Big Bang Aftershocks

From the desk of Eric Bischoff:

It was a pretty wild week, finally getting the relaunch of World Championship Wrestling running. Judging from the reaction of the live crowd and the internet sites afterwards, it seems like it was a hit thus far; now I have to keep that momentum going, if we are to make a quest for our lost glory. I let everyone know just that before the show, with some leaving the room feeling as though they’d been given some sort of “psycho sermon”. I don’t care what they call it, as long as it gives me results.

The opening match both retired two titles and introduced a new one, as I phased out the Cruiserweight and Hardcore championships and brought in the new “no limits” X Division belt. It isn’t a perfect merger of the two titles that are gone, but saying that it’s all about “no limits” is something I feel we can have some fun with in the future. For now, however, I gave it to Rey as the first champ because it was a way to make up to him that we had promised he and Kidman Cruiserweight Tag Team titles. But I realized that our cruiserweight division couldn’t really support two divisions, especially one that had to feature four of them at a time. But this will mean nobody can complain about if we have to fudge someone’s weight, and people who are bigger than 225 but fit that sort of style can compete for it. I think fans will be generally receptive to some of the plans that I have set in motion. As for the Hardcore title, well… Shane was doing great as the champ, but the title was way lower than he is. Fans called it a copycat title of the WWF’s version all along, so erasing it erases that stigma of being “junior WWF” like how Russo wanted WCW.

The WCW Panel was meant to be a staple of the brand new WCW Worldwide. Unfortunately, since I am currently unable to shop around for a network to air Worldwide because no broadcaster in this universe is willing to negotiate a show until three months after I’ve gotten another show, that means the Panel idea has to be shoehorned into my future Nitro and pay-per-view broadcasts. They do give a nice break for the live and home crowds if I put them on at the end of the first hour or so, and I plan on having them on the pay-per-view pre-shows and post-shows to do recaps, wrap-ups, and potentially announcements for the following week. Giving Tony his own panel to lead was the only way I got him to agree to step down from being our lead announcer and finally give it to Mike, who is in general a better announcer and someone who is a way better influence on our backstage. Hell, Schiavone has gotten in more backstage trouble than even Scott Steiner within this year so far; too much more of that and I’ll be giving the lead role of the panel to someone who doesn’t cause stupid pranks. And yes, Gene is fully aware that Jeremy Borash is being groomed to replace him eventually, but at his age, he is alright with that; once Jeremy is up to snuff, then Gene can stop standing there holding microphones and just helping with the panel until he finally hangs his microphone up for good.

The show only had one hitch all night, and it came from the strangest of people: Booker T. My initial plans had seen him losing to Lance Storm again, tapping out in the arm lock. I had to ask Lance to protect Booker pretty hard in order to get that loss to go through on Thunder, but this time, Booker just wasn’t having it. I really don’t want to feel like I’m playing a politics game anymore, but honestly I think it was only because Booker felt he’d be losing to a team featuring Elix Skipper. Well, Booker is one of our bigger, brightest, and youngest main eventers right now, and I didn’t feel like I could afford him being upset at me on the first night of our relaunch. With this in mind, I made it clear that Lance was to be kept strong in the match then, hence the closing moments which saw Booker tapping out with no official. I have to change my original plans slightly, but I feel I can make this change work out well enough.

During Big Bang, I saw Paul Orndorff working with some of his former Power Plant students again. He was teaching Jindrak and O’Haire a little more about using the microphone, and showing Yang some pointers on being a successful babyface. I find that a little funny given “Mr. Wonderful” was never known for his babyface work. Don’t get me wrong, he was solid enough as a good guy, but he was a natural as a heel. Kevin Nash told me that he thinks Chavo Guerrero Jr. is one more vanilla midget who couldn’t get crowds of dogs to follow him if he was wearing Milkbone underwear. But Bill DeMott said that AJ Styles is really looking to be a good worker, and that the kid is worth getting behind.

After the cameras were off, I got the boys together to tell them I was pleased with how the show turned out. I especially praised Scott Steiner for his great performance in the main event (with Scott saying “You damn right you’re impressed!”), pointed out Ric Flair again for his continued great role as our on-screen authority figure (Flair was pleased with this, but still continues to give me sideways glances every chance he can), and complimented Lance Storm for holding the eight man tag together so well. He was pretty surprised to be given such praise, and seemed pleased to get called out positively.

“The Nature Boy” called me up the next day, saying that he felt like he wasn’t making enough money to justify how popular he had become again with the fans. He even used my own words against me, saying that I keep telling people what a great job he has been doing. I told him that I had no problem paying my top workers, trying to ease his ego a little bit. That was until he asked for a $13,190 raise! I thought quickly, telling him that I did appreciate how he hasn’t dogged any performances because he wants to be in the ring instead of just an authority figure role, but that I couldn’t do all of that because of the financial state of the company. But with some calculations, I got him to agree to $9,892, seventy-five percent of what he was asking for initially. He agreed and seemed pleased about it, and he should be; at $33,692, he’s making a fairly solid chunk of money per month, albeit not nearly as much as the guys like Goldberg, Sting, or Buff Bagwell.

The WWF saw a small signing spree this past week, which wouldn’t bother me except that a lot of the guys were some who I was targeting to bring into WCW and the new X Division. A lot of them I had gotten into contact with, but then a few days later I was seeing them announce that they were joining either OVW or HWA. Guys like Shawn Hernandez, Joey Matthews and Christian York, Guido Maritato, Nova, EZ Money, Chris Chetti… I had wanted them all, but apparently Vince sunk his teeth into them harder than I could. I’m not sure if he’s just screwing with me or it’s all coincidence, but if it is his purposeful doing, then karma got him back on Raw. The internet was abuzz with the news that K-Kwik suffered a majorly dislocated shoulder during a pre-show match with Tazz, of nobody’s fault but it will probably keep him out for the majority of his current contract. But Kwik has only been a jobber to the stars at best; not a huge loss. However, during the match against Matt Hardy, Tag Team champion Christian suffered a shattered knee after a bad spill out of the ring. Initial reports were that he could be out until sometime into 2002, but a successful surgery saw that time drastically reduced.

Fortunately, I was able to make a few of the contract offers stick. Jimmy Hart has joined us; I sent him to work with the kids at Wildside, but the bigger upside of that is getting his continued work with our entrance music. A few other people were signed to go straight into Wildside, but I have three people to debut within the next month. One of them came from ECW, when I told him that he could potentially be a new cornerstone of what is replacing the Cruiserweight division he said that was more than Vince offered him. One is a young Samoan with some fine heritage that we can probably get him over with. And one of them came very, very highly requested by Gabe Saplosky, who I think may have almost strained himself doing a backflip kick when he was given the news. They may not be big names already, but hopefully people around the world will come to know them very soon.

The new pay-per-view era of World Championship Wrestling has begun, with a Big Bang. As long as I keep things running smoothly, then they should never end with the same kind of whimper that we nearly did last month.

----------

It is that time again, prediction answers! From my counting right before Big Bang was posted, BigBad1013 had come out with the win by only one point ahead of a bunch of high scorers! For the record, I counted two debuts on the show; Jeremy Borash and Gabe Saplosky a.k.a. Chris Lovey.

This leaves one show left on the big prize wheel, which will be WCW Pride. It will be coming up in two in-game weeks, which means I have two Nitros with which to build the first three hour show of the new era up!

I will probably have had enough turnover that I'll post it up again.</p><p> </p><p> A few names have been purposely left off the lists as they had not debuted in either company officially yet. Since it should come as pretty much known knowledge the way I wrote the narrative, DDP is most definitely with the WWF now, but his debut is being saved for a big moment.</p><p> </p><p> There are a bunch of names from the WCW list who aren't listed anymore, such as the Mamalukes and 3 Count. Unless I've noted it specifically in one of Eric's thoughts, they are not released and their contract hasn't run out; I sent them down to Wildside.</p>

Caught up at last! I think it's a good decision to unify CW and Hardcore titles, you have a lot of talent that would fit into that X-Division hub. I got sad when Daffney turned heel, but if that will give her a bigger role on TV, all's good. I actually put her and Vampiro together in my diary too (way baack and for a month or so), but they had no chemistry whatsoever. All in all, I'm officialy on board ;)

