And the world has changed forever - WCW 1987

Recommended Posts

1987

In the early 1987, a young Texan Multi-Millionaire, J.R. Thornhill (not to be confused with J.R. Ewing), approached the slowly failing Jim Crockett Promotions and convinced them to sell some of their trademarks in exchange for a substantial, yet never disclosed, amount of money. Thus Mr. Thornhill became the proud owner of the World Championship Wrestling brand which he used for his company, and some minor brands like the Great American Bash.

1987 was, however, a very difficult year. With no prior experience or any corporate structure, the young WCW struggled significantly. But young Mr. Thornhill was a man of vision - he hired Killer Kowalski to be his road agent, signed some independent stars like Sgt. Slaughter, Ted DiBiase, Ken Patera, The Iron Sheik, Jerry Lawler and King Kong Bundy; signed some contracts with minor TV station that allowed him some visibility in the Tri-State Area and New England, and proceeded to conquer the world.

The first attempts were unsuccessful. Their first show, the World Championship Wrestling, was broadcasted by WBGN-TV, WCIU and WXNE, but these were the days of cable television, PPV and superstations, and they only attracted 18,000 viewers at most, and usually considerably less than that. Fallen stars like The Iron Sheik didn't help - wasted on drugs every time and annoying other workers, he had to be fired.

But then came The Big Bang 1987. Attendance was 4,431 and it attracted 21,650 viewers - it made some well-needed money and allowed the WCW to slowly spread by attracting new broadcaster soon after the show - SportsChannel America, which allowed WCW to spread west. This was primarily the age of Ken Patera who was the World Heavyweight Champion and is remembered for his hot feuds with Ted DiBiase and Sgt. Slaughter; and of Larry Zbyszko who defeated anyone willing to fight him. Even Bruno Sammartino joined the young promotion and WCW Intercontinental Title proved to be his last.

Always highly innovative, WCW introduced a strong women's division that later expanded to two titles - World and American. Heidi Lee Morgan, Wendi Richter, Palestina the Terrorist, Sherri Martel, Leilani Kai, Madusa Micelli and many others, heavily promoted by none other than Cyndi Lauper, dominated the female side of wrestling.

J.R. Thornhill, with his exceptional charisma, often promoted his wrestlers by himself. By the end of 1987 he became a somewhat recognizable persona, and by the end of 1988 he declared himself the "Savior of Wrestling", after buying the defeated Jim Crockett Promotions.

In September 1987, WCW introduced a new weekly event broadcasted among others by SportsChannelAmerica - The Victory Road. It attracted much more viewers than their early shows - 62,000 and later even 80,000 and the Victory Road of November 1987 attracted a whooping for WCW, 187,000 viewers.

December marked the end of an era for WCW - Ken Patera was no longer the head honcho - Mr. T was convinced to rejoin the world of professional wrestling and became the first superstar of WCW, feuding with Sgt. Slaughter, before the latter's eventual turn that created the most powerful duo in the world - Team America, after Sgt. Slaughter approached Mr. T. and they both agreed to fight together to stop the Soviet/Arab invasion orchestrated by Nikita Koloff, The Iron Sheik (now with fewer drug problems), Ivan Koloff, Vladimir Petrov and a few others. The invasion was all the more serious when The Iron Sheik defeated Bruno Sammartino in December to steal the Intercontinental Championship after bribing the referee.

The road to greatness proved to be quite bumpy for the young WCW, with many ups and downs on the way, and they've lost many great performers who were offered unbelievable contracts by WWF, determined to destroy the brazen upstart - they've lost Bruno Sammartino, The Iron Sheik, Nikita Koloff, among others, some in 1987 and more in 1988.

