1997: War of the Worlds

On the heels of the most controversial moment in the history of sports entertainment, the war between the two largest wrestling companies has grown only hotter. As familiar faces find new homes and new attitudes begin to emerge, the end of the century is about to ignite into a true War of the Worlds.

A few notes:

* We begin November 1997 week 2, the night after Survivor Series.

* We have sped up the timeline so that Neidhart, Davey, and Brian Adams are already out of the WWF.

* News will be through 2 sources. PWI for objective news and a company source for subjective news.

* This will be a competitive venture, not a cooperative one.

* Until further notice, Monday Night Raw will be live the night after PPVs and taped otherwise.

*Should it need to be said, given that we’re going to be in the attitude era we appreciate readers giving some leeway when it comes to suggestive and at times profane language so that we can be faithful to time period.

He goes to put the ankle lock on again, and when Triple H is squirming in the middle of the ring he blatantly kicks Shamrock low causing a disqualification. He acts like that kiss has made him the incredible hulk and he stands on his feet while the nWo guys celebrate like its a miracle. Nash enters the ring and cuts a promo saying that the Outsiders are your WCW tag team champions (the crowd boos knowing that the Steiners are the champs) and Kevin Nash will, with all due respect to everyone here, be the one doing the nWo proud because it will be Big Sexy bringing home that championship match by winning World War 3. And Nash has a warning for The Giant..."big man, you want me? I'll see you in War and I'll crush your soul." Finally, Hogan grabs the mic and starts saying it doesn't matter who in the nWo wins at World War 3 because this title is remaining in the nWo forever and a day. And it will stay that way at Starrcade because "Stink" isn't man enough to get the job done." The fact of the matter is the largest arms in the world rule professional wrestling, the nWo rules this business brah, and that will never end. And whatch......" With Jericho stunned, Wright rolls him up and grabs his tights. La Parker holds Dragon's legs as he tries to get back in as Wright gets the 1...2..3. Well their loss is WCW’s gain because early this morning, the WCW Executive Committee has reached out to Canada’s favorite son, a wrestling icon, Bret Hart and the committee has made him an offer to come to WCW where tradition is honore….” Bischoff comes running out from the back and asks JJ who in the hell does he think he is? Bischoff says that he is the one that runs the day to day operations of WCW and not this stupid committee. Their duty is to advise but the one who controls the purse strings of this company is Eric Bischoff. And if Bret Hart is entering this turf…it will be as a member of the nWo because he is smart enough to see where the power lies. Bret Hart is a “kock out kinda guy” and he belongs in black and white and if he is getting signed it will be by Eric Bischoff, the president of this company, and it will be for the nWo and not WCW. JJ and Bischoff bicker up the ramp as Gene tells us what a bombshell this: Bret Hart is a free agent and could he be headed this way? Gene tells us to stick around; the main event of Luger versus Ric Flair is next. Luger responds by shoving Ric, Ric shoves back and the match is on. This is a back and forth match with Flair trying to injure Luger’s leg and Luger trying to take out his back. Luger eventually gets control and starts to work on Ric’s back and gets several near falls but when he goes for the Torture Rack, Flair pokes him in the eye and the dirtiest player in the game takes over. He goes for the figure four but Luger uses his leg strength to power out and both men collide and tumble to the floor. As they are down on the floor out runs Savage and Hall and Nash. They start taking apart Luger as well as Flair. This brings out Buff and Hogan and Bischoff and as they hold both Luger and Flair in the ring, Hennig. The local promotion will be owned and operated by WCW and will run in the Carolina region that was, for so many years, the hotbed of Jim Crockett Promotions. It will be a place where future stars of WCW and graduates of the Power Plant will go to continue to grow and mature as performers. WCW Carolinas will begin holding shows in February of 1998. WCW is