Austin's victory, he and Simmons celebrate in the ring, but are interrupted by the arrival of Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. The Dragon merely stands at the entryway to the arena, motioning towards Austin that their feud is far from over, and that they will meet again for that US title.

Segment #5: Simmons' Callout

- As we come back from commercial, Steve Austin appears to have cleared the ring, but Ron Simmons remains behind. He says he has unfinished business with Jim Duggan, and he's calling Hacksaw out to the ring right now. Duggan is more than willing to oblige, but he's quickly ambushed from behind by Austin and Arn Anderson, who lay a beatdown on the All-American.

Match #7: "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson d. Brother Brutus

- It might not have been the man who put Brutus on a hospital bed the week before (that was in fact Ron Simmons), but Arn Anderson would be a welcome consolation. In a back and forth matchup, Brother Brutus actually managed to perform well against The Enforcer, however Anderson's experience and wily ways were more than enough to eventually score a pinfall with the DDT.

Segment #6: The war begins

- After the match, the rest of the Horsemen come out ready to pick the bones of Brother Brutus, but Hulk Hogan comes out steel chair in toe and chases the Horsemen out of the ring, standing tall with his friend as Saturday Night comes to a close.

August, Week 1 News and Notes

- After the television tapings last week, Marty Jannetty (who wrestled a dark match on Saturday Night) and Marcus Alexander Bagwell (who's already in the dog house) both tested positive for soft drug use. Both were given the "fatherly approach," and it went over well, though given Jannetty's history and Bagwell's attitude of late, both are said to be on incredibly thin ice at this point.

- Arn Anderson has been having some minor morale issues for some reason or another, stemming from his heel turn at Bash at the Beach and subsequent gimmick change which didn't seem to work out for the best. He's being given a minor push of sorts to smooth things over, it seems.

- Rip Rogers, who was on a Pay Per Appearance deal, was released early this morning. No reason was given, other than lack of use.

- Clash of the Champions is being booked with a triple main event, with the main match being the battle between Funk and Rhodes, along with a tag match of Flair/Anderson against Hogan/Brutus and a steel cage match between Vader/Guardian Angel.

- James Mitchell has been signed to be the manager for a new group called The Asylum, who debuted at the TV tapings this week.

Match #1: Cactus Jack vs. "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan

- These two enemies seemingly picked up right where they left off at Bash at the Beach, conducting a Pier 6 Brawl between the two of them. This time though the action seemed to stay in the ring, and by the end of the match Jack had gotten the best of Sullivan. However two men, which astute wrestling fans might know as Bill DeMott and Al Snow, came running out of the back and attacked Jack. DeMott led the charge, while Snow was clad in a straight jacket and had a wild eyed look in his eyes. Sullivan joined in the fray, netting the disqualification.

Promo #1: The Guardian Angel

- The Guardian Angel was backstage with Gene Okerlund, and he proceeds to hype his match at Clash of the Champions with Big Van Vader. The match will be a steel cage match, which will keep the energy in the ring and hopefully Harley Race out of it.

Match #2: Sting d. Steve Keirn

- Basically a glorified squash match, as Sting defeated Steve Keirn with relative ease and looked good doing it.

Match #3: Lord Steven Regal & Jean-Paul Levesque vs. Johnny B. Badd & "Flyin" Brian Pillman

- Management was really impressed by the chemistry shown between the young Levesque and Regal as a tag team, which helped make this match work. The two isolated Pillman for most of the match, but a hot tag to Badd turned the tide. The end came, however, when Pillman caught a blind tag from Johnny and ascended the top rope to an unsuspecting Regal, catching him with Air Pillman when he turned around and scoring the upset three count over the TV champ.

Segment #1: The 4 Horsemen Arrive

- We cut to backstage and see the 4 Horsemen arrive in style, in a long limousine. All of them seem to be hyping up Steve Austin, who puts his US Title on the line against Hulk Hogan tonight.

Promo #2: Terry Funk and Dusty Rhodes

- Dusty Rhodes is in the ring and conducts a promo with Terry Funk, who comes out smirking. Rhodes says that he doesn't like what Funk has forced his son into, but Funk says he didn't force Dustin into anything he wasn't stupid enough to get into on his own. Dustin Rhodes, according to Terry Funk, is nothing more than a snot-nosed brat who hasn't earned a damn thing in this business, who only got here because of who his daddy is. The American Dream seems livid at the Funkster, but Terry just smirks at him, and says that at Clash of the Champions he'll bring an end to The Natural, and if Dream gets involved, he'll put his lights out to. Col. Parker then sneaks from behind and slaps Dusty in the back of the head, which causes Dusty to go after him, but Funk counters with a DDT and then locks The American Dream in a Figure-4 Leglock before The Natural comes running to his father's aide, chasing Funk out of the ring.

