No Ordinary Men [CVerse]

CWIWrestling.com was able to get the following video after the conclusion of No Ordinary Men.

Taylor Gordy was in front of the camera.

Gordy, "We have heard there is an instant going on backstage. We're going to try to capture it on video."

Taylor Gordy led the cameraman threw the backstage area of the Fountain Square Theatre. It isn't an impressive backstage area -- there are four changing rooms, all with the doors closed (babyface male, babyface female, heel male, and heel female -- not that it says those on the door. It just says Male #1, Male #2, etc.). There is a small area for eating, with bottles of water and Gatorade and grocery-store bought sandwiches and chips. Nothing fancy. There's a room that looks like it is for storage, and Gordy held up a hand to stop the camera.

Gordy, "We have to be quiet."

The Texas Express and American Gold are nose to nose. Clearly they have been arguing from some time.

Christie, "That's some bulls**t and you know it. How the hell could you do that? I thought we were friends?"

Turk tries to pull Cooper back as Chamberlain and English shrug.

Chamberlain, "You wouldn't give us another shot at the tag titles. You wouldn't give us our rematch. We had to make a case. It's not personal."

Chrisite, "Not personal? Not f***ing personal? You cost us the World Titles. You cost us guaranteed money. It doesn't get more f***ing personal."

Chamberlain shrugged again.

Chamberlain, "We disagree. But if you're not happy -- we can always wrestle for the tag titles next month."

Turk Trenneman spoke this time.

Trenneman, "You think we're going to give you a shot? Y'all cost us the World Titles AND you lost the number one contender's match. You're not in line. It's not our choice."

This outright denial of a match seemed to really infuriate American Gold.

Chamberlain, "Not your choice? Not your damn choice? You're the damn champs! If you wanted us in the ring we would be in the ring. Y'all just don't want to get in the ring with us 'cause you know that we'll whoop that ass and you'll lose those belts."

The volume was getting louder. There was some shoving back and forth and the commotion clearly caught the attention of some other people backstage.

All of the CWI officials, agents, and Marv Earnest hit the area -- pushing past Taylor Gordy and the cameraman to get in between the two teams. Marv speaks -- in his first on camera appearance as the boss.

Earnest, "Stop it right now or you guys are going to get fined and suspended. We're not doing this. We're not doing backstage fights. We're not. Stop it."

The Texas Express was red in the face, but they started to back off while American Gold just smirked.

Chamberlain, "Whatever ya'll say. Coop. Turk. We'll be getting those belts back. We'll be gettin' you back. Don't you worry."

Taylor Gordy turned to the camera.

Gordy, "It looks like we haven't heard the last of The Texas Express and American Gold. "

The video ended.

Funky Fedora channels his inner Boogie Woogie Man and got to gloat a bit about getting his World Title Match. But little did he know the man who he took out of action was coming for revenge tonight. I loved Nate’s return here, he only lost the title cause of his broken arm and am hoping he’ll win it back. This has the makings of a DeMarcus title win to close their feud eventually but I’m ready for the ride we’ll go on. Will DeMarcus regain it right away or will Funky squeak out the win next month? Will he even be champion when he gets the World Title Match?

Thanks for the call out in the four lines of the Indiana Heavyweight Title match lol. Still not a fan of “Any Given Night” style but I’ll live with it. Grappling gets an easy win here over the guy who’s never been in a singles match before. But more than that he beat a rough tough bad ass who could’ve snapped him in half in a bar. This ain’t no bar though and there’s a reason he’s called Mr. Grappling.

Steven Parker makes his shocking debut in the CWI Arena oh I mean Fountain Square Theatre… But he’s not alone as he’s interrupted by Stardust. My guess is these two fight next month in a were both really popular match. I could see the winner going against who ever the champion is after DeMarcus v Fedora. It was a good use of both talents and adds intrigue as either one could come away with the win in their first matches in CWI.

Ashley Keith vs. Lucy Stone McFly last month saw the 3G Grappler bring Miss Keith to her level. The two went to the time limit and I was expecting something like that happening again. But instead Ashley had other plans and used some underhanded tactics to pull the victory from under Lucy’s nose (or more appropriately out of her hair). Ashley seems to be a big cog in the CWI machine especially pulling out the win here. I could see Lucy getting the win back like what happened with Honey Badger but Ashley has more upside then Honey did no doubt so I’m intrigued where she’ll be going here especially with Tameka as champion. I really appreciate how far you’ve come with the Women’s Division. Gone from being the Steph Blake show, to being a multi-dimensional chaotic field of people we’ve gotten to know. Kudos to you for that Historian.

CWI’s prodigal son Zippy Deverell didn’t have the brains or brawn to overcome The Hangman. But that’s what the Taggs are for anyway. I’m surprised they didn’t help during the match to help their fearless leader win, but it also made me feel more respect for Zippy that he took the beating and still tried fighting to overcome the Unstoppable Executioner. Poor Hangman got left to rot after the match though with no Grappling in sight. I would’ve thought even though Hangman’s a bad guy the adage, “Enemy of my Enemy” is my friend would apply here. But I guess Grappling has a different way of viewing things.

The tag team gold main evented with the CWI born Bred for Battle defending the world title. Texas Express and American Gold had their feud slowly build over months and tonight it exploded with their heel turn. Gold blatantly assaulted Texas Express, not just cost them the belts but legit assaulted them. Then afterwards had the gall to say they deserve a title shot, I was surprised Texas Express didn’t get out a lasso hog tie those SOBs and givem a Texas butt whooping. We got to the brawl after the show and it became a big deal when we finally see Marv pull out his ownership card and try to break the guys up. This is how you make Tag Team wrestling feel important!

Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis was back in action in Edinburgh, Indiana for another exciting night of pro wrestling action. This night saw the U.S. debut of British grappler Neil Warburton -- who was looking for a change after the close of his home promotion, Championship Wrestling from Wigan. It also saw the CWI return of "The Oklahoma Thunderbolt" Jason Patterson as he took on Mr. Grappling in the Main Event for the Indiana Heavyweight Championship.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match One</strong>: In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Luis Torres defeated Ryan Caulfield in 8:26 by pinfall with an Ancient Heel Kick.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match Two</strong>: In a bout that had sub-par wrestling and little heat, Neil Warburton defeated Nebo Martell in 6:07 by submission with a Texas Deathlock.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match Three</strong>: In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Samuel Danzig defeated AC King in 5:31 by pinfall with a Poison Warhead.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match Four</strong>: In a decent match, Dan Stone III defeated Ben Williams in 9:45 by submission with a Stone Ankle Stretch.</p><p> </p><p>

Texan Justice, Samson Sharpe and Hoss Handley, came to the ring. Samson announced that he was through with Deverell's Army and he and Hoss were entering the March Madness tournament.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Main Event</strong>: In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Mr. Grappling defeated Jason Patterson in 28:20 by submission. Mr. Grappling makes defence number seven of the CWI Indiana title.</p><p> </p><p>

Ladies Night was live once again in Bloomington, Indiana for another exciting action of women's-only professional wrestling. The women of CWI continue to prove that they are up for the task of carrying a brand of shows on their own. The main event saw another chapter in the War Maidens against the San Diego Girls/Yvonne Ericks feud that has become a center-piece of the women's division.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match One</strong>: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, The Hooligans defeated Annette Kerr and Frances Harris in 12:21 when Hannah Hooligan submitted Frances Harris.</p><p> </p><p>

