WCW SATURDAY NIGHT

-World Championship Wrestling presents WCW Saturday Night taking place from the Macon Coliseum in Macon, Georgia. We have learned that there will be a major announcement this evening from the WCW Championship Committee. That announcement will be leading off WCW Saturday Night and we are told it will be absolutely earth-shattering. What will that announcement be and how will it affect the future of World Championship Wrestling? Only one way to find out.

-We have a major main event this evening as two former world champions step inside the ring to face off against each other. Those two former champions, of course, are Tommy Rich and Ric Flair. Both of these men are excellent wrestlers. Which of these two men will step up in action? The winner of this match should definitely be lined up to face the NWA World Champion Sting in the future.

-In other action, we will see a rematch from Starrcade as the NWA United States Champion Lex Luger steps inside the ring against the Lariat Stan Hansen. The Bad Man From Borger Texas has been steaming since losing the title to Luger at Starrcade. Luger has been celebrating this victory since Starrcade. Which man will walk out from WCW Saturday Night heading to the pay window?

Brian Pillman - Rogers will make a neat JTTS, but Brian is on the rise.

Steiner Brothers - My prediction: pain.

Michael Wallstreet - Simple squash.

Junkyard Dog - Bobby, unfortunately, isn't on the main event stage like JYD is. But I suspect this to be some type of lame duck DQ win.

Lex Luger - Hansen's AJPW commitments make him not very viable to push.

Ric Flair - Tommy had one long, long ago moment, and this moment will not be recaptured.

Saturday, week 1, January 1991

Taped from the Macon Coliseum, Macon, GA.

Broadcast via TBS at Late Evening...

WCW presents...

WCW SATURDAY NIGHT

NWA No More?

The show opens at the WCW podium here on WCW Saturday Night. Standing by is an unknown gentleman wearing a suit.

Unknown Man: "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Eric Bischoff and I am the public representative of World Championship Wrestling's Championship Committee. I am here on WCW Saturday Night to make the announcement that World Championship Wrestling has removed our association with the National Wrestling Alliance. We believe that this move is what is best for business on both sides and we wish nothing but the best for the NWA in the future. In response, the NWA has made the decision to strip all WCW contracted wrestlers of their NWA titles, including the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Sting. This is unfortunate as this leaves WCW without any champions. But the Championship Committee was prepared for this and has made arrangements for new titles to be commissioned. The first of those new titles that were made was the WCW World Television title. This title will be decided tomorrow on the Main Event inside of a ten man battle royal. The other titles will be decided at the Clash of the Champions at the end of this month. More information on these titles will be given next week. Thank you wrestling fans."

Eric Bischoff turns and walks away from the podium as we move toward the ring for our opening contest.

Match #1: No Falls Are Counted In The First Five Minutes; 10 Minute Time Limit

Rip Rogers vs. Brian Pillman

This opening contest lasts a little longer than, perhaps, it should have. But that is due to the no falls in the first five minutes clause in the contract. Several pinfall attempts are made during that first five minutes but the referee doesn't count due to the stipulation in the match. Pillman catches and brings Rip Rogers down with the tornado DDT and begins to play to the crowd. Nearing the eight minute mark, Pillman escapes to the apron and waits for The Hustler to get to his feet. He springboards off the top rope -- Air Pillman! He connects with the springboard lariat! Pillman makes the cover and scores the three count.

Brian Pillman p. Rip Rogers =C+

Pillman Versus The Horsemen

A huge victory is scored tonight by Brian Pillman. He joins Lance Russell at the interview stage, shaking hands as the crowd cheers for Pillman.

Lance Russell: "Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I am here right now with the man who just scored a victory over Rip Rogers, Brian Pillman. Brian, thank you for joining me here tonight. We have just recently received word that next week you will be stepping into the ring with a former World Champion Ric Flair. What kind of strategy do you have going into this contest?"

Brian Pillman: "First of all, it is great to be here with you, Lance Russell. Your credentials are known by anyone who follows professional wrestling. Speaking of credentials, you have to talk about the man, Ric Flair. Ric, everyone in this business has respect for you as one of the best professional wrestlers of all time. But it only takes one time. It only takes one time for me to hit Air Pillman and pin you in the middle of the ring. That one time is going to happen next week on WCW Saturday Night. That one time is -- what is going on here?"

Brian Pillman's reaction is justified as all four members of The Four Horsemen have walked out from the back. They all walk onto the interview stage and Ric Flair has a smile on his face. The Horsemen are loudly booed.

Ric Flair: "First of all, all you fans need to shut up. My shoes cost more than your house. Second, Brian Pillman, you think there is one time where you can pin The Nature Boy's shoulders to the mat? There isn't one time where you're fit to wear my wrestling boots, pal. Now you have made the huge mistake of stepping into the path of the Four Horsemen. Take a good look around, Brian, because I only see one of you and I see four of us. That means that we have the clear advantage over you. I will tell you this, 'Flyin' Brian,' you better enjoy walking this week because next week I am going to take you to school and I am going to break your leg in the Figure Four."

