THE GDS POKEMON LEAGUE CHALLENGE

The GDS Pokemon League Sheet - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d_kdTbyTi6NHdTKbZdpxyKBAhq60a3oizbIKZcl1cNw/edit?usp=sharing

CONCEPT

Pretty simple really, we get to play at being Pokemon trainers and become Pokemon masters by playing against each other and also working together to help fill our Pokedex too. Everyone can be a challenger, some of us will be Gym Leaders specialising in a particular type, some of us will make up the Elite Four and one of us will be The Champion. Winning all of our fights will lead to joining the Hall of Fame for that season, and it's from this Hall of Fame that will set up the game for the next season so that we can reorganise all the gyms, Elite Four and Champions to keep things fun and fresh. Below are the rules I've come up with to try to keep things balanced and interesting for players of varying skill levels and dedications.

THE SET-UP

All players at every level will have to submit their friend code in order to play online and compete with each other, which will come with the added benefit of being able to do Friend Safaris and access to the excellent Pokemon that come from that. I will set up a spreadsheet with all of the useful information on it, which will help us all to keep track of wins and losses too. Since we can only play in one generation of games at a time, I'm going to limit this purely to Generation 6 games (X / Y / Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire) but other generations of games can be set up by anyone willing to run them assuming there is enough demand. For the sake of balance I am going to suggest the following rules for Challengers each season (pending discussion)

Each Challenger is allowed 10 Pokemon per season

Each Challenger is allowed 1 Legendary Pokemon on their team per season

Each Challenger is allowed no more than 1 starter Pokemon (and their evolutions) OR 1 Pseudo Legendary Pokemon. They may replace their Legendary Pokemon with either of these it they wish.

NO Primal version of Pokemon allowed.

NO Legendary or Pseudo Legendary Pokemon is allowed to Mega Evolve

There are no limits on Held Items

Once a Pokemon is used in Battle it must be recorded on the GDS Pokemon League spreadsheet

I feel that these rules will ensure that people are able to put together a team but doesn't unbalance the game too much towards people who have raised dozens or hundreds of Pokemon. This will make the balance of fighting Gym Leaders more strategic too, as you can't just load up on a team of powerful starter pokemon like Charizard, Blaziken etc to take down a Grass Type gym, for example.

GYMS AND GYM LEADERS

Just like in the games and the anime, each Gym will be the home of a specific type of Pokemon. There are 18 types of Pokemon in total so it is possible to have 18 types of Gyms and 18 Gym Leaders per season. In order to advance to battle the Elite 4 a Challenger must gather eight Badges by beating eight Gyms, meaning that the more people we have playing this the more flexibility we have in terms of challenges to be made and hopefully fun to be had. Gym Leaders can also be Challengers if they want, and they automatucally get a badge from their own gym. Here are the suggested rules for Pokemon usage (pending discussion)

Each Gym Leader can use any pokemon as long as it's default type includes their particular Gym type (an Electric type Gym Leader must only use pokemon default to Electric types, for example)

Each Gym Leader is allowed 1 Legendary Pokemon on their Gym team per season

Each Gym Leader is allowed no more than 1 Starter, Pseudo Legendary or Legendary Pokemon on their team for any Gym Battle.

NO Primal version of Pokemon allowed.

NO Legendary or Pseudo Legendary Pokemon is allowed to Mega Evolve

There are no limits on Held Items

And here are the suggested rules for Gym Battles (pending discussion and player preferences)

Gym Battles should be 3 against 3 and continue until one side has no Pokemon remaining

The Gym Leader and Challenger MUST each bring ONLY the pokemon they intend to use (due to certain moves being able to bring out other pokemon, therefore possibly breaking the 3 vs 3 rules)

After a battle, the Gym Leader would be responsible for the following too:

Recording any of their opponent's Pokemon used in battle

Adding an “X” in the right place for a failed challenge and a “O” for a successful challenge

Hopefully these rules bring a balance between Challengers picking a team and Gym Leaders specialising in a particular type of Pokemon making them a little more predictable. By having only 3 vs 3 battles I feel that it will also give Challengers the chance to hide some of their team for a while, which should give them options on what to do later on and allow them to spring surprises if they do well while going through the Gym stage of the competition. With that said, I would be happy to give Gym Leaders freedom to decide how many pokemon can come to a fight, with options on using 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3 and Rotation Battles (but not Inverse Battles) if they want to and the challengers accept those terms. This also gives Challengers the chance to go up against as many gyms as they want so that they may be able to get as many of the 18 possible badges if they want to, giving more ways to play the game and master your inner Gary Oak. :p

THE ELITE FOUR

Having gained at least eight Gym Badges, Challengers can compete against The Ellite Four in a series of tough battles for the right to face The Champion. Unlike in the game and anime, I have decided that the Elite Four are able to bring in pokemon of whatever types they want to have, making them more difficult to prepare for and therefore tougher than the Gym Leaders so far (in theory). The Elite Four can also be Challengers if they wish, meaning that they will automatically be considered to have beaten one of the Elite Four since they can't fight themselves. Here are my suggested rules (pending discussion):

Each of the Elite Four is allowed 8 Pokemon per season

Each of the Elite Four is allowed 1 Legendary Pokemon on their Elite Four team per season

Each of the Elite Four is allowed no more than 1 starter Pokemon (and their evolutions) OR 1 Pseudo Legendary Pokemon.