Canadian strongwoman Storm came to the ring to demonstrate her strength by doing squats while holding the ringsteps.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match Two</strong>: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Mellow Flashhart defeated Holly Sims in 8:44 by pinfall with a Backflip Face Crusher.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Match Three</strong>: In a terrible match, Tzilla defeated Vera Bull in 6:34 by pinfall with an End Of The Trail.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Main Event</strong>: In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, War Maidens (Black Diamond, Urena Frost and Talia Neema) defeated Yvonne Ericks and The San Diego Girls in 22:32 when Black Diamond pinned Yvonne Ericks with a Belly To Belly Suplex.</p><p> </p><p>

In terms of in-ring work, Urena Frost was head and shoulders above everyone else.</p><p> </p><p>

Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis returns to the Fountain Square Theatre for the fourth annual March Madness tournament. The March Madness Tournament has become one of the premier tag team tournaments in all of North American professional wrestling. The tournament has previously been won by The Rock City Stars, Bred for Battle, and American Gold. Eight teams enter this year? Who will walk out with the trophy and a CWI Tag Team Title shot at Circle City Classic IV in May? You will have to be there live to find out.</p><p> </p><p>

This year, the eight teams entering are:</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Texan Justice</strong> -- Samson Sharpe and Hoss Handley reunite their tag team for the first time in several years. Can the two big rough Texans make it to the finals? Samson Sharpe recently split off from Deverell's army -- how will that play in to the reformation of his team with Hoss?</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Canadian Blonds</strong> -- Flash Savage and Robin DaLay have had an up and down career as a team since becoming a fulltime team last year. This tournament could provide them the opportunity to jump-start their team and really get their momentum building.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>The Bad Boys Of Wrestling</strong> - Ryan Powell and Shane Nelson have been a force on the independent wrestling scene -- each of them really accumulating a lot of awards. Powell won both the BMCW Championship and the GCW Championship simulatenously -- and had a year and a half reign as BMCW Champion. Nelson has also held the GCW Championship and has held their secondary title. They have also been teaming -- but have not focused on being a fulltime tag team until now. With their years of experience -- by far the most in the tournament -- </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Matt Blackburn and Chet Chavez</strong> - The only brand new tag team in the tournament. Matt Blackburn has been on the rise in Japan -- he's currently the PGHW Historical Champion, and Chet Chavez has been looking for a way to break back into the conversation in independent wrestling. The two men applied for entry in the tournament and they could be the darkhorses to win the whole tournament.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>The Dog Soldiers</strong> - This year, Ace Youngblood and Wild Red Stallion return to the tournament, marking the third time they have competed in the tournament -- last year Roger Moneteiro competed instead of Stallion. Youngblood and Stallion are former finalists in the tournament and are two-thirds of the World Six Man Champions. They have a lot of experience and a lot of chemistry as a team and might have to be the odds-on-favorites to win the tournament.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>FREEDOM</strong> - Marco Gonzalez and Juggernaut Jones enter the tournament for the first time. Both men are still relatively new to CWI and are looking to really make a name for themselves. Along with Xavi Ferrera -- they have made their intentions to be World Six Man Champions known and a meeting with Dog Soldiers could really help advance their case.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Latino Kings </strong>- Hector Galindo & Rudy Velasquez - If The Dog Soldiers might be the odds-on-favorites and The Bad Boys of Wrestling have the most combined experience, the Latino Kings easily have the most combined success. Five times they were FCW Tag Team Champions before the Puerto Rican company closed. Their experience could make them incredibly dangerous in the tournament. Since FCW closed, Galindo has not been working regularly, though Velasquez has been busy in fellow COTT companies CZCW and L-Ring.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Hank Gunn & Pepper Pelton</strong> - The eighth team in the tournament is the rising team of Hank Gunn and Pepper Pelton. They have had some success and have come up short in previous matches. Both are exciting young talents with a lot of potential, but can they turn that potential into actual success? Or will it stay potential?</p><p> </p><p>

In addition to the tournament, Nate DeMarcus and Funky Fedora will go at it for the second time for the Mid American Championship. The first time they met was in December at Christmas Clash when Nate DeMarcus had a broken arm. He was suckered into that match by Funky Fedora and Funky left with the Mid American Championship. Now that Nate is fully healed, can he reclaim the championship?</p><p> </p><p>

Felicia Luck, fresh off a big win last month, challenges the Monolith for the Women's Championship. Can Luck become a two-time women's champion AND be the first person to pin Tameka Sky?</p><p> </p><p>

The Texas Express put the Tag Team Titles on the line against The Taggs -- and American Gold is sure to be watching. Plus Zeus Maximillion, former USPW and CGC star, makes an appearance for CWI as he challenges for the Indiana Heavyweight Championship. Will Mr. Grappling be able to equal Zippy Deverell's record-setting eight defences? Or will Zeus take his place on the throne and become Indiana Heavyweight Champion?</p><p> </p><p>

This is a JAM PACKED card, perhaps the biggest card ever presented at the Fountain Square Theatre and you do not want to miss it. Get your tickets today.</p><p> </p><p>

<p>Hello! </p><p> </p><p>

I wanted to take a brief timeout before I post the show (I'm in the process of writing it; hopefully, it will be up later today or tomorrow) to say thank you for the DOTM votes. I appreciate all of the support this diary has received -- we're over 34,000 reads at the time of this writing since April 22 when this diary launched. That's just over five months which is almost 7,000 reads a month which is just incredible. I really appreciate that support. This was also the first month of the 2020 release that this diary has won Match of the Month -- and as much as I appreciate the Diary of the Month nods, it's also a feel-good moment to win for a specific match/event/angle.</p><p> </p><p>

I also wanted to take an opportunity to highlight a couple of diaries that I think are really worth reading.</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="http://greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=549848" rel="external nofollow">Granite Mountain Pro Wrestling: The Strong Climb</a> by willr0ck. willr0ck is a fantastic community member who not only churned out the Women's CVerse mod, but has also made countless graphics and renders for TEW (including the RockVerse). He's a great community member AND a great writer. Check out his diary and show him some love!</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="http://greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=547137" rel="external nofollow"></a></p><p>

The Puppets Dance (5SSW) by White Dolphin -- this is the only 5SSW's diary going on the boards and it is excellent. White Dolphin does a great job with joshi wrestling and trying to capture the unique flavor of 5SSW. They have churned out a bunch of content for the diary already and I definitely think it is worth the read. I've really enjoyed it thus far and I hope it continues to produce great content.</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="http://greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=549361" rel="external nofollow">Golden Dynasty [PGHW]</a> by CPBHBK - Another great puro diary (these first three all are!). PGHW has a special spot in my heart as the first Japanese CVerse company I really played and they would have remained my favorite company had it not been for DarK_RaideR's continued sensational presentation of BCG that has turned me into a full-blown mark for all things Black Canvas. CPBHBK has produced some really good content and really laid the foundation for a great run.</p><p> </p><p>

<a href="http://greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=549688" rel="external nofollow">NYCW: The Tri State Hustle</a> by arwink - I'm not normally an NYCW guy, for whatever reason. I like a lot of the talent on their roster but have never gotten into them. Arwink has done a great job of building an interesting company and I really like what they are doing. So give 'em a read!</p><p> </p><p>

Anyway -- these aren't the only four diaries that I read (my love of DarK_RaideR and the Lloyd's work is no secret) and I try to read as many diaries as I can, but I wanted to take a moment to really highlight these four to bring some (hopefully) extra eyeballs to them so give them a read and see if you like them too, I bet you will!</p><p> </p><p>

And if you haven't gotten your predictions in yet and you want to -- go right ahead!</p><p> </p><p>

Hello!