already signing trainers, staff, and wrestlers for the new company. Hulk Hogan's contract will expire in the spring of 1998 and there is expected to be interest from the WWF as well as in Japan. It can be argued that WCW is in a vastly different place than it certainly was in 1994 and even last year in 1996. Hogan has been the #1 heel in wrestling and has been the main focus of the shows but as the calendar turns to 1998, will Eric Bischoff decide that WCW no longer needs Hogan as much as they needed him before? And if so, what deal will WCW offer...and will he accept? Starrcade will feature the conclusion of multiple feuds that have dominated 1997. Do not be surprised to see a legend or two take time off of the air after the "Grand Daddy of Them All" next month from the brand new MCI Center in Washington, D.C. As the WWF heads towards 1998, there is a lot of meetings going on behind the scenes about the direction of the company. Obviously major storylines revolving around DX, Steve Austin, the Undertaker, etc will continue to carry the company but there are reportedly some inklings that they may tread into unknown territory with “adult themes” as one insider put it. Wrestlemania XIV, scheduled for March in Boston, is already being plotted out with what one person called a big shock already planned. Several characters may be “evolving” soon. One name being bantered about is Goldust who many feel has lost momentum with the current incarnation. Mick Foley (Mankind) was absent this past Monday Night in what is being described as a protest concerning the ending of Survivor Series. It’s said that everyone from Vince McMahon down the line understood Foley’s position and allowed him to miss without repercussions. He was at the tapings for this week’s episode. WWF recently expanded their PPV network to include Europe and Japan. As both WWF and WCW gear up, extra revenue streams have become very important. WCW recently attempted to plant stories in the media about WWF having a supposed pro-**** sympathy. Several reporters who were expected to run with the story instead publicly denounced it, leading many in the public including the Anti-Defamation League to scold WCW for insensitivity. Finally, the ratings are in. RAW scored a 13.36 while Nitro scored 15.06. Another win for WCW.</div></blockquote>

But Eric has a point and he is in charge of WCW and so, last Tuesday, Harvey allowed Eric to also reach out to Bret Hart for a counter argument presumably for the nWo and that brings us to the second announcement. Earlier this morning, WCW's Offices in Atlanta, received a fax from Bret Hart. It says: "Alot has happened in my life over the last 8 days. And the love and respect that I have been shown by the wrestling industry and its fans has been overwhelming. My family and I thank everyone for their good thoughts and letters and well wishes. So it seems that the Hitman is the hottest property in professional wrestling? It seems both WCW and the nWo want the Excellence of Execution to join their ranks? Instead Eddie believes in opportunity so he is going to give opportunity. He went to the WCW executive committee and proposed a compromise which they agreed to: Ultimo Dragon vs Dean Malenko. The winner faces Eddie for this belt this Sunday at World War 3. This brings out Ultimo and Dean. Ultimo looks pissed cause this was supposed to be his championship bout. But what can he do? They beat down Piper and hold him as Raven drops him with the DDT. Raven screams "now you feel my pain" as officals jump into the ring. Back in the ring, Jericho hits a knee smash (the code breaker) for a two count. Benoit battles back and goes for the diving headbutt but Jericho rolls out of the way. Jericho hits the Lionsault and gets the 3 count for what has to be an upset. Winner: Chris Jericho [Following the match, Benoit looks angry but ultimately he shakes Jericho's hand. See, this Sunday there is going to be a massacre and it will be when Curt Hennig puts down the old dog that is Ric Flair. Everyone thinks it was fear or insecurities that made Hennig turn on the Horsemen but its anything but. Curt Hennig is simply the embodiment of perfection in that ring, and he out grew playing with the kids of WCW. He is with the real big boys, the stars of this business, and that is the nWo 4-Life. And Ric will fade slowly away this Sunday...that is a promise. But that isnt to say that Chavo and Juvie dont get in