The History of Mixed Martial Arts

The History of MMA:

I edited the original game database so that everything is wiped clean and that the game starts in 1987. Only one company is active at that time, American Fighting Federation (AFF), which I will be playing as. I start with no money, no popularity and no fighters! At the starting point only 7 fighters are active in the whole world, so this isn’t even enough to hold an 8-man tournament. As soon as one more fighter enters the game we’ll be ready to go!

Database info:

The Game starts in January 1987.

All fighters’ Name Value has been reset to 0.

All fighter Records have been reset.

All fighter Rankings have been reset.

All fighters’ Experience has been reset to 0.

All fighters’ health condition has been restored to 100%.

Every company except AFF has yet to open at random after 1988.

Popularity of the normally active companies has been lowered.

All events names follow the format “Numerically With Main Event Name”.

Hall of Fames, Contracts, Belts, Belt Lineages, Broadcast teams, Injury History, Non-family relationships, TV Shows, etc. have all been removed.

All regions have “MMA Regulation” set to “Unregulated” to reflect realism in 1987.

Special Game Settings:

Generated Fighters: Disabled (Might enable this again much later.)

Financial Difficulty: Major Overall Penalty

10 Point Must System.

The ref can separate fighters when they’re inactive.

There’s no 10 count when knocked down.

Everything else is legal!

It was a historic day as this is the first mixed martial arts event ever held. Eight fighters will have their names remembered for ever and ever for being a part of this. The event was an eight-man tournament that featured men of all sizes and all kind of fighting-backgrounds. The competitors were: Dan Halvorsen, Ricardo Fernandes, Manol Sirakov, Cliff McAddam, George Laurent, Mantas Andreyev, Francesco Marazzina and Gustavo Bautista. The winner was George Laurent who defeated Dan Halvorsen in the final after first plowing through Mantas Andreyev and Francesco Marazzina.

I like the set up and the presentation too. Will be interesting to see how the game world diverges from the default database.

One thing I'd like you to consider is to make a more old-school rules set. 10-point must and 3x5 is way too modern for a game about how no holds barred turned into mixed martial arts.

The first UFC had no time limits, unfortunately there's no option like that but I'd suggest 60-minute fights and decisions based on the entire contest. Time limits first appeared on UFC 5 with a 20-minute limit for the quarter finals and 30-minute limit for the semis.

I was considering automatic draws since early on there really were no judges but that might break tournaments, I honestly don't know what would happen if a semi or quarter-final would go to a draw.

I considered increasing the length of the fights the way you mentioned before starting the game, but the problem would be that the fighters would be completely gassed out in the semifinals and final which would give worse quality fights and unfair advantages for fighters that had an easy opponent in the earlier rounds. I'm allready too far ahead in my game for changing it anyway.

The second event also followed the no-weight limit tournament format. A few fighters from AFF 1 returned for another shot at glory: AFF 1 winner George Laurent, Manol Sirakov, Ricardo Fernandes and Gustavo Bautista. They were joined by fresh faces Travis Jones, Rick Stanley, Phil Verdigree and Taufik Wijaya. George Laurent solidifies his status as “Mister Mixed Martial Arts” after defeating everyone in his path. “The Welsh Warrior” surprisingly made it to the finals after unexpectedly beating Ricardo Fernandes by Split Decision in the semifinals.

A month after the AFF 2 event the news came out that [#1] George Laurent (6-0), the face of the sport at the moment, would have to spend a year in jail after being convicted for assault charges. Bad news for AFF and the image of the MMA sport as a whole. Taufik Wijaya (0-1) shared the same fate and also ends up doing the same amount of time for the same type of crime. It appears that they didn’t leave all their aggression in the cage when they fought each other…

AFF 3: THE AMERICAN DREAM

Friday, Week 2, October 1987

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 12 – Gate: $584

Another tournament was held in October at AFF 3 which again featured some familiar faces (Mantas Andreyev (0-1), Dan Halvorsen (2-1), Francesco Marazzina (1-1) and Cliff McAddam(0-1)) and some debuting fighters (Walter May, Lars Bohlin, Seigo Tsuda and Greg Atteveld). The name of the event hints at the return of Dan Halvorsen, who was expecting to get far again. He drew a very small guy from Sweden in the first round, so it looked as if that would be easy. The little guy, Lars Bohlin, proved to be a very good dominant fighter and ended up winning the whole thing. Submission artist Francesco Marazzina was the one he had to beat in the final. This wasn’t the most exciting event with only two fights not going the distance. I’m surprised that Mantas Andreyev hasn’t been able to win a fight yet.

The last event of the year featured the biggest (and most prolific) upset of the year as well. Gunnar Nilsson was defeated by the much smaller Ricardo Fernandes. It was a bit of a fluke finish as it was ended because of a cut. Fernandes only hit five light punches in total the whole fight, but one of those sufficed to make Nilsson bleed. Besides the debuting Nilsson we also had Geoff Cahill and Indriyanto Setyo Nugroho fighting for the first time. Gustavo Bautista, Greg Atteveld, Rick Stanley and Cliff McAddam all returned for another shot at eternal glory, but to no avail. I expected better from Rick Stanley, who has a 0-2 record now after losing both fights decisively.