This was also the first month of the 2020 release that this diary has won Match of the Month -- and as much as I appreciate the Diary of the Month nods, it's also a feel-good moment to win for a specific match/event/angle.

I also wanted to take an opportunity to highlight a couple of diaries that I think are really worth reading.

Granite Mountain Pro Wrestling: The Strong Climb by willr0ck. willr0ck is a fantastic community member who not only churned out the Women's CVerse mod, but has also made countless graphics and renders for TEW (including the RockVerse). He's a great community member AND a great writer. Check out his diary and show him some love!

I've really enjoyed it thus far and I hope it continues to produce great content.

Golden Dynasty [PGHW] by CPBHBK - Another great puro diary (these first three all are!). PGHW has a special spot in my heart as the first Japanese CVerse company I really played and they would have remained my favorite company had it not been for DarK_RaideR's continued sensational presentation of BCG that has turned me into a full-blown mark for all things Black Canvas. CPBHBK has produced some really good content and really laid the foundation for a great run.

NYCW: The Tri State Hustle by arwink - I'm not normally an NYCW guy, for whatever reason. I like a lot of the talent on their roster but have never gotten into them. Arwink has done a great job of building an interesting company and I really like what they are doing. So give 'em a read!

Anyway -- these aren't the only four diaries that I read (my love of DarK_RaideR and the Lloyd's work is no secret) and I try to read as many diaries as I can, but I wanted to take a moment to really highlight these four to bring some (hopefully) extra eyeballs to them so give them a read and see if you like them too, I bet you will!

And if you haven't gotten your predictions in yet and you want to -- go right ahead!

Historian

Thank you for the shout out! I really appreciate it.

The first match in the fourth annual March Madness tournament saw the reuniting Texan Justice take on the Canadian Blonds. It wasn’t a long match, but it was a good high-energy opening contest. Three of the four men in the match were big powerful hoss-types and the high-flying Flash Savage. All of which combined to make an entertaining opening contest. Texan Justice controlled the majority of the short match and Samson Sharpe was able to hit the Full Nelson Bomb on Flash Savage to get the win and punch Texan Justice’s ticket to the second round.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Texan Justice defeated Canadian Blonds in 5:57 when Samson Sharpe pinned Flash Savage with a Full Nelson Bomb.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Another short first round match, The Bad Boys of Wrestling were able to get a fairly easy win over Matt Blackburn and Chet Chavez. Blackburn and Chavez had never teamed before and some questioned why they were given a spot in the tournament, but they the opportunity to score a big upset here and they came up short. Blackburn looked particularly impressive and it looks like the young grappler is finally turning a corner in his career. He’s really developed in Japan --where he is the PGHW Historical Japan Champion and he got to show some of that fire in this contest -- and he had to watch on when Ryan Powell hit the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Star Treatment</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> on Chet Chavez to get the victory and The Bad Boys of Wrestling will be moving on to wrestle Texan Justice.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In a decent match, The Bad Boys Of Wrestling defeated Matt Blackburn and Chet Chavez in 6:05 when Ryan Powell pinned Chet Chavez with a Star Treatment.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

The Dog Soldiers versus FREEDOM w/ Lucinda Lush</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In January, the collective known as FREEDOM made it clear that they have eyes on the World Six-Man Championship currently held by The Dog Soldiers. The Soldiers have been a premier trio in pro wrestling for the past four years. They are on their second reign as World Six-Man Champions, but today it was a tag team match with a semi-finals spot in the March Madness tournament on the line. Youngblood and Stallion are an incredibly experienced duo -- having worked a lot of matches together over the past four years. Youngblood is a real tag team specialist and his leadership was really on display here. Stallion is a big, power hitter with an explosive offensive repertoire and they make for a good babyface duo. Gonzalez and Jones are still learning each other’s timing but they have potential to be a really strong tag team. They isolated Ace Youngblood and really worked the smaller Dog Soldier over -- including a very impressive Slingshot Shoulder Tackle from Juggernaut Jones -- a very impressive athletic move from a man his size. Youngblood was able to make the tag to Wild Red Stallion for the hot tag and come back and Stallion went to work. Jones and Gonzalez took several big bumps for Stallion. Stallion hit Gonzalez with the </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>Lakota Cutter</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> to get the win and the Dog Soldiers are off to the semi finals again.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Ace Youngblood and Wild Red Stallion defeated Marco Gonzalez and Juggernaut Jones in 8:26 when Wild Red Stallion pinned Marco Gonzalez with a Lakota Cutter.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

The final quarter-final match was up next. The Latino Kings were making their CWI debut against Hank Gunn and Pepper Pelton. Gunn and Pelton have formed a good tag team in the past several months, a really capable tag team -- but a team that has really struggled with consistency. They have that dreaded wod </span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><em>potential</em></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> but they need to turn that potential into wins and consistency. The Kings have had a lot of wins in their careers. Five times they were FCW Tag Team Champions and their experience was on full display here. They worked brilliantly as a tag team in isolating Hank Gunn. The Kings weren’t working heel here -- both teams were babyfaces -- but the Kings got to showcase their chemistry as a unit. In the end, the Latino Kings got the victory and are off to the semi-finals.</span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"> </span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;">

Last month, Ashley Keith scored a submission victory over Lucy Stone-McFly and this month, she had the other Lucy on the CWI roster (many of the CWI women were working for CWWF tonight). Trigg is a bright prospect -- trained by Ashley’s uncle -- but she isn’t Ashley Keith. Ashley Keith completely controlled this match. She looked as if one of her cousins or her uncle had dialed back time and was a bit smaller (and okay, a woman). She had all the intensity one would expect of a Keith. She knew her ring positioning and really worked like a veteran. She got Lucy Trigg down and locked in a </strong></strong></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong><em>Proton Lock</em></strong></strong></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> and got the submission victory.</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

The semi-finals of the March Madness tournament kicked off with Texan Justice against The Bad Boys of Wrestling. This was a solid match up. It wasn’t spectacular, but it wasn’t supposed to be. The key of a tournament is not having guys burn everything out before the finals. The key is to tell a story across however many matches are in the tournament, to build the wrestlers into something -- and this accomplished that. The Bad Boys of Wrestling were extra heelish and they worked on big Samson Sharpe’s arm -- trying to take out the power of the Lariat and his ability to hold the Full Nelson for the Full Nelson Slam. This left Hoss to take the hot tag and the newcomer, making his in-ring CWI debut at this show -- had the Texas Cowboy fire -- which is a different kind of fire than a typical Southern-style babyface. It is rougher. More rough and tumble without the smooth edges. It wasn’t supposed to be pretty. He hit some big back elbows and some wicked forearms and then hit Shane Nelson with a Piledriver and Texan Justice was on their way to the finals.</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

The Latino Kings versus The Dog Soldiers</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

