Attendance: 14,078 at AZ America West Arena

Commentary Team: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler

QtFg7iC.jpg

We welcome you live to Phoenix, Arizona, home to tonight's episode of Monday Night RAW! Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler run down the card for tonight before being interrupted by Owen Hart. Owen says that last week was supposed to be a huge night for him. He had just won the WWF World Heavyweight Championship and had just been picked as the number one overall pick in the WWF Draft. Owen says that was until a big ugly monster known as Vader made his presence known. Owen says that he knows what Vader wants, he wants the WWF World Heavyweight Championship! Owen says that if Vader really wants it, he'll have to pry it from his cold, dead hands! Before Owen can continue...

Jim Cornette appears on the video screen!

Cornette says that Owen is exactly right in one aspect, Vader wants the WWF World Heavyweight Championship! Cornette says that once Vader gets his hands on Owen, that WWF World Title will be around his waist in no time! Cornette says that he's been talking to Vince McMahon and if Vader pins Owen in tonight's tag team main event, then he'll get a WWF World Title match at WWF Backlash next Sunday! Owen finishes by saying that if it's a fight Vader wants, it's a fight that Vader will get!

Etsuko Mita vs Luna Vachon

Etsuko Mita was last seen on RAW a few weeks ago when she & Manami Toyota defeats Ivory & Madusa. This match is nothing more than a squash match that Mita completely dominates. Mita eventually finishes off Vachon in just under five minutes after she hits her with the Death Valley Driver.

WINNER: Etsuko Mita

After that match is over, we cut to Harlem Heat in Vince McMahon's office. Booker T asks Vince if he saw what he & Stevie did to Steve Austin & Brian Pillman last week. Vince says he did and that he liked what he saw. Vince says he likes when his superstars take the initiative and grab their opportunities by the throat! Stevie Ray says that if Vince liked it so much, why doesn't he give them a WWF World Tag Team Championship match at Backlash? Vince says that he likes Stevie's attitude and gives them a title match at Backlash! Stevie Ray & Booker T thank Vince as Vince finishes off by telling Harlem Heat not to let him down.

Rey Mysterio vs George South

Rey Mysterio was last seen on RAW last week when he successfully defended the WWF European Championship against Bam Bam Bigelow. This match is nothing more than a squash match that Mysterio completely dominates. Mysterio eventually finishes off South in just under five minutes after hitting him with the 619 into the West Coast Pop.

WINNER: Rey Mysterio

After the match is over, Rey Mysterio celebrates his victory until...

Kensuke Sasaki runs down to the ring and attacks him!

Sasaki beats the living daylights out of Mysterio, hitting him with multiple German suplexes and backbreakers before finishing Mysterio off with a spinning sitout powerbomb! Sasaki then picks up the WWF European Championship and raises it high in the air as we go to commercials.

Diamond Dallas Page vs Farooq

Diamond Dallas Page was last seen on RAW back in February when he lost to Bret Hart in a WWF World Championship match. Meanwhile, Farooq was last seen on Sunday Night Heat last week, where he promised a bigger and better Nation of Domination. This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind DDP. DDP & Farooq start the match off with a collar and elbow tie-up, in which DDP hits Farooq with an arm drag. DDP throws Farooq into the corner and hits him with a knife edge chop. DDP attempts the Diamond Cutter, but Farooq reverses it into a back suplex. Farooq attempts the Dominator, but DDP wiggles out of it and reverses it into the Diamond Cutter! The match comes to an end when DDP tries to cover Farooq, but before he can...

"WE ARE THE NATION OF DOMINATION!"

Is that Mark Henry making his way down to the ring in Nation of Domination colors?!?!? What is the former Olympian doing in Nation of Domination colors?!?!? There's not much time to question as Henry gets on the apron and headbutts DDP for the DQ! Henry then gets in the ring, picks up DDP, and hits him with a big slam! Henry gets Farooq up and the two men raise their fists over DDP's body.

WINNER: Diamond Dallas Page (By DQ)

After the match is over, Farooq grabs a microphone and begins to talk about what just happened. Farooq says that he said that he would make The Nation of Domination bigger and better and he definitely succeeded with that when he recruited Mark Henry to the Nation of Domination! Farooq hypes up Mark Henry, calling him the world's strongest man and saying that Henry will be the boost The Nation of Domination desperately needs. Farooq & Henry finish by raising their fists in the air as we go to commercials.

