NetStream had barely even opened. It opened late Spring/Early Summer of 2015 but I was still in SWF at that point and there were whisperings of NetStream opening their own wrestling company but that's all they were, rumours. Fast forward a few months and here I am, out of SWF, unemployed, looking for work I guess. I wanted to go to Japan. However, here I was, in NetStream offices. "It's great to see you again Pete" Adam Simmons was a TV executive for C.A.N.N for a long time so over the last, few years we had a business relationship unti, oh I dunno maybe a year or two ago, when he stopped showing up to the SWF network meetings. We always had a good chat when I was in C.A.N.N but I never considered us friends. All I really knew was that he was a huge wrestling fan and constantly vouched for SWF on the network. I had heard he had been fired fo something but sued them for unfair dismisal, and ah, funnily enough this was the money that paid to set up NetStream. I never knew the settlement, but it was obviously substantial. "Nice to see you too" He smiled a little at me almost in sympathy. "Sorry to hear about SWF, real shame, you did great things" "Thank you, but Rich had to blame somebody, I was his scapegoat and I'm fine with that." "Well, as they say, when one door closes another one opens, right?" Maybe these rumours weren't rumours after all. "ELITE Pro Wrestling!" "You want to open a wrestling company?" "Sure, there's a opening in the market, realism." "Realism? That's a bit into TCW's territory, isn't it?" "No, not realism as in wrestling. Realism as in characters, storylines, fighting, not like MMA, but if two of these guys began fighting on the street, that's what i want to see, gritty realism...." It wasn't a bad idea. The big issue I was never really a person who was into that stuff. I was in the glitzy glamourous land of Supreme. "..... and your the booker?" "Look, I appreciate the offer, but my booking, it isn't exactly going to fit that style" "You were the guy who brought Remo to the top of the business, he is exactly the type of character that is going to work." He wasn't wrong, I did bring guys like Remo and Steve Frehley to the forefront of the business. I guess that's what he wanted. "Look I have a list of guys that I want to sign, maybe this could entice you" Clark Alexander Greg Black Harry Allen Remmy Skye Marc DuBois Texas Pete I was both happy and sad with this list. Clark Alexander, Greg Black and Harry Allen were excellent competitors and for me, I had never worked with two of them and misused another, it would be nice to be able to go and get a chance to work with them, then you had the second half of the list. We had three guys known for their self destructive behaviours. Remmy had recently been popped for weed, ending his sensational run with CZCW, Texas Pete is a drunk, who couldn't care less about the business and DuBois, well, I knew his story more than the other two. See Pete was fired because of Eric, I had nothing to do with it but Marc, he was a complete druggie, I had let him go. At this point, it was just whether I really wanted a job. "Is this all you want?" "Well, obviously you'll get to bring in a few others to round out the roster and I'll make a few additions here and there, but these are the guys I believe we can do something with." In truth, the idea itself is kinda brilliant. Bringing in three guys who have suffered with drink and drugs into a realistic, gritty product. It made sense. "And I have full booking control?" "Of course, the network will also pitch a few ideas, but it will be you who writes and produces the show." "But how is this going to work, with NetStream I mean?" "Simple, we put out each show on a weekly basis, we want the first show to be available in mid to late January, so we have a few months to hype ourselves up. It'll give us some momentum heading into the first show" This certainly wasn't what I was looking for when I was let go by SWF. However, I did want to stay in the business, I wanted to work. Sitting in a network meeting was nothing new to me but discussing talent with them was a little surreal. Sure in SWF you'd always get the "Jack Bruce will show up right?" questions but never who will you be pushing. I was always more about ratings and projections for them over the next few months. This was a lot different, the room was filled but only Adam spoke. "I have really decided yet, I want to bring in more guys first and then I'll evaluate what we have and see who I see as somebody who can be a bi part of the program" "That seems like a good idea. The network has a few things we would like you to do." "Okay, go ahead" "We want Marc DuBois to feature a lot, he's our biggest star and without him the top of our roster is very thin." I kinda saw that coming, with what Simmons had mentioned during the contract negotiations and all that, it wasn't any surprise he wanted him to be a key feature. "As we have discussed we hope the first show will be available come mid to late January which is still a few weeks away, we hope you will have a roster in place by then" "Yeah, I should have no problem with that" I had a few people on my list already, some realy good talents too. The main issue was always going to be if I could get people over enough to make the show a hit, but with the six guys Adam had insisted on signing, we had enough to make a splash. "We also have somebody ready to come in, I have dealt with him personally and should report to you soon enough" "Wait, you brought someone in?" "Yeah, I had heard he was looking for work, so I offered him one" "Well, who is it?" "Oh, you'll know him best as,,,," Huh, maybe this signing isn't as bad as it first seemed. I'm a pretty big guy and sure standing next to guys like Remo and Steve Frehley and Marat Khoklov made me look smal but that would make any man feel inferior. I was of a decent size, so against the Jack Bruce's and Angry Gilmore's of the world I didn't look out of place. I think that was furthered by the fact that Duane Fry and Jerry Eisen were in the