And here are the suggested rules for Elite Four Battles (pending discussion):

Elite Four Battles should be 6 against 6 and continue until one side has no Pokemon remaining (pretty simple really!)

After a battle, the Elite Four are also responsible for:

Recording any of their opponent's Pokemon used in battle

Recording any of their own Pokemon used in battle

Adding an “X” in the right place for a failed challenge and a “O” for a successful challenge

By this stage of the game I imagine the Challengers would have most of their team revealed, which is why the rules for the Elite Four's team is very similar, but smaller so as to not give them to much of an advantage in preparing for challengers. I'm hoping that this gives a good balance of competitive vs fun but as with everything, it's up for discussion. And if you can beat all of the Elite Four, you can move on to face the Champion!

THE CHAMPION

There can be only one! Much like the Elite Four, the Champion should be one of the toughest fights around and their team is likely to be packed with strong pokemon. The Champion can choose to be a Challenger too if they want to, though obviously they won't be able to face themselves at the end of the journey. With that said, in order to stay balanced with the rest of the game I would impose almost identical rules as the Elite 4 when being the Champion (pending discussion):

The Champion is allowed 10 Pokemon per season

The Champion is allowed 1 Legendary Pokemon on their Elite Four team per season

The Champion is allowed no more than 1 starter Pokemon (and their evolutions) OR 1 Pseudo Legendary Pokemon.

And here are the suggested rules for Champion Battles (pending discussion):

Champion Battles should be 6 against 6 and continue until one side has no Pokemon remaining (pretty simple really!)

After a battle, The Champion are also responsible for:

Recording any of their opponent's Pokemon used in battle

Recording any of their own Pokemon used in battle

Adding an “X” in the right place for a failed challenge and a “O” for a successful challenge

The only difference I made here is the number of Pokemon the champion can use, giving them a slight champion's advantage over them by being a little harder to predict but it would still only be a narrow one. But if you win here, congratulations! You've succeeded in becoming a Pokemon Master (at least on GDS) and will hopefully help to shape the future of the game.

THE HALL OF FAME & FUTURE SEASONS

I figure that the game will have people come and go from time to time and that is likely to necessitate some roster changes at every level of the game, so I'd hope to run this game in seasons probably lasting two or three months at a time. At the end of each season we'd need to restructure for a new season, giving people the chance to takeover gyms, become members of the Elite Four and crown a new Champion. With that in mind, each season we would have a Hall Of Fame made up of people who have completed the challenge (therefore very active participants) and active gym leaders. The spreadsheet used to track wins and losses would be able to give us a quick look at who is active too, so we'd know who would be good in any particular role for the future, giving this a great chance to keep rolling on season after season.

I'd suggest that as a community we nominate a new Champion and Elite Four from a combination of Hall of Famers and people who manage to get lots of wins. I'd also like to suggest that anyone nominated to the Elite Four/Champion would also be able to be a stand-in for Gym Leaders if necessary in case people disappear and we need to replace them. Similarly, if an Elite/Champion goes missing then I'd hope for Gym Leaders to be able to step up to fill those voids if necessary too.

As a minor rule, IF a gym keeps the same Gym Leader between seasons then I would consider anyone who has already won that badge to be eligible to keep it the following year. The Challenger's team may change, but if they have won the badge already then they've won that badge. However, if the Gym Leader changes then the badge will change too, meaning that everyone would have to challenge again.

I'm looking to start this around February 1st 2016 to give people the chance to talk about it and get some ideas going. I'll be happy to add anyone and everyone who plays to my friend list for trades and the like in the run up to that and I'm always happy to talk Pokemon if people want to. I've called dibs on being the Normal type Gym Leader and I think I will act as Champion for Season 1

So... any questions? And more importantly, any takers? :D

I should probably add my details too. I have mostly been playing X but also have Sapphire and a very nice looking pokedex for anyone looking to pick up any pokemon. My friend code is 3067-7710-3227, and my Friend Safari type is Dark with Pawniard, Cacturne and Inkay. :)

All info being added to the spreadsheet as I see it. :)

I knew there would be pokemon fans on here... I will be lurking around and hopefully pulling some more people in. If anyone has any particular roles they'd like to play other than Challenger, let me know. So far I've got myself as a Normal type Gym Leader and Season 1 Champion (unless anyone else has the skillz) and MLT would like to be the Electric type Gym Leader. Season 2 will see people get shuffled so don't worry if you pick something just now and want to change. :)

Also, as long as there are spaces I am happy to keep adding people as the season progresses too. The more the merrier. :)

Awesome, welcome aboard. :D My DS will be on for the next few hours so if anyone is wanting to do my Friend Safari you should be able to get all three of the pokemon there for a while. :) I'm adding all the friend codes to the sheet as I go too, so I should be an easy add for anyone adding me. :) And if anyone is looking for trades, I should be able to help out too. I'll try to remember to keep poking my head in here. :)

I wish they had this in Ruby.