He says that just like WCW, it looks like “Da Man” is back! He says that over the past few months he’s seen people defeat Scott Steiner and then get a World championship match, so it’s time for either Eric Bischoff or Ric Flair to come out here and give him his earned title shot! Goldberg says that it’s time Steiner stops ducking the man who should be champion! Instead of an authority, however, “Big Poppa Pump” comes to the top of the aisle, with Steiner telling Goldberg that he gets nothing, because he is still iron clad contractually obligated to keep wrestling nobodies until replicating his 1998 streak. Midajah produces a list for Scott to read as he tells Goldberg that he can just shuffle back to the midcard to face losers on Goldberg’s level such as: <em>“Eban Kragis; Crush and Wrath, the Kronik; Diamond Dallas Page; Miss Hancock; the former Jung Dragons, Ping and Pong; Chyna; Screamy Smiley; Fatu and Meng; the Revolution and Lord Steven Regal; the Four Horsemen; ‘The Big Bitchy Wolf’ Kevin Nash; and of course, Booker T,”</em> and then after all that, he can come see Scott about a title shot after all that so he can retire him for good! Steiner adds that <em>“And speaking of ducking challengers, you’re lucky that WCW kept you away from ‘the man with the largest arms in the world’ during your first streak, because I would have shoved that streak up your ass if you weren’t ducking me all through 1998!”</em> Goldberg starts telling Scott that they can prove who ducks who by bringing his jacked-up ass down to the ring right now and he can be next, but “The Nature Boss” Ric Flair joins us instead! Flair says that in his own way, Scott is unfortunately right, because he’d love to make that title match for right here tonight on the first Friday Nitro in Las Vegas, so he can see Steiner get his ass kicked all over the Hard Rock arena! However, what he can do is prove a point to Scott not to let his mouth overrun himself, and that’s to book a non-title match between Scott Steiner and Goldberg for this Sunday night at WCW Pride! Flair then adds that since the two of them feel the other has ducked their challenge in the past, then he is going to make it a match where neither can run from the other – the always brutal, vicious spectacle which we haven’t seen in years that is an Indian Strap match! Ric says that the two of them are going to be joined with a hard leather strap by the wrist and can only win by pinfall or submission, and we will see which man is better and which takes a huge hit to their Pride! Wooooo!</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><em><span style="font-size:8px;">Notes: This was all unscripted for the three of them, though we did give them the whole thing about ducking one another to play off of. Scott improvised well with his “list of midcarders” gimmick. Goldberg performed well as he really enjoyed not being scripted, and his performance was really good. Flair did masterful at reading the crowd and interacting with them, coming off fantastic. The show is off to a strong start that got the crowd hotter, though all three announcers came off weak in comparison.</span></em></p><p><em><span style="font-size:8px;"> Rating: A+</span></em></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> “Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage along with his intern, Jeremy Borash. Gene is hyping Jeremy up, telling him that this is the big leagues now, kid; he better not mess up, because he has a face for telephone and Gene can make that happen if he makes him look bad. They are joined by Ric Flair, woooing and strutting around as animated as he can. Flair asks Okerlund how Borash is doing as his intern, with Gene saying that he messed up his coffee earlier, so he’s on the cusp. Flair says that Gene is gonna want to get that coffee so he can stay awake for the main event, because for the first Friday Nitro, Ric is booking a special Champions Carnival elimination style six-man tag team match! He says that he’s putting Scott Steiner and Jeff Jarrett, along with a partner they can agree with, against Rey Mysterio Jr., Sean O’Haire, and Mark Jindrak! Woooo! He claps Borash on the back and tells him to give Gene some “Irish coffee” next time, before walking off still hitting his “Woooo”s. Gene asks Jeremy what Irish coffee is, with Borash saying he’ll make some up.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><em><span style="font-size:8px;">Notes: Gene enjoyed the freedom to improvise with Flair, who did well.</span></em></p><p><em><span style="font-size:8px;"> Rating: B-</span></em></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p> <hr><details><summary></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Coming Soon to WCW</strong></p></div><p></p><p></summary></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><iframe width="220" height="180" src="</p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EZYzqstO2EA?rel=0&controls=0&showinfo=0" rel="external nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/embed/EZYzqstO2EA?rel=0&controls=0&showinfo=0"</a> frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Rating: F+</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></hr></details></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43111" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><hr><details><summary><strong>Yang vs. AJ Styles</strong></summary> </p><p> In order to make up for the ruined match that these two had at Big Bang, they are given the first match of the new Friday Nitro era to show their stuff. Tenay and Hudson talk about how these two are a part of the brand new WCW X Division, which isn’t about weight limits, it’s about no limits. Leia Meow tries to interject herself where she can, but in the end Styles utilizes his Spiral Tap to secure the victory.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Match Time: 7:24</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Notes: Tenay and Hudson’s good chemistry behind the table showed, and their announcing lifted the bout. Bagwell says that a few years ago, he and Luger were at Nash’s side in the Wolfpac, but it’s clear that it is time to put that big, old, ugly wolf down, and time for the young, clever, sexy wolves to take his spot at the top of the pack! Luger adds that Kevin is simply a means to an end to Totally Buff, that if he had stayed home last Friday night, they would have just attacked someone else. All they were out to do was make an explosion at the Big Bang, and they did it. Luger comments how he has been on Nash’s side and the opposite side of the ring from him many times, and now that Nash is alone, he has no chance; especially since “The Total Package” is in the best shape of his life with only 4% body fat. Now that Kevin knows he’s no match for them, he should just stay home and collect his paycheck for not working; Buff chiming in that after all, not working and getting paid big for it is what Nash knows how to do best.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43111" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><hr><details><summary><strong>Screamin’ Norman Smiley vs. Buff “The Stuff” Bagwell</strong></summary> </p><p> Norman is definitely a well-respected, world-renowned wrestler, but Bagwell starts this match on the offensive and rarely lets up. Once he does let up to start posing for the crowd, Smiley gets in a spinning bodyslam before performing the Big Wiggle, which really throws Buff off his game! He almost hooks in the Norman Conquest, but Buff turns it into a back suplex before getting on the middle turnbuckle to deliver the Buff Blockbuster and pick up the win in this rather amusing contest.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Match Time: 4:05</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Notes: Without having good chemistry, Madusa always manages to help Luger’s timing. But the crowd got a nice breather and the announcing helped make it look better than it was, which was just a short match to put Buff over.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Ratings: B / C-</em></span></p></div><p></p><p><hr></details></p></div><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> “Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage, welcoming everyone again to the first edition of Friday Nitro! He seems to be looking around, almost confused, then starts to bring in his guest at this time, when Jeremy Borash rushes into view. Gene scolds Borash, saying that he should have been here already; <em>“And where’s my damn coffee? You’ve ruined my whole opening!”</em> Jeremy is apologetic, and that’s when Jeff Jarrett and the Harris Boys step into the frame. Jeff says that he doesn’t give a damn about “the odd couple slapnuts” in front of him, as long as one of them holds the mic so the people can listen to “The Chosen One”. Jarrett says that it’s about time that he lands in a main event, and he is going to start the new era of Nitro with a bang – Gene asking if he means since he didn’t have a great moment at The Big Bang last Friday? Jeff tells him that he or one of the Boys will slap the bald off his face with too many more cracks like that, before leaving. After they’re gone, Okerlund turns to Borash and asks him where he was at, he should be protecting Gene when someone like Jarrett, Ron, or Don start threatening him! <em>“Kids these days,”</em> he says, before throwing it back to Mike, Scott, and Arn.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Notes: Gene and Jeremy are comedy gold, a very good pairing. Jarrett improvised well off of Gene here as well.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Rating: B-</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43111" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><hr><details><summary><strong>“Das Wunderkind” Alex Wright vs. Sting</strong></summary> </p><p> This is a huge match for young Alex, and he makes the most of it by going on the attack right as the bell rings. He hits a series of dropkicks to put Sting down on the mat, following up with a nice snap suplex to get a near fall. Wright gets a bit too full of himself and starts to dance though, and that gives Sting enough time to get his bearings beneath him. When Alex goes for his bridging German suplex, “The Stinger” blocks it, elbowing Wright in the jaw before connecting with a one handed bulldog! He takes over with knife edge chops and clubbing punches, sending Alex into the turnbuckles to hit the Stinger Splash! He hits another Stinger Splash, before throwing him down and hooking up the Scorpion Deathlock to get a nice submission victory on this first episode of Friday Nitro!</p><p> </p><p> “The Stinger” isn’t done yet though, after he sees to it that Alex is helped out of the ring he gets a microphone to address his fans. Sting thanks everyone for their support over his recent layoff, and thanks them for still supporting WCW after all this time, saying that it’s the only place you can or will ever see the man called Sting! He continues to say that while it is true that the only thing for sure about Sting is that nothing is for sure, one thing that he and everyone watching knows is that Sting just doesn’t feel right unless he’s in the hunt for that World’s Heavyweight title! Sting says that he has worn the big gold seven times in the past, but he wants to make it one more time for those who have supported him all this time.</p><p> <em>“You’re full of crap, Sting!”</em></p><p> Those kind of words draw attention, and attention Sting receives as “The Dog-Faced Gremlin” Rick Steiner comes out to the aisle! Steiner says that Sting can pander and rile up the crowd all he wants, but Sting has only ever been about Sting; he’s nothing but a selfish, over the hill relic who shouldn’t have bothered coming back when Scott sent him away! He tells Sting that the line for those who want a piece of “Big Poppa Pump” has a big bouncer in the way, and it’s him, so he better either prepare to fight or go home! Sting tells Rick that if it takes bouncing Rick’s head off the ring a few times, then he’ll do it! Sting says that if Rick wants to bark like a big dog, he’ll treat him like one – he makes a challenge to him for this Sunday night at WCW Pride! Steiner says that he’s never backed down from a fight, let alone one from Sting, so he’s on. Sting howls at the crowd, saying that this Sunday, it’s showtime!