Friday Night Smackdown Results The show opened with 'Sexy Boy' as the WWF Intercontinental Champion made his way to the ring. HBK got the microphone and taunted Randy Savage. He talked about how great the Intercontinental title was and how a title is only as good as its champion. Michaels mentioned that when Savage was last WWF Champion, he wasn't in the main event of Wrestlemania VIII. He also mentioned that at Summerslam 1992, WWF Champion Randy Savage wasn't in the main event but the Intercontinental title was contested instead. He also said that since he's been WWF Intercontinental Champion, he has main evented events such as Survivor Series 1992. This brought The Macho Man out who had apparently heard enough. Savage said that Michaels impressed him last week and he was happy to admit that with HBK as WWF Intercontinental Champion, Smackdown had an equal to Raw's WWF Title, but with Savage as champion, they would have a superior champion. He then challenged HBK to put the title on the line at Summerslam. HBK accepted and before the show went to commercials, Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan hyped the appearance of Jerry Lawler on Piper's Pit later tonight. Match 1 Virgil vs The Beverley Brothers Possibly the worst match this diary will ever feature (and that's saying something). Thankfully, for wrestling fans, it ended after 4 minutes when a miscommunication by The Beverley Brothers coursed a collision and allowed Virgil to get the pinfall win. Winner: Virgil After the match, Ted Dibiase came out and said that The Beverley Brothers really were the worst tag team in the WWF and announced that, as punishment, they would face mystery opponents at Summerslam. Following the commercial break, Razor Ramon was called into The Million Dollar Man's office. Ted told Razor that he had been impressing him lately and he wanted him to end the winning streak of Tatanka. Razor said he'd love to, but asked what was in it for him. Ted Dibiase took out the same briefcase he showed IRS last week and showed it to Razor, concealing its contents from the cameras. Razor, like IRS before him, was mesmerised and said he'd do whatever it took to stop Tatanka. Dibiase looked pleased and whispered his plan in Ramon's ear. Match 2 Tatanka vs Barry Horrowitz A typical squash match was made slightly more entertaining by botched run ins from both Razor and IRS. Ultimately, there was little they could do but watch as Tatanka hit the Indian Death Drop and picked up the win. Winner: Tatanka Backstage, Bob Backlund challenged Diesel to face him at Summerslam. He said that he was so sure that he would be victorious, he would consider putting his career on the line, providing there was no interference in the match. Match 3 Damien Demento, Doink The Clown, IRS and Jim Neidhart vs High Energy and Men on a Mission This proved to be quite a fun match considering that they were clearly thrown together to make up the numbers and give everyone something to do. Owen Hart scored the pinfall on Demento for the win. Winners: High Energy and Men on a Mission After the match, Doink went under the ring, and came out duplicated again and the two Doinks began attacking High Energy. Before the next commercial break, the announcers hyped the main event of Diesel and Shawn Michaels vs Bob Backlund and Randy Savage. Coming back from the commercial and the ring is set up for the return of Piper's Pit. Roddy Piper came out to a huge reaction and introduced his guest Jerry 'The King' Lawler, who received a decent boo. Lawler said that he has just learnt that Summerslam would be coming from his kingdom of Memphis, Tennessee and he used this to officially announce his rematch with The Undertaker at that event. Piper warned Lawler of the dangers of wrestling a man who cannot feel pain and feels no guilt at the pain he delivers. Lawler said that in Memphis, he was undefeatable and was a 27 time USWA Champion. Piper mentioned that to have that many reigns meant he must've lost at least 27 times too. Piper said he and Lawler go back a long time and he didn't want The Undertaker to end his career, so he introduced a man who knew The Undertaker better than any...... the returning Jake 'The Snake' Roberts. Roberts got a huge reaction despite being overweight and out of shape. The Snake warned Lawler not to try to out wrestle The Undertaker, it couldn't be done, but told him that mind games were the way to go. He said if you can get the better of the mind games, there's no reason why you cant beat him, he also reminded Lawler that a win doesn't necessarily have to mean pinfall or submission. Lawler insulted the out of shape Jake Roberts and the two nearly came to blows, this led to Piper announcing that they would square off tonight in Jake's comeback match. Rick Steiner was backstage with Rob Bartlett who asked Rick who he would team up with tonight against The Quebecers. Rick said he had been scheduled to team up with Jake 'The Snake' Roberts, but now he'd talked himself into a match with Jerry Lawler, he'd had to resolve to plan b. He said his partner tonight would be... The Red Rooster. Rooster came clucking onto the screen as the show went to commercials. Match 4 Rick Steiner and The Red Rooster vs The Quebecers Naturally, Steiner started the match and performed admirably against The Quebecers on his own until after 5 minutes the numbers proved to much. After making the hot tag to The Red Rooster, Jacques and Pierre hit him with one double spinebuster and pinned the poor Rooster after just one move. Steiner was annoyed after the match but the Rooster didn't seem to care and clucked his way to the back. Winners: The Quebecers Suddenly the arena went black and the fans cheered, anticipating an appearance by The Undertaker. However, instead, an image of the WWF Title and one of the WWF Tag Team Titles, stolen on Raw, were shown on the Titantron. After the camera zoomed out, it was revealed that Nailz and Repo Man were behind the plot to steal the titles. They said they were now known as Crime and Punishment (Nailz's favourite Dostoevsky work, Repo Man prefers The Idiot) and would only return the titles if given a WWF contract. After the break, HBK and Diesel were shown backstage warming up in anticipation of the main event match. Match 5 Razor Ramon vs The '1-2-3' Kid Razor dominated and appeared to be focused on putting his previous loss to the kid out of his mind. However, just as he was setting up the Razor's Edge, Tatanka appeared and cost Razor the match as The Kid rolled him up for another shock 1-2-3. Winner: The '1-2-3' Kid After the match, Razor called Tatanka back to the ring to face him like a man. As Tatanka was doing so, IRS and Ted Dibiase appeared and beat him senseless as Razor laughed. Match 6 Jerry 'The King' Lawler vs Jake 'The Snake' Roberts A good match but Roberts was clearly off his game and botched several moves. Ultimately, interference from Double J Jeff Jarrett gave Lawler the win. The crowd chanted for the DDT but unfortunately did not receive one. Winner: Jerry 'The King' Lawler Backstage, Razor Ramon, IRS and General Manager Ted Dibiase were laughing about what they did to Tatanka and said that at Summerslam it would be Tatanka putting his undefeated streak on the line against both Razor Ramon and IRS in a handicap match. A video was shown on the Titantron of The Undertaker showing his in ring destruction and his out of ring mystery and this led into his entrance for the next match. Match 7 The Undertaker vs 'Double J' Jeff Jarrett The man who works at a funeral parlour defeated the man who is part time wrestler, part time country singer despite interference from the latter's mentor Jerry 'The King' Lawler. The Undertaker's dominance frightened Jeff Jarrett but Lawler smiled as The Undertaker left the ring, as if he had a plan in mind. Winner: The Undertaker After the commercial, Randy Savage was backstage with Bob Backlund and they cut a promo about their tag match which was coming up. Savage also told the fans of all the happy memories he had of his WWF Intercontinental Title reigns and promised those happy days would return after he wins the title again at Summerslam. The Undertaker and Paul Bearer were walking backstage when a young, blonde cheerleader popped out of nowhere and introduced herself as 'Katie Vick', a massive fan of The Undertaker's. She suggested that she and The Dead Man go out for 'sodas' and The Undertaker seemed interested before Paul Bearer dragged him away. Match 8 Shawn Michaels and Diesel vs Randy Savage and Bob Backlund A classy showing from 3 consumate professionals (and Diesel) produced an entertaining if not memorable main event. After 15 minutes of back and forth action, Savage hit his flying elbow drop on Diesel and covered him, but the referee wasn't looking, he was preoccupied with HBK and Backlund. HBK hit Backlund with a superkick and picked up the victory, much to the chagrin of Randy Savage who should've had the match won. Winners: Shawn Michaels and Diesel.
