WCW 1994: The Clash of the Titans

Recommended Posts

August, Week 3 News and Notes

- The scuttlebutt out of Stamford isn't very good, at least as it concerns one major star who's said to be waiting out the days till his contract ends...

- Management has been pleased with the reaction of the 4 Horsemen and that the crowd seems to be warming up to Hogan, not as a dominant babyface but as one that can hold his own.

- Kevin Sullivan has been given his own stable, called The Asylum, for now, but there are plans for the Taskmaster when his program with Cactus is up.

- The Cruiserweight Title will crown its initial champion at the next PPV, with a ten man gauntlet for the gold match, in which a ten man battle royal begins...with the final two men competing in a one on one match to determine the overall winner.

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match

"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair © vs. Sting

Booooo, title matches on TV, boooo. :p

Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. "The Iceman" Dean Malenko

Jesus christ, why isn't the Main Event? Should be a fantastic match but Steamboat is just a little higher on the totem pole.

"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright vs. Diamond Dallas Page

I can tell you're at least somewhat big on Wright, but beating DDP might be a step too far.

Brad & Brian Armstrong vs. Bad Attitude

Just a hunch.

"The Crippler" Chris Benoit vs. "Pretty" Paul Roma

Roma seems a little directionless.

Cactus Jack & Dave Sullivan vs. "The Lunatic" Al Snow & Hugh Morrus w/Dr. James T. Mitchell

Dave Sullivan seems to be there just to eat a pin.

"Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff vs. Stevie Richards

Cut and dry.

<strong>Match #1: "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff d. Stevie Richards</strong></p><p>

<em>Richards did look good out there, but he was no match in the end for the veteran Orndorff, who puts him away with a piledriver finisher.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #1: Backstage Psyche Up</strong></p><p>

<em>Backstage we see Sting getting ready for the big title match here tonight against Ric Flair. Hulk Hogan drops by his locker room and tells him that he'll stand by him against the Horsemen if it comes to it.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #2: "The Lunatic" Al Snow & Hugh Morrus d. Dave Sullivan & Cactus Jack</strong></p><p>

<em>Cactus tried to find solace in a tag team partner with Dave Sullivan, but Sullivan took the fall by way of a huge moonsault from the big Hugh Morrus called No Laughing Matter. Now I remember why Dave Sullivan and Cactus never teamed that much, because they have absolutely zero chemistry.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #2: A bit of revenge</strong></p><p>

<em>As Morrus and Snow celebrate, Cactus reaches under the ring and grabs a baseball bat that he had apparently placed there, and proceeded to attack both of the members of the Asylum, getting some measure of revenge.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Promo #1: The Guardian Angel</strong></p><p>

<em>Gene Okerlund is backstage with The Guardian Angel who stands ready to face Vader in less than two weeks time at Clash of the Champions, this time inside a steel cage.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Promo #2: Ron Simmons</strong></p><p>

<em>We get some pre-recorded comments from a member of the 4 Horsemen, as Ron Simmons reminds Hacksaw Jim Duggan that he hasn't forgotten about him, and that when the time is right, Ron Simmons and the Horsemen will trample all over Duggan, along with the rest of WCW.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #3: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat d. "The Iceman" Dean Malenko</strong></p><p>

<em>It was a pretty straight forward match all told, but a very competitive one as Malenko matched Steamboat hold for hold at times. Still, The Dragon edged out The Iceman with a cross body block and continued on his path to Steve Austin and the US Title.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #3: Austin Attacks</strong></p><p>

<em>But he wouldn't have to wait too long, as Steve Austin came from the back and attacked Ricky Steamboat. But, amazingly enough, Steamboat managed to fight back and ward off the champion, sending Austin careening from the arena just as fast as he had arrived.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #4: Brad & Brian Armstrong d. Bad Attitude</strong></p><p>

<em>It's been a losing streak for Steve Keirn and Bobby Eaton as a tag team, and this time the younger Armstrong brothers were the beneficiaries, as they finished off Keirn and Eaton in relatively easy fashion with a dual side Russian Legsweep.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #5: "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright d. Diamond Dallas Page</strong></p><p>

<em>Revenge was on the mind for the Wonderkid, as Alex Wright faced DDP in a rematch from Bash at the Beach. For much of the match it looked like Page would manage to get another victory over the German youngster, until Wright came back guns blazing. Big Charlie tried to get involved in the match, unfortunately he found himself accidentally hitting his employer, which allowed Wright to hit the German Suplex and score the victory.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #4: 4 Horsemen Promo</strong></p><p>

<em>A special video, chronicling both the history of the group and the current incarnation is shown.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #6: "The Crippler" Chris Benoit d. "Pretty" Paul Roma</strong></p><p>

<em>Ahead of the cruiserweight battle royal at Clash of the Champions that will determine who the first ever WCW Cruiserweight Champion is, Chris Benoit is staking his claim to the gold with a victory over Paul Roma, finishing him off with a Crippler Crossface.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Promo #3: Terry Funk</strong></p><p>

<em>Terry Funk cut a promo on Dustin Rhodes, a week ahead of the matchup at Clash of the Champions in which Rhodes' career will be on the line.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Promo #4: The Steiner Brothers</strong></p><p>

<em>The Steiner Brothers are backstage with Gene Okerlund, as they conduct an interview about their upcoming title defense against Harlem Heat.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #7: "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair d. Sting by pinfall to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Title</strong></p><p>

