DAVE: Rocky Road(Cverse 97 Mod)

Recommended Posts

“Is the camera on?”

I motioned to the camera crew to place the light more to highlight the backdrops. Obviously the mood was gonna be a little darker, it was a wrestling documentary, nothing positive here. This in contrast with the guy sitting in front of me; his PSW shirt white and bright for this segment and the guy flashed the pearly whites as our crew gave the thumbs up. He looked back to us and positioned his head a little more towards the camera. If I was inside his head, I could guess he was about to start a story that would captivate us for the rest of the night.

White Riot hits signaling the entrance of JD Morgan and his manager, Phil Vibert. Vibert struts to the ring with a smile on his face as Morgan gives off the usual stoic look towards every member of the DAVE crowd. The duo are pelted with boos and jeers as they make their way down the entrance ramp and into the ring. Vibert snatches a microphone from ringside and gives a smug look out to the crowd before getting inside and taking position next to this client.

Phil Vibert:"Happy New Year, DAVE! Look at each and everyone of you....overweight, useless, bottom-feeding urchin. Much like our DAVE Extreme champion, Johnny Martin, you people could't lace the boots of JD Morgan and nor could you wear them."

The crowd let Vibert hear the chorus of boos and start up a small, but audible Johnny Martin chant which causes Vibert to smile a bit bigger.

Phil Vibert:"Exactly, you mindless drones keep cheering him on because after tonight.....I end Johnny Martin's reign as Extreme champion. You see Johnny, I have 2 choices for you tonight. The first is you give up that Extreme Championship and let Morgan wear that belt again."

Phil pauses to take in the very audible boos and obscene chants making themselves audible at the expense of Vibert and Morgan which stifles a laugh from Vibert.

Phil Vibert:"No, No, No. You don't want option two for Johnny because option two is we take that belt by force at Back in Black. Simple as that. I'll see you tonight, Johnny boy."

With that, Vibert and Morgan exit the ring pelted with various chants and a loud chorus of boos rocking the venue.

Hardcore Rules

William Fletcher vs. J.J. Coles

A easy brawling hardcore match between the two as Coles finds himself on the wrong end of a exchange of steel chairs, but endures the chair beating to hit a Burning Rubber that knocks William out cold and gives Coles the first win of the DAVE New Year. Coles picks a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket and grabs a lighter from a fan at ringside, lighting his cigarette as Rock n' Roll plays.

Miss Bliss is dressed in a skimpy skirt and tight tee as she attempts to ease the visible stress in Freddie Datsun with slowly massing his shoulders. Datsun isn't eased however as he simply stays seated without any acknowledgment of what Bliss is doing. Stephens is busy looking through a collection of plaid shirts and can't seem to decide which one is bestDatsun only has his eyes fixated on the small picture of Eric Tyler hanging on the wall opposite to him.

Michael Cook and Roy Stephens vs. Vin Tanner and Eric Tyler

Cook and Stephens are a strange pairing to face Tanner and Tyler here tonight, but the two give a fight for the crowd in question. Tyler and Tanner outmatch the pair on the mat, but Cook is able to successfully take Tanner to the mat a few times with excellent amateur takedowns. However the DAVE crowd starts a Stephens chant and Cook tags him in, immediately allowing Tanner to recover as Stephens plays to the crowd and is taken down with a hard lariat to the back of his head and Tyler tags in, locking Stephens in a Boston Crab for the win.

Grade: D+

O7fwwWL.jpgXPrfxfk.jpg

As Michael Cook rolls Roy out of the ring, Vin Tanner hands Eric Tyler a microphone and “The Traditionalist” speaks as the DAVE crowd cheers seeing Roy Stephens leave the ring.

Eric Tyler:“You trash heaps wanna give it a rest? I didn't come out here to take a chair to anyone's head or make my name killing my opponent. No, I beat them with a clean submission and none of that hardcore trash you people love.”

The crowd jeers Tyler for this, chanting for someone to bust his head in.

Eric Tyler:“Sorry, but if Freddie didn't come out here to protect the kid, he won't come out to confront me. I own Freddie Datsun and I own you people. This is my DAVE and it won't involve anything but my two hands.”