The Wrestling Newsletter - August 1993 A huge fight broke out after Friday Night Smackdown between former best friends Kevin Nash (known as Diesel) and Scott Hall (known as Razor Ramon). The pair, along with Shawn Michaels and Sean Waltman (1-2-3 Kid) were said to have formed a backstage group with a fair amount of power in the WWF, possibly a reason for them ending up on the same show. Details of the fight haven't been confirmed but apparently the wrestlers went to a bar after the show and Razor Ramon had a few too many, Diesel then tried to take him home but Razor refused and spat on the floor before pointing at his spit and saying 'See that? That's your mom that is'. This made Diesel snap and caused a legitimate punch up and the two are no longer speaking. The event will place severe strains on their mutual friends but the WWF is said to be continuing their individual pushes regardless of the events. On the wrestling side of things, however, the WWF have confirmed the signing of Road Warrior Animal which means that a deal with Hawk is surely near enough confirmed. The pair are likely to be the Beverley Brothers' mystery opponents at Summerslam which would place them on the Smackdown brand. Therefore expect The Quebecers to win the tag team titles at Summerslam and then feud with The Road Warriors. It was a shock to many to see Nailz return on Smackdown this week after his altercation with Vince McMahon last year. However, his fate could've been much worse. After news that Jimmy Del Ray is to redebut with a Top Gun inspired gimmick, it appears the WWF intend to push the movie parody gimmicks further with the creation of Dino-Man after this summer's blockbuster Jurassic Park. It was believed Nailz was destined to play this character as a form of punishment for his behaviour but now it appears the unfortunate recipient of this gimmick will be development talent Glen Jacobs. Smackdown was unmemorable this week but the return of Piper's Pit provided a few thrills as did the return of Jake 'The Snake' Roberts, despite the awful shape he is in. It also appears the WWF are acknowledging the awfulness of The Beverley Brothers and are playing up the idea that they are a poor team. Owen Hart is one superstar who looks particularly strong on Smackdown and the longer he is straddled with Koko B. Ware the worse it will be for his career in the long term. The girl named Katie Vick who showed an interest in The Undertaker this week on Smackdown was played by development talent Trish Stratus and is just 17 years old. So far it appears that Vick is in the services of Jerry 'The King' Lawler as he attempts to play mind games with The Undertaker ahead of their match at Summerslam
...
Raw Preview Due to his impressiveness in recent weeks, Scott Steiner has been selected to face Yokozuna tonight for the WWF Title in a rematch from 2 weeks ago. That match ended with interference from The Samoan Savages, Fatu, Samu and Giant Gonzales but Sgt. Slaughter has announced that they are bared from ringside tonight. Also, Mr. Perfect is one step away from a WWF Title match at Summerslam. All he has to do is defeat Headshrinker Samu. However, that is easier said than done as Samu is known for his visciousness and toughness. Tonight's Raw will be coming partly from Finland, as WWF cameramen flew out to Helsinki with Lex Luger in search of Ludvig Borga. Will Luger find him? Last week's debutants Splash Mountain, consisting of Kamala and Alaska will team with 'The Beast From The East' Bam Bam Bigelow to face his Summerslam opponent Bret Hart and The Smoking Gunns in six man tag action. With their scheduled Nuclear Warfare Match just two weeks away, tonight Adam Bomb and Crush will clash in tag team combat. Adam Bomb will team up with his manager, Harvey Whippleman's, other client, Giant Gonzales. Crush's partner will be Marty Jannetty and you have to believe that Johnny Polo will get involved and remain a thorn in the side of the rocker. All this and more on another action packed edition of Monday Night Raw! Monday Night Raw Results The show began with General Manager Sgt. Slaughter already in the ring with the WWF Title and one of the WWF Tag Team Titles on a table in front of him. He announced that President Jack Tunney had given in to Crime and Punishment (Nailz and Repo Man) and had offered them WWF contracts in exchange for the return of the two title belts. However, Sarge was pleased to announce that Ted Dibiase's Smackdown had landed Nailz and Repo Man so they wouldn't be 'stinking up your Raw television screens'. Slaughter then brought out Yokozuna and Scott Steiner to return their belts whilst building up their WWF Title confrontation in the main event tonight. The GM reiterated that Giant Gonzales and The Headshrinkers were barred from ringside to make sure things go as smoothly as possibly. Before the commercials, a video was shown on the Titantron of Lex Luger and WWF cameramen landing in Helsinki, Finland. Luger announced that in part tonight 'Raw Is Finland'. He then proceeded to ask people at the airport if they knew where Ludvig Borga could be found, including one man wearing a 'USA is NOT OK' t-shirt. However, Luger was unable to get an intelligent answer out of any of the people he asked and complained that 'these Finns can't speak American'. Match 1 Hacksaw Jim Duggan and The Bushwackers vs 'Dr. Love' Tom Pritchard, 'The Model' Rick Martel and Skinner The presence of so many poor gimmicks was overwhelming in this short match. Brother Love provided a lot of entertainment with his ringside antics. However, Hacksaw got the pinfall on Skinner after around 6 minutes following The Bushwackers giving everyone, including Brother Love, The Battering Ram. Winners: Hacksaw Jim Duggan and The Bushwackers Lex Luger was shown on the Titantron again on the streets of Helsinki asking people for directions to reach Ludvig Borga. Noone understood him until he was called into a back alley by a one eyed midget who introduced himself as 'Cheatumski'. Cheatumski said that if Lex could defeat a mystery opponent in an arm wrestling contest then he would reveal the whereabouts of Ludvig Borga. Luger agreed and then a giant man approached and cast a sinister shadow over Luger as Raw went to another commercial break. Backstage, Mr. Perfect was warming up for his all important match against Samu tonight which would secure his WWF Title shot at Summerslam. After some press ups, Perfect stood up and realised Samu had been watching him. Samu approached Perfect and they stared eachother down before Samu slapped his face and walked off. Match 2 Fatu vs Jimmy Snuka During the match, a little window in the top left of the screen opened (like it did in WWF programming in the late 1980s) and it showed Sgt. Slaughter talking to Jimmy Snuka, Slaughter said that Fatu was the only member of The Samoan Savages who he saw potential for good in and wanted Snuka to show him 'how a professional from the Pacific Isles should act'. The match itself was a standard TV match with little excitement. Fatu picked up the win after a top rope splash in what could be considered somewhat of an upset. Winner: Fatu The Titantron once again went "live" to Helsinki where Luger was in the middle of arm wrestling the giant man (whose features we have been able to see, only his gigantic forearm). After some terrible pained expressions of Lex's face, he managed to defeat the giant man and Cheatumski the one eyed midget agreed to tell Luger that he could find Ludvig Borga in the Borgaberg region of Helsinki but told Lex to be careful as it was full of people loyal to Ludvig Borga. Raw went to commercials as Lex was comprehending this. Match 3 Adam Bomb and Giant Gonzales w/Harvey Whippleman vs Crush and Marty Jannetty Before the match, Whippleman cut a bizaare promo about The Undertaker saying that the brand split had not extinguished their feud, it had merely delayed it and soon it would ignite again. The match was an absolute disaster and many people in the crowd cheered when Johnny Polo ran down to give Marty Jannetty a punch with brass knuckles leading to Adam Bomb getting the cover and the win. Winners: Adam Bomb and Giant Gonzales Backstage, Sgt. Slaughter caught up with Johnny Polo who was on his massive mobile phone, the Sarge told Polo that with these constant run ins, he's behaving like an active member of the roster and would be treated as such. He told Polo that he would face Marty Jannetty in a Free4All match before the upcoming WWF Summerslam. Once Again, Lex Luger's Finnish adventure is shown on the Titantron. This time Lex is passing a huge sign saying 'Welcome to Borgaberg'. The area is a desolute waste land but fortunately only a few metres into the area, Ludvig Borga is sat on a giant throne (think HHH at this year's Wrestlemania) surrounded by his cronies. Upon witnessing Luger, Borga sends his cronies after Lex who he dispatches with ease and then the two men begin to brawl all over Borgaberg as Raw goes to commercial. Match 4 Bam Bam Bigelow and Splash Mountain vs Bret Hart and The Smoking Gunns A 15 minute match, well over the standard of a normal TV match was undoubtedly helped by the chemistry between Bret and Bam Bam and the experience of Kamala and Alaska (John Tenta/Earthquake). Bret was unable to apply the Sharpshooter on Bam Bam at several points in the match was forced to look for another way to victory. This appeared when he set Bam Bam up for a top rope superplex. However, Bam Bam countered, pushing Bret to the ground and hitting his top rope flying head butt for the win. Winners: Bam Bam Bigelow and Splash Mountain After the match, Bam Bam picked Bret up and stood him in the middle of the ring. Then Kamala and Alaska stood in opposing corners of the ring and ran towards eachother sandwiching the poor Hitman in a move they call The Splash Mountain. After the break, The Samoan Savages were shown backstage clashing heads with Samu in attempt to psyche him up for his crucial battle with Mr. Perfect. Match 5 Mr. Perfect vs Samu Perfect managed to drag a reasonable good match out of Samu and Afa's constant interference lead many in attendance to belive that Mr. Perfect may actually lose. However, this was to be the case as after 8 minutes, Samu fell victim to the Perfect Plex and Mr. Perfect booked his space in the main event at Summerslam Winner: Mr. Perfect After the match, Perfect