<em>These two old rivals met once again for the gold, and like all their other encounters it was a classic. Sting looked like he might win the match on a couple of occasions, but Flair battled back to make it as even as usual. Flair attempted to cheat using brass knuckles, but Hulk Hogan came down to ringside and told the referee, who confronted Flair. Unbeknownst to him or Hogan though, that allowed Steve Austin to sneak in through the crowd and attack Sting, laying him out with the US Title belt. Flair then sinched on a Figure 4, but with Sting knocked out, the referee counted the pinfall.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #5: Hogan Makes Up for it</strong></p><p>

<em>Austin and Flair look to continue their assault on Sting, but Hulk Hogan chases both of them off, ending the show with a standoff with Flair once again.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<p><strong>August, Week 4 News and Notes</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- There's been some kind of major contract signing, as a major talent from "up north" is set to join WCW at some point in September.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- Shanghai Pierce suffered a broken collarbone at the TV tapings this week, but the break appears to be minor and he'll only be out of action for about three weeks. In worse news, new signee Taka Michinoku (who had just been signed and was burning off his remaining dates with Michinoku Pro) suffered a broken neck and will be out for more than a year.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>- There are unconfirmed reports that Marc Mero (better known as Johnny B. Badd) was arrested for DUI earlier this week. What is known is that Mero did participate in television tapings this week, and for reasons that are not quite clear yet, he was removed from the match with Lord Steven Regal at Clash of the Champions and replaced with Brian Pillman.</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #1: "The Crippler" Chris Benoit & Eddie Guerrero d. "Lionheart" Chris Jericho & Lance Storm</strong></p><p>

<em>In a highly competitive matchup between 4 of the cruiserweight contenders, Benoit and Guerrero utilized teamwork to beat the younger tandem of Jericho and Storm, with Guerrero scoring the pin on Storm with a Frogsplash.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #1: Guardian Angel vs. Vader</strong></p><p>

<em>A video package chronicling the feud between Big Van Vader and The Guardian Angel is shown.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #2: Big Van Vader d. Johnny B. Badd</strong></p><p>

<em>Vader continued his reign of destruction as he faced Johnny B. Badd this week, but Badd kept on his toes and tried to hit the big man with quick strikes to wear him down. Badd actually managed to get an advantage late in the match, when he was suddenly tripped up on the outside by Lord Steven Regal. Badd went running out of the ring to attack Regal, not noticing that Vader slipped out under the bottom rope, and as Badd was chasing Regal around he ran right smack dab into a Vader clothesline. Vader then proceeded to powerbomb Badd on the floor and roll back into the ring, as the referee counted out Badd and medical personnel came out to check on Badd.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #2: Badd Days</strong></p><p>

<em>We come back from commercial to see Johnny B. Badd being hauled off in an ambulance, a victim of Vader's onslaught.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Promo #1: The Nasty Boys</strong></p><p>

<em>The Nasty Boys are backstage with Gene Okerlund, who asks the two about their predictions for the tag team title match tomorrow night. Knobbs says they don't care who wins the match, they have issues with both teams and that the tag team titles are rightfully there's anyway. They say that it will only be a matter of time before they are tag team champions again, and that neither the Steiners or Harlem Heat will be the same when they are done with them.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #3: Scott Steiner d. Stevie Ray</strong></p><p>

<em>Booker T had beaten Rick Steiner a few weeks ago, but his brother couldn't match his feat as he fell to the superior athleticism of Scott Steiner. It was a fairly even match that Steiner eventually won with a Frankensteiner.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Promo #2: The Asylum</strong></p><p>

<em>Dr. James T. Mitchell is backstage with his charges, The Taskmaster Kevin Sullivan, The Lunatic Al Snow and Hugh Morrus, collectively known as The Asylum. Cactus Jack, not exactly a sane individual in his own right, has called out The Asylum for a 3 on 1 Handicap Match at Clash of the Champions, which Mitchell is all too happy to accept, as Mitchell says Cactus Jack will meet his maker tomorrow night.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #3: Austin vs. Steamboat</strong></p><p>

<em>A video package of the feud between Steve Austin and Ricky Steamboat is shown.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #4: Not Waiting for Sunday</strong></p><p>

<em>Our cameras cut to the backstage area, where security is trying to break up a fight between The Guardian Angel and Big Van Vader, who seem bound and determined to destroy one another before their big cage match this Sunday.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #4: The Heartthrobs d. Tex Slazenger & Shanghai Pierce</strong></p><p>

<em>Scotty Stud and Stevie Richards reversed their losing ways as they managed to defeat Tex and Shanghai in a fairly easy fashion, moving themselves up a bit further on the tag team ladder.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #5: An open challenge</strong></p><p>

<em>Ron Simmons is backstage with Gene Okerlund before his main event match with Hulk Hogan. Simmons says that he will take Hogan out before Clash of the Champions, and the rest of the Horsemen will finish the jobs on Steamboat and Brutus tomorrow night. He is then approached by Sting, who says that his dance card is empty for tomorrow, and he's more than willing to throw his hat in the ring against the Horsemen and challenges Simmons to a match then and there.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #6: Ric Flair Commentator</strong></p><p>

<em>Ric Flair comes out for this next matchup to provide some color commentary for his opposition.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #5: Brother Brutus d. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff</strong></p><p>

<em>Brother Brutus faced a man who's been on something of a role in Paul Orndorff, in a match that was far from a technical classic. Still, Brutus managed to find a way to win, stealing a page out of the Nature Boy's book and winning with a Figure-4 Leglock. After the match, Flair and Brutus had a bit of a staring contest, with Flair promising to make him pay for his insolence tomorrow night.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Segment #7: A challenge for the future</strong></p><p>