Hardcore Rules

The Wolverine vs. Monty Walker

Another Hardcore match tonight that showcases two opposing styles in DAVE. Walker takes an early advantage with some breath taking aerial moves, including a springboard moonsault that earns an audible “ooooh” from the crowd in attendance. The turning point of this match happens when Monty tries for a jumping forearm, but instead gets a chair thrown into his face. Monty is out cold but The Wolverine isn't done instead hitting Walker with The Maul and taking the pin over his unresponsive opponent.

Johnny Martin, DAVE Extreme title around his waist, walks down the hallway as he gets closer and closer to the entrance way of the ring. This draws more and more chants from the DAVE crowd as Martin gets closer to pushing through the curtains as the main event draws near. The start of Lithium plays and the crowd erupts.

The Darkness Warriors vs. Johnny Martin and Freddie Datsun

Martin does most of the heavylifting in this match as Datsun sticks to standing on the apron, seemingly in a daze. The Darkness Warriors are keen to Datsun's struggles and take advantage of Martin with double team moves. This rallies the crowd to jeer Datsun who is still unfazed, standing on the apron as Miss Bliss tires to urge him into action from ringside, but instead of Datsun overcoming his personal funk, Martin escapes a camel clutch and dodges a lariat from Raul Darkness that inadvertently knocks out Jay Darkness. Raul holds his hands to his robes and gets turned around by Martin and hit with a Twist on The Rocks for the pin.

yKUBbZZ.jpgGaEZpsT.jpgwRmLVk2.jpg

After the match, Phil Vibert rolls into the ring with a sneering JD Morgan following outside of the ring, stalking each and every corner of the ring as Martin holds the Extreme title. Vibert puts a hand out and motions for Martin to hand it over, but instead of getting a belt, Vibert gets floored with a punch prompting JD Morgan to run into the ring and get laid out with a shot from the belt. The show ends with Martin being cheered by the audience as he holds the title high.

So what was Back in Black's card?

"So that was the first ever DAVE show of 1997?"

yKUBbZZ.jpg

Martin nods as he smiles a bit to the camera giving us a clear indication of his recognition of the nostalgia trip this first memory had taken him on. He looks back to me directly, almost peering into my soul as he gives another answer.

"Our first show of 97 and the first show since Phil was officially the owner of DAVE. It was a indication of where we ere gonna take DAVE and the Eat Coast wrestling scene for our time. Even as we packed Pennsylvania Park full, we were turning away 700 to 800 people a night and Phil started to look towards more generic venues. The vibe was special and I think all of us in the back knew it because this story of Me, Morgan and Phil got a little more complicated legally as Back in Black hit."

He takes a piece of promotional paper and shows it to me. Its an advertisement of DAVE Back in Black and the officially announced matches for the show. It read the following:

DAVE Back In Black looks to rock Pennsylvania park on Monday as we take the New Year and turn it on its head. Rock out with us and the matches provided

DAVE Back In Black

Monday, January 1997

Pennsylvania Park

ZSmqgB7.jpgO7fwwWL.jpgXPrfxfk.jpg

We open up the show in the ring with Vin Tanner, Eric Tyler and a mystery woman. She is dressed in a blue suit and holds a microphone as Tyler urges her to speak. The crowd doesn't give her the time as they chant for her to remove her suit and draws Vin to flash some nasty snarls at select members of the crowd. She gathers herself and begins to speak.

Emma Chase: “My name is Emma Chase and I am Freddie Datsun's---”

Her microphone is drowned out by the sound of Datsun's music swallowing the venue in its upbeat theme. Flanked by Miss Bliss on one side and Roy Stephens on the other, Freddie Datsun has a chair in hand and runs down to the ring as the mysterious female immediately leaves the ring and a DAVE ref runs out and this match is underway.

Freddie Datsun and Roy Stephens w/Miss Bliss vs. Vin Tanner and Eric Tyler

Datsun takes the chair he ran in with and decks Vin Tanner with it as Roy Stephens jumps on Tyler's back, attempting to choke him out but only getting slammed into the steel ringpost as a result. The match bell rings and we start the match. The blue suit woman makes a impact as she hits Datsun with her heel allowing Eric Tyler to Irish whip him right into the steel guardrail. This draws the ire of Miss Bliss as she pounces on the woman known as Emma Chase, ramming her head on the floor and having to be taken off by an irate Tyler. Stephens is still out of it, but a recovered Tanner rolls him into the ring as Tyler follows through and Tanner goes to land some shots to a downed Datsun. Stephens tries to mount a fight and goes for a roll up, but Tyler simply stomps him in the chest. Tyler puts Stephens in a Boston Crab and the youngster submits, yelling in pain as Tyler ignores the referees warnings.

