<p>Sting - <em>I can't see this one being in doubt at all. The best Crowbar can hope for is that he gives Sting a DQ win rather than getting beaten decisively.</em></p><p>

Sean O'Haire - <em>Buff is down for a month, but does that month include SuperBrawl? O'Haire takes this one to sew up a title shot.</em></p><p>

Filthy Animals - <em>Odds against them be damned, the Animals reunion takes a big win.</em></p><p>

AJ Styles</p><p>

Lance Storm</p><p>

Bigelow and Sandman - <em>It feels so weird seeing Sandman in WCW, especially after what a lame duck run he had as Hak. But hey, it gives him a good paycheck to keep up the booze and smokes, so time to cane people!</em></p>

Week 1, February, 2002

Live from Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul, Minnesota

Attendance: 5.000 (sellout)

We are once again live with another exciting edition of WCW Monday Nitro, and tonight we kick things off with "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash making his way to the ring while the announcers speculate as to whether Nash was involved in getting Crowbar and Daffney to attack Sting last week during the main event, given Nash's appearance after the match. Once in the ring, Nash gets on the mic and states that "Big Sexy is in da house!" Nash says that a lot of people have been saying a lot of things about him this past week, saying that he was behind the attack on Sting. Nash says that if he wanted Sting taken out, he'd do it himself. And even if he didn't do it himself, he would damn sure get someone more capable than those two whackjobs to carry out the hit and you can trust him on that. Nash says that he delivered his message last week exactly the way he wanted, face to face, and that he'll finish what he started last week, at SuperBrawl. Nash is then interrupted as "Seek and Destroy" starts playing and... (A)

The WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Sting, makes his way out from the back and down to the ring to face Nash. "Trust you, Kev?" Sting asks. Sting says that there is only one person in the history of WCW who was less trustworthy than Kevin Nash, and that person isn't around anymore, brother! However, Sting says that he believes that Nash wasn't involved, but that doesn't mean he trusts him. Now, as for Nash's challenge for a match at SuperBrawl..."Challenge accepted!" As a staredown ensues in the ring between two of the biggest stars in the business, Tony Schiavone excitedly announces that it looks like Sting and Kevin Nash will go at it at SuperBrawl for the World Championship! (A*)

Following that huge opening segement, we swing by the announce table where Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Bobby Heenan are set to call the action as always. After briefly discussing what just went down in the ring, they turn their attention to what's to come later tonight, focusing mainly on two matches; "The Total Package" Lex Luger will go one on one with Sean O'Haire with a Tag Team Title shot on the line for O'Haire, and the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Sting, will be in action against the man who attacked him last week during the main event, Crowbar. Those two matches, and so much more, are still to come during tonight's broadcast, so Tony urges everyone to stick around because you do not want to miss a single second of the action here on Monday Nitro. (C+)

A four on three handicap match is our opening match of the night as Konnan, Rey Misterio Jr. and Billy Kidman face off against Mike Sanders, Mark Jindrak, Shawn Stasiak and Juventud Guerrera in a match that partially came about last week when Konnan challenged Sanders and Kidman challenged Juventud, which lead to Eric Bischoff booking this match. This is a solid match that sees the heels dominate by using their strength in numbers to their advantage, but the heroic babyfaces keep fighting back. It looks like they might even beat the odds and pick up the win when Rey Misterio Jr. hits the Springboard Hurricanrana on Mike Sanders, but then Jindrak, Stasiak and Juventud all hit the ring and attack. A wild brawl ensues involved all seven men, eventually leading to the referee calling for the bell, disqualifying the heels who entered the ring and attacked first.

Rey Misterio Jr., Konnan and Billy Kidman defeated Mike Sanders, Mark Jindrak, Shawn Stasiak and Juventud Guerrera at 11:58 by disqualification (C+)

The brawl continues after the match until a small army of referees hit the ring to force the two sides apart, but, as Mike Tenay notes, the issues between these two sides are far from settled.