<em>Before our main event, Stunning Steve Austin comes out and says that, after he gets done with The Dragon tomorrow night at Clash of the Champions, that he will take on any comers for his US Title. To that end, he issues a challenge to one man to try and take him out right now, calling out Sting. True to form Sting comes out of the woodwork, but lying in wait are Ron Simmons and Arn Anderson, who attack the Stinger from behind and leave him lying on the mat.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #6: Hulk Hogan d. Ron Simmons</strong></p><p>

<em>Pretty standard stuff, as Hulk got a game tuneup from Ron Simmons. Simmons actually dominated much of the match, using his power to upstage Hogan from the opening bell, but the Hulkster got his second wind as he often does and managed to score a victory over one of the Horsemen with his vaunted legdrop finisher.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n623/Chrononaut79/clash27.png</span><p> </p><p>

<em>This version of the Clash of the Champions is the first one to actually air on Pay Per View, as WCW has gone to a 12 PPV schedule, and with four titles on the line it promises to be a huge night, with a triple main event to boot.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Singles Match with Rhodes' Career on the Line</strong></p><p><strong>

"The Natural" Dustin Rhodes w/"The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes vs. Terry Funk w/Col. Robert Parker</strong></p><p>

<em>The issue between the Stud Stable and Dustin Rhodes has devolved into a personal feud between Terry Funk and Rhodes, with pride and honor on the line. Frustrated with his inability to get Funk in a one on one match, The Natural agreed to put his career on the line against the Last Outlaw. Though he didn't agree with his son's decision, The American Dream has decided to stand tall with his son and watch his back tonight, with everything on the line.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Tag Team Grudge Match</strong></p><p><strong>

"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair & "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson vs. Hulk Hogan & Brother Brutus w/Jimmy Hart</strong></p><p>

<em>Since his stunning victory at the Bash at the Beach, the World Heavyweight Champion has lorded over Hulk Hogan, saying that a rematch will never happen. Hogan, eager to get his hands on Flair once more, agreed to this tag match where he will team with his best friend, Brother Brutus, who has his own score to settle with the Horsemen who laid him out at the Bash, in particular Arn Anderson who had blindsided Hogan and cost him the big match in the first place.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Steel Cage Match</strong></p><p><strong>

Big Van Vader w/Harley Race vs. The Guardian Angel</strong></p><p>

<em>It had been hoped that the Last Man Standing Match would have been enough to end this vicious feud, but alas it was not meant to be, as Vader and The Guardian Angel continue to do battle with one another. With both of these behemoths surrounded by a fifteen foot high steel cage, the hope is that now they will be able to settle their differences once and for all without any interference.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Submission Match for the WCW United States Championship</strong></p><p><strong>

"Stunning" Steve Austin © vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat</strong></p><p>

<em>The issues between these two men have continued to fester, especially after their two out of three falls match last month tore the roof off the building. Steamboat has been granted a "last chance" at the US Title, this time in a submission match, to try and dethrone the long running champion. But Austin, newly joined with the Horsemen, certainly has something up his sleeves.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WCW Tag Team Title Match</strong></p><p><strong>

The Steiner Brothers © vs. Harlem Heat</strong></p><p>

<em>Their surprise return at Bash at the Beach has caused the Steiner Brothers to go on a huge winning streak, but they face their toughest challenge yet in the #1 contenders, Harlem Heat, who are always on the cusp of tag team gold but have yet to break through. Will this finally be their time, or do the Steiners have more gas in the tank. And of course, with the Nasty Boys looming around the corner, what role might they play?</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Gauntlet for the Gold for the WCW Cruiserweight Title</strong></p><p><strong>

"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright vs. "Lionheart" Chris Jericho vs. Lance Storm vs. "The Iceman" Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero vs. Stevie Richards vs. Scotty Stud vs. Disco Inferno vs. Marty Jannetty vs. "The Crippler" Chris Benoit</strong></p><p>

<em>The newly created WCW Cruiserweight Title will be on the line in a unique "Gauntlet for the Gold", starting off in a ten man battle royale until just two men remain. Once that happens, then the only way to win will be by pinfall or submission, with the last survivor becoming the inaugural champion.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>3 on 1 Handicap Match</strong></p><p><strong>

Cactus Jack vs. "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan, "The Lunatic" Al Snow & Hugh Morrus w/Dr. James T. Mitchell</strong></p><p>

<em>With the feud between former tag team partners Kevin Sullivan and Cactus Jack boiling over, Sullivan enlisted the aide of these two madmen and their psychotic psychiatrist. Cactus Jack didn't seem to mind, given his own mental issues, and ever several weeks of fighting he has challenged all three members of The Asylum to a Handicap Match.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Sting vs. Ron Simmons</strong></p><p>

<em>Two of the biggest names in WCW square off with nothing more than pride on the line. Sting's been targeted by The Horsemen as of late (no real surprise there given the history), and he decided to be proactive about it and challenged Ron Simmons to a match at Clash of the Champions, which Simmons was quick to accept.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WCW World Television Title Match</strong></p><p><strong>

Lord Steven Regal w/Sir William © vs. "Flyin" Brian Pillman</strong></p><p>

<em>Lord Steven was initially set to defend against Johnny B. Badd at the Clash, but Badd's run in with Vader (with some help from Regal) caused him to suffer a concussion and be ruled out of active competition at the Pay Per View. Rather than let Regal skate on a technicality, the Championship Committee ruled that Regal would instead defend against Brian Pillman, the man who had pinned Regal in a tag match a couple of weeks earlier.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Diamond Dallas Page & Big Charlie w/The Diamond Doll vs. Brad & Brian Armstrong</strong></p><p>

