[RealWorld] HoH: Introducing Hardcore to a new generation

No politics, no BS, just wrestling

Back in the 90s, "House of Hardcore" was the name used for ECW's wrestling school and dojo. Decades later, on June 21, 2012, Tommy Dreamer began promoting the "House of Hardcore" brand via his Twitter account. In the weeks afterward, HoH would be revealed to be a wrestling school run by Dreamer, Hale Collins and Vik Dalishus based out of the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, New York. HoH would also run an event on October 6, 2012 in order to promote the school's graduate as well as bring back a few beloved ECW alumni for a night of nostalgia. With the success of the first show, the promotion has continued to run events since, but Dreamer wanted more than just another attempt at reviving the original ECW; he wanted a promotion that would carry the true the spirit of ECW: unorthodox, innovative and defiant. House of Hardcore would not become a resurrected zombie of nostalgia, but the spiritual successor to everything that made ECW successful in the 90s.

<img alt="YTml2RL.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/YTml2RL.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p>The man himself, the innovator of violence and House of Hardcore owner Tommy Dreamer comes out to kick off the show. Dreamer welcomes the fans and praises them for supporting House of Hardcore time and time again by spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets and keeping the dream alive. His words hit a sentimental nerve with the fans who bust out an "E-C-Dub! E-C-Dub!" chant early on in the show for that cheap nostalgia pop, before a menacing guitar riff cuts through the enthusiastic atmosphere.</p><p>

<em>Not a fan of the original ECW?</em></p></div><p></p><p>Rampage Brown confidently makes his way to the ring under the unafraid but slightly confused stare of Dreamer. For a moment, it looks like he's going to grab the mic from Dreamer's hand to speak his own mind, but instead he lunges forward into a headbutt that catches Dreamer off guard and sends him crashing to the ground. Rampage Brown then yells something to the stunned icon, mic catching words like "relic" and "has been" before Rampage retreats backstage and fan chants bring Dreamer back on his feet so he can leave the scene and hopefully get some help.</p><p>

<strong>T-N-T vs Alex Reynolds & Kevin Kross</strong></p></div><p></p><p>What better way to let new fans into what HoH is all about than having Terrell and Terrence, sons of none other than ECW alumni Devon Dudley face fellow youngsters Alex Reynols and "The Tollman" Kevin Kross. Fans recognize second generation stars T-N-T who are anything but shy about it as they use the original Dudleys entrance music, but true to their hardcore nature, wait to see them prove themselves in action before embracing them fully. The arrogant Reynolds starts the match off at a fast pace as he tries to prove his superiority in the ring and after a sequence of exchanging moves, the wrestlers come to a standoff before tagging in their respective partners. Kross keeps the pace fast but his style is one of explosive brawling and excessive use of weapons, which -as the announcing duo of Jimmy Korderas and Danny "Doring" Morrison inform fans- is what earned him that nickname, since win or lose, every match takes a heavy toll on his opponents. T-N-T show toughness and fighting spirit as they take every blow but struggle to retaliate. It only takes one moment of luck for them to hit a 3D out of nowhere though and T-N-T wrap up their House of Hardcore debut with a win.</p><p>

Handed a mic, he cuts a rather smarky promo in which he speaks about his frustration with the narrow-minded, conservative and simplistic mentality of pro wrestling promoters that shoehorns people into the crudest stereotypes, much like he was forced to play the 'angry arab' just because of his ancestry. Fans cheer, but he immediately turns it around by saying he regrets nothing about it, because that brought him and Ariya to the big leagues and fat paychecks of the WWE, a twist that sends the audience into rowdy boos.</p><p>

<strong>Shawn Daivari vs Lance Anoa'i</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Daivari's scheduled opponent is the youngest member of the Anoa'i family. Lance has very few chances to hit a move in the six or so minutes this match lasts, as Daivari keeps turning things around in his favor thanks to superior wits and experience, beating the rookie clean with a Hammerlock DDT.</p><p>

<em>Remember these guys?</em></p></div><p></p><p>JTG and Shad, known during their WWE days as Cryme Time, make their entrance to a good reaction from the crowd. Once the nostalgia pop dies down, JTG re-introduces himself as J-Paul (a play on his real name of Jayson Paul) and says people are probably wondering what he's been up to since they last saw him on TV. The answer is he's put out a rap album and hired his best friend Shad as his bodyguard (playing up the fact of both Shad and his father being real-life bodyguards for various celebrities). He then proceeds to bust a few rhymes, much to the displeasure of the fans who don't seem to be buying this new rapper gimmick, before a high energy guitar riff interrupts him.</p><p>

<strong>Rhyme Tyme (J-Paul & Shad Gaspard) vs Ink Inc (Jesse Neal & "The Prince of Punk" Shannon Moore)</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Right off the bat, it is obvious both teams have a lot of similarities: they are both themed around a certain music and lifestyle; also, they have one nimble high flyer in J-Paul and Moore as well as a powerhouse in Shad and Neal. The flow of the match becomes a game of wits as both teams try to take advantage of the mismatch and isolate the smaller member of the opposing team against their own team's big man. This leads to some entertaining comedy spots from Rhyme Tyme as well as one of Moore reversing a powerbomb into a rana. Jesse Neal's inexperience turns out to be the deciding factor and a miscalculated move allows J-Paul to trap him in the ropes as Shad hits the STO on Moore for the pin.</p><p>

<strong>ODB vs Katarina Waters</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Wrestling under her real name, WWE's Katie Lea Burchill and TNA's Winter gets a good chance in this match to leave the gimmicky stuff behind and show what she can do. Her opponent is the loud-mouthed fan favorite ODB and she gives no quarter; Waters takes a flurry of punches and some suplexes that rattle her brain, forcing her to switch tactics in order to keep ODB on the mat. Things slow down and ODB spends more and more energy with every escape. Eventually, she crawls for a rope break, but seeing her flask in the corner, her mind is conflicted. Waters senses her chance and uses the momentary distraction to bring ODB back into the center of the ring, where she finishes her off with a Blood Mist.</p><p>