Oh well. I plan to pick up either X or Y in a few weeks, just haven't decided which to get yet. Suggestions would be nice.

:p

/ShockingYouAll. :p

X's mascot is pretty fun to use.

Also, shouldn't this still work if you've got Omega Ruby? Just won't be able to use some items in online battle is all - stuff like the OR exclusive mega evolutions.

MLT is just talking about the Friend Safari. :p But ORAS does have lots of other Megas, several legendaries, secret bases and some move tutors to make things better over there... so there are some definite advantages! Naturally... I have one from each side to try and get as many of the good things as I can. :p

I'm just glad I have Pokemon Bank, makes it so much easier to play in X and pick up some moves from Sapphire... which I still need to play a lot more of too. :)

Have been thinking of any possible issues we could have with the rules and realised that people might want to use more than one version of the same pokemon. With that in mind, I'd suggest that people can use the same pokemon but no more than one of them per battle. So you could have a few different builds of Lucario for example, but only use one of them per fight. It may open things up a little but since it would be very hard to enforce rules against it AND it would be a lot of effort for people to change a lot of moves and EVs on a pokemon then it just seems easier this way. :)

In non-existent news, i just finished my pokedex on Sapphire and had already completed it on X. Means I've got some pokemon to give away if people want them, or for the very tricky ones I can at least loan them to you for a bit to help get more complete. :)

Still hoping for more people to sign up, but sign ups can keep rolling onwards all the time. And roleplaying in the thread is actively encouraged. :D

I don't fully understand the concept but I'm in. I need to read through the first post again as I did skim through it but yeah, I've been itching for a good reason to play again. My friend code is 4699-8654-4294. I'll add everyone on here now.If someone could tell me what my friend safari Pokemon are that would be great as I don't have a clue.

Cool I've read through again sorry for the double post but I'm so excited. I would like to be an ice type gym leader please. Wanna give vanilluxe the love they deserve. Really good idea. I hope we get enough people together to really pull this off it sounds like so much fun. Actually fighting gym leaders who you can't just breeze through. Being a champion sounds so hard to be and if anyone does beat the champion they will surly feel like one. This is going to be great.

Added. :) You have a Ghost type safari and the first 2 pokemon on it are Lampert and Phantump. Can't see the third just now but will be back on later if you so that I can have a look. :)

I'm getting excited for this more and more by the day. I've got a few new recent additions to my team but I have no idea what pokemon I'm going to end up bringing along as a challenger. I suspect by time there is a role to challenge the champion I will have added a few more to the team again.

And as ever, if anyone wants to trade then give me a shout. I won't be able to fill up everything in your pokedex but I should be able to save you hours and hours of work by loaning you some of the trickier ones. :)

Ohh cool, shiny chandelure looks great all orange and shiny. I'm building my team now. Never run a hail team before so looking forward to that. I found an awesome shiny legendary in one of my boxes I didn't even know I had with perfect ivs in the five stats I wanted and a great nature. So hyped. Haven't played in ages having to look up the natures on bulbapidia it's been so long I've forgot them. The sooner I get this team together the better I need to have a few practice battles before we start. There's so much depth to Pokemon, I've got a fairly good memory but I'm struggling to remember all the moves and what type is super affective to what. I used to battle daily now I feel like a novice.

Same if anyone wants to trade I've got some good stuff you can borrow to breed also most rare legendaries Celebi, shaymin, keldeo etc... You can borrow to fill your dex.

Also I have doubles in most vivillion patterns so you are welcome to keep them and same with legendaries also you are welcome to them. I don't need anything In return.

I may take you up on the offer of some event legendaries, I have very little chance of getting any of them and it would be nice to completely fill my pokedex after all these years. :) Ones I don't have are Celebi, Jirachi, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect, Hoopa (not been released here yet), and Volcanion (also not released yet).

I do also need Mew, but there is a distribution event happening here in the UK (and maybe elsewhere?) in February at Game stores, so I'll be grabbing some then. I'm gonna grab as many codes as I can, so if anyone needs a Mew, give me a shout and I'll send you the codes via PM when I get them. :)

I may also have another player joining soon, and they've shown interest in being a Psychic type gym leader too. So that will be fun and I hope you'll welcome them to the boards if/when they join. :)