celebrated wildly and left the ring through the crowd in a great moment. Back in Finland, Luger and Borga had brawled their way to a bridge, Lex hit his Running Forearm and knocked Borga off the bridge but Ludvig managed to claw on to something. Borga begged for help and Lex took his hand. Lex said he would help him out of this if he agreed to a one on one match at Summerslam, USA vs Finland. He said that if Borga lost, he must wear Red, White and Blue and sing the American National Anthem. However, if Lex lost, he had to sing the Finnish national anthem and Borga would be able to retire to Finland with his 100% record intact. Borga agreed and Lex pulled him up. The two then shook hands but Borga double crossed Lex and threw him off the bridge, but knowing the WWF, it was an awful stunt double wearing a ridiculous blonde wig. Backstage, Todd Pettengil caught up with Bret Hart in the infermary who was receiving treatment for his injured ribs at the hands of Bam Bam Bigelow and Splash Mountain. Todd asked Bret what he felt about his chances at Summerslam in the number one contendership match after Bam Bam had pinned him tonight. Bret said that Bam Bam was without doubt the toughest man he had ever faced and he had underestimated him tonight. Bret said he knew that Bam Bam was able to counter the Sharpshooter and he had to think of another way to beat him. However, Bret promised that the fans would see one of the greatest matches of the decade at Summerslam as both men would bring their A game and leave it all in the ring and Bret promised when the dust settled, he would be the number one contender. Match 6 WWF Title Match: Scott Steiner vs Yokozuna (c) The best match of Yokozuna's title run to date was also a career best from Steiner, in singles competition anyway. After a back and forth exchange of high impact moves, it appeared Steiner had the match won when he locked Yokozuna into a camel clutch like manoevre. However, 2 men interfered and attacked Steiner. JR was screaming about the injustice as the DQ bell rang, stating that this match was scheduled to be under no interference rules. McMahon said that it was only Giant Gonzales and The Headshrinkers who were barred from ringside before identifying the two men as the returning Haku and The Barbarian. Winner: Scott Steiner by DQ After the match, Yokozuna, Haku and The Barbarian continued their assault on Scott Steiner until Mr. Perfect ran down to help out. After getting a few punches in, the numbers game proved too much for Perfect and he also fell victim to an assault. Suddenly, new music sounded and The Warlord (complete with metal breastplate, metal face mask and wand) ran down to ringside. JR complained that The Warlord was here to help his former Powers of Pain buddy, The Barbarian. Vince McMahon said that this wasn't The Warlord this was 'THE ULTIMATE WARLORD!'. The Ultimate Warlord came to the rescue of Scott Steiner and Mr. Perfect and ran Yokozuna, Haku and The Barbarian out of the ring as Raw went off the air. Quick Results: Hacksaw and The Bushwackers defeated Prichard, Martel and Skinner Fatu defeated Jimmy Snuka Adam Bomb and Giant Gonzales defeated Crush and Marty Jannetty Bam Bam and Splash Mountain defeated Bret Hart and The Smoking Gunns Mr. Perfect defeated Samu Scott Steiner defeated WWF Champion Yokozuna by DQ
The Wrestling Newsletter – August 1993 This weeks Raw was surely proof that the draft split is ruining an already poor roster. The ‘Raw Is Finland’ segments were just embarrassing and it is unclear whether or not the WWF was copying WCW’s horrendous movie driven PPVs or if they were mocking them. One thing for sure is that the evil one eyed midget ‘Cheatumski’ was a direct rip off of Cheatum from the WCW movies but was not played by the same actor. The return of the Haku was not surprising but his apparent coalition with The Barbarian was unexpected as was the face comeback of The Warlord as The Ultimate Warlord. This awful gimmick is sure to fall flat on its face and what’s most embarrassing is that it appears he is line for a push. It is believed when the idea was initially conceived, The Ultimate Warlord was scheduled to be a glorified jobber, used to make a fool of The Warrior. However, the push appears to be the result of an argument that The Warrior had with Vince McMahon. McMahon claimed that he was responsible for the success of the gimmick, where as Jim Hellwig believed that it was he who made the Ultimate Warrior gimmick successful. McMahon retorted that he could give anyone the same gimmick and they would get over, it appears this is what has happened with The Ultimate Warlord. Two things to remember are that, although The Warlord is arguably better than The Warrior in the ring, he is still sub par and he lacks any of the charisma that The Warrior possessed. Another thing to consider is that The Warlord is already 37 years old and can’t have too long left at the top. The WWF is doing little right at the moment but it’s a shame the one thing they have done well is failing to get over with the crowd. Bam Bam Bigelow’s feud with Bret Hart has already produced some great matches and decent interviews and their scheduled match at Summerslam is a shoe in for match of the night but for some reason the average fan doesn’t seem to care. Hopefully, the two talented wrestlers can bring the crowd round in the coming weeks as this feud is one of the few reasons to watch WWF at the moment. WWF are said to be on the trail of Mexican superstars Konnan and Eddie Guerrero and also Art Barr and Louie Spiccoli, currently wrestling in Mexico. Konnan has wrestled for the WWF before in a short run as Max Moon, as yet noone knows if the WWF intend to revive that gimmick. In development news, SMW talents Rhino and Adam Copeland played two of Ludvig Borga’s henchmen in the Finland segments. The rest were played by local Finns. Also, the giant man who arm wrestled Lex Luger was development talent Paul Wight. This was a one off appearance and Wight is going straight back to SMW after Raw. The reason his appearance was concealed is that the WWF sees him as a potential new Andre The Giant and didn’t want any fans to remember him when he debuts, which is likely to be about two years away.
...
The Wrestling Newsletter – August 1993 USWA Special A few weeks ago in the Wrestling Newsletter we promised you an in depth look at some of the WWF’s new developmental signings and today we bring you the first part of our findings by looking at the USWA, Memphis territory. The USWA is the WWF’s premier developmental league and most of the wrestlers down in Memphis are scheduled to be brought up to the main roster before their counterparts in SMW. The roster features a few stars who have already graced national television but also some newer names. Bobby Duncam Jnr – The son of the legendary Bobby Duncam Jnr. He’s 28 years old and teams with John Layfield in a cowboy duo that have previously held the GWF Tag Titles. He is said to be a competent mid level wrestler and it is believed that is where he will stay. 6/10 for potential. Brian James – Another son of a legendary wrestler, Bob Armstrong. Brian is said to be very charismatic and able on the microphone but his physique is not up to the standard the WWF require. With a good gimmick, his stock could rise rapidly after he debuts. 8/10 for potential. Dean Malenko – Another development talent, another son of a legendary wrestler, Boris Malenko. He is very small and doesn’t have the standard WWF charisma but he is simply superb in the ring. Currently working as Dimitri Malenkov, a Russian mafia character in an attempt to make him stand out. 8/10 for potential. Giant Silva – A huge man standing at 7’3’ and weighing 400 pounds. He is 30 years old and originates from Brazil. His only valuable asset is his size and he seems unlikely to make the main roster as long as Giant Gonzales is around as the two are too similar and the audience would struggle to differentiate between them. 7/10 for potential. Glen Jacobs – A few weeks ago, we reported that Glen Jacobs was scheduled to debut soon as Dino Man, a Jurassic Park inspired gimmick. However, it appears these plans have been scrapped in favour of making the 6’11, 25 year old play Isaac Yankem DDS, the evil dentist. 9/10 for potential. Jerry Lynn – A superb mat wrestler, supposedly weeks away from a call up to the main roster. However, like Malenko, he lacks that extra charisma to make him stand out and many fear he may blend in with the other average workers on the WWF roster. He achieved mediocre fame for his series of fantastic matches with Sean ‘123 Kid’ Waltman in the past 18 months. 7/10 for potential. John Layfield – The tag partner of Bobby Duncam Jnr utilising a standard cowboy gimmick. He is seen as a mid level tag wrestler but is believed to have more charisma than his partner and if either are going to make it to the top, it seems it will be Layfield. 7/10 for potential. Juventud Guerrera – A 19 year old Mexican luchadore who is son of Fuerza Guerrera, a wrestling legend. He is believed to have an awful attitude backstage but his high flying skills are unparalleled. Indeed, he is so talented that many WWF officials fear that if he makes national television he will steal all the attention from the main eventers with his jaw dropping moves. 9/10 for potential Kendall Windham – You will know his brother Barry, the WCW superstar. Kendall is the less talented younger brother, who seems destined to job to the stars on WWF national television. 3/10 for potential. Marcus Bagwell – The WWF officials are said to be very high on 23 year old Bagwell who was dismissed by WCW earlier this month. He has a magnificent physique which explains the WWF’s fascination but his skills are nothing exceptional. Currently utilising the gimmick of ‘The Narcissist’ and is on a massive unbeaten run in the Memphis area. 10/10 for potential. Mike Awesome – Related by name, not blood, to Hulk Hogan, it appears he will debut as ‘Irish’ Mick Hogan, a hard hitting street thug from Belfast. He is a talented brawler and has an imposing figure. He also has vast hardcore experience from his time in Japan and if that style takes off in the WWF, he may have a bright future. 