Ric Flair releases a 'Whoo' in the face of Brian Pillman and Pillman responds with a slap to the face of Flair! Pillman shoves Flair backward and Flair is caught by Arn Anderson while Sid Vicious and Barry Windham step forward, attacking Pillman! Pillman tries to fight back but the numbers game is too much for him to take. Flair leads the assault on Pillman and Pillman is left lying on the ground as a swarm of security steps in. Flair struts across the stage and releases another 'Whoo' as the Four Horsemen raise four fingers and walk away.

Match #2: 10 Minute Time Limit

The State Patrol vs. The Steiner Brothers

Our second match of the night is a tag team match featuring two veteran tag teams. This is a match filled with action, especially early on as we see all four men start out in the ring. The Steiner Brothers clear the ring with a couple of Steinerlines. Rick barks around the ring and then drops on all fours with Scott standing over him in the typical Steiner pose. The State Patrol gets in a little offense during this match but the focus is definitely on The Steiner Brothers. Rick catches Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker with an overhead belly to belly suplex and in comes Scott. Scott lifts Parker on his shoulders as Rick heads to the top turnbuckle -- Top Turnbuckle Bulldog! Rick makes the cover as Scott stands guard and the three count is issued.

The Steiner Brothers p. The State Patrol =C

Computerized Man Of The '90's

Alexandra York and Michael Wallstreet are shown giving a pre-taped promo.

Alexandra York: "Tonight, all you WCW fans get the opportunity to take a good look at the computerized man of the 1990s, Michael Wallstreet. Ever since Wallstreet has become a part of the York Foundation, his wrestling has been absolutely flawless. I can trace that flawlessness back to this computer that tells him exactly what he needs to do every single match. Tonight is going to be the same when he steps into the ring with Keith Hart. After putting all of the information into the computer, it has been determined that he will defeat Keith Hart in less than seven minutes. With that said, I do have a major announcement to make tonight. Next week, I will be introducing the newest member of the York Foundation. This is a hand-picked wrestler that the computer has said we can mold into the perfect wrestler like we have molded Michael Wallstreet. We will see you tonight."

Michael Wallstreet adjusts his tie and we cut to another video.

Badstreet U.S.A.

This second pre-taped promo features the two men from Badstreet U.S.A.: The Fabulous Freebirds!

Michael Hayes: "Ladies and gentlemen, it starts like this: rock and roll and kicking butts is our business and business is good. As a matter of fact, it's real good. But what the Freebirds are looking for is a title shot for those United States tag team titles. We have been looking for that tag team title shot for a long time and it just hasn't been coming to us. So Eric Bischoff, WCW Championship Committee, take a good look at the Freebirds. We are your best tag team in the United States. We can prove it if you give us the opportunity. Tell it to them Jimmy Jam."

Jimmy Garvin: "Michael P.S. Hayes, can you see me? I can definitely see you. But it seems like the WCW Championship Committee cannot see us. Well, it looks like we are going to have to make an impact here in WCW again. The Birds are getting sick and tired of sitting around and waiting for someone to come up to us and say that they're going to give us a title shot. So at the Clash of the Champions, we're either fighting for the United States tag team titles or we will take out whoever it is that's in our way. You'd be crazy to get in the way of the Birds, though. We are going to get our title shot."

The Fabulous Freebirds pose as we move back to the ring.

Match #3: 10 Minute Time Limit

Michael Wallstreet vs. Keith Hart

Michael Wallstreet and Keith Hart go all out in this one. Hart actually puts on a clinic in the beginning of this match, frustrating Wallstreet at every turn. Wallstreet makes a quick comeback against Hart when Hart goes for a dropkick and misses the mark. Wallstreet brings Hart over with a belly-to-back suplex and then listens to Alexandra York from ringside. He goes right in and lifts Hart, bringing him down with the Stock Market Crash. Wallstreet goes right into the pin and scores the victory in six minutes and nineteen seconds, well under the seven minute mark that York predicted earlier tonight.

Michael Wallstreet p. Keith Hart =D

Lunatic Coming

Another pre-taped promo is shown this week featuring Norman The Lunatic. Norman is shown with a WCW background and an oversized teddy bear in his hands.

Norman The Lunatic: "Sid Vicious, last week you attacked me on WCW Saturday Night. You shouldn't have done that. It wasn't very nice. But everyone knows that you're not a very nice guy. That's why, next week, right here on WCW Saturday Night, I am going to get my revenge on you. Then when I beat you I will let you apologize to me and maybe we can be friends. Maybe I'll even let you hold Yogi here. I think that maybe you would like that. I know that a lot of people tell me that my elevator doesn't go to the top. Well, I know that it doesn't go to the top. But it goes right to my heart. As long as you people are here with me, then it will continue to go straight to my heart. Thank you."

Norman rubs the head of the teddy bear and turns and walks off as we go back to the ring.