their shots, they do, and damned near get a 3 count on Buff but that is when the games end. Scott Norton comes in and blasts both men and throws Juvie to the floor from a belly to belly that sends him over the top rope. He then plants Chavo with a spinebuster and Buff is tagged in to hit the block buster for the 3 count. Winner: The Giant Grade: 55 [Following the match, the nWo flood the ring. They try to get their before the finish but don't make it in time. Giant is smart enough to see this coming and he bails. He goes over the stands and up the fans to where DDP and Lex Luger are standing. They mock the nWo as they escape and leave. We then hear Hogan's music as the announcers tell us he will call out Sting when we come back. ]</div></blockquote> =============================================== <div style="text-align:center;">******COMMERCIAL BREAK*******</div> =============================================== [Nitro returns and Hogan is already in the ring screaming "where are you Sting?" Hogan calls Sting a coward. He says he is a sham. That he is afraid of Hollywood and doesn't want none of him at Starrcade. He demands Sting to come out. And suddenly he comes down from the rafters. The nWo crowd the ring area but Hogan says let him in. The camera is to Sting's back as he walks into the ring, baseball bat in tow. He walks up to Hogan....and hands him the bat. Sting then gets on his back and lays down. The fans the announcers figure it all out. It is another fake Sting who is laying there as Hollywood Hogan hits the weakest looking legdrop two times. Eric Bischoff counts as Hogan makes the cover...1...2..3. The nWo sell it as Hogan has won this battle. The announcers call it for the b/s it is and wonder, for the second week in a row, where...is...Sting? When Vader covers his face, Goldust kicks him between the legs and hits a DDT then makes the cover. He ensures the referee can’t see Vader’s face and gets the win. The current plan for Bret Hart is no matter what side he ends up on Sunday - he will be wrestling at Starrcade. Rocco Rock was cut loose this week from his WCW deal due to showing up high as a kite at WCW Saturday Night. WCW has re-branded their developmental system as WCW Mid Atlantic. WWF is looking to expand their foreign influence in 1998 with an expanded TV lineup. Many have noticed that there has been no mention of the Light Heavyweight tournament or title since Survivor Series. WWF has changed direction and is dropping the idea. Reportedly Vince McMahon doesn't want a second rate division against WCW's cruisers. Several familiar faces will be returning to WWF TV in the coming months. While everyone has been tight lipped, there are rumors flying for a "major" development at the Royal Rumble. WWF has no plans for a developmental system at this time.</div></blockquote>

He is walking through the debris field and we see a destroyed WCW ring intercut with World War 3 images from 1996. (This is the video that airs on the WWE Network broadcast of WW3). The video ends with him being incinerated. ] Grade: 73 Immediately the video takes us into the sold out Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Michigan as the crowd comes to life and pyro goes off around a giant jumbo tron. Tony, Bobby and Mike Tenay all welcome us to war. They sell the 60 man 3 ring World War 3 match later tonight and confirm the WCW.com story that sources say Hollywood Hogan's insurance policy is to enter the match himself. They then confirm that earlier today Bret Hart arrived at the Palace of Auburn Hills and has been in seclusion. JJ Dillion from WCW and Eric Bischoff from the nWo will come to the ring later tonight and make their pitch for the Excellence of Execution. We now go to the ring with our first match here at World War 3. They eventually take control themselves and at one point, Jacquelyn decks Meng on the outside who just death glares at her and charges but she avoids the rush and he posts himself. That allows Booker T to take control again and some near falls almost give Harlem Heat the victory. Stevie Ray and Barbarian brawl on the floor and that leaves Meng in the ring with Booker T. Meng ducks a side kick and hits Booker with his own savate kick. This brings Jacquelyn back to the apron to distract Meng when, JIMMY HART making his WCW return jumps from the crowd and pulls Jackie down. She jumps on his back and starts pounding him and that distracts Meng who