The impressive youngster Shane Douglas tagged with the fun-loving Bushwhackers to take on The Genius and The Orient Express. Kato and Douglas started the match off for their respective teams and exchanged some quick-paced chain wrestling with neither man having a clear advantage. When Fuji tripped Douglas with his cane, the heels were able to take control and used quick tags to keep Douglas in their corner.</p><p> </p><p> From the apron, The Bushwhackers kept the fans involved by leading claps and stomping their feet. With the fans behind him, Douglas battled back--powering out of a chinlock by the Genius. When Fuji went to draw referee Tim White’s attention, The Bushwhackers had enough. Butch dropped to the floor and began chasing “the devious one.” Fuji drew Butch into a trap however, as Tanaka waited around the ringpost and dropped cousin Butch with a wicked looking crescent kick. This drew Luke to the floor as began fending off both Tanaka and Kato.</p><p> </p><p> Back in the ring, Douglas was on fire against the Genius, sending him hard into the corner and catching him on the rebound for an impressive belly-to-belly suplex. Douglas hooked the leg but the referee was engaged into the melee on the floor. Douglas popped up to grab the referee’s attention and Fuji slid his cane into the ring to the Genius. As Douglas turned around, the Genius caught him in-between the eyes with the end of the cane! The illegal object unseen, the Genius secured the pinfall as Piper and Monsoon both decried this a “miscarriage of justice!”</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Victors: The Genius & The Orient Express</strong></p><p><strong> Match Rating: 53</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42352" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Backstage Interview:</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://rs288.pbsrc.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Sean%20Mooney_zpsrywuvzmt.jpg~c100</span><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Bret%20Hart%2090_zps0kylatbt.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Bret%20Hart%2090_zps0kylatbt.jpg</span></a><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Jim%20Neidhart%2090_zpsvmwk8lj6.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Jim%20Neidhart%2090_zpsvmwk8lj6.jpg</span></a></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Sean Mooney was backstage with the WWF Tag Team Champions, The Hart Foundation. The champions made their way out to a thunderous ovation, clearly a crowd favorite this evening. DiBiase ordered Virgil to start the match and things got underway with a tie-up between Virgil and “the Hitman.” Hart quickly out-wrestled Virgil, sending him over with an arm drag. “The Excellence of Execution” continued doling out punishment for a few more minutes before tagging in Neidhart who continued where Hart left off by slamming Virgil for a 2 count. “The Anvil” brought Hart back in and, like a well-oiled machine, the Foundation used the 5 count to squeak in a double-suplex. From the apron, DiBiase is barked for a tag. Happy to oblige, “The Hitman” hiptossed a battered Virgil into DiBiase’s corner. DiBiase slapped Virgil’s back all the while barking “now I have to clean up your mess!” </p><p> </p><p> DiBiase tied up with Hart and two traded holds--both pretty evenly matched until “The Hitman” made the uncharacteristic mistake of dropping his head for a back body drop allowing DiBiase to come down with a big elbow across the back of his neck. This allowed DiBiase to take control as he continued piling on with a series of stomps punctuated by a big gutwrench suplex before tagging Virgil back in. From here, it seemed that Virgil and Ted were operating a lot more effectively--they kept “the Hitman” in their corner and exchanged frequent tags to keep Hart grounded on the mat.</p><p> </p><p> “The Hitman” turned things around on DiBiase when he rolled out of the way of a falling fist drop and was able to tag Neidhart. Neidhart came in like freight train: dishing out bodyslams for both DiBiase and Virgil who decided to run in. Next, “the Anvil” fired DiBiase into the ropes and leveled him with a big flying shoulder tackle. Neidhart covered put Virgil broke it up at 2. This brought Hart back in as Joey Marella temporarily lost control. </p><p> </p><p> Having a significant advantage in experience and chemistry, The Foundation quickly wrestled control from Virgil and DiBiase with a display of some of their signature tag team spots: including Neidhart slamming Hart onto DiBiase, and a double Irish-whip in the corner that ended with Neidhart driving his shoulder and head into Virgil’s midsection. From there, the coup de grat occurred as DiBiase was driven down with the Hart Attack and Neidhart covered “the Million Dollar Man” for a decisive win.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Victors: The Hart Foundation</strong></p><p><strong> Match Rating: 70</strong></p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Post Match:</strong></p><p> <a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Ted%20DiBiase%2090_zpshcffcwly.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Ted%20DiBiase%2090_zpshcffcwly.jpg</span></a><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Virgil%2087_zpsfthzp6da.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Virgil%2087_zpsfthzp6da.jpg</span></a></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> The Hart Foundation grabbed their titles and made a brief show for the fans before heading to the back as Virgil recovered on the floor and DiBiase rolled to the corner on the mat. Virgil gingerly got to his feet and rolled into the ring as DiBiase as made his way into a sitting position the corner.