General diary comments/questions/critiques: Waiting for this PPV for a long time -- Masumi has to win the title, right? I mean, the PPV is called "Dancing With The Devil?" .... but the bigger question: are we going with Immortal Technique's "Dance With The Devil" for our theme song? I think the song was out at this time.

I could have used Arn here, but I'm a much bigger star in Japan. Plus it'll be a long flight going straight from this show back to the States for Nitro, so I did it myself rather than asking anyone else to do it. Anyway, I had an interpreter alongside me to translate for the fans in the arena. Basically it was just a generic message about this being a monumental night in women's wrestling history, and I thanked the fans for coming out to see it. I kept my actual talking to a minimum and focused on playing to the crowd nonverbally, allowing my popularity to drive the segment and get the fans excited. I shook hands with many of the fans in the front row before settling in next to Joey and Tracy to provide color commentary for the rest of the night. Tracy at this point can't be trusted as the only color commentator on a PPV show, which is why I inserted myself for a three person booth here. It was clearly a good decision, because I had a chance to watch this segment back later and it was easy to tell that Tracy was nervous. <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B+</div></div></blockquote> <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">Alexis Laree vs. Etsuko Mita (w/Eric Bischoff) http://i.imgur.com/VwQDgVe.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/cAw5Dl8.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/eX0IXCy.jpg </div> This feud began when young Alexis scored what we played up as a major upset over Mita in a singles match on the November 9th episode of Renaissance. The former World Champion did not take the loss lightly, and after a couple of months of feuding via attacks, promos and a couple tag matches, we finally did the singles rematch as the first match on this historic PPV. Mita has ceded a lot of the spotlight to newer heels Devil Masami and Aja Kong since dropping the title, but she's one of our best and that's why I trusted her to get the job done here. She did exactly that. Alexis worked hard and carried her own weight, but it was the skill and popularity of Mita that made this a high quality match; definitely the best of Alexis' young career so far. Laree proved her first win was no fluke, holding her own and scoring several near-falls in a back and forth match as Bischoff watched in concern, afraid that The Empire's female representative would lose to the upstart in this high-profile match. Alexis went to the middle rope and attempted a tornado DDT--but moments before impact, Mita was able to stop her momentum, hoist her over her shoulders and nail the Death Valley Driver! The 3 count followed, and Mita had avenged her previous loss. <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B</div></div></blockquote> <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">Kyoko Inoue vs. Takako Inoue http://i.imgur.com/vjvktnZ.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/SKNBQrE.jpg </div> We made a big deal of the fact that these two women (no relation) are quite a decorated tag team, with three championship reigns together in All Japan Women's during the mid-'90s. But Kyoko had rejected Takako's proposal to revive their team here in WCW, saying that her former partner had become too focused on her appearance instead of concentrating on her career. She taunted Takako with that a few times during the match, mocking and angering her by striking a few faux-modeling poses. With the talent of these two women, their familiarity with each other as well as their stamina, I told them to hold nothing back and go all out to steal the show. While I wouldn't say they truly stole the show, they did succeed in getting the crowd buzzing with this fast-paced match. Both women are fairly versatile in the ring, and they blended brawling and technical wrestling very well throughout this match. Takako attempted to hit her 'Takako Panic' flying knee off of the top rope, but Kyoko cut her off and hit an overhead belly to belly superplex. After that she executed her devastating Victoria Driver finisher (aka Kenta Kobashi's Burning Hammer, which Kyoko created) for the pin. <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B</div></div></blockquote> <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">http://i.imgur.com/XvzeNmR.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/iVkKXFP.jpg</div> Chigusa Nagayo and Aja Kong did pre-taped promos for their match tonight, in which Kong's AAAW Singles title would be on the line despite not "officially" being a sanctioned title in WCW. Nagayo again referenced her past with that title, which she was the first champion of when GAEA opened and is the only woman to win it three times. GAEA is gone, but she said she'll be happy to win that title for a fourth time and shut Aja's mouth. For Kong's part, she said that it doesn't matter whether All Japan Women's or GAEA are still open, or whether WCW recognizes her claim as the true world champion. All that matters is that she knows she's the best and so do all of the other women in WCW, because none of them had been able to take the "big red" belt that Toyota now wears away from her and none of them could take this one away from her now. Both women were fine here, but Tracy's commentary was poor as she tried to talk about Kong's promo and got the two titles mixed up. (For the record, as a refresher: our world title, the belt that Manami Toyota now holds, dates back to Mildred Burke in the 1930s and later became the top title in All Japan Women's. Kong held that title but vacated it when she left AJW. Etsuko Mita won the title shortly before we bought the company last January, and we continued to recognize her title reign thereafter. The AAAW Singles title, the one Kong holds, was the top championship in GAEA until we bought that company from Chigusa Nagayo in late 2002, shortly before launching Renaissance.) <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B</div></div></blockquote> <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">Our Generation vs. Daffney and LuFisto http://i.imgur.com/OophliK.