Comment: I've been going back and forth on this one. I know Nash is the much bigger star, but something keeps telling me Rey is gonna pick up the win. Let's roll the dice!

WCW Cruiserweight Championship

On a night where every single WCW Championship is defended, it seems only right to kick things off with a title match as "Sugar" Shane Helms defends the Cruiserweight Championship against Chavo Guerrero Jr. Chavo comes down to the ring with the Championship belt wrapped around his waist but, as Tony Schiavone rightfully points out, it is Shane Helms who is the Champion--Chavo just stole the title from him a few weeks ago on Nitro. This is initially a fast-paced match, as one would expect from these two, but the pace slows down considerably as Chavo begins to stall for time, leaving the ring multiple times to regroup on the floor, much to Helms's growing frustration. This strategy eventually runs its course, however, and Helms finally gets his hands on Chavo. It is all Helms for a while, but a thumb to the eye allows Chavo to take control. Chavo is on offense for a while before hitting a pair of suplexes and then heads up to the top rope for a Frog Splash, but misses when Shane rolls out of the way. This move spells disaster for Chavo, and Helms hits the Vertebreaker soon after to pick up the three count and retain his Championship.

After the match, Shane Helms is reunited with the Cruiserweight Championship and he celebrates with the title in the ring.

As Shane celebrates in the ring, we cut back to "Mean" Gene who is standing by with Konnan and BG James. Gene asks them about their upcoming tag team match against Mike Awesome and Chris Kanyon, and Konnan is all fired up, saying that Mike Awesome should have finished the job when he had the chance at Greed, but he didn't and now there'll be hell to pay. BG James adds that tonight the 2 Live Kru of him and K-Dawg are going to teach Awesome and Kanyon a lesson in respect and ass-whupping! (D+)

That match is up next and it's a fight from the moment Konnan and BG James hit the ring as they immediately attack Awesome and Kanyon. The referee does eventually get control of things and the match gets under way with some solid back and forth action. Things do eventually break down again, however, and all four men are fighting in the ring. Chris Kanyon throws Konnan out of the ring, but turns around and gets clotheslined over the top rope himself by a charging BG James. James catches movement out of the corner of his eye and turns, ready to punch, but stops just short when he realizes that it's Stacy Keibler who has climbed onto the apron. This momentary distraction ends up costing him, however, as Mike Awesome blasts him from behind and then quickly follows up with an Awesome Bomb. Awesome covers and gets the three count, continuing his run of success lately.

Raven is somewhere in the back and he cuts a promo on behalf of Abyss, who stands menacingly behind Raven. Raven says that tonight he unleashes his monster and nobody, not even the so-called "hero" Sting, can stand in the way of Abyss. Raven says that he has formed and shaped Abyss's mind and because of that he knows that Abyss harbours just as much hatred for Sting as Raven does. Raven says that tonight Sting is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't because if he shows up and faces Abyss...he'll be destroyed. And if he doesn't show up, then he shows his true colors to the world. Raven tells Sting to pick his poison..."Quote the Raven...nevermore!" (B)

WCW United States Championship Nr.1 Contender's Match

A shot at the WCW United States Championship is on the line next as Lance Storm, "The Cat", Billy Kidman and Dustin Rhodes battle it out in a four way match. With all four men in the ring at the same time, this match is quite chaotic with a lot of action going on all over the place. At one point in the match "The Cat" tries to convince Lance Storm to team up, but Storm wants no part of an alliance with "The Cat" and he nails him with a superkick. All four men have their moments to shine in this one, and even Miss Jones and Torrie Wilson at ringside are close to going at it when Miss Jones antagonizes Torrie, forcing the referee to leave the ring to break up their argument. Due to the chaotic nature of this match and the events at ringside, another referee runs down to the ring to help out. The finish to this one comes around the 15 minute mark as Dustin Rhodes hits a running bulldog and covers "The Cat", but as he does so, Lance Storm applies the Canadian Maple Leaf submission hold on Kidman. As one referee's hand hits the mat for the three count on "The Cat", the other referee calls for the bell as Billy Kidman submits to Storm's Canadian Maple Leaf. (B-)

The bell rings and the match is over, but confusion reigns supreme as one referee is calling Dustin Rhodes the winner for pinning "The Cat", while the othe referee has Lance Storm as the winner for tapping out Billy Kidman. Both the referees and Storm and Rhodes argue back and forth about the outcome, but no final, official decision is made, leaving Tony, Mike and Bobby to wonder; who is the actual number one contender to the US Title??(C+)