Match #4: 10 Minute Time Limit

Bobby Eaton vs. Junkyard Dog

Our fourth match of the night features the tag team veteran Bobby Eaton against the power of the fan favorite Junkyard Dog. The two wrestlers are able to tell a pretty good story in the ring with JYD using his power and Eaton using some cheap tactics to regain the advantage. The action spills outside the ring where Eaton sends JYD crashing into the steel steps. Eaton rolls JYD back inside the ring where he brings the Dog down to the mat with a swinging neckbreaker. The crowd gets behind JYD, clapping their hands and stomping their feet as they to bring him back into the contest. JYD gets a short burst of momentum and goes for the Thump Powerslam but Eaton rakes the eyes and drops behind JYD. Eaton brings JYD to the mat with a body slam and then heads for the top turnbuckle. He leaps and catches the Dog with the Alabama Jam! Eaton makes the cover, hooking the leg. He scores the three count in what some may term an upset over Junkyard Dog.

Bobby Eaton p. Junkyard Dog =C

Smarter Than You

The crowd boos as Larry Zbyszko walks out and moves to the interview stage where he stands alone.

Larry Zbyszko: "I will try to keep my words small and short so that all of you peons in Macon, Georgia can understand what I am saying. The man that is in front of all of you right now is the greatest thinking man's wrestler. When it comes to the human game of chess, you may as well call me Bobby Fischer. That is why tomorrow on the Main Event I am going to walk into the ten man battle royal against nine other men who are not my equal and walk out as the new WCW World Television Champion. I am the Living Legend of professional wrestling and if you don't believe me, then watch tomorrow night on the Main Event. Now I need to get out of this dirty, disgusting town before it drags me down to your level."

Larry Zbyszko turns and walks off to boos from this crowd. We head back up to the ring.

Match #5: Non-Title Match; 15 Minute Time Limit

Stan Hansen vs. Lex Luger

This match features the last two NWA United States Champions in what is an excellent brawl. The Total Package showed more of a penchant for actual wrestling than one might have thought. He rolls Hansen up in a cradle here and a small package there. It's all in an attempt to score the three count on the Bad Man From Borger Texas. Hansen gains an advantage throughout the center part of the match, sending Luger outside the ring and choking him on the guardrail to boos from this Macon, Georgia crowd. The match see-saws back and forth inside the ring with neither man holding a very long advantage. The crowd is solidly in the favor of Luger and they cheer him when he is able to break free from a Boston Crab locked on by Hansen. The power of Luger is on display with clotheslines and then a body slam on Hansen. Luger plays to the crowd and then sends Hansen to the ropes and catches him with the scoop powerslam! Luger makes the cover, hooking the leg: One, Two, Three!

Lex Luger p. Stan Hansen =B

Dangerous To You

The match is over and an obviously tired Lex Luger stands up to celebrate this victory. But the celebration is short-lived when Luger gets assaulted from behind by Dan Spivey! Spivey strikes Luger with multiple clotheslines to the back of the head, drawing in boos from this crowd. He picks up Luger and drops him with a power bomb off his shoulder in the center of the ring. Spivey slowly smiles as the commentators call foul on this attack. Dangerous Dan Spivey turns and exits the ring as a swarm of the fun police come inside to protect Luger.

Wildfire Coming At You

A final pre-taped interview begins this week. This time it is focused on one of the participants in tonight's main event: Tommy Rich. Wildfire looks into the camera.

Tommy Rich: "Ric Flair, you're a guy with a lot of catchphrases. You talk about how 'to be the man, you have to beat the man.' You talk about your expensive shoes and your expensive house. Well, Wildfire has never been about expensive clothes. I've just been about wrestling and fighting and that has made me a future here in this company. Tonight is going to be about wrestling when we step in that ring together, Ric. You better be prepared because I'm coming for you with everything I've got. I can promise you that I've got a lot and in just a few minutes you're going to find that out. The Wildfire is coming at you!"

Tommy Rich poses as we cut to the ring for our main event.

Match #6: 30 Minute Time Limit

Ric Flair vs. Tommy Rich

It is time for our main event and what a contest we have for you this evening. The scrappy Tommy Rich scores an early advantage on Flair, causing Flair to exit the ring within the first few minutes. Flair motions toward the back and out from the back come the other three members of the Four Horsemen. This definitely gives Flair an influx of confidence, having three men at his back as he re-enters the ring. Both men continue to give it to each other in this match with Flair lighting up Rich's chest with his chops in the corner. But Rich fires back with punches and he rams Flair's head into the top turnbuckle. The momentum shifts into Flair's corner when Arn Anderson shoves Tommy Rich off the top turnbuckle and Rich lands on his knee. Of course the referee is distracted during this moment. Flair goes right after the knee of Rich, stomping on the knee well and then dropping an elbow right on that knee. Flair bounces off the ropes and catches Rich with a leaping knee drop. Rich gets another burst of momentum when Flair misses with a second knee drop. Rich limps but manages to send Flair into the corner. Flair flips over the corner and lands on the apron. He runs across the apron and climbs to the top turnbuckle where Tommy Rich is there to meet him. Rich goes for the body slam off the top turnbuckle but his knee buckles and Flair falls on top of him. Flair stands up and drags Tommy Rich to the center of the ring. He twists and hooks Rich in the Figure Four Leglock! The crowd boos as the referee checks with Tommy Rich. After about thirty seconds, Rich has no choice but to submit.