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/MAaFqtV.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/ZHerQIf.jpg<img alt="nduX6fx.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/nduX6fx.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div> I knew this one would be a bit of a struggle since all four of these women are really still just being introduced to the Japanese fans. The original plan of Mayumi Ozaki being in the match as Daffney's partner would have offset a lot of that, but I don't regret making the decision to fire her. Fortunately the popularity issue was helped out by the fact that both teams have really strong innate chemistry, which was the reason this match was put together in the first place. There wasn't a clear leader or anyone who was lagging far behind the rest, as all four women worked at a pretty similar level. I'd give the nod to Melissa as the best performer of the match and Nattie as the worst, but there wasn't much separation between any of the four. The action was fine, but this match was really all about advancing the budding storyline between these two teams. Nattie was recuperating on the floor after being dumped out by LuFisto, but Daffney caught her by surprise with the mist to the face! The referee had been tied up with LuFisto and Melissa and hadn't seen it, but Nattie was blinded by the mist and unable to return to the ring before being counted out. I thought this was a good way to incorporate the mist into a finish without the logic gap of the referee making the 3 count despite the victim's face being covered in mist, plus this allows us to continue building this feud. <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: C+</div></div></blockquote> <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">Meiko Satomura vs. Shinobu Kandori <img alt="OCuJKqq.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/OCuJKqq.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />http://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/gfF32sn.jpg </div> I'll be honest: I was surprised to see so many fans pick Kandori to win this match in our prediction contest on the website. The 38 year old Kandori's role in WCW has been to serve as a reliable hand who puts over our top women. Satomura, 23, isn't quite at the top level yet, but we believe she has all the potential in the world. I think you can see where this is going. The action in this match was about Kandori trying to use her judo techniques to throw Satomura to the mat, and then transition into a match-ending submission hold. Satomura proved elusive though, and the few times Shinobu was able to get a submission applied, Meiko either made the ropes or found some means to slip out or counter. Satomura eventually hit her <a href="https://i.imgur.com/feozUwd.gif" rel="external nofollow">Scorpio Rising</a> kick to win the match. This match was fine, but it was noticeable how much better Satomura looked than the 16-year veteran (though Meiko could be considered a young veteran despite her age, as she's been working for seven years now.) <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B-</div></div></blockquote> <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div> We aired a pretty lengthy Starrcade highlights package. I thought our production team did a great job here, making an already great show look even more epic. That wouldn't have made any sense with the show literally being named for the Toyota/Masami match though, so this was the semi main instead. As I'd done with many of the matches on the show, I had Dusty work closely with these two women on putting the particulars of the match together, and you could definitely see his influence as the match was structured beautifully to get the fans behind Chigusa as she tried to battle from underneath against the fearsome Kong. Kong's physical decline was apparent in this match. Even though Aja's six years younger than Chigusa, it was the 22-year pro who carried this match as the clear star, doing a great job in building sympathy for herself while simultaneously getting Aja over as a monster. The match lived up to expectations despite the problems, as this was the best women's match in WCW history to this point in time. The fans were fully behind Nagayo, believing that the '80s mainstream star was going to turn back the clock here and return to world championship level. They popped big when she locked Kong in the Sasori Gatame (aka the Sharpshooter, made famous by a very talented, handsome and humble Canadian), but their enthusiasm dipped when Aja powered out, and deflated completely as Kong got back to her feet and connected with the Uraken backfist. Chigusa had given a great effort and proved she could still hang with the best, but it wasn't enough to stop Aja Kong. <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B+</div></div></blockquote> <blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43035" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;">http://i.imgur.com/741TrEA.jpg Devil Masami vs. Manami Toyota {©} http://i.imgur.com/gOVE3CN.