</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Match Time: 5:07</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Notes: The match was a little on the short side, but it was mostly about putting Sting over anyways. During the post-match segment, Sting really enjoyed being off-script for his adoring fans. The surprise was Rick, who has been doing some good improvising as of late. That’s ‘cause WCW knew I’d kick his ass and ship him back to Atlanta on a gurney! ‘Big Poppa Pump’ was the standout star in World Championship Wrestling in 1998, or would have been if they weren’t so busy protecting that big bald white trash redneck!”</em> He throws it over to Rick, who warns Sting not to get too cocky; just because Scott is usually the one shutting people out of wrestling lately doesn’t mean “The Dog-Faced Gremlin” has become a pushover. <em>“It doesn’t matter whether I win or lose, as long as I take out the trash for my brother!”</em> Scott grabs the title away from Midajah, holding it up and saying that this is what everyone wants – Flair, Nash, Page, Booker, Sid, Goldberg – but “the symbol of genetic perfection” has it, and since none of them are his freaks, he’s not giving them anything!</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Notes: We kept this a little short to keep Scott on track, it still didn’t work. He came off as a real star though, masterfully improvising his way through it. Rick also did well, enjoying his short spotlight. Midajah came off poorly, though.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Rating: B+</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Lance Storm along with Major Gunns comes out to the ring now. He says that he is about to be serious for a moment, and tells everyone that last Friday, the world witnessed a tragedy. By a horrific turn of events, he was robbed of defeating Booker T yet again, he watched him tap out, but some lousy American referee screwed him over, just like Americans seem to enjoy doing to Canadian heroes. Storm tells Booker T that he wants him to come out here right now and right this wrong, by bowing down to him and telling him that Lance Storm is the better man! “Double A” says that he doesn’t think that will be happening, as the crowd boo that scenario. Those boos turn to a nice pop when Booker T appears at the entrance. He tells Storm that he’s sorry to say, but that ain’t happening – not tonight, not any other night! Booker says that he has an idea for Lance: <em>“One on one, you and me, next Sunday night at WCW Pride… in a Pride match.”</em> He explains that the rules are simple: they each wager something valuable to themselves, then enter a steel cage, and the first man to scream submission loses! Storm is very pleased with this idea, accepting almost immediately, saying that he knows exactly what he wants from Booker. <em>“Long years, you’ve spent here in WCW gaining fame and winning championships. This is what I want to take from you, Booker – I want your legacy! All the glory and titles that you’ve won over the years, the history books will change to say that those were won by Lance Storm! They aren’t befitting of you anyways, you’re just a dumb American; they should have always belonged to someone more suitable, someone who’s better than you, someone from Calgary, Alberta, Canada; someone like Lance Storm!”</em> Booker looks to the crowd, before giving his answer to that. <em>“Dog, you don’t even get it. But you’re gonna get it this Sunday. And when I beat you in the Pride match, you’re gonna give up your Canadian pride! When you give up, you won’t just be giving up to me, you’ll be giving up your country. No more Canadian National Anthem, no more ‘Canada is better than America,’ no more Canadian Hero – you’ll never talk down to Americans again just because you’re from Canada!”</em> Storm is livid, but after conferring with Major Gunns, in the end, he accepts this wager; <em>“after all, it’s not like you’ll ever be able to make me submit!”</em> Booker tells Storm to save the drama for his mama and enter the match, but when it’s over, don’t hate the player – hate the game!</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Notes: Arn’s commentary came off pretty weak. The presence of Gunns always helps Storm, and this got the crowd hotter.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Rating: B</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> At the midway point of Nitro, we go backstage to the WCW Panel. Tony Schiavone starts off by saying that this first Friday Nitro is definitely the most exciting night in the history of this sport that he has ever been a part of, but that may just become eclipsed by WCW Pride this Sunday! They discuss the card that they’ve been handed for this Sunday, which features the Indian Strap match between Goldberg and “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner; a Pride match seeing Lance Storm versus Booker T; Sting taking on Rick Steiner; the WCW debut of Kid Kash; and “The Prodigal Son” Dustin Rhodes will take on C.W. of the Problem Solvers. They talk briefly about each match, but turn their attention to the rest of this evening to hype up the Champions Carnival six-man tag. Chris Lovey says that it will officially be Rick Steiner joining brother Scott and Jeff Jarrett, to take on the Natural Born Thrillers and Rey Mysterio Jr. </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Notes: Tony performed well, but Borash looked a little lost while Lovey seemed completely out of his depth.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Rating: C-</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Unexpectedly, we find ourselves in a dark, candlelit room when we leave the Panel. The face of Vampiro smiles evilly in the flickering lights, as he says that the time for punishment is coming again. He explains that Crowbar was punished for his greed; next we will see someone be punished for their pride. He calls it fitting that his first companion in the darkness is Daffney, someone who was overlooked as a meek, wayward waif in the past – but now, she will be at his side as they usher in the new testament of pain, punishment, and pleasure to World Championship Wrestling. More will be coming to be at their side… soon, very soon…</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Notes: Vampiro did well with no script this time, getting his points across nicely.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Rating: C+</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> We go to a regular backstage hallway where “The Franchise” Shane Douglas is seen. Shane seems to not be in the best of moods after his Hardcore title was taken and subsequently losing to Rey Mysterio to miss out on wearing the new X Division title. He talks to the cameraman, telling him that what we are about to witness is going to be a prime example of “the so-called man” holding down the best talent in the industry, and Shane wants it on videotape so that he can point to how little the business cares about those who make it the best. He arrives at the office of Ric Flair, barging in without knocking to find Flair on the phone. Ric tells the other person that he has a visitor, holding his hand over the speaker to ask what Douglas wants. “The Franchise” launches into a tirade about how all these years, Flair has done nothing but try to keep him at the bottom of the barrel, especially after Shane beat him up last year, but to outright rob him of the championship that he was defending week in and week out, bringing the ratings to Nitro at it’s bleakest hour, and then to only give him a few seconds to try and prepare for an athlete like Rey Mysterio Jr., is just too far! Shane asks, no, he demands reparations for this, and since Bischoff isn’t around, that means Ric has to get off his high horse and give it to him! “The Nature Boy” looks Shane over, before standing up and telling him that if he ever barges into his office like this again, he’ll send his “Franchised” ass straight home! However, he tells Douglas that he’s happy he’s here like this, because this is a fire, a drive that he has been wanting to see out of Shane for a long time! <em>“You’ve coasted by on what God-given talent you possess, but that’s not what makes champions, pal; it takes the guts, the fortitude, and the drive to go out there all night long, bleed, sweat, and pay the price, to take what you know is yours!”</em> Ric says that if Shane wasn’t prepared for Mysterio at Big Bang within a few seconds, then he shouldn’t have won the title anyways! But – since now he’s showing this fire, these guts, he’s going to give him one more shot, and not in a few seconds; Shane is going to have the next 48 hours to prepare himself, because at WCW Pride, “The Franchise” will get a rematch for the X Division championship, in Mysterio’s first title defense! <em>“Now get out of here, so you can start doing your homework on Rey and see if you can take that gold away from him!”</em></p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Notes: Shane struggled with improvising off of Flair, holding his own on his part but turning into a blubbering fool once Flair began. Maybe he was afraid that “Naitch” was going to go completely off the script on him? Ric, on the other hand, comes out of this looking like an amazing boss character, and he really had the crowd in the palm of his hand.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Rating: A</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> “Mean” Gene and Jeremy are barely able to be seen around the towering frames of the Natural Born Thrillers, as Gene asks them about tonight’s Champions Carnival. O’Haire says that tonight is he and Jindrak’s night to show that they deserve these titles and their place in WCW among the elite athletes. Palumbo adds that doesn’t mean they are taking a break from The World, as they still want Stasiak’s head on a platter for what he did to them, with Jindrak saying that all they need are names on dotted lines and they’ll destroy the World, once and for all!</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Notes: Gene and Jeremy make a good pair.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Rating: C</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> The Filthy Animals come to the ring, with the fans behind them all the way. Konnan speaks on this, saying that anyone not “bowdy bowdy and rowdy rowdy” can just go ahead and toss the salad of “the kay-oh-double en-ay-en” especially “the Mexi-can’t and Japa-nope” coming to the ring who he and Kidman are about to roll up for 4/20! That also extends to Shane Douglas, as Rey Mysterio Jr. takes the mic to say that Shane couldn’t get it done at Big Bang and now that he’s the first X Division champion, Douglas isn’t going to take it from it now, either.</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43111" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><hr><details><summary><strong>The Filthy Animals vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Kaz Hayashi</strong></summary> </p><p> This is a very short match that was just designed to get Kidman and Konnan a win, as Kidman pins Hayashi with the Kid Krusher fairly easily.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Match Time: 2:40</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Notes: Tygress’s presence helped Rey during the promo, then did good work outside the ring during the match. Simon has a problem with dancing fools coming down to the ring and trying to make all these people laugh and smile, when they don’t need that; what they need is to follow Simon’s self-help, and all their problems will be solved! He tells everyone that what you need to do is whatever Simon says, and he will lead them all to great places! Out to the entrance comes “The Cat” Ernest Miller, who tells Simon to <em>“Shut the hell up, you flat-top fool!”</em> Miller says that the only problem that Simon should worry about is “The Cat” putting his foot up his ass – somebody call his mama, he’s bout ‘ta whup some ass!</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Rating: D+</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> Call it WCW ineptitude or just odd placement, but instead of going straight to the ring for that match, we cut to a satellite promo from “Big Sexy” Kevin Nash. He’s highly upset with Totally Buff, saying that his announcement that he was going to make at Big Bang can wait; now, he just wants to kick their jacked up, musclebrained asses! He wants one of them to face him this Sunday at WCW Pride, saying that first he’ll take one down, and then the other.