<em>Diamond Dallas' ego continues to grow by leaps and bounds, even after suffering a loss thanks to his bodyguard's ill advised efforts recently. The two continue to work as a team, and DDP will try to take out the Brothers Armstrong in this tag team match.</em></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

No real special questions this time, but feel free to predict how things will go. Show should be up this weekend.</p>

<strong>"The Natural" Dustin Rhodes w/"The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes</strong> vs. Terry Funk w/Col. Robert Parker</p><p>

<em>I could realistically see Dustin Rhodes as the "character" being fired, but as a talent? No way are you letting go of him, and no way is he losing to Funker on the way out.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Tag Team Grudge Match</p><p>

<strong>"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair & "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson</strong> vs. Hulk Hogan & Brother Brutus w/Jimmy Hart</p><p>

<em>Hogan defeated Simmons and in all honesty, Brutus is seemingly there just to eat a pin. I think Flair & Anderson are a strong bet here.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Steel Cage Match</p><p>

<strong>Big Van Vader w/Harley Race</strong> vs. The Guardian Angel</p><p>

<em>Most certainly, Vader has a very high ceiling. You can do serious things with him whereas Traylor is a little restricted. Vader should win the feud for sure.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Submission Match for the WCW United States Championship</p><p>

<strong>"Stunning" Steve Austin ©</strong> vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat</p><p>

<em>I think Austin will make a better Champion. Besides, shouldn't you really elevate Steamer?</em></p><p> </p><p>

WCW Tag Team Title Match</p><p>

<strong>The Steiner Brothers © vs. Harlem Heat</strong></p><p>

<em>The Nasty Boys will get involved, that's for sure. A No Contest seems a safe bet here and a three-way between these teams will be an excellent match. I'll go for the ref throwin' this one out.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Gauntlet for the Gold for the WCW Cruiserweight Title</p><p>

<strong>"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright</strong> vs. "Lionheart" Chris Jericho vs. Lance Storm vs. "The Iceman" Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero vs. Stevie Richards vs. Scotty Stud vs. Disco Inferno vs. Marty Jannetty vs. "The Crippler" Chris Benoit</p><p>

<em>I love Jericho, and Storm, and Malenko, and Guerrero, and Benoit, jesus. But they're the obvious choice. What you need is a quality first Champion to build a division around and Alex Wright is the man for that. He can wrestle, he can talk, he's young and he should have great matches with all of the aforementioned Cruiserweights.</em></p><p> </p><p>

3 on 1 Handicap Match</p><p>

Cactus Jack vs. <strong>"The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan, "The Lunatic" Al Snow & Hugh Morrus w/Dr. James T. Mitchell</strong></p><p>

<em>I could see Cactus getting some assistance, but not before he gets beaten. He can get be kept strong in defeat though, and this feud can continue for the next few months.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Sting</strong> vs. Ron Simmons</p><p>

<em>I'm not sure where I stand with Simmons. I like him and I liked the storyline that led to him winning the World title, but I think he's the fall guy in your Horsemen. He could beat Sting, that could happen, but at the same time, do you really want Sting losing to Ron Simmons of all people? I don't know.</em></p><p> </p><p>

I love Funk, but Dustin needs this win far more.

Like Mootinie, I think Brutus is only there to get pinned.

Steel Cage Match

Big Van Vader w/Harley Race vs. The Guardian Angel

I've always liked Ray far more than Vader. Ray never really got his due and he's a more positive influence backstage, but Vader is far more over than him.

Austin retains.

The Steiner Brothers © vs. Harlem Heat

I'm calling for a no contest when the Nasty Boys interfere.

Gauntlet for the Gold for the WCW Cruiserweight Title

"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright vs. "Lionheart" Chris Jericho vs. Lance Storm vs. "The Iceman" Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero vs. Stevie Richards vs. Scotty Stud vs. Disco Inferno vs. Marty Jannetty vs. "The Crippler" Chris Benoit

Eddie is the perfect person to start the Cruiserweight Title off on the right foot. Fantastic in the ring, insanely entertaining and never has a bad match. There are a lot of good candidates in the match, but at this point in time only Eddie, Dean, and Benoit are credible champs, but Eddie is the total package in the ring and out.

3 on 1 Handicap Match

Cactus Jack vs. "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan, "The Lunatic" Al Snow & Hugh Morrus w/Dr. James T. Mitchell

I love anything James Mitchell is involved in, but I just don't think Cactus takes it here.

Sting vs. Ron Simmons

I'll never pick against Sting...

WCW World Television Title Match

Lord Steven Regal w/Sir William © vs. "Flyin" Brian Pillman

Regal's reign should never end...ever.

Diamond Dallas Page & Big Charlie w/The Diamond Doll vs. Brad & Brian Armstrong

Brad is super underrated, but BG is nowhere near ready to be more than a jobber. DDP and Charlie need the victory anyway.

Pre-Show

Meng won a 15 Man Battle Royale (C+)

Barry Darsow d. Terry Taylor (C-)

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan d. Louie Spicolli (D+)

-----

Match #1: "Flyin" Brian Pillman d. Lord Steven Regal by pinfall to win the WCW Television Championship

While Regal may have originally been prepared to face Johnny B. Badd, he seemed like he was ready for Flyin Brian as well. There was a long back and forth between the two, and it looked like Regal would win the match at several points, but he could never quite find a way to finish off Pillman. Sir William did get involved, but only to Regal's detriment, as Regal was sent careening into him thanks to a Pillman dropkick. Flyin Brian then nailed the Air Pillman on Regal, giving him the victory and netting him his first TV Title victory.

Match Rating: B-

Segment #1: Pillman celebrates

As Flyin Brian celebrates winning the TV Title, he is joined in the ring by the man who's place he took, Johnny B. Badd. Pillman raises his hands in victory as Badd celebrates with him.