turns around and gets a Side Kick. Booker goes up top and nails the Harlem Hangover...1...2...3. Following the match, Harlem Heat and Jacquelyn go up the aisle while Jimmy and the Faces of Fear seeth. They show us Raven's challenge to Roddy Piper and the Flock's beat down. We then see Piper accepting and are reminded that this is a match that is not sanctioned by WCW. WCW has agreed to provide a referee for the match but there are no rules and it will not be entered into the record books. Raven tells them to stay in the audience while he jumps the barricade. This is a wild brawl from the start with the referee standing by and watching. They start in the ring with plunder but soon have hit the floor and end up in the audience brawling up to them. Raven and Piper end up in a concession stand where Piper sends Raven head first into a popcorn stand busting him open. They brawl near the bathrooms but don't go in and they head back down stairs to the set area. Raven takes a piece of "barbed wire" from the World War 3 set and gouges at Piper's head and that busts Roddy open. They brawl back to the ringside area where Piper brings in a chair and goes to hit Raven with it in the ring, but Kidman has jumped the guardrail and took the chair from him. Piper decks him and calls him an annoying rodent but that allows Raven a chance to get up. He goes for the DDT but Piper drops down and crotch chops Raven and locks on the sleeper hold. The crowd comes to their feet as Raven starts to fade but then the flock floods the ring. Kidman, Sick Boy, Lodi and Saturn dismantle Piper. Kidman hits the Shooting Star Press (Known from now on as the Seven Year Itch) and Saturn hits a DVD. Raven gets up and drops Piper with a DDT. He covers...1...2..Piper kicks out. The flock goes to pounce again and grab Piper up while Raven sets up a chair in the center of the ring. Raven screams "I feel your pain" and drops Piper to the mat with a DDT again. 1...2... AND PIPER STILL KICKS OUT. The flock grabs a nearly unconscious Piper once moor and Raven screams "Goodbye" and drops Piper one more time with a DDT but this time its on the seat of the chair and Roddy Piper does not get up from that. 1...2..3. Raven wins. Winner: Raven Grade: 65</div></blockquote> Following the match, the Flock goes after Piper again but this time WCW officials flood the ring. Piper clearly cannot defend himselfand eventually Raven and the Flock pull back. Piper never once moves as the officials put him on a stretcher and rush him to the back. We follow it entirely as Piper is loaded into an ambulance and some WCW wrestlers can be seen in near tears as the Hot Rod is driven away. They battle on the floor where Eddie takes Malenko down with a flying suicide dive from the ring to the floor. He hits a brainbuster on the floor and rolls Dean in for a 2 count. Dean gets the Texas Cloverleaf in but before he can lock it on Eddie is able to get to the ropes. Dean starts taking control for awhile but Eddie, showing heart of his own, won't stay down. Eddie eventually hits 3 Amigos and a frog splash for the 1...2...Dean kicks out. Dean is back in control and he finally locks in the Texas Cloverleaf. Eddie screams and writhes in agony but he is able to get 3 fingers on the ring ropes just before he taps out. Dean has no choice but to let go and he goes to Eddie who rolls him up in a small package with his feet on the ropes for a 1...2..but the ref sees the feet. Eddie charges Dean but Dean reverses it and goes for a German Suplex but Eddie lands on his feet. Eddie nails Dean with the Brainbuster and then hits the Frog Splash from the top rope for the 1...2...3. Winner and still WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Eddie Guerrero Grade: 79 </div></blockquote> [The announcers show us, through still images, the situations that have led us to this match: Curt's induction into the horsemen, his betrayal at Fall Brawl and the destruction of Flair, Flair's return and his pursuit of Hennig. Flair settles into taking control and every time Curt tries to fight back, the 13 time world champ has an answer for him. Vincent gets on the apron and is decked for his trouble but that allows Curt time to chop block Flair and begins to work on his knee. Curt hits the fisherman's suplex but Flair kicks out at 2 and Curt throws Flair into the corner and works on him with some chops of his own before going for the Figure Four. Flair rolls him