<div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">1988</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="font-size:14px;">January - June</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

1988 was still a "touring" year for WCW which back then still had a break between January and March and the second one in August. It began, however, with a strong bang - WCW combined forces with another upstart, FOX, and The Victory Road became the prime event of WCW, attracting more than 800,000 viewers throughout the US, and in Canada through local broadcasters. Victory Road of March 1987 (3 week) was the first time they attracted more than 1,000,000 viewers, who wanted to see Mr. T defeat The Iron Sheik to retain The Intercontinental Championship. </p><p> </p><p>

Another legendary fight of the time was the first SuperBrawl which was to become their prime monthly PPV event, although at the time was still broadcast on FOX - it was the first to attract more than 2,000,000 viewers, and almost 15,000 attended the event in Texas to see Mr. T and Sgt. Slaughter, the new Team America, defeat the Soviet-Arab alliance of Nikita Koloff and Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey. </p><p> </p><p>

The first PPV event for WCW was The Lethal Lottery that happened on the second Friday of May. It attracted 114,048 buys in the US and 20,900 viewers in Canada. Mr. T decisively defeated Nikita Koloff and claimed to have stopped the Soviet invasion. </p><p> </p><p>

The last Victory Road in May marked the definite end of the Patera age when he had lost the World Heavyweight title to Ted DiBiase who was an interim champion before Mr. T became the new title holder at the PPV SuperBrawl the next week.</p><p> </p><p>

May 1988 was also the time when the first female title was created - the Women's World Championship. The first title was held by Heidi Lee Morgan who defeated Sherri Martel. </p><p> </p><p>

This created the following title structure:</p><p>

<strong>World Heavyweight Champion:</strong> Mr. T</p><p>

<strong>Intercontinental Champion:</strong> Ken Patera</p><p>

<strong>All-American Champion:</strong> Sgt. Slaughter </p><p>

<strong>Tag Team World Championship:</strong> Mr. T and Sgt. Slaughter as Team America</p><p>

<strong>Women's World Champion:</strong> Heidi Lee Morgan</p><p> </p><p>

It is important to elaborate on the odd "All-American Title". It was created following Sgt. Slaughter's challenge to determine who is the manliest man in America. The challenge was answered by many wrestlers, Curt Hennig amongst them, but was won decisively by Sgt. Slaughter who later defended it against many wrestlers like Jake Roberts, Billy Jack Haynes, Ted DiBiase, Arn Anderson, Barry Darsow and many others. He lost the title once, in December 1988, to Larry Zbyszko, who defended it 3 times, before losing it to Sgt. Slaughter in March 1989.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

By the end of June the core schedule of WCW was also established. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Prime-Time Televised Weekly Events</strong></p><p>

World Championship Wrestling - WTBS, Eurosport, CBET, CHLT, CKY</p><p>

The Victory Road - FOX, Eurosport, CBET, CHLT, CKY</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Monthly PPV events carried by Comcast and televised in Canada and Europe</strong> </p><p>

WCW SuperBrawl</p><p>

WCW The Lethal Lottery</p><p> </p><p>

The No Way Out was broadcast as a monthly event throughout 1988 but was eventually discontinued when the New World Order was created as a development territory. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Announcers:</strong></p><p>

Gene Okerlund</p><p>

Bob Caudle</p><p>

Rich Landrum</p><p> </p><p>

Two televised events gave WCW a great advantage over WWF which still had just one TV show, WWF Raw, and thanks to the high quality of the shows (with many being rated "A" by experts), by the end of 1988 World Championship Wrestling attracted more viewers than Raw every single time.</p>

<div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">1988</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="font-size:14px;">July - December</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

June 1988 marked the last time so far that WCW received a "C+" rating and that same week WCW received their first "A" in a major, 2,5 hour long show, when Team America defeated the dreaded KGB (led by Ivan Koloff).</p><p> </p><p>

New titles were introduced throughout this period:</p><p>

<strong>United States Champion:</strong> Stan Hansen (Current holder as of Apr 1989: Ricky Steamboat)</p><p>

<strong>Women's American Champion:</strong> Wendi Richter (Current holder as of Apr 1989: Leilani Kai)</p><p>

<strong>World Television Champion:</strong> Stan Hansen (Current holder as of Apr 1989: The Undertaker)</p><p>

