WWF Smackdown, April 1997, Week One

Attendance: 15,776 at MO Kemper Arena

Commentary Team: Mike Tenay & Bobby Heenan

cDRGUvX.jpg

Welcome everyone to the first episode of WWF Smackdown! The Smackdown announce team of Mike Tenay & Bobby Heenan introduce themselves before running down tonight's card, including a huge main event match between Bret Hart & Mr. Perfect! After a bit of back-and-forth banter from Tenay & Heenan, Smackdown GM "Rowdy" Roddy Piper makes his way down to the ring to a huge pop! Piper welcomes everyone to the first episode of Smackdown before saying that he's gone above and beyond to make Smackdown the most must-watch show on television! Piper says that if the fans don't believe him, well, he's got something big to announce, a new championship! Piper says that since Vince McMahon and RAW drafted WWF World Champion Owen Hart, Smackdown is without a World Championship. Piper says that he doesn't need a World Champion, he needs a global champion! He then pulls out a bag and unveils...

The WWF Global Championship!

Piper says that the WWF Global Championship is Smackdown's answer to the WWF World Championship and soon it will far surpass it! Piper says that the tournament to crown the first ever WWF Global Champion will start tonight and end at Smackdown's first ever pay-per-view, WWF Fully Loaded, in May! Piper finishes by saying that Smackdown will kick RAW's ass!

The British Bulldog vs Reno Riggins

The British Bulldog hasn't been seen since losing to Shawn Michaels on RAW a little over a month ago. This match is nothing more than a squash match that Bulldog completely dominates. Bulldog finishes off Reno in just under five minutes after he hit him with the Running Powerslam.

WINNER: The British Bulldog

The Rock makes his way down to the ring with a microphone!

The Rock says that he's sorry to cut off The Britsh Bulldog's celebration for his first victory in almost a decade, but "The Brahma Bull" has business to take care of. The British Bulldog takes some offense to this and tells The Rock to watch his mouth, because he doesn't want to know what The British Bulldog is capable of. The Rock calls that statement "cute" and says that The British Bulldog always says that there's no bull in The British Bulldog, but he says that The British Bulldog is full of bull, bullcrap! This pisses Bulldog off and the two men begin to brawl! Both men beat the living hell out of each other until officials run in and separate the two. Both men jaw at each other as we go to commercials.

Edge & Christian vs Chris Walker & Joey Matthews

Edge & Christian were last seen at Wrestlemania 13, where they won the WWF Intercontinental Tag Team Championship from The Hardy Boyz in a triple threat tag team TLC match, which also involved The Dudley Boyz. This match is nothing more than a squash match that Edge & Christian completely dominate. Edge eventually finishes off Matthews in just under five minutes after he hits him with the Spear.

WINNERS: Edge & Christian

After the match is over, Edge & Christian start beating down on Chris Walker & Joey Matthews! Edge hits Matthews with another Spear before both of them grab chairs and hit Matthews with the Con-Chair-to! As officials tend to Matthews, Edge & Christian begin beating down on Walker. However, Walker manages to grab one of the chairs Edge & Christian dropped and begins defending himself with it! He hits both men with chair shots as Edge & Christian flee the ring! Walker stands tall with the chair as we go to commercials.

Pierre Ouellet vs Rick Steiner

This is Rick Steiner's first appearance since getting brutalized by Extreme Rising back at the Royal Rumble. This is also the first appearance of Pierre Ouellet in over a year, as he was last seen teaming with Rick Martel as The Model Canadians in 1996. Pierre seems to be looking radically different, sporting an eyepatch and looking way more muscular. This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind Steiner. Pierre & Steiner start off the match by going after each other with a series of clubbing blow. Steiner eventually gets the upper hand when he hits Pierre with a belly to belly suplex. Steiner throws Pierre into the corner and hits him with an enzuigiri. Steiner attempts a German suplex, but Pierre reverses it into a back suplex. The match comes to an end when Pierre picks up Steiner, runs off the ropes, and hits him with a big lariat! Pierre then picks up Steiner and hits him with his finisher, the Quebec Stampede (Package Piledriver)! Ouellet covers Steiner and gets the three.

