Thread Rating: Thumbs up/down instead of stars

Recommended Posts

Remember when youtube had star ratings out of 5?

No?

It was forever ago, and was done away with. Why? Because people only ever rated things 5 if they like them, or 1 if it they didn't. People always voted in a binary. So the logical thing to do was to simply make the system an up or a down, and then show you a percentage breakdow, ie this video has roughly 78% likes to dislikes.

The same thing more or less happens here on GDS; people vote 5 stars if they like a thread, 1 if don't.

If it can be done where we see a percentage rating next to a thread rather than a star rating, I think that'd be helpful. More or less almost all threads end up with either 5 or 4 stars. 3 and 2 stars threads are almost never seen and a 1 star thread might crop up, but only if it's an awful thread.

TL;DR: Can we get percentage ratings instead of stars for threads?

We should just get rid of the system altogether.

After googling and ending up on the vbulletin site, I found this.

Admin CP -> Forums & Moderators -> Forum Manager -> Edit Forum -> Allow Thread Ratings in this Forum

It would need to be done in each section by the site admin.

Could you do the dynasty section?

This is and the suggestions area are probably the top two. People have gone in and 1 starred in both areas on threads I know were not bad. In the dynasty, I imagine it happens when someones favorite dynasty is rated lower than another one that may or may not be as good, and gets 1 starred to try and even it out. In the suggestions area, I believe people have 1 starred suggestions just because people still believe that one suggestion getting in might make another, perhaps better suggestion, get left out.

I don't think either one of them actually effects people viewing them, and I believe a developer is probably going to look at views and replies more than the star rating, so I doubt the star ratings actually help anyone anyways.

I for the most part totally ignore them, didn't even notice some of them are already gone til' after reading this thread. I go for the views and replies more than anything, and I totally ignore it all with the dynasty area's, because it's never accurate unless it's been ongoing for a year or more.

I really wish this forum had a "Like" button over any other suggestions, I like that the most. Just something I can say, hey I like your post... and if I don't I don't hit anything. Keeps everyone positive.

Could you do the dynasty section?

Eh, I'd argue against this. It's a decent way of getting feedback on if what you are doing is working or not, especially since getting actual written feedback can be like drawing teeth at times. Sure it's an easily abused system by some people but I like to think at the end of the day, a large majority of people just ignore the thread rating and truck on anyways.

I'm a big fan of getting rid of the star ratings everywhere, for exactly the reasons mentioned before. It's used as a binary system, very few people even notice the stars are there, people never (and can't?) change their ratings if the thread changes and there are minimal upsides.

Likes are generally the best way to go if possible, whether that be for individual posts or entire threads. No idea if it's possible but at least with likes you can see what people actually like... something with 100 likes is way more obviously useful than a thread with 3 stars, which could be one 5 star and one 1 star rating combined. Ultimately, if people don't like something it will be ignored... but finding something that lots of people like is instantly helpful feedback for anyone looking for starting points for anything... advice, graphics, dynasties etc :) Not to mention it's great feedback for anyone writing on the forums, which is massively helpful for writers who often don't know how many people are reading along and likes are just as good as a "that was a good show" type comment.

TLDR: Basically, star ratings suck, like system rules. :)

I think the ratings actually even out after a period of time, and are more correct at that point. It's when the diary's first start that it's the most wrong... Sometimes I think it's a popularity thing, especially with avid diary writers. I've seen highly rated threads before they post their first show, and seen newbie threads rated low before their's.

After a period of time the better one's start standing out, and all is well. At the beginning of diary's I've noticed it's rarely if ever accurate. It helps the established and hurts the unknowns.

It's abused by a lot of people. If someone wants to show their support they can comment. There's no need for star ratings though, because like said in the first post, it's always only 1 star or 5 star, and I'm sure a lot of people agree that getting one stars on every single dynasty you do kills a ton of motivation.

I give this post 5 stars!:p

I agree with you. As someone who always gets a one star for every thread I have ever created, it does not bother me in the least bit. In fact it does the opposite, I laugh each time one of my threads gets a one star (I now one star my own threads). The way I look at it is this, if someone dislikes me that much or if they think they can troll me by giving me a one star, well the joke is on them because it does not matter to me in the least bit.

Even it if the one star is genuine criticism and is not coming from someone who dislikes of me or trying to troll me, I am cool with it. Everyone has the right to their opinion and if that is the way they want to voice it so be it. There is no way that I would take any offense to it.

I understand that some may not care, and do like some sort of rating.

Myself, I just feel the "like" button would be a lot more informative. It shows you who liked it, how many liked it, all right there for you to see.. and more importantly, for me to see when I'm pressed for time and can't read them all.

I honestly don't care if we have stars or not to be honest. Stars don't influence me in the least, as far as reading other threads or my own threads. I just don't look at them anymore since as I said they are not accurate of the content inside. Example: I know I'm not the only one to have read a couple highly rated diary's or suggestions and then read a couple of low rated diary's and suggestions and find them backwards after viewing them. Especially if they are only a couple of weeks old or less. As I said earlier, I've seen some good suggestions, stuff that was put into the games although their ratings were low.

I do look at views quite a bit, as that tells me how much interest in that thread there is (most of the time).