As the confusion following the last match settles, we cut backstage to where "Mean" Gene is standing by with Rey Misterio Jr., who will be facing Kevin Nash for the WCW Wold Heavyweight Championship later tonight. Gene asks Rey about the match, and Rey calls it the biggest match of his career. Rey says that he knows he's facing an uphill battle. He knows he's got the odds against him tonight. Nash is bigger and stronger than he is...but Rey says that he is quicker than Nash, he's faster, he's younger and more athletic...and he'll fight with everything he's got because tonight is the biggest night of his career. Rey says that he's had the odds against him his entire life but that has never stopped him from trying, from dreaming...or from succeeding. Rey vows to leave it all in the ring because he wants to show the world, and himself, that dreams do come true. (C+)

WCW Tag Team Championships

Tag team action is up next as Totally Buff defends the WCW Tag Team Championships against The Mamalukes. This is a fairly standard tag team match with Totally Buff isolating Big Vito and wearing him down, with Vito making several attempts to fight back but Luger and Bagwell are always able to cut him off. Vito does finally make the hot tag to Johnny The Bull, who takes the fight to both of the Tag Team Champions. Luger and Bagwell eventually get the upper hand due to the two on one advantage, but Big Vito comes back in and the referee completely loses control. Luger throws Vito out of the ring and when the referee is busy trying to get Luger to leave the ring as well, "Buff Daddy" hits a low blow on Johnny The Bull behind the referee's back. Buff then hits a Blockbuster and the Champions retain their titles here at Clash of the Champions.

Totally Buff have retained their Tag Team Championships but they don't get much time to celebrate as Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo come running down the entrance ramp as Tony notes that we haven't been seen for weeks! O'Haire and Palumbo hit the ring and attack the Champions, eventually driving them from the ring. As O'Haire and Palumbo stand tall in the ring, the announcers talk about the fact that it looks like O'Haire and Palumbo aren't done with Totally Buff just yet, despite O'Haire losing to Jeff Jarrett at Greed. (B)

"Mean" Gene Okerlund is backstage again, this time with "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, the WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Gene asks Nash about his match later tonight, and Nash gives Rey credit for showing up tonight after he nearly powerbombed him through the ring on Nitro. But Nash says that that's the problem with Rey; he's got more heart than brains and it'll cost him tonight. Nash says that anyone who nearly got powerbombed through the ring should have the good sense to avoid the person who did it to them, but instead Rey shows up for more tonight. Nash says that Rey ain't walking outta here with the title tonight. (C+)

If "Hacksaw" loses, he must retire

O9mmnFas.jpgvs.9umPviHs.jpg

Everything is on the line in this one for "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan who, as Tony explains, must win this match or else his WCW career is over. "Hacksaw" gets the crowd going early on with a "USA" chant while Tony and Mike talk about how unfair it was for Eric Bischoff to make Duggan put his career on the line tonight, while Bobby Heenan simply adds that Duggan should have minded his own business. This is a match that is a lot better than it has any business of being at this point, and "Hacksaw" looks good early on with some big time punches to "Double J". Duggan hits some shoulder blocks and clotheslines, but Jarrett eventually takes control after hitting a russian leg sweep. Jarrett begins to work over Duggan and it is becoming clear that Duggan is no match for "The Chosen One" at this point in his career. Duggan still has plenty of heart, however, and he keeps getting up, keeps trying to fight back, but in the end Jarrett hits the Stroke and covers Duggan for the one-two-three.

Jeff Jarrett defeated Jim Duggan at 8:16 by pinfall with a Stroke (B)

The match is over and so, unfortunately, is "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan's career. "Double J" celebrates in the ring and then leaves, and Duggan then slowly regains his bearings and realizes what has happened. Duggan gets emotional as he stands in the ring, looking at the WCW crowd one last time, before making his way back up the ramp as the announcers put over "Hacksaw" and his amazing career in professional wrestling. (C-)

The man called Sting is in action next against "The Monster" Abyss, who is accompanied to the ring not by Raven, but by Daffney. Sting immediately attacks as the bell rings but despite getting some good shots in, Abyss just seemingly shrugs them off and tosses Sting into the corner. Abyss charges in, Sting moves and starts lighting Abyss up with a series of punches and kicks until Abyss explodes out of the corner and levels Sting with a clothesline. Abyss tosses Sting out of the ring and grabs a steel chair. The referee warns Abyss about using it, by Abyss just ignores it and blasts Sting with the chair, getting himself disqualified in the process.

The match may have ended in disqualification but Abyss isn't done punishing Sting yet as he keeps bashing Sting with the steel chair. Abyss then hits three nasty chokeslams on the floor outside the ring and blood is beginning to spill from Sting's mouth as the announcers are voicing concerns about internal damage. Referees and security are trying to get Abyss away from Sting but "The Monster" is swinging at everything that moves, except for Daffney, until...

