WWF 1991: "They'll be jammed packed to the rafters for this one!"

Recommended Posts

No real obligatory backstory or prelude here.

The Data: I'm using Rising Storms as a base and will be playing as the WWF. Vince McMahon will be my user character--but I don't expect that to impact the diary in any significant way.

I have made some very minor adjustments to the data before launching...mostly they are related to the starting broadcasting deals. I have cancelled All American Wrestling, as I didn't want 2 "B" shows. Superstars will be my "A" show to start with Wrestling Challenge as my lone "B". I have both shows on the USA Network, as well as TSN. I have left the UK deals in tact. I have added a few chemistry notes in as well.

Big thanks to justtxyank and the wonderful Mod Squad fellows for all their work in creating the data.

What to Expect: I do plan to keep this diary as authentic to the time period as possible while simultaneously departing from history. Basically don't expect to see a lot of non-traditional gimmick matches or an over-signing a lot of future superstar guys early on (ex: Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, etc.) as, to me, they don't fit the time period. Some of those guys may trickle in if the diary lives long enough...we shall see.

Prediction Contests: At some point I will probably begin a prediction contest (probably for the Royal Rumble). At the moment my thinking is that, with the use of jobbers (especially the new "hire local" function), predictions for Superstars and Wrestling Challenge will be too predictable.

My Experience: I have only written one diary before (NWA 1987: This is Where We Wrestle). While it didn't have an extraordinary long shelf life, I was rather proud of it. Hopefully I can improve on this project.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to check this out and hopefully it's an enjoyable ride! Please feel free to comment and share your thoughts on the happenings in the diary as well as layout. Constructive criticism is appreciated as much as (if not more than) compliments!

I don't know about anyone else, but I'll hang from the rafters for this! I had really liked your short NWA diary, so I'm glad to see you back at something.

Thanks Beejus--I appreciate the support. It's good to know that my short lived NWA project made a positive impression! Hopefully this can get more steam behind it and last a bit longer.

I am in the process of booking the next round of Superstars and Wrestling Challenge tapings now and will hopefully have them posted in the next 24-48 hours. I have extended Superstars to 90 minutes and Challenge to a full hour for the next tapings as I felt that I couldn't fit very much in first round. Hopefully the additional content doesn't bog down the reading or writing very much. That said, I plan on keeping TV shows short and relatively to the point with more elaboration for events.

From Madison Square Garden (Tri State Region)

18,200 fans in attendance

Announcers: Vince McMahon & “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

Commentators Welcome

McMahon and Piper welcome the audience from the world’s most famous arena and hype a rare Superstars in-ring appearance by Hulk Hogan! Plus we’ll hear comments from the The Ultimate Warrior! Tito Santana will be in action later on as well, but first we head ringside for the Rockers!

Segment Rating: 85

The Rockers vs Barry O & Bob Bradley

Michaels and Jannetty, the Federation’s resident tag-team specialists, put their tag team chemistry on display in the evening’s opening contest. McMahon and Piper noted that the pair looked in tip top shape for the Royal Rumble--a match where every man is for himself (even tag team partners). After a double-fist drop from the top, Jannetty pins Barry O short of 8 minutes.

Victors: The Rockers

Match Rating: 61

The Brother Love Show:

Brother Love opens his this edition by discussing the upcoming Royal Rumble match. He notes some of the big names who are scheduled to compete in the 30-Man extravaganza (including Hulk Hogan, the Macho King and Hawk and Animal). Brother Love goes on to say that his money, however, is on his guest, his former client: the Undertaker!

The normal gospel music that plays throughout each edition of the Brother Love show is cut off by a chilly funeral dirge and The Undertake is led out by his sinister looking new manager, Paul Bearer. The Undertaker keeps his head bowed, his lifeless gaze expressionless as Bearer’s shrill voice explained that his Undertaker is destined to win the Rumble match...in fact the other 29 competitors will be “dying” get out of the ring when the Undertaker’s number is called...“Ohh Yes!”

Segment Rating: 83

The Event Center with Sean Mooney

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center with a special Royal Rumble Report! Mooney highlights some of the particular rules of the match before we hear comments from some of the scheduled participants.

“Hacksaw”Jim Duggan dedicates his performance in this year’s Rumble match “to the brave men and women overseas fighting to keep America safe! Thanks for your service...tough guys! Hooooo!”

Jimmy Hart, flanked by the massive Earthquake and “Canadian Strongman” Dino Bravo giggles maniacally before expressing his doubt that anyone in the WWF is even strong enough to throw Earthquake over the top rope! Earthquake says that the shockwaves of his victory celebration will set off richter scales all around the country!

Lastly,The Rockers realize that they aren’t the biggest guys in the WWF, but they still promise to “strut and stroll and rock and roll, and show what teamwork is all about.”

