AFF ALLWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

AMARO vs. FOSTER

Saturday, Week 4, August 1989

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 403 – Gate: $19,616

Fernando Amaro tried to make a second successful defense of his championship title, but alas it wasn’t meant to be. He was up against the much bigger Olympic gold medalist Kurt A… errr James Foster. He lost the punching game and the ground game. Foster was able to take Amaro down at will, scoring 5 takedowns during the whole bout. Somehow he wasn’t able to finish Amaro however. His strikes lacked power for that. Foster is the new champion and will most likely keep the title for a while as he’s bigger than most of his potential opponents and also more skilled.

Other than that we had Mac Fuller scoring a bit of an upset victory over Dokuohtei Kuroki, who did not impress at all. Harry Milne easily controlled Edilberto for three rounds. The expected firework-laden matchup between Jeff Carlton and Phil Verdigree was a bit of a letdown and also ended with a unanimous decision victory, with Carlton as victor. Yamazaki, Malley, Dean, McCall, Tsuji and Atteveld won the matches between that contained no top-25 fighters. Atteveld versus Bodor was the MMA equivalent of a “Loser gets fired” match, sometimes seen in professional wrestling. Atteveld won dominantly and sent Bodor back to Budapest!

ZACO vs. HALVORSEN

Saturday, Week 4, September 1989

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 339 – Gate: $16,500

Perhaps this event can be seen as a weak card as we only have 5 ranked fighters fighting. Zaco defeated Halvorsen after punching him down in the third round and finishing up with some ground and pound. He was already winning the match on points before that by being the better striker. Sean Morrison ended his second professional fight in the first round, just like his debut match. This time he beat Mario de Souza. Morrison enters is now ranked in 10th place after that performance. We also had two AFF 1 veterans fight each other for the first time as Manol Sirakov squared off with Ricardo Fernandes. The originals in the crowd must have loved this. Sirakov was no match for Fernandes however.

The rest if the card featured lesser known names and had lots of decision victories. Only the opener won by Lee Bould was a real stunner! Solomon Austin won the snoozefest against fellow big man Veeti Kuqi. A “worst match of the year” candidate. Beau Gorshin, the debuting Yevgeni Sipatov and Leon Banks also managed to add a W to their record at expense of their opponents.

The MMA hype is really taking off. KDM FC has opened in Eastern Asia. Just like BCF they have boxing-like weight classes, but they focus on smaller fighters. COBBLEPOT vs. BOHLIN

Saturday, Week 4, October 1989

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 362 – Gate: $17,620

154 pound Lars Bohlin faced the 282 pound weighing “Jackpot” Jack Cobblepot. That’s almost double! As expected Cobblepot wanted to make a wrestling match out of this. He got what he wanted during the first three rounds and probably won those. In the fourth he got a bit too cocky and decided to take down Bohlin. The creative Bohlin managed to apply a Triangle submission hold from his back and “Jackpot” had no other option but tapping out and conceding the victory. Huge win for Bohlin!

The co-main event was the undefeated head kicker Stafford Alois against former boxer Mac Fuller. Surprisingly Mac Fuller came out on top! He won by majority decision, which is a first. He was technically the better striker and apparently Alois didn’t feel like trying to go for a crazy head kick today. I personally think the decision should’ve been unanimous.

The rest of the card was pretty stacked as well, in total 11 top-25 fighters made an appearance! Jim Carpenter defeated Walter May, Gunnar Nilsson outwrestled Rob Baines, Mantas Andreyev won a very very close split decision match over Greg Atteveld and Grand Shodwart won “knockout of the night” against Eijiro Yanagita. Davi Carlos Ramos convinced Francis O’Leary that MMA wasn’t really his thing and Mark “The Thing” Cohen opened with yet another victory and is now 3-0. Time for him to face some tougher competition.

LAURENT vs. STANLEY

Saturday, Week 4, November 1989

@Nevada, USA

Attendance: 343 – Gate: $16,696

Everyone who paid a ticket for this show knew that the main event match would not last long. These two have somewhat of a no nonsense style and came out swinging. Stanley threw a jab, Laurent answered with two powerful punches sending Stanley down, jumped on top and started pounding away like there was no tomorrow until the referee jumped imbetween. A much needed win for Laurent after his two losses against Cobblepot and Amara.

The co-main event had two undefeated fighters Jeff Carlton (2-0-1) and Sean Morrison (2-0) against each other. Carlton proved to be better in every aspect of the game, perhaps due to his huge size advantage… There was another fight between two AFF 1 veterans who hadn’t met yet, namely Francesco Marazzina and Ricardo Fernandes. It was a pretty exciting clash between styles that eventually went the distance, with Marazzina picking up the victory. Fernandes had no answer on the ground. Verdigree, Dean, Sipatov and Harvey also won their matches. The opener between two debuting fighters Glenn Pimm and Wade LeCavalier deserves special mention because it will probably win the “Fight of the Year” award. Pimm won the battle in the third round by submission.

Results:

Saturday, Week 4, December 1989

Attendance: 386 – Gate: $18,788

The last MMA show held in the eighties had 10 matches on the card. It was headlined by James Foster defending his title against Zaco. Both fighters were undefeated at 4-0 before today. James Foster put on a show today. In the striking game you could say Zaco was just as good as Foster, but he got taken down at will. Foster was not able to finish the fight before the final bell however. A dominant performance nonetheless.

Jack Cobblepot scored a dubious split decision victory over Harry Milne. The crowd felt that Milne should have been the victor, but some of the judges saw it differently. “The Prince of Darkness” Lee Bould made surprisingly quick work of Nigel Malley and is ranked #7 now! Veeti Kuqi won the freak match against Yee Tsuji. Beau Gorshin won knockout and fight of the night against Yamazaki. Kuroki, Jones, Norman, Hinchliffe and Cumming were also victorious.