<strong>Women's World Tag Team:</strong> Heidi Lee Morgan and Wendi Richter (On hold following Richter's departure in 1989)</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>New stars</strong></p><p> </p><p>

WCW introduced several new stars to its roster in late 1988, mainly following the acquisition of the failed Jim Crockett Promotions: Ric Flair, King Kong Bundy, and Lex Luger among the most significant ones. </p><p> </p><p>

This was also the time of a careful buildup of several potential stars: The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Bam Bam Bigelow, Tony Atlas, Barry Windham and Tom Zenk. They were all given a great momentum and The Undertaker joined the Main Eventers in April 1989, being virtually unknown at the time of his acceptance into WCW in May 1988.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Broadcasting</strong></p><p> </p><p>

The second half of 1988 brought a great success for WCW which finally became a national level competitor, frequently attracting more than 10 million viewers. Throughout this period the World Championship Wrestling TV show was broadcast by TBS, Eurosport, Eurosport UK, CBET, CHLT and CKY, while the Victory Road continued to be broadcasted by FOX in addition to the same, smaller channels. Despite that it would take a long time for the WCW to become properly popular in Europe and it works hard by organizing smaller events there, along its Japanese events planned for 1989. WCW surely has international ambitions and it works really hard to make them a reality. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Other companies</strong></p><p>

WWF - as strong as ever by the end of 1988, currently at war with WCW.</p><p>

JCP - folded</p><p>

G.L.O.W. - folded</p><p>

EMLL - doing rather well, #4 in terms of influence, #7 in terms of importance.</p><p>

ASWUK - dead in the water, C prestige and momentum, not much has changed. </p><p>

A.W.A. - in heavy debt, takeover attempts by WCW were unsuccessful</p><p>

Japanese Wrestling - as strong as ever so far</p><p>

American Athletic Association (Fictional, I edited the real WCW already in the database) - a regional competitor in the Southern States, with a rather weak roster</p><p>

NWO - a development territory for WCW, a regional power in the Tri-State Area and New England, developing rather slowly</p><p> </p><p>

Remaining companies are very unremarkable. Overall the economy is in decline and everyone can feel that, which is especially difficult for a dinosaur like AWA, without the means to produce strong shows and an archaic product.</p>

<div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">1989</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="font-size:14px;">January - April</span></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

1989 was the last year to have a winter break - no events have taken place in January, the corporation moving to their new offices in Albany, NY, which included space for the future Hall of Fame, several studios for TV shows like <strong>Wrestling Today</strong> hosted every World Championship Wrestling by the unforgettable Jim Cornette, which focuses on more "serious" sports talk, <strong>Meet the Snake</strong> hosted every Victory Road by Jake Roberts, focused on heels and considerably less "serious", as well as the occasional <strong>Fireside Chat</strong> where the Chairman himself, the Savior of Wrestling, J.R. Thornhill, talks about his ambitious plans for the future, presents new wrestlers, and inspires millions through self-help broadcasts. </p><p> </p><p>

In April a new deal was signed with MTV Europe to replace Eurosport and Eurosport UK. It will let WCW access countless young fans, and introduce wrestling to the new generation through various promos outside the shows, including many celebrities contracted to endorse the American Sport. According to the agreement MTV Europe will be the sole WCW broadcaster in Europe and will show both the World Championship Wrestling TV show and all events, including the weekly Victory Road. Various European parliaments are already discussing different ways to regulate wrestling's presence in Europe, to counter its American, capitalistic and libertarian values, sparking massive protests of young people. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Facing the WWF</strong></p><p>

In 1989 J.R. Thornhill introduced a ruthless strategy aimed at weakening the WWF and uniting the greatest American wrestlers in a single promotion. In February, several of the main WWF stars joined WCW:</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Jake Roberts</strong> </p><p>