</p><p> </p><p> As Virgil stood over DiBiase there was a strong buzz of anticipation among the crowd. Monsoon and Piper both wondered if Virgil has finally had enough abuse with Piper saying “come on Virgil! Time to be a man!” DiBiase barked for Virgil to help him up and Virgil looked at the crowd who, for the first time in his WWF career, actually began cheering him. DiBiase again barked for Virgil to help him up and, much to the chagrin of Detroit-area fans, Virgil extended the arm and helped his employer back to his feet. </p><p> </p><p> Once Ted has reached his feet, Virgil quickly turned away but DiBiase wouldn’t release his grasp on the bodyguard. Virgil turned and DiBiase stepped in closer before berating Virgil, holding a finger and jabbing into Virgil’s chest. Piper pointed out that he can’t blame this loss on Virgil...it was DiBiase who got pinned! Again, Virgil turned to leave and DiBiase pulled him back in a second time. He once again berated his bodyguard before and slapping Virgil across the cheek! Virgil turned his face away for a moment before returning to shove DiBiase onto the ground! DiBiase looked shocked as the Palace of Auburn Hills exploded. Virgil balled his hands up into fists and invited DiBiase to get up and fight him! DiBiase slinked off backwards on his hands and feet shaking his head “no!.” Virgil stepped in after him, calling for him to stand up and fight him! </p><p> </p><p> DiBiase, not having it, rolled out of the ring and headed to the back holding an admonishing finger up warning Virgil that he’d pay! The broadcast cut away with Virgil standing tall in the ring, the people firmly behind him.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Segment Rating: 79</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42352" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Backstage Interview:</strong></p><p> </p><p> <span>http://rs288.pbsrc.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Gene%20Okerlund%201_zpsmvqqs5r0.jpg~c100</span><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Jake%20Roberts%2092_zpsue46jyw2.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Jake%20Roberts%2092_zpsue46jyw2.jpg</span></a></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Gorilla Monsoon and Roddy Piper reset the program by sending the broadcast to video clips illustrating the history between Jake Roberts and Rick Martel. Jake took a moment, staring straight into the camera before beginning…</p><p> </p><p> “You know Gene, the bible teaches an eye for an eye and that’s exactly what Rick Martel took from me back in October. Roberts made his way out next, with the loudest ovation of the night up to that point. After depositing Damien under the corner turnbuckle, Roberts slid into the ring and immediately came at Martel firing jabs. Martel wobbled back and Roberts knocked him down with the signature set-up for the DDT, the short-arm clothesline. Detroit exploded in response! Roberts grabbed “the Model’s” head and looked to lock in the patented maneuver, but Martel quickly freed himself as he flopped about the canvas. In fact he backed right into the corner that contained Damien and quickly Martel displayed his displeasure and rolled to the floor. </p><p> </p><p> Referee Mike Chioda attempted to restore some order here, seeing that the bell had not even officially rung. Martel would only agree to re-enter the ring once Chioda had backed Roberts firmly into his corner and finally the contest started for real. Things slowed down from this point with Martel taking control early following a thumb to the eye. Martel continued to work Roberts over, softening up his back for the Boston Crab. Martel used a backbreaker and submission hold that saw the knee of Martel firmly entrenched in Robert’s back as Martel wrenched back on the arms. With the crowd firmly on his side, Jake “the Snake” never gave in and Martel let go the hold in frustration. </p><p> </p><p> Things turned when Roberts displayed life by dropping Martel with an inverted atomic drop (that, according to Gorilla, had “the Model” “singing falsetto”).From this point, both men were evenly spent and began trading moves back and forth good for a handful of 2-counts. After Martel was unable to put Roberts away with a sidewalk slam, showing more frustration, he flung Roberts into the ropes and readied himself for a backdrop. Roberts had the move well scouted however and caught the lowered head of Martel with the DDT! The Palace of Auburn Hills became unglued!</p><p> </p><p> Roberts, deciding he wasn’t through with Martel, picked him up and delivered another DDT to the man who had blinded him months prior. Roberts, slid back into his corner for a minute, sitting and admiring his handiwork. Slowly Roberts rose to his feet and stalked the lifeless form of “the Model” before grabbing a handful of hair and driving him down for a third and final DDT. The fans counted the three count along with the referee. </p><p> </p><p> <strong>Victor: Jake “The Snake” Roberts</strong></p><p><strong> Match Rating: 82</strong></p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Post Match:</strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> With “the Model” seemingly knocked out cold, Roberts retrieved the snake bag and proceeded to dump Damien, across the limp carcass of Martel! Slaughter, I shall be giving the orders as I order you into your dessert foxhole to cower before the Ultimate Warrior!!” Warrior beat his chest and snarled at the camera before walking out of the shot, presumably headed to the ring.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Rating: 74</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42352" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Belts/wwfworld0_zpsgpedzhxu.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Belts/wwfworld0_zpsgpedzhxu.jpg</span></a><p><strong> WWF World Heavyweight Championship</strong></p><p><strong> </strong><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Ultimate%20Warrior%204_zps7hmd1qxm.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Ultimate%20Warrior%204_zps7hmd1qxm.jpg</span></a><strong> </strong><strong><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">vs.</span></strong></strong><strong><span style="font-size:18px;"> </span></strong><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Sgt.