<strong>Tommy Dreamer & Willie Mack vs Lance Archer & Rampage Brown</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Building up on the opening segment, this match sees Dreamer and Brown team with Mack and Archer respectively to solve their differences. Emotions are already on a high and Dreamer is on Brown's throat before the bell even rings, prompting Archer and Mack to join in for an all out brawl. Things quickly break down to a ringside brawl and once Mack's spine is introduced to a ringpost, Archer and Brown take turns beating on Dreamer. Fans cheer the hardcore icon on and Dreamer stays in the match just long enough for Mack to get a second wind and join the fray for the rescue. Things turn around and Mack fires up the fans with a few lucha-inspired aerial moves his frame wouldn't suggest he's able to pull off, before hitting a Stunner on Archer. His pin is broken down by Rampage, who irish-whips him into a charging Dreamer, causing them to accidentally drop into a Dreamer DDT. Without a flinch, Rampage tosses Dreamer out of the ring and drags Mack in the middle for a sick Brainbuster Suplex and the pin.</p><p>

<strong>Alpha Female & Jessicka Havok vs Serena Deeb & Tenille Dashwood</strong></p></div><p></p><p>More womens' wrestling in what has come to be called "Destruction Duo vs Team WWE" on social media by wrestling fans. All four competitors get loud reactions upon entering but there is no denying the fact that it's Dashwood a.k.a. WWE's Emma that gets the loudest. The monster team rolls with that and act all frustrated by the cheers as they assert their dominance with big power moves on Deeb. The former Straightedge Society member shows perseverance and fighting spirit, not only taking the hits but slowly fighting back too. For a moment, things get a little sloppy between Havok and Deeb in the ring, so an emergency blind tag brings Dashwood in the match to loud fan approval. Havok resumes the offensive but ends up getting outwrestled, so she tags her own teammate in. The menacing German, known to most U.S. fans as Jazzy Gabert during WWE's Mae Young Classic tournament, takes Dashwood's hits without flinching. Her own moves however are too slow and plodding, allowing her opponent to dodge out of the way and impose her own pace on the match. This frustrates the German and move by move she gets more careless, up to the point where she walks right into a Roaring Elbow that drops her long enough for the pin.</p><p>

<strong>Colt Cabana vs David Starr</strong></p></div><p></p><p>The show's main event sees beloved indy star Colt Cabana go up against the young upstart David Starr. Starr is a legitimate amateur wrestling... well, star and this causes him to have a rather cocky demeanor that Cabana's comedy antics only seem to amplify. Once a few slaps and hard hits snap Cabana out of his usual fun loving self and into competitive mode, things change and fans are treated to a classic hold-and-counterhold back and forth. Using his own technical skills, Cabana helps Starr showcase his own considerable talent, before changing the game into a no-nonesense brawl. Still, Starr is not limited to mat grappling powers and he holds his own in the ensuing fight, providing an answer for everything Cabana throws at him.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="cXg4Vue.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/cXg4Vue.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p>

<em>Enter this angry young man</em></p></div><p></p><p>After much back and forth, Starr's former tag team partner JT Dunn shows up and attacks Colt Cabana, causing him to automatically win by disqualification. The ensuing argument between Dunn and Starr amplifies the confusion caused by his interference; it is not clear whether this was arranged and Starr is furious at Dunn for being so obvious, whether this was Dunn's own initiative and if so, whether he was trying to help Starr or intentionally cost him the match. Before the confusion can boil up into boos, the bell is rung again and the announcement is made: fans will get what they were promised and not some shitty mess up finish; the main event will only end by pinfall or submission. Also, JT Dunn is banned from ringside.</p><p>

The match practically restarted, it is now a grueling battle of will and endurance. Starr may have youth on his side, but Cabana has experience and he uses it to play possum. This boosts Starr's confidence and he carelessly gets caught in the Boston Crab, forcing him to tap out and throw away the match.</p><p>

A cool start, not dissimilar to what I'm doing with my own ECW game on here!

Very much true, I noticed your writing after I'd posted my first show. This is my first time using a RW mod and while I was tempted to do ECW, HoH felt a bit more... fresh?

Thanks for the support, hope you stick around and like what comes next!

I’ll be keeping up to date on this one and see what you do with it.

Appreciate someone who sets such rules of personal conduct when playing the game. Makes it harder but more interesting than just putting together the optimal cards.

This is my first ever RW game/dynasty and given HoH's limitations, there's a lot of fresh talent I gotta look up in order to portray correctly, so things might be a little slow with updates.

<em>Boom boom</em></p></div><p></p><p>Colt Cabana's familiar theme comes on the speakers as the show starts, bringing the crowd to its feet. Cabana comes out of the curtain and enters the ring, soaking up the applause before he takes to the mic as the noise dies down. Addressing his scheduled main event match against Rampage Brown tonight, Cabana promises to send the mean-tempered Brit back home across the ocean, if nothing else for his lack of respect towards the living legend that is Tommy Dreamer.</p><p>

<em>Truly, a mean-tempered Brit</em></p></div><p></p><p>The cheers at the mention of Dreamer's name are interrupted by the music of Rampage Brown. With a smug smile across his face, Brown enters the ring and gets in Cabana's face, who tries to provoke him with some witty teasing. Brown does not speak and for a moment it looks like things are about to get physical, but Brown instead waves away the notion and leaves the ring, shaking his head as Cabana shouts on the mic about seeing him later tonight.</p><p>

<strong>Barbi Hayden vs Daizee Haze</strong></p></div><p></p><p>The opening bout is a women's match, pitting the debuting rookie Barbi Hayden against the veteran Daizee Haze. Judging from the fans' reactions, they seem familiar with Hayden, a fan living the dream as she's just breaking out of her home Texas region to start he career as a pro wrestler, so her whole Blue Chipper character isn't too much of a stretch from reality and it translates nicely into her style and moveset. Haze on the other hand has over a decade of professional experience, something she uses to exploit every rookie mistake her enthusiastic opponent makes. Coming back from a long hiatus however, the ring rust shows on her and she's not up to par with what fans remember from her. This all makes for a rather competitive match that allows Hayden to showcase her skills, before Haze tricks her into a Mind Trip and subsequently pins her for the win.</p><p>