<strong>Harley Race</strong></p><p>

<strong>Ricky Steamboat</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Of these stars, Jake Roberts and Harley Race were given a shot at the World Heavyweight title, with both contesting it, and Harley Race finally defeating Mr. T in March 1989. He successfully defended it once, before being defeated by Ric Flair in one of the most epic fights in the history of WCW, an "I Quit" fight watched by more than 11 million people worldwide. Both the match and the entire event received an "A" rating.</p><p> </p><p>

Thus Ric Flair Era had begun and he is currently not only the most famous WCW wrestler but also the most famous wrestler in America, defeating Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, as well as Mr. T and Sgt. Slaughter. His unforgettable promos with J.R. Thornhill, as well as amazing interviews by Jim Cornette made the stylin', profilin', limousine ridin', jet flyin', kiss-stealin', wheelin' n' dealin' son of a gun the greatest household name, and the very symbol of Capitalism, which he protects against the Soviets by defeating the likes of Krusher Khrushchev, together with Team America. </p><p> </p><p>

In April 1989, J.R. Thornhill shocked the world again, this time by signing <strong>Andre the Giant</strong> himself, for a whopping $125,000 a month, salary matched only by Ric Flair. The great hero is expected to be officially presented in May. </p><p> </p><p>

Following the recent failures, odd shows and internal difficulties, WWF is no longer considered a "National" company by the experts and merely a "Cult" level promotion. Still greater than WCW in terms of importance, and quite famous in Europe, WWF remains a strong contender and the richest company in business but is it strong enough to stop the WCW bulldozer that has changed the world of wrestling forever?</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Current Title Holders:</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>World Heavyweight Champion:</strong> Ric Flair</p><p>

<strong>World Tag Team Champion:</strong> Mr. T and Sgt. Slaughter as Team America</p><p>

<strong>Intercontinental Champion:</strong> Mr. T</p><p>

<strong>All-American Champion:</strong> Sgt. Slaughter</p><p>

<strong>United States Champion:</strong> Ricky Steamboat</p><p>

<strong>World Television Champion:</strong> The Undertaker</p><p>

<strong>Women's World Champion:</strong> Heidi Lee Morgan</p><p>

<strong>Women's American Champion:</strong> Leilani Kai</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>This is where the history lesson ends</strong></p><p> </p><p>

This is the last part of the perhaps lengthy story of how WCW became the promotion to be reckoned with. From now on every show will be fully described here, as well as everything happening around them and on the wrestling market.</p>

WCW – SuperBrawl

May 6th, 1989

In front of 55,000 people.

Rating: A

PPV: 263,340 buys on Comcast

Broadcast: 1,836,640 on MTV Europe, CBET, CHLT and CKY

Opening by J.R. Thornhill and Andre The Giant

Mr. Thornhill opens today show by presenting the Eighth Wonder of the World, the Magnificent, Andre the Giant. “Not only am I presenting the Eighth Wonder today, not only am I announcing a new era in the professional wrestling’s history, I promise you a show. Andre the Giant will not wait, he will face Jake Roberts today!”

Grade: A*

Awesome Twosome vs The Rebels

Rick Rude & Manny Fernandez will face Arn Anderson & Bob Roop in this show’s opener. Awesome Twosome defeats The Rebels when Manny Fernandez defeated Arn Anderson by pinfall with the Flying Burrito.

Grade: C

Cyndi Lauper interviews Leilani Kai

Cyndi Lauper interviews Leilani Kai. They talk about the internal conflicts in the Women’s Division. Leilani, the current Women’s American Champion taunts Palestina the Terrorist and Madusa Micelli, known as the Terror Alert. She will face either of them and is confident about her victory.

Grade: B

Alliance Formed

Sting joins the Grand Alliance of some of WCW’s greatest stars – Ric Flair, Mr. T and Sgt. Slaughter. The four vow to defend America and the promotion.

Grade: A*

Barry Windham vs Dick Slater

Dick Slater keeps asking for a rematch and J.R. Thornhill grants it. The two visibly try to steal the show and the fight gets a really strong ovation. Barry Windham defeats Dick Slater in 18:14 by pinfall with the Flying Lariat.