%20Slaughter%203_zpscg2penqw.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Sgt.%20Slaughter%203_zpscg2penqw.jpg</span></a><span>http://rs288.pbsrc.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Sheik%20Adnan%20Al-Kaissey%202_zpsp3jqy03g.jpg~c100</span></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> The Ultimate Warrior © vs. Sgt. Slaughter w/ Gen. Adnan</strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> Back ringside Sgt. Slaughter, accompanied by Gen. Adnan (who Piper referred to as “Ad-noid”), was making his way down the aisle. Next, the the thunderous rock anthem that signified the Ultimate Warrior filled the arena and once again the fans were on their feet. The champion charged into the ring, unbuckling the championship title belt before sliding under the bottom rope. Slaughter and Adnan attempted greet the Warrior with a clothesline using Iraqi flag, but Warrior ducked under and came back with a double-clothesline of his own! With both Slaughter and Adnan down, Warrior broke the Iraqi flag over his knee and the crowd cheered. Warrior picked Adnan up by his collar and backed him into the corner where he proceeded to choke him with a portion of the broken flagpole. Adnan flailed helplessly until Slaughter pounced on Warrior with the other half of the pole from behind. He clobbered the champion as the disheveled Adnan rolled to the floor. Referee Earl Hebner warned Slaughter to drop the broken flagpole or he would disqualify him before this match even officially started. Seeing the damage done, and the Warrior wounded, Slaughter cooperated, dropping the stick and beginning the contest officially. </p><p> </p><p> Slaughter was merciless as he pounded the Warrior with big stomps and clubbing forearm blows as the Warrior struggled to the ropes to regain his footing. Slaughter didn’t give him a moment however, raking his face across the middle rope and delivering a devastating gutbuster for a 2 count. Next, Slaughter grabbed Warrior by the hair to pull him to his feet. Warrior battled back however with a bevy of right hands to the midsection the Iraqi-sympathizer. With the people behind him, Warrior delivered a knee-strike and a slam! </p><p> </p><p> Sensing the champion’s secondwind, Sarge rolled to the floor to try and slow the action back down. Warrior was quick to follow him and the two brawled ringside, with Slaughter tasting both the ring apron and ringpost before falling to the ground. Adnan scurried over and drew the Warrior’s attention. Warrior slowly stalked Slaughter’s cohort around the ring as Adnan continued to back-pedal! Warrior followed Adnan right into his trap however, as Slaughter waylaid the champ from behind, knocking him into to both the ringpost and the guardrail before depositing him back into the ring. </p><p> </p><p> Slaughter covered the Warrior and Earl Hebner counted 1, 2...and the Warrior kicked out. Slaughter returned to the attack dropping the Warrior with a stump-piledriver that looked to surely do the champion in. Slaughter cackled as he went in for another cover. Hebner again counted 1, 2….and another kick out! Next, the challenger hooked the champion and took him over with a back suplex and began signaling for the camel clutch! Slaughter straddled the Warrior and clamped the fingers tightly under the chin and locked it in. Piper screamed for the Warrior to hold on from the commentary table. </p><p> </p><p> Warrior, with his paint flaking away and sweat pouring down his face, continually shook his head that he wouldn’t give up. He kept pumping his fists and, in an incredible display of strength, climbed to his feet with Sarge on his back! He ran back intending to dislodge Slaughter by ramming into the turnbuckle but poor referee Earl Hebner was caught too and all three men collapsed to the mat! </p><p> </p><p> Seeing the referee down, General Adnan once again slipped into the ring. Warrior was waiting for him however and quickly depositing back to the floor with a clothesline over the top. The momentary distraction was enough for Slaughter to get up but his blows had no effect as Warrior began to shake the ropes and pound his chest feeling the power of the warriors course through his veins. Warrior shook off more blows by Slaughter and began to pummel him with his own punches. Next came the clothesline and the Warrior had all the momentum! A diving shoulder-block and the Palace of Auburn Hills waited in anticipation for the Gorilla-Press Slam and Splash combination that ended most Warrior matches. Warrior easily hoisted Sarge up and dropped him unceremoniously!</p><p> </p><p> Next, Warrior went into the ropes undoubtedly looking to seal the contest with the splash…</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Randy%20Savage%200_zpsgx1hmxto.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Randy%20Savage%200_zpsgx1hmxto.jpg</span></a></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> ...but the Macho-King had made it out to ringside and cracked the Warrior in the back with his scepter! Piper and Monsoon speculated that this was a mindgame played by “the Brain” (or “Boob-y” as Piper refered to him). Perfect had all of his normal swagger and bat his gum into the crowd with a cocky smile. When the Bossman’s “Hard Times” theme came on next, the Palace of Auburn Hills got on their feet. The heavyset lawman from Cobb County burst threw the curtain and charged the ring at full speed, sliding under the ropes and popping up wielding his patented nightstick as Perfect and Heenan both dove to the floor calling for Joey Marella to restrain the Bossman.