up into a small package for a very close two count. Flair goes for the figure four of his own and Curt is desperately trying to get out of it. He tries to get to the ropes and is unable to do so. Just as it is clear Curt is about to tap, Vincent is again on the apron and this causes Ric to break the hold and deck him once more. When Ric turns around, Curt kicks him blatantly in the crotch and the ref has no choice but to call for the disqualification. Following the match as Ric winches in pain, Curt takes the belt and bolts from the ringside area clearly knowing how desperately close he was to losing. Winner by Disqualification: Ric Flair Grade: 78</div></blockquote> The announcers talk about how desperate Curt Hennig was to save his title. We then go to the back where we see Curt heading down a hall and we can hear Flair screaming for him. Curt is racing to the parking lot, belt in hand and gets to a car. Bischoff is bowing down to him as he gets into the ring and he shakes Bischoff's hand as well as JJ's. Bret motions for the two to begin. JJ talks about the history of WCW and the NWA. He really plays up tradition and says that Bret and JJ have known each other for a very long time. JJ knows what Bret just left because JJ left it earlier this year himself. He knows how chaotic it was there and how the people up there are nothing but a bunch of 50 year old bosses acting like teenagers. JJ says Eric will promise him the world. Hell, he will promise Bret to be the second biggest star in the nWo behind Hogan...but WCW? WCW promises only opportunity and, the one thing that means the world to Bret, ...respect. Bischoff shakes his hand again and hands the nWo shirt to him. He tells Bret that he has the backing of a billionaire so the world can be Bret's. Why in the world would tradition matter to Bret Hart? Did caring about tradition serve Bret well in New York? No, it got him passed by. Bret knows Savage, he knows Nash, he knows Hall, he knows Hennig, he knows Syxx. Bret knows these guys, he knows that they're all about making money and that is the promise Eric Bischoff can make. He will give Bret Hart bucket loads of money. Bret plays to the crowd and then smirks at them. He walks over to JJ but then turns and walks to Eric. Bret puts his arm around Bischoff's shoulders as the crowd boos. Eric is smiling like the cheshire cat as Bret asks for the microphone. He says that both made compelling cases but there is one thing that Bret Hart has to admit...the opportunity to make money is appealing. That is the one thing that he didnt make before he got here and becoming rich in this business is an exciting prospect. (Bret looks at Eric and then says) "And Eric, you're right. I know Hall. I know Nash. I know Syxx. And they are all best friends with the man that screwed me just two weeks ago. And you? You strike me as nothing more than a less convincing con man than Vince McMahon is. Bischoff turns pale and starts yelling at Bret and shoves Bret. Bret rears back and decks Bischoff in his face as the crowd comes alive. Bret walks over to JJ Dillon and signs the contract with WCW. He looks down at Bischoff and just casually throws that Black and Pink nWo shit on Bischoff who is out. Bret mouths WCW to the cameras and walks to the back slapping hands along the way. As Bischoff is being pulled from the ring by some officials, clutching his jaw, we see Larry Zbyszko up by the entrance way. Ring #2 has Flair and Luger who fight each other for a bit before forming an alliance as well. In ring #1, it is down to Booker T and the nWo and Booker throws Scott Norton out. The pack then go after Booker and soon he has been thrown out and the nWo has survied ring #1. In ring #3 The Giant and DDP remain with Eddie Guerrero, Meng and the Barbarian. In ring #2 Ric Flair, Lex Luger, Chris Jericho, Wrath and Chris Benoit are left. It is 10 vs 5 for WCW and team WCW gets into ring #2 begging for the nWo to come take them. Hogan and company look scared but then they all point up. Kevin Nash, mocking Sting, repells down to ring #1. He is dressed in Sting's gear, along with the baseball bat but no mask. It is 10vs6 in favor of WCW but Nash has the bat and they all go into ring #2. A wild brawl breaks out and during that brawl, Wrath, Eddie, Benoit, Meng and the Barbarian go out as does Buff Bagwell. Also during the brawl, Nash has lost the bat. We are down to Ric Flair, Lex Luger, Chris Jericho, The