Black Murder© vs. J.J. Coles and Henry Lee

Coles grabs one of his cigarettes and goes to light it, but its smacked out of his mouth by Elijah Black which draws a sharp right from Coles and Murderous Mikey is cut off from attacking by Henry Lee who lays him out with a stiff shot with a stop sign. Coles goes to light another one, but Elijah Black swiftly gets up and lands a kick to the gut sending the cigarette onto the mat. Mikey has a wide cut on his forehead, but that doesn't stop him from attacking Lee in a rage, drawing the extreme warrior into a battle of weapons on the outside of the ring. Lee answers with a stop sign and Mikey engages him with a baseball bat. Coles tries for a Burning Rubber, but is caught off by a stiff left with brass knuckles by Black. Coles is out cold and Elijah goes for the pinfall and the win as Mikey wins his duel of weapons on the outside. Black Murder Retain.

Big Cat Brandon starts the match out with Michael Cook, using his raw power and size advantage to dominate the mat based wrestler. Caulfield cheers on the apron, trying to start a chant for Big Cat, but only draws jeers from the crowd who aren't happy to see Chris in this match. Big Cat launches Michael Cook towards his corner of the ring where a eager Monty Walker tags in and Caulfield pleads for Brandon to tag out. The big man bows to this demand and Caulfield rushes into the ring, intermediately floored with a dropkick from Monty. Monty heads up top and lands a Moonsault onto Caulfield, leading his team to victory and making Big Cat leave Caulfield to lay on the mat.

He pauses as he pushes up the tie on his suit and readjusts his head position with a slight roll.

DAVE Extreme Title Match

Hardcore Rules

JD Morgan vs. Johnny Martin©

Morgan and Martin start the match off in a very non DAVE way, locking up in the center of the ring as Vibert paces along the ringside area. Morgan gains the upper hand and goes on the offensive with well placed strikes to the gut. Martin takes the offense in strides as he looks to power out of a headlock from Morgan but is instead Irish whipped into the corner where Morgan follows up with a running forearm and locks in a Cross Atlantic Stretch on Martin. Vibert wants the referee to watch Martin's hands and face for any sign of giving up, but Martin instead powers out and tosses Morgan outside of the ring. The DAVE crowd goes wild for Martin as he exits the ring and grabs a Kendo stick from underneath the ring and wails on Morgan with it, drawing loud, painful yells from Morgan. Martin punks out Vibert by looking at him and turns his back. Vibert takes advantage of this and nails Martin with a metal pipe to the back of his head, knocking Martin out. He tries to get Morgan up, but an all too familiar song plays over the venue.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/idn50Xj_CiY" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The lights go out and there is a loud chant for Vengeance in the crowd.

Dfsnm9P.jpg

When the lights are back on, Vengeance has his hands wrapped around Vibert's throat, but a figure from the crowd in a black mask runs in and blindsides Vengeance. The masked figure takes off the black mask, revealing their true identity.

JzZWnGS.jpg

The red haired individual picks Vengeance up and powerbombs him into the nearby announce table and Vibert rolls Martin into the ring as Morgan comes to his senses. Morgan locks in the Cross Atlantic Stretch and Martin is in no condition to respond. Morgan is DAVE Extreme champion due to referee stoppage.

Rolling into the ring, Martin is handed a microphone by one of the nearby ring attendants as he puts the microphone to his lips and looks at the crowd.

Johnny Martin: “I gotta hand it to you, Phil.....you played me and everyone in DAVE at Back in Black. I mean that big son of a gun that you hired to take me out was a nicely played move. You suckered me into believing I had you backed into a corner.”

The crowd starts a anti-SWF chant, but Martin cut if off quickly and continued.