WINNER: Pierre Ouellet

After that match is over, we cut to a hype video for Kane. It shows Kane's history in the WWF so far, from his debut in 1995 when he attacked his brother, The Undertaker, to facing The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 12, and all the way to winning the WWF World Tag Team Championships with Mankind. Now Kane is on Smackdown and will be in action tonight against Extreme Rising's Shane Douglas! Kane has had a bit of a beef with Extreme Rising in the past months, so maybe tonight he'll be able to put them down!

Kane vs Shane Douglas w/Paul Heyman

Kane & Douglas were last seen at Wrestlemania 13, where Douglas & his Extreme Rising partners defeated Kane, The Bodydonnas, and Scott Steiner. This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind Kane. Shane Douglas got the jump on Kane before the match, jumping him as he made his entrance! Douglas throws Kane into the corner and unleashes a barrage of punches on Kane. Referee Jim Korderas argues with Douglas over the amount of punches as Heyman hits Kane with a chair! Douglas goes for the cover, but Kane kicks out at two. Douglas goes to attempt the Pittsburgh Plunge, but he can't lift Kane up! This match comes to an end when Douglas keeps trying to lift Kane up, but Kane eventually overpowers him and hits him with a powerslam! Kane then picks up Douglas and hits him with the Chokeslam! Kane covers Douglas and gets the three!

WINNER: Kane

After that match is over, we cut to William Regal backstage. Regal says that now that he's on Smackdown, he will be the most dominant WWF Intercontinental Champion in all of WWF history. Regal says that nobody will be able to take the title off of him and he'll prove that next week, because he's issuing an open challenge next week on Smackdown for anyone to take him on in a WWF IC Title match! Regal finishes by saying that no one will be able to defeat the power of the punch!

Randy Savage vs Syxx

Savage was last seeen on RAW last night, where he was unveiled as Smackdown's final draft pick of the night. Meanwhile, Syxx was last seen at Wrestlemania 13, where he failed to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship from William Regal. This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind Savage. Savage & Syxx start the match off with a collar and elbow tie-up, in which Syxx hits Savage with a spin kick. Syxx throws Savage into the corner and hits him with a running knee smash. Syxx attempts the Syxx-Factor, but Savage reverses it into a powerbomb. Savage throws Syxx off the ropes and hits him with a big back body drop. Savage goes to the top rope and hits Syxx with a diving double axe handle. Savage attempts a back suplex, but Syxx lands on his feet and hits Savage with a spinning wheel kick. The match comes to an end when Syxx attempts the Syxx-Factor. However, Savage reverses it into a spinebuster! Savage then goes to the top rope and hits Syxx with his finisher, the Diving Elbow Drop! Savage covers Syxx and gets the three!

WINNER: Randy Savage

After a quick commercial break, we cut to black & white video, supposedly paid for by The Kliq. Bret Hart, Kevin Nash, & Scott Hall are in a room where they are talking about how Smackdown will never be the same once they get their hands on the WWF Global Championship. Bret says that if Piper thinks that this is his show, then he's a damn fool! Nash explains that starting tonight, Smackdown belongs to The Kliq. Hall finishes up by saying that they'll prove it tonight when Bret takes down that old has-been, Mr. Perfect in the WWF Global Championship Tournament!