The second semi-final match pit the two teams with the most experience left in the tournament. The Latino Kings with their five title reigns against two-thirds of the red hot Dog Soldiers. This was a great contest. They didn’t have a lot of time, but they really used the time they had wisely. Neither team dominated -- instead it was a back and forth match up with each team getting to showcase their strengths. Wild Red Stallion was definitely positioned to look like the biggest threat in the match, but he was taken out of the match when he chased Xavi Ferrera from ringside. This distraction allowed the Latino Kings to hit a double brainbuster on Monteiro and then Galindo hit the Shooting Star Press to get the victory and punch the Kings ticket to the finals.</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

In an exceptional match, The Latino Kings defeated Roger Monteiro and Wild Red Stallion in 7:46 when Hector Galindo pinned Roger Monteiro with a Shooting Star Press after a distraction from Xavi Ferrera.</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

Mr. Grappling has been on a tear the last several months. Ever since returning to the ring in October, he’s been almost unstoppable -- outside of the match with the Hangman where he won by DQ. He’s really been honed in as a wrestling machine. The veteran Zeus Maxmillion -- one of the best wrestlers to never crack superstardom in the past twenty years -- Zeus came in with a chip on his shoulder after having been let go from USPW. Zeus wrestled like he wanted to be Indiana Champion, like he was here for the long haul, but Mr. Grappling was able to suplex Zeus Maxmillion several times and lock in the Figure four Leglock to get the submission victory and his eighth successful defense of the Indiana Heavyweight Champion.</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

The Taggs w/ Haley Buck versus The Texas Express ©</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

For the first time in four years, the Tag Team Titles were defended at March Madness. The Texas Express were putting the titles on the line against the Tagg brothers. The Taggs have been close to reaching the next level in their career. They’ve developed into a very physical, very effective tag team and their pairing with Haley Buck and Zippy Deverell has allowed them to work on their charisma and their presence without having to carry a lot of promos themselves. This was a good, physical tag team match. There weren’t a lot of holds or counters. This was punches and kicks and elbows and forearms and a couple of headbutts. This was some brawling around the ring. This was clearly trying to be different than the tag tournament matches by being a little wilder, a little crazier. Bret Graveson, the official assigned this contest, gave both teams a lot of room within the rules. He didn’t really apply the count. He wanted to let both teams solve this in the ring and they ended up back in the ring. The Taggs had Turk isolated in the ring when Maliek Chamberlain came walking down to the ring. He started jaw-jacking with Cooper, who hopped off the apron to argue with Chamberlain. While Cooper was distracted, the Taggs hit the </strong></strong></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong><em>Spike Piledriver</em></strong></strong></span></span></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> on Turk and we had new tag team champions!</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

Texan Justice versus The Latino Kings</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

The finals of the fourth annual March Madness tournament were upon us. Samson Sharpe was selling his arm throughout the whole match from the earlier match. The Latino Kings were a bit fresher -- but they had been through two matches as well. Much like the Bad Boys of Wrestling -- the Kings focused on Samson Sharpe’s arm. They were trying to take the big powerhouse out of the match -- and while both teams were working babyface here, the Kings took the ‘heat’ portion of the match, they just didn’t cheat. They worked as a unit to keep Samson Sharpe isolated from Hoss. Sharpe was able to get to Hoss and the crowd was really into Hoss’s big comeback. He was all fists and elbows and unpolished cowboy brawling. The Kings brawled back and the match really picked up. Rudy Velasquez was backdropped out of the ring with a big bump. Hoss hit a big Fall-Away Slam on Hector and then tagged back in Samson. The big man hit the ropes and came roaring back with a Lariat to end all Lariats. The main event of the evening. The rematch. The Mid American Championship on the line. They had been building to this. Even with the tournament and all of the other matches, these two had a lot of time. This was a classic, old-school style main event. It was the kind of match both were comfortable with. Nate having been trained in Baltimore, having come from the Bootcamp and Fedora being a classic, old-school Southern heel with the Strut and the hair and the swagger. The crowd was really into this match. They were firmly behind Nate. Every time Nate got his hands on Funky, the crowd really went crazy. Nate hit several big suplexes early on in the match that showcase his power. Funky sold everything great and then powdered out and ran and tried to hide and then took a cheap shot to take control. He took the match over and really worked Nate over. It was slow and deliberate. It was the right kind of heat for this match. He hit a prolonged Strut and the crowd booed. Nate made the big comeback and tossed Funky around. Funky grabbed a handful of referee Jez McArthur’s shirt and used Jez as a shield to prevent any more harm from happening While that was going on, Bear Barnes came from the crowd and blasted Nate DeMarcus with the Big Boot. That allowed Funky to hit the Top Rope Knee Drop and get the pin and his second successful defense of the Mid American Championship!</strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong> </strong></strong></span></span></span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><span style="font-family:Georgia;"><span style="font-size:12px;"><strong><strong>

Championship Wrestling Indianapolis is coming off the very successful March Madness tournament. Heading into April and the march, no pun intended, to Circle City Classic IV, CWI presented its two monthly local shows -- the first in Edinburgh, Indiana at the Edinburgh American Legion. This show saw the arrival of "The Rhino" Lynton Minehead who has relocated to the United States after the closure of Championship Wrestling from Wigan, joining fellow Brit Neil Warburton on the CWI roster.

Match One: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, Victor Crash defeated Reginald Wilhelm in 7:22 by pinfall with an Ice Backbreaker.

Match Two: In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Hank Gunn and Pepper Pelton defeated Lance Austin and Luis Torres in 9:38 when Hank Gunn pinned Luis Torres with a Super Kick.

The Indiana Heavyweight Champion came to the ring just to say hello. This wasn't a promo to really advance anything -- just to do some crowd play and get a nice babyface segment.

Match Three: In a terrible match, Lynton Minehead defeated AC King in 8:58 by pinfall with a Tombstone Piledriver.

Match Four: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Neil Warburton defeated AP Gumble in 6:30 by submission with a Texas Deathlock.

Main Event: In a decent match, Matt Blackburn defeated Jason Patterson in 13:44 by pinfall with a Springboard Forearm.

Ladies Night continues to impress and add new fans. The women have been tearing down the house with an ultra-competitive division.

Match One: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Allie Perks defeated Joanne Broughton in 7:04 by pinfall with a Flatliner.

Match Two: In a decent match, Esperanza Montero defeated Sophie Steele in 10:11 by pinfall with a Destiny Explosion.

After defeating Sophie Steele, Esperanza Montero made it clear that she's coming for Tameka Sky and a Women's Championship opportunity.

Match Three: In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Stella Saint defeated Frances Harris in 9:42 by submission.

Match Four: In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Talia Neema defeated Coco Malloy in 14:27 by pinfall with The Hieroglyph.

Main Event: In an exceptional match, Urena Frost defeated Izzy Quick in 15:02 by pinfall with a BattleCry.

One year ago, the wrestling world and Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis were shocked with the death of Conner Threepwood. His death was a tragedy that sent shockwaves throughout. A year later, CWI is prepared to honor Conner Threepwood's memory by holding the first ever Conner Threepwood Memorial event.

This show will be special for a variety of reasons. Not only will CWI be honoring Conner Threepwood by making him the first inductee into the CWI Hall of Fame -- CWI will be holding the Conner Threepwood Memorial Cup. The Memorial Cup will be crowned in a four-man tournament. Conner Threepwood was a world-class submission wrestler. His trademark hold, the Stretch Plum, won him countless matches and became one of the most feared moves in professional wrestling. In honor of that, the Conner Threepwood Memorial Cup will be contested in a special match where only submissions can end the match. This is not the same as an I Quit match -- you do not have to verbally say I Quit and weapons are still illegal. If one of the four men in the tournament are disqualified, they forfeit their pay. The winner receives the Conner Threepwood Memorial Cup and $2500 cash.