Segment Rating: C

Promo #1: Terry Funk

Terry Funk is backstage with Mean Gene Okerlund, as they talk about the career threatening match with Dustin Rhodes tonight. Funk says that Dustin is just a punk kid trying to avenge the fact that Funk beat up his old man time and again back in the day, and tonight he's not only going to be put in his place but put out of the business for good.

Promo Rating: C+

Match #2: Diamond Dallas Page & Big Charlie d. Brad & Brian Armstrong

DDP and Big Charlie had no problem adapting together as a team on this night, as they faced game competition from the brothers Armstrong. They even managed to hit Page with their double side russian legsweep finisher, but Page was able to kick out at two and eventually he finished off the match with the Diamond Cutter and picked up the victory.

Match Rating: C

Match #3: "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright won a Gauntlet for the Gold to win the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Ten men were vying to become the first ever WCW cruiserweight champion. Starting off in a battle royal, the competition was fast and furious until it came down to Alex Wright facing off with Eddie Guerrero. At that point, the match became a standard one fall to a finish, and while Guerrero nearly won the match with a brainbuster, an ill-timed attempt at a Frogsplash allowed Wright to come back, moving out of the way and then hitting the German Suplex to score the pin and become the first ever champion.

Match Rating: C

Promo #2: The Guardian Angel

Backstage once again with Gene Okerlund, The Guardian Angel is interviewed about his upcoming steel cage match with Big Van Vader. He says that Vader is nothing more than a common bully, a street thug that deserves to be locked up behind more bars than a steel cage. He says this time there will be no question, no Harley Race to get involved, and this time The Guardian Angel will but down Vader once and for all.

Promo Rating: B-

Match #4: Sting d. Ron Simmons

As Sting has become a target of the 4 Horsemen, he decided to go on the offensive by challenging Ron Simmons here tonight. Simmons has been tough since joining the elite group, and he dominated much of the match. However, things changed once "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan appeared at ringside, distracting Simmons. The Stinger fought back valiantly, hitting a Stinger Splash a couple of times in the corner before finishing off Simmons with a Scorpion Deathlock.

Match Rating: C+

Match #5: The Asylum d. Cactus Jack

The Asylum, Al Snow, Kevin Sullivan and Hugh Morrus, were taking on the demented Cactus Jack all at once at Jack's own request. Jack held his own for much of the match, taking out Snow and Morrus at various points and keeping the match between himself and Sullivan as much as possible. The numbers game eventually won out though, and Sullivan proceeded to lay a beatdown on Jack that finished off with a Hugh Morrus moonsault for the victory.

Match Rating: C

Promo #3: Steve Austin

Backstage, Steve Austin is interviewed by Eric Bischoff, who asks him about Ricky Steamboat's "last chance" at the US Title. Austin says that Steamboat is lucky to get this chance. He says he's tired and moved on to the cream of the crop in WCW. As a member of the 4 Horsemen, Steve Austin is concerned with one thing, and one thing alone, and that is dominating the WCW, so after he's done dealing with The Dragon tonight, Stunning Steve is going to be looking for bigger fish to fry.

Promo Rating: B-

Match #6: Big Van Vader d. The Guardian Angel in a Steel Cage Match

This was not an escape rules cage match. The cage was designed to keep both men in and everyone else out. And it turned out to be a huge brawl between the two men, as they beat the hell out of each other unmercifully, with both men being busted open the hard way during the course of the match. In the end, Vader hit The Guardian Angel with a huge powerbomb, and then followed that up with a large splash from halfway up the cage to secure the pinfall and the victory, maybe settling the issue once and for all.

Match Rating: B

Match #7: The Steiner Brothers & Harlem Heat wrestled to a No Contest

The Steiner Brothers and Harlem Heat engaged in a great match for the tag team titles, with obviously the Nasty Boys looming in the distance against either one of these teams. It was a back and forth affair, with neither side really giving an inch, before finally it looked as if The Steiner's were closing in on victory. The Nasty Boys ran in at that point, attacking both teams mercilessly and causing the referee to throw the match out at that point.

Match Rating: C+

Segment #2: Dusty Rhodes & Son

Backstage, Dustin Rhodes is gearing up for his match with Terry Funk in the main event tonight. He is approached by his father and cornerman tonight, Dusty Rhodes, who says that no matter what happens tonight, he has never been more proud and honored of anything he's done in the wrestling business, then standing in his son's corner tonight. He says that tonight, win lose or draw, he is the proudest father in the world.

Segment Rating: B-

Match #8: "Stunning" Steve Austin d. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat by submission to retain the WCW United States Title

This match was Steamboat's last chance to gain the United States Championship from Steve Austin, with the added stipulation of being a submission match. Though he is far from a mat general, Austin came prepared against one of the best in the business, and the two men traded hold for hold for 20 plus minutes. In the end, Steamboat appeared to come close to the match being one with a Figure-4 Leglock, but Austin reversed the pressure and forced the Dragon to break the hold. Austin then, taking a page out of his new mentor's playbook, applied a Figure-Four of his own, and eventually Steamboat was forced to tap out.

Match Rating: B+

Segment #3: How did we Get Here...

A video segment is shown, chronicling the feud between Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair up to this point, including the reformation of the 4 Horsemen, and the challenge for tonight's tag team match.

