WCW Monday Nitro - Episode 125

Monday Week 2, February 1998 - Worcester Centrum; Worcester, Massachusetts

[Monday Nitro opens with a video package centered around the Cruiserweight Title but, through the video package we see historic moments of the Guerrero family. We also see Jushin Liger in Japan as well as Flyin Brian Pillman and modern WCW Cruiserweights like Jericho, Eddie, Juvie, Kidman, Dean Malenko, Guido and finally the Cruiserweight Champion, Rey Mysterio. The video fades out with the title fading to black.]

Grade: 64

[We then cut into the arena as the pyro shoots off and Tony, Mike & Larry welcome us to a landmark night in the history of Monday Nitro. Tonight, before a viewing audience of millions, the exciting cruiserweights of WCW take center stage. Tonight there will be seven matches...4 qualifying matches, two semi finals and a final where the winner will head to SuperBrawl in 13 days from the historic Cow Palace in San Francisco to meet WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Rey Mysterio as the number one contender.

We also expect to learn more about the fall out from Hollywood Hogan's "family meeting" with the nWo last week on this program. Raven is also here tonight and we will hear from Diamond Dallas Page about his World Heavyweight Title opportunity in the main event of SuperBrawl.

But now, we make history as we go to the ring with our first match in the one night Cruiserweight Title Tournament it is Chris Jericho who demanded WCW's Executive Committee give him this chance. And they have. He faces Japan's Akira Nogami.]

Grade: 78

============================

Cruiserweight Tournament Opening Round Match #1 : Akira Nogami from New Japan vs Chris Jericho

The beginning of the match is more Jericho trying to do high flying but soon, Nogami (who the announcers put over for his long running stay in New Japan of 14 years), begins to nail Jericho with some strong style strikes. He gets Jericho into the corner and peppers him with forearms and Jerich is forced to respond and suddenly the match has changed and has turned into a submission and striking match. Jericho nearly locks in the Liontamer but Nogami gets to the ropes and then begins working on Jericho's back for the STF. He locks it in and Jericho nearly taps before making it to the ropes. Nogami goes to the top and flies off for a double drop kick but Jericho catches him and reverses it into the Liontamer. Nogami struggles but eventually has to tap out as Chris Jericho moves on.

Winner and advancing to the Semi Finals: Chris Jericho

Grade: 71

============================

[Raven's voice can be heard talking about Goldberg. The camera pans around the arena and finally we see him at the top of the Centrum sitting alone. He says that the first shot in a war is rarely successful but, wars are filled with drawn out battles. Raven says he has seen the light and is blessed with the clarity of purpose and he will save Goldberg's soul before it can be corrupted by WCW. That begins at SuperBrawl because Raven is challenging Goldberg to meet a member of The Flock, a member of Raven's choosing, and be tested...be cleansed...be free. Quote the Raven, Nevermore. ]

[Nitro returns and the announcers tell us that while we are off and running for the WCW Cruiserweight tournament, and the 2nd opening round match is next, we must not forget about the match the wrestling world cannot wait for...in 13 days the future meets the present as Diamond Dallas Page challenges Sting for the WCW World Title at SuperBrawl. Here now is a video look at our champion.

The video focues on a crow before we get shots of Sting in the rafters before transforming to a look at the early days of Sting in the NWA. The big moments as he made his way through the ranks of WCW before the dark turn in 1996. We then see the silent stalking avenger for WCW as he goes after Hogan. Eventually we see Sting's triumphant win at Starrcade and see he and Page at the end of Souled Out sharing a look of competition but, a look of respect.]

Cruiserweight Tournament Opening Round Match #2: Kid Kash vs Jushin "Thunder" Liger

Liger tries to employ the same Japanese strong style tactics but Kash is successful early with some high flying tactics. The announcers put over Kash as a star in WCW Mid Atlantic and someone we will see flying around here on Nitro soon. But, Kash's arrogance gets the better of him when he goes for a flying hurricanrana from the top that Liger turns into a Ligerbomb for the 1...2..3.

Cruiserweight Tournament Opening Round Match #3: Guido vs Ultimo Dragon

The two circle each other and when they approach each other Ultimo Dragon lashes out with a series of kicks to Guido’s legs, forcing him to the ropes. They repeat the cycle and now as Guido is half in and half out of the ropes and he’s seething. When they begin to approach a third time, Guido reaches out and rakes Ultimo’s eyes. Using his momentary advantage he goes on the attack, getting a quick two count on a bridged belly to back suplex. Ultimo recovers and turns the momentum to his side when he ducks under a clothesline, then jumps up to the top rope and moonsault springboards onto Guido for a close two count. Ultimo whips Guido into the corner and charges but Guido slides down and when Ultimo is close Guido grabs him and helps him hit head first on the middle turnbuckle. Guido then pulls a schoolboy while keeping his feet on the ropes, unseen by the referee, for the win.

Winner and advancing to the Semi Finals: Guido

<iframe width=560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zVGHggXx8HM" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Nash asks Gene if he likes the new theme? Gene says it is catchy. Okerlund asks does this mean the nWo is dead? Nash looks at him and laughs and says the nWo is not dead...the nWo is now refocused. What began as a mission between two men who are closer than brothers was allowed to be over taken by the ego of one man who forgot that he DID NOT start this war.