Competing this year are the following four men:

Mr. Grappling. Conner Threepwood's last tag team partner and current Indiana Heavyweight Champion.

Crockett Tubbs. Conner Threepwood's longtime partner who was with Conner for multiple NOTBPW Tag Team Title wins.

Acid. Returning to active wrestling for one night. Conner Threepwood's mentor and trainer as well as a legend in American and Japanese pro wrestling.

Riley McManus. Current NYCW Empire Champion and one of the best technical wrestlers on the independent wrestling scene. His Cross-Face Chickenwing is a devastating submission hold.

I’m writing this as I read the show.

Oh how the Blonds have fallen. They were once the top 6-man team and now they’ve fallen to a lower card team who loses in 6 minutes. But Sharpe & Handley make their debut with a strong performance and Sharpe gets some momentum after being slapped out by Zippy and kicked out of the Army. Sharpe & Handley’s win here gives the impression they’re gonna be something more than just a random team.

Matt Blackburn is the only person who I feel like we’ve seen develop without seeing him do anything besides being a jobber by being in PGHW. The accolade of winning the Historical Japan title gets him over like you said of making a turn in his career.

Dog Soldiers vs FREEDOM was a big first round match, both 6-man teams normally with FREEDOM being new. The experience of Dog Soldiers take them to the next level and make it to the next round. Stallion continues to slowly build himself as a big star for the future.

FCW taking over CWI with The Latino Kings arriving and they get put over as the team Hyatt picks to win which is high praise as they are the only team mentioned at the start of the show. It wasn’t a surprise they pulled the win from the inexperienced ‘Gunn Show’ team, I don’t know if they’ll make it far in CWI though since we do get those one nighters a lot, curious.

Funky continues to harness his Jiving Cocky Aura into a good promo talking up his place in CWI. He’s looking for the power and wants it all, especially when going against the POWER of Nate DeMarcus. It’s an accurate way to portray someone who is scared but is over compensating his lack of confidence with over confidence. But who knows Funky had a plan to get his title shot so maybe he has a plan tonight.

Texan Justice showed what they’re made of beating Bad Boys of Wrestling. One thing that crossed my mind is the inclusion of a second babyface team with Texas in their name. We got Texas Express already and now Texan Justice. I think something like Outlaw Justice or The Rodeo Boys would just add some difference between the two so they don’t melt together.

Dog Soldiers were favorites in this but were taken out by Xavi’s interference which continues their troubles. Stallion vs Xavi I see as a future one on one match after the 6-men tag that I assume is coming.

Grappling gets a big win to get his momentum to rise even further. He got the treatment the Mid American Champion usually gets with bringing in big names to fall to them.

American Gold basically said, so we can’t get a title shot then y’all won’t be champions. These two teams have been at each other lowkey for awhile. Only one team could have the top babyface spot and Texas Express got it. The Taags also get a big win to put them over as finally being a top team. The win is a little overshadowed but they got the titles now which is what matters. Now we’re gonna get Texas Express vs. American Gold I’m amped and it’s not even for the titles.

Justice make a statement in their debut as a team. Samson needed Hoss to be that shot in the ‘arm’ pun intended. Now their off to take on the Taggs and I have no idea what will happen but I do know it will be a fight!

Finally Nate looks to get his payback on Funky and whips him from pillar to post. He had him right where he wanted him and I liked the idea of not having to hear that sniveling coward Funky Fedora again. But alas Bear Barnes probably Funky’s new bodyguard came out to give him the win. Nate vs Bear is the feud going forward I assume and it’s smart it gives Nate an out to not have to go for the title for a bit, I wonder who will challenge Funky next.

As the show starts, Marvin Earnest leaves his broadcast position at the ringside announce table and climbs into the ring. He is holding a microphone and he is handed something that he keeps tucked under his arm.

Earnest, “It was a year ago that we lost a member of the pro wrestling family. Last year, we lost Conner Threepwood. Conner was instrumental in establshing Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis. He was our first champion. He represented CWI with respect, with dignity. He was a true professional athlete -- with an emphasis on the word professional. There isn’t a person who has interacted with Conner Threepwood that has a negative thing to say about him. He was a real class act and his death was a tragedy that we are still trying to get through. I was fortunate enough to call Conner Threepwood my friend. We laughed together. We shared successes and failures together. He was the kind of man that all professional athletes, and men, should aspire to be. It is with great honor and great sadness that tonight I announce Conner Threepwood as the founding induction in the Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis Hall of Fame. May his memory, his legacy, live on forever.”

Marvin Earnest shows what he has tucked under his arm -- it is a CWI Hall of Fame plaque for Conner Threepwood.

Earnest, “I will be delivering this plaque to Conner’s family -- who could not be here this evening to receive it in person but they did want to thank all of the CWI fans who donated money, who shared their sympathy. They truly appreciate all of the love they have been given. Thank you all.”

Marvin exited the ring with the plaque.

The Dog Soldiers versus FREEDOM w/ Lucinda Lush

The World Six-Men Champions were in non-title action here against FREEDOM. This was a very competitive opening contest. This was clearly a match designed to set up a title match down the line -- and the workers worked like it. They didn’t go into any of their major spots -- they kept it simple but physical. They kept Wild Red Stallion and Juggernaut Jones away from each other -- making sure that the two powerhouses didn’t lock horns. The Dog Soldiers got to control a good portion of the match as champions, but FREEDOM wasn’t above cheating -- and they worked the referee’s positioning to keep him out of position so they could utilize illegal double teams -- and the coup de grace was Lucinda Lush getting involved and allowing Xavi Ferrera to take Roger Monteiro down and hit the big High Impact Frog Splash to get the three count.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, FREEDOM (Xavi Ferrera, Marco Gonzalez and Juggernaut Jones) defeated Dog Soldiers (Ace Youngblood, Roger Monteiro and Wild Red Stallion) in 12:12 when Xavi Ferrera pinned Roger Monteiro with a High Impact Frog Splash after Lucinda Lush interfered.

In terms of in-ring work, Xavi Ferrera was head and shoulders above everyone else.

Esperanza Montero versus "The Monolith" Tameka Sky ©

The women’s division continues to be retooled. Over the past year, it has really received a much-needed facelift as new women were brought in and the Ladies Night series of local shows has allowed for more women’s matches and the establishment of more females in the fans consciousness. Esperanza Montero, the niece of legendary Luis Montero Sr., had an opportunity here against the Monolith. Tameka Sky has been a great monster in the women’s division. She towers over even the tallest of the women, she is athletic and moves with a surprising amount of agility in the ring -- but she also takes bumps and gives the other women just enough offense that it is believable that she could lose. Montero worked a fast-paced match against the bigger woman. Her strategy was to try to dance around the Monolith, hit her quick and fast and bounce out of reach. The strategy was effective for a few minutes and the crowd was really behind Montero -- but then Sky got a grip on her and went to work and that was it. Sky controlled Montero from then on. Several big slams set up for Tameka Sky’s Jacknife Powerbomb that she recently adopted -- allowing her to differentiate from the Chokeslams that seem to be so favored by monsters. She got the pin and her fourth successful title defense.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Tameka Sky defeated Esperanza Montero in 7:33 by pinfall. Tameka Sky makes defence number four of the CWI Women's title.