</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Rating: B+</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43111" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><hr><details><summary><strong>Disqo vs. “The Cat” Ernest Miller</strong></summary> </p><p> This is just another short match, it probably should have been played as a comedy but it wasn’t. Simon and C.W. help Disqo where they can, but it isn’t enough as Miller is able to get Disqo into the center of the ring (away from his companions) and hit the Feliner to pick up the win.</p><p> </p><p> After the match is where it got more interesting, as Kanyon steps out of the back with a microphone. He starts taunting “The Cat”, saying that he should call off the two’s match this Sunday at Pride because if he couldn’t protect Ms. Jones, how is he going to protect himself when Kanyon comes to defeat him? Miller tells Kanyon to come to the ring and fight right now, but Kanyon says he could have easily come down to the ring and attacked him during the last match; but instead, they will! The Problem Solvers then jump Miller from behind, with the three of them laying him out with a three man assisted spinebuster. Kanyon simply smirks, thanking them for solving his problems for him as Mike Tenay calls Kanyon a coward and a bully!</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Match Time: 3:03</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Notes: The crowd were still pretty hot, which meant having these two work them was a failure. Vicious says that he will be watching with baited breath as Scott Steiner and Goldberg do battle this Sunday, but he hopes that Goldberg leaves enough of Steiner left for him to Powerbomb! Because it is time for Sid to truly reign as the master and ruler of the world!</p><p> </p><div style="text-align:right;"><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Notes: Gene came off very poorly here, almost like he was bullying Jeremy.</em></span></p><p><span style="font-size:8px;"><em> Rating: B-</em></span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43111" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p><hr><details><summary><strong>Champions Carnival</strong></summary> </p><p> This is a six-man elimination style tag team match. The Steiners throw Mysterio around like a ragdoll when they have a chance to, but Rick is the first eliminated when O’Haire and Jindrak connect on him with a superkick and dropkick combination before Mysterio dropped a leg from the top rope on him. But Scott goes on a rampage after his brother’s elimination, forcing Jindrak and Mysterio out using the Steiner Recliner and a mighty, ring shaking powerslam, respectively. The World and US champions pool together to try and take down O’Haire, but he is able to rally the fans behind him and eliminate Jarrett by shoving him away from a superplex attempt and hitting the Seanton Bomb on him! “Big Poppa Pump” feels confident to be in the ring with this young opponent, but O’Haire takes his intensity up a notch and takes the fight right to the World champion! He nearly gets the pinfall after a superkick that is heard all through the arena, but when he goes up for the Seanton Bomb, Midajah grabs his ankle. She is finally made to get down from the apron by Nick Patrick, but Steiner has his lead pipe, and he smashes it over O’Haire’s head! Sean goes limp, sitting on the top rope, as Steiner disposes of the evidence. He climbs onto the middle rope and pulls O’Haire into an avalanche fallaway slam, before locking the Steiner Recliner on the nearly unconscious Sean. He finally taps out, weakly, awarding this match to the World champion, though Arn says that this may be a loss in the record book but showing he could hang with the champ is never a losing effort.</p><p> </p><p> But apparently Scott doesn’t agree, feeling like he’s been shown up by the young upstart. He tells Midajah to give “it” to him, which turns out to be a leather strap! He starts beating on O’Haire with it, screaming Goldberg’s name! Sean’s ribs take a massive pounding from Steiner, and he locks the Recliner on again! We don’t have to censor it for Turner anymore, I’m surprised it took this long for Scott to start swearing! Goldberg helps O’Haire to his feet, raising his arm in victory, as Steiner raises the World Heavyweight championship. Ric Flair comes out and says that neither man will duck the other at WCW Pride as they are strapped together in a (non-title) Indian Strap match! (B-)</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> The WCW Panel cordially welcome everyone to the WCW Pride live coverage pre-show, an hour of action like only World Championship Wrestling can offer, live before the pay-per-view starts! They waste no time in hyping our main event for this evening, as they go around the table talking about how they have been waiting to see who goes up in the series of matches that span back to Fall Brawl 2000. Tony, Gene, and Stevie favor Goldberg winning and continuing his new Streak, while Chris and Jeremy feel that Steiner has too much to prove, and think that he will win it by hook or by crook to get rid of Goldberg once and for all. The only way to find out is to order the show now! (C-)</p><p> </p><p> Backstage, we see footage of none other than “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair arriving in a decked out, fancy stretch limousine! Booker tells him that he may have snuck up behind him on Nitro, but tonight it’ll be man to man, face to face! But Storm makes a promise that when Thunder goes off the air, the only thing anyone will remember is Lance Storm standing tall.</p><p> Later that night… </p><p> Booker hits the axe kick and starts to Spinarooni back to his feet, but it’s obvious his shoulder is damaged. Undeterred, Booker goes for the Book End, but Storm is able to take Booker down into an armbar, and Storm mounts Booker’s back while applying pressure! Booker repeatedly tries to get to the ropes, but Storm is able to keep him at bay – finally the damage already done to the arm is too much, and Booker T is forced to tap out! No one in the audience likes it, but at 17:46, Lance Storm’s promise comes true as he is the last thing being talked about on the finale of WCW Thunder!</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">March 26, 2001: WCW Monday Nitro</span></p><p> It looks as though The World are en route to a successful title defense, when someone else hits the ring – Booker T! As Jindrak and Stasiak brawling outside the ring has Mark Johnson’s attention elsewhere, Booker hits Storm with a big scissors kick, breaking the hold and leaving Storm prone on the mat! O’Haire heads to the top rope, tagging Jindrak along the way, and he drops the Seanton Bomb! Sean then superkicks Stasiak off the apron as Jindrak makes the cover, and after a three count we have brand new World Tag Team champions at 6:05! </p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">April 13, 2001: WCW The Big Bang</span></p><p> Booker and Storm are left alone finally, and Booker looks to get the Book End – but no, Storm ducks out of it and turns it into the armbar submission he used to defeat Booker during their match on the last Thunder! It’s hooked right in the middle of the ring, and Storm puts all his weight onto Booker to hold him there! Booker has no way to escape – and the pain is unbearable! He has no choice, Lance Storm has made Booker T tap out again!</p><p> But there’s no bell – Scott James is distracted by the brawl outside of the ring! </p><p> After the bout… </p><p> Storm cinches in his arm lock on Booker again. WCW security led by Doug Dillinger rush the ring, trying to separate this brutal attack before anything career threatening happens. They are finally able to pull Storm off of Booker, who is howling in pain and holding his shoulder.</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">April 20, 2001: WCW Friday Nitro</span></p><p> Lance Storm along with Major Gunns comes out to the ring now. No more Canadian National Anthem, no more ‘Canada is better than America,’ no more Canadian Hero – you’ll never talk down to Americans again just because you’re from Canada!”</em> (C+)</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Back to The WCW Panel we go, where they talk about the Pride match. Stevie Ray, of course, has full support behind his brother, saying that they didn’t fight and scratch their way to ten Tag Team title reigns just for some maple leaf fruit booty sucka to come along and take them all away! Chris Lovey talks about how the steel cage will make a big difference, as neither The World nor the Natural Born Thrillers can get involved, and the submission only nature of the bout means it won’t be any sort of fluke victory on either side. He, Tony, and Gene agree that Booker T has a lot to prove after tapping out twice to Storm now, and will come out the winner. It’s Jeremy who is on his own here, feeling that Lance is too hungry for victory and too talented at submission wrestling to lose here. (D+) </p><p> </p><p> We stay with The WCW Panel as they turn their attention to Rick Steiner and Sting, saying that this match came about by Scott Steiner constantly berating Sting ever since putting him out of action in November of 2000. But now, “The Stinger” is back, and he is looking for blood; but “The Dog-Faced Gremlin” is no pushover, so this could become one of the more hard-hitting, brutal matches of the evening. Tony, Gene, and Jeremy all back Sting to come out on top, while Stevie Ray and Chris aren’t sure if Sting is back to form yet, while Steiner has been wrestling nearly every week since January. Stevie says that if Sting came back too soon or isn’t in tip-top shape, then he’ll go down like a common Harlem hoodrat. (C-)</p><p> </p><p> Scott Hudson is backstage (in a segment marked as being recorded during the previous Panel segment) alongside Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Tully Blanchard. Scott says that he can’t wait to start the show tonight, asking for “The Nature Boss” to give some thoughts on it. Flair says that he definitely looks forward to seeing who comes out on top in the Indian Strap and Pride matches, saying that despite the iron-clad contract forcing Goldberg to keep winning matches until he can get a title match, if Goldberg defeats Steiner tonight it’ll really force the hand of he and Eric to see what they can do about it. Hudson tells Anderson that he will see him out there in about a half an hour, helping Mike Tenay call the action! Flair says that if anyone does anything out of line, the three of them will be watching, and we will see who bleeds, sweats, and pays the price to get the big victories! (C+)</p><p> </p><p> Mike Awesome and Elix Skipper defeat AJ Styles and Shane Helms in 5:54, Awesome pinning Styles after Shawn Stasiak interrupted a high risk maneuver that led to the Awesome Bomb. (C+)</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="43111" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><div style="text-align:center;"><p>A video history between Totally Buff and “Big Sexy” Kevin Nash</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">March 26, 2001: WCW Monday Nitro</span></p><p> Nash goes for the Jackknife, but Steiner blocks it with a series of punches. Shockingly, “Big Poppa Pump” turns the Jackknife Powerbomb into the Frankensteiner! Scott rolls Nash over and gets the pinfall, surprising everyone with a clean title defense at 17:16.</p><p> </p><p> <span style="text-decoration:underline;">April 13, 2001: WCW The Big Bang</span></p><p> “It’s time for the ‘Big Bad Wolf’!” screams Scott Hudson as “Big Sexy” Kevin Nash begins sauntering out to the ring. Commentary speculate what Nash has to say tonight, with Arn wondering if Nash knows where to go with his career after losing his title shot on the last TNT Nitro. Nash slaps a few hands on the way down, and as he starts climbing the stairs, a photographer takes a picture – and the flash bulb explodes, blinding Kevin! He staggers off the steps, and out from under the ring… “The Total Package” and Buff Bagwell attack Nash viciously, as Tenay gets a closer look and sees that the “photographer” was Madusa dressed as one of the press members who are around the ring! Really liked this concept of the pre-show hype. Definitely a good use of that hour. I hadn't ever really thought about it that way, especially since it keeps guys "on the show"