Match #4: Barry Darsow d. The Patriot

- Barry Darsow looked decent out there against the All-American Hero, but The Patriot got some good offense in two in a match that just helped keep the crowd warmed up. Darsow scored the submission victory with a modified armbreaker called the Barely Legal.

Promo #3: The Nasty Boys

- The Nasty Boys are backstage with Gene Okerlund, who mentions their match for the tag team titles coming up next. The Nastys say that at Bash at the Beach, they were caught off guard by the cowards the Steiners, who came in unannounced. But here tonight, they are ready and able for a fight, and are going to take back the tag team titles for a fourth time.

Match #5: The Steiner Brothers d. The Nasty Boys to retain the WCW Tag Team Titles

- This match was a lot more competitive than the match they had a few weeks earlier, as the Nastys were clearly more prepared. But the tandem teamwork of the Steiners proved to be too much again, as the Steiners scored another victory over the former champions and keep their winning streak and titles in tact.

Segment #2: Celebration

- After the match, the Steiners celebrate in the ring. The announcers make mention of Harlem Heat, who have been named the new #1 contenders to the titles and will face the Steiners at Clash of the Champions.

Promo #4: Ricky Steamboat

- Gene Okerlund is backstage with Ricky Steamboat, who talks about his "final chance" at the US title against Steve Austin, saying it may not even matter, because Austin may not be the champion come Clash of the Champions if Hulk Hogan has anything to say about it. At this point, the title doesn't mean as much as getting his hands on Stunning Steve.

Match #5: "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson d. Marcus Alexander Bagwell

- If Bagwell wasn't on thin ice before, he was after this match when he nearly caused a shoot fight by the normally professional Arn Anderson. Bagwell's lack of selling to Arn really didn't sit well with a lot of people. Anderson did pick up the win, at least Bagwell went for that.

Match #6: Hulk Hogan d. US Champion "Stunning" Steve Austin by disqualification

- Austin came out looking like a million bucks in this one, even with Hogan doing his usual tactics. Hogan does pick up the win, but only by disqualification when Ric Flair interfered. Flair and Austin got out of the ring before Hogan could get his hands on them, leaving Hogan simply pointing at Flair from inside the ring to close the show.

News and Notes for August 1994, Week 2

- The issues between Marcus Bagwell and WCW have reached a head, after he tested positive for soft drugs yet again. As a way of trying to recoup some losses, Bagwell has been sent to rehab for a couple of months and is expected to come back with a retooled image and gimmick. No word on what effect this will have on Del Wilkes, The Patriot, though it's likely he'll be kept around as a low midcard talent for now.

- Stevie Ray recently signed a new long-term contract, which will keep him in WCW for the forseeable future.

- A cruiserweight title is being added to WCW, which explains the new signings of Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Lance Storm and Dean Malenko among others. Word is that some luchadores from south of the border may be next, but not in the immediate future. Expect the title to be decided at Clash of the Champions.

Just skimmed through this in the space of thirty minutes. I like the short, to-the-point write-ups for TV and I appreciate the Fruitloop formula of longer PPV's to make those matches feel more important. Intriguing booking too, keep it up.

Six Man Tag Match

"The Enforcer" Arn Anderson, "Stunning" Steve Austin & Ron Simmons vs. Hulk Hogan, Brother Brutus & Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

I smell a schmozz. DQ written all over it.

Johnny B. Badd vs. Jean-Paul Levesque

An interesting match-up. I was thinking of going with JPL because his team lost last week, but I'll go with Badd because he's not the kind of guy you should sacrifice to give Levesque his heat back.

The Nasty Boys vs. The Heartthrobs

Who are The Heartthrobs? Should I know? :p Anyway, The Nasty's get some heat back.

"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright

Don't waste the Super J Cup winner of '94. Alex Wright is no Great Sasuke.

"The Natural" Dustin Rhodes vs. Bunkhouse Buck

Seems pretty cut and dry in all honesty.

Cactus Jack vs. "The Lunatic" Al Snow

I do not see Jack losing to Snow. He will carry him, as he always did :p, but this is either a clean win or another DQ finish.

Diamond Dallas Page vs. Terry Taylor

Squash, 100%.

Television Results: Week 2, August 1994

Match #1: "The Crippler" Chris Benoit d. "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright

The young Chris Benoit, another cruiserweight who has made his name in recent years over in Japan, faced game competition in the German phenom, Alex Wright. It was a highly competitive match, aided by the natural chemistry the two men have in the ring, which ended when Benoit scored a pinfall via a Dragon Suplex

Promo #1: Dustin Rhodes on Terry Funk

There is a sitdown interview between father and son, as Dusty and Dustin Rhodes talk about the younger's career to this point and what has driven him to put all of that on the line against Terry Funk. Dustin says that he's doing what he feels he has to do, and Dusty reiterates that, while he doesn't agree with his son's decision, he respects him enough as a grown man to stand by him in making it, and that he will be in Dustin's corner for the match at Clash of the Champions.