The Femme Fatales versus The San Diego Girls ©

The Women’s Tag Team Titles were on the line next. This was the first time they’ve been defended since the San Diego Girls won them -- they were originally scheduled to be defended in March, but many of the women on the CWI roster were unavailable, so the match was moved to April. This was a rematch of the tournament finals and these two teams wrestled like women who knew each other. These two teams are clearly the standard-bearers of the Women’s ag Team Division -- and it was clear how they worked with one another. Frost has continued to develop herself into perhaps the best women’s wrestler on the roster. She consistently carries whatever match she is in and her power/flying offense hybrid makes her a unique competitor. Neema has all the presence a star needs and her time in EWA has only enhanced her character ability -- where as Coco and Izzy are two lucha-styled flyers with great chemistry and the match just flowed beautifully. When Coco Malloy made the blind tag on Izzy and then came off the top rope for the Flying Bulldog onto Talia Neema, the crowd really popped and the San Diego Girls successfully defended their championships.

In an exceptional match, The San Diego Girls defeated Femme Fatales in 12:55 when Coco Malloy pinned Talia Neema with a Flying Bulldog. The San Diego Girls make defence number one of the CWI Women's Tag Team titles.

Urena Frost carried the match in terms of in-ring performance.

Crockett Tubbs versus Acid

The first match of the Conner Threepwood Memorial Cup tournament was up next. Crockett Tubbs was Conner Threepwood’s longtime tag team partner. They won multiple NOTBPW Tag Team Titles together as the Fighting Irish and he was a fitting opponent in this match. Acid was mostly retired these days, only doing the occasional spot show but the veteran wrestler was back in CWI for the tournament. As Conner Threepwood’s trainer and mentor, he also fit the tournament concept very well. These two had a very solid technical wrestling match up. It was obvious that both men were over the hill physically -- neither had the stamina they once had. Acid, in particular, isn’t that athlete he was in his prime. Once a spectacular flyer, he was mostly grounded in this mach outside of one big senton dive that Tubbs actually countered and rolled through and got in the Subway STF that forced the submission.

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Crockett Tubbs defeated Acid in 7:33 by submission with a Subway STF.

"Indiana's Finest" Mr. Grappling versus "The Georgia Bulldog" Riley McManus

The second tournament match was up next. Mr. Grappling, Conner Threepwood’s protege and former partner was up against Riley McManus. McManus was the reigning NYCW Empire Champion and one of the most feared technicians in the world. His Cross-Faced Chickenwing was one of the most feared submission holds in professional wrestling. The crowd was really into this match, both men were working face. Mr. Grappling has really engriated himself to the CWI faithful -- and McManus’ exposure through WrestleWorld has made him a top independent wrestling star when most people didn’t see that coming. Grappling and McManus worked slow here. It was a technical-minded match with no strikes other than a couple of chops. These were two men trying to out wrestle one another. McManus focused on the shoulder of Mr. Grappling -- trying to soften it up for the Cross-Faced Chickenwing. When Grappling had control, he was focused on the knee of McManus -- trying to soften him up for the Figure Four Leglock. It was a great classic back and forth babyface match. McManus locked in the Cross-Face Chickenwing but Mr. Grappling managed to counter it and hit a big Back Suplex and then locked in the Figure Four Leglock.

In an exceptional match, Mr. Grappling defeated Riley McManus in 15:29 by submission.

The Hangman & Texan Justice versus Deverell's Army w/ Haley Buck

Last month, Texan Justice won the March Madness tournament and the Taggs won the CWI Tag Team Titles -- so they have a date at the Circle City Classic in May. While The Hangman defeated Zippy in February -- his army attacked him after the match and their saga isn’t over yet. This was another chapter in the saga and the heat was definitely better than the wrestling (not that the wrestling was bad). The Hangman continued to show his versatility as a performer and was really able to do some impressive things -- including the big man coming off the top rope for a big clothesline that really popped the crowd. He wasn’t super involved in the match -- and Zippy made sure he was NEVER in the ring at the same time as The Hangman. The match was very physical -- Texan Justice, as a duo, is still unpolished but physical. Two big raw-boned country boys who can fight against the big Montana brothers. Wolfie and Kalder and The Hangman and Samson ended up brawling at the side of the ring. The referee had his back turned, which allowed Haley to slide Zippy the infamous Coal Miner’s Glove. He slid it on his hand and punched Hoss Handley right in the jaw and then hit the Spinning Bulldog on him. He tossed the glove back to his cousin, Haley, on the outside and made he cover and the referee turned around and counted the three.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Deverell's Army (Zippy Deverell, Kalder Tagg and Wolfie Tagg) defeated The Hangman and Texan Justice in 14:27 when Zippy Deverell pinned Hoss Handley with a Spinning Bulldog.

Nate "the Great" DeMarcus versus Bear Barnes

Bear Barnes has been an interesting case study for CWI. Barnes, also known as Sasquatch McGraw, was brought in with designs to be a star for CWI -- but he also has been in increasing demand for other companies that work the same day as a lot of CWI shows, so he hasn’t been able to be as pushed as he would. This match with Nate DeMarcus is technically a rematch from Nate’s original build to the championship. This was a really good match. Barnes is big and powerful and ultra physical and he pummeled Nate and allowed Nate to be in jeopardy. He allowed Nate to sell and showcase more of his abilities. Barnes dominated most of the match, but Nate made the big comeback -- that included his Gorilla Press Slam and the big Snap Tackle for Nate to get the W.

In an exceptional match, Nate DeMarcus defeated Bear Barnes in 13:59 by pinfall with a Snap Tackle.

DeMarcus, “Funky Fedora. This thing between you and I is coming to a head. You prance around here like you’re the top dog, like you belong at the top of the mountain, but you ain’t. You ain’t the top of the mountain. You’re a pretender. A pretender to my spot. You’re carryin’ my belt. You’re in my spot and I’m coming back for it. Next month, Funky, we’re going to solve this thing. Me and you. Steel cage. Mid American Championship. No running. No hiding. No outside interference. Nothing to save you from this ass-whoopin’ you’re going to get. It’s time for you to take a trip behind the woodshed.”

DeMarcus tossed the microphone out to Taylor Gordy and marched out of the ring.

The Texas Express versus American Gold

For months, this has been building and tonight, it came to a head. These two teams went at it like four men who really don’t like each other. It was physical and salty. There was a little extra mustard on each strike and both teams were clearly motivated. Chamberlain, in particular, looked like a star in the making. He was really in the zone in this match, really on top of his game. Chamberlain and English isolated Turk. They really worked him over -- they had a mean streak that they have clearly been waiting to unleash. They hit him with a back suplex and a neckbreaker combo. They hit an assisted Slingshot Legdrop. They cheated -- behind the referee’s back of course -- which really drove the crowd wild. Rules, man, they matter. Cooper Christie was going crazy on the side and when Turk finally made the hot tag by leapfrogging over English and diving forward, the crowd exploded as the big handsome Cooper Christie came in with fire and passion. He blasted each member of American Gold with heavy punches and kicks and forearms and elbows and then some real huge hip tosses and even big dropkicks for each of his opponents. Christie was really fired up -- up until Marcus English took a cheap shot chop-block when he was the illegal man which allowed Chamberlain to roll him up and grab a handful of tights to keep the leverage and American Gold stole won.