<p>The JD Morgan sitdown</p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="GaEZpsT.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/GaEZpsT.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p>

He sits in the wooden chair and glances over to the camera and back at me. I give him the signal that we are rolling and he goes to speak.</p><p> </p><p>

"I'm JD Morgan and this is DAVE: Rocky Road."</p><p> </p><p>

He continues to smile as I offer him a group of generic questions about everything from how he felt about winning the belt off Martin and the feud.</p><p> </p><p>

"Well that feud was money for us. I mean fans across the Tri-State hated me and Phil, which isn't something you get too much these days outside of internet trolls, but 97 was different. You could feel it in the air, but to debut a name like that in our feud."</p><p> </p><p>

He lets out a very loud Wooooo Baby for us, which gets a few chuckles in the crowd.</p><p> </p><p>

"Phil outdid himself with that, I mean really outdid himself. Nemesis was a huge coup for DAVE in midst of HGC and SWF trying to tie us all down. This was special and everyone in the back knew it and we all had to step our game up for it. "</p>

Cowboys From Hell plays us into this edition of DAVE as Phil Vibert shimmies his way down the ring alongside his big, red-haired friend. The big man cracks a smile as the crowd pelts the duo with boos, but Vibert continues to dance to Pantera as the music ramps up the anger of the DAVE fans. Vibert takes a microphone from Nemesis who snatched it from a attendant and the two enter the ring. Vibert doesn't stop his dance routine until the music ends and then gives the biggest smile to the ruckus DAVE crowd.

Phil Vibert: “DAVE. It feels good to be standing inside the same ring that cost Johnny Martin that Extreme title.”

The crowd detest this and show their displeasure with more ruckus chants and boos.

Phil Vibert: “I touch a nerve? You people actually thought Johnny was gonna walk out of Black in Black with that Extreme title? Because of his butt buddy, Vengeance? You see all my bases were covered and checked and all I had to do was make a call to the big man here and your friend, Johnny Martin was nothing more than another name in history. Johnny boy, this whole thing was planned from the start and you can't say I didn't give you a choice.”

Emma Chase makes her way out to the tune of Until It Sleeps with a microphone in hand and the crowd tears her into shreds. Constant chants about sleeping with her and loud chants about her going back home are on full display.

Emma Chase: “I am Freddie Datsun's former lover and he wasn't man enough to please me in the bedroom, which is why he ran to this backwater promotion and pretended to wrestle. You couldn't handle the shame of being a inferior man and now you run here to play hero to these trash crowds and that bimbo who helps you? I'm here to proclaim that I am free of you Freddie, free of you and all of your games. You couldn't handle my needs, but Eric Tyler satisfies all of them."

Emma smirks as she delivers the last line, dropping the microphone as the audience pelts her with boos.

Both men try their best to use the environment as a weapon and Tanner rakes Datsun in the eye and follows up with a suplex to the concrete floor, leaving Freddie writhing in pain. Tanner smirks and runs off before anyone else can show up, but he has done his job. A targeted attack on Freddie Datsun to send him a message.

<p>JD Morgan explains the in-ring excellence</p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="GaEZpsT.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/GaEZpsT.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

"Alot of people think DAVE and they immediately run to the weapons and blood, but no one sees the fact we had a very solid in-ring basis in the company." JD Morgan shifts in his wooden chair as it lets out a little creak. Its smaller frame in comparison to the man sitting in it, makes it hard to shift in, but Morgan is able to fit well even with the occasional creak here and there. </p><p> </p><p>

"We had myself, Eric Tyler, Nemesis, Johnny Martin and Vin Tanner all in that company at once and anyone of those guys could make magic in between ropes. I feel that once Phil started to embrace the workhorse technical wrestling, DAVE as a whole benefited. The fans got used to the style and it became somewhat of an association with us in the late 90s, but most of DAVE is remembered today as the rebel, in your face company that offered blood, sex and violence. The company was a lot more than that."</p>

Just wanted to say I appreciate all the comments of support and engagement with the diary. Hopefully all the plans for this come to head.

DAVE returns to the Pennsylvania area with another action-packed show

Chris Caulfield will meet Henry Lee in a hardcore match and you can expect blood to be spilled between the two. Which man will look upon the sight of their blood and keep going and which will falter and whimper at the sight of blood upon them?

The wild beast, Big Cat Brandon meets Michael Cook in a match that will be sure to pit primal power against a the mat based style of Cook. The pure power of Brandon is sure to play a part, but its raw and untamed power, can Cook take advantage of it?

In Our Main Event, Phil Vibert has put his two best men in DAVE Extreme champion, JD Morgan and Nemesis up against Johnny Martin and Vengeance in what should be a action packed main event that sets the title picture for DAVE clear. Martin is eager to gain his title back, Vengeance wants to extract the sins of Vibert and Nemesis looks to make Johnny Martin's life hell, while JD Morgan simply looks to keep ahold of his Extreme title.