8/10 for potential. The Moondogs – The Memphis legends are working as main event vicious heels in USWA and as an opening comedy act pair of jobbers in the WWF, simultaneously. Their experience is being used to train younger tag teams about life in and out of the ring. 2/10 for potential. Paul Levasque – One of the brighter prospects in wrestling today. Levasque is a great wrestler with decent charisma and is destined for big things. Currently he is a main event heel is USWA who is manipulating The Moondogs for his own profit. The sky could be the limit when he makes it to the WWF, which he almost definitely will. 10/10 for potential. Paul Wight – The giant man who appeared on Raw in the awful ‘Raw Is Finland’ segment. Wight has yet to wrestle in anything more than dark matches for USWA as he is so green but his huge size has already lead to comparisons with Andre The Giant. It is believed the WWF is very high on him and see him as a cornerstone for their future. 10/10 for potential. Rhino – At just 18, he one of the younger members of the USWA, but he is the owner of one of the finest builds in wrestling. He has battled Mike Awesome in some memorable hardcore rules matches and should have a good future if the WWF keep his man beast gimmick when he comes to debut. 9/10 for potential. Sean O’Haire – One half of the Scream Team with Shawn Stasiak. The tandem play young, good looking, male cheerleaders who get the fans chanting their names throughout their matches. Is said to be a few months away from a call up to the main roster with Stasiak and SMW talents Mark Jindrak, Mike Sanders and Chuck Palumbo as reported weeks ago in The Wrestling Newsletter. 7/10 for potential. Shawn Stasiak – Son of Stan ‘The Man’ Stasiak, one of the all time greats. His son doesn’t seem to have the skills of his father but he isn’t bad and has a good figure. A potential wild card future WWF main eventer. 7/10 for potential. Shelton Benjamin – At just 18, little is known about Shelton except that he is an African American and has one several South Carolina amateur wrestling titles. Could be a major prospect for the WWF. Not enough facts available to rate potential. Rick Titan – Brought to the USWA on the recommendation of Mike Awesome, his former tag team partner. The two are very alike in the ring. However, the WWF are said to have a few problems with Titan’s look as he resembles Razor Ramon to the extent that many would feel they were related and the WWF have no plans to give Razor on screen relatives. For the record, the two are not related. 7/10 for potential. Ultimo Dragon – A hugely talented wrestler, loved in Mexico and Japan. The WWF know that he cannot learn anything in development except the ways of the US wrestling business and are looking for a story to introduce him at the moment. The WWF are quite high on him and see him as a hero to the under 12 demographic. 8/10 potential. Vampiro – A Canadian grappler with an interesting vampire gimmick. Is rumoured to be lined up for a feud with The Undertaker in the future. He is reasonably talented and charismatic and if the fans take to his gimmick like they did to The Undertaker’s, he could be massive. 8/10 for potential. In conclusion, it seems the USWA are reasonably talented bunch, with a few weak links and a few standouts. Expect around 75% to make it to national television and about 40% to make it to national television in the next year. To summarise, here are our ratings of the USWA talents. Best In Ring: Ultimo Dragon (Dean Malenko runner up) Worst In Ring: Paul Wight (Giant Silva runner up) Best Mic Skills: Brian James (Paul Levasque runner up) Worst Mic Skills: Giant Silva (Dean Malenko runner up) Best Gimmick: Vampiro (Rhino runner up) Best Physique: Marcus Bagwell (Mike Awesome runner up) Most Likely to Succeed in WWF: Marcus Bagwell (Paul Levasque runner up) Least Likely to Succeed in WWF: Kendall Windham (Bobby Duncam Jnr runner up) Darkhorse tip for future success: Shawn Stasiak (John Layfield runner up)
...

That is an awesome post, with a great preview into the future of your promotion. I can see Kendell and Duncam forming a team and ruling the WWF like The Blackjacks. They could feud with the Smoking Gunns, it's got money-spinner written all over it.
Friday Night Smackdown Preview With the ongoing battles between Randy Savage and Shawn Michaels and Bob Backlund and Diesel confirmed for Summerslam, the penultimate Smackdown before the Summer’s biggest event will feature all men in singles action. The Macho Man Randy Savage will take on the dominant Diesel and in the main event Shawn Michaels will defend the WWF Intercontinental Title against WWF legend Bob Backlund. With the confirmation that Tatanka will face the combination of IRS and Razor Ramon in a handicap match at Summerslam, tonight will see The Native American take on Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart whilst IRS and Razor make their tag team debut against High Energy, the team who were attacked by the two Doinks last week. Last week saw the return to the WWF of Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts who was unable to defeat Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler. That match also saw interference from Jeff Jarrett, Lawler’s protégé. Tonight, Roberts will take on Jarrett and aim to get a measure of revenge. Speaking of Lawler, he has been given the opportunity to name The Undertaker’s opponent for tonight. It seems that Lawler is intent on playing mind games with The Undertaker ahead of their Summerslam clash in Lawler’s kingdom of Memphis. What impact will The Undertaker’s admirer Katie Vick have on the proceedings? The Quebecers have been on a roll of late going into their WWF Tag Team title match at Summerslam with the current champs The Steiners and Raw’s The Headshrinkers. Last weak, Jacques and Pierre defeated Rick Steiner and The Red Rooster and tonight they will face Rick Steiner and Virgil. Also, Mabel and Mo of Men On A Mission will have a huge special announcement on Piper’s Pit! Friday Night Smackdown Results The show began with Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan welcoming us live from Puerto Rico. The lights in the arena went out and the fans cheered ecstatically in anticipation of The Undertaker’s entrance. As is now the norm, a 2 minute video package that differs slightly each week was shown on the Titantron before The Undertaker made his way out to the ring to wait for his mystery opponent to be selected by Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler. Lawler’s music then played and he made his way onto the stage with his monkey boy, or protégé, Jeff Jarrett. Lawler told The Undertaker that he had taken the advice Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts had given him last week on Piper’s Pit and he was going to toy with The Undertaker’s mind ahead of their clash at Summerslam. He said that was why he selected the master of mind games to be The Undertaker’s opponent for the night. Without further ado, Lawler introduced ‘From The Outer Reaches Of Your Mind….. Damien Demento!’ Match 1 The Undertaker vs Damien Demento No surprises here that The Undertaker won after around 5 minutes and dominated from start to finish getting the pin after a chokeslam and tombstone piledriver. Winner: The Undertaker After the match Taker did his eyes rolled into his head routine and knelt down in worship of the urn. Jeff Jarrett, watching from the stage, looked fearful but Lawler was unphased, he merely tapped the side of his head indicating he had the upper hand as Smackdown went to commercials. After the break, The Undertaker was shown with Paul Bearer putting their bags into the hearse, getting ready to leave for the night. Out of nowhere, perky, teenage cheerleader Katie Vick appeared and told The Undertaker how good he was tonight and asked if he wanted to go out tonight as she hears Puerto Rico has an excellent night life (cheap pop). The Undertaker agreed walked away arm in arm with Katie Vick, much to the dismay of Paul Bearer who yelled to The Undertaker that Katie was being paid by Jerry Lawler as part of his mind games. The warning fell on deaf ears though. Match 2 The Beverley Brothers vs The ‘1-2-3’ Kid and The Red Rooster A short but reasonably fun match featuring The Beverley Brothers botching several double team moves deliberately, resulting in The Genius yelling disparaging comments. The Red Rooster did nothing all match and eventually he went clucking off down the aisle leaving The Kid to fight alone. The Kid did very well and eventually scored the pinfall on Blake Beverley with a roll up. Winners: The ‘1-2-3’ Kid and The Red Rooster After the match, The ‘1-2-3’ Kid grabbed the microphone. He announced that this was his first taste of tag team action and he liked it, but unfortunately he needed a better partner than The Red Rooster. He told the crowd that next week he would debut his new partner and they would ‘revolutionise tag team wrestling’ as we know it. Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan were shown sitting at the announce table talking about the IC Title match between Shawn Michaels and Bob Backlund and the huge match between Randy Savage and Diesel. Heenan plugged Diesel, saying he’d never met a man who combined size and ability so well and told the world not to be surprised when he beats Savage tonight and Backlund and Summerslam. After a short advert break, Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts was shown backstage, cursing his performance in his re-debut last week against Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler. He muttered to himself that he owed his God more than that, this brought Roddy Piper over, who told Roberts that it was just ring rust and he shouldn’t let it get him down. Roberts wondered aloud if he should even be in the WWF. Piper told him that Lawler was a tricky opponent who would do whatever it took to win and there was no shame in losing to him, he said that tonight Roberts would face the rookie Jeff Jarrett who was like cannon fodder to a real pro like Jake. Piper said he was sure Jake would be smiling by the end of the night, because he’s overcome his demons and deserves it. Match 3 Tatanka vs Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart A surprisingly good television style match with a chaotic finish featuring botched run ins from both IRS and Razor Ramon trying to cost Tatanka the match and, with it, his undefeated record. However, neither was successful and one Indian Death Drop later saw Tatanka pick up the win and continue his monumental streak. Winner: Tatanka After the match, Ted Dibiase came onto the stage where IRS and Ramon had retreated to. He told Tatanka that he was banned from interfering in IRS and Razor’s tag team debut against High Energy later tonight and to make sure this was enforced he was ejecting Tatanka from the building. A team of security guards came out, handcuffed Tatanka and escorted him from the ring as Smackdown went to commercials. Coming back from the break and the ring is set up for Piper’s Pit. Roddy Piper came out to a big pop and said it felt good to be back in Puerto Rico. He then introduced his guests for tonight who had a major announcement for the fans… Men On A Mission! Mabel and Mo rapped their way to the ring before engaging in a truly embarrassing segment with Piper made worse by the fact that Roddy clearly barely knew who they were or what their characters or gimmicks were about. However, Piper was still his usual charismatic, funny self. The huge announcement was that both Mabel and Mo are scheduled to appear in an episode in the next series of ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ which no-one really cared about. Mabel said that they couldn’t reveal the plot but Will drops out of school to become a wrestler, managed by Carlton, a fact they conceal from Uncle Phil. After the announcement, Mo asked a blatantly scripted question about when Piper will return to the ring in the WWF. Piper merely winked and said ‘Soon enough, boy-o, soon enough’. Match 4 Randy Savage vs Diesel After the commercial break, this match was just about to get underway. Savage did a good job of getting a decent match out of Diesel but it was nothing spectacular. Shawn Michaels was at ringside and provided constant interference, which brought out Bob Backlund to even the sides. The finish was confusing with several ref bumps and lots of interference but it was Savage who scored the win following his flying elbow drop, much to the annoyance of HBK. Winner: Macho Man Randy Savage After the match, a jealous Diesel and Shawn Michaels attacked Savage and Backlund and a wild brawl erupted between the sides. This brought out Ted Dibiase who announced that in order to prevent this happening in the main event, Savage and Diesel would be handcuffed to the ring posts in the HBK vs Backlund match for the WWF IC Title. He also announced that his ‘Power 6’ that is Savage, Michaels, Backlund, Diesel, Lawler and The Undertaker would all be in singles action next week against unnamed opponents. A short scene was shown on the Titantron featuring The Undertaker and Katie Vick at a local restaurant. Katie ordered oysters and the The Undertaker asked for a cow’s heart, soaking in blood. The waiter looked confused and Katie told him that the Dead Man meant steak. Match 5 IRS and Razor Ramon vs High Energy A good quality match featuring Ted Dibiase and his security guards standing around the ring to prevent Tatanka from appearing. Owen Hart meant toe to toe with the more experienced Schyster and Ramon and put up a great fight, but his partner Koko B.Ware was not as impressive and it was he who fell victim to The Razor’s Edge and was pinned. Winners: IRS and Razor Ramon After the match, Owen looked visibly annoyed at Koko B.Ware claiming he didn’t put up much of a fight. Koko pushed Owen away and yelled something about Owen not having his back. After the break, Ted Dibiase was sitting in his office doing some meaningless paperwork when Jerry Lawler entered and asked why the GM wanted to see him. Ted told Lawler that he was impressed with his mind games on The Undertaker and asked where he found Katie Vick. Lawler said he had nothing to do with Katie’s interest in The Dead Man and he had his own mind games planned. Ted said he didn’t believe him. Ted brought out a form and told Lawler to sign it, to state that the company would not be responsible for any injury Lawler might receive at the hands of The Undertaker, as he thought Taker would cause him great pain when whatever mind games he had planned with Katie Vick were over. Backstage, Owen Hart caught up with Koko B.Ware and apologised for his actions earlier. He said that he was out of line and couldn’t blame the loss on Koko. Koko said the reason he reacted so angrily was that it’s all true. He said Owen is more talented than him and he’s holding Owen down. Owen said that’s nonsense and teaming with Koko had taught him more than anyone else he’s ever tagged with. Match 6 The Quebecers vs Rick Steiner and Virgil Rick Steiner, half of the WWF Tag Team champions, looked particularly intense and psyched up for this match, taking it to Jacques and Pierre at every available point. However, the experience and team work between The Quebecers told by the end and Pierre rolled up Virgil for the win, giving them a huge advantage ahead of the Three Team Elimination Battle Royale at Summerlsam for the WWF Tag Team Titles between The Head Shrinkers, The Quebecers and The Steiner Brothers. Winners: The Quebecers Another short video sequence was shown on the Titantron featuring The Undertaker and Katie Vick on their date. They had moved on from the restaurant to a theme park. Katie begged the Taker for a ride on the Ghost Train. It was a typically poor ride featuring spiders dropping down from the ceiling. It ended with a skeleton jumping out at them. However, instead of making The Undertaker scream, the skeleton screamed upon sight of The Undertaker, which made Katie laugh and she put her arm around the dead man as Smackdown went to commercials. Match 7 Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts vs Jeff Jarrett Roberts still looked in terrible shape, with a large beer belly. However, he was still able to put on a decent encounter with the young Jarrett. That said, he did not perform the DDT that the fans longed for and ultimately tapped out to a figure four leg lock in an embarrassing loss, without any interference from Jerry Lawler. Winner: Jeff Jarrett After the match, Jake looked visibly upset with his performance and pointed to the sky, indicating God before saying a small prayer. Backstage, Shawn Michaels was with Rob Bartlett. Shawn said that he was the future of the WWF and a win against Randy Savage at Summerslam would solidify his main event status. He referred to Savage and Backlund as ‘the old guard’ and told them to make way for the new generation of Smackdown stars. Match 8 WWF Intercontinental Title Match: Shawn Michaels vs Bob Backlund A decent match was made more entertaining by the antics of Savage and Diesel who were handcuffed to the ring posts. The match was an evenly paced affair and the ending was clean with HBK hitting the superkick he’s been using lately and picking up the pin. Winner: Still WWF Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels After the match, Shawn Michaels revealed the key to Diesels cuffs. He freed him and then the duo cuffed Backlund to the same post as Savage and began assaulting them, culminating in HBK hitting a superkick into both of their faces as Smackdown went off the air. Quick Results The Undertaker defeated Damien Demento The '1-2-3' Kid and The Red Rooster defeated The Beverley Brothers Tatanka defeated Jim Neidhart Randy Savage defeated Diesel IRS and Razor Ramon defeated High Energy The Quebecers defeated Rick Steiner and Virgil Jeff Jarrett defeated Jake Roberts Shawn Michaels defended the WWF Intercontinental Title against Bob Backlund
The Wrestling Newsletter - August 1993 Another week, another lacklustre Smackdown. To be fair, the show had some decent matches but it was so predictable, even an absolute idiot could have predicted the outcome of all the matches and it failed to make anyone excited for Summerslam with just one show from each brand left until the PPV. For those wondering where Doink was this week, he defeated Greg Valentine in a dark match as The Hammer continues his push for fitness in order to appear on television. Doink had been on a minor push with the addition of his clone, played by Steve Keirn or Raw's Skinner, but he was booked in a six man tag match on Raw and the WWF didn't want him working both shows in the same week. The Undertaker is the most over superstar on the entire roster, possibly the most over in the USA but for some idiotic reason, the WWF are wasting him in this moronic story with Katie Vick. However, it is possible this storyline could have an interesting twist as Jerry Lawler has claimed nothing to do with Vick's interest in Taker so unless he's lying, which would be so boring, there's room for this story to be salvaged yet. Bob Backlund is an all time great and his performance in the Royal Rumble was inspiring, but lately he has become so boring and his match with Diesel at Summerslam is a potential worst match of the night despite the sizable build up it has been given. In a way, it wouldn't be too much of a shame if Backlund kept his word and retired if he loses. There were tensions between High Energy this week, once again sparking the idea that Owen Hart is in line for a big singles push on Smackdown to avoid the shadow of his brother Bret on Raw. That is something we at The Wrestling Newsletter would love to see as Koko B.Ware has been holding Owen down for too long. For those hoping to spot some of the development talents mentioned last week on Smackdown, we are afraid you are out of luck. The security guards Ted Dibiase used to escort Tatanka from the building and then later to guard the ring from Tatanka's interference were played by local Puerto Rican wrestlers and the venues genuine security guards. The tag team partner that The '1-2-3' Kid is set to debut next week is none other than Jerry Lynn, who we profiled last week. Lynn is set to be nicknamed The 'A-B-C' Boy, a particularly dumb gimmick, but if it gets his talent on national television, we shan't complain. Men On A Missions 'huge announcement' that they will guest star on The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air next year has to go down as one of the biggest anti climaxes in WWF history. However, you have wonder how huge an announcement from Men On A Mission could be. Rumour has it that the episode will feature Will Smith fighting Mabel with Mo as his manager in a wrestling match so expect Mabel to receive a huge push when it airs early 1994.
...