Scott Steiner vs Jim Neidhart

Steiner was last seen at Wrestlemania 13, where he was unsuccessful in his quest to take down Extreme Rising. Meanwhile, this is Jim Neidhart's first appearance in almost two years! This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind Steiner. Neidhart starts the match off by blasting Steiner with a big lariat. Neidhart throws Steiner into the corner and unloads a barrage of punches onto him. Neidhart attempts a backbreaker, but Steiner reverses it into a belly to belly suplex. Steiner throws Neidhart off the ropes and hits him with a back body drop. Steiner attempts a brainbuster, but Neidhart knees Steiner in the head and reverses it into a suplex. The match comes to an end when Neidhart attempts the Anvil Flattener, but Steiner reverses it into a belly to belly suplex! Steiner then locks Neidhart in the Steiner Recliner! Neidhart eventually has no choice but to tap out!

WINNER: Scott Steiner

After that match is over, we cut to Shawn Michaels, Triple H, & The New Age Outlaws in the tattered remnants of The Kliq's locker room. Triple H says that it's been a week since they've been separated from The Kliq and it still doesn't feel right. Road Dogg & Billy Gunn say that they miss Bret, Scott, & Kevin and their antics. Shawn tells the three men to quit their moping, because he has a great idea. Shawn says part one of the idea kicks off tonight when he & Vader take on Owen Hart & whatever scrub he picks. Triple H asks about part two of the idea and Shawn whispers something in his ear. A wide grin envelops Triple H's face and the four men go back to strategizing and we go to commercials.

Brian Pillman vs Eddie Guerrero

Brian Pillman was last seen on RAW last week when he & Steve Austin were attacked by Harlem Heat. Meanwhile, Eddie Guerrero was also last seen on RAW last week when he lost to Chris Jericho after smacking him with the Money In The Bank briefcase. This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind Pillman. Eddie starts the match off by smacking Pillman across the face! This pisses off Pillman, who in turn blasts Eddie with a high knee. Pillman throws Eddie into the corner and hits him with a knife edge chop before hitting him with a double underhook suplex. Pillman goes to the top rope and attempts a diving crossbody, but Eddie rolls out of the way. Eddie knees Pillman in the ribs before hitting him with a German suplex. Eddie picks Pillman back up and hits him with not one, not two, but three consecutive suplexes! Eddie goes to the top rope and attempts the Frog Splash, but Pillman gets his knees up just in time. The match comes to an end when Pillman picks up Eddie and hits him with the Stun Gun, but he inadvertantly knocked out referee Mike Chioda in the process! Pillman covers Eddie as the crowd counts the three, but Chioda is still knocked out! Before Pillman can do anything else...

After that match is over, we cut to Owen Hart in his locker room. Owen says to himself that he still hasn't found a tag team partner and the main event is up next! Jericho says that he heard that Owen hasn't found much success in finding a tag team partner, so why not turn to the "Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla!" Owen says that he's glad to have Jericho's help and he knows that he'll be a great parner. Jericho says that he cannot wait to get his hands on that "boy toy" Shawn Michaels and that big ugly oaf known as Vader! The two men shake hands as we go to commercials.

Owen Hart & Chris Jericho vs Vader & Shawn Michaels

Jericho was last seen on RAW last week when he beat Eddie Guerrero by DQ. Meanwhile, Shawn Michaels has apparently been developing a plan for him, Triple H, & The New Age Outlaws. Finally, if Vader pins Owen Hart tonight, he'll get a WWF World Title match at Backlash. This match is a good match and the crowd is solidly behind Owen & Jericho. Jericho & Vader start the match off with Jericho trying to knock Vader down with an dropkick. It fails and Vader hits Jericho with a big chokebomb. Vader tags out to Shawn, who throws Jericho into the corner and hits him with an enzuigiri. Shawn then stomps the living daylights out of Jericho. Shawn attempts a teardrop suplex, but Jericho reverses it into a German suplex. Shawn rolls out of the ring, but Jericho runs off the ropes and hits him with a suicide dive! Jericho tags out to Owen, who throws Shawn into the ring. Owen attempts a gutwrench suplex, but Shawn rakes his eyes! This allows Shawn to tag out to Vader. The match comes to an end when Jericho goes after Shawn and the two men begin brawling all around the ringside area! The two men eventually brawl to the back as Vader cracks Owen with a spinning backfist! Vader then hits Owen with the Vader Bomb! Vader covers Owen and gets the three, earning a WWF World Heavyweight Championship match at Backlash in the process!