Grade: B

Grade: C+

Andre the Giant vs Jake Roberts

Andre the Giant makes a spectacular entrance to face Jake Roberts who brings his pet snakes to witness Andre’s defeat for themselves [rating A* and A*]. Andre is visibly terrified by them, but overcomes his fear before the snakes are removed by the security. Referee David Manning announces the rules: this is going to be an “I quit” bout. The fight is full of twists and turns but Jake Roberts ultimately can’t stop the giant from dominating the second part of the fight.

Roberts truly had a vast repertoire of moves but his signatures like the Gutbuster or the Swinging Knee Lift won’t work against a 520 lbs. giant. In the second half of the bout, Andre is unstoppable and taunts the crowd often, while Jake is spending every moment possible to recuperate and rethink his strategy. The fight ends with a final submission in 14:46.

Following the battle, Harley Race arrives to save his friend and vows a revenge. Andre spends around 5 minutes celebrating and showing off his giant muscles [rating A].

Grade: B+

Bruno Sammartino's contract with AJPW is ending soon but in my opinion, he's not currently worth $25,000 a month it would take to hire him. WWF is not interested in hiring him either so there is no competition here. </p><p> </p><p>

Thanks! I wanted a challenge and building a wrestling promotion from the ground up was a great experience. A lot of ups and downs, workers being snatched by the WWF and JCP and having to work with drug addicts like The Iron Sheik or Kerry von Erich who disrupt everything often. But I made it and it's getting really interesting now - I can shape a better wrestling world!

The Million Dollar Man relies on his cheating and money, Patera is both brains and brawns. A truly extraordinary performance,” explains Bob Caudle. </p><p> <strong>Grade: B</strong> </p></div></blockquote><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="45352" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>Ken Patera and Cyndi Lauper Promo</strong><p> Ken Patera is being interviewed by Cyndi Lauper and voices his support for the women’s wrestling and offers to teach them what it means to be a true fighter. The final battle between an upstart, The Undertaker and the “Total Package” Lex Luger steals the show. The Undertaker, still fresh, makes too many mistakes, losing momentum after a strong start with a brawling barrage. Lex Luger shows true technical masterclass with a flawless gorilla press drop and a great hip toss, before finishing the fight with a great submission.</p><p> <strong>Grade: B</strong> </p></div></blockquote>

Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey, well-known for his long feud with Team America has to prove that he still has what it takes to be in the greatest pro wrestling promotion in the world. He starts the fight slowly, feeling his opponent who is erratic and opens with short brawling bursts, a large part of them missing – the 23 year old rookie still has a lot to learn if he wants to remain in business. When it comes to chain wrestling, the Sheik clearly has the upper hand and dominates the second half of the bout. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are in for a fight that will determine the wrestling landscape like few others. What a time to be alive!”</p><p> </p><p> Sgt. Slaughter and Larry Zbyszko both make spectacular entrances, a long tradition of huge WCW bouts. As always, Sergeant is assisted by the military and kisses the American flag before entering the ring. Larry instead taunts the crowd initiating probably the loudest “boo” in the history of pro wrestling. “Truly, he is the most hated man in wrestling, perhaps even the entire world,” adds Bob Caudle. </p><p> </p><p> The two know the drill, they face each other many times before, but this one is different. The NWA title is like a red cloth for Zbyszko, who attacks ferociously, at one point almost knocking the Sergeant down. Whenever Slaughter gets the upper hand, however, Zbyszko proceeds with his old trick of fleeing the ring and stalling the bout and vocally arguing with the referee. The third time, however, Sergeant has enough of that and exits the ring himself, hits Zbyszko a few times causing him to forget for a moment who and where he is, and forces him on the ground with an effective backbreaker. Zbyszko, tough as always, tries to get up but Sergeant lifts him and carries back to the ring, preventing any attempt to escape. The match ends when Sgt. Slaughter defeats slightly beaten Zbyszko in 30:10 with his trademark Cobra Clutch. </p><p> </p><p> Sgt.