Keeping it short and sweet, Daivari says he's brought some backup in the form of his new bodyguard, proud Arab-American Omar Akbar</p><p>

<em>Totally not Wade Barret/Stu Bennet</em></p></div><p></p><p>Chants of "Muhammad Hassan" come as no surprise, especially from the smarkier HoH fans who are aware that Akbar, like Hassan, is not actually even of Arabic descent. His character does get a decent reaction though, perhaps due to a fair share of the audience wanting to see the original idea done right this time.</p><p>

<strong>Shawn Daivari & Omar Akbar vs T-N-T</strong></p></div><p></p><p>The duo's scheduled opponents are the twin sons of D-Von Dudley, Terrence and Terrell. A confident Akbar starts the match for his team, but the sheer power and synch of T-N-T are too much for him to handle, forcing him to cowardly retreat and tag Daivari in. As the veteran in the match, Daivari handles the fight much better and even takes some of his opponent's biggest moves while still kicking out of any cover attempts. The twins' attack eventually leads to a 3D, but Akbar barely manages a blind tag before he pulls Terrell out of the ring. Confusion follows as the referee refuses to count the cover on Daivari and the arguing Terrence gets rolled up from behind for juuuust a three count, right before Terrell can get back in the ring to break it up.</p><p>

<strong>Juicy Product (David Star & JT Dunn) vs Lance Anoa'i & Willie Mack</strong></p></div><p></p><p>The reunited Juicy Product face promising up and comers Anoa'i and Mack in this one. Fuelled by both skill and superior training, the "rookies" take control of the match in blitzkrieg fashion, looking for a quick win. Their enthusiasm makes for some exciting spots, but doesn't earn them a pin. Slowly, Star reverses the flow of the match thanks to some great counter-wrestling, before tagging in Dunn to bring the pain with his strong style inspired attacks. Fans cheer for a comeback, but Anoa'i is isolated and helpless on the opposing team's corner as Dunn cuts him down with stiff kicks, before throwing him on his head with a Release German Suplex. Mack rushes for the save but Star fends him off and three seconds later, Juicy Product are the winners of the match.</p><p>

<strong>Destruction Duo vs ODB & Tenille Dashwood</strong></p></div><p></p><p>With every match, Alpha Female and Jessicka Havok seem to figure out more and more about how to function better as a team. Until that scary time, ODB and Dashwood try to make the most of any opening they're able to get on their two monster opponents, something easier said than done. Dashwood especially seems out of her waters and, to much fan excitement, displays shades of her "Emma" character as she bosses ODB around to fight the match for her. Never one to back down from a fight, the scrappy brawler goes toe to toe with both members of the Destruction Duo, but this ill-thought tactic burns out her fighting spirit too fast and she soon succumbs to the Omega Slam as Dashwood can do nothing but watch in fear.</p><p>

The danger gone, Dashwood gets inside and brings ODB to her feet as fans applaud them both. Motioning for a mic, ODB goes into a short speech in which she thanks the fans, those of today and those of so many years, as she announces her decision to end her in-ring career, marking this as having been her last match. The shock has fans erupt in cheers and chants of praise and thanks, while ODB and Dashwood hug in an emotional moment of passing the torch before Dashwood takes the mic to urge the fans in more cheering while she esorts ODB to the back.</p><p>

<strong>The Slophunters (Alex Reynolds & John Silver) vs Ink Inc (Jesse Neal & "The Prince of Punk" Shannon Moore)</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Another reunited tag team in action up next, as John Silver returns to House of Hardcore to reunite with on-and-off teammate and rival Alex Reynolds. The duo, both trained by ECW alumni Mikey Whipwreck, are no strangers to the fans and although they are firm in supporting them (despite the Slophunters technically being heels) it seems the decision to give Silver his old Arrogant Heel gimmick was a poor one; fans have been following his progress in the indy scene and no one seems to buy into the forced nostalgia. Silver's puroresu stiff hits aren't making this any easier to swallow and nor does reverting to his usual high flying, although it does make for a nice sequence of aerial moves he exchanges with Moore. Meanwhile, Reynolds and Neal take up the roles of powerhouse brawlers for their teams, with Reynolds showing his versatility as he ends up winning the match by submission when he gets Neal in the Reynolds Wrap.</p><p>

<strong>Serena Deeb vs Katarina Winters</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Winters is a scary sight walking to the ring, both due to her facial expressions and ripped physique since last month that make it clear she's here to hurt somebody. Serena Deeb is bright and cheerful in comparison, but that gets her nowhere once the match gets underway. Winters unloads on her opponent with bloodthirsty viciousness as soon as the bell rings and Deeb sells it great to garner sympathy from the crowd. After taking a major beating for over five minutes in a very one sided match, Deeb makes a heroic "hardcore" comeback. That's not only thanks to the never-say-die warrior spirit she displays, but also apparent in her reckless moveset and use of weapons, harking back to her days as a member of the Straightedge Society. The match quickly turns into something straight out of a 90s ECW show, a real car crash of stunts and excessive violence, only this time it's women wrestling. Deeb is leaving her heart and soul in the ring to much fan applause, whereas Winters seems to be thrown off her usual slow, dominant style. Stamina soon becomes an issue and Winters starts spending more and more time hunched over trying to catch her breath. It's one of those moments that sets her up for a desperate Spear from Deeb, who gets carried by the momentum of the impact and simply collapses on top of her opponent as the ref counts the one two three.</p><p>

<strong>Colt Cabana vs Rampage Brown</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Rampage Brown may not be that well known outside his home country, but HoH fans are smarky enough to already know who he is and "hardcore" enough to appreciate him for his work. Brown brings a unique mix of rugged physicality and predatory cunning to the match and from the get-go it gives him the advantage over Cabana who's having trouble finding answers to Brown's attacks. Every time Cabana tries something, Brown either reverses it immediately or quickly finds a way to avoid losing control of the match. The pace slows down, allowing Brown to use his favorite grinding style and Cabana some time to think of what he must do to turn the tables. Soon, it's a question of whether Cabana will come up with something and whether by that time he will have sustained too much damage already. After more than twenty grueling minutes of struggling to stay in the match, Cabana's answer is a fast roll-up reversal on his opponent. It's nothing flashy, but it still earns him the victory and by this point, he looks like he'd take any kind of win in order to stop the beatings.</p><p>