Segment #1: The Horsemen have a plan

Backstage the 4 Horsemen are seen arriving to the arena in a limousine. Flair breaks off from the main group, who are preparing for tonight's six man tag team main event. Arn Anderson asks Flair where he's going, but Flair says that he has a proposition that he wants to make in the ring tonight, and he doesn't need the Horsemen for that.

Match #2: The Nasty Boys d. The Heartthrobs

The young team of Scotty Stud and Stevie Richards may prove to be future stars, but at the hands of an irate Nasty Boys team they were little more than cannon fodder. Knobbs picks up a victory in what is basically a glorified squash match.

Segment #2: Tag Team Challenge

The Nasty Boys grabbed microphones and said that if the Steiner Brothers think that they are finished with them after last week, they've got a rude awakening in store for them. Knobbs runs down the new #1 contenders, Harlem Heat as well, saying that it doesn't matter which team is the champions, the Nasty Boys are going to go back on top sooner or later.

Match #3: Jean-Paul Levesque d. Johnny B. Badd

Jean-Paul was game competition for the Badd-Man this week, as Johnny is gearing up for a return match with Levesque's new best friend Lord Steven for the TV title in the near future. Still, Johnny appeared to have the match won after hitting a series of great high risk moves, until Lord Steven Regal came out and distracted him, allowing JPL to schoolboy Badd from behind and hold the tights for the cheap tainted victory.

Match #4: "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes d. Bunkhouse Buck

The feud that helped start this whole issue, Buck was walking into a Texas Twister in The Natural, who seemed bound and determined to wipe out the entire Stud Stable before Clash of the Champions, having beaten Bill Irwin and Meng in the last few weeks. Buck was next on the list, and Rhodes pretty much beat him the same as he had the other two. After the match though...

Segment #3: Tough Rhodes Ahead

The Stud Stable came out and attacked Dustin Rhodes, including Terry Funk, Irwin and Meng. With Col. Parker leading the charge, the 4 men tried to end Dustin Rhodes right then and there. However Dusty Rhodes wasted little time in leaving the broadcast booth and coming down to his son's aid, chasing away everyone with a steel chair in toe.

Promo #2: Hogan's Commandos Beta Version

Hulk Hogan, Brother Brutus, and Ricky Steamboat were backstage with Gene Okerlund, as they cut a promo on the three 4 Horsemen that they would be facing in tonight's main event.

Segment #4: Flair's Challenge

Ric Flair comes out to the ring minus the 4 Horsemen, grabbing a microphone and running down Hogan. He says that last week Hogan called him a coward for hiding, but he reminds Hulkster that he had his shot at the belt. Now it's somebody else's turn, and that the next man who comes through that curtain is going to be in for a lucky break because they'll get a title shot next week on Saturday Night. We see a clip of the Gorilla Position, where Terry Taylor is set to go on next, but a man comes from behind and Taylor simply motions for him to go on ahead. Flair continues to extoll his own virtues, until he is blindsided by Sting coming out and accepting his challenge for next week.

Match #5: Diamond Dallas Page d. Terry Taylor

DDP came out with The Diamond Doll and Big Charlie, and continued his winning ways with a victory over veteran Terry Taylor. Taylor put up a fight for a while, but was quickly overcome by Page and finished off with a Diamond Cutter.

Match #6: Cactus Jack d. "The Lunatic" Al Snow

One of the two men who attacked Cactus last week was his opponent this week, and he came to the ring accompanied by his "psychiatric physician" Dr. James T. Mitchell. Cactus came out guns a blazing and, despite some early offense from the Lunatic, finished him off with a double arm ddt in pretty short order.

Segment #5: Sullivan Returns the Favor

After the match, however, Cactus was attacked by Kevin Sullivan, who continued to pound away on his hated rival.

Promo #3: The Guardian Angel

The Guardian Angel was backstage with Gene Okerlund, and proceeded to hype his steel cage match with Vader at Clash of the Champions.

Match #7: "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson, "Stunning" Steve Austin & Ron Simmons d. Hulk Hogan, Brother Brutus & Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

The Horsemen acted as a cohesive unit, and fought a competitive match with the three opponents. Steamboat and Brutus were isolated for much of the match, as Hogan got the bulk of the offense for his team, but in the end it was Stunning Steve who hit his neckbreaker finisher to defeat and pin Brother Brutus. The Horsemen stand tall to close the show.