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/EiVoLiY.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/LyKOnBY.jpg</div> We put together a video recap of this feud, beginning with Toyota coming to the aid of her friend Toshiyo Yamada, then showing Devil beating Toyota in a tag match. That earned her a title shot on the December 7th Renaissance, in which she had her sleeper hold locked on when the time limit expired. The rematch was tonight, this time with a full sixty minute time limit if necessary. More good work from our production team here in hitting the major points of this feud and hopefully getting people excited for the match to follow. <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: B+</div> Unlike most of the matches on this show, I didn't have Dusty work with these women to painstakingly plan this match out. He only relayed the finish and the general idea of how I wanted the match to go, and the rest was left up to them. This was because I think Manami Toyota has a great mind for the business, and I trusted her to be able to handle the finer points of how to structure this match. She was instructed to make sure the match was even, with Devil getting plenty of offense in but not necessarily dominating, and to work a more deliberate pace early on and gradually build up to a big crescendo at the end. Saying that Toyota rewarded my faith in her would be an understatement. I needn't have worried about this match being overshadowed by Kong vs. Nagayo, because there was no doubt by the end that this was not only the match of the night, but hands-down the best women's match in WCW history. I would bet it's the best women's match any US-based company has ever put on, and was also the best match either of these women have had in many years. Toyota is such a well-rounded performer and a great babyface, and Masami brought solid brawling and a tremendous heel presence to the match. Both women did their part here and deserve a lot of credit for this great main event. Toyota was the better performer, but the 40-year old Devil did good work as well and was by no means carried through this one. About the only negative comment I can make about the match is the color commentary of Tracy, who didn't do a very good job at stressing the importance of Toyota trying to avoid Masami's sleeper, which was the focal point of the entire match. There were two big questions here: could Masami get the sleeper on again, and if so, could Toyota escape it? The first question was answered affirmatively as we were closing in on the twenty minute mark, because even though Toyota was able to kick out of a sitout powerbomb, she was too weakened to prevent Devil from going to the sleeper. Thus began the heated struggle, with Masami trying to put the champion to sleep while Toyota fought to find some way out. The fight left Toyota and she sank to a seated position, where referee Charles Robinson raised her arm and let it drop once... twice... ...but the champion raised it back up on the third attempt! She fought back to her feet, got a running start and dropped down to her knees, causing the challenger's head to hit the top turnbuckle hard. That dazed Masami, and Toyota capitalized with the <a href="https://i.imgur.com/8lgNKn9.gif" rel="external nofollow">Ocean Cyclone Suplex</a> to defeat the Devil. <div style="text-align:center;">Grade: A <img alt="nG8aWZm.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/nG8aWZm.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />http://i.imgur.com/zVT0XcD.jpg</div> Toyota's friend and partner Toshiyo Yamada joined her to offer her congratulations, and I left Joey and Tracy behind to join them inside the ring. We did a puroresu-inspired bit where I presented her with the championship and shook her hand, and then we had her cut a celebratory promo. I let her just say whatever she wanted to here. I obviously couldn't understand the actual words she was speaking, but all I had to do was listen to the reaction of the Tokyo fans to tell that she did a fantastic job here. She talked a bit about the uncertain state that women's wrestling had been left in with the decline and later the complete closure of all of the former top joshi groups, but said that thanks to WCW and the Women's Wrestling Renaissance program, women's wrestling was not only alive but thriving. She put over Masami as a tough opponent, but said she had fought through and remained the champion, and she intended to represent WCW as its world champion for as long as she was physically able. She also apparently came up with a new spur-of-the-moment catchphrase too. Something about the Flying Angel (her nickname) soaring to new global heights or something. Maybe it gets lost in translation, but as long as the Japanese fans react to it I guess that's all that matters. This was a much better promo than I expected, and a great way to close the show. They wound up having the chemistry, so I signed Mamaluke, made them a full-time team and sent them down to developmental. Very nice show! Sad how the way the game is made makes women's promotion not last long. Honestly, the game doesn't reflect the way pro wrestling works IRL. It's all based on numbers and grades, while the crowd IRL is almost the driving factor of the shows.

