AFF 9: LAURENT vs. BAUTISTA

Saturday, Week 4, October 1988

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 25 – Gate: $1,216

At AFF 9 we finally saw the much anticipated return of AFF 1 and AFF 2 winner George Laurent who spent a year in jail. He got booked against the #5 ranked Gustavo Bautista who came off an impressive TKO victory against Cliff McAddam. Apparently Laurent needed no time to shake off the rust as he only needed a little over 4 minutes to finish the fight by TKO and picking up his third “Knockout of the Night” award in just as many events! Up next for him is a shot at the title against Amaro, which will definitely be our biggest billed fight yet!

Phil Verdigree beat the odds and defeated Rick Stanley in a slugfest. Halvorsen and Marazzina put on a technical display with Halvorson edging it. Wijaya also got released from jail and restarted with a victory over Cliff McAddam who has now lost five fights in a row. He has been released from duty. Chances of him returning as an improved fighter later on are slim as he’s already 37 years old. The 22 year old James Foster, who just won a gold medal at the Olympics in wrestling, also made his debut. It was an impressive victory over Manol Sirakov. Kudos to Sirakov for lasting longer than one round. Another first as we finally watched Mantas Andreyev turn his luck around after four straight defeats. He had his back against the wall and was one loss away from getting the sack. Lower down the card we have an “Upset of the Year” candidate as the debuting Ralf Puce defeated Greg Atteveld who was a -1030 to +820 betting favorite! And just to be complete Walter May won his match against Monty Olivier, another newbie. All in all it was our best event yet!

Results:

[24] Walter May (2-2) def. Monty Olivier (0-1) by Submission (Arm Triangle) in Rd 1, 3:53 – Good

Ralf Puce (1-0) def. [21] Greg Atteveld (2-5) by TKO (Strikes) in Rd 1, 3:17 – Good

Mantas Andreyev (1-4) def. [19] Veeti Kuqi (0-2) by Submission (Guillotine) in Rd 1, 4:01 – Great [FOTN] [sOTN]

James Foster (1-0) def. [22] Manol Sirakov (2-5) by TKO (Strikes) in Rd 2, 0:29 – Great

[18] Taufik Wijaya (1-1) def. Cliff McAddam (0-5) by Unanimous Decision – Average

[11] Dan Halvorsen (5-3) def. [16] Francesco Marazzina (4-4) by Unanimous Decision – Good

[13] Phil Verdigree (3-2) def. [7] Rick Stanley (1-3) by Unanimous Decision – Good

[2] George Laurent (7-0) def. [5] Gustavo Bautista (2-4) by TKO (Strikes) in Rd 1, 4:03 – Decent [KOTN]

Bence Bodor (0-2) vs. Travis Jones (2-3)

[19] Tsuramatsu Inoue (1-1) vs. [20] Mac Fuller (2-2)

[13] Zaco (1-0) vs. [14] Eugene Clough (1-1)

Another interesting debut coming up with Stafford Alois, I will be routing for him personally. But yeah, some great results in the last event, Foster looks like he is going to be very impressive for you. Laurent Vs. Amaro will be an interesting fight when that happens! Would you like us to predict, or are you just posting the upcoming fights just to show whats up next?

Following this, really enjoyable read so far. Presentation is just right, not too much to read, but enough info to digest to get a feel for things.

+1 for requesting more tournaments - they move things along in the game really well and with a limited number of fighters in the game world so far makes it really meaningful, establishing newer fighters or deciding number one contenders etc.

Who knew Laurent was such a beast!

It's probably hard to predict since you can't see the skills of most fighters that I'm using in the original database as most of them have retired. I mainly write them down for myself because you can't see the ranking of the fighter in the event overview. Maybe I'll leave them out of the reports again since they have no real added value.

Following this, really enjoyable read so far. I will probably hold some more when I implement new weight classes to determine the champions. The problem I have with them is that they use up 7 match spots which could be used for progressing other fighters' careers. I have ideas to later on in the game make side-events called "AFF Throwback X" which will follow the tournament format like my first events.

I was also surprised to see Laurent do so well. He's a good striker with good takedown and submission defence, but nothing more than that if you look at his skills. If Fernando Marazzina had been a light-heavyweight instead of a featherweight I think he would easily have won the first two tournaments.