Ric Flair d. Tommy Rich =B+

Wild Brawl

The match is over and The Four Horsemen enter the ring where Ric Flair still has the Figure Four on Tommy Rich. The referee warns Flair, telling him to break the hold. Arn Anderson stands between Flair and the referee, keeping the referee from forcing the break. The crowd suddenly cheers as Sting and The Steiner Brothers burst out from the back. Those three men are met by three of the Horsemen in the center of the ring as a wild brawl breaks out here. Sid Vicious and Sting brawl, while The Steiner Brothers do battle with Arn Anderson and Barry Windham. Anderson catches Rick Steiner with a Spinebuster. Ric Flair releases the Figure Four on Tommy Rich and goes to help Sid Vicious with Sting. As Flair strikes with the knife-edge chops, another man comes running toward the ring.

It's Brian Pillman! Pillman has a bandage covering the top of his head due to the assault by The Horsemen earlier tonight. Pillman climbs on the apron and catches Ric Flair with an Air Pillman! The crowd cheers as Pillman strikes at anything that moves on the side of the Four Horsemen. Team Sting starts to get the advantage and they clear the ring of the Four Horsemen, sending all four members outside the ring. Sting releases a howl and beats his chest as he stands tall along with Brian Pillman and The Steiner Brothers. What a way to end the show here tonight. The Four Horsemen stare up into the ring from ringside as the show comes to a close. We'll see you tomorrow for the Main Event!

Brian Pillman - Rogers will make a neat JTTS, but Brian is on the rise.

Lex Luger - Hansen's AJPW commitments make him not very viable to push.

Rip Rogers is definitely a good JTTS. The Hustler does have a long and storied history in the business.

You are right about Stan Hansen's AJPW commitments. Unfortunately, he cannot wrestle for WCW on Sundays. That makes him less important in the grand scheme of things.

Sorry about the loss for The Lariat. But, as stated earlier, he cannot wrestle on Sundays, which is my pay-per-view days. So that makes him a little bit less worthwhile. Maybe I should sign a few Desperados for him. :)

That is a very interesting idea. Right now, Art Barr is listed as a heel as The Juicer. As you can see with the last show, I plan on giving Pillman a little bit of a push. Could that be in both singles and tag teams?

WCW SATURDAY NIGHT

-World Championship Wrestling presents WCW Saturday Night. Last week, we saw Eric Bischoff come out and announce that he is the face of the WCW Championship Committee. He announced that WCW has pulled out of the NWA. In response, the NWA stripped all of WCW's titleholders. More information on that is to come this evening on WCW Saturday Night, including who might become the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion.

-Two weeks ago, Norman The Lunatic came out as Santa Claus to treat the kids with presents. During this moment, he was attacked by Sid Vicious. Norman has promised to get his revenge tonight on WCW Saturday Night when he goes one on one with the Horsemen member. Can Norman come out on top? Will the other Horsemen be around?

-In other action, we will see the other Four Horsemen in action. In our main event, we will see Ric Flair take on Brian Pillman. Pillman was assaulted by the Horsemen last week during an interview. He looks to get some revenge on this evening as he faces the leader of the Horsemen. We will also see Arn Anderson and Barry Windham take on The Steiner Brothers. Both of these teams are accomplished and can win against any competition. Will this match have any bearing on the WCW World Tag Team titles?

Ranger Ross - USA! USA! USA!

Larry Zbyszko - Having just won the title, I doubt he'll be dropping it; no matter how worthy Bourne would be.

Sid - He may not powerbomb him, but he'll definitely pick up the win here.

Sting & Luger - Kev can try this again with a different partner in about 6 years.

Steiner Brothers - Like Jaysin said, it is tough to go against a Horsemen team. But given Sid and Flair are set for wins, Arn and Barry dropping this one seems to even a playing field a little.

Ric Flair - This won't be Brian's day, but it should put him over to a point where his day can come soon.

It was a good show, and I like how you aren't shying away from using guys like Norman and Ranger Ross as a lot tend to do because they aren't the big names we know that came out of this era. The Lightning Express even got to pick up a win on Main Event! One thing I wonder is did you get rid of Worldwide, or just not write it up?

As the format goes, I echo Jaysin again in saying that this is very solid; the only thing that could make it better are some pictures, but those aren't make or break.