Back on topic. though It would take a million years for the American female workers to match the japanese ones, like IRL, I do hope that they improve to a good level! Wonder if you'd put them on nitro once they reach that level.

Also, was bret really popular in japan? I know he fought misawa and tiger mask (sayama), but other than that, i thought it was owen who's the more popular hart, due to him being a regular in NJPW before WWF.

He says Ric Flair was never one of his favorites growing up because he loved watching the guys who were agile and could fly, but he always respected Flair for everything he did during his career. He thought Flair would be the perfect person to watch his back against Eric Bischoff's Empire, but he underestimated Flair's desire for attention. "Well you've got my attention now, Ric. I know you're not here tonight, but the next time you show your face at a WCW show, you and I need to have a face-to-face!" (B+) Sting returned to his winning ways with the Scorpion Deathlock on Elix Skipper. (B-) Lance Storm comes into the aisle and congratulates Sting on his win, but says if he can be serious for a minute, Sting is part of WCW's past, while Lance is its present and future, and he'll prove it by beating him at Sin. Sting says he's welcome to try, but there's still plenty of venom left in this scorpion! (A) Billy Kidman, Torrie Wilson and Teddy Hart are chatting near catering when Christopher Daniels and Brian Adams approach. Daniels mocks Hart for deferring to the man who pinned him at Starrcade, and says it didn't matter who won that Shootout and earned the Cruiserweight title match, because no one will be ending the sacred reign of the Fallen Angel any time soon. This leads to Teddy challenging Daniels and Adams to a tag team match on behalf of he and Kidman, and the match is agreed to for next week on Nitro. (C+) The Hardys came to ringside to watch the next match, and with good reason: Arn Anderson had agreed with the Jung Dragons' point and granted them a title match at Sin. Hayashi and Yang sent a message to the observing champions by defeating Hayabusa and Jinsei Shinzaki with a double diving leg drop on Jinsei. (B) Bobby Heenan is interviewing Jamie Knoble, asking him what comes next after he failed to beat Christopher Daniels for the Cruiserweight title at Starrcade. Knoble barely has time to admit it was a setback before The Empire barge into the camera shot. King Corino tells Knoble that he has a lot of nerve to take interview time away from true stars such as himself, and no one cares about what he has to say anyway. Knoble obviously doesn't appreciate the slight. He calls Corino disrespectful and says maybe he oughta teach him some manners inside the ring. Corino laughs the threat off as the group walks away. (B) Bryan Danielson and Chavo Guerrero Jr. have been participating in a live chat with fans on WCW.com all night, with Chavo constantly needling Danielson about losing his mask at Starrcade. He makes a comment about Danielson getting what he deserved for disgracing the traditions of lucha libre by wearing a mask in the first place, and finally Danielson has had enough. He says he does in fact respect the traditions of lucha, and with that in mind he challenges Chavo to a lucha libre staple at Sin: a two out of three falls match! Chavo hesitates at first, but realizing the cameras are rolling and he can't back off without losing face, he accepts the challenge. © Harry Smith showed flashes of his potential with some powerful offense, but the experience and creativity of Mortis was too much for him to handle. (B) Mortis and Alexander taunt Harry after the match, and Davey Boy shoves past them to check on his son. (B) Booker T was MIA, but Bobby Roode had to put that out of his mind because he had a huge match against Diamond Dallas Page. Roode more than held his own and had Dallas in trouble for long stretches with some fine technical wrestling, but DDP ducked a Northern Lariat and snapped off the Diamond Cutter for the win. (B-) In an interview with Bobby Heenan, Scott Steiner says Starrcade was a huge wake-up call for him. Rick says their recent misunderstanding is behind them, and they'll have a big announcement to make at Sin. (B) Our next match held Sin implications: AJ Styles and Hugh Morrus teamed against Shane Douglas and Shane Helms, and if Douglas' team won, he would get his desired rematch against Styles at Sin. Despite some problems between Helms and his manager Kimberly, Douglas persevered and secured his rematch by pinning Hugh. (B) Vignette: Made in Italy promise to grace us with their presence on January 26th and bring a little style to Sin. © Fit Finlay drops by Arn Anderson's office to remind him (and us) of the fact that he's at nine successful defenses of his TV title, meaning with just one more he has the option of vacating the title and challenging for the US title, or he could try and get to 15 defenses and earn a crack at the World championship. Arn says he hasn't forgotten, and he wants to make sure that Fit's 10th title defense will be a memorable one. That's why he asked Fit here: to introduce him to the man who will challenge him at Sin. In walks Sean O'Haire, who says nothing and lets his imposing physical presence do his talking for him. (B) Our main event saw Rey Mysterio