CARPENTER vs. NILSSON

Saturday, Week 4, December 1988

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 31 – Gate: $1,508

Our last event of the year 1988 and already the 10th ever! Not really the biggest poster of the year as Carpenter lost his last match (against the current champion Fernando Amaro) and Nilsson hasn’t really showed that he can be counted among the elite yet. The pre-event rankings proved to be true as Carpenter won the match by submission and almost gets himself back into the title picture. What’s most likely next for him is a match against Zaco (2-0), Lars Bohlin (4-1) or Jack Cobblepot (2-0).

Zaco and Cobblepot both fought tonight as well defeating their opponents, Eugene Clough and Nugroho respectively, with ease. Mac Fuller continues his alternating win-loss pattern and defeated Tsuramatsu Inoue in an exciting match. Travis Jones snapped out of his 3-match losing streak by defeating Bence Bodor, who has now lost 3 in a row and is nearing the danger zone. The biggest “WOW!” moment was newcomer Stafford Alois knocking out Milton Harvey with a head kick. This is the first time this ever happened. He just needed a minute to do so. Impressive stuff, especially compared to the previous match. A borefest between two heavyweights Harvey and Analysis that ended in a decision. The opening bout was a very close split decision victory for Ricardo Fernandes over Robun Yamazaki.

Apparently our little company has been watched by someone from overseas as a new company has opened up with pretty much the same concept as ours in London! There are a few differences however, they will have weight divisions pretty much as is the case in boxing as they think it adds professionalism to the sport. Who knows we might learn a thing or two from them. It’s expected to take a while until they hold their first event as Great Britain has no free fighters at the moment. All those willing to don the gloves have moved to the United States to compete in AFF.

AMARO vs. LAURENT

Saturday, Week 4, February 1989

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 30 – Gate: $1,800

Finally the fight every follower of MMA had been waiting for, the AFF Allweight Champion Fernando Amaro (5-0) against AFF 1 and AFF 2 winner George Laurent (7-0). The match had “Mid Level National” interest, which is huge for a company like ours. The fight was pretty close with Laurent clearly winning the first two rounds, even knocking down Fernando Amaro in the process. Eventually the gas tank became empty and Amaro took over, winning the striking game in the last three rounds.

We also had James Foster (2-0) continuing his road towards the top. He needed just two punches to knock down Ralf Puce (1-1) before jumping on him to finish him off. Mantas Andreyev (2-4) is now on a winning streak and climbs to the 4th place in the ranking after making Taufik Wijaya (1-2) tap out in the first round. Walter May (3-2) scored an unexpected win over Francesco Marazzina (4-5) who has completely fallen off the ladder after losing his third match in a row. The match was won after 3:16 in the first round. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin would be proud. He still has time to work on his game as he’s only 23 years old. In the other matches we had no less than 6 fighters making their debut and winning their match. The coolest finish was Eijiro Yanagita catching Seigo Tsuda in an armbar from his back after being dropped by punches.

Wow, impressed with Amaro picking up the win there!

Foster getting another win and a lot of interesting debuts too with familiar faces!

If Andrayev can keep this up, he has to be the official underdog that we are all going to root for!

I appreciate the 3:16 Stone Cold reference in 1989 haha.

Awesome stuff, nice to see attendance slowly trickle up, good it up!

CARPENTER vs. BOHLIN

Saturday, Week 4, April 1989

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 40 – Gate: $1,947

Another match that needed to happen was AFF 5 winner Jim Carpenter versus AFF 3 winner Lars Bohlin. Carpenter was seen as the favorite given the size advantage and the impressive victory against Gunnar Nilsson. Bohlin’s last match was his AFF Allweight title loss against the reigning champion Fernando Amaro. In the end Bohlin came out on top on all three of the judges’ scorecards. He landed more punches and was able to take Carpenter down twice during the match. Up next for Bohlin is probably a match against one of the undefeated fighters from the post-tournament era like Jack Cobblepot, James Foster, Zaco or Stafford Alois.

The rest of the card also featured some interesting fights. Jack Cobblepot defeated Mac Fuller in a very close match. Fan favorite Dan Halvorsen won his match against Phil Verdigree by having the better ground game. He is in the top-10 of the rankings now. Stafford Alois won his second match as well, albeit not with a stunning head kick knockout victory, but with a less exciting decision victory over Ricardo Fernandes. Rick Stanley needed just 36 seconds to win knockout of the night honors sending Gustavo Bautista to the canvas with a big right. Manol Sirakov was part of the most exciting fight of the night once again, this time on the winning side. Travis Jones and Frank Analysis also won their match and the debuts of Sean Morrison and Edilberto went better than those of their opponents Peter Bracewell and Lee Bould.