So, Hollywood is gone and now, the Wolfpac leads the charge. The Wolfpac will continue their destruction of WCW and anyone that wants to hop on board the bandwagon can do so. The mission aint changed all that has changed is the removal of dead weight.

On to Bret Hart. Last week, Bret told the world that they will fight at Super Brawl in 13 days...thats cool with Big Sexy. The fact of the matter is that Kevin Nash has kicked Bret Hart's ass before. He's powerbombed Bret through table's before. He's left him in a broken heap before...and he will do so again. Bret wants wage his crusade against the Wolfpac through Nash...well, don't talk about it....bring it, bitch.

But that is for SuperBrawl. How about next week? "Hey Dallas...you think you've got Sting for the title in San Francisco...sorry pal but, you dont. Because here's a little announcement for ya...next week on Nitro, thanks to Easy E, Sting will defend his title against.....SCOTT HALL...Wolfpac in the House!!!]

[The announcers are stunned and say that can change everything. A mega main event, WCW title on the line, next week on Nitro. Sting vs Scott Hall. Wow. Fans, stay with us...when we come back, the semi finals begin LIVE on Nitro.

When the show goes to commercial we see a commercial of downtown New York City and the historic skyline. We see a table, we see a chair, we see a ladder, and we see chaos of some of WCW's greatest brawls intercut with scenes of New York.

Right at the beginning of the match, Guido tries a quick roll up with his feet on th ropes again but, this time the referee sees it. Liger takes over and drops Guido with a brainbuster, an exploding suplex and a German suplex for a close 2 count. The tide turns when Liger sets Guido up for a Liger Bomb but, Guido grabs him by the horns and tries to rip off the mask. Liger drops out and Guido nails him with a DDT. After that it is not long before Gudio locks in the half Boston Crab and Liger, after fighting for a long time, is forced to tap out.

[The announcers take us back to WCW's Boston Brawl from last week where Eddie Guerrero again demanded a rematch at Curt Hennig for the WCW United States Title. Match #6 - Cruiserweight Tournament Semi Finals: Heavy Metal vs Chris Jericho

At the beginning of the match, the two hug paying homage to their history in Mexico before Jericho came to WCW. But, soon, theyre trading near falls and vicious chops and shots in trying to defeat each other. Heavy Metal reverses out of a German Suplex attempt by landing on his feet and super kicking Jericho square in the face. He goes up to and nails a twisting splash for a two count. He goes for the La Casita (slingshot Sommersault Bodyblock) but, Jericho reverses it into a double knee face crusher for a two count. After some offense, Jericho goes for the Liontamer but Metal school boys him for a two count. Metal drops Jericho and does another twisting splash but Jericho has his knees up. Jericho nails the Lionsault and covers...1...2...3.

Winner and advancing to the Finals: Chris Jericho

Grade: 68

============================

[Gene Okerlund is at the Nitro set with Diamond Dallas Page. They applaud that match and Page shakes Jericho's hand as he goes to the back to quickly cool off before the finals. Gene turns his attention to the bombshell at the top of the hour...DDP's title match with Sting is in jeopardy as next week on Nitro Sting must defend his title against Scott Hall.

Page says that in November at World War 3, DDP outlasted 59 of the best wrestlers in the world. He outlasted the games of the nWo. He retired the Macho Man and dropped Scott Hall at Souled Out with the Diamond Cutter. So, the nW..err..Wolfpac wants to play some more games? No sweat here.

The fact is that as much as he loves and respects Sting..whether its Sting or whether its Scott Hall doesn't really make a difference. DDP's time has come and in 13 days, Page is walking into the Cow Palace and he is hitting someone with the Diamond Cutter and walking out the World Heavyweight Champion. And when that happens, WCW, the nWo, hell - the WWF, the entire wrestling world, will all FEEL THE BANG!"

Gene tells us not to go anywhere..the main event of Nitro, the finals of the Cruiserweight tournament is NEXT.]

Match #7 -The Finals of the Cruiserweght Tournament: Chris Jericho vs Guido

Both men are absolutely drained before the match even begins. Jericho asks for a handshake and Guido almost gives it before slapping Chris in the face and then hes pouncing and beating the hell out of Jericho. Early on Guido locks in the half Boston Crab and begins screaming at Mysterio that this is his. But Jericho makes it to the ropes. When Guido goes to grab him, Jericho grabs Guido and pulls him through the ropes to the floor with Guido landing hard face first onto the ring mat.

On the floor, Jericho nails a flying cross body block and then throws Guido into the guard rail and chops the hell out of the Italian. Back in the ring, Jericho nails the Lionsault but Guido kicks out at the last moment. Jericho charges but Guido backdrops him back over the ropes and this time its Guido's turn to fly off the top and nail a plancha to the floor.

With Jericho down, Guido goes over to Rey and runs his mouth. He spits in Rey's face and that enrages the champion who has to be restrained by the ref. With the distraction Guido grabs a chair and slides into the ring where Jericho has crawled back in. Jericho turns around...*CRACK*. Guido takes the chair and throws it away and covers just as the ref gets back in.

1...

2...

....CHRIS JERICHO kicks out. And Guido cant believe it. He looks exhausted and looks a little lost.