Jr. in action for the first time since winning the World Heavyweight Championship, taking on Alexander. Alexander showed a much more aggressive style than we're used to seeing from him, but Rey still got the upper hand and looked to be closing in on the victory until The Unnatural came through the crowd and attacked him for the DQ. (B) The rest of Salvation swarms the ring, forming a circle around Unnatural and the downed Rey. Unnatural crouches down next to Rey and speaks to him. "We're surrounded by a protective cocoon, Rey. This noble group of men who stand all around us saved me from my own hubris and gave me true purpose for the first time in my life. What is your purpose, Rey? Is it being the World Heavyweight Champion? Is it being a hero for all these impressionable children in the audience wearing your replica masks? All of those things are superficial, Rey. I'm going to take your title from you at Sin, but not out of greed or my own selfish desires. I will take it--for you. I will take it to help you shed this false skin you currently wear so you can find your true self, just as I did." That changed tonight, as she pinned Sonoko Kato with an Oklahoma Roll. (D+) New developmental call-up Momoe Nakanishi delivers a pre-taped introductory promo: she declares herself the "Genius of Pin" (referring to the fact that she can flawlessly execute intricate 'flash pin' sequences at any time.) (C-) A video package shows Booker T losing the World Heavyweight Championship to Rey Mysterio Jr. at Starrcade, then leaving the building in a daze. The video poses the question of what is next for Booker T, who has not been seen in WCW since that night. (B+) Takako Inoue recovered from her loss at Dancing with the Devil by defeating Kaori Yoneyama. © Kyoko Inoue and Aja Kong cut promos on a singles match signed between them for next week, in which Kong will "unofficially" put her AAAW Singles title on the line. Inoue has held the title now recognized as the WCW World Women's Championship on three occasions, but she says she welcomes the chance to add the other major joshi championship to her trophy case. Kong says that she will demolish another challenger next week and continue to prove that she is the undisputed champion of the world. (C+) Chigusa Nagayo promo: she says that she's disappointed she failed to defeat Aja Kong, but she won't let it discourage her or make her think it's time to call it quits on her career. She knows how close she was to winning that match, and the fans know it too. Chigusa promises not to give up and says she will continue to come to the ring and give it her all. (B) Manami Toyota and Toshiyo Yamada renewed their partnership in our main event against Daffney and LuFisto (who probably need a team name since they'll be regular partners going forward.) It looked as if Daffney was about to hit Toyota with the mist in a replay of Dancing with the Devil, but Melissa Anderson ran down to the ring and distracted her. Yamada went on to get the win for her team, beating LuFisto with a Saito suplex immediately followed by a roundhouse kick to the head. (B) Etsuko Mita comes to ringside and confronts Toyota, saying that Manami has been carrying "her" championship long enough, and now that she's put that "little pest" Alexis Laree behind her she wants it back. Toyota doesn't back down, telling her she'll meet her in the ring any time and any place. (B) Post-match, Knoble grabs a microphone and says that where he's from, you settle a grudge with your fists. King Corino insulted him last week, and he wants to make his statement in a match. Corino comes out and seems amused that Knoble even thinks he's worth his time. He's a future world champion, while Knoble is a nobody. "But hey, I've got a few open minutes to kill this Sunday, so I accept!" Corino says. (B+) Billy Kidman and Teddy Hart used some nice high flying against Christopher Daniels and Brian Adams, but a cheap shot from Adams took Teddy out of the equation. Kidman fell victim to a two on one, and Daniels finished him with the Last Rites. (B) A brief shot shows Rey Mysterio Jr. arriving at the building earlier in the day, with a voiceover revealing that he's said he's going to confront The Unnatural after Unnatural's main event match against Rob Van Dam. (B-) Post-Nitro footage from last week: the Jung Dragons walk backstage and taunt the Hardys, who were still standing nearby after having watched the Dragons' match against Hayabusa and Shinzaki. They tell the Hardys that they had their moment at Starrcade, but at Sin the Dragons will finally get their chance and they aren't going to waste it. Jeff tells them to bring it on, because if heroes and ladders couldn't stop them, dragons won't be able to either. (B) The Empire trio of TAKA, Candido and Palumbo beat Hugh Morrus, Konnan and Harry Smith after Palumbo hit the Thrill Ride on Smith. (B-) Post-Nitro footage from last week: Shane Douglas gloats in AJ Styles' face about winning the tag match and earning his US title rematch. He says that merely pinning Styles to take his belt back wouldn't be satisfying enough, so he wants to make it a submission match. That would seem to be a disadvantage for AJ since he has no notable submissions at his disposal while Douglas has won many matches with the crossface, but he accepted those terms