WCW97';- Where The Big Boys Play

With the Monday Night Wars in full swing, momentum is firmly in the corner of WCW as they continue their streak of ratings victories over WWF.

As we near the end of 1997, WWF continue their build towards the annual Survivor Series PPV while WCW has just shy of 2 months left before presenting what is set to be their biggest Starrcade in company history. WWF has begun to move towards an edgier product and have great potential for the future in upcoming stars like Steve Austin & The Rock as they look to challenge WCW for the spot as the #1 company in the world.

WCW, having assembled what may well be the most talented roster in Professional Wrestling history, looks to have an equally bright future. However, rumours remain rife that the backstage atmosphere is bordering on toxic with guys in the company fed up being buried by locker room politicians as the atmosphere threatens to fracture the organisation.

Can the company keep a lid on backstage bickering and maintain their superiority over McMahon and co.? Only time will tell...

So, we're using The Mod Squad's 97' mod - Montreal Prelude it's been a few years since I started a diary attempt and, although I enjoyed it, it was incredibly short-lived and I was struggling to find the time to commit. This one will have a very simplistic, minimalist approach. I haven't seen many diaries going about for this time period with WCW. I know Crossface had one going and likely a few others and I hope to be able to provide something as readable as the did. It's never going to be up to the standard of diaries like Beejus, The Lloyd, Eisen-Verse, Uncrewed and Angeldelayette etc. but I'll certainly try.

Harlem Heat - I go with the Heat here, but the FoF really deserve a strong push as well if you intend on building the tag division. They were a very fun midcard level team. Benoit and Malenko - Just on a bigger level than their opponents. Goldberg - On his way up as Landel is circling his career down. Raven - I really liked Martel's brief WCW run though, he still had it for sure. Eddie Guerrero - On his way to a Cruiser title rematch at WW3, so win here. Randy Savage - nWo rule applies, that being Ric Flair never goes over the nWo.