Guido goes for the Half Crab again but Jericho rolls him up, rolls out of it and locks on the Liontamer. Guido screams and almost makes it to the ropes but Jericho pulls him into the center of the ring. Guido wont tap out and screams and glares at Rey as Jericho wrenches back with what is left of his strength and that finally makes Guido tap out.

Winner and the #1 Contender for the WCW Cruiserweight Title: Chris Jericho

Grade: 74

[An exhausted Jericho starts to celebrate when Rey comes into the ring. He and Chris hug and the crowd comes alive cheering for Jericho. Rey bails out of the ring and looks at a glaring Guido who is furious but walking away. The announcers thank us for tuning into this historic Nitro and remind us that next week is Sting vs Hall for the title but, tonight, the night belongs to Jericho. He climbs to the top, but doesn’t see Kama who gets on the apron the shoves him off the turnbuckle, crashing and burning. The power of the LOD is evident as soon as the bell rings. Animal bullies Lynn into the corner where he and Hawk show the Impact Players how it’s done. A press slam later and Credible gets the tag but runs into the same problems. Even Sunny on the outside can’t help no matter how many times she tries to distract. Credible however gains an advantage when he narrowly avoids a running clothesline by Animal and responds with an enziguri. Lynn makes the tag and they begin working over Animal for a few minutes in their corner. They get a two count following super kick but Animal muscles through. When they try and go for Total Impact Animal backdrops both of them and makes a hot tag to Hawk who cleans house. After the Sandman makes his entrance through the crowd and gets in the ring it’s obvious Jarrett doesn’t know what to do with him. Once the match begins it’s a clear contrast of a traditional style versus brutality. For every old school hold performed by Jarrett, the Sandman is throwing him into the stairs, the post, or just resorting to old fashioned punches---which Cornette on the outside screams is a disqualification. As the match progresses the Sandman is taking over and drops Jarrett with a DDT. Sandman moves over to the ropes and climbs to the second rope, measuring Jarrett when Cornette waves to the back and the Blackjacks come running out. The referee calls for the bell as Sandman begins fighting both Blackjacks.

Sandman fights his heart out but the numbers aren’t in his favor. He holds his own until Jarrett retrieves the Sandman’s singapore cane and whacks the Sandman across the back. As Bradshaw and Windham hold the Sandman down on his stomach, one holding his legs and the other his arms, Jarrett canes the Sandman again and again as Cornette taunts asking if this is hardcore enough. Finally officials come out and force them away but the damage has been done and the Sandman is hurt bad.

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler take a moment to hype In Your House: No Way Out. Ross says in addition to the handicap match between the Nation and the Undertaker and Kane, we now know we’ll see Stone Cold Steve Austin defend his Intercontinental Championship against Vader. The New Age Outlaws will face the Godwinns in a non-title match. Mankind..or someone…will defend the European Championship against Goldust, and we’ll see a rematch between Marc Mero and a very angry Mark Henry.

It all happens in 2 weeks on pay per view!

The Rock is on his own tonight as he begins the match throwing everything he can at Kane but only manages to stun him. Every time he knocks Kane down, he sits up. It’s all Rock on offense in the opening minutes as he hits move after move but can’t keep Kane down. Kane drops the Rock with a big right hand then climbs to the second rope but the Rock is up, hitting Kane in the stomach then picking him up on his shoulders and delivering a Samoan Drop from the second rope. He makes the cover but only gets a two count. The match goes on with Kane flinging the Rock into the corner and when he bounds out after hitting hard the Rock goes right into a big boot. Kane again climbs the turnbuckles, this time to the top but the Rock flips up to his feet, runs over to the corner and grabs Kane in what looks like a Rock Bottom. Indeed it is, as they jump off the ropes, turning in mid air and the Rock slams him home. The Rock looks spent and Kane isn’t moving either until Paul Bearer screams out his son’s name and Kane sits up.

The Rock is looking at Kane with complete disbelief. As both men get to their feet the Rock lays into Kane with everything he has, staggering the big man into the corner. Kane responds by grabbing the Rock by the throat and choke slamming him. He makes the cover and gets the 1…2….kickout! Now its Kane’s turn to seem surprised.

It’s at this point that the Nation begins coming down the ramp until the lights go out.

When the lights come back on the Undertaker is standing at ringside, blocking the Nation with a chair in hand. D’Lo rushes him and catches a shot to the head. Kama is next with the same result. Finally Farooq approaches and engages the Undertaker in a brawl. Meanwhile in the ring, Kane flies from the top rope, clotheslining the Rock. He then picks the Rock up and delivers a Tombstone for the 1-2-3.

Rowdy Roddy Piper comes down to the ring and says that his guest tonight is the number one contender for the WWF Championship at WrestleMania and tonight this is his boot camp. Without further ado, he introduces Owen Hart.

Owen Hart comes down, shaking hands with Piper. Piper says he’s known Owen since he was just a little boy. He’s been through wars with the Harts but he always has respected them. And if there is anyone who can take the title off Shawn Michaels it’s………

D-Generation X comes down to the ring, as Piper asks them off-mic not to cause trouble. Michaels says that he’s not here to cause any trouble, he just wants to look Owen in the eyes and tell him two things from the heart. Owen is the luckiest man in the world for winning the Rumble but that luck comes to an end at WrestleMania because nobody is beating HBK, especially the snot nosed punk brother of that loser Bret Hart.