booth with me. Then I met Dread. I had met big guys before, Marat Khoklov, Remo, Barry Bowen, all of them were big guys, hell Khoklov is a lot taller than Dread, but Dread was different. He was a specimen, something you'd create in a lab. Dread was teh greatest big man the wrestling world had ever seen and today was the day we would meet. "Well, Dread, it's great to meet you, I'm a huge fan" "Thank you" "Welcome to ELITE. I suppose my first question is what exactly do you want from this?" Dread kinda just mumbled a few words and to call them that would be of overstatement. It was obvious Dread didn't trust me, which makes sense. Between the two of us, we had many, many years in the business, yet we never crossed paths. Dread had a run in the SWF before I arrived and he's been a rival or in Japan when I was. We respected each other, for what we each had done in the business, but the trust, wasn't there yet. "I have my reasons" "Alright, we might discuss them down the road. So, Mr Simmons contacted you?" "Yeah, he did. I was looking for work somewhere, he was the first person to offer it to me." "Can I ask why you want to work?" "I have a dojo opened, it isn't much but I want to make some new talent for the business and it isn't cheap to run adn getting a bit of extra dough will help me keep it open." "Oh, okay. That's fine by me. So, what role were you offered? Some kind of bodyguard manager role?" "Not exactly" I had a lot of respect for Dread, there isn't any doubt about that but what could Dread offer us right now. he was retired, concentrating on training and the only thing he could offer us, was how over he was, putting him as a bodyguard for one of our younger stars made sense, even it was a pretty crappy role for a guy like Dread. "Mr Simmons told me he wanted me to be the enforcer in the locker room." "An enforcer?" "Yeah, he said that there might be some guys that might want to make trouble and he said he needs a guy to cut that out..." As much as the I liked the idea that Dread was going to keep the guys like Marc Dubois and Texas Pete in line, I hated the fact we were paying somebody to be security for the locker room. Don't get me wrong, we needed a guy like this, but paying somebody like Dread to do it, I could find two big guys down at the local club that could do the same job, maybe he just wanted somebody who they would respect, I don't know, I loved it and hated it. ".. Plus, if the time and opportunity are right, I might put the boots back on, if you wanted" Wait a minute, was I about to get the chance to book Dread.... "Hold up, you wanna wrestle again?" "Sure, given the right circumstances. I still think I can go enough to put on a decent if not good match" I had no doubt in my mind that Dread could still go and still put on a great match. he might have been retired and well past his prime but Dread was still a really, really good performer and putting him in the ring with somebody, would not only benefit ELITE, but also the guy who would be getting the rub. "Well, when you get the itch to get in the ring again for real, you let me know" "You got it" The only question now was would Dread ever get that itch. Going through wrestling plans with a network executive was weird enough but seems Mr Simmons was such a huge fan of wrestling, it was that much weirder. For one, he was a one of those fans who thought they could be an armchair booker, he'd constantly pitch ideas to myself and Rich Eisen back when he was in C.A.N.N. Now, he was my boss. That being said, he had given me full booking control so I was under no obligation to tell him anything.... So I didn't. Plus, this wasn't an official meeting, I was keeping my mouth shut. "Watch the show, you'll find out." "Really Pete? I'm your boss" "And I'm the booker, I want no leaks. Even Dread her don't know." That was kinda true, he didn't know much about the angles, but Dread was going to be an agent as well as backstage enforcer so he needed to know who was going over and all that kinda stuff, Dread was also a vet and he knew that I didn't want Mr Simmons knowing jack. It's easier to ask for forgiveness then permission "Yeah, and I don't want to know. My job is to look tough not be a booker" That was also kinda true, although Dread wasn't the booker I did take his opinions into account. I liked Dread's attitude, to it all. I'm invisible unless I need to be seen. "Okay, I guess I better get to the real reason I came over then, when will the first show be produced?" "Third week in January seems like the best option why?" "We want it out as soon as we can, we don't want to wait around and have another promotion take our spotlight. We've put a lot of money in the advertising this, we don't want something big to happen in SWF or USPW and have us be completely forgotten about" "I'm sure we'll be fine" As Mr Simmons scuttled away I thought a little more about what SWF and USPW could do to really put the cat amongst the pigeons. I mean the Black Wednesday betrayal happened over a year ago, that wasn't going to happen again. Or at least not exactly a year afterwards. "So, January?" "Yeah, I'd like more time, but hey, what can you do." "We'll be ready." He was right, we would be but that wasn't really a problem but I had a few. As Dread and I made our way to the exit, a man that I had seen before was right in front of me, walking towards me. He was one of those guys that clearly didn't want anything to do with wrestling as anytime we even exchange glances, all I'd get would be daggers, he didn't know me but didn't like me. When we were in meetings with the other execs this guys was there, even though he clearly didn't want to be, it wasn't a fact that he didn't like his job, it was obvious he hated wrestling. Before I regained myself from my thought of how I knew this guy as gonna be trouble, he walked into me. It seemed on purpose, but I can't say that for sure. "Watch where you're going, [expletive] idiot" He sped off as soon as he arrived, Dread turned to me. "What a d!ck" What can I say, the man wasn't wrong.