Thanks guys, I'm glad to see it getting a positive reaction :D I mean, it really is good to have a way to hype you all back up a little, given how long I take between shows... :o

Wow, man, you really trolled me with this update. I was wondering why you didn't put the NBTs vs. the Harris Bros. on the prediction card! But seriously, I think this is a fun and unique idea to help recap some of your top angles. I'm all for keeping it.

No troll intended, I always planned on posting this a few days before Pride was to be posted. The reason the Thrillers vs. Harris match, along with the other two, weren't listed on the prediction card was solely because I wasn't planning on having them as part of the main show. Had I put them on the card to begin with, then someone who came in now (such as Texasrangers) wouldn't have been able to predict on it, and that wouldn't have been very fair! Not that I'm expecting many more predictions, you guys have been very good to me with how long I make you wait for new content. It is very much appreciated, and hey, the day I decide to close this game down, I will say so. So leave that wonder out of your minds, because unless I come in this thread and say "Okay guys, we're done" or I start up a new diary (which I've no real plans of) then this one is my focal game.

Bonus Question: What person who we haven’t seen in some time in WCW will join the WCW Panel for the evening? ---- I think I was too late for this, and frankly I don't have a pick

No, the special guest doesn't join them until during Pride, so feel free to edit someone's name in.

World Championship Wrestling presents WCW Pride

Our opening video for the show is narrated by the voice of Vampiro: “Of all the deadly sins, perhaps the worst of them all is pride. Pride is the father of all sins, the devil’s most prominent trait. It’s pride that drives men to feel bigger and better than they really are, pride that makes them feel like higher beings than all those around them. Pride makes you fight for only yourself, to put your foot down on all others to climb above them. Selfishness leads men to the highest of highs… but also, the lowest of lows. Remember; pride goeth before a fall.”

During the video, images were shown of Goldberg and Scott Steiner, Totally Buff, Kevin Nash, Booker T, and The World, while occasionally cutting back to Vampiro in a dark room. The final line is delivered while looking at Vampiro, who blows out a candle to lead into the WCW Pride logo. (B-)

“The Prodigal Son” Dustin Rhodes vs. C.W.

Announced Time Limit: 30:00

Official: Mark Johnson

Ringside: Simon Diamond and Disqo (C.W.)

This is a good little opening match that warms the crowd up for action to come, while not overwhelming the home audience while Tenay, Hudson, and “Double A” discuss the matches that have more hype than this one. C.W. shows an improved performance as he hammers the veteran Rhodes to the mat, getting a few very close near falls after a delayed vertical suplex and his Ferris Wheel Suplex (half nelson exploder suplex). Dustin makes his comeback, hitting a bulldog on C.W., but before he can make a pin, Simon rushes the ring and attacks him, blatantly drawing a disqualification.

Disqo joins in as well when Simon says to do so, and the Problem Solvers lay heavy stomps into Dustin. The three of them do a number on him, with Simon telling Disqo and C.W. to hold him up – but Rhodes gets away from them, and he starts hitting Bionic Elbows on all three men! “The Prodigal Son” is back on his feet, and he shoves Simon and C.W. into one another to send them out of the ring before getting Disqo into the corner. He starts setting him up for the Shattered Dreams field goal kick, but the self help guru and his enforcer are able to release him before his Disqo balls get shattered. Dustin celebrates with the crowd as Simon, Disqo, and C.W. flee the ringside.

Match Time: 6:05

Notes: Tenay and Hudson showed good chemistry on commentary, their announcing lifting the match. These two got the show off to a strong start.

“Mean” Gene Okerlund and Jeremy Borash are back in the interview area, welcoming everyone in their own way to WCW Pride. Gene says that he has a special guest with him tonight, that guest walking in being Sid Vicious! Okerlund asks him what he is doing here tonight, with Sid saying that he’s here to watch what happens in the main event. He tells Goldberg to make sure not to hurt Steiner so badly that he has to vacate the title, because Sid is coming for Steiner and the World title very soon!

Notes: Gene and Jeremy play off one another so well.

Kid Kash vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.

Announced Time Limit: 30:00

Official: Billy Silverman

Ringside: None

One of WCW’s newest signings debuts here, as Kid Kash comes to us with big fanfare and the Kid Rock song from the WCW Mayhem album, “Shotgun”. Tenay does a great job talking him up, and Kash lives up to the hype by putting Chavo on the run for much of the bout. Both men have spent over a decade in the sport, but it appears that Guerrero’s years in the big spotlight of WCW as opposed to the smaller leagues elsewhere have left him with the wherewithal to bide his time. He also seems to have upped his performance game while preparing for this match. In the end, Kash may have the fan support after a big no-touch-over-the-top-rope plancha, but what it took out of him when the two re-enter the ring ends up leaving him open for Chavo to roll him up, placing his feet on the middle ropes to score a surprising three count!

Match Time: 6:39

Notes: Kash’s new gimmick came off as average; passable is fine as long as it didn’t fail. The two showed great chemistry against one another, and the announcing helped the match tremendously.

We go backstage and earlier tonight, where cameras caught The Steiner Brothers entering the building. Scott, noticing the camera, begins yelling at it, saying that he has arrived, so “Green-berg can start crapping his panties right about now, because ‘The Big Bad Booty Daddy’ is here to make him and any other Reno whores into his lil’ bitches!” While Scott stops to breathe, Rick adds that he’s gonna wipe that white paint off Sting’s face and replace it with his boot print. Scott then adds that “The Genetic Freak is in town, and I’ma show that bald headed bastard what my freaks already know – that size does matter, and the largest arms in the world and The Big Dipper are both gonna get some horizontal action tonight in Reno!”