Focus on Flair looking to exact revenge on Hennig and, of course, Hollywood Hogan's actions last night at Halloween Havoc chaining Piper to the cage and beating him down. - They turn their attention to the ring for the first match of the evening. (84/B+) Segment 2; Ultimo Dragon vs Juventud Guerrera - These 2 got the night off to a great start with some classic lively Cruiserweight action. - The bout was fairly even for a great period with some strong mat wrestling throughout. - Juventud went to the top rope but Dragon was ready, countered with a top rope hurricanrana and then locked in the Dragon Sleeper for the victory. Winner; Ultimo Dragon (71/C+) Segment 3; - Gene Okerlund interviews Ric Flair - "Curt Hennig, you used to be 'perfect'. Now, without the nWo by your side, you're nothing and nobody and your days as United States Champ are numbered. But tonight is about the Macho man... and Savage!... Once I'm done with you and you're left screaming in that Figure Four Leg Lock begging to be set free... I'll make sure there's enough left in my tank to give Elizabeth the chance to go on Space Mountain and see if I can't make her scream and beg too. Woo!" (92/A) Segment 4; Harlem Heat vs Faces of Fear - Good tag team action in the ring here with a good portion of it being carried by Booker T. - A swift scissor kick was enough to put down The Barbarian and give Harlem Heat the victory. Winner; Harlem Heat (75/B-) Segment 5; Benoit & Malenko vs Blue Bloods - Excellent in-ring action was on the menu in this bout between some technically gifted combatants. - The Blue Bloods have experience teaming and used it to their advantage with some cheap heat tactics. Malenko took a beating but a double clothesline left he & Regal on the mat. - Benoit received the hot tag and went to work. Cleared Regal from the ring and dropkicks Taylor to the mat. A flying headbutt later and Charles Robinson counts to 3. Winners; Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko (76/B-) Segment 6; - Bischoff and Hogan enter the ring to the usual nWo fanfare from the crowd. Typical heel promo from Hogan focusing on his match with Piper at last nights Halloween Havoc. - "Last night, I beat the Rowdy one so badly that he's currently in a hospital bed licking his wounds brother. He may have won the match but I play the long game, Jack, and so I lost a battle but I'll always win the war! So, Stinger, I hope you were paying close attention to last nights actions because I'm gonna call your bluff. Next week, in Las Vegas, I'll be here in the ring, Jack, with a contract for you to sign to give you that precious title match you want so badly. You wanna play with Hollywood and the nWo? Bring it on, brother, because when the God of Wrestling kicks your butt and you go down to Hollywood... it will be... for life!" (99/A*) Segment 7; Goldberg vs Buddy Landell - Goldberg continues his excellent run since debuting in WCW. Classic squash. A few powerslams, Spear & Jackhammer and it's another win for Goldberg. Winner; Goldberg (56/C-) Segment 8; - Hall & Nash make an appearance. Usual Outsider shtick! Hall continues to berate Zbyzko while Nash continues to hype himself as the one true Giant in WCW. (99/A*) Segment 9; Raven vs Rick Martel - Raven offers Martel the chance to save himself from embarrassment and join his flock. Martel laughs it off. - A solid encounter ensues. Raven's flock continue to try and distract Martel throughout but he maintains his composure and continues to get the better of Raven. - Kidman climbs to the top rope. Martel pushes him away and turns to kick Raven. Raven catches his leg, flips Martel backwards as he falls on the top rope and is hung there to dry. Raven puts his arms around him and hits the Evenflow DDT to secure the victory. Winner; Raven (75/B-) Segments 10 & 11; Eddie Guerrero vs Chris Jericho - These 2 have excellent chemistry in the ring and always deliver a brilliant match. - Jericho plays the consummate 'never say die' babyface wonderfully while Eddie's devious, Egomaniacal heel contrasts nicely. - Jericho sits on the top rope as Eddie catches him with a swift boot to leave him dazed. Eddie locks himself in for a hurricanrana but Jericho locks the arms in behind is legs and has him in the Liontamer. Eddie manages to wriggle free and make it to his feet as Jericho sprints towards him. Guerrero's swift reflexes allow him to slip through Jericho's legs and roll him up in a schoolboy. As the ref counts, Eddie latches his legs onto the ropes for leverage and secures the 3 count as the ref doesn't notice. Winner; Eddie Guerrero (77/B-) POST MATCH - Jericho is visibly frustrated but offers his hand to Eddie. Eddie ponders for a second before delivering a swift low blow kick to Jericho and then slapping him in the face. Guerrero gives