<em>But wait! There's more!</em></p></div><p></p><p>Barely able to stand on his own two feet, Cabana grabs a mic as fans applaud both men for their work. Huffing and puffing, Cabana puts Brown over, acknowledging he brought the fight and pushed him to his limits, but at the end of the day, this is his house. Brown seems to appreciate the recognition, but that doesn't change the fact he lost as is still not happy about how the match went as he leaves the scene and returns to the locker room.</p><p>

Slophunters vs T-N-T

Strong start to the show as the recently reunited Slophunters face the second generation tag team of T-N-T. Match is pretty open with momentum swinging back and forth as all four men hit their signature individual and tag moves. From there, they nod at their trainers for a bit of extra pop to get the crowd going; Reynolds and Silver connect with stereo Whipper Snappers, T-N-T hit a "Wazzaaaap" Diving Headbutt on Silver but before they can capitalize, Reynolds tosses Terrell to the outside and reverses a Bubba Bomb from Terrence into the Reynolds Wrap for a quick submission win at 9:35.

Lance Anoa'i vs Eric Corvis

Unacquainted with the rowdy HoH audience, local talent Eric Corvis seems to be out of his element and Anoa'i is able to stay in control for most of the match. Even when Corvis manages to get some offense going, Anoa'i fights through and turns the tide, until he is finally able to deliver the Wild Samoan Splash for the pinfall victory.

Middle East Connection (Shawn Daivari & Omar Akbar) vs Ink Inc

Now boasting a proper team name, the middle eastern duo of Daivari and Akbar find themselves up against more experienced opponents than the month prior. On the other end of the bout, Ink Inc seek a win that will break their losing streak and keep them afloat. The setup of the match means Ink Inc are gunning for a quick win from the opening bell, their offense taking M.E.C. by storm initially before the veteran Daivari slows things down a bit. Utilizing every trick they can muster, the heels get to work on Neal, wearing him down with submission holds and double team moves on their corner. With some fan support, Neal gets a second wind and powers his way out to give the hot tag to his partner. Moore slingshots off the ropes to bring up the match pace and take out the opposition, then tags Neal back in for a double team maneuver. Before Neal can get through the ropes, Akbar tosses Moore to the outside, forcing him to land bad and apparently injure himself. Furious, Neal shoots through the ropes and hits Akbar with a Spear, covering him for the pin. Ink Inc finally get the win, but they are in no mood to celebrate as Neal immediately rolls out of the ring to check on his partner and help him backstage.

Willie Mack vs JT Dunn

Building on the fallout of last month's tag match, Mack and Dunn square off in singles action. Mack fires an opening salvo with a smooth combination of slams and aerial moves looking for a quick cover, but Dunn kicks out rolls out of the ring to assess the situation. Being the smaller man in the match, Dunn needs to figure out how to use his Japanese-inspired offense best in it and for now at least, Mack's taunts to get back in don't seem to get under his skin. When he gets back, Dunn uses super stiff kicks to chop down his opponent's legs, which he soon complements with Boston Crabs and other submission holds that further damage that area. Mack is obviously suffering, but fights to get the rope break and with a lot of heart, busts some flying moves using his damaged legs, before finally putting away Dunn with a devastating Chocolate Thunder Driver.

Alpha Female vs Barbi Hayden

Already dubbed "the best kept secret in women's wrestling", the promising Hayden finds herself in a tough spot with a lot to prove against Germany's most menacing female export, Alpha Female. To no one's surprise, the European monster dominates the match, alternating between big hits, crushing slams and painful submissions to wear down the diminutive Hayden. The Texas native does however manage to get the win when she somehow surprises her opponent and wraps her up in a small package, which keeps her down just long enough for the count and a big underdog victory that has fans cheering.

Grade: D-

73h7KDY.jpgGwOQK29.jpg

Furious at her loss despite spending the entire match demolishing her opponent, Alpha Female gets on her feet and is clearly looking to take out her anger on Hayden. Realizing what's in store, Hayden quickly retreats to the backstage area and it looks like the German is about to give chase, when...

AfGfdXv.jpg

Dead end ahead

...her eyes fixed in the ring, Hayden blindly bumps into an obstacle so hard she's knocked down. Towering over her is none other than Jessicka Havok and Alpha Female joins at her own time with an evil smile on her face. Caught between a rock and a hard place, Hayden has nowhere to go and the two monster heels deliver a brutal beatdown. Once they're satisfied with the destruction they've caused, the Destruction Duo returns to the backstage area as medics storm in to check on the dismantled Hayden.

YTml2RL.jpg25UZG0h.pngVZ5cP86.jpg

"The Innovator of Violence" Tommy Dreamer vs "The Tollman" Kevin Kross

Given Kross' mean streak, it is no surprise a match against the hardcore legend himself quickly turns into an absolute car crash. Reminiscent of the good ol' days of the original ECW, the match sees Kross use all kinds of weapons on Dreamer, including variations of his usual moves that incorporate chairs and trash cans, causing fans to bust the familiar "E C Dub" chant. Despite his age, Dreamer stays in the match and the more he gets hurt, the more he seems to fight back. Hardcore matches are Dreamer's game, so using a lifetime of experience in them, Dreamer swings momentum of the match around and after a Death Valley Driver onto a trash can, pins Kross for the win.

Bzs082z.jpg25UZG0h.pngoDUoFk3.jpg

Tenille Dashwood vs Katarina Winters

Second womens match for the night, this one's pretty 50/50 as opposed to the one-sided squash earlier. Taking the time to work the fans and build this up, the two women initially trade blows and basic holds, before moving on to bigger moves. Fans are solid in support of Dashwood and Waters uses that to play up her mean streak, taking pleasure in all the damage she gets to inflict on her opponent. Dashwood kicks out of the pin attempt and fights back, eventually busting the Roaring Elbow but Winters ducks under it to keep the match going. Once again hinting at her heel days as Emma, Dashwood gives Winters a taste of her own medicine when she too seems to enjoy hurting her. For a moment, it feels like a potential turn is imminent, but then Dashwood finally connects with a desperate Roaring Elbow out of nowhere and covers Winters for a clean win.