These four men enter the ring and Flair struts across from one side to the other, releasing a 'Whoo!' and raising up four fingers into the air. Flair is given a microphone.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Ric Flair:</strong> <span style="color:#FF0000;"><span style="font-family:'CENTURY GOTHIC';">"I heard that there's a party going on in Richmond, Virginia tonight. Whoo! That party is a celebration of a great night for the Four Horsemen. First, this big man in the ring, Sid Vicious is going to destroy Norman The Lunatic. Norman would have to be a lunatic to step in the ring with Sid Vicious. Then we move forward in the night and we get a tag team match where Arn Anderson and Barry Windham prove that they are a better tag team than The Steiner Brothers. Rick and Scott Steiner will be booking hospital rooms right beside Norman. Then we move on to the main event where The Nature Boy is going to style and profile inside the ring against that little snot-nosed punk Flyin' Brian Pillman. Tonight, Barry and I step into the ring with The Steiner Brothers. Rick, Scott, we know you're good but tonight you're going to step in the ring with the best. Tonight, you're going to know that you've been beaten by the best. These four fingers we hold up are not just some simple catchphrase. These four fingers represent the symbol of excellence. A loud USA chant echoes through the audience as the two men stare at each other from separate corners. Before the bell sounds, though, someone appears from the back, entering the ring. It's <strong>Nikita Koloff</strong>! What is the Russian Nightmare doing here? Koloff takes out Ranger Ross with a Russian Sickle. He turns on El Cubano and takes him down with the Russian Sickle! Koloff beats his chest before he grabs Ross and catches him with a short-arm Russian Sickle! El Cubano rolls out of the ring and staggers toward the back. Koloff grabs the USA flag from the corner and places it over the fallen body of Ranger Ross. Koloff asks for and receives a microphone.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Nikita Koloff:</strong> <span style="color:#FF0000;"><span style="font-family:'CENTURY GOTHIC';">"These two men were in the wrong place at the wrong time. He goes for an early Northern Exposure but Zbyszko wisely moves out of the way and Josh crashes onto the mat. The smart Living Legend moves in with the change of momentum and locks Big Josh in with an abdominal stretch. Zbyszko breaks the hold before Josh can break it, pointing to his head and yelling about being smarter than everyone here. He turns and catches Josh with a spin kick and then hooks on the LarryLand Dreamer. You can ask Arn Anderson, the man I beat for that title, I am the best man."</span></span></p><p> </p><p> Z-Man poses for a moment and we head to the ring.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Match #4: </strong><strong><span style="color:#0000FF;">15 Minute Time Limit</span></strong></p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="41024" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Arn Anderson and Barry Windham vs. The Steiner Brothers</span></strong><p> Match number four tonight features the Horsemen duo of Arn Anderson and Barry Windham against The Steiner Brothers. The match breaks down in the opening few minutes with all four wrestlers in the ring. Rick and Scott strike Arn and Barry with Steinerlines that send them both scurrying out of the ring for a break. Rick begins barking, running around the ring before dropping on all fours. Scott stands over him in a typical Steiner Brothers pose as they stare at Arn Anderson and Barry Windham. When the action returns to the ring, Anderson drags Rick Steiner into his corner and the Horsemen duo take control of the action. In typical Horsemen fashion, both Anderson and Windham are not above breaking the rules to keep the advantage. Anderson taunts Scott and Scott takes the bait, coming into the ring. The referee begins pushing Scott back into the corner and Anderson tosses Rick over the top rope to the floor, an action that normally would be cause for a disqualification. Barry Windham runs Rick into the guardrail before tossing him back in the ring. After a couple more minutes, Anderson goes for a DDT but Rick reverses it into a Northern Lights Suplex with no bridge. Both men crawl toward their corners as the ring announcer lets everyone know that there are only five minutes left in the time limit. Rick tags in Scott and in comes Barry Windham! Scott catches Windham with a couple of Steinerlines and then an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Arn Anderson comes in and he gets thrown overhead by Scott Steiner! The fight continues with all four men in the ring. Scott has Windham in a corner and he climbs up, raining down punches on Windham! Rick does the same to Anderson in the opposite corner. The last ten seconds begin to tick away as Scott calls for the Frankensteiner. He sends Windham to the ropes and drops him with the Frankensteiner! Scott makes the cover but the bell sounds, signaling the time limit elapsing.</p><p> <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Arn Anderson and Barry Windham Draw The Steiner Brothers =B</span></strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <strong><span style="color:#0000FF;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">One More In A Rivalry</span></span></strong></p><p> The crowd begins a 'Five More Minutes' chant as we focus on the interview stage where <strong>Jim Ross</strong> is standing by.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Jim Ross:</strong> <span style="color:#FF0000;"><span style="font-family:'CENTURY GOTHIC';">"What an absolute slobberknocker we just saw in the ring tonight. This allows Flair to rake his eyes and get the advantage. The next few minutes plays out in your typical heel/face affair with Flair keeping the advantage by breaking the rules. Pillman gets in some bursts of momentum during that time but he lands awkwardly when leaping off the top turnbuckle, clutching his knee. This begins the Flair focus on the knee of Pillman. Flair raises Pillman's right leg and yanks on it, placing it on the bottom rope before leaping and sitting down right on the leg. Flair slides Pillman in the corner and begins lighting up his chest with knife-edge chops. Flair releases a 'Whoo!' that gets echoed by some of the fans in the audience. WCW SATURDAY NIGHT

