No Ordinary Men [CVerse]

Recommended Posts

Really enjoyed the show. Really enjoyed Zippy getting his moment beating Champion -- he seems to be "Mr. HPW". He's probably the "main attraction" for most viewers: Zippy's involved in most storylines, and while he isn't holding the belt as much, he doesn't need to. Really enjoyed the Fedora segment -- I've never liked Flair's character, but his promo on Fili really worked for me.

Garcia can really work a match -- don't know if "being squashed on TV" really would be the best path for him. If he's anything like his relative, Edwin probably would get over as a manager. Personally, I think "Bred for Battle" would be perfect, though it means shifting Gibson somewhere else.

I'd move Gibson backward -- let him rub off pop on an up-and-coming team -- only to move back into the spotlight when they win the titles.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm glad you like Zippy -- he's been my favorite character to develop throughout this diary. I feel like I've really established him and made him something.

I liked the Fedora promo too! I'm a sucker for Flair and I've tried to make Fedora Memphis-esque Flair. Sometimes it succeeds more than others, but I'm glad this promo resonated.

Garcia was brought in on a one night only deal because he relocated to the Great Lakes so I hired him to try him out. He'll pop back up sometimes, we'll see if he gets a full-time role.

Yvonne. :(

She had to lose at some point, she held ALL THREE titles!

Really sad to see Yvonne lose one of her titles honestly. While Neema definitely deserves the chance to prove herself, I'd just have liked to see the triple champ thing go on for more than a brief moment.</p>

Earnest, “Hello and welcome to another exciting, thrillpacked episode of Wrestling Spotlight as presented by Heartland Pro Wrestling in association with the Confederation of the Territories and here live and on demand on WrestleWorld! I am Marvin Earnest and I’m joined at the broadcast position by my colleague, the inimitable Grace Harper. Grace, how are you tonight?”

Harper, ”Oh I’m excited to be here for what promises to be another great night of professional wrestling action in the Heartland of America at Center Stage at Studio 65 in beautiful Indianapolis, Indiana.”

Earnest, “And it should definitely be a great night. In our main event tonight, the Mayor of Muscle Mountain, the Baron of Buff Beach himself, Sandman Winks will be in action against the diabolical Masked Mauler.”

Harper, ”That should be a great contest between two fantastic competitors -- but let’s not forget that The Texas Express, Nate DeMarcus & Warwick Good are in action in two different tag team matches. It’s a jam packed card.”

Earnest, “Yes it is but before we get to any in ring action. Our broadcast colleague Taylor Gordy is standing by with The Dynamite Express. Taylor, take it away.”

05TFh3q.png

TiIkT9w.jpgK9PRsaA.jpgkGwolZw.jpg

Gordy, “Thank you Marv. I’m here with the Heartland Pro Wrestling Tag Team Champions, The Dynamite Express. Syd, Cam, thanks for being here tonight. At Railroad City Rumble, you managed to steal a victory from the Texas Express to retain your Tag Team Titles -- and they’ve made it clear on social media that they want another opportunity at the Tag Team Titles.”

Collier, “Of course they do. They’re sore losers. They can’t handle losing. When they lost the World Tag Titles to the Ring Generals and they immediately complained that they were cheated out of the titles. They lose to us and immediately complain. They’re complainers. They can’t handle losing.”

Jones, “They can’t. And they need to. We’re the Tag Team Champs. Us. Not them. We’re the best team in wrestling, not them. We’ve won everywhere we’ve gone. We’ve been the top guys everywhere we’ve gone and we’re the top guys here. We ARE what is happening in pro wrestling. And if they want to get back in the ring with us..”

Collier, “They’re going to have to get in line and win some matches -- because in two weeks we’ve got a tag title defense against a great team. Kanikoshi and Tana the Mighty. The Brothers Samoa are coming here to Heartland Pro Wrestling because they want these.”

Collier slaps his Tag Team Title as Cam speaks up.

Jones, “And they’re going to leave without them because we’re the best thing going and Coop. Turk. If you want another chance at these you better win tonight. You better win some matches and you better hope that the Confederation of the Territories and Heartland Pro Wrestling matchmaking committees think you deserve another shot.”

Syd and Cam walk off and Taylor stands there.

Gordy, “Strong words from the Tag Champs and it looks like we’re going to have a great main event in two weeks. Back to you Marv and Grace.”

Earnest, “What a blockbuster match for two weeks from now. The HPW Tag Team Titles will be on the line and I can’t wait.”

Harper, ”I can’t either -- and I can’t wait for our opening match tonight. Two great young tag teams going at it.”

Earnest, “That’s right, Grace. Roughhouse Riders -- the team of Victor Crash and Jimmy Dillon, will be going head to head with the Manifesto. What can you tell us about these two teams?”