Owen lunges but Piper blocks him. Over Piper’s shoulder Michaels punches Owen with a right hand cheap shot. Owen drops, and Piper turns on Michaels, screaming at him and asking what his problem is. Piper then turns to check on Owen when Chyna hits a low blow. Doubled over, Piper is easy pickings for Triple H who grabs him and delivers a Pedigree. Meanwhile Michaels is all over Hart, peppering him with right hands. Hart fights back but when Triple H gets involved, the two of them keep on the attack. Chyna holds officials at bay as Michaels and Helmsley bloody him up. Piper sluggishly gets back to his feet but gets dropped again with some Sweet Chin Music. As the show ends DX stands, with their arms raised amid a scene of destruction.

So, I'm guessing you picked Sunny over Sable in their roster-destruction that happens every single game with WWF in this mod? There's no wrong choice in that btw. Got to be a little scary that WCW can still pull off that show rating without a single main eventer wrestling. Both of you are doing great jobs.

Internally, there was a strong expectation that Nitro would lose the night and it was seen as a worthwhile risk by Eric Bischoff to do this to highlight the stars of the division. -Jeff Jarrett and the Blackjacks vs the Disciples of Apocalypse

During my WWE Network marathon, I noticed that fans were really hot for the DOA during the birth of the Gang Warz. They could have been a nice stable, but really were dead in the water thanks to the angle and Vince trying not to look racist by making the white stable go over. Still, would be fun to see an attempt to revive them.

WCW Monday Nitro - Episode 126

Monday Week 3, February 1998 - The Metra; Billings, Montana

[Monday Nitro opens to

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3ekG8K8YBp0" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The video opens to a close up of a snarling wolf and pans back to reveal Hall, Nash and Syxx in a room where the Wolfpac banner is on the wall. There is all types of laughter and good cheer between the three. Nash mocks Bret Hart and says he really thinks that since he couldn’t cut it in New York, he’s gonna come here and knock down the big dogs? Please…

Syxx then presents a replica of the WCW Title to Scott Hall and they encourage Hall to practice how he will come to the ring this Sunday at SuperBrawl with the belt when he beats Sting on Nitro. Hall tries it over the shoulder, tries it dragging and finally, Nash puts it around his waist and snaps it together. The video ends with Hall saying “Stinger? Chico, tonight your time is up.” As Nash and Syxx bow to the future champ.

Fade out. ]

============================

[We then go live into the arena to Tony, Mike & Larry who hype the main event tonight where Scott Hall will indeed challenge Sting for the WCW World Heavyweight Title. As they are doing so, the nWo theme song blares and they look completely exasperated as Curt Hennig comes out. Per usual, he is cocky as he walks down to the ring. A referee is in the ring as Curt grabs the microphone from Dave Penzer.

Curt says that Eddie Guerrero is a persistent little gnat. And for that he does deserve some credit. Through his persistence, he now gets a chance at the champ and if he wins this match, “La Bamba”, will challenge for the US title at SuperBrawl. Now, there is this misconception that somehow Curt Hennig is afraid of Eddie Guerrero. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is there are some similarities between the two. Like Eddie Guerrero, Curt Hennig is a second generation wrestler. Like Eddie Guerrero, Curt Hennig has famous parents and a pedigree. Like Eddie Guerrero, Curt Hennig has wrestled all over the world.

But, unlike Eddie Guerrero, Curt Hennig has been a success everywhere he has ever been. So Curt Hennig has no reason to duck Eddie Guerrero. He told Eddie no to a rematch because Eddie hadn’t proved that he deserved it. But, here we are. Eddie can prove that now…so come on out La Bamba, and get beat…again.

Eddie Guerrero’s music hits and he races to the ring attacking Hennig immediately as the bell rings and the match is on.]

Match #1: Eddie Guerrero vs WCW United States Champion Curt Hennig – If Guerrero wins, he earns a US Title rematch in six days at SuperBrawl

Curt tries to get away from Eddie and the tactic allows Curt to sucker Eddie in and Curt throws Eddie headfirst into a guardrail. Curt gets into the ring and Eddie barely makes it back in before the 10 count. Curt scores several near falls before working on Eddie's neck and shoulder area in preparation for the Hennig plex. He finally nails it 1...2...Eddie's is barely able to kick out. Curt bounces off the ropes for a clothesline but, Eddie turns it into a jumping headscissor's take over and then Eddie on the offensive.

He scores several near falls before nailing the 3 Amigos. Eddie goes up top for the Frog Splash but, Curt rolls out of the ring and bails. Eddie follows after im into the aisle and throws Curt back toward the ring. He rolls Curt into the ring but the champ nails Eddie as soon as he gets in himself. Curt goes for the Hennig-Plex again but Eddie is able to cradle him for the 1...2..3.

Winner and new #1 Contender to the US Title: Eddie Guerrero

Grade: 79

[Following the match, Hennig is in shock as Eddie celebrates. Curt leaves the ring feigning leaving the ringside area but, when Eddie has his back turned, Curt grabs a chair and slides in. When Eddie turns around, Hennig nails him in the head with the chair busting Eddie wide open. Curt is on him in an instant before nailing him with the chair again. Hennig screams “you think you’re worthy?” as officials race to the ring to get him out of the ring and attend to Guerrero as Nitro goes to a break.