"Mean" Gene Okerlund is backstage with Crowbar and Daffney, and Gene asks the question that everyone have been asking since last week; why did they attack Sting? An intense Crowbar says that they merely did as they were told, and when Gene questions him as to who told them to attack, Daffney replies that he made them promise not to tell, so they really can't say anything to Gene about it. Knowing nothing more than we did before the interview started, Gene sends us back to the ring as Crowbar and Daffney walk off. (D+)

Tag team action is up next as Bam Bam Bigelow and The Sandman face off against Johnny Swinger and Jason Jett. This is a short match that Bigelow and Sandman dominate from start to finish, and that finish comes about when Bigelow hits his Greetings From Asbury Park finisher on Jason Jett, which is more than enough to secure them the pinfall victory.

Bam Bam Bigelow and the Sandman defeated Jason Jett and Johnny Swinger at 3:09 by pinfall when Bigelow pinned Jett following a Greetings From Asbury Park (D+)

After the match, we cut to the back where "The Cat" is complaining, rather loudly, to Miss Jones about Crowbar and Daffney, claiming that they cost him his World Title opportunity by getting involved in the match last week. "The Cat" says that tonight was supposed to be a celebration for him and instead he's left holding the bag. "The Cat" says that Crowbar is lucky he's already booked in a match against Sting tonight because otherwise he would challenge him to a match right now and he would make what Sting is going to do to him tonight look like a day in the park by comparison! "The Cat" then walks off down the hallway in a huff, clearly not a happy camper. (D+)

Elsewhere in the back, Stacy Keibler is in Eric Bischoff's office along with her clients, Chris Kanyon and Mike Awesome, and Stacy wants to know why her guys haven't received a Tag Team Title opportunity yet, given that they are clearly the best tag team in WCW right now. Bischoff explains that everyone wants a shot at the big time, but it's not that simple. Bischoff also says that he would argue that Lex Luger and Buff Bagwell are the best are the best tag team in WCW, given the fact that they are the champions. Stacy seems to disagree with Bischoff's opinion, but Bischoff assures all three of them that he's got his eyes on them and if they keep impressing him, good things will happen for them in the future. The trio do not look altogether pleased with Bischoff's response, but Bischoff ushers them out of his office, saying that he's got a lot of things to take care of tonight. ©

Eric Bischoff's Star of the Future is in action next as Lance Storm goes one on one with Hugh Morrus. Storm has been on a roll these last few months and he is looking to keep that going here tonight, though Hugh Morrus isn't going to make it easy for him, which Mike Tenay points out by saying that Hugh Morrus is probably one of the toughest men in the locker room. But Lance Storm is Eric Bischoff's pick for Star of the Future for a reason, and he proves that again here tonight as he overcomes the challenge of Hugh Morrus, putting him away by forcing him to submit to the Canadian Maple Leaf, picking up another win in what was a good match.

"Mean" Gene Okerlund is backstage with the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Chavo Guerrero, and he asks Chavo about the number one contender's match coming up later tonight, where the winner of the match will go on to SuperBrawl to face Chavo for the title. Chavo says that it doesn't even matter who wins tonight because whoever it is, they'll lose to him at SuperBrawl because he is the greatest cruiserweight wrestler in the world today--and he's got the gold to prove it. Gene asks if Chavo really doens't have a favorite in the match, or perhaps someone he would rather not have to face, but Chavo simply asks Gene what he just said, then adds that no cruiserweight in the world today can defeat Chavo Guerrero. (D)

Sean O'Haire makes his way to the ring for his high-stakes singles match against "The Total Package" Lex Luger, with Chuck Palumbo accompanying him, while the announcers repeat the stipulation that if O'Haire wins, he and Palumbo will get their Tag Team Title rematch at SuperBrawl against Luger and a replacement partner for the injured Buff Bagwell, but if Luger wins, O'Haire and Palumbo forfeit their rematch altogether. Before Luger comes out, we are first joined by...

sSiM1MW.jpg

The owner of WCW, Eric Bischoff, who stands at the top of the entrance ramp. Bischoff says that since Chuck Palumbo isn't competing tonight, he has no business being at ringside and that, in the interest of fairness and a level playingfield, he's going to have to ask Palumbo to head to the back. Bischoff somehow manages to say all of this with a mostly straight face, despite the fact that his Chosen Ones have been bending and breaking the rules for months without him doing anything about it. Palumbo has no choice but to do so, albeit reluctantly, and while O'Haire's back is turned as he focuses on Bischoff...