Giant and Diamond Dallas Page vs Hogan, Hall, Nash, Savage and Konnan. Jericho eliminates Konnan as Savage and Page go at each other. Flair goes for Hogan and damned near gets him. Giant goes for Nash but Scott Hall gets in the way and Giant tosses him over the ropes like hes nothing. Hogan is free of Flair and nails Giant from behind and he and Nash and Savage are able to throw the big man out. While they celebrate DDP throws Savage out. Hogan throws Jericho while Nash throws Luger out. And we are down to DDP and Flair vs Hogan and Nash. Flair and Nash get tied up in the ropes and Hogan throws out them both. Hogan turns around - DIAMOND CUTTER. But Nash is in the ring and he Jackknife's Page. The Giant gets back in the ring and grabs Nash and goes for a Chokeslam but Nash is able to get away and he high tails it away. Giant is left with Hogan and DDP and with Luger and Flair still there cheering him on, he drills Hogan with the Chokeslam. DDP is back up and its academic as he throws Hollywood over the ropes and wins World War 3. This brings in Flair and Luger and, running down from the back, Bret Hart who is battling on behalf of team WCW. They are still out numbered when STING , the real Sting, comes up from under the ring. This prompts Larry to go on a long rant about how Bischoff is pathetic and just mad because Bret Hart embarassed him last night. As Larry is ranting, suddenly his headset is cut off and he cant talk. He grab's Tony's and just as he starts to speak, that headset is cut off. Bischoff comes out onto the stage and points and laughs at Larry as he is fuming. Bischoff mocks Larry saying "what's wrong? Eddie hits the 3 Amigo's suplexes and then a frog splash and retains the Cruiserweight Champion. Following the match, Eddie decimates Juvie with a brainbuster, a German Suplex and another frog splash. He takes off the "Miss You Rey" arm band and lays it on Juvie and leaves the ring. Bret puts his arm over Gene's shoulder as he tells Milwaukee how proud he is to be in WCW. He tells the crowd that it is no secret that the last few weeks have been trying times for he and his family and for the fans of the Hitman worldwide and last night he had a choice to make. But the fact of the matter is it was never really a true choice. The Hart family is tradition. The Hart family is pro wrestling. And the fact of the matter is, the rest of the Hart family would be here in WCW with the Hitman if Vince McMahon wasn't holding them hostage. And that's why Bret Hart did not join the nWo. The Hitman knows what it is like to work with an egomanical and arrogant ***hole for a boss. He knows what the "clique" is all about and he wasn't leaving one bad environment to join another. He is going to join the WCW. He is going to fight for WCW. He is... "Hey, yo. Bret shut the hell up". Scott Hall interrupts Hart's promo and he is up in the crowd along with Nash and Syxx. Nash mockingly waves at Bret and Syxx flips him off. Scott tells Bret that one of the reasons they left the WWF was because they could not deal with Bret's insuffering whining. And now he has brought it here to WCW. The fact of the matter is Bret made two bad choices in the span of just a few weeks. He made the choice to not do his JOB and he made the choice to jump on the Titanic that is WCW. Both of them fatal choices for his career. But if he has a problem with the Wolfpac, maybe he should pick his sack up off the floor and do something about it. Bret tells him any time, anywhere. But now we go to the ring in a match of friends. The WCW Executive Committee is eyeing these two for potential championship opportunites down the road and they want to see what they can do. It's gonna be a clinic. These two go super long and have, as expected, a clinic. It is a collision between two mat based opponents who can both go high flying. It is very much a strong style match and Malenko eventually gets control when he dumps Benoit to the floor and runs him into the guardrail and hits a brainbuster on the floor. Back in the ring he goes for the Texas Cloverleaf but Benoit struggles to reverse it. Malenko kicks him in the head several times, stiffly, and locks it in. Benoit struggles to stay in it but eventually gets to the ropes. Malenko goes for it again but Benoit drags Malenko down, hooks his arm and locks in the crossface. Malenko is now screaming in agony as he tries to make it to the ropes and just does. Both men are