</p><p> </p><p> It took a few moments for Marella to talk the Bossman into giving up the nightstick followed by a few more moments of negotiations to get Perfect back into the ring before the contest could officially begin. The two men circled one another for a few moments before Bossman went to lockup. Perfect used his quickness and slipped behind the Bossman and slapped in the back of the head. Piper was quick to quip “Don’t poke the bear.” An increasingly irate Bossman came at Perfect again who was able to avoid another strike before once again slapping the big man--this time flush in the mouth! With fury in his eyes, the former correctional officer charged Perfect who dashed out to the floor through the ropes. Bossman was quick to give pursuit and the chase was on. It was on the second complete lap around the ring that Bossman caught Perfect, grabbing a handful of his blonde hair and yanking hard to the floor! Now having the champion prone, Bossman rolled Perfect into the ring and dished out a series of stiff, open-handed strikes. Next, Bossman sent Perfect for a ride into the ropes and looked to deliver a back-bodydrop. Perfect saw the move coming and countered with a perfect cartwheel. Bossman popped up at the end of Perfect’s gymnastics routine and greeted him with a stiff short-arm clothesline that leveled the champ!</p><p> </p><p> The action continued this way for the next few minutes as Bossman battered Perfect from post-to-post. As Perfect flopped around the ring like a ragdoll, Heenan shouted feeble words of encouragement from the floor--however these were mostly drown out by the fans cheers. Bossman picked the champion up and tossed him with a giant fallaway slam. Next, the big man uncharacteristically began climbing to the top (or as Gorilla said “the high risk area”)! The challenger took flight but Perfect rolled out of the way at the last possible moment and Bossman crashed with a big belly-flop!</p><p> </p><p> Perfect took the advantage here implying his somersault neckbreaker on the stunned challenger. Next, he began pounding the big man’s lower back with a series of kicks and forearm smashes. As the Bossman grimaced and grasped at his weakened back, Perfect called for the end and pulled the big man up to his feet and hooked the leg for the Perfect-plex. Bossman, sensing what was happening, dropped to the mat and hooked Perfect’s leg for a small package! Marella slapped the mat for 1...2...and Perfect kicked out! Perfect quickly sprung back to his feet and hit the Bossman with a big knee lift. </p><p> </p><p> With the Bossman on his knees Perfect again called for the end. Bossman, still full of fight, had other plans and unloaded a quick series of strikes right to the champ’s “bread basket.” With Perfect now double-over, Bossman continued the punishment with a sharp uppercut that sent Perfect into the ropes--the perfect position for the Bossman jump across his back. </p><p> </p><p> Feeling the tide turning unfavorably, Heenan hopped onto the apron and began cat-calling after the Big Bossman. Bossman needed little encouragement to head after “the weasel” and stalked Heenan outside of the ring. Not wanting any part of a confrontation with the Bossman, Heenan led the big man back into the ring where Mr. Perfect lay in wait to knock the Bossman down with a perfect dropkick. Again, Perfect looked to take the Bossman down with another Perfect-plex attempt in the middle of the ring. This time he was able to take his man over with no problems, fingers locked, the perfect pinning combination….but as Joey Marella’s hand came down for the third time, the Bossman powered out and Heenan nearly fainted. </p><p> </p><p> Bossman let out a scream of adrenaline with a new found secondwind. Perfect came at WWF’s law enforcer with a series of chops but the Bossman just shrugged them off! Perfect attempted to send Bossman into the ropes but the big man countered and caught Perfect with the Bossman Slam! Joey Marella began the count: 1...2…but the count was stopped because Heenan had put Perfect’s foot on the rope! Bossman sprung up thinking he had won the title. Marella was trying to tell him otherwise giving Perfect a moment to come to. As the Bossman turned around he walked right into an awaiting Mr. Perfect who delivered a second Perfect-plex! There was no kicking out this time and Piper and Gorilla agreed that Bobby Heenan was the reason that the Big Bossman wasn’t the Intercontinental Champion right now.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Victor: Mr. Perfect</strong></p><p><strong> Match Rating: 79</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42352" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Koko%20B%20Ware%200_zpsyndupbm9.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Koko%20B%20Ware%200_zpsyndupbm9.jpg</span></a><strong> </strong><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">vs.</span></strong><strong> </strong><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/The%20Mountie_zpsfbwgdegv.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/The%20Mountie_zpsfbwgdegv.jpg</span></a><p><strong> Koko B. A clearly dazed and disheveled Randy Savage began to enter the ring and was quickly greeted by a running clothesline from the Bulldog right over the top! </p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://s288.photobucket.com/user/tew0720/media/WWF%201991/Road%20Warrior%20Hawk%2091_zpsxmdlp5lq.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><span>http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Road%20Warrior%20Hawk%2091_zpsxmdlp5lq.jpg</span></a><p><strong> 20: Hawk</strong></p><p><strong> </strong><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">In ring:</span></strong></p><p><strong> The British Bulldog (32:00)</strong></p><p><strong> Tito Santana (18:00)</strong></p><p><strong> The Undertaker (14:00)</strong></p><p><strong> Dino Bravo (10:00)</strong></p><p><strong> Kamala (8:00)</strong></p><p><strong> Jerry Saggs (6:00)</strong></p><p><strong> Shawn Michaels (4:00)</strong></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> The menacing Hawk was next out following the excitement. Just wanted to say thanks to anyone who took the time to check out the Royal Rumble...I spent a lot of hours (probably too many! ha!) writing it up--trying to get an authentic feel. Hopefully it's not overwhelming--I worry that I went overboard.

