<p>I wouldn't say I'm the best/most experienced alter out there, but I do do my own edits now and then. I've had a little bit of luck doing that with GIMP and the 'select contiguous region' tool/manually selecting chunks of the picture and adding them to existing selections.</p><p> </p><p>

Then using the 'colorise' tool (sometimes 'hue', off the top of my head).</p><p> </p><p>

The one I did most recently was darkening a Mark Adonis render to make him look pacific, which worked fairly well but also wasn't that big a change.</p>