epiwJ9r.jpg

Lex Luger suddenly attacks from behind to get the match underway, having apparently snuck through the crowd to get to the ring. (B)

epiwJ9r.jpgvs.rxMZSbm.jpg

Luger stays on the offensive, trying to take as much advantage as possibly of his sneak attack. After a swift beatdown, Luger tries to Rack O'Haire, but O'Haire slips out the back and nails Luger with a superkick. From here the match goes back and forth, with O'Haire using his speed and raw athleticism to cause all sorts of problems for Luger, who in turn uses his experience advantage, and his willingness to break the rules, to turn things back in his favor. Luger goes for the Torture Rack for a second time but O'Haire avoids it, bounces himself off the ropes and hits a spinning heel kick. Feeling the momentum on his side, O'Haire goes to pull Luger to his feet, but Luger catches him by surprise with a low blow, taking care to use his own body to obscure the referee's view. Luger rolls O'Haire up and almost steals a win, but O'Haire just barely manages to kick out. A frustrated Luger argues with the referee, which ends up costing him big time as he turns around and walks right into a superkick. O'Haire then quickly makes his way to the top rope and follows the superkick up with a SeanTon Bomb! O'Haire covers, the referee makes the three count and O'Haire and Palumbo got a Tag Team Title rematch coming up at SuperBrawl as O'Haire picks up a huge victory against "The Total Package" here on Nitro!

Sean O'Haire defeated Lex Luger at 8:38 by pinfall with a SeanTon Bomb (B-)

YiAV5xv.jpg

Following Sean O'Haire's huge win, we cut to the back to see footage of Kevin Nash leaving the building while the announcers talk about the fact that they have just been told that Eric Bischoff has officially signed the match between Sting and Kevin Nash for the World Heavyweight Championship at SuperBrawl. As we see Nash getting into his car and driving off, the announcers hype up that huge World Title match a bit more before they send us back to the ring for some cruiserweight action. (B-)

WCW Cruiserweight Championship Number One Contender's Elimination Match

Fast-paced action is the order of the day in this one as AJ Styles, Elix Skipper, Shane Helms and Shannon Moore compete for the chances to face Chavo Guerrero at SuperBrawl for the Cruiserweight Championship. The action is all over the ring in this one as all four men are in the ring at the same time. The first elimination comes at the four minute mark when Shannon Moore hits the Halo on Elix Skipper, which is enough for a three count. Down to a three way dance, the second elimination comes about a minute later as Moore hits another Halo, this time on AJ Styles, and scores his second elimination in the match. It's down to two former members of 3-Count, and "Sugar" Shane Helms and Shannon Moore go back and forth until Moore tries for the hattrick by hitting a Halo on Helms as well, but Helms is able to avoid it and he quickly follows up by hitting the Vertebreaker on Moore. Helms cover, gets the three count and it's "Sugar" Shane versus Chavo Guerrero at SuperBrawl!

Shane Helms defeated Shannon Moore, AJ Styles and Elix Skipper at 10:09 when Helms pinned Moore following a Vertebreaker to be the last man remaining. Shane Helms earns a shot at the WCW Cruiserweight Championship ©

Booker T makes his way down to the ring as the announcers talk about the long-standing issues between Booker T and the Steiner Brothers, especially Scott Steiner, and how those issues continued last week with the Steiner Brothers's attack on Booker. Once in the ring, Booker cuts a promo on the Steiner Brothers, saying that after what they did last week, and then hearing Scott's words later...Booker says that Scott called him a victim, but Booker T ain't nobody's victim and Booker wants Scott Steiner to come out here and face him RIGHT NOW! The crowd is firmly behind Booker here, and a few moments later the familiar sirens start blasting throughout the arena, bringing.... (B+)

aiJ3oYx.jpge0KbmYl.jpgijZDMft.jpg

"Big Poppa Pump" out from the back, alongside Rick Steiner and Midajah. Standing at the top of the entrance ramp, Scott's got a mic of his own and he says that Booker is even dumber than he looks if he's actually calling out "The Genetic Freak" after the beating him and his brother gave Booker last week. Scott says that he won't rest until he's the World Champion again, even if it means putting the entire roster on the shelf--starting right now with Booker T! As Scott throws the mic down and the Steiner Brothers approach the ring, the announcers question the decision Booker T made coming out here and challenging them, but just then...