Monday Night Raw Preview After the shocking debuts of Haku, The Barbarian and The Ultimate Warlord in the climax of last week's Raw, the main event tonight will be a huge six man tag match. On one side, the reigning WWF Champion Yokozuna will team with the newest members of his Samoan Savages stable, Haku and The Barbarian, collectively known as The Faces Of Fear. Their opponents will be the number one contender for the WWF Title Mr. Perfect, one half of the WWF Tag Team Champions, Scott Steiner, and The Ultimate Warlord. This one is bound to go down in the history books. Last week, Lex Luger travelled to Finland to track down Ludvig Borga. Luger and Borga agreed to settle their dispute at Summerslam and tonight they will sign the contracts for that match. Also, Lex will prepare for Borga by wrestling another evil non American superstar, Giant Gonzales, which is set to be a hard hitting brawl. Bret 'The Hitman' Hart and Bam Bam Bigelow will clash at Summerslam for the number one contendership to the WWF Title. However, their feud wasn't personal until last week when Bam Bam and Splash Mountain injured the ribs of The Hitman. We all know that Bret is a fierce competitor though and that is why tonight he will face 'The Model' Rick Martel in singles action. These two Canadian stars are bound to raise the roof in Anaheim, CA. Meanwhile, Bam Bam Bigelow looks to prolong the recent roll he's been on going into Summerslam, but do so, he must take on Billy Gunn of The Smoking Gunns. Another blockbuster match at Summerslam features Crush taking on Adam Bomb in a Nuclear Warfare match, which means no countouts, no disqualifications and no rules. Tonight, both superstars will be in singles action, Crush will face the impressive Kamala of Splash Mountain, whilst Adam Bomb will take on Marty Jannetty and who knows what role Johnny Polo will play in this one. With the 3 Team Battle Royale at Summerslam for the WWF Tag Team Titles between The Steiners, The Quebecers and The Headshrinkers just around the corner, Fatu and Samu will be looking to build some momentum tonight as they take on The Bushwackers. Will the Samoans be too much for The Bushwackers, or will the veterans teach The Headshrinkers a lesson or two? Find out the answers to those questions and many more in another action packed episode of Raw! Monday Night Raw Results The show opened with Sgt. Slaughter already in the ring with a table, two chairs and two contracts. He then introduced Lex Luger and Ludvig Borga and told them to make the match at Summerslam official. Both superstars came down and took their places. Whilst Lex and Ludvig perused the contracts, Slaughter went over the match stipulations. If Lex won, then Borga must remain a WWF superstar, he must wear red, white and blue attire and he must sing the American national anthem on Raw next week. However, if Borga won, he would be able to retire from the WWF with his 100% record intact and Lex must sing the Finnish national anthem. Both men signed the contracts and then Borga threw his pen at Luger’s face. This upset Luger who sprang up to his feet and engaged in an intense face off with Borga. The two were about to come to blows before Sgt. Slaughter and WWF officials separated them. Raw then went to commercials. After the break, Bam Bam Bigelow and Luna Vachon entered Sgt. Slaughter’s office. Bam Bam said that he felt unstoppable at the moment and there was no way he was going to lose the number one contendership match at Summerslam against Bret Hart. He told Slaughter that once he won that match, he wanted his shot at the WWF Title, the next night on Raw. Slaughter said this was a great idea and announced the winner of Bam Bam Bigelow vs Bret Hart would face the winner of Yokozuna vs Mr. Perfect next week on Raw for the WWF Title. Match 1 Bart Gunn, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Jimmy Snuka and Jim Powers vs Alaska, ‘Dr. Love’ Tom Pritchard and Well Dunn Not a poor match by any means despite the fact it was clearly a case of throwing together the superstars that had nothing better to do. Alaska was made to appear the star of the match with Jim Powers especially selling his big power moves and splashes. The finish came when Alaska hit the move that used to be called The Earthquake when he was Earthquake on Jim Powers and picked up the three count. Winners: Alaska, ‘Dr. Love’ Tom Pritchard and Well Dunn The cameras then cut to Vince McMahon and Jim Ross at ringside who talked about how huge the first time ever contest between Mr. Perfect and Yokozuna for the WWF Title at Summerslam would be. Neither man felt able to make a prediction on the outcome of the match which they said was on a knife edge. A short video was then shown on the Titantron about Mr. Perfect’s long journey to the top and about how it was his destiny to overcome it. Then the video focused on Yokozuna and his dominance of the main event scene since his debut. The package ended with the question ‘Will Destiny be able to overcome the largest obstacle in its path?’ Match 2 The Headshrinkers vs The Bushwackers Standard squash match. The Headshrinkers picked up the win after a top rope splash, but then went back and splashed both Bushwackers again. Afa then got on the mic and cut a very confusing promo about how The Headshrinkers would be victorious at Summerslam. Winners: The Headshrinkers Backstage, Johnny Polo was shown on his massive, brick like mobile phone. He was talking to a yuppie pal, saying that he was confident he would beat Marty Jannetty in the Free 4 All match before Summerslam despite never having wrestled before. Raw then went to commercials. Match 3 Adam Bomb w/ Harvey Whippleman vs Marty Jannetty This match was even poorer than it sounds. Mercifully it was over quickly when Johhny Polo came out and hit Marty over the head with his massive mobile phone behind the referees back. Crush came out to chase Polo away but it wasn’t enough to prevent Adam Bomb from picking up the victory. Winner: Adam Bomb After the match, Crush stood on the stage and stared a hole through Adam Bomb who was celebrating with Harvey Whippleman. The Samoan Savages were shown backstage all clashing heads in order to psyche themselves up for their big night ahead as Raw went to another commercial break. Back from the adverts, Todd Pettengil is with an irate Adam Bomb and Harvey Whippleman. They said that Crush had no business interfering in their match tonight and by the end of tonight he will pay for his actions. Match 4 Kamala vs Crush This match was shaping up to be quite a decent brawl with both wrestlers impressing with their power. However, the match was cut short due to a run in by Adam Bomb who demolished Crush. Kamala didn’t seem upset that Adam Bomb had cost him the match and instead joined in the vicious assault. Winner: Crush by DQ After match, Harvey Whippleman and Kamala pulled Crush up onto his knees and Adam Bomb delivered a huge chairshot which could be heard all around the arena, in a sign of things to come in their Nuclear Warfare match at Summerslam. Raw then went to another break. Match 5 Bam Bam Bigelow vs Billy Gunn Billy Gunn put up a decent fight but his lack of singles experience showed and Bam Bam collected a relatively easy win. After a top rope headbutt, Bam Bam went right up to the camera and said that he hoped Bret Hart was watching because at Summerslam he would suffer the same fate. Winner: Bam Bam Bigelow Backstage, Bret Hart was indeed shown watching the match and he seemed impressed. Todd Pettengil ran over to ask The Hitman if he was scared of Bam Bam. Hart said that he had won every title there is to win the WWF, whilst Bam Bam Bigelow hasn’t won a thing. He said he was the reigning King of the Ring, beating Bigelow in the final and he also beat Bam Bam 3 weeks ago on Raw. He said that Bam Bam was on an amazing roll and looked very impressive in the ring, but he was the Excellance of Execution and nothing would stop him becoming the number one contender for the WWF Title. He promised Bam Bam Bigelow and the fans that they would see a side of Bret Hart that they had no idea existed at Summerslam. Match 6 Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart vs ‘The Model’ Rick Martel A definite match of the night and a long gruelling contest, going around 15 minutes. Both men got a decent amount of offence in but ultimately it was Bret Hart who was successful in making The Model tap out to his Sharpshooter submission lock. Winner: Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart After the match, Bret Hart was barely able to stand as he had taken a lot of punishment on his injured ribs throughout the match. Bam Bam Bigelow came out and applauded Bret, saying he was one hell of a competitor, then he suddenly gave Bret a relatively weak jab in the ribs. However, the injury combined with fatigue meant that Bret collapsed in a heap on the floor as Bam Bam laughed and played to the crowd. Vince McMahon and Jim