WINNER: Vader & Shawn Michaels

After a quick commercial break, it's time for our final segment of the night, the official debut of Sting! Metallica's "Seek and Destroy" plays as lights begin flashing all across the arena. Eventually Sting makes his way down to the ring to a huge pop from the Phoenix crowd! Sting slowly makes his way down to the ring occasionally twirling his baseball bat. Sting eventually gets in the ring and grabs a microphone. WWF Super Astros, April 1997, Week Two

Filmed in front of 11,571 at NM Tingley Coliseum

Mikey Whipwreck vs. Sabu vs. 2 Cold Scorpio

All three of these men clashed last week in a fatal four way match to determine Jushin Thunder Liger’s challenger tonight, unfortunately for all three it was Dean Malenko that came out on top. Knowing that a win here tonight could see them placed as the next challenger for either Liger or Malenko there was a lot to fight for, and fight they did in a fast paced triple threat match. Whipwreck and Scorpio worked together for a time to try and ground the dangerous, risk-taking Sabu, but their alliance didn’t last long enough for either men to win as they soon came to blows in an effort to take the match. Sabu capitalised on the no disqualification rules of a triple threat bout by lobbing a chair clean into the face of Whipwreck before planting Scorpio with a springboard DDT onto the very same chair to get the pin.

WINNER: Sabu

RATING: 65 / C

As announced last week Super Astros would be getting it’s very own General Manager to lead the Cruiserweight division, and it was time for that man to make his presence known. An unfamiliar face emerged from backstage and headed down to the ring. He intrdouced himself as Don Callis, the man with a plan to turn the WWF Cruiserweight division into the premiere athletic brand in all of professional wrestling. It was Callis who decided to book the WWF Cruiserweight Championship for tonight’s main event and that’s just the beginning.

Don Callis: “Every week I’m going to bring you the most exciting, unpredictable wrestling anywhere on the planet, and if RAW or SmackDown think they can just roll along and forget about this division, about MY division, they’ve got another thing coming!

Super Crazy & Juventud vs. Local Talent

Last week Super Crazy & Juventud aligned themselves with Psicosis and though their reasons were unclear, their actions in this match were more than clear as they put down two local talents in three minutes flat.

WINNER: Super Crazy & Juventud Guerrera

RATING: 45 / D

KKFxLN1.jpg

Post-match Psicosis grabbed a microphone and began ranting in Spanish, before switching to English so that “all you people can understand”.

Psicosis: “We’re sick of being overlooked because of where we’re from, because of how we speak, because of our skin tone! You people think you’re better than us because you stole a bunch of land? Well the Latino World Order are here to steal it back! First this show, then this company, it’s all gonna belong to us!”

RATING: 56 / C-

Switching backstage to the office of new Super Astros general manager Don Callis, the new man in charge quickly meets one of his more out there roster members as Sabu storms into the office, demanding he gets what he deserves, a shot at the WWF Cruiserweight Championship. Callis says that he appreciates what Sabu brings to the table and that he wants everyone to show him why they deserve a place on his show so his advice to Sabu? Go out there and show me why you deserve a title shot. Sabu, with a twisted grin, walked off without a word, which can’t be good.

RATING: 47 / D

The Hurricane vs. Jerry Lynn

Last week Jerry Lynn declared himself the franchise player of the Cruiserweight division, and this was a chance to prove it against Super Astros’ resident oddball superhero The Hurricane. A quick back and forth opening saw The Hurricane catch a cocky Jerry Lynn off guard, reminding him not to take him lightly. Lynn didn’t need to be told twice as he went to work on Hurricane, grounding him down and twisting him in knots with his technical wrestling skills. The Hurricane fought back and connected with a big leaping clothesline from the top rope but couldn’t capitalise, and soon found himself falling victim to the Cradle Piledriver.

WINNER: Jerry Lynn

RATING: 61 / C

Jerry Lynn wasn’t content with the victory, snatching a microphone from ringside and again declaring that he is the franchise player of the Cruiserweight division. To Lynn it doesn’t matter who is running the show, the only thing Don Callis has to do is recognise his talent, treat his star attraction right, and everything else will just fall into place.