[Nitro returns and Raven is in the ring with his flock. He again talks about saving Goldberg’s soul which is why at Superbrawl he wants Goldberg to walk into Raven’s world. But, Goldberg is too scared to accept. He continues his rant and doesn’t notice that Goldberg has come out. Goldberg goes into the ring and crouches down at the corner. When Raven turns around, Goldberg charges, but Saturn jumps in front and eats the spear. The flock bails from the ring with Goldberg snarling and looking down at Saturn who was literally knocked out of his shoe. He grabs a mic and speaks for the first time saying “who’s next?” before dropping the mic and leaving. The Flock drag’s Saturn out of the ring and they leave with Raven smiling. The challenge has clearly been accepted.]

[Nitro then goes to a special video feature on the Hardys. We are told that they will open the show this Sunday at SuperBrawl.]

Match #2: Chris Jericho vs Kensuke Sasaki

A very japanese - strong style match that focuses alot on submission wrestling. Sasaki keeps going for the STF but he can never lock it on. Eventually Jericho is able to nail the Lionsault for a two count before locking in the LionTamer for the eventual submission.

Winner: Chris Jericho

Grade: 77

[Following the match Rey Mysterio has come out and he shakes Jericho’s hand. Guido is at the entrance way and he again demands a title match here tonight with Rey. He talks about how he busted his jaw in that match or he would’ve beaten Jericho. He wants his title match.

This brings out JJ Dillion who says that he doesn’t like Guido…but, he respects how tough the kid is. And he’s right, he finished the match with a broken jaw. The fact is that Guido is not medically cleared tonight to compete. And the fact is that Chris Jericho is in this match, JJ can’t take him out. But, Guido deserves a shot and we can add to this match. So here is what we will do: this Sunday at SuperBrawl, Rey Mysterio will defend his WCW Cruiserweright Title against Chris Jericho….and Guido…in a triple threat match. Jericho and Rey look surprised, Guido is thrilled.]

[Nitro returns to Mean Gene Okerlund who is in the ring with Harlem Heat. They talk about how the Steiners used to be an honorable tag team, one that someone could look up to but, here lately, they have turned their attention to cheap ass tactics and have kept Harlem Heat down. This brings out the champs and Scott gets on the mic and says that the simple fact is, the Steiners haven't changed...the Harlem Heat are just losers who can't get the job done. They have had chance after chance after chance to win these belts and they have simply lost the killer instinct. And the fact is that the Steiners are bored.

Stevie Ray gets on the mic and says "then lets make it interesting, give us one more chance at those belts this Sunday at SuperBrawl in a non disqualification match." Rick says "whats in it for us?" Stevie responds "if we can't win, we'll break up forever". Booker looks surprised at the proposal but, after a moment, shakes his head in affirmative.

The Steiners laugh and pretend to consider it before saying "hell, its your funeral, you're on". The match is made and either Harlem Heat becomes World Tag Team Champions again this Sunday or they must split up. It all goes down at SuperBrawl. ]

Match #3: Jushin "Thunder" Liger vs Bret “Hitman” Hart

Jushin and Bret have a long back and forth encounter that is a clear mix of styles. Jushin tries to hit aerial moves while Bret tries to lock in the Sharpshooter. The first part of the match, Bret dominates and then Nitro goes to a commercial. When the show returns, the camera catches Liger jumping off the top rope into a senton body splash onto the floor wiping out Bret and a camera man. Back in the ring, Liger nails a german suplex with a bridge for a two count and locks in a chicken wing that Bret nearly taps out to. But, Bret is able to reverse an abdominal stretch and then nail a back breaker and a spine buster. From there Bret hits the side russian leg sweep and is able to finally lock on the Sharpshooter. Jushin tries to get to the ropes but succombs to the pain just before reaching it.

Winner: Bret Hart

Grade: 81

[Following the win, Bret sees a fan holding a new Wolfpac shirt and goes out to the fan. He rips the shirt out of his hands and goes into the ring. Bret takes the shirt and shoves it into his singlet (near his crotch) before spitting on it and mouthing into the camera "your ass is mine Nash" and exiting the ring.]

[Mean Gene is at the Nitro set and he calls out Shane Douglas. This time Douglas comes out to Ric Flair's music instead of his robe. And he is laughing as he does so. Gene calls him sick but Shane says what is sick is this obsession that this company and its fans has with a dinosaur. Ric Flair might as well be dead because what he lived for, what he sacrificed for, what he ignored his family for; his career is dead. And now, Chris Benoit, Ric Flair's little "boy" and Ric's best "buddy", aka his bitch, Arn Anderson has a problem with it? That's...

Benoit comes out and says enough. Shane Douglas has a big mouth but, so far, he's just proven that he is a coward. He wants to mock people and attack them from behind but the Crippler is a man and is in his face so do something about it.

Just before they're about to fight Arn comes out and says now isnt the time or place. If the Nature Boy taught AA anything it is that big moments happen at big time events. And this is a big moment so Douglas, Benoit, you want to fight...lets do it at SuperBrawl. Benoit says that's fine with him and Shane says he can't wait.

