Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis returns to the Fountain Square Theatre on the third Saturday of April for the second annual Conner Threepwood Memorial. Last year, CWI began a new tradition by celebrating the life of former two-time Mid American Champion, the man who put Indianapolis wrestling on the map, Conner Threepwood. Last year, a special one night, four-man tournament was held to crown the first ever Conner Threepwood Memorial Cup Winner. On that night, Mr. Grappling stood tall and won the Cup in honor of his former Tag Team Partner. This year, four new entrants enter the gruelling one night, submission-only tournament. All four men in the tournament this year represent the Confederation of the Territories and all four men have agreed to abide by tournament rules. There are no pinfalls, any disqualification will result in an immediate fine and suspension by the COTT.

The wrestlers competing in the tournament this year are:

6DAVDv1.jpg

Storm Spillane. The 32-year-old currently works exclusively for CZCW. The impactful wrestler has had success in the United States, Mexico, and Japan as a wrestler. He's primarily known for his long-running team with childhood friend Marvel Malloy, but recently Spillane has been venturing into singles competition. Spillane is a very talented technician who is known for his high-impact style of hard strikes, big suplexes, and joint-wrenching holds.

GmieeOr.jpg

Marvel Malloy. The 32-year-old Malloy currently works exclusively for OLLIE where he is the reigning Campeonato de Mexico. Malloy is most known for his long running team, the American Cobras, with Storm Spillane. As a team, they won nine sets of tag team titles -- including three reigns as COTT World Tag Team Champions. They were also the 2017 winners of the Sam Keith Classic. They have not teamed in several years, as Malloy has been working exclusively in Mexico and Spillane exclusively for CZCW. The two friends have never wrestled against each other professionally. Like his former partner, Malloy is known for his high-impact style of strikes, suplex, and joint-wrenching holds.

OVPHaza.jpg

Luis Torres. The 25-year-old Torress is representing CWI in this tournament. While he has not achieved a lot of success, the young man from Mexico is a sensational technician, widely regarded as one of the best up-and-coming submission wrestlers on the planet. With only two years as a professional, this tournament could be the break out moment he needs to launch his career to the next level.

H2hudwe.jpg

"The Indiana Dragon" Reggie Combs is a young man that surprises a lot of people. He calls himself Conner Threepwood's biggest fan -- in fact, like Threepwood, Combs is a graduate of Shortridge High School in Indianapolis (Go Blue Devils) and this is an opportunity for him to feel like he's making his hero proud. He turned pro one year ago this month after being inspired to be a wrestler by the passing of Threepwood. Before becoming a wrestler, Combs was frequently seen at CWI matches and the young man is looking to catapult himself to big match opportunities with an upset in the tournament.

In addition to the three tournament matches, the Conner Threepwood Memorial Cup will see the Dynamite Express put the CWI Tag Team Titles on the line against The Dog Soldiers. The Dog Soldiers, fresh off of winning March Madness, did not want to wait until Circle City Classic V to get the shot they earned by winning the tournament and the Express agreed to a meeting here.

The main event of the evening, for the first time ever, is a champion versus champion, title versus title match up. CWI Women's Champion Ashley Keith against CWI All Action Champion Yvonne Ericks. In February, Yvonne Ericks pinned Ashley Keith in an eight-woman tag and now Ashley Keith has vowed to win both belts and retire the All Action Championship. One woman will make history and leave with both titles. Will it be Ashley Keith? Will it be Yvonne Ericks? The only way to find out is to be there live.

Prediction:

Yvonne Ericks def. Ashley Keith to win the CWI Women's Championship & retain the CWI All Action Championship

I can't see you retiring the All Action Championship and with Yvonne pinning Ashley, I think Yvonne is about to claim the women's championship.

Marvel Malloy def. Storm Spillane

Malloy sounds like the more successful of the American Cobras, so I'm going with him to win the tournament.

The Dynamite Express def. The Dog Soldiers

Dynamite Express only recently won the titles off Dog Soldiers, so I can't see them losing them back this quick.

Marvel Mallory def. Luis Torres

While Luis is one of your own, I have the feeling with him being so young and Mallory being around the peak of his career, Torres will take the loss.

Storm Spillane def. "The Indiana Dragon" Reggie Combs

As cool as it would be for Reggie to win (and he likely is a future winner), I'm not picking him for the same reason as the last match. Plus the old tag partners facing off is a cool story.

The Ring Generals def. The Texas Express

Not too sure here, but since Ring Generals are aligned with the champion, I'll pick them.

"Dapper" Danny Drapper def. Nebo Martell to retain the Indiana Heavyweight Title

I'm never confident with these title matches, but I think Dapper Danny retains.

If this is indeed going to be the finals, this will be a great finals. I love the thought of two former partners who have never met in the ring fighting here for the first time. I have to go with Spillane because heck, I don't know. He chose to stay in America, sounds like as good of a reason as any.