Segment Rating: B+

Match #9: Hulk Hogan & Brother Brutus d. "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair & "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson by disqualification

The goal of the Horsemen in this tag match was seemingly to avoid Hulk Hogan at all costs, isolating Brother Brutus and using quick tags to keep him in there corner. Hogan did manage to get in once or twice early on, but quickly the Horsemen reestablished dominance, until Brother Brutus was able to counter an Arn Anderson DDT and then tagged in Hogan to finally get his hands on Flair again. Hogan came in 24 inch pythons blazing. Flair and Anderson were unable to come back, it seemed, and in front of full view of the referee Flair hit a low blow on Hogan that resulted in the disqualification, and letting the Horsemen off the hook. Flair and Anderson left quickly to the boos of the crowd.

Match Rating: B-

Match #10: "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes d. Terry Funk

With Dustin Rhodes' career on the line, he fought with everything he had against the wily veteran, who also didn't hold anything back. The referee seemed to be lax on the countout rules, wanting there to be a definitive winner between the two. Near the end of the match, Funk hit not one, but two piledrivers on Dustin Rhodes, seemingly ending his career, but Rhodes somehow instinctively got his foot under the ropes. Funk then tried a third piledriver, but Rhodes countered with a backdrop. Meng at that point tried to get involved, but Dusty Rhodes was willing to attack the savage beast, hitting him and Col. Parker with a bionic elbow on the outside. Rhodes got his second wind and eventually hit a Bulldog on Funk to score the pinfall and gain a measure of revenge against the veteran, keeping his career in tact.

WCW Week 1, September 1994 News & Notes

- Brass was a little disappointed with the main event between Dustin Rhodes and Terry Funk, but most are chalking it up to fatigue on the part of Funk. His contract was set to expire on Wednesday this past week and it was not renewed, though management is not opposed to bringing him back in the future.

- Cactus Jack suffered a knee injury at Clash of the Champions, and will be out for a couple of weeks.

- As announced this week at the television tapings, the main event of Fall Brawl will be a five on five War Games match, with one side consisting of The 4 Horsemen and an as of yet unnamed participant against a team of Hulk Hogan's choosing.

- The decision has been made to turn The Guardian Angel heel and revert him back to his Big Bubba Rogers persona of years gone by, as they felt he had stagnated as a face recently against Vader. The heel turn occured at ths past week's television tapings.

- It is unknown whether or not Johnny B. Badd, who was originally supposed to be in the match against Steven Regal at Clash of the Champions, would have won the television title in that match as his replacement, Brian Pillman did. Badd was back at television this week, none the worse for wear.

<strong>Match #1: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat d. Maxx Muscle by pinfall</strong></p><p>

<strong>Segment #1: Four Horsemen Promo</strong></p><p>

<em>Flair and the 4 Horsemen were present with Gene Okerlund, as Flair reitterated that Hogan would never get another opportunity at his world championship belt. <strong>Match #2: "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan d. The Patriot by pinfall</strong></p><p>

<strong>Segment #2: Steiner Brothers interview</strong></p><p>

<em>The Steiner Brothers are backstage with Gene Okerlund, talking about the ongoing issues with both Harlem Heat and with The Nasty Boys. <strong>Match #3: Lord Steven Regal d. Johnny B. Badd by pinfall</strong></p><p>

<em>In a matchup of what was supposed to happen one week earlier at Clash of the Champions, Lord Steven defeated Johnny B. Badd due to help from his newfound ally in Jean-Paul Levesque. <strong>Segment #3: Pillman for the Save</strong></p><p>

<em>After the match, Regal and Levesque try to gain up on Johnny B. Badd, but the newly crowned World Television Champion makes his way to the ring to make the save for Badd. The two faces stand tall in the ring, though Badd makes it clear that he's after Pillman's title as well.</em></p><p>

<strong>Segment Rating</strong>: C-</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #4: "The Iceman" Dean Malenko d. Disco Inferno by submission</strong></p><p>

<em>Disco was clearly overmatched by The Iceman, as Malenko took the dancing fool to school, finishing him off in impressive time with his Texas Cloverleaf submission hold. Afterwards he motioned around his waist, signifying that he was coming for Alex Wright's cruiserweight gold.</em></p><p>

<strong>Segment #4: Vader time</strong></p><p>

<em>Backstage once again, we here from Harley Race concering The Man They Call Vader. <strong>Segment Rating:</strong> B-</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match #5: The Guardian Angel d. Dave Sullivan by referee stoppage</strong></p><p>

<em>Obviously The Guardian Angel was in a foul mood this week after his dealings with Vader, and took it out excessively on Dave Sullivan. <em>Segment #5: That's Not Enough...</em></p><p>

<strong>But it wasn't enough for The Guardian Angel, who continued to beat down Sullivan until security came from the back to try and control him. </strong><strong><strong>Match #6: "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes d. Diamond Dallas Page by pinfall</strong></strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><strong><em>But the distraction wasn't enough for The Natural to be derailed, even with outside interference from Big Charlie. </strong><strong><strong>Match #7: "Stunning" Steve Austin & Ron Simmons d. Hulk Hogan & Sting by countout</strong></strong></p><p><strong>

</strong><strong><em>The two horsemen were quick to use underhanded tactics to try and win this match, keeping the Stinger on his toes for much of the time. Hogan did manage to get into the match a couple of times, squaring off with both Simmons and Austin, and when it seemed as if he might finish off Austin with his legdrop finisher, Ric Flair wandered off and distracted Hogan long enough for him to be drawn outside. The ambush was then on, as Arn Anderson came from under the ring and attacked Hogan while the referee was distracted, resulting in a countout victory for the Horsemen.</em></strong></p><p><strong>

Ric Flair comes out styling and profiling. He gets on the microphone and states to anyone who runs afoul of the Horsemen, that this is the fate that awaits them. He says that Hogan is at the top of their list, but anyone who sides with the Hulkster is going to feel the full wrath of the Horsemen as well.

