<p>Minor suggestion. Wellington is cold wet and windy so it's not overly reptile friendly. I once spent 3 days in Wellington where the wind never dropped below 80Klicks an hour and the rain was coming in sideways. It was incompatible with human or reptilian life.</p><p> </p><p>

Rotorua however - that fits the ancient lizardman culture perfectly. It's like a place from a different era in terms of the environment. You cant bury people in the ground because of the underground heat etc etc. It also smells of sulphur.</p><p> </p><p>

<p>Wellington is nicknamed Windy Wellington and it's football team is the Hurricanes which kind of sums it up. It's right at the southern tip of the North Island and the prevailing conditions coming off the Cook Straight make it the worlds windiest city. </p><p> </p><p>

New Zealand is a real land of contrasts. The far south of the south island is pretty bitterly cold and the central part of the south island is largely on a plateau and mountain ranges with glaciers and the like so it's pretty darn cold. That said it also has Queenstown which is like a paradise on earth. The further north you go the warmer it gets. Then you get something like Rotorua with it's thermal springs and lakes that smell like sulphur which is both beautiful and surreally alien. Up North you get the Bay of Islands and it's sunburn city if you aren't careful. </p><p> </p><p>

Most of the people are in the north of the North island because the climate is so much warmer. Auckland has like 1.5M people and the next closest city is Wellington which has what 400K. The 3rd biggest city Christchurch on the South Island has been hit by Earthquakes a few times in the last few years too because the south island is still fairly active geologically. The whole thing is newer geologically so it's a lot more diverse with it's topography.</p><p> </p><p>

I love it when people try to pronounce Maori place names too because it's got some really odd pronunciations that just don't sound like the word looks. Whangarei is a good example people try to pronounce it like "What" and the actual sound is "Fa" so it's confusing especially for a Pakia (anglo) like me. I'm used to Aboriginal names for places and whislt they might be odd looking they tend to sound the way they are spelt - Parramatta, Woy Woy, Ettalong are all said the way they are written.</p>

That all sounds very exciting. I should make holidays in New Zealand, when time is again for it. Maybe I'll take me next year's vacation then I travel a month with the family to Queenstown or North Island.

 

Didn't they filmed lord of the rings in NZ?

Yeah lots of things film in New Zealand and Australia because the balance of trade makes it cheaper, there are tax breaks, the language is English, they have relatively new studio facilities and top class effects houses. Throw in interesting diverse outdoor locations and it's attractive to film here. They did the Star Wars prequels and the Matrix films in Sydney and LOTR in NZ.

 

NZ is great and you can drive around everywhere easily. Australia is much larger and more spread out but internal air fares are cheap if you buy in advance so travel is easy enough too.