back up and both men run opposite ropes, Malenko leap frogs Benoit, Benoit goes for a drop kick but Malenko side steps it. Malenko goes for the brainbuster but Benoit rolls down behind and nails the German Suplex right on Malenko's head. Benoit goes up to for the headbutt but Malenko just rolls out of the way and Benoit crashes to the mat. Both men are down and just at that moment, RAVEN'S FLOCK jump over the barricade and hit the ring. Sick Boy, Kidman, Lodi, and Saturn attack both competitors and the referee has no choice but to throw this match out. Yes he is an Icon, but he is a man in his 40s with no working hip. He was broken down and had to be in pain for every waking moment of his life. You're in your 20s, you're younger and faster and better. He was here for one last run and you ended it....for what? Did it make you feel like a big man? You and your lackeys attacking people from behind make you feel all big and tough? And what the hell did Chris and Dean ever do to you, jackass? What's your deal, man?" Curt nearly taps out to the dragon sleeper but he is able to fight back into the match. He hits the Fisherman's Suplex but Dragon kicks out at two. Hennig locks in the Figure Four on Ultimo and mocks Flair as Dragon tries to survive. Ultimately, its too much and Dragon is forced to kick out but Hennig has a look of respect on his face for Dragon who gave him a fight. Children who are dressed in trench coats. Children dressed in long black wigs. Children wearing Sting masks and they have surrounded Bischoff and Hogan. As the lights flicker and the crows cry out the children, blank and faceless, state at Hogan and Bischoff. Ross turns out to be correct because we don’t see the world’s most dangerous man, we see a very small man come out, dressed as Shamrock and with some type of wig similar to Shamrock’s hair. He uses the same mannerisms and makes his way to the ring but Michaels says to slow down. Don’t forget it’s a cage match. Chyna then goes to the outside and brings a dog crate cage into the ring. “Shamrock” gets down on all fours and climbs into the cage. He’s latched in as Michaels sits on the cage, with a big smile and says at In Your House, Shamrock is going to be treated like the bitch he is. DX’s music hits and they leave the ring, but not before Triple H kicks the side of the crate, knocking it on it’s side. WWF have been busy with foreign distribution, reaching deals to expand their brand further into Canada, UK/Europe, Mexico, and Japan. This includes a new B-Show, WWF Heat. It's likely WWF is done with their hiring spree as of late and some expect a few talents to be let go at the turn of the new year depending on financials in December. There is a feeling that we'll see more of Vince McMahon on-screen but he is unlikely to return to commentary. WCW Chaos As the company should be celebrating a wildly successful pay per view and a Nitro that saw WCW win the Monday Night War by nearly 2 million more viewers, instead WCW got a week of chaos. It started at World War 3 itself when Chris Adams appeared to be under the influence of several intoxicants. He participated in the match and morale took a hit. Adams was initially suspended but he has now since been fired by WCW. Prior to Nitro, WCW held a drug test for some random talent, Buff Bagwell of the nWo tested positive for hard drugs and was immediately sent home. He has been sent to rehab. Then came the Saturday Night taping where all hell broke loose. Konnan, stupidly, started a fight with Bill Goldberg and promptly got his ass beat. WCW fined Konnan and the belief is he is not long for WCW. Lex Luger began acting like a jerk to Mean Gene Okerlund. A loud screaming match broke out and Luger beat up Okerlund. Luger was sent home and he has been suspended. He is due to return just prior to Starrcade. No word on if he will ever come back to the company or if Gene Okerlund will be on Nitro next week. All was not bad for WCW as they totaled just under 40,000 in attendance this week. The television push for Starrcade has begun, expect matches to be made more clear this week on Nitro. Next weekend, Saturday December Week 1, WCW will run a special event house show from the Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. It will be headlined by Diamond Dallas Page & Ric Flair vs Hall & Nash of the nWo - we are told not to read anything into that match up. Ratings: Nitro: 15.84 - 11,882,430 viewers.