I'd love to hear some feedback--if people enjoyed it or have some criticisms so I can improve.

I will have a Meltzer-ish style monthly-recap coming later on as well as results of the prediction contest.

Thanks again for checking-in and hopefully the mood will strike you to leave some feedback. :)

<p>Great Royal Rumble Crossface! The time and attention you put into writing this didn't go unnoticed and it's appreciated <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

I enjoyed the entire event and all of your decisions make sense. It's interesting to see you go with the classic storylines of the time but with your own differences thrown into the mix. The changes you're making so far are ones that make sense and could've easily happened in reality. I respect that you're resisting the possible temptation of making HUGE changes right off the bat, instead your letting them happen organically and letting your stamp on the WWF develop over time. </p><p> </p><p>

I'm guessing that Jake Roberts/Rick Martel has hit its conclusion now. I'm interested to see what you've got lined up for Jake going into Wrestlemania. </p><p> </p><p>

And if you'd have given me 20 guesses at one of your surprise Rumble entrants, I don't think I would've ever picked "Iron" Mike Sharpe <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> I hope he sticks around, he was always one of my fave jobbers.</p>

Crossface, I second much of what Matty said previous-- great Rumble event.

Here's some specific feedback:

  • The Virgil turn was perfect
  • All of the backstage promos sound very authentic
  • Loved the way you weaved in Gorilla's comments
  • While Rumble match was well-presented and easy to follow...I will confess to being bored with Hogan winning. He is your figurehead and the logical choice however.
  • Rumble surprise entrants were a lot different than I expected (although I did predict Kamala!). That's not a bad thing as it was fun to see them...I just thought you might start a new feud here with a returning big name.
  • If I read correctly, Jake/Martel was the best match on the card. Interesting--I wouldn't have expected that. I am not surprised however that Rumble match didn't grade out well--I often find that Rumble matches/battle royals cap much too low to main event.