Shane Douglas then spits in Arn's face and takes off before Benoit can chase after him. Arn and Benoit both are seething and Mean Gene is disgusted as Nitro goes to commercial.

[Nitro returns and the crowd comes alive as Diamond Dallas Page's music hits. Page comes out through the crowd and gets into the ring. He looks around the ring and touches all four ring posts and says the last several years have been a whirlwind and its funny because all DDP ever wanted was the respect of you fans and to wrestle in this ring. He never thought he would be in this position where this time in seven days, the People's Champion could be THE Heavyweight Champion of the World.

But tonight, DDP is, like everyone in Billings a spectator. He is here to watch the match that is coming up next because his fate is tied to whatever happens here tonight. And perhaps Page is a moron but he really doesn't care who wins. Sting is a man that Page respects. He's an icon of this sport and is the franchise of WCW and was our savior at Starrcade. But, when push comes to shove, he will eat the Diamond Cutter this Sunday and that will be it.

Scott Hall used to be one of Page's best friends in the business before he realized what a parasite the piece of trash is. But, the Outsider is dangerous and few people know that more than DDP. But, the fact is, few people know Scott Hall better than Diamond Dallas Page. And if push comes to shove, he too will eat a Diamond Cutter in San Fran.

The bottomline is this, whether its Sting or Scott Hall, Diamond Dallas Page is coming for that belt this Sunday at SuperBrawl. The dream used to be just to wrestle in this ring but now its so much more.

And when the night is over at the Cow Palace and Nitro comes to Anaheim next Monday, the whole world will be looking at a new day. A new era will have been born and Diamond Dallas Page will be THE man. He will be THE champion and the world will all...feel....the....BANG!

Match #5 - *Nitro Main Event* - WCW World Heavyweight Title Match: Scott Hall vs Sting

Hall is out with Nash and Syxx at ringside. Sting comes down from the rafters showing no fear. Early on both men try to gain the upperhand but can't get any traction. The champion nearly scores an early pinfall but, Syxx is on the apron and Sting punches him knocking him off. Nash tries to get into the ring but, the ref blocks him. The ref orders Nash and Syxx away from ringside to the delight of the crowd.

But, the distraction helps the challenger as he blasts Sting from behind and

takes control. Hall scores several near falls on Sting as Sting tries galantly to make it back into this match. Each time the champion scores a hit or a move, Hall is able to quickly take control back. Hall connects with the overhead powerslam but Sting rolls to the floor.

On the floor, Hall slams the champion onto the guardrail but makes a mistake when he charges Sting and Sting backdrops him over the railing into the fans. The champion then takes over and back in the ring, Sting has nailed Hall with punches and kicks and chops in the corner. Sting is able to lock in the Scorpion Deathlock and Scott Hall screams in agony.

Hall makes it to the ropes without submitting. He charges Sting who droptoe's him and locks in the Deathlock again. This brings out Bischoff who runs to the ring and distracts the ref just as Hall is tapping out. While this goes on, Syxx has jumped the railing from the crowd and does an spin wheel kick to the back of Sting's head before sliding out.

Hall covers, 1...2...the champ kicks out. Hall nails the Outsider's Edge and cockily covers the champ...

1...

2.....

...Sting kicks out.

Nash returns but Bret Hart has come out and attacked Nash in the aisle. He and Nash brawl all the way to the back. Syxx tries to get into the ring but, Page has come from the fans as well and drops Syxx on the floor with the Diamond Cutter.

Sting goes for the Stinger splash but Scott Hall moves out of the way. He sets up Sting for the Outsiders Edge again but, this time Sting slides down.

SCORPION DEATH DROP!

Sting drops the challenger and covers....1.....2.....3.

Winner and still WCW World Heavyweight Champion: Sting

Grade: 83

[Following the match, Page and Sting stand in the ring preparing for an attack. Bischoff is able to force Hall and Syxx to the back with Bisch saying "this is not over". As Sting watches this, Page has grabbed the belt. He looks down at it and then again at Sting and the fans rise as if Page might nail Sting.

Sting turns around and stares at Page apprehensively. Page looks at the belt again and kisses it before shoving it harshly into Sting. Page sticks out his hand, Sting grabs and shakes it. Page goes to leave but, Sting, showing a meancing look, pulls Page back and they bump chests.

The main event of SuperBrawl has been set. It's Diamond Dallas Page vs Sting for the WCW Title. It's this Sunday on Pay Per View.

Sting raises the belt above both of their heads as Nitro goes off the air.

As the show begins Vince McMahon is in his office addressing the camera. He welcomes the crowd to RAW to a few ‘you screwed Bret’ chants to which he seems annoyed. He hypes this upcoming Sunday’s In Your House: No Way Out and says that tonight we’re going to have a huge main event that he just had to personally announce. Tonight in this very ring, we’re going to see Owen Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin team up against Vader, Triple H, and the WWF Champion Shawn Michaels. With a smile he ends the segment to a chorus of boos.

Everyone saw it but him and to that he tips his hat. But he wonders if the old school good ol’ boys have the balls to go face to face with someone. Cornette says anytime anyplace. Heyman, wearing a wide smile says that sounds perfect. How about this Sunday? A six man tag to see who the better men are? The NWA take a few moments to discuss and Cornette accepts. Heyman says we’ll see you Sunday but JR asks the question who is ‘we’? Cornette just accepted a match and doesn’t know who the opponents are!