FrQBvDLs.jpg

Raven finally comes out to gather his monster, the damage more than done. As Raven and Abyss return to the back, medical personnel attend to Sting as the announcers wonder when we'll see Sting in WCW again, if ever, after the injuries he no doubt has suffered here tonight at the hands of "The Monster" Abyss. (B)

We head to a somber-looking announce trio who once again express concern for Sting after what just happened. They reluctantly transition into talking about the next match between Diamond Dallas Page and Ric Flair for the United States Championship, talking about the fact that Page walked out of their match at Greed but tonight he has to face "The Nature Boy" in the ring one more time. Bobby Heenan says that Flair should have left well enough alone. DDP let him off easy last time, but Page isn't going to be so forgiving tonight. Tony and Mike both disagree with that point of view, and then Tony sends us back to the ring for more in-ring action. (B)

Somewhat surprisingly, this one actually starts off with a collar and elbow tie-up in the middle of the ring. They trade holds and counter holds for a little bit, an exchange that Flair wins, but then DDP gets frustrated and just decks Flair with a big right hand. Flair fires back with some hard knife-edge chops and the brawling portion of this match has officially gotten under way. Flair goes for the Figure Four early, but Page is able to fight out of it. Page then, in turn, goes for the Diamond Cutter, but Flair is able to avoid that. Page then tries to walk off as he did at Greed, but Flair runs after him and catches him about halfway up the entrance ramp and brings him back to the ring. They go back and forth in the ring for the next several minutes, with both men picking up a couple of near-falls but no three counts. Page goes for the Diamond Cutter again, but Flair is able to avoid it again and roll DDP up from behind for another near-fall. Page hits a russian leg sweep and a huge spinebuster for another two count, and then an inverted atomic drop and a discus clothesline for another two count. Clearly growing frustrated, Page starts to argue with the referee, which allows Flair to catch him off guard with a roll-up for yet another two count. Page goes for the Diamond Cutter for a third time, Flair counters it into a roll-up, but then Page counters Flair's roll-up into a roll-up of his own, putting his feet on the ropes for added leverage, and steals a three count.

Diamond Dallas Page defeated Ric Flair at 14:18 by pinfall with a roll-up with his feet on the ropes. DDP retains the WCW United States Championship (B)

After the match, DDP quickly grabs his title belt and leaves the ring, making his way back up the ramp. A frustrated Ric Flair paces in the ring after the match as Diamond Dallas Page once again found a way to survive with his title reign intact against Flair. But judging from the look on Flair's face, this issue isn't over just yet. (B+)

WCW World Heavyweight Championship

YwfbEFBs.jpgvs.qnDHH19s.jpg

It is main event time as "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash defends the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Rey Misterio Jr. Nash starts off by challenging Rey to a test of strength, mocking Rey by holding his hands high in the air where Rey can't reach them. Rey reponds with some stiff kicks to the back of Nash's leg and just like that the fight is on. Rey tries to keep the pace high at all times, making it difficult for the bigger, slower Nash to keep up. Rey's speed eventually backfires on his as he runs head-first into a big boot from Nash. The pace of the match slows as Nash slowly and methodically starts to wear Rey down, throwing Rey around the ring with one power move after another. But every time it looks like Nash has things under control, Rey starts to fight back. At one point Rey even goes for his Springboard Hurricanrana, but Nash catches him mid-air and drives him to the mat with a sidewalk slam for a two count. Nash then goes for the Jackknife Powerbomb and we almost get a replay from several years ago as Rey starts punching Nash in the face. Nash eventually falls and Rey covers, but this time Nash manages to kick out at two and keep history from repeating itself. Irate at almost losing to Rey again, Nash hits a nasty big boot, another sidewalk slam, and then the straps come down. Nash goes for the Jackknife Powerbomb again, and this time he hits it and covers Rey for the one-two-three.

Kevin Nash defeated Rey Misterio Jr. at 11:33 by pinfall with a Jackknife Powerbomb. Nash retains the WCW World Heavyweight Championship(B)

The announcers put over the heroic effort by Rey Misterio Jr. here tonight, but it is Kevin Nash who stands tall as the World Heavyweight Champion as Clash of the Champions comes to an end.

I'll have this updated tomorrow with the results of the prediction contest and, hopefully, I'll have an episode of Nitro to post as well.

Meanwhile, anyone know how to get this moved to the 2020 section? I'm thinking that will be the best way to go in terms of getting eyes on this and, again hopefully :D, building/maintaining an audience.