Ross were shown at ringside as they hyped ‘the hottest event of the Summer’ WWF Summerslam 1993. They gave a run down of all the matches featuring Raw Superstars, Johnny Polo vs Marty Jannetty – on the Free 4 All before Summerslam, Crush vs Adam Bomb – Nuclear Warfare Match, The Headshrinkers vs The Steiners vs The Quebecers – WWF Tag Team Title 3 Team Battle Royale, Bam Bam Bigelow vs Bret Hart – winner gets a WWF Title shot the next night on Raw, Lex Luger vs Ludvig Borga – National Pride Match and Yokozuna vs Mr. Perfect – WWF Title Match. Ludvig Borga was backstage with Todd Pettengil. He cut your standard ‘USA is NOT OK’ promo and whinged about how last week viewers saw the damage that America’s polluting had done to his home town of Borgaberg. He said he would make Lex Luger cry for his mummy at Summerslam. Match 7 Lex Luger vs Giant Gonzales This was never going to be a classic but it wasn’t too awful as it was kept short. Midway through the match, Ludvig Borga came down to ringside and was involved in several minor instances of interference, holding Lex’s leg when he ran off the ropes, putting Gonzales foot on the rope when in a pinning predicament, etc. However, it was not enough to prevent Luger picking up the win after his Running Forearm. Winner: Lex Luger After the match, Borga got in the ring and went to clothesline Luger. Lex ducked it and it appeared he would finally get his hands on Borga, but the Finn managed to put the breaks on and slid under the bottom rope and escaped to safety. Backstage, Mr. Perfect and Scott Steiner cut a very lukewarm promo about standing up for justice against the evil Samoan Savages and that they would do things the American way. They then introduced what they referred to as their very own U-boat, rising from the underneath the water to sink the enemy. The Ultimate Warlord then rose up from underneath the camera and yelled ‘Blitzkrieg! Blitzkrieg! Blitzkrieg!’ over and over again. Match 8 Yokozuna and The Faces Of Fear vs Mr. Perfect, Scott Steiner and The Ultimate Warlord Perfect and Steiner were on form in this match to carry the others through. Yokozuna remained on the apron for the bulk of the match, allowing the Faces of Fear to wear down Scott Steiner. When Yoko eventually tagged in, Steiner somehow made the hot tag to Mr. Perfect and the two men who will battle at Summerslam came face to face for the first time. However, it wasn’t to last long as Yokozuna ran away through the crowd causing Mr. Perfect to follow him. Then The Headshrinkers came down and took Scott Steiner out of the equation making it effectively a handicap match between The Faces Of Fear and The Ultimate Warlord. After a huge gorilla press slam on Haku, The Ultimate Warlord got the win and then pointed to a retreating Barbarian and yelled ‘You! Me! Summerslam!’ as Raw went off the air. Winners: Mr. Perfect, Scott Steiner and The Ultimate Warlord Quick Results Avalance, 'Dr. Love' Tom Pritchard and Well Dunn defeated Bart Gunn, Jim Powers, Jim Duggan and Jimmy Snuka The Headshrinkers defeated The Bushwackers Adam Bomb defeated Marty Jannetty Crush defeated Kamala by DQ Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Billy Gunn Bret Hart defeated Rick Martel Lex Luger defeated Giant Gonzales Mr. Perfect, Scott Steiner and The Ultimated Warlord defeated Yokozuna and The Faces of Fear
The Wrestling Newsletter - August 1993 Raw proved once more that it is everything Smackdown isn't. Though far from a perfect show, the action came thick and fast and this month alone, Bret Hart has been involved in three of the best televised matches of the year; versus Bam Bam Bigelow, teaming with Lex Luger against Bam Bam Bigelow and Ludvig Borga and versus Rick Martel this week. All the matches at Summerslam have been reasonably well hyped and despite the fact that Marty Jannetty vs Johnny Polo and Adam Bomb vs Crush will be awful, the fans seem quite interested, which is what is most important for the WWF. John Tenta, currently playing Avalanche, is said to be unhappy that he his masked. Tenta says it is difficult to perform at his usual level with the mask restricting his breathing and vision. He also made the point that few know who he is under the mask and they are wasting his name which could draw some fans. Granted its not 1990 anymore, but the former Earthquake would still be reasonably over with today's audience. The WWF have justified their decision by saying they felt the Earthquake gimmick and gone stale during The Natural Disasters face run and Tenta needed something new. There are even more signings to discuss this week, with the WWF seemingly after every established wrestler in North America: Jeff Gaylord: The 6'3, 280lber will have no problem adjusting to WWF life with experience in Puerto Rico and teaming with Jeff Jarrett in Memphis. Dan Spivey: Reports indicate that Spivey has been pitching ideas for gimmicks to the WWF for a long time and has been continuously knocked back until now. The gimmick the WWF approved is said to be that of a pacifist. It doesn't sound like a good idea, so it makes us wonder what Spivey's others were like. Tony Norris: This Mississippi native is one big, bad man. His in ring skills aren't excellant but his power and intensity certainly are. Also, with recent criticism of the WWF not featuring enough African American stars, he could be pushed to the moon upon debut. Chris Candido: Candido has been working well in SMW for a long time but only now has he been offered a developmental deal. Many doubt he has the size to succeed in the WWF. C.W. Anderson: The WWF are already trying to make Bam Bam Bigelow into thier own Vader, now it appears that they want this 23 year old to be their own Arn Anderson. Big, intense and quite skilled in the ring, with a naturally tough look, he could go far in the WWF. Bob Holly: Former NASCAR racer Bob Holly is now a three year veteran of wrestling and the WWF must see potential in him, but we can't Bruiser Mastino: Apparently, Mastino was hand picked by Vince McMahon for a special gimmick they have lined up. Details are sketchy at the moment, but Mastino is over 6 foot and over 300 pounds so expect him to receive at least a reasonable push in the WWF. Sean Morely: Morely is a young Canadian who many speculate has been signed to team with Lance Storm after independant standout Chris Jericho refused to sign. Morely is talented enough and has experience in Mexico and Puerto Rico. The Harris Brothers: The last thing the WWF needs is a pair of giant, untalented tiwn brawlers. However, that is exactly what they have here. Bill DeMott: DeMott is a strange signing for the WWF due to his history of hardcore brawls. His signing could be an indication of a new direction from the WWF. Sabu: As with Bill DeMott, Sabu has a history of bloody brawls. Sabu has a bizaare contract which will allow him to wrestle the independant scene and Japan but the moment the WWF call, he has to give it all up and work full time for them. Hercules: With the WWF in a transitional period, they need new blood and new gimmicks. Hercules wasn't successful 4 years ago, so he won't be now. Jim 'The Ultimate Warrior' Hellwig has hit out at the WWF for The Ultimate Warlord gimmick. In an interview, Hellwig claimed that this was a cheap shot by a sad man, referring to Vince McMahon and said he felt sorry for Terry Szopinski (The Warlord) who must be 'desperate for money'. The Warrior also appealed to WCW to sign him, saying that he is the missing ingredient they need and together they can dominate the US wrestling scene. Speaking of WCW, they have been neglected here in The Wrestling Newsletter for the past few weeks due to the load of sigings made by the WWF and the addition of a new WWF Television show and brand split. However, WCW is silently emerging as the best federation in America. Its lastest Clash of the Champions card was a sight to see, heres a rundown of the event: Ric Flair vs Terry Funk Not as good as their previous clashes but still a fantastic match to have, especially as the opener. Flair got the win here. Hollywood Blondes vs Catcus Jack and Maxx Payne All of these men looked in top condition and put on a great match which saw The Hollywood Blondes retain the WCW Tag Team Titles Paul Orndorff vs Arn Anderson A brutal, epic brawl saw both men give it their all but it was ultimately Orndorff who got the win and retained the WCW Television Title Vader vs Ricky Steamboat This ****+ match was inexplicably not the main event. It was a MOTY candidate and it saw Steamboat win by DQ, which means Vader retains Sid and Barry Windham vs Great Muta and Rick Rude A solid match came as somewhat of an anticlimax after the previous exceptional match, but it still entertained. The match featured a notable finish which saw Sting come down and clear house on everyone leading to a double DQ. Who knows what Sting is up to? It will be interesting to see if the WWF can top this with Summerslam on Sunday.