In an exceptional match, American Gold defeated The Texas Express in 22:26 when Maliek Chamberlain pinned Cooper Christie with a handful of tights.

Maliek Chamberlain carried the match in terms of in-ring performance.

Mr. Grappling versus Crockett Tubbs

The main event of the evening was the finals of the first Conner Threepwood Memorial Cup tournament. Both men were former partners of Threepwood. One was a contemporary who won championships with him, the other his protege. The two men engaged in a very good grappling contest. Everything was crisp and solid and despite Tubbs’ stamina and conditioning not being what it once was, the former NYCW grappler was able to hold his own with the younger Grappling. Mr. Grappling was able to take over though after about eight or nine minutes of wrestling -- and it became all him. He hit Tubbs with several suplexes that he immediately followed up with submission holds. Tubbs was able to fight out of each hold until Grappling was able to target the knee with several moves and lock in the Figure Four Leglock to force the submission and get the W.

In an exceptional match, Mr. Grappling defeated Crockett Tubbs in 13:14 by submission. Mr. Grappling wins the Conner Threepwood Memorial Cup.

I looked around the conference table at the cadre of people with me. Mark Hyatt, Andrew Gibson, Rick Sanders, Grace Harper. My brain trust. The collective I relied on to help make this whole engine work. Mark and Andrew were young talents that I was bringing along with me. Mark, the second coming of Shane Sneer. He was glib and intelligent. A devoted student of wrestling who wanted to be the best commentator or manager or whatever he was asked to do. Andrew, a military veteran with an understanding of logistics and budgets and a knack for schedules and managing events. Rick, my lead agent. Rick and I had known each other for years -- from before our joint three-years in NYCW together. Before he had gone to SCCW, actually. When he and Johnny Martin were the Ace Express and were poised to be the next big team in wrestling -- we had been friends. Between the two of us, we had sixty-five years of experience in the business. Grace Harper -- my significant other and another thirty-year pro who really added to the mix. She and Rick were the lead agents for their respective divisions -- Mauler and Chee were still here, but I wasn’t sure I’d keep the two of them past the summer. I like William and Steffi, but I didn’t need four agents. Harper was a better agent than Chee -- she was a better commentator. I was actually thinking of phasing her into commentary fulltime and trying a three-man booth. That would allow Mark to maybe manage some people again.</p><p> </p><p>

I looked around the table. “So? What news do we have?”</p><p> </p><p>

We were coming off the Conner Threepwood Memorial show. It had been a good show. We were consistently drawing over 100 people now. Mr. Grappling had gone over clean in the center of the ring. We were set up nicely for the fourth-annual Circle City Classic. I was excited about the direction we were headed -- but my team needed to keep me filled in.</p><p> </p><p>

Andrew Gibson adjusted his glasses and looked at me. “Well, Grimm SoCal Wrestling has been reclassified by the Pro Wrestling Reporter as medium. They’ve really seen a sharp uptake in their income and their popularity. As has Coastal Zone Combat Wrestling. They join ACPW, NYCW, MAW, QAW, EMLL, and OLLIE as companies with a medium classification.”</p><p> </p><p>

I sighed. All of these companies rising should have been a good thing. The pro wrestling business was really on fire -- but it wasn’t good. More companies rising meant more possibilities for talent poaching. We were safe from NYCW, MAW, QAW, OLLIE, ACPW, and CZCW because of the COTT. They wouldn’t directly come for any of our talent outright -- but GSW rising could be bad for business. We were already hurt by so many COTT companies having weekly TV.</p><p> </p><p>

I realized Andrew wasn’t done talking. “... and I don’t think they’re going to stop there.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Wait.” I said. “Can you back up?”</p><p> </p><p>

Andrew looked at me and blinked. “I was just saying that they just agreed to exclusive terms with Barnes. He’s going to be gone before Circle City Classic.”</p><p> </p><p>

I had figured that was coming. He was 6’11”. He could work. The big man was bound to be in demand.</p><p> </p><p>

“Plus.” Andrew continued. “I have it on good authority there are some other talents of ours they’re going to reach out to to help bolster their roster.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Like who?” The gravely voice of Rick Sanders chirped in.</p><p> </p><p>

Andrew, “Well. I’ve heard Virgil is high on their list.”</p><p> </p><p>

Shit. That stopped me dead in my tracks.</p><p> </p><p>

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” I added. “He can’t take the deal.”</p><p> </p><p>

“They haven’t offered it to him yet.” Andrew said with his hands flat on the table. “I just wouldn’t count on him being here past Circle City Classic.”</p><p> </p><p>

That was definitely going to change things. “Plus, we’re not going to get Stardust or Parker again.”</p><p> </p><p>

“And why the hell not?” I could feel the blood rising in my face. Grace looked at me, trying to gt me to calm down. Andrew looked sad that he had to be the one to tell me this news. I knew it wasn’t his fault -- but I was just told that The Hangman, one of my top stars, a guy I built, was probably leaving me and now two guys I had brought in to build around -- to draw more asses into the seats -- weren’t going to be around.</p><p> </p><p>

Mark Hyatt finally spoke. “OLLIE and PSW. EILL started coming for Jefferson and OLLIE stepped in and signed him to an exclusive deal. PSW runs TV when we run shows. They just signed Parker. While he’s not exclusive -- between their TV show and their big events all being on the same week as ours, he’s not going to be available.”</p><p> </p><p>

I gripped the water bottle in front of me and then threw it across the room. It hit the wall with a loud thud and fell to the ground with the cap off of it. Water leaked out of it onto the cold concrete floor. “Shit.” I said louder than I should have.</p><p> </p><p>

Andrew looked at me concerned and held a hand up. “It’s no big deal. They weren’t factored in to anything. They only made the one appearance.”</p><p> </p><p>

“No big deal?” I asked and Grace looked at me.</p><p> </p><p>

“Marv. Don’t.” She said, but I ignored her. I shouldn’t have ignored her.</p><p> </p><p>

“It is a big f*****g deal.” I swore at him. “You know why it’s a big deal?” I asked as I looked around the table and found what I was looking for. A poster from our last show. “Because of these.” I gestured to the poster. “You can put them on the poster and draw f*****g tickets. They have name identity. They’ve been on national TV. When we put these up in Half Priced Books or City Barbecue or Comic Book University or where-the-f**k-ever, casual people walk by and see them and go “Oh hey, I know those people. I’ve seen them. Parker was on SWF TV for eight years. EIGHT YEARS. Jefferson for ELEVEN. Jefferson had two SWF Tag Title reigns. People knew who the f**k they are and you bring guys like that in, you push them, you use them, so people who weren’t showing up to your shows before might show the f*** up.”</p><p> </p><p>