Bang bang

Once the ring clears, the familiar music of the Motor City Machine Guns comes on the speakers to set the fans on fire. Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley make their entrance and get in the ring with mics in their hands. After some cheap heat thanking the crowd and saying they're happy to be there, the Guns point to HoH's slogan of "No politics, no BS, just wrestling" to taunt their scheduled opponents. MCMG bring up a list of classic matches they've had in their career, wondering what Rhyme Tyme have done besides mainly comedy skits, obviously implying they lack the skill to even be with House of Hardcore, let alone beat them.

Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) vs Rhyme Tyme

Clearly fired up by their opponents' words, Rhyme Tyme tone down the taunts and focus on the wrestling, displaying an unusual (for them) in-ring skill. However, every time they seem to be getting somewhere, the Guns outwrestle them. It may be a more devastating or flashy move, but every time they one-up what came before them, to the point where there's no denying who the better wrestlers are. This constant escalation of in-ring action catches the announcing duo off guard and they struggle to keep up with the action, both the new moves Rhyme Time hit as well as the offensive sequences MCMG pull off in fluid succession. Fans are treated to a great match and the Guns pick up an absolutely deserving win when Shelley pins Jayson Paul after an Underarm Snap STO.

Boom boom, Court Cabana

There's no denying Cabana and CM Punk's fresh big legal win over WWE's Dr. Amman, so as soon as the man comes out, smarky fans go into a furious "Court Cabana" chant. Unable to hold back a smile as he walks to the ring, Cabana gets on the mic for a brilliant promo, in which he names no names, but points to his "unfair treatment at certain places". In just a few sentences, Cabana changes the entire story of the night's main event from him fighting a WWE guy to two men wronged by the WWE doing what they do best in front of this audience, thus putting both himself and his opponent over in one fell swoop.

Grade: D+

Clad in his star-spangled singlet, Swagger makes his entrance being overly patriotic to the the point of obnoxiousness. HoH smarks are immediately set on fire and proceed to boo the man, but he ignores them and confidently struts to the ring.

QhWYsyg.jpg25UZG0h.pnglxAsaxb.jpg

"Boom Boom" Colt Cabana vs "The All-American American" Jack Swagger

After the initial exchange of blows, it becomes painfully apparent these two don't seem to click. The match is off to a slow start as the two competitors first feel each other's style out, but as it slowly progresses into bigger moves, neither man really feeds off the other's actions and the match is somewhat awkward to watch. There's no denying they can go, but it feels like two individuals doing their own thing separately, as opposed to two wrestlers working a match together. Even when Swagger does his Angle tribute by slamming on the Ankle Lock, the spot doesn't take off like it should. When he finally gets a weary Cabana in the Patriot Lock, the sight of the latter tapping out is a welcome finish and the show is off to an end that leaves a bittersweet taste.

House of Hardcore XXXVIII

Sat Wk 3 August 2018

Show Grade: D

Manhattan Center, NY, Tri State, United States

Attendance: 707, Viewership 10.780 (Shown on Twitch USA)

YTml2RL.jpg

Can't get more hardcore than the hardcore icon

As usual, Tommy Dreamer opens the show with a heartfelt speech to welcome the fans and thank them for supporting House of Hardcore. Dreamer gets a good pop, which makes the interruption all the more heated.

N4LYW04.jpg

What's the point of being hardcore if you're not cool?

"Carribean Cool" Carly Colon a.k.a. Carlito joins Dreamer in the ring with his trademark apple in hand. After an entertaining back and forth on the mic, Carlito ends up spitting his apple bite on Dreamer's face, which in turn fires Dreamer up and starts a brawl, much to the delight of the fans.

QhWYsyg.jpg

Boom boom, wait a minute

Carlito's scheduled main event opponent Colt Cabana is quick to join the fray, running into the ring to fend off his rival and protect the founder of HoH. The segment ends with Cabana staring down on Carlito as the latter retreats to the backstage area with a smile.

Middle Eastern Connection vs Ink Inc

Revisiting their match a month prior, Middle Eastern Connection and Ink Inc work the first match of the show as they pick up from where the intro segment left off to further fire up the fans. Fan opinion will be split about which of the two was better, but there was no denying that Moore looked a bit more sluggish in the sequel as age is apparently starting to take its toll on the quality of his high flying style. He did however manage to pick up the win for his team by hitting the Mooregasm on Akbar, making it a 2-0 for Ink Inc.

"The Tollman" Kevin "Killer" Kross vs Lance Anoa'i

Next up is a decent match between two youngsters out to prove themselves, though their approach couldn't be more different. Kross is mean, vicious and aggressive, as opposed to the slick moves and laid back attitude of Anoa'i, the contrast making for a nice touch to the match. Things look pretty even for the ten or so minutes this takes, before Kross locks in his Kross Arm Breaker for the submission win.

Bull James (f.k.a. Bull Dempsey) vs Willie Mack

If fans were happy to see the good old Carlito they knew at the start of the show, the same couldn't be said about Bull James/Dempsey who got a pretty mixed reaction. Some were glad to see him return to his old gimmick of bulldozing past the competition, some seemed disappointed he didn't use his comedy gold "Bullfit" character. That and him having somewhat of an off night in terms of performance didn't help his chances and despite a decent performance, Bull eventually ends up losing the match to Mack after the latter hit him with a Chocolate Thunder Bomb.

Jessicka Havok vs Barbi Hayden

A match building up on Hayden's bout with Alpha Female the previous month, this is the only women's match on the card and Havok heavily dominates most of it. Hayden's fight for redemption and ascenscion up the card soon turns into a struggle for survival as Havok repeatedly slams her on the mat, ringposts, barriers and ringside floor.