xeqPtl1.jpg

Dustin Rhodes makes his way through the crowd and he joins Booker in the ring as, apparently, Booker came out here tonight with some backup ready! With the odds even, the Steiner Brothers halt their approach on the ring and, after discussing it, they retreat back up the ramp, with Scott yelling obscenities at both Booker and Dustin as they do so. (B)

It is main event time and in the main event the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Sting, faces off against Crowbar in a non-title match. The announcers spend most of the match talking about Crowbar and Daffney's attack on Sting last week and wondering who put them up to it and about who it is who seemingly has it in for Sting. The match itself is good, with Sting controlling the majority of it, but Crowbar does get a few shots in here or there. At one point Daffney gets involved as he gets up on the apron and literally screams directly into Sting's face. In the end, Crowbar is outmatched here and Sting picks up the pinfall victory after hitting the Scorpion Deathdrop, getting a measure of redemption for the attack last week.

Sting defeated Crowbar at 5:38 by pinfall with the Scorpion Deathdrop (B-)

The match is over and Sting is victorious, but instead of "Seek and Destroy" playing, another, unfamiliar, music plays instead as the lights in the arena dim and a single-word message appears on the big screen......

"SOON"

And with Sting staring at the mysterious message on the screen, Monday Nitro comes to an end. (A)

Good Nitro, I like the games being played by everyone as they muscle toward their goals.

Nash/Steiners/Jarrett/Luger - A big match like this is a good place to see the heels pick up a victory. I'm thinking Nash pins Dustin.

DDP - Nice to see him get a challenger, but in 2001, Duggan is definitely a softball being lofted his way. Softball might even be too much; maybe a teeball?

Lance Storm - Storm is just (rightly) on a different plane than Animal is right now.

Mark Jindrak - A solid win to help ease him up from the Nash incident?

This is a solid match that sees a lot of interference from Sanders and Stasiak, while Konnan does his best to neutralize them but he does find himself outnumbered. <p>Kevin Nash - <em>Sting's "secret admirer" storyline is starting up, and that can cost him the title here without making him look weak.</em></p><p>

Steiner Brothers - <em>Both Rick and Dustin come off as the "weak link" of the teams, but I feel like Dustin is just a little bit below par.</em></p><p>

Palumbo and O'Haire - <em>The teammate change costs them the titles as Lex and Jarrett can't gel together.</em></p><p>

Rey, Konnan, BG - <em>3 Live Kru remaster?</em></p><p>

Shane Helms - <em>A big title win will put Helms on the map and make for a great opener.</em></p><p>

Kanyon and Awesome</p><p>

The Cat - <em>By DQ as he goads Sandman into using the cane.</em></p><p>

Juventud - <em>Billy already will come out of it looking strong by fighting under possible injury, so losing the match will be fine.</em></p><p> </p><p>

MOTN: Sting/Nash</p><p>

Titles: 2</p><p>

Opener: Helms vs. Chavo</p><p>

Messages: Vampiro is a good nod for someone trying to play mind games with Sting</p>

WCW World Heavyweight Championship

Sting © vs. "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash

Comment: Very in-between on this decision. But, 1) Sting is better on the chase, and 2) there seems to be enough babyfaces to send in Nash's direction. Not sure, but I'm thinking Sting's stalker is either Vampiro or Raven

WCW Tag Team Championships

"The Total Package" Lex Luger and "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett vs. Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo

Comment: Unless there's a face turn coming for Luger, I think you should protect Jeff Jarrett here.

Mike Sanders, Mark Jindrak and Shawn Stasiak vs. Rey Misterio Jr., Konnan and BG James

Comment: 3 Live Kru Get Rowdy

WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Chavo Guerrero © vs. "Sugar" Shane Helms

Comment: Are we going to get a year long Chavo reign again?

KroniK vs. Chris Kanyon and Mike Awesome

Comment: Unless their behavior has been less than stellar, there's more potential on the heel side.

"The Cat" Ernest Miller vs. The Sandman

Comment: Maybe Disco helps?

Billy Kidman vs. Juventud Guerrera

Comment: By DQ. This carries over to next month.