Notes: Scott really enjoyed being unscripted, as he generally tends to do, even if the segment was a bit short and rushed as we moved him along.

Rating: B

In live action, we see Goldberg’s dressing room door. Security are standing in front of it and we hear him slamming lockers and in general banging around as he prepares himself for his match tonight.

Notes: This was short too, fans would have rather seen Goldberg instead of just hearing him.

We go to Mike, Scott, and Arn, who are talking about the match coming up next between “The Cat” Ernest Miller against Kanyon. But Mike says that he is getting word from the back that something is going on. Cameras are sent into action, and we find that a huge pull-apart brawl is going on between members of The World in Elix Skipper, Mike Awesome, and Shawn Stasiak, and the three Natural Born Thrillers! As the fight intensifies, “The Nature Boss” Ric Flair steps in, and he says that since their matches are all done anyways, he orders security to throw all six men out of the building! Separately, so that they don’t just keep fighting outside. Tenay says that it looks like their own problems have caused Lance Storm and Booker T to not have any backup or support during the Pride match later tonight!

Notes: Elix looked completely out of place among all the huge musclemen throwing haymakers, but O’Haire came across very well. Flair was a real star, taking charge of the whole situation.

“The Cat” Ernest Miller vs. Kanyon

Announced Time Limit: 30:00

Official: Scott James

Ringside: None

This wasn’t a comedy bout like it tends to generally be with Miller, as this one is all business after Kanyon put out Ms. Jones. Kanyon plays a lot of keep-away, constantly pointing at his head as if he’s smart for doing so. “The Cat” catches him though, delivering a barrage of effective kicks. Kanyon takes back over with a russian legsweep, but isn’t able to get anything more than a near fall using several of his signature maneuvers. He definitely seems to be showing that he can run his own match better. Ernest Miller fights back, “Full of his own pride and fighting for Ms. Jones” says Mike Tenay, but when he goes for the Feliner kick, Kanyon ducks and it hits Scott James! The match spills outside the ring then, fighting up the aisle. Things turn strange when we get to the top of the entrance way, though…

<iframe width="320" height="200" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jxlGtcW1Qg8?rel=0&showinfo=0" frameborder="0" gesture="media" allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Red lights flash over the competitors as strange, slow music plays. The lights suddenly turn out for a few moments, and when they come back on, the music has stopped, Kanyon is back in the ring – and Ernest Miller is covered in blood! “It’s a bloodbath out there,” shouts Scott Hudson, as “The Cat” is completely disoriented, making his way back to the ring even in his confused state. He walks right into the Flatliner, as Arn wonders what was in that liquid that made Miller so goofy. Tenay says that he hasn’t been so confused since he saw the trailer for Freddy Got Fingered; that movie just came out two days ago, WCW are hip, kids! Scott James seems confused, but he does his job and counts the 1-2-3 to give the bout to Kanyon.

The segment doesn’t close yet, as that strange music starts playing again. In the darkness of the red, flashing lights, Kanyon meets up with Daffney at the top of the aisle, with Vampiro standing above them! The music plays as Vampiro says that “Pride goeth before a fall… the sinners are everywhere, but we are the chosen who will lead them to the promised land.” Kanyon takes the microphone from him, saying that he used to be full of pride, always asking who is better than Kanyon. But he needs not ask questions anymore, because he is full of his own self-worth, thanks to Vampiro! Vampiro tells everyone that Kanyon has left behind his pride, his ego, just as Vampiro did. They have bonded together, along with Daffney, to cleanse WCW of its sins, and they will lead them all, all the sheep who are simply lambs to the slaughter, they will take all the sheep and all the sinners, and bring them into their promised land; “for salvation lies within our Dark Eden.” The lights go out, and the music stops when the lights come back on, but Kanyon, Vampiro, and Daffney are all gone.

Match Time: 8:50

Notes: The announcing lifted the match up. During the promo segment, Vampiro worked the crowd really well, his off-script freedom was utilized to his great advantage, and Kanyon also improvised quite well.

After shuddering about what we just saw, “Mean” Gene and Jeremy welcome their next guest to the interview area, none other than Booker T! Asking him about the Pride match later tonight, Booker tells them that he isn’t afraid for his achievements tonight, because just like when he won all those things, he is going to fight to his last breath. He tells Lance that when he strips him of all the Maple Leaf BS he’s been spouting for years, not to go hating the player; just hate the game.

Mike, Scott, and Arn throw us to a slightly abridged version of the recap video that we saw during the pre-show that led us to this match between Kevin Nash and Lex Luger.

“Big Sexy” Kevin Nash vs. “The Total Package” Lex Luger

Announced Time Limit: 30:00

Official: Nick Patrick

Ringside: Buff Bagwell, Madusa (Lex Luger)

All of Totally Buff are out, with Buff and Madusa remaining at ringside. The two of them get involved at any opportunity, stunting what Nash can do in the bout. But all in all, this is mostly just a match featuring two guys hitting their signature moves to get relative pops and jeers from the audience, depending upon who is hitting what. In the end, “Big Sexy” starts to hit his five moves of doom, pulling the straps down and setting up for the Jackknife. But Madusa grabs the attention of Nick Patrick, which allows Buff a chance to climb up the turnbuckle and hit the Buff Blockbuster on Nash! Buff helps Luger to lift Nash into the Torture Rack before leaving the ring, and Patrick can only call what he sees – which is an unconscious Kevin Nash in the submission hold. When Kevin is unresponsive, he calls for the bell, awarding the bout to Luger.

Madusa shoves Nick Patrick aside when he tries to tell Lex to put him down, when Bagwell enters the ring with a microphone. Buff tells Nash to just “Go home and stay there, while you can still walk there!” Bagwell touts Totally Buff, saying that Nash may have at one time been a new generation, but now he and Luger are leading “the Totally Buff generation!” Luger finally throws Nash aside, getting the microphone to scream at Nash that at one time, Nash was doing all the two and three and four man attacks, but that’s all dead now; Kevin has no friends left to attack anyone for him, he’s on his own and doesn’t have a good leg to stand on! “Leave WCW to Totally Buff – we’ll take it further than you ever could!” They finally leave the ring, allowing trainers and medical personnel to come help Nash up and out of the ring.

Match Time: 8:29

Notes: There wasn’t much selling in the match, but the star power alone got the crowd hotter. Madusa did some good work at ringside, and the announcing helped it come off better. The post-match also ignited the crowd, even though the color commentary was left lacking.

We see “Mean” Gene Okerlund shake his head in disbelief over what just happened as we cut to the WCW Panel! But mostly just Gene and Jeremy right now, as they throw it to a pre-recorded interview that they had with Lance Storm. Okerlund is asking Storm about the Pride match coming up later, with Storm telling him that he is going to be even more than just serious – he’ll be deadly serious when he steps into the steel cage against Booker T. Major Gunns bounces in joy behind Storm’s shoulder as he lists off Booker’s WCW career achievements; his ten World Tag Team title reigns, six World Television title reigns, three World Heavyweight championship reigns. Lance says that Booker needs to kiss those goodbye, because when he causes Booker to scream in pain that he submits tonight, which he’s caused him to do twice already in the past month, he won’t even be a player in his own game, because all of those will belong to Lance Storm and The World! “Don’t blame the player; don’t blame the game; don’t blame Canada, just blame yourself!”

Notes: Gene and Jeremy played off one another well, with Gunns helping Lance during this interview.

Rating: C

It’s halftime of the show, which means it is time for the WCW Panel to join us to talk about what we’ve seen so far this evening and what is to come. Tony, Chris, Gene, Jeremy, and Stevie are joined by Stacy Kiebler, who says that she has been absent from WCW because she has been watching and waiting for someone worthy of her managerial services. Stevie seems to have some more charisma as he talks about how he can’t wait for the Pride match, because it’s time to see Booker T “shut the slap-yap of that fruit booty bitch” Lance Storm. Tony says that the Pride match is all about the legacy of Booker T against the persona of Lance Storm, and their careers and perhaps even WCW may never be the same once the bout is over. They also talk about the Indian Strap match, with Jeremy and Chris both agreeing that they are so excited that their first few pay-per-view events with WCW have featured such huge main events. After talking briefly about what we’ve seen so far with Kid Kash surprisingly coming up short in his WCW debut and the attack on Kevin Nash, Schiavone sends us to a special look at an incoming new superstar to World Championship Wresting!

Notes: Tony and Jeremy performed poorly and Chris didn’t really come out of it looking very good.

Rating: C-

It’s another video featuring the man called Low-Ki, this time less about seeing him in the ring and more about his training regimen. It shows him decimating a heavy bag with his high impact kicks, and then some footage of him talking about how he may not be the biggest dog in the fight, but it’s more about the size of the fight in the dog. He is bringing his fight to WCW!

