A few questions

Recommended Posts

This could probably go in the small questions thread, I realize that, but since I have multiple questions, I figured I should make a new thread for it.

I have a few questions that I want to post here, as I have a strong feeling a lot of you guys are loyal, serious players, where as I play for a while then stop because I either get busy with other stuff, or lose interest. I'm really trying to focus on my WCW 1991 dynasty though.

First, how do you guys play the game as far as settings, like match aim impacts, gimmick impacts, match/angle ratio, all the options found on that settings page? Me personally, I play with almost everything turned off. I'm not very good at this game to begin with, and having all that stuff on to have to worry about, which is not what I want to do.

Second, I use the dirt sheet a lot, and every so often, I see that the segment was penalized due to bad booking decisions. Can anybody tell me what this means exactly?

Also, 2 more questions with my developmental fed. Is there a way I can set it up so that only I can hire and fire new staff and wrestlers? I have sent several of my guys down to the developmental territory, and I thought when I invested in it, it would just be that, a developmental territory that I signed wrestlers for, but I see that the owner of the fed (GCW for anyone that might be reading my dynasty report on the forums), has hired several wrestlers too.

Last but not least, how can I can my developmental fed a tv show. I have one set up, but when I go to broadcasting and negotiations, only my WCW shows are available. Does the owner have to work a tv deal to get my developmental fed on tv?

If any of you guys can answer any or all of those questions, it would go a long way to helping me. Thanks.

If you click on "Child Companies" you can set them to "Development Territory" and they can't hire any new wrestlers themselves. <img alt=";)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

<p>I would play with whatever options make the game more fun for you. I like to keep data on my wrestlers performances, and that information plays a big role in determining who moves up and down in my fed. I don't particularly care about the effect created by the crowd control mechanism, and managing my show to that degree does not interest me at this time, and it throws off my data, so I turn it off.</p><p>

Everything else I leave on, though with the Key Realism and Pure product that I'm running right now, gimmicks and storylines are a complete non-factor, and that's also fine with me, as I'm more into the aspects of roster management, talent development, and backstage politics. My challenge is finding workers that can wrestlers my style and dealing with the heightened injury rate that comes with it. I've often been tempted to raise the injury level, simply because I enjoy having to navigate those bumps. </p><p>

If the game starts to get stale, try using one of the options you never have.</p>

  • 2 weeks later...

<p>So just to be clear, the only way my developmental fed can get a tv show on the air is either if I create my own WCW Network (which I'm assuming would cancel any tv contracts I have currently) or wait and hope that the promotion gets popular enough that the AI can secure a tv deal for it. Is that correct?</p><p> </p><p>

Also, on the subject, is there a way to have some say in the booking of a development fed? Or is the AI head booker totally in charge of all that? I don't want to actually book the shows, but there are certain wrestlers that I want to have as faces/heels, and certain wrestlers that I want to have a manager. Can I do that, or is it completely in the hands of the AI?</p>

Either you give them one when they aren't big enough (by having your own broadcaster) or they become legit big enough to get one on their own. Creating your own broadcaster does not impact the current TV deals you have. So unless you have massive money so you can open a broadcaster of significant size, its often better to keep your TV deals and possibly even your PPV deals with the current broadcasters and use the company-owned broadcaster for child companies and B shows. </p><p> </p><p> As for the booking, the AI will do what it needs to do. They are wickedly expensive, but a huge company with millions in the bank only has so much to spend it on anyway. </p><p> </p><p> Putting a child company on TV can provide huge benefits. I ran some tests in a particular save (WCW Lives in 2001) where I gave them a child company that started with zero popularity, a Tiny (US only) subscription broadcaster, and the child company a TV show on it. I ran a test sim. Filled with some high level prospects, the child company flourished. The workers flourished. Some reached mid-card or upper-midcard popularity levels for a national sized promotion by the time they were called up by the AI. I think CM Punk was around C+ or B- when he got called up. That's across the US, not just in a single region. </p><p> </p><p> A broadcaster of your own can provide other advantages. For example, you can use it to break into regions that you can't get coverage in otherwise. But that can conflict with current broadcasters. Let's say you are a national-sized US-based company. You have a Big PPV deal but can't get PPV deals outside of the US because you just don't have the popularity. So you start a broadcaster with Medium coverage in the US and Tiny coverage in a few other regions. Cancel your existing PPV deal. Put your PPV events on your own broadcaster. Less money from the PPV events and less growth in the home region (which doesn't matter much as you are already national) but more growth in foreign markets. And as you can afford to, you increase the size of the network in whatever regions you want.</p>