a sly grin and walks away. (71/C+) Segments 12 - 15; Ric Flair vs Randy Savage - Flair takes his time to enter, doing so in an elaborate fashion that only the Nature Boy can. (93/A) - These 2 ring veterans showed that despite them both getting up there in years, they can still bring it if required. A lot of back & forth in this one and the 2 told a great story in the ring. Savage used having Elizabeth by ringside as a distraction to his advantage and gained the upper hand on Flair. - Flair rolls to the outside as Savage goes to follow and grab a chair. Elizabeth has the attention of Randy Anderson. The crowd 'pop' as Savage pulls the chair back over his head but DDP appears over the barricade and nails the Macho Man with a Diamond Cutter. Flair makes it to his feet but he is quickly sent crashing to the ground as Hennig attacks him from behind with the US title belt. Hennig hops the barricade as DDP follows while Elizabeth tends to the fallen Savage. Anderson begins counting and eventually reaches '10' so calls for the bell. Winner; Draw via Double Count Out (79/B) POST MATCH - Liz manages to help Savage to his feet. He's joined by Hogan, Hall, Nash, Bagwell & Bischoff as they all start putting the boots to Flair. Having had enough of this, Zybyzko throws down his headset and heads towards ringside. As he stands in the rampway to measure how he's going to do this, The Giant appears from the Nitro set and heads down with him. - The nWo realise what's happening and turn their attention to the inbound duo. (90/A) - They brace themselves as both parties collide. The Giant and Larry do their best but the numbers game is too strong. The crowd roars however as they see Sting descend from the rafters. Sting simply, once again, points his bat at Hogan and the nWo back away up the ramp. Giant & Zybyzko get their bearings and join Sting in the ring as they gesture towards Nash & Hall, respectively. Hogan can be heard screaming "I'm not scared. You don't scare me. I'll see you next week!" (99/A*) End show. (87/B+) Segment 2; Disco Inferno vs Konnan (TV Title Match) - A title match always provides a hot start to any broadcast and these 2 put on a decent show. - Konnan used plenty of cheap heat tactics to gain the advantage and looked for certain to become the new TV Champ. - A moment of lost focus & arrogance though cost him as Disco got a quick roll-up and the 3 count Winner; Disco Inferno (Retains TV Title) (64/C) Segment 3; Kidman vs Jushin Liger - Both competitors put on a solid display of in-ring action and showed what the Cruiserweights are all about. However, neither man is over with the crowd so there wasn't a lot of heat. - Liger makes an immediate impact and takes the victory with the Liger Bomb. Winner; Jushin Liger (61/C) Segment 4; Outsiders Promo - Hall & Nash pander to the crowd as the fans eat up everything nWo. - "Yo, Vegas. While we're out here we might as well take a little survey. Who's the biggest big man in professional wrestling today? Is it that big lump of lard, The Giant? Or do we think it's this big, blonde B****** standing right here?(Fans 'pop' for Nash) Survey says, another one for the bad guys." - The duo continue to run down The Giant, DDP, Zbyzsko and pretty much anyone they want before leaving. (97/A*) Segments 5 & 6; Booker T vs Curt Hennig - Booker doesn't see a whole lot of singles action but is clear he has a future in it as he kept things even with Hennig. - The Perfect one began to prove too strong and, with the usual nWo cheap heat tactics, was gaining a clear advantage over one half of the Harlem Heat. - Hennig set Booker up for the Perfect Plex and nailed it but, before the ref could count to 3, the Nature Boy appeared and started laying into Hennig. Winner; Curt Hennig via DQ (77/B-) POST MATCH - Flair continued his assault on the US Champ. He went to grab a chair but Hennig gained his bearings and ran to the back as the Nature Boy chased in hot pursuit. (90/A) Segments 7 & 8; Goldberg vs Kid Kash - Goldberg is on a hot streak of domination that we haven't seen before in WCW. - Kid Kash never stood a chance as Goldberg obliterated him in short fashion. Winner; Goldberg (61/C) POST MATCH - As the match ends, Mongo McMichael appears in the rampway with a chair in hand. Begins calling on Goldberg and shouting that he wants his Super Bowl ring back. - Goldberg sees this, makes a beeline for Mongo and damn near spears him out of his boots before just walking through to the back. (55/C-) Segment 9; Hogan & Bischoff promo - Bischoff plays the hype man and heavily puts over Hogan as the greatest thing in wrestling history. Hypes that nobody can put fear into Hogan. Especially not a clown in face paint. Hogan takes the mic. "Sting, I know you're here in this building somewhere, man. All you need to know