Segment Rating: A

Match #2: Harlem Heat and The Nasty Boys fought to a double countout

The bad blood between the two top contenders to the tag team titles was palpable, and the two teams certainly had it out for each other. There wouldn't be a chance for one team to establish dominance over the others, as the referee quickly lost control of the situation and the match ended in a double countout with both teams brawling to the back.

Match Rating: C+

Segment #3: Lord Steven Regal

Lord Steven is backstage with Gene Okerlund, running down the rematch that he has scheduled with Brian Pillman at Fall Brawl. Okerlund asks him about his relationship with Jean-Paul Levesque, but Regal merely states that Levesque and he share something in common, namely their high class status in a cesspool like this. He says that Pillman will find that out tonight when he faces Levesque one on one.

Segment Rating: C+

Segment #4: An offer he can't refuse?

The Natural Dustin Rhodes is out for a match, but he is interrupted by Arn Anderson. The Enforcer talks about Rhodes' natural ability, and the fact that he managed to outlast one of the toughest men in this sport in Terry Funk. He says that Dustin "shouldn't be forced to live in the large shadow of his old man any longer" and offered him the chance to strike out on his own, as the partner of the Horsemen at the WarGames at Fall Brawl. Rhodes doesn't give an answer, and AA leaves with everyone questioning what is to come.[/b]

Segment Rating: C+

Match #3: "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright d. Stevie Richards to retain the Cruiserweight Championship

Alex Wright's first title defense went about as well as could be expected, as he took one half of the Heartthrobs and showcased exactly why he is the first ever cruiserweight champion, beating the challenger with a German suplex for the win.

Match Rating: D+

Segment #4: A new challenger appears.

As Wright is celebrating his victory, Dean Malenko makes his way out and grabs a microphone, challenging Das Wunderkind to a title match at Fall Brawl. Wright accepts, eager to face all comers.

Segment Rating: D

Segment #5: A Cactus challenger...

Kevin Sullivan is backstage with Dr. James Mitchell, and the two are talking about how to finish off Cactus Jack once and for all. Sullivan says that Jack needs to be taught a lesson about punishment, and that he intends to make it a long, drawn out punishment, saying that at Fall Brawl, if Jack wants to find two partners to save his sorry skin this time, he's more than welcome to try.

Segment Rating: B-

Match #5: Vader d. The Patriot

Vader seemed to make good on the promise of Harley Race last week to go on a tear to destroy anything in his path. Unfortunately for him, The Patriot was the first thing in said path, and the All-American was laid waste by the Rocky Mountain Mastodon.

Match Rating: C

Segment #6: A new challenge for Vader?

Vader doesn't appear to be content to just destroy The Patriot, seeming eager to want to end his career. That is, until Ricky The Dragon Steamboat appears and challenges Vader to try and bully him around. Vader looks ready to go, but Harley Race intervenes and Steamboat is left standing tall.

Segment Rating: C+

Segment #7: Hogan Backstage...

Hulk Hogan is backstage with Gene Okerlund, preparing for his US Title match with Stunning Steve Austin. Hogan says Austin is just like the rest of the Horsemen, a cancer on professional wrestling that Hulkamania will withstand, just like its withstood everything else thrown at it. And tonight, Austin is going to find out just what the power of Hulkamania can do .

Segment Rating: A

Match #5: "Flyin" Brian Pillman d. Jean-Paul Levesque by disqualification to retain the TV Title

Pillman and Levesque had a very evenly paced matchup, and at certain points it looked as if the Frenchman would in fact pull out a victory, but Pillman eventually turned the tide. Right after Pillman hit the Air Pillman, Lord Steven Regal came to ringside and attacked him, resulting in the DQ victory.

Match Rating: C+

Segment #8: Badd Company

As Regal and Levesque attacked Pillman, Johnny B. Badd decided to return the favor from the week before, as Badd came to the defense of the television champion. Once again the two foreigners were left with their tails tucked between their legs, as this issue between the two is likely far from over.

Segment Rating: C

Match #6: Hulk Hogan d. Stunning Steve Austin by countout (Austin retains the title)

Stunning Steve and Hulk Hogan faced off in a donnybrook fight, as Austin was frustrated by his inability to keep the Hulkster down for any length and period of time. The match continued in a back and forth fashion until Austin had had enough and decided to walk out on the match. Sting appeared at the entryway to discourage him otherwise, but pretty soon the rest of the Horsemen were joining the fight, as Brother Brutus also came involved to help his team out. The seven men were left fighting as the match officially is a countout victory for Hogan.

Match Rating: B

Segment #9: The Rhodes less traveled

As the Horsemen eventually get the best of the three Hulkamaniacs, Dustin Rhodes comes out with a chair. He at first seems to side with the Horsemen, but eventually turns on them and dispatches them all with the chair. The show ends with Dustin Rhodes standing tall with Hogan's team, his allegiance in this war clear.

The battle lines are drawn and the sides are set as WCW presents Fall Brawl; home to perhaps the most brutal match in professional wrestling history, the War Games. Plus three other title matches and several other grudges coming to a head.

5 vs. 5 WarGames Match

Hulk Hogan, Brother Brutus, Sting, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan & "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes vs. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson, "Stunning" Steve Austin, Ron Simmons & Big Bubba Rogers

The Clash of the Titans continues to dominate WCW, as now several people have been drawn in to the conflict. Flair challenged Hogan to the War Games, in an effort to stamp out Hulkamania, and Hogan responded by drafting a cadre of individuals to stand up to the Horsemen, including Sting, Brother Brutus & Jim Duggan. Dustin Rhodes was initially offered the fifth spot on the side of the Horsemen, but he spurned them in favor of joining with Team Hogan. Undeterred, The Horsemen drafted Big Bubba Rogers to their side for this ultimate 5 on 5 showdown.