nevertheless. (B+) In an interview with Bobby Heenan, Bobby Roode reveals that Booker T has told him he'll show up at Sin to address the fans. (B-) Lance Storm warmed up for his match with Sting by submitting Ernest Miller. (B) Post-match: Sting walks into the aisle and says he was very impressed with Storm's performance, and thinks he's very talented in general. "You may be annoying, but you're great! But how great are you? How great will you be when you have to dig down deep, and there's no partner to tag out to? How will you do when it's show time, and you're all on your own? On Sunday at Sin, we'll find out!" (A) With Bryan Danielson watching on from commentary, Chavo Guerrero Jr. didn't have much trouble defeating local wrestler Jack Evans. (B) Fit Finlay cuts a promo on Sean O'Haire. He says O'Haire already had his shot at the title and failed (only partially true; Finlay retained the title, but O'Haire won by DQ when Chuck Palumbo interfered.) But he won't complain about it, because he's no coward and has never backed down from a fight. O'Haire might be bigger and stronger, but Fit is tougher, and he'll prove it on Sunday in his 10th title defense. We then cut to a shot of O'Haire watching on a monitor, and he just smiles, eagerly anticipating his chance to win the first singles gold of his career. (B+) We'll have to wait until Sunday to find out what the Steiners are going to announce, but tonight they were on the same page in a decisive beating of 3 Count. (B) RVD is warming up for his main event match against The Unnatural when Roddy Piper walks up to him. He says he knows he has a lot on his mind tonight, but he wants to let him know that he's invited his old friend Ric Flair onto Piper's Pit Sunday at Sin, and Ric has accepted. Roddy extends an invitation to Rob as well, and RVD says he wouldn't think of missing it. (A) Unnatural has the biggest match of his career on Sunday, but he couldn't afford to look past former World Heavyweight Champion Rob Van Dam. RVD brought the fight with his usual array of kicks and aerial maneuvers, including a split-legged moonsault that came a half a second away from ending the match. Unnatural got the knees up to block the Rolling Thunder, and that was a major turning point in the match. Unnatural Selection was delivered, and the #1 contender picked up a huge win less than a week before his championship challenge. (A) As promised, Rey Mysterio Jr. comes to the ring after the match. He gets right in The Unnatural's face and says that he can try and play all these mind games, but they won't work. They didn't work when Rey beat him at Halloween Havoc, and they won't work now. The rest of Salvation come into the aisle at that point, and Unnatural smiles widely. "Don't you understand, Man of Mystery?" he says, taking a seat in the corner. "I am playing no games and spreading no falsehoods. When I speak of your 'American dream' becoming a nightmare before your very eyes, I speak from personal experience. When I caution you about the fleeting and superficial accomplishments you focus on, I do so as a man who once obsessed over those same things and had to learn the hard way that it was folly. I didn't tell you I'm going to help you find your true self because I hope to distract you. I told you I'm going to do so because you are in dire need of Salvation, and just like my brothers in the aisle once gave it to me, I will give it to you this Sunday at Sin." (B) Meiko Satomura continued to add wins to her resume, this week defeating Kaori Yoneyama with the Scorpio Rising kick. (C+) Vignette: Manami Toyota and Toshiyo Yamada are chatting at an autograph signing when Etsuko Mita taunts them with the announcement that Mita and Yamada will meet in a #1 contender's match next week. She assures the friends that the title won't come between them, because Yamada won't win the #1 contender's match and won't come anywhere close to Toyota's title. (B) A lengthy video package hypes the Sin PPV tomorrow night, specifically focusing on the main event where The Unnatural will challenge Rey Mysterio Jr. for the World Heavyweight Championship. Not that long ago I believe she was one of only two or three people in the entire company that the game rated as 'Excellent' workers, though that number is increasing. (Kaz Hayashi FTW!) They're developing okay, but the Japanese women are understandably carrying the brand in an in-ring sense. Fourteen of the Renaissance women are rated as 'Great' in-ring workers or above, and thirteen of those are Japanese, with the lone exception being Nattie. Alexis is on my Next Big Things list and Melissa and Allison Corino are on the Hot Prospects, so hopefully they'll see some great growth over time. They started on Nitro, but going back there would feel like a demotion. I think carrying their own brand where they're the focus makes the women a much bigger deal than being in the middle of the card on Nitro. Keep in mind that he's been the color guy on Nitro from the very beginning, and I have huge TV exposure in Japan. I think this mod does in general overrate the international popularity of major American stars though. I now have four 99 rated matches. Two of them were PPV tag title matches between the Hardys and Heroes. The other two are random main events on Nitro...both featuring The Unnatural.