Owen begins the match versus Triple H and it quickly becomes aparent it’s really 4 on 2 with Chyna at ringside. They triple team Owen in the corner, a few times due to Austin being in the ring and the referee having his back turned. Owen fights back and gets close to making a tag but Shawn Michaels runs around the ring and distracts Austin drawing him to the floor which allows Vader to pull Owen back to their corner. There’s a two count on a heavy elbow drop and Triple H comes back in. He whips Owen into the corner but when he charges in with a running knee lift, Owen moves and Triple H crashes into the corner. Owen drags himself to the corner and makes the tag.

Austin hits the ring and immediately begins stomping Triple H in the corner. He then goes over to Vader, flipping him off, which draws the big man in the ring, allowing Owen and Austin to do some double teams of their own. Austin and Triple H battle for a few minutes before Owen comes back in just as Shawn Michaels gets the tag and they immediately begin brawling. When Vader tries to take a cheap shot on Hart, Austin charges in, punching him with a big right hand, knocking him off the apron. Austin then brings in Triple H over the top and we have a four man brawl. Vader meanwhile has gathered a chair and slides back under the ropes and smashes Austin across the back with the chair which causes a disqualification.

*WCW was obviously thrilled with the ratings on Monday night not just because it was another win against the WWF but, the show was hyped around Sting’s first title defense since winning the title in December. There had been some discussion behind the scenes of whether Sting could draw as champion and Monday helped to quell some of those concerns. WCW feels very confident heading into SuperBrawl as they believe the World Title match should really deliver.

*Diamond Dallas Page continues to impress upper management and he is perhaps on a stronger roll than anyone in the company. Consider the last 3 months: won World War 3 in November, retired Randy Savage in December, won the six man tag team match at Souled Out and has delivered two impassioned promos that have stood out the last two weeks on Nitro as some of the best things on the show. All of that has led to a real debate amongst the creative team about whether or not he should get the belt this Sunday. As of right now, no decision has been made.

*WCW has announced plans to continue their developmental expansion with the launch of WCW United Kingdom (WCW: UK) that will begin to launch and run shows over the next several months. It is part of a longer term strategic plan by management to grow WCW’s international branding and relations and exposure. It is why WCW will be doing a UK tour sometime this year.

*Expect WCW to run the next “special” house shows in March in Canada. That show(s) will be finalized this week and it will coincide with the week 2 Nitro that will air in Montreal.

*Is the Wrestling Network on its way? Some thought among WCW management and senior management at Turner is the possibility of using WCW’s vast tape library (UWF, Mid-Atlantic, Florida, JCP just to name a few) as well as WCW’s current product to launch a television network and channel owned by Turner that is completely wrestling themed. At this point the idea is in the talking stages and nothing firm has been set.

*Tickets for the WCW Japan SuperShow in April went on sale in Tokyo this past Tuesday.

*Expect Bobby Heenan to be on Nitro either this week or the following with what WCW is promoting as a “big announcement”.

*Attitudes are very positive in the WWF front office and lockeroom headed into this weekend's In Your House: No Way Out.

*Monday night the build for both WrestleMania XIV and the upcoming Saturday Night's Main Event. Expect to see a major sports celebrity worked into the mix.

*As of today a major heel is expected to turn following WrestleMania, laying the groundwork for a face to do the same during the summer.

*WWF brought in several new road agents over the last week to stem what some say was an increasingly negative vibe. Most fingers for that are pointed at Shawn Michaels.

*WWF will be spending a week in England the second week of April following WrestleMania. RAW, Shotgun Saturday Night, and Heat will all tape that week.