The bell rang and 150 paying customers in the Fountain Square Theatre coupled with another couple dozen guests of exploded with cheers. They had just witnessed history tonight. Yvonne Ericks became the first double champion in Championship Wrestling from Indianapolis history. She also ended Ashley Keith’s reign as Women’s Champion. Yvonne stood in the center of the ring. Referee Kessie Lee Walker -- the official for all Women’s Division matches, handed her both championships. Yvonne looked at them. It wasn’t that long ago she sat in Marvin Earnest’s office and demanded something more. She wanted a push. She wanted so much more and tonight -- in front of the biggest crowd in CWI history, she got to make history. She gripped both belts and lifted them into the air -- high into the air -- and the spotlight was on her. They had dimmed the ring lights so that the spotlight was the only source of light. This was her moment. Ashley Keith had already powdered out of the ring and was using the cover of darkness to make her way to the back. Yvonne lowered both belts to her shoulders and then tossed them towards the ropes so she could roll out of the ring and pick them back up. She walked past fans with outstretched hands and she let them slap her shoulders. The narrow aisle led to the stage and she climbed onto the stage. She raised both belts back into the air and the crowd was all standing. A standing ovation. She swallowed hard and turned and pushed the curtain aside so she could step backstage.

V9qNagr.jpg

Zippy was there and he threw his arms around her. The curtain had only barely closed and he was there. He pressed his mouth to her ear and whispered, “I’m so proud of you.”

She didn’t say anything, she just rested her head against his. She was tired. She had just worked twenty frenetic minutes with Ashley Keith. Twenty minutes in the main event spot of the Conner Threepwood Memorial. She had just been in the main event of a real show and won. “I did it, babe.” She whispered. The words were for just them. This wasn’t a major league operation. There weren’t banks of monitors and production crew scurrying around. There wasn’t a bunch of people standing around to congratulate her. It was just Zippy and truthfully that is all that she needed. Zippy had supported her since they started dating. He had been her biggest cheerleader. He had reminded her that her time was coming and it did come -- she won the All Action Championship a few months ago. Now she held both titles. They had trusted her to be a double champion. It was a great moment for her and there was no one she’d rather share it with.

snF1S53.jpg

“Good job, kid.” The voice of Grace Harper came as she rounded the corner. “You’re the face of our division now.” Grace had agented the match. She had helped them come up with the finish -- which saw Yvonne power out of the Proton Lock, get back to her feet, and hit a Mafia Kick for the win. Grace knew that breaking the Proton Lock would be a big moment and it was. It had popped the crowd -- no one else had ever powered out of the move before and Ashley had been gracious enough to let her do it. Ashley was on her way out -- this was her last day in Indianapolis before reporting to Texas full time for Farrah and she had made Yvonne look like a star in her last match. Ashley was a real pro and proved it tonight.

“Thanks Grace.” Yvonne replied, pulling away from Zippy. She set the titles down on the sole table by the entry way. It was a staging table for people and typically was where whoever was the agent for the match in the ring to sit and watch the match and take notes to give feedback. “I hope I made you proud.” Yvonne added as she stuck her hand out. Grace took it and shook her hand.

“You did good. Just don’t let the foot off the gas now. You can’t afford to.” Grace said before releasing her hand. “Y’all have a good night.” And just like that Grace was gone to change out of her show-time pants suit into clothes she could help clean up in. Grace wasn’t too proud to help clean up.

Zippy leaned in and kissed Yvonne on the cheek. “I’m so proud of you.” He said as he lifted one of Yvonne’s belts and she grabbed the other and they walked down the hallway away from the entry way. They walked in silence, not uncomfortable silence -- the silence that comes from needing to say nothing. Zippy stopped moving at the outside of the women’s locker room. He handed her the belt. “Go get changed babe. We’re going to celebrate tonight.”

“I can’t wait.” She said as she pushed open the door to the locker room. It was empty except for Ashley Keith. Keith had already changed.

qG46qME.jpg

“Thanks for the match.” Yvonne said as she walked in and set both of the belts down. Ashley looked up from her bag.

“It was my pleasure.” She said. Ashley wasn’t the most friendly person in the world. She wasn’t rude -- she was hyper professional. She kept to herself. She was affable without being gregarious.

“You’re going to be missed.” Yvonne said and it was true. Ashley had really been a standard-bearer in their locker room and in the last year, but especially the last six months or so, the women’s locker room was decimiated by signings. All of the top talents were gone and Ashley was only the latest to chase money -- in her case it was 87,600 a year for the next two years. It wasn’t USPW or CWA money, but Ashley was only 24 and when her contract was up she’d have just turned 26. Baring injuries, Ashley was going to be able to make a boatload of cash.