There's even more to comment on as you put together quite an extensive and detailed show. If more pops up, I'm happy to throw in my 2 cents. Overall--I'm still really digging this and excited to see how Mania begins to shape up.

-Rick Martel has finished up with the WWF following his loss at the January event. It's understood that WCW have offered Martel a very lucrative contract that McMahon was unwilling to match. This has changed creative plans for Jake Roberts as he was scheduled to continue the program with Martel through Wrestlemania. It's understood that the booking committee at Titan Towers are close to finalizing a major angle involving Roberts to ensure he has a prime spot on the Wrestlemania card.</div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

-Hawk of the Road Warriors is understood to "have major heat" within the WWF locker room for appearing in the Rumble match with what is being described as "significant impairment" due to drugs and alcohol. Backstage officials were not aware of Hawk's state before his number was called, otherwise a decision to hold him out of the match would have been made. It's said his fellow wrestlers are very upset about the unprofessional manor in which Hawk conducted himself, believing he was liable to hurt someone throughout the entire match. McMahon has fined Hawk heavily for the event, but the feeling is that the Legion of Doom on are "very thin ice" backstage and despite being top draws, do not have the trust of management.</div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

-Major creative plans were changed at Sunday's PPV. The original finish would've seen Randy Savage winning the Royal Rumble with the intent to go on and face the Warrior at Wrestlemania for the championship. I'm hearing that Hulk Hogan was totally uncooperative with the finish and creative was changed for Hogan to win. This trickled down to the finish of the title match as well setting up Hogan vs. Slaughter as the title program for Wrestlemania. </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

-Masked wrestler Del Wilkes, aka "The Patriot," has been scoring victories in WWF dark matches. It's said McMahon likes the youngster and thinks the character could play well given the current political climate. Look for vignettes promoting the character to begin airing soon.</div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

-WWF are in the market for some upper-midcard heel talent at the moment. The feeling is that this is the greatest area of weakness on the roster. WWF made a play for WCW free agent Mike Rotunda to help fill this void, but lost a bidding war with the Turner-owned company. Kamala was offered an opportunity to stay with the company to help fill that void following his appearance at the Rumble, but denied preferring to work freelance for the time being.</div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

-WCW has officially left the National Wrestling Alliance this week. This will surely be a big blow to the Alliance. Neither WCW officials nor representatives from the NWA have commented on the matter, preferring to keep the move quiet as possible. Sting has discreetly been stripped of the NWA World Championship, so it will be interesting to see how fast the NWA crowns a new champion. WCW have created a new World title but have yet to name their first champion. </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The NWA US, US Tag Team, World Tag Team and TV titles are WCW property and the champions have not been stripped. </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div><p><span style="font-size:12px;"><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

-Popularity has been down across the country for WCW throughout the New Year. We here at the Wrestling Observer are reclassifying them as a "Cult" sized company. Additionally, would people be interested in a Royal Rumble statistic tidbit? I was thinking of posting a spreadsheet with entrants, eliminations, time-in, etc.</p>

<p>Good idea to bring the Patriot in, that's if Meltzer is on the money with his reporting <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> He will be a great fit for early 90s WWF. Many possibilities for him in this era in both the singles and tag team ranks. </p><p> </p><p>

Sad to see that you lost Rick Martel. I feared this may be the case after seeing how you wrapped the feud with Roberts up at the Rumble. The exact same thing happened for me in my 1991 game <img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

<p>Yeah, losing Martel gives that scenario a lot more sense. I can see why you went with the blowoff match being at the Rumble now. Also too bad that you couldn't get Rotunda; no IRS <img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

The Rumble was definitely quite a show, you should have some very good developments coming out of it. I don't mind Hogan winning it, even if the original plan was to have it go to Savage. The war going on and all the patriotic hoopla almost makes Hulk the de facto winner no matter what, as that's what sends the fans home happy.</p><p> </p><p>

I don't really mind one way or the other if you do a Superstars report. If you want to put the time into it then okay, it'll be cool; but overall, I've found in my own writing that it takes time away from actually writing the show. If you want, then try it on and see if it helps or hinders your progress.</p>

<p>Diary looks great, I love this 91 mod!</p><p> </p><p>

Speaking of (just to pile on), in my WCW 91 game Martel is the WWF Champion, and he's touring with New Japan.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm thinking of signing him away just for pure assholery. Anyhow, keep on keepin' on brother.</p>

Tito Santana vs Black Bart

Tito Santana got things started squaring off against the formidable brawler Black Bart. The two had a decent back and forth series exchanging control in a tightly contested match. The outcome was definitive after Santana knocked Bart to the mat with a Flying Forearm and locked in the pin.