Finally, we see DDP win World War 3 and Sting defeat Hollywood Hogan for the WCW title. The video ends promising a dawn of a new day for WCW and ends with Page and Sting face to face from the conclusion of this past Monday on Nitro with the title belt in the background. Tonight the WCW World Heavyweight Title will be decided when Sting defends against the number one contender Diamond Dallas Page. Dusty talks about having mentored Page and seeing the talent he had long before anyone in WCW had and how proud he is that tonight Page gets his shot at immortality. Also tonight, Bret “Hitman” Hart will go one-on-one with Big Sexy Kevin Nash, the new apparent leader of the nWo. Jeff talks about the years it took to get here, how many opportunities they thought they had that was denied to them. Jeff is able to score some offense including a back drop to Taylor over the ropes and then a sit out bomb to Finlay for a two count. But, when he is about to tag Matt, Taylor drags Matt off the apron. Finlay goes for the Tombstone but Jeff is able to reverse it and nail Finlay with the move. Finlay starts crawling to Taylor as Jeff tries to reach Matt. Finlay makes the tag first and Jeff reaches for his brother but Taylor has his leg. Jeff spins around and does a back spin kick sending the Brit to the mat. Jeff leaps forward and tags in Matt who comes in like a house of fire dropping both Taylor and Finlay. Every time Booker gets close to tagging, the Steiners prevent him from doing so. Rick nails Booker with a Steinerline so powerful that Booker falls backwards over the top rope and crashes to the floor. On the floor, Scott drops him with a T-Bone while Rick distracts Stevie Ray. Back in the ring, Rick covers and nearly scores a pinfall before Booker is able to power out. </p><p> </p><p> The tide turns when Scott puts Booker on his shoulders and Rick goes up top for the top rope bulldog but, Booker is able to turn it into a victory roll just as Rick flies off and he hits dead air and crashes to the mat. A German-Bridge suplex gets two but, Benoit makes a mistake when he goes for the diving headbutt too early and misses. </p><p> </p><p> Douglas takes over and scores several near falls on Benoit before working on the Crippler’s knee in preparation for the stolen figure four. Jarrett finally escapes the Sandman and makes the tag to Windham who along with Bradshaw turn the tables the keep Sandman in their own corner. This works until Sandman makes a break for the corner after double clotheslining the Blackjacks and tags in Taz but Jarrett had the referee distracted and he didn’t see the tag. Jarrett and the Blackjacks get Sandman back in their corner and work him over. </p><p> </p><p> Jarrett gets back in the ring and is setting up for his Reverse Russian Leg Sweep when Sandman mule kicks him with a low blow, unseen by the referee and dives to tag in RVD. Van Dam is on fire as he blasts both Blackjacks then goes to work on Jarrett, flooring him time and against. He hits several high flying moves followed by Rolling Thunder. His partners know what he has planned as he begins climbing to the top and Taz and Sandman rush around the ring and begin brawling with the Blackjacks. As the referee turns his attention to the outside a masked figure jumps the railing and climbs to the apron to shove RVD off the top, crashing to the mat. The earlier brawl is back on but it’s Austin who’s the aggressor. Picking up Austin he shoves him into the ring and follows, going to work by battering the champion with heavy strikes. Vader keeps the attacks up but when he misses a running clothesline, Austin finds a second wind and backs Vader up into the corner with punches, kicks, and chops before unleashing a barrage of stomps, stopping momenttarily to flip him off, befotre finishing with one final stomp. Austin moves to the opposite corner and charges in but Vader shows surprising speed and springs up, flattening Austin. He then drops a few heacvy elbows before dragging Austin to the corner for a Vader Bomb. Vader climbs to the second rope, bounding for a moment before jumping off but Austin moves and Vader bellyflops. When he’s half way down the ramp the stage explodes in fire as Kane’s music plays and he and Paul Bearer come out. The brothers enter the ring together and to say that the Nation is a little freaked out is an understatement but Farooq holds them together. The action is back and forth with the Nation hammering away at the Undertaker while Kane waits for the tag. Farooq shows his strength by picking up the Undertaker to deliver a Dominator but Undertaker kicks out at two. They continue to work him over with constant tags but eventually the Undertaker breaks free from Kama and makes the tag. Kane comes in and is unstoppable. He chokeslams Kama, D’lo, Rock, and Farooq in succession before charging at the first two and sending them over the top rope with a double clothesline. He follows them to the outside and when D’Lo and Kama stagger to their feet he grabs both by the throat and delivers a double chokeslam through the announcer’s table. Turning his attention back to the ring, he climbs back in and immediately goes to work on Farooq. When he’s sufficiently worn down Kane tags the Undertaker back in. As the Undertaker steps through the ropes Kane throws a crippling right hand to his temple. Undertaker is staggered and catches another. He can barely stay on his feet when Kane scoops him up and delivers a Tombstone. He then tosses Farooq on top of his brother and looms in the ring as the referee who’s looking terrified counts to three.</p><p> </p><p> <span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>Winners by Pinfall: The Nation of Domination </strong></span></p><p><span style="color:#FF0000;"> </span><span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>Grade: 86 </strong></span></p></div></blockquote> <p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img alt="5onGaIq.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/5onGaIq.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> <img alt="vG2xh4U.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/vG2xh4U.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="TIKf0Zl.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/TIKf0Zl.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="4DHjTz0.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/4DHjTz0.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> <em>As the Nation clears the ring, Kane isn’t done. The dislike between the men is evident but thanks to some underhanded tactics Michaels takes control and with the help of Chyna and Helmsley. Hart is punished for the next few minutes but when Helmsley whips him into the ropes Hart reverses it and upon Helmsley’s return jumps up and hits a hurricanrana. Crawling to his corner he makes the tag to Piper which Helmsley noticed when he gets back to his knees and suddenly he has his hands up asking for a timeout. Piper seems to have it going his way when he telegraphs a backdrop and Michaels makes him pay with an elbow to the back of his head. Dragging Piper to his corner, D-Generation X double, and at times triple teams Piper over the next couple minutes. Piper breaks free when, unseen by the official he hits a low blow on Helmsley and slowly makes his way back to his corner where he tags in Hart.</p><p> </p><p> Hart hits the ring and immediately begins wearing out Helmsley with a series of snap suplexes, and dropkicks. Helmsley stumbles to his corner and tags Michaels back in but Helmsley doesn’t leave, instead they double team Hart which brings Piper back in and all four men are at it. As Helmsley and Piper tumble out of the ring and Hart has the upper hand on Michaels, Hart runs to the ropes when Chyna trips him. He turns on her and grabs her by the hair. The referee is fighting to release her when she clubs Hart in the side of the head with a forearm. He lets go of her, staggering back holding the side of his head and when he turns, Michaels hits Sweet Chin Music. Meanwhile Chyna runs around and shoves Piper from behind sending him into the ring post.