RATING: 45 / D

WWF CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

Jushin Thunder Liger © vs. Dean Malenko

The first ever WWF Cruiserweight Championship match to take place on Super Astros, and it’s only the second episode! Last week Dean Malenko defeated three of the divisions best to earn this match against the man who beat him at WrestleMania, and he was determined to leave tonight with the Cruiserweight Championship around his waist. No easy feat by any means when you’re facing off against one of the best athletes in the business. Malenko aimed to keep Liger grounded and work over the leg and lower back, one to set him up for the Cloverleaf but also to ground him down and restrict any of the flashy offence that Liger pulls off so well. Liger’s no slouch technically either but just couldn’t outwrestle Malenko so instead broke out some stiff looking strikes, catching Malenko off guard who wasn’t expecting such rough offence from Liger. Liger literally struck Malenko into a corner and busted out a violent exploder suplex from the corner and a hurricane DDT from the top turnbuckle. Moments later he busted out the Liger Bomb to put Malenko down for the count and retain his title in a fantastic main event.

WINNER: Jushin Thunder Liger

RATING: 73 / B-

The bell had rung and Jushin Thunder Liger had been handed back his WWF Cruiserweight Championship when suddenly...

MwI9b70.jpg

Sabu appeared on the apron and flung a chair right into Liger’s face! Sabu went right after Liger, violently beating him down and attempting to rip Liger’s mask right off his face! Dean Malenko comes to Liger’s rescue though, grabbing the chair Sabu used and running him off with it. Earlier tonight Don Callis told Sabu to show him why he deserved a shot at the WWF Cruiserweight Championship and he’s done exactly that, at the expense of the current champion Jushin Thunder Liger!

RATING: 59 / C

Wrestling Observer Newsletter, April 1997, Week Two

By: Dave Meltzer

j3jafaC.jpg

It came out this week that Rob Van Dam has been busted for smoking marijuana. You may have seen on WWF Smackdown this week that Cactus Jack saved Randy Savage from a Kliq beatdown, but it was apparently originally supposed to be RVD making the save instead of Foley. That was until Monday afternoon, when Vince McMahon & Jim Ross received the results of the latest round of drug tests. RVD tested positive for weed and was fined an undisclosed amount. He didn't get suspended, but he may pay the price creatively, as his main event push may be coming to an end soon. Don't expect him to job out to everyone, but also don't expect him to defeat any of the top guys any time soon.

daCBkQi.jpgGAZAliS.jpg

Keiji Mutoh may be out the door in WCW. He signed with the company in December 1994 for two years. Since December 1996, he's been working on a per-appearance basis. Now since he's not doing much (He's only wrestled four times since December 1996), he wants to do more and is looking at either NJPW or the WWF to jump to. Mutoh in NJPW would be amazing as we already know and I have no idea how Vince would book Mutoh.

p9iyRFF.jpg

The WWF is apparently looking to revamp the women's divison. The division has been a bit stagnant over the past few months, with Madusa fending off most of her challengers. The WWF have looked into bringing in more Japanese talents, including the Inoue Sisters among others. There have also been rumblings of an all-women TV show on the WWF Network, but those talks haven't really amounted to anything yet.

lrrnXUA.jpg

Speaking of Japanese women's wrestling, All Japan Women's Wrestling is in bad financial shape and may be gone sooner rather than later. Things have been going wrong for AJW for a while now, with the WWF poaching their top talent for their women's division and just a lull in the Japanese wrestling industry. Without AJW in the fold, the Joshi scene in Japan may have a gaping hole in it sooner rather than later.

The Monday Night War continues to be won by the WWF. WWF Monday Night RAW drew around 43.5 million viewers worldwide this week, with their main event of Owen Hart & Chris Jericho vs Shawn Michaels & Vader and the TV debut of Sting. Meanwhile, WCW Monday Nitro drew around 29.0 million viewers worldwide this week, with their main event of The Guardian Angel defeating The Warrior to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

Gtfct6Y.jpgMHZllC8.jpg

The war in Mexico continues to be won by CMLL. CMLL got a 12.8 for Sin Limite de Tiempo this week, which featured Konnan defeating El Dandy in an excellent match. Meanwhile, AAA got a 4.1 for AAA TV, this week, which featured Rey Misterio Sr. going to a no contest with Pirata Morgan in a decent match.

That's all for this week's edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Make sure to come back soon for more wrestling news from around the world.