73h7KDY.jpg

Alpha Female is there once the fight spills outside the ring and has no qualms about chipping in to deliver some double team moves on Hayden, furious at her loss to the rookie one month ago. The ref immediately calls for the bell to disqualify Havok, but neither Destruction Duo member seem to care, as instead they proceed to drive Hayden through a table with a double chokeslam, getting much heat and generating sympathy for the Texas native.

Grade: D-

XBRlfhK.jpg25UZG0h.pngAH6Qgp4.jpg

Rampage Brown vs Matt Taven

Back to the States for a quick break from CMLL, Taven gets in the HoH ring to fight the devastating Rampage Brown. Taven's tenure south of the border quickly pays dividends as he seems to have been working on the high flying side of his arsenal, taking Brown by storm. After the initial salvo of aerial attacks though, Brown shuts Taven down and brings down the pace of the match to a slower, more ground and pound style that fits him. The fight slowly gets more and more climatic as Taven tries to mount a counteroffensive and Brown fights him back with slams and suplexes. This leads up to the finish of the match, the ending sequence being Taven's attack reversed into a cringe-worthy Brainbuster Suplex that keeps the man down long enough for Rampage Brown to score the pin.

Motor City Machine Guns vs Slophunters

The semi main event is the exact opposite of the match that preceded it, with all four men going all out from the opening bell to deliver exciting, high octane action packed with flips, stunts and double team moves. Being the least familiar with such a wrestling style, Reynolds is clearly struggling to keep up with the opposition and his partner, while the Guns are completely in the zone. Turning things to eleven, Sabin and Shelly use their superior teamwork, skill and experience to turn the match into a total car crash and get the win to steal the show and leave fans buzzing for the main event next.

"Boom Boom" Colt Cabana vs "Caribbean Cool" Carly Colon

Cabana and Carlito have a huge task ahead of them trying to one-up the match before them and it seems that taking their time to slowly build things up isn't working after the breathtaking semi. To make matters worse, Cabana is once again plagued by bad chemistry with his opponent, with whom he doesn't seem to click. Worse even, Carlito struggles to improvise and call the match in the ring, leading to some nasty botched spots and the main event falling apart. The nightmare ends well after twenty minutes, when Cabana puts Carlito in an Inverted Boston Crab to get the submission win, but no one in the building seems to be in any celebratory mood by that point.

<em>Insert machinegun sounds</em></p></div><p></p><p>The show opens with the Motorcity Machine Guns coming out to a loud reaction from fans in attendance. Taking turns on the mic, the Guns reveal that Sabin hasn't been cleared to wrestle tonight, due to an injury he received while working elsewhere since last month's House of Hardcore show. The announcement is met with much disappointment from the fans, to which the Guns promise they will be back to wrestle the Briscoes at HoH.</p><p>

<em>If there's one man who knows how to deal with chaos, it's Tommy Dreamer</em></p></div><p></p><p>Dreamer's music hits and he joins the Guns in the ring to flex his authority muscle as he confirms that Briscoes vs Guns will indeed be moved to next month's show, when Sabin hopefully will be able to wrestle. Not one to leave the fans with just a promise though, Dreamer also announces that since the Briscoes did show up tonight, they will be wrestling the Slophunters instead in the main event.</p><p>

<strong>JT Dunn vs Lance Anoa'i</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Dunn starts the match by hitting Anoa'i with his usual stiff, anger-fuelled strikes but this carries him away into a headbut, something every wrestling fan knows you never do when up against a Samoan. Anoa'i takes control of the match and hits some basic but crisp moves, showcasing his growth and development to much applause from the fans who have gotten warmer since the show's opening. His inexperience is his only glaring flaw however and Dunn exploits it to reverse into an Abdominal Stretch for the submission win, a victory he steals as he seemed to be rather sloppy throughout the match.</p><p>

<em>I'm a Barbi girl, in a Barbi world...</em></p></div><p></p><p>Barbi Hayden makes her entrance next, grabbing a mic to cut a quick promo and say she's wrestled all the big scary women House of Hardcore threw at her so far, sending the fans into a "she's hardcore" chant. Hayden takes it in for a moment, somewhat surprised by the reaction, before proceeding to wrap up her promo and say it won't be any different this time against Mickie Knuckles; win or lose, she's not afraid.</p><p>

<strong>Barbi Hayden vs Mickie "Moose" Knuckles</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Fearless indeed, Hayden hits Knuckles with all she's got, but nothing seems to get under the skin of the big monster, who scoops her up for a hard slam to put on the brakes. From there, she proceeds to destroy the Texan prospect, though the transition itself seems to drag a bit, interrupting the flow of the match. The rest is all Knuckles up to the Bridging German Suplex that earns her the pin, though Hayden earned her share of cheers thanks to her display of warrior spirit despite ultimately losing the match.</p><p>

<strong>Destruction Duo vs Lucha Sisters (Leva Bates & Mia Yim)</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Fans welcome the Lucha Sisters to House of Hardcore as they make their entrance, with Bates especially establishing a great connection to the audience as soon as she steps out of the curtain. Yim starts the match against Havok, blending strikes and grappling in a very Japanese, joshi manner. Havok responds in equally joshi 'monster heel' fashion, demolishing Yim with power moves that seem a bit alien to fans, forcing her to a quick retreat and tag. Alpha Female picks up where her partner left and works on Yim, though the latter is able to get a second wind and make the desperate hot tag to Bates, who comes in all fired up and after a long offensive sequence is able to roll up the German for the surprise pin.</p><p>

<strong>Katarina Waters vs Serena Deeb vs Tenille Dashwood</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Arguably three of the best women to regularly appear for House of Hardcore, these ladies set out to steal the show from the opening bell as they rush to attack each other with some rather impressive moves that make for a captivating opening sequence. Crowd is certainly buzzing after that start and explodes into cheers with every signature move or big spot executed in or out of the ring, including some new high risk aerial attacks that Dashwood pulls off to pop the audience. By the time she's able to hit Winters with the Roaring Elbow for the pin, her victory not only feels well deserved, but important too, thanks to the outstanding performance of all three competitors involved in the bout.</p><p>