Spittle dripped from my mouth. I was hot. Not half hot. Full hot. My face was probably bright red. Andrew looked away. Grace and Rick and Mark looked at me confused. They had never seen me angry like this, but damn it, I was angry. For four years, I’d been trying to build this company. For four years, I’d been trying to carve out a place for this company in a virgin territory. Every time we were building momentum, something threw a wrench in it. The economy tanked. The wrestling business tanked. We fought through it. We capitalized on the failing industry and economy and got guys like Funky and the Express and American Gold and all of that -- but we kept getting screwed. Even the COTT was screwing us a bit. ACPW, CWWF, CZCW, CILL, IPW, MAW, NYCW, OLLIE, and QAW all had weekly TV shows. That’s nine companies that all produce weekly TV -- that I’m supposed to be affiliated with. It shouldn’t seem like a big deal -- except when they use my talent on their shows. Sure, sometimes it helps me out like with Bred for Battle. It gets them more exposure -- but other times it screws me. Like when 90% of my women aren’t with me because they’re booked somewhere else. CWWF started running their TVs on Wednesday when I have my Ladies Night shows -- so I’m probably going to have to move those in the future since a lot of my women also work there now. I had been wanting to do Funky Fedora against the World Champion -- who was now Josh Jacobs -- but I couldn’t get a damn date on him. At every turn it seemed like I was getting the short end of the stick and now two guys who I was hoping I could use to elevate us into more conversations were gone and I was probably going to lose The Hangman and who knows who else and I had just had it.</p><p> </p><p>

“The meeting’s over.” I said and I stood up. Rick looked up at me. Rick could break me in half. He had hands like boulders. He was a grizzled pro and was always in my corner but right now he looked at me concerned.</p><p> </p><p>

“We haven’t gotten through the plans for May.” He said to me. Trying to rationalize with me. Trying to calm me down but I couldn’t do it. Not right now. I walked out of the room and back through the office space to the stairs up to my apartment. I climbed them in silence. I shut the door to my apartment in silence. I poured myself a double shot of Crown and downed it and then poured myself another double shot and downed that one. I gripped the faux-marble of the kitchen counter and stared at the window overlooking Fountain Square. </p><p> </p><p>

“Don’t you see what I’m trying to do here?” I asked to no one in particular. Or to a higher power that I wasn’t sure I believed in. “This is my life’s work.” I muttered. “This is what I want to be remembered for and you keep cutting my nuts off.” </p><p> </p><p>

The last year had been tough. We had professional successes -- but we continued to lose talent. And then Conner died and it had been a year but I wasn’t sure I was over it and I wasn’t sure I’d ever be over it and I felt like a man living in someone else’s skin and the one thing I loved, that I truly loved -- professional wrestling, continued to drive me crazy. Had I not given enough to pro wrestling? Had I not sacrificed relationships and other careers for this business? Had I not been a faithful lover? Maybe that was the curse of the addict -- to chase the thing that destroys you. Maybe pro wrestling would destroy me.</p><p> </p><p>

What did that singer say? The one from Oklahoma whose voice had too much pain in it? Something like, ‘I guess I’ve got a taste for poison, I’ve given up on ever being well?’ Something like that. This was my poison. Maybe I wouldn’t ever be well.</p><p> </p><p>

“You okay?” Her honey-dipped voice cut through the silence and my thoughts like a knife through butter. I couldn’t turn to face her. I was embarrassed. Embarrassed at my outburst. Embarrassed that I was damn near fifty and was this emotional over guys getting better-paying jobs.</p><p> </p><p>

I could hear her stepping closer. I could feel her body behind mine. I could smell her. The soft scent of lilacs. I closed my eyes as she wrapped her arms around me. We were just about the same height so her cheek could press into my neck. “I know it sucks.” She sympathized, “But it’s going to be okay. It’s the nature of the business. Guys leave. You restock the talent pool. You regroup.”</p><p> </p><p>

I nodded and exhaled. “I know. It’s not them leaving.” I finally admitted. “It’s just… It’s hard.” I said. “All of it. It’s hard. We’re not where I want to be. We’re not where I expected to be. How the hell does GSW get to offer exclusive deals? With that shit-show product. That violence and gore and… It’s just not right. We’re doing things the right way. We respect the business. We respect the talent. We tell stories. We build. We have drama and passion. We don’t ask our guys to kill themselves and we’re just barely hanging on. I wanted to be so much more than this. I figured by four years in, we would have really climbed higher.”</p><p> </p><p>

She released me and stepped back to press against the other counter. “That’s how it goes sometimes. It takes time. Sometimes it happens quickly. Sometimes it doesn’t. We’re hanging on. CWT couldn’t hang on. UCW couldn’t hang on. Neither could FCW and L-Ring looks like it’s about to close too. Hell, SAISHO and that Wigan company couldn’t hang on either. And that’s just in the last four years. This is a fickle business. You know that. How many startup companies did you work for before NYCW and MAW?”</p><p> </p><p>

“Too f****g many.” I replied without looking at her. I sill wasn’t ready.</p><p> </p><p>

“And how many made it?”</p><p> </p><p>

“None.”</p><p> </p><p>

“Exactly. How many companies don’t get four years or four months or four weeks? How many get one show and that’s it? You’ll crack a hundred shows this year. A hundred. You’re doing something to be proud of.” She said and I nodded and finally turned to face her finally. I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair. She was right after all.</p><p> </p><p>

“You’re right.” I said and she smiled.</p><p> </p><p>

“Of course I’m right. I’m always right. Now you need to apologize to Andrew for yelling at him in front of everyone.”</p><p> </p><p>

“I know.”</p><p> </p><p>

I hated apologizing, but Andrew was a good kid and he deserved one. Better get it over with.</p>

Good opening match, Lucinda shows she can be useful for the group helping them to the win. I think she has a lot of potential, I really like her as a talent. Wild Red again stands out without even being mentioned competing. He was the only one being saved for the beefy brawl with Juggernaut.

I’m pleased with the Evolution of the Women’s Division in CWI. From one match a show usually with Steph Blake or Felicia Luck to now having their own live shows and multiple matches and two titles. Love the mention of Sky adopting the Powerbomb instead of clinging to the Chokeslam everyone else does. She continues to build herself up, this is a case of the title helping the performer more than the performer helping the title.

I like that Acid made a return here to honor his protégé and that Tubbs made it being Connor's partner from the past. Both aren’t the wrestlers they used to be, but this was more about the sentiment than the in ring action.

I appreciate the subtle behind the scene comments at the beginning of the matches you do. Here we got it with Bear Barnes talking about how you were gonna push him but he’s too busy to get pushed basically. Bear was basically used as a place holder here to hold the Fedora v DeMarcus rematch off till Circle City Classic IV. Now, these two come to ahead in the Main Event of the biggest show in the CWI calendar year. I’m so glad we’re getting the old-school blow off in a Cage. Fedora will have nowhere to go and we’ll see who really deserves to be champion.

“Rules man, they matter” if only modern wrestling agreed. American Gold continues to make Texas Express’ life hell with a cheap win here. Gold went from number one babyfaces to number one heels without even holding the belts. I could see these two teams being arch enemies for a long time.

Mr. Grappling took the Conner Threepwood trophy and in a show of things to come possibly he was celebrating at the end of the show in one of the best segments. Grappling being homegrown to Indiana could make him a big name for the future of the company. Especially the fact he’s had one of the greatest feuds of CWI with Zippy Deverell.

Evolving is an important part of life, recognizing when to leave your comfort zone and trying something new. Abandoning traditions we wish would stick around but are falling by the waist side. Is COTT beneficial or detrimental? That’s the question, is it better to be solo or have a group by your side, even if that group makes it hard to do business. I think it’d be harder without the COTT. Your roster would be prime picking for more than just GSW and EILL. The whole COTT would be at your door waiting to take talent. So I think sticking around in the COTT is more important than ever now.