Notes: Low-Ki’s new gimmick is shown off as a legitimate style Bad Ass, which comes off as average. But by the end of the segment, fans already feel like he’s better at it.

Sting vs. “The Dog-Faced Gremlin” Rick Steiner

Announced Time Limit: 30:00

Official: Charles Robinson

Ringside: None

Honestly, you’ve seen this match before. If you know how Rick Steiner wrestled in 2001 (repetitively, rarely selling, with somewhat dull brawling that the announcers treat as “hard hitting” or “methodical”) and you know how Sting wrestled in 2001 (mostly his big moves that pop the crowd, taking a beating in the middle of the match before coming back at the end) then you know how this match went pretty much note for note. Sting ends the bout by slipping out the back of an attempted Steiner Driver to hit the Scorpion Death Drop, getting the pinfall victory.

Sting takes some time to celebrate this win, slapping hands around the ring. He goes to the top of the aisle and starts making the “I want the belt” motion around his waist, showing that he wants the World championship again.

But what he gets isn’t Scott Steiner – it isn’t even Rick Steiner again, or even Midajah; he gets blindsided out of the curtain by Animal! The painted behemoth runs through a tired, weakened Sting, planting him on the concrete floor with a running powerslam! What has brought this attack on, and what is the state of “The Stinger” after it has been perpetrated?

Match Time: 13:51

Notes: I didn’t expect the crowd to be so hot before this match, so telling this match to lift the crowd fell flat. The angle after the match got the crowd very hot again, even though Arn’s color commentary didn’t come off well.

Pride Match

Booker T vs. Lance Storm

Announced Time Limit: No Time Limit

Official: Scott James

Ringside: Major Gunns (Lance Storm)

After the video and a brief intermission while the cage is set up, it is time for the Pride match! Mike, Scott, and Arn talk about the phrase that Tony coined earlier, that this is “Legacy vs. Persona” for these two athletes. Tenay likens Storm not being able to talk about Canada anymore to the soul searching that Mexican luchadores have to go through when they lose their mask, wondering if he would even be able to recover from such a huge blow to what he is so used to doing. They do add that as per the contract that was signed, Storm will be suspended from WCW if he talks about Canada being better than America after this match if he loses. Booker is in control at the beginning as soon as the bell sounds, roughing Storm up with some heavy body slams and a sidekick that has Lance reeling, trying to escape, but there’s nowhere he can go with the cage surrounding the ring! Lance uses his brain though, as he waits for a chance to dodge a leaping sidekick that puts Booker into the steel cage!

From there, Storm begins working over Booker, especially his left arm and shoulder – notably, the same arm that he caused Booker to tap out from on the final episode of Thunder. Mike Tenay does point out that this is different for Storm, as his usual offense is focused on setting up the Canadian Maple Leaf, but it shows how versatile Lance Storm really is. Booker may have a strong never-say-die attitude, but he gets tested very strongly here as Lance puts his arm through a meat grinder, applying submission after submission to it, going from short arm scissors to fujiwara armbar to a keylock. Each time, Booker refuses to give in, refuses to give up the career that he has worked so hard for! But it definitely doesn’t look good for him.

Lance does lock in the Maple Leaf, but it doesn’t cause a submission, as Storm had not set Booker up for it previously. What it does do, is help to slow Booker’s strong legs. However, Booker crawls over to the cage and actually starts crawling up the side of it, shoving Storm away – and he pulls himself up before hitting the Harlem sidekick! Booker drops to the mat and he hooks in a crossface, a hold that Mike says that he doesn’t think Booker has ever used before! Lance screams in pain, but he doesn’t give away his Canadian pride, refusing to give up as he rolls the hold over, and flips it into the armbar submission that he has used to make Booker tap out on two previous occasions! How much can Booker take?

The pain is excruciating, and Booker…

… starts to stand up! He only has one arm to use, but he gets up onto his knees, before rolling and throwing Storm across the ring!

The match ends up with Booker showing that he’s done some work on his aerial offense by flawlessly breaking out one of his old signature moves, the missile dropkick. The match moves airborne in other ways though, as Major Gunns finds a way to inject a steel chair into the match while Storm is standing on the ropes. Booker also stands up on the ropes, and the two men do battle above the ring, before Booker is able to take advantage and blasts Storm with the chair! He doesn’t fall to the mat, but he’s holding weakly onto the top of the cage. Lance is in a daze, and he tries to escape by going over the cage. But Booker follows him, and the two men throw punches at one another on top of the cage!

But Booker takes over again, and actually starts setting Lance up; he’s going to deliver the Book End! Is he going to throw him over the cage or into the ring?!

We never find out – Storm screams that he quits! The match is over!

Booker throws the limp Storm aside, letting him fall into the ring where Scott James is able to help give him a safe landing. Booker also goes back into the ring, but he stands on the top turnbuckles and starts celebrating this win! The fans cheer him on, as Booker has cemented his legacy tonight – and Lance Storm has lost Pride!

Match Time: 17:27

Notes: These two really got the crowd going here, with both of them showing great psychology for this spectacle. However they both struggled with living up to the slow build in their own ways, with Lance mostly using up his big repertoire of signature moves too early and Booker not performing to the level worthy of the build.

<hr></details>

“Mean” Gene Okerlund and Jeremy Borash are walking backstage, with Gene telling Jeremy to “Just stand behind me, kid. Me and Goldberg go way back, I’m the only guy who’s allowed to even call him ‘Bill’ anymore. If you say the wrong thing to him, he’ll tear your head off! So you just leave this to me and keep quiet. Make sure you’re taking notes.” They get to the locker room door of Goldberg, with the security beginning to stop them until Gene tells them that he’s here for some words from Goldberg. Jeremy (behind Gene, so he doesn’t see it) shows them a press badge, and they allow them through. Gene (telling Jeremy “See, that’s how it’s done”) knocks on the door, loudly calling for Goldberg to answer. The door cracks open, and the icy stare of Goldberg glares at them. Gene, jovially, turns to look at the cameraman and starts off his interview spiel; “I am ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund, and everyone, I am here for an exclusive interview with none other than ‘Da Man’ Goldberg! Goldberg, what can you tell us about your upcoming Indian Strap match against World champion Scott Steiner?” Goldberg glares at Gene, looking him up and down, before screaming “He’s next!” and slams the door, nearly taking the microphone right out of Gene’s hand! As they walk away, a flustered Gene says that this was “All your fault, Jeremy, you must have looked at him wrong! They ruined my damn interview!” Jeremy just shrugs at the cameraman as Gene blares on through the corridor.

Notes: This was kept brutally short, but what shone was the pairing of Okerlund and Borash.

WCW X Division Championship

Rey Mysterio Jr. © vs. “The Franchise” Shane Douglas

Announced Time Limit: 30:00

Official: Charles Robinson

Ringside: Tygress (Rey Mysterio Jr.)

Shane shows that he has learned from his match at the beginning of the month against Mysterio by stalling him out. It isn’t full-on Memphis heel territory, but he does slow the bout for a sparse few moments until Rey starts chasing him around the ring! But that is what Douglas was after, as he enters the ring and stomps the champion on his way in. The slow, methodical approach of “The Franchise” leads to plenty of potential comeback spots for the underdog Mysterio to utilize, as Shane looks to have been improving some of his in-ring performance before this match. The crowd are in stunned silence when one of Rey’s comebacks leads to a springboard that Shane actually turns into the Franchiser! But the force of the move sends Mysterio too close to the edge of the ring, and the time Shane has to take in order to pull him toward the center of the ring gives him the chance to get a shoulder up before the three count. Douglas tries to hook Mysterio up for the Pittsburgh Plunge, but Rey slips away before it can be hooked in, and he starts dazzling “The Franchise” with arm drags and spinning headscissors, before getting things in place and landing a springboard hurricanrana! There’s no flukey roll-up this time as Mysterio takes his time to hook the leg and Charles Robinson counts three to leave the new champion as the reigning champion on this night!

Match Time: 9:05

Notes: The match was kept a little short, but it achieved what it needed to in keeping the crowd buzzing.

The cameras follow the X-Division champion backstage, where right behind the curtain he meets up with Konnan and Billy Kidman. Tygress is pleased, asking when they go to the party, with Konnan telling her that they got one more pandejo to knock down and then it’s time to party hearty, chica! She turns to head out with Kidman, who, despite being all smiles and high fives for Rey, also jokes that when he’ll beat Jarrett quicker than Rey did to Shane. After that awkward moment passes, Konnan slaps Kidman’s shoulders and tells him to go bring home that gold, holmes!

Notes: Tygress’s ever present, bouncing personalities helped Rey and Kidman during this segment.