<strong>Rampage Brown vs Eddie "Primo" Colón</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Recently released from the WWE after several years of service, Colón is out to prove his former employers' decision wrong. Despite getting a good reaction from the fans who seem to want him to succeed in the indy circuit, he has a hard task ahead as his scheduled opponent is none other than Rampage Brown. No longer limited by gimmick, creative and other issues, Colón shows a different face and slowly but surely manages to outwrestle Brown. This infuriates the Englishman and launches him into a flurry of brutal brawling offense, partially fuelled by his anger and in part being a change of the game as he forces Colón to wrestle a style that heavily favors Brown. A wise move from the big man, Brown manages to hit Colón with the Brainbuster Suplex and pin him for the win, though fans don't seem to share his feelings towards the loser, who they cheer for as he gets back on his feet to return backstage.</p><p>

<em>All rhyme, no reason</em></p></div><p></p><p>Led to the ring by his bodyguard and tag partner Shad Gaspard, Jayson Paul proceeds to cut a 'freestyle rap' promo, claiming Rhyme Tyme should be the ones to fight in the main event against the Briscoes. The idea of seeing Rhyme Tyme squashed by the Briscoe brothers sends fans into cheers, something Paul receives as support of his point, further trashing the Guns, Slophunters and Dreamer for the call he made, finally earning himself some heat as fans boo him to the back.</p><p>

<strong>Slophunters vs The Briscoes</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Slophunters may be trained by ECW original Mikey Whipwreck and House of Hardcore regulars, but there is no doubt whose side the fans are on once Jay and Mark Briscoe come out. Not wrestling the Guns as originally scheduled and having lost their main event spot, the Briscoe brothers proceed to vent their frustrations on Reynolds and Silver, who fight back but are clearly no match for one of the best tag teams in the indies, if not the entire business, right now. After a stellar performance from both Mark and Jay, the latter catches Alex Reynolds off guard and spikes him with a Double Underhook Piledriver while Mark hits a plancha to the outside in order to prevent Silver from breaking up the subsequent pin. Game, set and match, Briscoes.</p><p>

<strong>"Boom Boom" Colt Cabana vs Aldo "Adam" Rose</strong></p></div><p></p><p>New look and attitude from Rose, who seems to have shaved his long hair and bulked up since his departure from WWE. Between him and Cabana, fans expect at least one comedy spot but Rose seems to be super serious, all business, something that does earn him heel heat but also disappoints the fans who were hoping to see him return to his much lover 'party animal' gimmick. Rose's serious approach translates into the ring and his moveset too, quickly forcing Cabana to take him seriously and wrestle a proper competitive match. Maybe because of ring rust or maybe just because he's the better wrestler, Cabana comes out on top of the exchange, but can't lock in the Inverted Boston Crab as Rose uses his height advantage and length of his limbs to reach the ropes and force a break, so instead he resorts to using the Colt .45 in order to end the match and pick up the win.</p><p>

Alpha Female, Jessicka Havok and Mickie Knuckles vs Barbie Hayden, Leva Bates and Mia Yim</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Ever confident, Hayden insists she starts the match for her team, ready to take on any of her three opponents. The monster heels spend a moment discussing which one's going to have her fun first and Hayden uses the opportunity to charge all three of them, dropkicking Alpha Female onto her two teammates and knocking them off the apron. Hayden pushes the advantage her surprise attack gave her, but it only earns her a couple of shots before the big German no-sells her offense and retaliates with a powerbomb before mounting her for some ground and pound. Roaring in triumph, Alpha allows Hayden to make the tag and Yim gets down to business, chopping the German's vertical base with stiff but somewhat sloppy kicks to the legs. Limping and almost on one knee, Alpha Female tags in Knuckles. No strangers to each other, Knuckles tackles her opponent before pressing her advantage with some dirty brawling. Yim desperately kicks Knuckles in the head with an enzuguiri to create some space and rolling to her corner, tags in her Lucha Sister. Bates immediately springboards in to splash on Knuckles, who rolls aside to evade. Dragging Bates to her team's corner, Knuckles cuts the ring in half to take turns with Havok as they work on the singled-out babyface. Knuckles goes for a powerbomb looking for a pin, but Bates reverses into a sunset flip and a two count. Struggling to get back on her feet, Bates stretches out her hand to blindly tag Hayden in and the Texas native climbs the turnbuckle to catch a recovering Knucles with a headscissor into a roll up to steal the win in surprising fashion.</p><p>

Lance Anoa'i vs Brian Pillman Jr.</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Making his House of Hardcore debut, Pillman Jr deosn't pretend to be much more than what he really is, a green rookie descended from a great wrestler. Not getting any favors on name value alone or trying to act like his father, Pillman Jr. is welcomed by enthusiastic HoH fans in attendance before the match goes underway. Both he and Anoa'i are young talents on the rise and the bout shows just that; trading blows and some surprisingly crisp back and forth grappling, both men seem hungry to impress fans and establish themselves. It may be Anoa'i who takes the win once he hits his Wild Samoan Splash, but both he and Pillman have definitely made an impression and fans let them know, clapping and chanting for both rookies once the match is over, prompting them to shake hands before returning backstage.</p><p>

Katarina Winters vs Serena Deeb vs Summer Rae</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Not originally announced on the card, this bonus match doesn't really light up the fans until Summer Rae comes out to make it a Triple Threat. Understandably, Rae isn't up to par with the other two between the ropes, but in a twist of booking brilliance, Rae acts out to be everything hardcore fans have come to resent in a "WWE Diva" to earn herself some very real heat. This, alongside a couple of spots where she jumps into the fray to steal a win from Winters or Deeb, makes her two rivals realize what she's up to and forge an unlikely alliance to take her down. Of course, said alliance is only temporary and once Rae is out of the picture, Winters immediately turns on Deeb. Fully expecting her rival to act like that, Deeb is prepared and sidesteps to evade, causing Winters to crash onto a recovering Summer Rae. Deeb riles up the fans signalling it's time to end it and prepares to pounce, hitting Rae with a Spear as she's getting back on her feet to score the pinfall.</p><p>