-World Championship Wrestling presents WCW Saturday Night taped from the DC Armory in Washington, D.C.. The Clash of the Champions card has been built within the last few weeks, including several major title matches. We learned last week that Sting will take on Ric Flair for the WCW World Heavyweight title. But Sting cannot look past his opponent this week when he takes on Stan Hansen! The Bad Man From Borger Texas looks to prove that he is the one that deserves the World title match at the Clash. Which man will pick up the victory?

-Last week, Dan Spivey's new manager Paul E. Dangerously issued a challenge for Lex Luger to meet Dan Spivey in the ring this week ahead of their match at the Clash. On the Main Event, Luger accepted this challenge and these two top athletes will go one on one on WCW Saturday Night. Which man will pick up momentum headed toward the Clash?

-We have also learned that we will hear a major announcement from former seven time NWA World Champion Harley Race. What kind of announcement could Race have as we move toward the Clash of the Champions?

Larry Zbyszko - There's only room for one Z in WCW, and that's Z-byszko!

Steiner Brothers - Oh my, Kevin and OMG; just go feud with El Gigante already.

Freebirds - As great as the LX have potential to be, the 'birds are far more established as the stars, so they get the win here.

Owen Hart

Vader

Lex Luger - It seems like a slight burial of the Spivey/Dangerously partnership to have him drop his first big match, but Lex is definitely the star, so Luger wins it. Perhaps by DQ?

Sting

Last week was a great night for the Horsemen, but the redebut of Nikita is a great thing. He can go after pretty much anybody, even if you seem to have positioned him against Lex right away. That A for Brian vs Flair had to be huge.

Saturday, week 3, January 1991

Taped from the D.C. Armory, Washington, D.C..

Broadcast via TBS at Late Evening...

WCW presents...

WCW SATURDAY NIGHT

Dangerous Beginning

WCW Saturday Night begins with the arrival of Paul E. Dangerously and Dan Spivey. Dangerous Dan yells at a few fans in the front row as they walk to the ring. Spivey steps in over the top rope and stands beside Paul E. Dangerously. Dangerously has a microphone and a smile.

Paul E. Dangerously: "Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Paul E. Dangerously and this man standing beside me is THEE most dangerous man in professional wrestling: Dan Spivey. He is the most dangerous man in the entire city of Washington, D.C., including the President of these United States. In one week and one day, eight days, he is going to step into the ring with one of your favorites, Lex Luger. Lex Luger, you're going to learn the hard way that Dan Spivey is a man of violent retribution. He is an absolute beast and we, of course, have learned that tonight you are going to get a taste of that retribution, of that destruction. Tonight, we will make sure to leave a small taste of you left for the Clash of the Champions. Tonight, you step into the ring at the altar of your destruction."

The crowd boos loudly and then cheers as the music for Lex Luger begins to play. The Total Package rushes toward the ring and slides inside, coming face-to-face with Dan Spivey. Luger flexes, showing his muscles to the Dangerous one. While Luger is focused on Spivey, Dangerously moves around behind him. Dangerously raises the portable phone and cracks it over the back of Luger's head. Luger stumbles forward and takes a clothesline from Spivey. Spivey begins putting the boots to Luger before dropping an elbow to the back of his head. Spivey picks up Luger and sends him to the ropes, catching him with a sidewalk slam. Spivey stands over top of Luger right now. Will he be able to do the same later on tonight?

Match #1: 10 Minute Time Limit; WCW World Television Title Defense

Larry Zbyszko defends vs. Z-Man

Our first match of the evening is a WCW World Television title defense as the Living Legend Larry Zbyszko takes on Z-Man. The first few minutes are spent with Zbyszko playing cat and mouse with the Z-Man, going outside the ring to break up any momentum the Z-Man begins. When the action moves back inside the ring, we are treated to a display of back and forth action between these two latest Television Champions. Late in the match, the match takes a turn toward Z-Man's favor. Z-Man catches Zbyszko with a diving cross body off the top turnbuckle but only scores a two count. He gets to his feet and backs off before striking Zbyszko with a Superkick. Zbyszko is laid out and Z-Man makes the cover: One, Two, Three??? Z-Man gets up, celebrating the victory but the referee shoves his hand down. He points to Zbyszko's leg being on the bottom rope. Z-Man argues briefly with the referee. When he moves back toward Zbyszko, the bell sounds, signaling the match has reached the time limit.