Thanks for the feedback. Sorry theres often such a gap between updates, I'm in the middle of a hectic exam period, but come the end of June I shall be updating this much more frequently
Friday Night Smackdown Preview Last week, General Manager Ted Dibiase announced that Shawn Michaels, Macho Man Randy Savage, Diesel, Bob Backlund, Jerry Lawler and The Undertaker would all be in action against mystery opponents. With the six men featuring in high profile matches at Summerslam just 2 days later, they will want to pick up some momentum without receiving too much punishment, but just who will their mystery opponents be? Razor Ramon and IRS looked impressive in their tag team debut, but the ghosts of his two defeats at the hands of The '1-2-3' Kid still haunt Razor Ramon, that's why tonight we will see Razor Ramon and IRS taking on The '1-2-3' Kid and the partner who he promised he would introduce last week. Rick Steiner has had some bad luck in recent weeks in his tag team encounters with The Quebecers. In the past two weeks he has lost twice to Pierre and Jacques but on each occasion, his partner, first The Red Rooster and then Virgil, has been pinned. Tonight Rick Steiner has challenged The Quebecers to face him on his own in a handicap match. Whoever wins this one will carry plenty of momentum into that 3 Team Elimination Battle Royale at Summerslam for the WWF Tag Team Titles. The Beverley Brothers have been on a terrible roll lately and Ted Dibiase has revealed he has considered firing them, but the smooth talking Genius has managed to work his Beverley Brothers back into the General Manager's good books with them set to feature in six man tag action with Jim Neidhart against Virgil and High Energy. The final WWF show before Summerslam is set to be huge and will also feature an appearance from Rowdy Roddy Piper himself! Confirmed Matches Shawn Michaels vs ??? Randy Savage vs ??? Diesel vs ??? Bob Backlund vs ??? Jerry Lawler vs ??? The Undertaker vs ??? Razor Ramon and IRS vs The '1-2-3' Kid and ??? Friday Night Smackdown Results The show began with Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan welcoming us to Smackdown, live from Amarillo TX, they mention that The Undertaker, Jerry Lawler, Diesel, Bob Backlund, Shawn Michaels and Randy Savage will all be in action against mystery opponents tonight. The arena then went dark and the now traditional minute long video was shown about The Undertaker before his eventual entrance. Taker made his way slowly to the ring and awaited his opponent who was revealed as….. Match 1 The Undertaker vs Doink The Clown One of the strangest combinations of WWF superstars imaginable made for an awkward contest. Midway through the match, Katie Vick, The Undertaker’s apparent girlfriend made her way to ringside to cheer on her man. Both Taker and Paul Bearer attempted to make her go to the back and wait but she refused. The finish was particularly novel, when Doink went under the ring and duplicated himself, then the 2 Doinks went under the ring again and became 4 and so on, in a scene reminiscent of the brooms in Fantasia. Soon there were 32 Doinks for The Undertaker to fight. During the fracas, 2 men dressed as Doink emerged from the back and took Katie Vick away. The Taker tried his best to save her but had to fight through all the Doinks. The Undertaker won the match when he unwittingly pinned one of the Doinks when he left his foot on him whilst he chokeslammed another. Winner: The Undertaker After the match, Taker charged backstage to look for the men who took Katie Vick as Monsoon and Heenan speculated that it was Jerry Lawler and Jeff Jarrett. Coming back from the adverts, The Undertaker was storming around looking for Vick. Ted Dibiase appeared and told him that he couldn’t allow The Dead Man to remain backstage when he was in such a violent state, so he told him to pack his stuff into the hearse and leave for the night. Paul Bearer tried to convince The Undertaker that it was just Jerry Lawler playing mind games and that Katie Vick was in on the trick too. The Undertaker refused to believe this. Match 2 Vigil and High Energy vs Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart and The Beverley Brothers A solid if unspectacular match and at least equal to their meeting a few weeks ago. The Beverley Brothers were playing their characteristically awful wrestler characters, botching moves left, right and centre. Jim Neidhart was looking increasingly frustrated with them throughout the match and The Genius yelled criticisms from ringside. The finish was rather tame with Owen Hart rolling up Beau Beverley and getting the pin. Winners: Virgil and High Energy After the match, The Genius entered the ring and berated The Beverley Brothers even more. He got on the microphone and appealed to Virgil and High Energy to join him so he can manage winners rather than losers. High Energy laughed him off and walked to the back but Virgil hesitated for a moment before he too laughed it off and walked to the back. Backstage, Razor Ramon was speaking to Smackdown General Manager Ted Dibiase. Razor questioned Ted’s judgement in making a match between Razor and IRS and The ‘1-2-3’ Kid and his new mystery partner, as Razor has a poor record against The Kid. Ted questioned Razor’s psyche, asking if he was intimidated by The Kid, Razor naturally denied these accusations. Ted said that he made the match because Razor needs a win over The Kid to re-establish his confidence, he also said that Tatanka was banned from the arena tonight so he wouldn’t be able to interfere like he did the last time Razor faced The Kid. Match 3 Diesel vs Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts The Snake received a huge reaction despite being in terrible shape when he was revealed as Diesel’s mystery opponent. Diesel made short work of the veteran, defeating him after a huge boot to the face. The crowd chanted ‘DDT’ throughout the match but they were still not rewarded by Jake Roberts. Winner: Diesel After the match, Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts walked to the back looking despondent after yet another defeat. At the announce table, Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan hyped WWF Summerslam this coming Sunday and ran down the Smackdown matches, featuring: WWF Intercontinental Title Match Shawn Michaels vs Randy Savage, Jerry Lawler vs The Undertaker, Tatanka vs Razor Ramon and IRS, The Beverley Brothers vs Mystery Opponents, Diesel vs Bob Backlund. They also announced that The Ultimate Warlord vs The Barbarian from the Raw side was now official. Match 4 Bob Backlund vs Jeff Jarrett Noone in the crowd cared much for either wrestler. The only entertaining factor was Jarrett’s mentor Jerry Lawler providing colour commentary and denying any involvement in the kidnapping of Katie Vick and also guaranteeing victory against The Undertaker at Summerslam in his hometown of Memphis, TN. Diesel interfered and big booted Backlund, allowing Jarrett to lock in the Figure Four Leglock for the win. Winner: Jeff Jarrett Backstage, Rob Bartlett was with The ‘1-2-3’ Kid who introduced his mystery partner….. The ‘A-B-C’ Boy! The Kid and The Boy announced they would be known as The Raw Youth and would revolutionise tag team wrestling as we know it. Match 5 Razor Ramon and Irwin R. Schyster vs The Raw Youth (123 Kid and ABC Boy) A very good match with The ‘A-B-C’ Boy doing his upmost to get over in his first match. At the very beginning Ted Dibiase led out his team of security cards to surround the ring to prevent Tatanka from interfering. However, it was to no avail, as Tatanka made his way through the crowd to a massive ovation. He hit the Indian Death Drop on Razor Ramon and allowed The ‘1-2-3’ Kid to get the cover and another shock win over Razor Winners: The Raw Youth After the match, the security guards seized Tatanka and they were about to destroy him. However, Dibiase stopped them at the last moment and said that now he was here, he may as well be of some service and took him to the back. Rick Steiner was in the back with Rob Bartlett. Steiner spoke about the legacy he and his brother Scott have as a tag team and said that although it seemed he couldn’t beat The Quebecers when teaming with Virgil and The Red Rooster, when Scott was by his side it would be different. He said that after The Steiners retain the titles as Summerslam, he wants to be drafted to Raw, or have Scott drafted to Smackdown so they can defend the titles regularly. Match 6 Rick Steiner vs The Quebecers Rick put up a spirited fight but ultimately the numbers proved too much and The Quebecers picked up the win following a double spinebuster. During the match, a lttile window opened in the top right corner, as it used to on WWF programmes in the 1980s. The window showed Raymond, the manager of The Quebecers leaving Ted Dibiase’s office rubbing his hands together, clearly happy about something. Winners: The Quebecers Shawn Michaels came to the ring and played to the crowd. He said he didn’t care who his mystery opponent was as he could beat anyone on the roster. He said that at Summerslam he would defeat the Macho Man and solidify his status as a main eventer and prove that the WWF Intercontinental Title is the top title in professional wrestling. He said he’d also heard the rumours that Randy Savage had a major surprise for him Summerslam, to which he said ‘bring it on’. Match 7 Shawn Michaels vs Tatanka When Tatanka was introduced as HBK’s mystery opponent, the man who claimed he could beat anyone on the roster appeared scared. The moment the bell rang, Michaels ran out of the ring, picked up his IC Title and headed out of the ring, causing a countout less than a minute into the match. Winner: Tatanka Tatanka remained in the ring, apparently annoyed at Shawn Michael’s actions when suddenly Razor Ramon and IRS hit the ring and destroyed Tatanka. Ted Dibiase came onto the stage and announced that he would be the special guest referee in the handicap match at Summerslam in order to ‘ensure fairness’. Backstage after the advert breaks, Jake Roberts was shown outside the GM’s office waiting to speak to Ted Dibiase. IRS opened the door and told him to go away and that the GM was far too busy to see him. Jake said he accepted that but wanted to ask why a huge wrestler like himself was not on the Summerslam card. IRS said that Jake Roberts was a washed up has been who Dibiase regretted signing to Smackdown. IRS said that if he won a match every now and then instead of preaching his religious values and boasting about overcoming his demons he might get a match on the pay per view. Men on a Mission turned up and IRS welcomed them into the office to see Ted Dibiase immediately, much to Jake’s chagrin. Match 8 Randy Savage vs Nailz w/ Repo Man Nailz was somewhat of a letdown as a mystery opponent but he still had an alright match with Savage. The finish was amusing when Nailz and Repo Man held The Macho Man up and invited Shawn Michaels to superkick him in the face, Savage ducked the kick and Michaels kicked Nailz in the face, allowing Savage to get the cover. Winner: Macho Man Randy Savage After the match, Savage got the microphone and announced his major surprise for Summerslam was the return of Miss Elizabeth as his manager. He said with ‘Liz’ by his side, there’s nothing he can’t do. Jerry Lawler came to the ring ahead of his main event match. He got the microphone and cut a standard heel promo against The Undertaker. He went on again about Summerslam coming from Memphis, TN where he was even more than a king. Suddenly he was interrupted by the sounds of bagpipes as his mystery opponent was revealed….. Match 9 Rowdy Roddy Piper vs Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler A true old school match was a great main event with the crowd extremely pleased to see Piper back in the ring. Unfortunately, the WWF wouldn’t allow a long match between the two and it ended with Piper getting the victory via DQ when Jarrett hit Piper over the head with his guitar. Winner: Roddy Piper by DQ After the match, Lawler and Jarrett assaulted Piper even more until suddenly the lights went out and the fans rose in anticipation of The Undertaker. When the lights came back on, The Dead Man was standing in the ring despite the fact he was escorted from the arena earlier. Lawler managed to run out of the ring but Jeff Jarrett was not so lucky and received a tombstone piledriver. The Undertaker did his trademark eye roll and made the throat slitting gesture in the direction of Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler as Smackdown went off the air.