JT Dunn and Kevin Kross vs T-N-T</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Another unannounced match, this ones pits unlikely but vicious teammates Dunn and Kross against the young but consistent tag team of the Dudley twins. Dunn starts the match with a series of strong style inspired kicks, but then is quickly outmatched by the sheer size and power of his opponent. T-N-T manhandle him to their corner for all their signature double team moves, Dunn however barely gets the knees up to counter the Wazaaaap! and throw the twins off their game just long enough to tag Kross in. With Terrence still holding his head groggy from the impact on Dunn's knees, Kross is free to focus his offense on Terrell without having to worry about tags. Smartly grounding his opponent, Kross gets two birds with one stone, eliminating Dudley's power move arsenal and doing plenty of damage with his vicious MMA-style basic but painful submissions. The finish however sees Kross whip Terrell onto his partner to knock Terrence off the apron, before catching him on the return with an armdrag into a pin. Holding Terrell Dudley's trunks for extra leverage, Kross gets the pin and immediately joins Dunn to retreat backstage, leaving T-N-T in the ring to ponder their defeat.</p><p>

Slophunters vs Colt Cabana and Tommy Dreamer</strong></p></div><p></p><p>The match itself isn't bad; Slophunters try to cut the ring in half while Cabana and Dreamer show heart despite their comedy antics or advanced age respectively, but the entire vibe of it seems uncertain and it seems to confuse fans. Silver and Cabana seem to be switching randomly from comedy wrestlers to straightforward competitors and Dreamer's totally inconsistent with picking either the "badass hardcore legend" or "veteran out to prove he still has it" approach and sticking with it. After ten or so minutes of good action but messy presentation and storytelling, Reynolds hits a Death Valley Driver onto the apron on Dreamer, before rolling him into the ring for the pin to end the match.</p><p>

Rolling into the ring as the Slophunters roll out, Daivari unloads on Dreamer and Cabana. Seemingly having checked out of the match, fans start a "missed your cue" chant, assuming Daivari was supposed to be involved in the finish of the match. Once he gets on the mic and orders them to shut up though, the segment takes a turn for the better. Free to shoot from the hip, Daivari does an excellent job of captivating the fan rage in the air and air his frustrations at Dreamer and Cabana for keeping the spotlight on themselves even if their matches suck while he once again wasn't booked to wrestle this month. The blurring of lines between script and reality is brilliant here and Daivari soon wins fans over thanks to his heated promo.</p><p>

Tenille Dashwood vs Madison Eagles</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Like Dashwood, Eagles is an Australia native, though one who got into the wrestling business somewhat earlier, so the two know each other from their very early days. This not only has the smarky House of Hardcore fans hot in expectation to see this despite no buildup whatsoever, it also means the two women are able to put together a great match. The initial exchange of grapples sees Eagles provide an answer to anything her opponent throws at her, which more or less sets the tone for the rest of the match. Trying to change the game, Dashwood chains together various combinations of strikes and throws, but every time Eagles is able to reverse and take her to the mat, where she dominates the submission game. Calm and collected, Eagles gets to work on Dashwood's right arm, something the announcing team comments is targeted to weaken her Roaring Elbow finisher. Screaming and struggling, Dashwood sells her rival's offense but is completely unable to reverse the momentum, before Eagles reverses her game into a backslide pin with some extra leverage from the ropes to get the win in what seems might turn out to be the night's show-stealing bout.</p><p>

Rampage Brown vs Willie Mack</strong></p></div><p></p><p>For all of Mack's fun loving antics and high flying moves, he can also be a straightforward rugged brawler and that's what he gets a chance to remind everyone here against Rampage Brown. Capitalizing on Brown's apparent underestimation of him at the start of the match, Mack surprises his opponent with some hard hitting strikes, leading into a powerslam-senton combination for an early two count. This seems to be the wake up call Brown needed, as he manages to block a superkick and whip Mack's leg to take him to the mat, where he locks in a single leg boston crab. Mack manages to get the rope break, but the damage might be done as he seems to favor his leg. Like a merciless predator, Brown pounces for another go, only for Mack to desperately punch and elbow his way out of the hold before Brown can ground him on the mat again. Switching back to his lucha-inspired arsenal, Mack struggles to pull off various spectacular moves, but each time Brown kicks out before the ref's count reaches three. Going for bigger and bigger moves every time, Mack ends up on the top turnbuckle for a dive or senton, only for Brown to display amazing strength and coordination as he catches Mack's neck and head mid-air to reverse into a Brainbuster Suplex for the pin.</p><p>

Three way tag dance</strong></p><p><strong>

Motor City Machine Guns vs The Briscoes vs Rhyme Tyme</strong></p></div><p></p><p>Jay Briscoe starts the match, demanding the big man Shad Gaspard comes in the ring to face him. Jay gets what he asked for and the two trade big strikes in the middle of the ring, before Sabin breaks it up with a blind tag on Gaspard. After trading a few blows of his own with Jay Briscoe, Sabin smartly changes the game to what fits him better, using his speed and agility to dodge Briscoe's strikes and lure him towards his corner, where he and Shelley can use quick tags to work on him. Soaring across the ring, Mark Briscoe comes flying to the rescue to break it up, allowing the opportunistic Jayson Paul to tag himself in and go to work over the wreckage. Already broken from the impact, Shelly takes a beating from Paul but in an explosive second wind comes whipped off the ropes to turn the tides with a rana that leaves both men on the mat. Sabin and Gaspard try to rile up their teammates to recovery and Shelley's the one able to crawl on top for a cover. Gaspard gets in the ring to break up the pin, but Sabin intercepts him with a slingshot dropkick, allowing the ref to get to three and eliminate Rhyme Tyme, cutting it down to the match fans really wanted to see, Guns versus Briscoes. The initial damage sustained by the Briscoes allows the Guns to get some offence rolling, but through sheer tenacity, Jay and Mark withstand the attack and even manage to land a few shots of their own until things are even and all four men lying on the mat. The bout reaches a climax as the competitors struggle to get back on their feet and trade blows, but a combination of the Jay Thriller and a big Frog Splash from Mark Briscoe is finally enough to keep the Guns down for the pin, giving the hard fought victory to the Briscoe brothers.</p><p>

It's not forgiving on my finances though and the Regional Battles are killing me, but let's see how long I can keep it up.</p>