The Brother Love Show

http://rs288.pbsrc.com/albums/ll163/tew0720/WWF%201991/Brother%20Love_zpso4cvx9vl.jpg~c100

A replay of last week’s Brother Love segment is shown, highlighting Ted DiBiase offering Virgil a second chance at employment if he was willing to beg for forgiveness.

Brother Love commented that he loved “family reunions” and once again welcomed “The Million Dollar Man” to the pink-curtained set. DiBiase said that he’s prepared to offer Virgil the “second chance of a lifetime” and called Virgil out.

Virgil joined the program, his face stone, not displaying any emotions. DiBiase went on to once again insinuate that Virgil was destitute and would no longer by living the high life that his money has provided. DiBiase continued to say it didn’t have to be that way if Virgil would simply “get on his hands and knees and beg” for his old job back. Brother Love smiled at Brother DiBiase’s “generosity” but Virgil stood still rubbing his chin before looking around the Lakefront Arena seemingly asking the fans on how to proceed. The cheers built and DiBiase grew impatient:

“Come on Virgil! Get on your knees like the good loyal dog that I know you are and let’s put all this ugliness behind us” the millionaire said.

Virgil stayed still and the cheers continued. DiBiase reached into his pocket and produced a bundle of 100 dollar bills wrapped in a money clip. “Let me make this easy for you Virgil.” he said as he dropped the cash wad on the ground. “Now there’s a little incentive for you to get down right in front of me. Take the money and let everyone know that you’re not as dumb as you look.”

As the cheers continued, Virgil suddenly snatched the microphone from DiBiase’s hand and barked a loud, confident “No!” and the Lakefront Arena responded with support. On commentary Piper praised the former bodyguard, “good man Virgil! You don’t need that piece of garbage!”

DiBiase leaned in real close “Virgil, what about your poor mother? Huh? Living in that nasty one bedroom apartment on the bad side of town? What about your sister and her son? Huh? What about them waiting in line for food stamps? You’re going to pass up your chance to help your family? I never knew you were so selfish!”

Suddenly Virgil snapped and shoved DiBiase to the ground, clearly having been pushed over the line. He quickly mounted DiBiase and began delivering a series of big fists as backstage officials flooded the set to break up the beating.

The Bushwhackers vs The Orient Express w/ Mr. Fuji

The Bushwhackers and Orient Express have had an issue going back from before the Royal Rumble when Mr. Fuji’s interference led to a double-disqualification. Fuji interference in their 6-man tag match at the Rumble event had continued to leave a bad taste in the mouths of the Bushwhackers, and the lovable cousins from down under were definitely looking to settle the score here. The Express took the early advantage here with Kato working over Luke. With Butch leading the fans, Luke was able to battle back get control following a botched double team maneuver by Tanaka. Luke was able to tag in Butch and the two knocked Kato down with the signature Battering-ram! Seeing his team in jeopardy,Fuji jumped in and cracked Luke on the head with his cane for the disqualification!

Victors: The Bushwhackers via DQ

[/b]

“Mean” Gene was on the interview platform for the next segment and introduced Intercontinental Champion Mr. Perfect and his manager Bobby “the Brain” Heenan.

Gene started the interview asking Heenan and Perfect about the Big Bossman, noting that the big lawman has stated he has unfinished business with the Heenan Family. Bobby Heenan assured Gene that he wasn’t worried about the Big Bossman and that Mr. Perfect already got him out of the way at the Royal Rumble. Heenan continued that the only thing he was worried about concerning the Bossman was his mother appearing in another one of Bobby’s nightmares!

Okerlund followed up by asking the duo if they had a preference about who could win the battle royal later on for the right to face Perfect for the title. Mr. Perfect responded by saying one of the nice things about being a “perfect champion” is not having to worry about “the less than perfect contenders!”