Bohlin has been incredibly impressive, especially considering his size. It's fun that your own two champs so far have been smaller guys. Looking forward to seeing who you put him up against next.

Obviously happy Halvorsen got the win.

Cobblepot going 3-0 is good, he'd probably be my pick to face Bohlin next.

Also, fun to see Sean Morrison and Edilberto get involved now... I'd love to start a personal save like this, I just don't think I'd stick to it.

Great stuff again!

ANDREYEV vs. FOSTER

Saturday, Week 4, June 1989

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 283 – Gate: $13,775

Apparently advertising does work! Suddenly 283 people showed up at our show! The winner of today’s main event between the fighters that are ranked #5 and #6 will most likely produce the next title contender as the ones ranked before them have already had their shot not long ago. James Foster won the match in the dying seconds of round 3 by TKO. Up until then the match wasn’t too one-sided, with Andreyev being able to land some decent punches too.

Zaco also moves on to 3-0 after outlasting Walter May. There was another first at our event: Jeff Carlton and Mario de Souza had their match ending in a split draw. Meaning every judge had a different result. I personally feel that Carlton should have received the victory. The standup-striking was evenly matched, but he had 2 takedowns and some punches whilst fighting on the mat. Gunnar Nilsson added another W to his record and is hoping to get some momentum going. Veeti Kuqi won his first match after three straight losses. Leon Banks won knockout and fight of the night awards against Milton Harvey. Grant Shodwart was in the shortest MMA match ever so far, needing just 22 seconds to win by knockout. And we opened with an unexpected upset victory from Eugene Clough over Beau Gorshin!

Wow, didn't realise Andreyev was that high in the rankings tbh, he managed to turn himself around well haha. Good for Foster though, wonder if its his time now or if he needs to improve a bit more before being able to win the belt.

A Carlton/de Souza rematch sounds like it could happen at some point.

Nice to see Zaco continue to win and Kuqi pick up his first.

Do your guys call each other out much?

Yeah, there's a few challenges made. Cobblepot challenged Lars Bohlin for example, so that fight will most likely happen in a few months.

Yeah, I didn't understand either why Andreyev was that high up. It's not like he won against world beaters in Veeti Kuqi and Taufik Wijaya. He did finish them early and got high ratings for the fight, so that might have something to do with it.

Just read through this, great dynasty. I'm doing a similar one and Laurent reminds me of one of the guys who won an early tournament in mine. Pretty good but snakebitten.

I'm doing the rankings myself for my save, openweight makes them act weird, I think.

LAURENT vs. COBBLEPOT

Saturday, Week 4, July 1989

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 324 – Gate: $15,770

After experiencing his first defeat the first real MMA superstar George “Knock ‘em Out” Laurent got to face another seemingly elite fighter in “Jackpot” Jack Cobblepot. “Jackpot” last fought at AFF 12 and came away with a close split decision victory over Mac Fuller. To many people’s surprise he repeated that outcome tonight against Laurent! Cobblepot controlled most of the rounds with his wrestling skills and even managed to land more punches, albeit not very hard ones, than Laurent. He got knocked down in the second round by a big punch, but managed to hang in there and survive the round!

In the undercard we had some exciting matches, with all but two fights ending before the final bell. We witnessed another Rick Stanley match that lasted less than one minute. He’s on a roll! Frank Analysis has some analyzing to do of what can be improved. Stafford Alois ended his fight with another sick head kick, which won “Knockout of the Night” of course. AFF 1 veteran Travis Jones was on the receiving end of that. Marazzina broke his 3-fight losing streak by defeating Yanagita. Mark Cohen, Rob Baines, Davi Carlos Ramos and Taufik Wijaya also wound up winning their matches. Wijaya put the nail in the coffin of Seigo Tsuda’s AFF career.

Seigo Tsuda (0-5) has been sacked after losing 5 in a row. In this era he has his small size going against him as he is a power puncher facing much bigger opponents who nullify his strength advantage. He had pretty good hands, but proved to be way too one-dimensional as his three submission losses indicate. He’s 31 years old, so an impressive run elsewhere is also unlikely.

Taufik Wijaya was suspended for 6 months by AFF after not letting go of the submission hold after the referee had ended the match. Very unsportsmanlike of him!

One loss away from being sacked after losing their last four fights:

Cobblepot, Cohen and Alois continue to rise, I guess Cobblepot will likely be next up for a title shot after Foster.

Been meaning to ask, are you able to upload the database for this before any cards were run? I feel like I could have some fun with this.