Happy New Year, now listen here! The Genius will tell you all!

It’s 1991, The Genuis’ year and my opponents will all fall!

You see, the Royal Rumble is close at hand--a place where I’ll stand tall!

29 other men who think that they can win, just like my opponent who shortly I will pin,

Should listen one and all!

They should listen close to what I say and repeat in my refrain,

At the end of the Rumble match, only The Genius shall remain!

Segment Rating: 77

Shane Douglas vs. The Genius

McMahon notes that The Genius is certainly not lacking in confidence about his chances in the big Rumble match and Piper notes that he prefers Dr. Suess. If the young Shane Douglas was at all intimidated by The Genius’ claims, it didn’t show as he immediately took it to the academic scholar. The Genius took the upperhand however when Douglas missed a splash from the top and The Genius pointed to his head indicating his superior intellect.

He should have spent less time celebrating himself and gone for a pin however, because he was totally caught off-guard by the quick inside cradle by Douglas! A quick 3 count later and we had a big upset on Superstars and the Genius was livid!

Victor: Shane Douglas

Match Rating: 56

Video Replay

A replay of an angle on Superstars from 2 weeks ago is shown.“Mean” Gene hosted Randy “Macho King” Savage and Sensational Queen Sherri. Savage claimed to be the “true number one contender to WWF Championship, yeah..” Savage and Sherri also reveal that they have a handshake agreement with Sgt. Slaugher, “a true man of integrity” for a shot at the title should Slaughter defeat The Ultimate Warrior at the Royal Rumble.

Segment Rating: 91

“Mean” Gene hosts the Ultimate Warrior

Following on the heels of that replay, Gene welcomes the WWF Champion The Ultimate Warrior to a huge ovation! Gene welcomes the champion before asking about the supposed deal struck between Randy Savage and Sgt. Slaughter. Warrior replied that he was not concerned with the “lost madness of the Macho King” and that he was focused on the upcoming war to bought fought at The Royal Rumble. He says that Sgt. Slaughter is only a sergeant...but he “is the general of my army of Warriors! You Sgt. Slaughter have lost your way! You have abandoned the principles that guide all souls through the inter-dimensional enlightenment...you Sgt. Slaughter will pay the ultimate price for betrayal!” Warrior let loose a deep snort as “Mean” Gene looked slightly nervous to end the segment.

Segment Rating: 94

Tito Santana vs. Boris Zhukov

Ring veteran and much adored Tito Santana took on the former Bolshevik and perennial bad guy Boris Zhukov in the next match up. Again, Piper and McMahon talked through the open match discussing the big Royal Rumble event coming up in a few short weeks. Nothing special here as Santana was good for a win following a flying forearm smash.

Victor: Tito Santana

Match Rating: 65

Pre-match Comments

The menacing Warlord and his fast-talking manager Slick promise that Hulk Hogan will succumb to the overwhelming power of the Warlords’ patented Full Nelson! All of which is just a warmup for the Royal Rumble!

“Just like all the servicemen and servicewomen fighting over in the Persian Gulf,” The Hulkster says “the largest biceps in the world are going to drop some bombs are the Warlord, brother! “

Segment Rating: 87

Hulk Hogan vs The Warlord w/ Slick

These two wasted little time getting started as the Warlord came at Hulk out of the gate on for the Hulk to duck a clothesline and knock the big man back with a shoulder tackle. While he didn’t the mat, the temporary stunning effect allowed Hogan to take control as he backed the Warlord into the corner with a series of big fists that brought MSG to it’s feet right early on. As the Slickster jumped on the apron drawing Hogan’s attention, the Warlord was able to seize control however and controlled the former champion with a giant headlock. The match really slowed down here as the Warlord kept Hogan in control alternating power moves and a vice-like headlock. With the support of his hulkamaniacs, however, Hogan was able to battle back, shaking off the Warlords powerful blows. Ultimately Hogan bodyslammed the mighty Warlord before securing the pin following the big leg drop.

Victor: Hulk Hogan

Match Rating: 79

Post match

The program came to close as the Hulkster posed for the crowd and held up a “Hulkamania will live forever” dot-matrix, print-shop banner.

From McCalister Field House (Mid Atlantic Region)

6,000 fans in attendance

Announcers: Vince McMahon & “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

Commentators Welcome

McMahon and Piper welcome the audience from the McCalister Field House from scenic South Carolina! They hype the big 6-man tag team main event featuring The Ultimate Warrior and The Hart Foundation taking on the Dr. of Style’s dangerous trio of The Warlord & Power & Glory! Plus, Jake Roberts is in the building and an appearance by the Big Bossman on the Brother Love show!