Another event in the books. We are still continuing with the tournament format, but that might come to an end soon. Two new faces participated this time. Jim Carpenter, probably the most well rounded MMA fighter in the world right now and Mac Fuller, an exciting fighter that comes from a boxing background. The other fighters all had at least one AFF match in the books before, the most notable being AFF 1 finalist Dan Halvorsen and AFF 2 finalist Travis Jones. Halvorsen managed to repeat that success and was able to reach the final again. Travis Jones got eliminated by Jim Carpenter who ended up winning the tournament. Six out of eight fights were decision victories, yet there were still some exciting matches.

Tragedy strikes! Geoff “Die Hard” Cahill has died at the age of 28 following an accident. Cahill was a participant on in the AFF 4 Tournament last year. He had a 1-1 record, with a win over Rick Stanley and a loss against Gunnar Nilsson. He showed some potential in those fights. Who knows how far he could’ve gotten in the sport?

[Note: In the original database he had a 49-25 record, retiring in the year 2000, so it’s safe to say his career looks very different here. His nickname is also rather funny given he’s the first character to die in the game.]

AFF 6: BOHLIN vs. FERNANDES

Saturday, Week 4, April 1988

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 16 – Gate: $779

After having five events that only featured eight-man tournaments we decided that the format has become somewhat stale. People want to see the best going against the best that means the likes of George Laurent, Lars Bohlin, Ricardo Fernandes and Jim Carpenter competing against each other. Therefor we have decided to introduce a new championship title, namely the AFF Allweight Championship. Since George Laurent is still in jail and Jim Carpenter is still recovering from the last event we had Lars Bohlin and Ricardo Fernandes battle for it. Bohlin won it dominantly after a quick takedown and some ground and pound. The rest of the event still had a tournament although it was announced that for now it would be the last using this format. Gunnar Nilsson, who surprisingly (and perhaps undeservedly) lost to Fernandes in the AFF 4 final return to claim eternal glory. He reached the final with relative ease, but got immediately caught in a submission hold by exciting newcomer Fernando Amaro in the finals. The matches were pretty exciting and I think this was our best show so far.

AFF 7: CARPENTER vs. AMARO

Saturday, Week 4, June 1988

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 19 – Gate: $924

Like we mentioned last time we no longer use the one night tournament format. The only logical main event to make was AFF 5 winner Jim Carpenter against AFF 6 winner Fernando Amaro. The winner of this fight will most likely be the next challenger for the AFF Allweight Championship title, currently held by Lars Bohlin. The match itself proved to be rather boring and ended in a decision victory for Fernando Amaro. He proved to be slightly better than Carpenter today, but it’s a bit surprising that the decision was unanimous.

In the undercard we tried to have competitive matches to flesh out the rankings and see where everyone stands. Mac Fuller beat Travis Jones, as expected. Nugroho had somewhat of a surprise victory over the much bigger Manol Sirakov. This match was very exciting and received “Fight of the Night” and “Submission of the Night” honors. This is the third time out of six fights at four different events (so 3/4) that Manol Sirakov has won “Fight of the Night”. Quite remarkable. Cliff McAddam and Mantas Andreyev are one defeat away from being released from their contract. Losing five matches in a row is the threshold for that.

Results:

Robun Yamazaki (1-0) def. Veeti Kuqi (0-1) by Unanimous Decision – Decent

[16] Phil Verdigree (2-2) def. Milton Harvey (0-1) by KO (Punch) in Rd 2, 0:40 – Good [KOTN]

[15] Gustavo Bautista (2-3) def. [19] Cliff McAddam (0-4) by TKO (Strikes) in Rd 3, 2:58 – Decent

[21] Rick Stanley (1-2) def. [23] Mantas Andreyev (0-4) by TKO (Strikes) in Rd 1, 3:43 -Good

[20] Indriyanto Setyo Nugroho (1-1) def. [13] Manol Sirakov (2-4) by Submission (Armbar) in Rd 2, 3:21 – Great [FOTN] [sOTN]

[8] Mac Fuller (2-1) def. [14] Travis Jones (2-3) by Unanimous Decision – Good

[3] Fernando Amaro (4-0) def. [4] Jim Carpenter (3-1) by Unanimous Decision - Decent

I am making around $3,500 profit per show. I might try changing this for one show and see what the effect is. I'm a bit scared of wasting all the money I have saved up on one show however.

AFF 8: BOHLIN vs. AMARO

Saturday, Week 4, August 1988

As promised Fernando Amaro would get his chance at the AFF Allweight Championship title that was held by the undefeated Lars Bohlin. You can scratch the undefeated part now since Fernando Amaro won the match by TKO in round 4! Up until then the fighters were evenly matched.

In the undercard we watched Gunnar Nilsson returning back to form after his loss against Amaro at AFF 6. He defeated Mac Fuller by decision, although it wasn’t expected to be this close given that Fuller is pretty one-dimensional. Eugene Clough pulled off quite an upset defeating the more experienced AFF 4 winner Ricardo Fernandes by controlling him against the cage for pretty much the whole fight. We also witnessed dominant debut victories from Jack Cobblepot, Zaco and Tsuramatsu Inoue. Especially Zaco looked impressive earning submission and fight of the night honors. It will be interesting to see how far they will get.

Interesting, for some reason I anticipated Bohlin winning. Good to see some successful debuts though, some big names there based on the actual future of the game. Looking forward to James Foster's debut, hopefully he turns into the star he is in the default database, as well the return of Halvorsen. Thinking Laurent wins and sets himself up for a title shot, which I also wouldn't be surprised to see him win.