WCW United States Heavyweight Championship

Billy Kidman vs. “The Chosen One” Jeff Jarrett ©

Announced Time Limit: 45:00

Official: Scott James

Ringside: Tygress (Billy Kidman), The Harris Brothers (Jeff Jarrett)

Jeff Jarrett doesn’t seem very amused at being part of a friendly wager between the Filthy Animals, as he brings the Harris Boys with him to the ring. They stand guard at the aisle like two looming pillars of destruction, just waiting for a chance to earn their pay. Hudson makes a reference to Bridget Jones’s Diary (since that movie is the top at the box office right now, WCW really are hip to you kids!) when Kidman makes Jarrett slip off the apron, saying that the clumsy Bridget took less pratfalls. “Double A” is playing his best Bobby Heenan impression by constantly deriding Kidman for making promises about how fast he could win this match, by keeping a timer going. Billy does nearly win the bout on several occasions, but in the end Big Ron and Heavy D play a part, grabbing the attention of Scott James while Jarrett gets the Acoustic Equalizer and blasts Kidman with it! After shoving the evidence away, he lifts the limp body of Kidman up in order to make a big show out of giving him The Stroke, covering him to retain his title.

Kidman may not have won the bout, but he showed a great fire in the match and made Jeff look bad a few times, and that doesn’t suit well with “The Chosen One”. Jarrett calls in his men, and they stomp him into the mat! Heavy D whips Kidman into the big boot of Big Ron, and they drop the H-Bomb on him as it starts to look as though Jarrett wants to put Billy out of wrestling entirely!

But out of the back rushes Konnan and Mysterio! Once the odds are a little more even they are able to push back, sending the Harris Boys out of the ring with a clothesline from “K-Dawg” and a spinning headscissors by Mysterio. Jarrett bails out of the ring, leaving the Animals all behind as he takes his championship with him. They may have kept Kidman safe, but it’s after the fact for him to bring home the title.

Match Time: 10:23

Notes: This match succeeded at calming the crowd, who had been just red hot previously and were in danger of blowing the roof off if they didn’t get a breather. Tygress did some good ringside work here, even if the color commentary didn’t hold up it’s end; the timer bit just wasn’t very good. Arn is getting better, I promise!

An abridged version of the hype video that we saw during the live pre-show airs to hype our main event! It’s time to strap them up!

The ring introductions wait until both men are in the ring, much like how a boxing or puroresu title match does. David Penzer gives his best job at hyping up both men by running through all of their nicknames. “Big Poppa Pump” flexes and poses, constantly running his mouth during his intro, but Goldberg is the visage of intensity. He barely moves a muscle, staring daggers through his opponent as the leather strap is fastened to each man’s wrist. The bell sounds, all the talking is through as we are ready to go!

Indian Strap Match

“Da Man” Goldberg vs. “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner

Announced Time Limit: TV Time Remaining

Official: Nick Patrick

Ringside: Midajah (Scott Steiner)

The bell has barely sounded and Goldberg rushes forward and hits the Spear! Scott Steiner is down on the mat before he even had his bearings about him! Goldberg doesn’t get much further than that however, as Steiner rolls out of the ring. He tries to shake the cobwebs loose and starts leaving the arena – but he’s attached to Goldberg! “Da Man” starts pulling him back to the ring, and it’s a tug of war! Midajah enters the ring behind Goldberg and hits a low blow on him, and Steiner’s cocky smile returns immediately. He gets into the ring and starts beating on Goldberg with clubbing double axe handle smashes. He drops elbows on Goldberg’s back, doing all he can to make sure that Goldberg is unable to get on his own two feet. Once Goldberg finally looks like he’s down on the mat catching his breath, Steiner starts doing push-ups – but Hudson does point out that, unlike usual when Scott starts showboating like this, Steiner is keeping an eye on his opponent.

The no disqualifications and no count outs nature of this bout rears it’s ugly head as this match spills out of the ring. Much like the majority of WWF main event brawls from about three years ago, the match heads up the aisle as these guys just keep throwing clubbing punches at each other. The live crowd stay right with them rather than calling out how we’ve seen this before, as the two men involved here are definitely the top heel and face of World Championship Wrestling. The leather strap comes into play numerous times, with each man both giving and receiving some harsh slaps across the back with it. Scott shows that he has been training up his brawling for this match. Steiner takes over the match by moving out of the way of a Spear attempt, which sends Goldberg crashing into a stack of unused ring barricade pieces.

As the match comes back to the ring, Scott is growing cockier and mouthier as he slaps Goldberg’s head, before laying into his back with the leather strap. He finally gets tired of this, doing some push-ups right in Goldberg’s face as he taunts him relentlessly. “The Big Bad Booty Daddy” says that this is all over as he locks in the Steiner Recliner, using the strap around Goldberg’s throat to pull harder on the pressure. “Will this be all for Goldberg’s career?” questions Mike Tenay, as Steiner keeps screaming that “He’s done! It’s done! C’mon ref! It’s done!”

But is it?

Is it?!

No! Goldberg gets probably his third or fourth wind under him, and he starts getting to his feet, carrying Scott Steiner on his shoulders! He backs into the turnbuckle, breaking the hold, but Steiner recovers and turns Goldberg around with a spinning belly to belly suplex!

BUT GOLDBERG – IS – UP!

He is running completely on adrenaline as he grabs the leather strap and pulls Steiner off balance, and he hits him with the Spear! This time it has to be……

Time for The Jackhammer!

Goldberg goes for the cover!

1!

2!

3-NO!

Scott Steiner somehow kicks out! He escapes the Jackhammer! Goldberg looks frustrated, but not flustered. Commentary start debating on if anyone has ever kicked out of the Jackhammer in the past, this is almost inhuman between these two men! With plenty of struggle, he lifts Steiner off the mat, and he starts hooking him up – but Steiner turns the second Jackhammer attempt into a small package!

1!

2!

3!

NO! Goldberg just barely broke free! Scott starts harassing Nick Patrick, saying that had to have been three! He shoves Patrick around, but finally (after a few loud expletives that probably shouldn’t even have made it on pay-per-view) he admits to it having been only a two count.

AND TURNS AROUND INTO THE SPEAR!

This Spear puts the wind right out of Steiner’s sails, and this time when Goldberg peels Steiner off the mat and hoists him over his head, the Jackhammer succeeds again! If Steiner kicked out of one Jackhammer, surely he can’t get out of a second one?

1!

2!

3!

No kickout this time, this match is over!

Match Time: 19:59

Notes: David Penzer just looked tiny compared to the men he was introducing, but during the introduction, Steiner’s performance was good and Goldberg looked a real star. There was a bad lack of selling and psychology during the match. Scott was very suited to the brawl, and the crowd were made red hot due to the star power involved. Arn came off pretty weak on commentary.

<hr><details><summary>WCW Live Post Show Coverage</summary>

The pay-per-view may have gone off the air officially, but we are back with the live coverage as Goldberg celebrates his big victory! Scott Steiner is being helped from the ring with Midajah at his heels, looking as concerned as her acting level will allow. (B+)

We go backstage to The WCW Panel, who talk about how exciting that main event was for all to witness! They talk over the replay of a few of the big moments from it, with all of them feeling like it was over during the Steiner Recliner and during the first Jackhammer. But the second Jackhammer closed the show with a huge moment, which Tony says will perhaps be looked upon as a moment that shook professional wrestling in years to come. ©

Elsewhere backstage, cameras catch up with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Tully Blanchard as they are heading out of the arena. They get some thoughts from the three men after the night of action we just saw, with Flair especially commending Goldberg and Booker T for rising above their enemies and being victorious. Arn jokes that it was the best action he’s called, before adding that he’s only called three shows in his life, and Tully laughs at Scott Steiner for losing such a big match. (B-)

The WCW Panel turn their attention to the Pride match, with Stevie Ray saying he told everyone that Book would take home the win. They question what impact this will have on Lance Storm in the future, now that he had to give up the match and his Canadian pride under threat of suspension from WCW. (D+)

Before the show closes completely, Tony gets word from the production staff that our main event is set for next Friday Nitro: Scott Steiner must get into the ring all over again and defend his World Heavyweight title against the man who was deemed the number one contender before WCW left TNT: Sid Vicious! After Steiner just went through such a huge, grueling match against Goldberg, are we going to be seeing a new champion this Friday? (C-)

My Christmas gift to all of you! I hope you enjoy the show, and later on this week (probably Tuesday, or maybe Wednesday) I will be posting the winner for both the Pride and the three events prediction contest with a backstage segment from Eric that talks about the week that WCW had leading up to and following the show. I kept this show a little short in my opinion, but that should just make it easier for you all to read through for this busy time of year. Also, let me know what you think of the versus screen being the button to look at the matches! I think it looks a little neat myself, but I may be biased because I thought of it :p Have a great holiday, everyone!