One could call it.... an Unnatural happening! *ba dum tish*

If I can be serious for a moment though ( ) it's too bad that this is Rey's first defense, because the "first title defense" just seems like such a gimme. You almost have to give the current champion the first title defense, because otherwise his big moment is ruined and he was just a lame duck champ, and something like that is hard to get over. But man, Dustin's character here is just way more interesting. So much so, in fact, that I think it shows just how uninteresting Rey is. Sure, he's a great talent and a huge fan favorite, and if TEW did merchandise breakdowns you would probably see his mask replicas selling out all around the world, and he'll gift you some awesome matches. But you've done such an amazing job with Unnatural and Salvation that I would almost love to see what they would do if they get their hands on the big gold belt. Besides, you know that if he gets over out of nowhere, I'm definitely not opposed to a nice Dustin Rhodes title reign

But, anyways, on to Sin.

The Unnatural - I know it's basically a throwaway, but I'm pulling for Dustin here.

The Jung Dragons - The Dragons get their chance! They won't waste it!

AJ Styles - Submission match is an interesting stip for this, as at this point in his career AJ wasn't much of a mat wrestler. But I get the feeling that we will be seeing the Calf Killer make an appearance about 12 years early.

Sean O'Haire - I feel a little bad for Fit, as he is so close, but I can't see him getting past O'Haire. I don't remember if I said this before or not, but I do really love what you've done with the TV title. The "trade up" format is really a nice mechanic for it.

Christopher Daniels - Speaking of Kidman, maybe I just don't remember something happening, but where has Konnan been? Did he just quietly leave WCW?

Sting - I love me some Lance Storm, but I'm already pulling for too many underdogs at the top of the card. Sting picks up a nice win.

King Corino - A nice match for Jamie to get some exposure, but no.

Bryan Danielson - A win here can end this feud finally and move these two on to new things.

MOTN: Hardys vs. Dragons

Titles: 3

Next champion: Unless someone else is able to rocket to the top of WCW, I have to go with the majority so far in saying Corino.