Segment Rating: 75

Koko B. Ware vs The Barbarian w/ Bobby Heenan

The Birdman kicked off the show taking on the Bobby Heenan’s most massive charge, The Barbarian. Despite Koko’s best efforts to take the big man down, it was not to be his night. Barbarian was able to catch Koko mid flight and drove him into the mat with a giant powerslam as Heenan looked on smugly.

Victor: The Barbarian

Pre-match

As a warm-up for their upcoming Tag Team title match, “The Million Dollar Man” and his bodyguard Virgil were set for tag team action tonight against the local team of Al Burke and Sonny Rogers. Before things could get underway, DiBiase got on the microphone and said that everyone knew that what he was capable of and it was up to Virgil to prove he wouldn’t be the weak link at the Rumble. He wanted to present Virgil with an opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong by having Virgil wrestle alone tonight! Virgil seemed taken by surprise that DiBiase would not be wrestling but seemed to accept the circumstances even if he didn’t like them.

Segment Rating: 72

Virgil vs. Al Burke & Sonny Rogers

Virgil started the match off in fine form against Burke displaying a sound hip toss and an athletic looking dropkick. The numbers would eventually get the better of him however and soon Burke and Rogers were able to take control as DiBiase barked at Virgil from ringside. It wasn’t until DiBiase actually interceded in the match by tripping Rogers that Virgil was able secure a win following a piledriver in the middle of the ring.

“Mean” Gene hosts the Jake “the Snake” Roberts

“Mean” Gene Okerlund is once again on the interview platform and welcomes his guest Jake Roberts to a thunderous ovation. Roberts has his signature green canvas sack slung over his shoulder as he slowly makes his way to the platform taking each step with care, letting crowd cheer. Okerlund says that it was all the way back in October that Rick “the Model” Martel blinded him but now he’s only two weeks away to finally his opportunity to take on one-on-one at the Royal Rumble. Jake goes on to say that he’s a patient man and while some men might have lost their cool for not being able to get their revenge for over 2 months, his experience has been that revenge is dish best served cold.

Segment Rating: 86

Jimmy Snuka vs. Bob Bradley

“Superfly” wasted little time to show that he was in peak form heading into the Rumble match as it took him just over five minutes to put away Bob Bradley following his signature splash.

Vignette

We are shown a non-descript suburban town somewhere in Canada. Two children are getting ready to cross the street to a candy shop. After looking both ways they begin scurrying across and abruptly brought to a stand still when “Halt!” is called. The Mountie, astride a large horse, blocks their path. He demeans the children (who look frightened) for not using the crosswalk. He goes on to say that this is the type of disobedience that he is coming to the WWF to correct...

The Brother Love Show

Brother Love opens his show preaching the charity of love and forgiveness. He says that it breaks his heart when his brothers hurt one another with their words but it is only through forgiveness that these wounds can be healed. To that end, he invites out his guest, The Big Bossman.

Brother Love goes on to remind the Bossman of all the things that brother Heenan has said about his mother, but before allowing the Bossman to respond, goes on to say that it’s Bossman’s duty to forgive! In fact, brother Heenan wants to come out here to apologize to the Bossman and his mother right now…

“The Brain” joins the set of the Brother Love show and is immediately greeted by “weasel!”chants from the crowd. Bossman is visibly seething at the mere sight of Bobby Heenan. Bobby goes on to flash the Bossman a winning smile and says that he wants to make things up to the Bossman before his big Intercontinental title match with Mr. Perfect. In fact, he has a late Christmas present for Bossman to take home to his mother as a token of goodwill…

At this time one of the backstage handlers walks out a pig on a leash and Bobby exclaims “It’ll be a family reunion at the Bossman house! Hahaha!” This sends the Bossman over the edge and he grabs Heenan by the lapels of his jacket with a bad intent! Then...

Mr. Perfect jumps from behind the Brother Love set’s back curtain and smashes the Intercontinental title belt squarely across the back of the Big Bossman’s head! The former correctional officer from Cobb County crashes to the ground as Heenan and Perfect put the boots to him! A sea of officials clear Perfect and Heenan away and tend to the Bossman ending the segment.

Tugboat vs. Barry Horowitz

Most of the action in the ring was ignored by McMahon and Piper, who instead were reacting to the events that had just transpired on the Brother Love Show. When did finally turn their attention to the ring, it was Piper who referred to Tugboat as “a lot of beef” and both Piper and McMahon agreed he would be a formidable force in the coming Rumble matchup. Tugboat ended this one after 6 minutes following a Running Splash.

Victor: Tugboat

The Event Center with Sean Mooney

As we’ve seen in the past few weeks, Sean Mooney was in the Event Center with a special Royal Rumble Report! Mooney reviewed the rules of the match before hearing comments from some of the scheduled participants:

The “Macho King” and the “Sensational Queen” promised to let the “madness run wild” on all the wrestlers in the Royal Rumble...eventually he’d get what’s “rightfully his: the WWF Championship belt! Yeah!”