While I understand your point about having less restrictions, you may find that after getting over some of the initial learning curves, that playing with some of those effects turned on will actually result in better shows and a more satisfying experience. Match Aims and Crowd Management in particular work hand in hand to enhance your overall show grade and can impact booking decisions greatly.

Maybe I need to turn a few more things on and take my chances, as my shows are not doing as well as I expected, even with the big stars like Sting and Flair. Care to advice what I could turn on? Specifically match aims and crowd management I'm guessing? Problem is, I'm afraid if I turn stuff on, my ratings will get even worse.

The first thing I would consider is your own expectations? What are you thinking you should be getting for grades? And is that realistic?

Simply rule I go by - if your are not losing popularity with your show grades, you are doing okay. If you are gaining popularity, you are doing pretty well. We all want A* matches and constant A shows, but that's not realistic with most mods.

Another thing to consider - how does the AI do with the company. Before I jump into any mod or company, I will run a test sim for a few months, or even a few years. This gives me a baseline for what the AI gets for grades. I expect that typically, I can do a grade or two above the AI most of the time.

Never thought about the test run, should have done that. My show grades usually lose more popularity than they gain. For instance, my last show gained popularity in 7 regions but lost popularity in 9 regions.

I'm not trying to compete against any company, just trying to put out the best shows possible so that my company can get better network deals. I'm using the Rising Storms mod and using WCW in 1991, so it's a Cult Company right now, and I believe still #2 in the rankings, I just don't want it to slip down.

<p>One of the things you did that is probably hurting you the most (as someone who reads your diary) is you dropped Saturday Night to 1 hour. Your main event in TEW should be 16-20 minutes long so you avoid the TEW-imposed rating cap of B-graded matches. It doesn't matter what you have turned on or off if you run 12-14 minute main events as they'll get you B's, which before the stampede of people come screaming in with "That's all you need to get ever.", yes but he's never going to grow in his two key regions.</p><p> </p><p>

The rest of it I would say take some of the other advice and start turning stuff on. I can't help with that since I have almost everything on all the time. Honestly, running pretty vanilla Regular matches with slow build for the long ones (16+ minutes), I've never had an issue with crowd management like I did in previous versions of the game.</p><p> </p><p>

Are you running WCW as pop>performance or pop much greater than perf? I don't remember the default setting as I change everything to equal. Much pop is tougher to do starting out in a fed like this one since most people don't have overwhelming pop to start out with, and you're struggling along so you're not getting them any pop boosts (and can lose some if their segments are lower than their pop).</p>

I actually changed WCW Saturday Night back to a 2 hour show, but I will definitely make my main events for all my shows a minimum of 16 minutes, keeping it in that 16-20 minute range. I think I'm going to finish out the month of January as is with my settings, then to start February, I'll turn a couple more things on such as Match Aims and Crowd Management. Although, if my storylines keep losing heat as rapidly as they have, I may have to turn off Strict Storylines.</p><p> </p><p> I will have to check my product when I get home, I'm not sure, but if there is a way to equal it out so that pop and performance are close to equal, I will definitely do it. Seems like the way to go. I'll keep tweeking (sans making spreadsheets listing everyones strength and weakness, which I don't have time to do), and continue to book the best I can. I guess if I continue to put on Show Ratings that lose me popularity in regions, I can take solace in knowing I'm at least having fun with the game.</p>

<p>I don't believe anyone mentioned it but unless I imagined it you can also call development talent up for one night deals the same way you hire local talent when booking your show.</p><p> </p><p>

So bring them up to do dark matches, get squashed etc</p>