Ashley only smiled back. A polite smile but not one that invited more conversation. “Who knows, Marv may bring me back in from time to time. I’m still working for the Confederation.” Ashley added to be polite and Yvonne just smiled and nodded back. They had never been close but they didn’t have to be. You didn’t have to be close to make money and tonight they had made money.

Yvonne sat in her chair and reached into her bag to start cleaning herself up. She didn’t want to keep Zippy waiting too long. Ashley stood up and grabbed her back. She crossed the room. “I’ll see you down the road.” Ashley said and then she was gone. No handshake. No emotional moment. Just a perfunctory goodbye and now Yvonne was left alone in the locker room. She just sat there for a long moment. This was her division now, that’s what Marv had said to her. She had both belts. She was going to defend both belts. She was going to have a chance to elevate her career by showing she could work double duty. She was going to be the face of the division, to work all the shows. Marv had told her that her push was coming and he made good on his word and now she had to make sure he didn’t regret it.

“I appreciate all that you did for us...for me.” I said as I shook Ace’s hand. I had known Ace since 2008 when he came into Mid Atlantic Wrestling. We had immediately taken to each other. Ace was a tag team specialist. He was creative -- always trying to come up with new spots and he had been a good member of the MAW roster for the seven years he was there. He and Max Mayhem had been a good team -- thrice winning the MAW Tag Belts and then Max left and Ace won them once more Bradley before he had hit the road. He was the second guy I called when setting up CWI -- Conner had been the first. I knew I needed Ace on my roster. He was a veteran. A good babyface who could work and would understand his role. He had been instrumental in working with Wild Red Stallion and helping get the big man ready for where he was at. He had led the Dog Soldiers. He had been rewarded with two reigns with the COTT World Six Man belts and I had been able to get him and Roger the Tag Titles and the final thank you -- March Madness. It was his reward. He had earned it.

“Thank you for believing in me, Marv.” He said before releasing my hand. This was a bitter sweet moment for me. I was happy for Ace. Larry and Steve had offered him a two year deal for 6,000 a month. He was going to make 72,000 a year for the next two years and he had earned it. He was 39 years old and had never made big money in wrestling. He’d never been in a big league company and while NYCW wasn’t big league, the cash they were making from WrestleWorld and their live events and sponsors meant they were offering exclusive deals and they had wanted Ace. I didn’t want to lose him, but I couldn’t match that money and Ace deserved that money. I wasn’t happy that Larry didn’t seem to care that he was taking one of my top talents, but I would bide my time with that. We were the little guys in the COTT and I had to swallow that pill.

“You’ve earned it.” I told him. “You really have.” And I meant that. It hurt to lose him but he was getting an opportunity and he deserved a good opportunity. He deserved a quality chance and that’s what he was getting. Tonight was his last night with us.

Ace looked around my office. We were across the street from the Theatre. The show had been a success and Ace and Roger had done the favors for the Dynamite Express a month earlier than I would have liked, but I wanted to accommodate his schedule with NYCW and when he told them he’d start full time. Ace was going to take the fall but at the last minute Roger had decided he wanted to. He wanted Ace to not get pinned. He wanted Ace to go out strong in the fans eyes and I’m sure Ace appreciated that.

“Just promise me.” Ace said as he looked right at me. “When I’m done in NYCW, if I still want to wrestle, you give me a job again. Let me come back.”

I nodded my head. “If you’re still wrestling and we’re still in business, of course I’ll give you another job. You’ve always got a gig with me Ace.”

He nodded and he shook my hand once more. “Thank you Marv.”

I didn’t say anything. I didn’t need to. Ace was done and he was out the door and I stood there for a long moment. This one hurt on a personal level. “I’m going to miss you.” I muttered into the empty room. I couldn’t say that to Ace, but it was true. I was going to miss him. F*ck Larry Vessey and Steve Flash.

Yvonne is the new Ace! I thought for sure she would've been gone ages ago, but here she is! The Cup final was an excellent match too. Wouldn't expect anything different.

I'll miss Ace. He's been the unsung hero for you since the beginning. Honestly I'm shocked to see him get an exclusive deal but he definitely deserves one.

Really cool to see Yvonne reach the top, didn't realise Ace would be leaving though. Made me realise how few of your original guys you've actually got left. I just checked, Talia Neema is the only woman left from your first show, while only 7 of the original 20 men remain (Bred for Battle, Patterson, DeMarcus, Monteiro, Stallion & Deverell)

It took a while for Yvonne to get there -- but she did! I'm glad she did. I really like her being there, to be honest. It's a really good spot for her -- MHero actually came up with the double champ concept so I have to give the credit to him.

I'm really going to miss Ace. He was one of my favorite characters to book. I planned on having him for the rest of his career.

That Porkchop Patterson defeated Robin Leroy match getting a zero is highly impressive. I know people strive to get a 100 match rating but to me zero is far more impressive. I mean how bad could that match possibly be?

I think I got a zero once in a match involving Taylor Kidd. I was so happy when that happened.