Hawk and Animal said the Royal Rumble is like a 30 car pile up on the freeway--full of devastation and destruction! Or...for Hawk and Animal...just another Friday night!

The British Bulldog noted “that every dog has his day” and his day would be at the Royal Rumble.

The Texas Tornado said that he thought the “skies were getting darker” and that a tornado was getting ready to touch down in the middle of the Royal Rumble match! It would “be fast, unpredictable and let nothing stand in it’s way!”

The Ultimate Warrior & The Hart Foundation vs The Warlord and Power & Glory w/ Slick

It was now time for the big 6-man main event featuring the team of The Ultimate Warrior and The Hart Foundation taking on Slick’s Warlord and Power & Glory. The contest opened up with a scrum with the babyfaces getting the better of the heels, sending Roma, Hercules and Warlord all yo the floor to regroup. When referee Joey Marella gets thing back under control, Slick’s team is able to gain the advantage by isolating Bret Hart in their corner, building heat with the crowd. Displaying his indomitable heart, eventually “The Hitman” battles back to make a big hot tag to the Warrior who comes in like a house of fire--potatoing everyone in his sight with clothes lines and right hands as the crowd goes crazy! Warrior drops Roma with a big flying shoulder tackle and signals for the Gorilla Press Slam when...

...seemingly out of nowhere Sgt. Slaughter and Gen. Adnan attack the champion with the Iraqi flag! Slicks men quickly lay out the Hart Foundation as Slaughter and Adnan continue to pound the Warrior (officially ending this contest with a disqualification).

Victor: Warrior & Hart Foundation via. DQ

Match Rating: 77

Post match

The beatdown continues for a few moments as the timekeeper rings the bell frantically and Joey Marella pleads with the heels to stop! Then….

...the cavalry arrives! The Hulkster sprints into the ring wielding a steel chair! He swings wildly as the heels scramble to the back. Superstars goes off the air with The Hart Foundation, Warrior and Hogan regrouping themselves.

I also have to say that I enjoyed your Genius promo. :)

Agree with angel--you killed it on the Genius promo!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting guys! I'm glad you liked The Genius promo--it did go through more drafts than I should probably admit and I'm not sure how many times I could do it again! Ha!

This. This damn near made me spit my coffee out laughing! Remember those things? It would be like 9 sheets of paper long with the perforated edges and the tiny holes?

:D

Crossface,

Just got caught up on the diary. Things are looking really good. The Royal Rumble is one of my favorite moments of the year. I am sure you will have a few surprises coming up. That is one thing for which the Royal Rumble is known.

Thanks angel! I'm excited for the RR with only 1 week to go! So many people on these boards have written such masterful Rumbles (TFC, who has clearly left fingerprints all over this diary, comes to mind)...hopefully it'll live up to the expectation!

Regarding the Rumble, and the diary in general, some booking decisions have already been made based off of some "breaking kayfabe" type stuff. With my NWA diary I shied away from posting the goings-on "behind the scenes" Wrestling Observer type stuff and felt it worked pretty well. I was leaning that way again here...but I wasn't sure if people were curious about that kind of thing and I should be making an effort to include those details? You know...behavior incidents, contract negotiations, drug testing results, etc.

I'd love to hear some reader input on whether that's something you guys want to hear about. In fact, any comments and suggestions on layout and match and segment write-ups, characters, etc. are always welcomed and encouraged!

I will be holding a prediction contest for the Royal Rumble with rules and the card to be posted after one more episode of Superstars!

Thanks again for reading!

I like wrestling observer stuff when presented within character so like an observer type newsletter or something. Nothing to spoil your diary though. It gives a good feel for what's going on with the workers and as a mod maker it helps me catch workings

RE: news and stuff...you do what works best for you. If you didn't do it in NWA, and no one seemed to miss it, maybe keep going without it? Or maybe just give us an update at the end of the month or something?

Thanks for the feedback on breaking kayfabe news guys. At the moment I am thinking of posting some tidbits at the end of the month...but the jury is very much still out. If anyone else has feedback on this, I'd love to hear it.

This is beautiful. Very easy to read and realistic. I'll be following.

Additional Comments on the event or diary: This is a really enjoyable dynasty. You've captured the feel of the era well. Good luck with the Rumble!

Thanks for joining up Smasher and Matty! Glad you guys are enjoying it. Hopefully I can keep it going for a while.

The Rumble PPV is more than half-written and I'm pretty pleased with it so far. It should be up before the weekend's over. Predictions are still open for the time being. As always, thanks for taking the time to read. Comments and feedback always appreciated!