Larry Zbyszko draws Z-Man =C+

Crash And Burn

In another rare look backstage, we move to the backstage area where we see Brian Pillman already in a battle with Arn Anderson and Barry Windham! Anderson grabs a nearby chair and strikes Pillman in the back with the chair. The crowd boos in the background as Anderson begins striking Pillman in the ribs with the chair again and again. Ric Flair and Sid Vicious arrive on the scene, joining in the beatdown of Pillman. Anderson yanks up Pillman and drops him with a Spinebuster on the concrete floor. Pillman grabs his back and cries out in pain. The Four Horsemen walk away and EMTs arrive on the scene, telling Pillman not to move. A stretcher is brought on the scene, as well as a back brace. As Pillman is being loaded on the stretcher, we move back to the ring.

Match #2: 10 Minute Time Limit

Kevin Sullivan and One Man Gang vs. The Steiner Brothers

The second match of the night is tag team action featuring The Steiner Brothers against Kevin Sullivan and One Man Gang. This match is focused on the tag team unit known as The Steiners as they used various double teams on both Sullivan and OMG. During the match, Jim Ross talks about The Steiner Brothers' upcoming World tag team title match against Doom at Clash of the Champions. Sullivan gets taken over with the Steiner-Line/German Suplex combination for a two count. He gets in the One Man Gang but The Steiner Brothers continue their momentum. Scott shows some power when he lifts OMG on his shoulders. Rick climbs to the top turnbuckle and brings down OMG with a top rope bulldog, the double team known as the Steinerizer. Scott makes a cover: One, Two, Three!

The Steiner Brothers p. Kevin Sullivan and One Man Gang =C+

Another Horsemen Assault

The Steiner Brothers don't have time to celebrate this victory as The Four Horsemen immediately hit the ring and make an assault on the tired brothers. The Steiner Brothers fight back at first but the numbers game of the Four Horsemen bring both Rick and Scott Steiner to the mat. Arn Anderson tosses Scott Steiner over the top rope to the floor. In the ring, Anderson picks up Rick Steiner and sets him up for a Piledriver as Barry Windham climbs to the second turnbuckle. They plant Rick with a Spiked Piledriver. Sid Vicious walks over and places his foot on the throat of Rick Steiner, choking the Dog-Faced Gremlin. Ric Flair struts in the background before calling off the Horsemen. Scott Steiner finally rolls in the ring and checks on his brother, calling for some EMTs and a stretcher to come down to the ring. As the EMTs come down to the ring, we turn our focus to the interview area. Three men are down at the hands of the Four Horsemen so far tonight.

The Lariat Is Ready

The interview area is lit up with a spotlight where Lance Russell is standing by with Stan Hansen.

Lance Russell: "I am sure that I speak for everyone when I say that I hope that Rick Steiner is feeling better before Clash of the Champions. But my guest at this time is the ever-dangerous Stan 'The Lariat' Hansen. Stan, you have a match tonight against one of the top contenders in WCW, Sting. Your thoughts as we move toward that match?"

Stan Hansen: "That face-painted freak? I tell you, Lance, he's some type of wimpy pretty boy that's stepping in the ring with a real man. You know me, Lance, I'm not one that's much for talking. I'm more for fighting. Tonight, I am going to show the WCW Championship Committee why they should take Sting out of the match at the Clash and put me in there."

Hansen turns and spits some chewing tobacco from his mouth and Lance Russell wrinkles his nose for a moment. In the background, the EMTs are carting Rick Steiner on a stretcher with his brother walking right beside him. They disappear to the back. Then we head back to the ring for our next match.

Match #3: 10 Minute Time Limit

The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Lightning Express

The Fabulous Freebirds come out to boos from the crowd here in Washington, D.C. The crowd is solely in the corner of The Lightning Express as Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone discuss The Freebirds taking on The Rock 'N' Roll Express at the Clash for the WCW United States Tag Team titles. Inside the ring, the match is solely Freebirds. The 'Birds hit both members of The Express with clotheslines in the corner and after around six minutes of action determine that it's time to finish the match. Jimmy Garvin strikes Tim Horner with a DDT. Garvin makes the cover: One, Two, Three!

The Fabulous Freebirds p. The Lightning Express =C+

Debuting End

Magnum T.A. is shown standing at the interview stage alongside Harley Race. Magnum offers to shake hands with Race but Race ignores him and Magnum slowly lowers his hand.

Magnum T.A.: "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. What a great show we have seen so far. I am standing by with a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion Harley Race. Harley, we have learned that you have a major announcement tonight. Could you elaborate on that?"

Harley Race: "I would like to start this interview by saying that this is the correct place to make this announcement. Here in the capital city of America, I am making the announcement that I have one more year left of in-ring action. When 1992 begins, I will be retiring from in-ring competition. So this is my very own retirement tour. During this time, I intend to win every single one of WCW's titles, including the tag team titles. Whoever gets the opportunity to face me should consider this to be an honor."

Magnum T.A. looks around as there is a disturbance within the audience. The focus shifts to the audience where we see the surprise WCW debut of Bob Backlund! Backlund leaps over the guardrail and walks to Harley Race, coming face-to-face with Race.