Demolition w/ Mr. Fuji def. The Simpsons

In a relatively short match Mr. Fuji brought his other team to bear against The Simpsons, a local brother team. As Roddy Piper made a few attempts to work in Simpsons TV show themed jokes during the match, Smash and Crush made short work of the local duo. Crush ultimately made the cover following Demolition Decapitation.

Gene was in the Event Center with a Special Report focused on the first potential contenders to face new World Wrestling Federation Champion: Sgt. Slaughter. Gene starts with the former champion, The Ultimate Warrior. Given Randy Savage’s interference in the title match at the Royal Rumble, one would have to think that Warrior should be the natural choice for number one contender. The problem? The Warrior has been uncharacteristically silent since the January event and it’s unknown when he will return.

That leaves next the curious case of the Macho-King Randy Savage. Savage has been claiming to be number one contender since late in November of last year. Supposedly Savage and Slaughter even have a handshake deal in place for a future title match, but certainly WWF President Jack Tunney would never sanction a title match under those conditions.

Gene goes on to say that there’s another challenger who has taken exception with current champion, Sgt. Slaughter: one “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. Following Sgt. Slaughter’s anti-American comments last week on Superstars, the patriotic star had this to say:

“Every arena that I have the pleasure of wrestling in, I’m honored to be greeted with chants of USA! USA! And as our brave men and women fight the good fight over in the Middle East and I hear Sgt. Slaughter disparaging this great nation of ours--well that just makes my blood boil! Well tough guy, Hacksaw Jim Duggan won’t sit around and let those words go unpunished! So I’m laying out a challenge to Sgt. Slaughter right now to step up and face me one on one and I’ll bring the WWF title back home to the good ol’ USA! Hooooo!”

“Mean” Gene concluded the segment by revealing that Jack Tunney would be making an announcement on Superstars next week concerning the future of the WWF Championship that would surely have big ramifications or Wrestlemania, just a mere 6 weeks away.

10 Man Battle Royal to establish a number 1 contender to Intercontinental Championship

Featuring: Dino Bravo, Greg Valentine, Haku, Jimmy Snuka, Kamala, Koko B. Ware, Nikolai Volkoff, Saba Simba, The British Bulldog, and The Warlord

After the 10 men made their entrances things got underway very quickly with a wild exchange of big hands and action clustered all about the ring. The Warlord made his mark early on dropping both Saba Simba and Nikolai Volkoff over the top.

Elsewhere, Dino Bravo and Greg Valentine were tied up as “Superfly” delivered a series of headbuts to Kamala. Haku deposited Koko over the top and the Bulldog dropkicked both Bravo and Valentine out. The Warlord quickly gave Kamala the ride to the floor and we were left with the final four: The Bulldog, The Warlord, Jimmy Snuka and Haku. As Snuka and Haku paired off, Davey Boy was left to slug it out with the menacing Warlord. Warlord launched Davey into the ropes looking for a big boot, but Davey ducked under and and caught Haku with a clothesline instead knocking him out!

Snuka came at Warlord with a series of chops pushing him back into the corner. Next, “Superfly” came with a high-cross body at the big man, but the Warlord caught him and pushed him out! Warlord turned around just in time to catch a big clothesline from the British Bulldog! Warlord wobbled and Davey Boy came off the ropes a second time but the Warlord would not go down! The Bulldog came in with a third big clothesline that finally brought the Warlord over the top and out! The British Bulldog was the new number one contender to the Intercontinental Championship!

Victor: The British Bulldog

The British Bulldog celebrated for a few moments for the fans as he indicated that the belt would soon be around his waist!

Jake “the Snake” Roberts vs. “Iron” Mike Sharpe

In the main event of program, fan favorite Jake Roberts (with Damien) locked up with longtime WWF veteran “Iron” Mike Sharpe. Roberts took the early advantage as Sharpe came at “the Snake” out of the gate and Roberts ducked before begining a series of quick jabs. Roberts stayed in control throughout the early going hitting both a running knee lift and a gutbuster on Sharpe for a 2 count. Sharpe came back at Roberts with questionably loaded black forearm brace and was able to secure Roberts in a tight bearhug. It wasn’t to be Sharpe’s night however as Roberts broke free of the bearhug and hit the short-arm clothesline and the DDT to bring the bout to a conclusion after 10 minutes.

Victor: Jake Roberts

Match Rating: 78

Superstars went off the air with Jake letting Damien slither across the unconscious form of Mike Sharpe as McMahon and Piper joked that the overly cleanly Mike Sharpe would be showering for weeks following this…