Triangle Match for the WCW Tag Team Championship

The Steiner Brothers © vs. Harlem Heat vs. The Nasty Boys

Ever since the Steiners returned to WCW and took the title belts from the Nasty Boys, Knobbs and Sags have been gunning for revenge. Enter into this equation the tandem of Harlem Heat, who have been patiently awaiting their opportunity at the gold as well. Following a botched title defense at the Clash of the Champions, all three teams will look to settle the score once and for all as the belts are on the line, with the disadvantage to the Steiners that they don't have to be pinned to lose the titles.

Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. Vader w/Harley Race

In recent weeks, Vader has become a man obsessed with finding a challenger that's worthy to face him. However his obsession has caused him to destroy lesser opponents, drawing the ire of the noble veteran Ricky Steamboat, who has challenged Vader in this grudge match to maybe stop the bullying mastodon in his tracks.

WCW Television Title Match

"Flyin" Brian Pillman © vs. Lord Steven Regal

Flyin Brian shocked the world when he substituted for Johnny B. Badd at Clash of the Champions and went on to defeat Lord Steven Regal for the television title. Regal's return match will take place at Fall Brawl, and with full time to prepare to face Pillman, Lord Steven feels good about his chances to recapture the television title once more.

WCW Cruiserweight Title Match

"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright © vs. "The Iceman" Dean Malenko

Following his big win at Clash of the Champions to become the first ever WCW cruiserweight champion, Alex Wright has proven himself to be a fighting champion, eager to defend his title against all comers. His next challenge will come in the form of the man of a thousand holds, Dean Malenko, who's vast knowledge of submission holds and different styles could prove to be the undoing of Das Wunderkind.

Cactus Jack, Brad Armstrong & Brian Armstrong vs. "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan, Hugh Morrus & "The Lunatic" Al Snow

The continuing feud between the former tag team champions has spilled over into an all out gang war, with Sullivan recruiting these two maniacs in Al Snow and Hugh Morrus along with their "physician" Dr. James T. Mitchell to form The Asylum. Cactus Jack has finally found allies of his own, in the form of Brad & Brian Armstrong, and hopes to take out the Asylum when the sides are even now.

Jean-Paul Levesque vs. Johnny B. Badd

Though Johnny B. Badd may not be receiving a television title shot now, he has allied himself with the TV champion against the newly formed alliance between the Bluebloods of Steven Regal and Jean-Paul Levesque. Badd hopes he can help his new found friend by keeping Levesque occupied for this one on one bout, and thus keep the title match a one on one affair as well.

Pretty Wonderful vs. The Thrillseekers

The young tandem of "Lionheart" Chris Jericho & Lance Storm has proven to be a daring tag team of some repute thus far, but they will face the toughest competition they've ever seen in the form of the veteran tandem of Pretty Wonderful, "Pretty" Paul Roma & "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff.

Plus, there are rumors abound that a major announcement will take place at Fall Brawl concerning someone's arrival to WCW. Who might it be, or could it be some other huge announcement, stay tuned to this Sunday to find out.

5 vs. 5 WarGames Match

Hulk Hogan, Brother Brutus, Sting, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan & "The Natural" Dustin Rhodes vs. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson, "Stunning" Steve Austin, Ron Simmons & Big Bubba Rogers

Hm.. I see "The Natural" taking the pin here, not sure from who, maybe Bubba? Hogan has all the momentum, so he'll "lose" here in a match he doesn't have to take the fall.

Triangle Match for the WCW Tag Team Championship

The Steiner Brothers © vs. Harlem Heat vs. The Nasty Boys

Harlem Heat pin The Nasties to win the titles -- Steiners just too good to remain together in '94.

Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat vs. Vader w/Harley Race

I love the Steamer, but he's just too old to win this one. Going with "Vader Time"

WCW Television Title Match

"Flyin" Brian Pillman © vs. Lord Steven Regal

Flyin' Brian retains as he just won.

WCW Cruiserweight Title Match

"Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright © vs. "The Iceman" Dean Malenko

Malenko is not a cruiserweight. Yes, I know he was a cruiserweight, but so was... well everyone at one time or another.

Cactus Jack, Brad Armstrong & Brian Armstrong vs. "The Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan, Hugh Morrus & "The Lunatic" Al Snow

Guys on the right have more cohesion.

Jean-Paul Levesque vs. Johnny B. Badd

JPL gets the victory and the Royal Alliance goes 1-1.

Pretty Wonderful vs. The Thrillseekers

Pretty Wonderful are Pretty Old at this point. Seekers on the way up -- terrific team.

<p>Team Horsemen - <em>Making Sting or Dustin submit is most likely, probably the only way Flair can get a little bit over in the feud.</em></p><p>

Harlem Heat - <em>A big title change going on, the Heat start their path toward 9 title runs!</em></p><p>

Vader - <em>"The Dragon" is probably slowing down by now.</em></p><p>

Flyin' Brian - <em>He just gained the belt, so he keeps it here in a match that goes 14:59.</em></p><p>

Alex Wright</p><p>

Cactus/Armstrongs - <em>Jack hasn't gotten much traction in this feud, so a win here can start to put him on track.</em></p><p>

JPL - <em>Should be a big win for young Levesque.</em></p><p>

Thrillseekers - <em>Unless you plan on putting PW in title contention, I don't see much reason for them to win here over the youngsters.</em></p>