Bob Backlund: "Harley Race. Harley Race. Harley Race. Harley Race. For those plebeians in the crowd here who do not know who I am, my name is Bob Backlund. I am a former three time NWA Western States Heavyweight Champion. I am a former two time Pro Wrestling Illustrated Wrestler of the Year. I congratulate you, Harley, for understanding when the time has come to put up the boots. However, I would like to be the first person to issue the challenge to you at the Clash of the Champions."

Harley Race: "Everyone knows who you are, Bob Backlund. If you want a match with me then shake my hand and we will meet at the Clash."

Race offers his hand and Backlund immediately shakes hands with Handsome Harley Race. The two men go eye-to-eye for a long moment before we cut back to the ring for our next contest.

Match #4: 10 Minute Time Limit

Dr. X vs. Owen Hart

Our next contest features a veteran against a younger wrestler as Dr. X takes on 'The Legacy' Owen Hart. As with several of the previous matches, this one is a one-sided affair firmly in the corner of Owen Hart. This definitely seems like a bathroom break/concession stand match for a lot of the fans here in the audience. Hart catches Dr. X with a Dragon Sleeper but Dr. X manages to get his foot on the ropes to break that hold. X rakes the eyes of Hart and then rams Hart's head on the top turnbuckle. Hart staggers out and X moves forward -- Superkick from Hart! Hart heads quickly to the top turnbuckle and waits for Dr. X to rise to his feet. Hart leaps with a Missile Dropkick that connects! Hart makes the quick cover, hooking the leg: One, Two, Three!

Owen Hart p. Dr. X =C-

Wildfire Will Return

From the ring, we move to a pre-taped video taking place inside a hospital room. Seated in the hospital bed is Tommy Rich. The man nicknamed Wildfire is sitting up slightly. We hear the beeping of the heart monitor in the background. One side of Rich's face is covered with a bandage from the burns he suffered last week.

Tommy Rich: "Big Van Vader, you made one mistake last week when you burned my face. That mistake is that you didn't end my career. You can ask Buzz Sawyer what happens when you simply leave me for dead but don't make sure you've finished the job. I will be back at the Clash of the Champions. I will be back to extract my revenge in your blood, Vader. At Clash of the Champions, it's going to be the wrong night to be you, Vader. It's going to be the end of the night when you are broken and lying on the ground. You are going to be my vengeance."

Rich coughs and his heart monitor seems to be beeping faster. Orderlies come into the room and close the curtain as we cut back to the ring.

Match #5: 10 Minute Time Limit

Big Van Vader vs. Keith Hart

Speaking of Big Van Vader, he comes out from the back for his match tonight with Keith Hart. Vader pauses on the ramp, setting his large mask on the ground. He does a symbol above it and steam rises from the mask. Then, Vader continues his way down to the ring where Keith Hart goes right after him. Vader shrugs off the shots by Hart and shoves him to the mat. Vader rushes in and catches Hart with an avalanche in the corner. Vader sets up Hart in that corner and begins demolishing him with forearm smashes. Hart tries to cover up and then just falls to the mat. Vader yanks him up and catches him with a belly-to-belly suplex to the mat. Vader yells at the crowd, asking 'Who's the man?' and 'What time is it?' He responds to the last one by saying that it's 'Vader Time!' Vader picks up Keith Hart and plants him near the corner with a Power Bomb. Vader climbs to the second turnbuckle and comes crashing down with a Vader Bomb! Vader places two hands on the chest of Keith Hart and the referee counts the three count for a annihilative victory.

Big Van Vader p. Keith Hart =C+

Your Russian Nightmare

Another rare look in the backstage area features the cameras focusing on Lex Luger. Luger is posing for pictures, presumably for either WCW The Magazine or promos for Clash of the Champions. Luger is distracted by these pictures such that he doesn't see Nikita Koloff sneaking up on him. Koloff attacks Luger with that large Russian chain that he brings to the ring with him. Koloff wraps the chain around his fist and begins punching Luger but Luger begins fighting back! Luger blocks a punch and begins throwing punches to Koloff! He grabs Koloff by the head and throws him down a hallway. The brawl continues, moving out from the backstage area to the ramp. Koloff takes control, ramming Luger into the guardrail and then dragging him toward the ring. Koloff grabs Luger and rams him back-first into the ring apron before sliding him inside the ring. Koloff takes the chain and wraps it around his arm. Luger has some blood dripping down his forehead at this point. The Total Package slowly picks himself up and then turns and catches a chained Russian Sickle! The crowd begins a solid 'USA' chant, getting underneath the nerves of The Russian Nightmare. Koloff yells at the crowd as Paul E. Dangerously and Dan Spivey walk toward the ring. Both of them enter the ring and look at Nikita Koloff for a moment. Koloff sneers and then exits the ring. Dangerously calls for a referee. Is that serious? Could we be seeing the first Dan Spivey/Lex Luger match right now? Nick Patrick comes from the back, jogging down the ramp and into the ring. He calls for the bell.