is that I'll be in this ring at the end of the night with that contract you want to sign so badly. But, brother, it's not too late to back out. All you've got to do is come out here tonight and bow down to the greatness of Hollywood and all will be forgiven. Because if you don't, I'm gonna make your life hell, brah!" (99/A*) Segments 10 & 11; Los Guerrero's vs Chris Jericho & Rey Mysterio Jr. -These 2 teams put on an excellent encounter filled with exciting in-ring action. - There was a real heat to the match, especially given the recent events with Jericho & Eddie on last week's Nitro. - Those 2 ended up getting distracted with each other and fighting together on the outside. Eddie ended up getting the better of Jericho. Meanwhile in the ring, Mysterio's offence proved too much for Chavo and he got the win with the Springboard Splash before Eddie could stop the 3 count Winners; Chris Jericho & Rey Mysterio Jr.(78/B) POST MATCH - Eddie quickly puts the boots to Mysterio as the match comes to an end. He grabs a table from under the ring and sets Mysterio up on it. Chavo manages to see Jericho coming into the ring to aid Mysterio and sends him crashing from the apron into the barricade outside. Eddie hits the top rope and Frog Splashes Rey through the table. Eddie makes it clear that he wants that Cruiserweight title back. (71/C+) Segment 12; Buff Bagwell vs Chris Benoit - These 2 men put on a strong showing in the semi-main event of the evening. - Buff has some stuff but is clearly a weaker member of the nWo as Benoit proved to be too strong. - Buff hits the rope and goes for a flying clothesline but Benoit catches Bagwell's arm in the air and brings him to the mat, locking in the Crossface. Bagwell taps. Winner; Chris Benoit (79/B) Segments 13 & 14; DDP & The Giant vs The Outsiders - The main events of Nitro tend to be known for their star power more than the in-ring action but this match certainly didn't slouch on it. - The crowd were hot for this one and The Outsiders were strong with some smart tag-team work. - Giant got the hot-tag on DDP as he went to work on Hall. Against the ropes, DDP didn't see that Nash tagged himself in on Hall. He whipped Hall to the other side of the ring sending Hall crashing into The Giant with both men crashing to the floor. Nash saw the opportunity to strike, stepped into the ring and quickly clobbered DDP with stiff shots to the head. One Jacknife Powerbomb later and it's over. Winner; The Outsiders (83/B+) POST MATCH - Nash celebrates his win in the ring. Unbeknownst to him, however, was Larry Zbyzsko sneaking through the crowd and hopping the barricade. He entered the ring and caught Nash with a low blow bringing the big man to his knees as he rolled to the outside. Zbyzsko grabbed a mic. "Listen up, Hall, you coward. I'm fed up of you ducking me. The whole world wants to see the match, so don't let your fear get the better of you and do the right thing. Step into this ring, sign this contract and we'll take care of our business like men, instead of me having to chase you." - Hall stares at Zybyzsko but just grabs Nash and walks away up the ramp (95/A) Segments 15, 16 & 17; Hogan & Sting contract confrontation - After the commercial break, the ring is set up with a table in the middle as Hogan & Bischoff enter the arena. - The 2 stand about and pander to the crowd before the lights in the arena go out. A single spotlight shines on the steps of the arena seating area as Sting slowly makes his way through the crowd. He hops the barricade and steps into the ring as the spotlight continues to shine, lighting only the ring up. The fans are hyped! (99/A*) - Hogan & Sting simply stare at each other. Hogan signs the contract for the Starrcade match and stands back. He tries to remain composed but a slight element of fear can be seen overcoming him. - Sting steps forward, places his bat on the table and signs the contract. The match is set! - As Sting places the pen back down, Bischoff quickly grabs Stings bat and a mic and simply says; "Well... now, you've sealed your fate!" The whole arena lights up as normal to show all ranks of the nWo standing on the outside of the ring. (100/A*) - Hall, Nash, Savage, Hennig, Bagwell, Syxx, Norton & Bagwell all step into the ring to join Hogan & Bischoff in having Sting surrounded. Then... all 10 men strike. - Savage blows crumple Sting to the floor as everyone starts putting the boots to him. They rip off his trenchcoat as Bischoff stars jabbing him in the ribs with the baseball bat. - Stars of WCW including Flair, Luger & The Steiners head to the ring but all are cut off by the nWo members, excluding Hogan & Bischoff. - The WCW stars look on helplessly as Hogan is whipping Sting with his belt and leaving the Icon a helpless, bloodied mess. (99/A*) End show.