WWF Global Championship Tournament Quarterfinals Match

Bret Hart vs Mr. Perfect

Bret Hart was last seen on RAW last night, where he was Smackdown's number one pick. Meanwhile, Mr. Perfect was also last seen on RAW last night, where he was Smackdown's final pick alongside Randy Savage. This match is a great match and the crowd is solidly behind Perfect. Perfect & Bret start the match off with a collar and elbow tie-up, in which Perfect slams Bret to the mat with a big suplex. Perfect throws Hart into the corner and hits him with a knife edge chop before hitting him with a fallaway slam. Perfect attempts the Perfect-Plex, but Bret reverses it into a suplex of his own. Bret repeatedly stomps Perfect's back before hitting his back with a second rope knee drop. Bret tries locking in the Sharpshooter, but Perfect kicks him away and blasts him with a lariat. Perfect goes to the top rope and hits Bret with a diving fist drop. Perfect lifts up Bret and hits him with a military press slam. The match comes to an end when Perfect attempts the Perfect-Plex, but his back gives out! This allows Bret to hit Perfect with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and lock him in the Sharpshooter! Perfect doesn't last long in the hold as he almost passes out immediately from the pain, giving Bret Hart the victory. Bret Hart & the rest of Kliq mates celebrate as the inaugural episode of Smackdown comes to a close.

WINNER: Bret Hart

The thing about Jushin Liger though is that he’s as technical as he is flashy. Psicosis went to put Kidman away with the Psycho Stunner but Kidman countered with a Death Valley Driver!</p><p> </p><p> <img alt="5XNfdpO.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/5XNfdpO.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="9GOaQe9.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/9GOaQe9.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> Kidman went up top but suddenly Super Crazy was on the ring apron, distracting the official! Juventud Guerrera appeared out of nowhere, pushing Kidman off of the turnbuckle and crashing to the mat! Psicosis capitalised, hitting the Psycho Stunner to steal the win, but the big question is why in the hell did Super Crazy & Juventud Guerrera help him? </p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> Psicosis</p><p> <strong>RATING: 64 / C</strong></p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <img alt="lYZHG9G.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/lYZHG9G.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="46799" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p><img alt="69oZLDE.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/69oZLDE.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><div style="text-align:center;"></div><p> Joey Styles promotes next weeks episode of Super Astros, which will see Jushin Liger defend the WWF Cruiserweight Championship against the winner of the upcoming fatal four way match. They didn’t disappoint, as a vibrant clash of styles made for an exciting main event while Jushin Liger watched on from backstage. Dean Malenko took control early on thanks to his excellent ring mastery, wrestling smart and making sure to stay out of the way of some of the more high octane action only to pick up the pieces immediately afterwards. And then Sabu lobbed a chair in his face. Sabu showed exactly why he’s the most dangerous man on Super Astros as he put 2 Cold Scorpio through a table at ringside with a springboard legdrop and then went after Whipwreck. A former Cruiserweight Champion in his own right, Whipwreck held his own, fighting off Sabu and almost catching him off guard with a small package. Sabu kicked out and laid into Whipwreck, setting him up for a flying legdrop. Malenko however slid into the ring and grabbed Sabu from the top rope and delivered a Death Valley Driver to Sabu straight onto the body of Mikey Whipwreck. As Sabu rolled out of the ring in pain Malenko delivered a thunderous Double Underhook Powerbomb to Whipwreck to get the win in Super Astros first ever main event, booking himself a shot at WWF Cruiserweight Champion Jushin Liger next week!</p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> Dean Malenko</p><p> <strong>RATING: 72 / B-</strong></p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <strong>SHOW GRADE: 65 / C</strong></p></div><p></p>

BTW, your version of Super Astros is amazing. While is different of the show i knew via youtube, it's an interesting way to show the cruiserweights. Keep up the good work!</p>

Brian Pillman vs Eddie Guerrero

Comments: Guessing there’s some interference from Harlem Heat, possibly leading to a post match brawl

Owen Hart & ??? vs Vader & Shawn Michaels

Who is ???: I’ll go with Undertaker too.....Whoever it is, Owen should be getting the win after losing last week. You don’t want your champ losing too often.....probably a DQ/Schmozz kinda win.....that or at a push a no contest

I missed the Smackdown picks but I like the concept of using the Super Asto’s Show for the Cruiserweights