Harper, “Victor and Jimmy are both products of the No Ordinary Men Academy of Pro Wrestling here in Indianapolis. They are both big, strong athletes with a lot of potential. Victor is the more experienced of the two, he’s closing in on finishing his second full year as a pro while Jimmy is closing in on a year. Jamar Lennon and Bobby Marks -- the Manifesto -- are former teammates for the University of Texas. They are incredibly athletic and both are big, strong guys and this is going to be four big bulls locking horns and it could go in any direction. If I had to give the edge to a team, it would be to the Manifesto just from an experience standpoint.”

Earnest, “That’s great analysis. Let’s go to the ring for our opening match.”

Roughhouse Riders [Crash & Dillon] versus The Manifesto

The opening match was exactly what Grace Harper said it might be -- four bulls locking horns. Crash and Dillon -- now dubbed Roughhouse Riders look like they could be pencilled in to start getting a push but the Manifesto have been carefully protected since joining HPW -- with only really losing in the last March Madness tournament. Both teams were all power offense and worked a fast pace for guys their size. Crash hit a Top Rope Clothesline that showed off of his agility and he and Dillon hit Marks -- the bigger of the two members of the Manifesto -- with a double shoulder tackle that was really nice. Jamar Lennon hit a Frankensteiner that got a huge pop for a guy his size (he is a heavyweight) to jump from a standing position and bring an opponent right over with just his legs. Bobby Marks came off the second rope with a shoulder tackle that turned Victor Crash inside out and then they hit him with The Credential, their Doomsday Top Rope Bulldog (think the move the Steiners used to use) that sent Victor Crash down into the mat with so much force. Lennon made the cover the Manifesto got the win to start off the show.

In a terrible match, The Manifesto defeated Roughhouse Riders in 5:45 when Jamar Lennon pinned Victor Crash with The Credential.

Earnest, “A big win for The Manifesto who keep winning and gaining momentum.”

Harper, “I’m sure we’re going to see them challenge for the Tag Team Titles sooner or later.”

Earnest, “You could be right -- but up next Taylor Gordy is standing by with The Samoan Superman, Joey Fili.”

TiIkT9w.jpgnXhwMd6.jpg

Gordy, “Thank you Marv and you’re right, I’m here with Joey Fili. Joey, last week Funky Fedora said he had no intentions of facing you in the ring. He said you weren’t up to his level. How do you feel about that?”

Joey Fili takes a long moment before he responds. He lets the question hover there in the air and flips his long hair out of his face.

Fili, “An unproven commodity. That’s what he called me Taylor. He called me unproven. There’s a saying where I come from Taylor, you know what that is?”

Gordy, “No, what is it?”

Fili, “You don’t have to believe in the asskicking to get your ass kicked, you know what I mean? All the proof I need is right here.”

Fili holds up his right hand.

Gordy, “So you’re not bothered by him thinking you’re unproven?”

Fili, “Nah. If he wants to underestimate me, that’s fine. It’s his ass that will get kicked, it’s his championship I’ll take. ‘Cause unfortunately for him, he doesn’t make the matches. He just signs the contracts put in front of him and this match has already been made. It’ll be soon. Real soon. A couple of weeks. And then we’ll have a new champ and he’ll believe in me. Believe me.”

Joey walks off leaving Taylor standing there.

Gordy, “Strong words from a future title challenger. Back to you Marv and Grace.”

Earnest, “It looks like we are headed for a collision between Funky Fedora and Joey Fili.”

Harper, ”And I for one can’t wait for those two to lock up in the center of the ring. It should be an amazing contest.”

Earnest, “It should be. Up next we have Celestia Copeland, a young woman still trying to find her footing in the sport against the niece of one of the legends of Japanese pro wrestling, Akari Kawashima. What can you tell us about Kawashima going into this match?”

Harper, ”Well her uncle is Kozue Kawashima and she learned the sport under him and his partner PRIDE Koiso. She’s an incredibly talented wrestler who puts her emphasis on technical wrestling. She’s only 23 years old and already has five years in the sport. She could very well be a breakout star in the women’s division -- she just has to build some consistency in her performances and string some wins together.”

Earnest, “Well maybe she will start here.”

Celestia Copeland versus Akari Kawashima

Celestia Coepland was really outmatched by the arrogant Akari Kawashima. Kawashima almost looked to be insulted to be in the ring with Copeland and she spent the majority of the match taunting Copeland in between hitting her with a suplex and locking in a painful submission hold. After about three minutes of taunting, Kawashima hit the famed Kawashima Driver to score the pinfall victory.

In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Akari Kawashima defeated Celestia Copeland in 3:06 by pinfall with a Kawashima Driver.

05TFh3q.png

Earnest, “A convincing win for the young Akari Kawashima tonight.”

Harper, ”And she needed a win, Marv. Like any other sport, wrestling is built off confidence. The more you win, the more confident you get. For someone like Akari, getting a win on her Wrestling Spotlight debut will help her the next time out. It’s like a pitcher who gets a strikeout in baseball. You sit one batter down and all of a sudden you sit a second and then a third and you’re off to the races.”

Earnest, “A baseball analogy from Grace Harper, ladies and gentlemen. Up next, one half of the Women’s Tag Team Champions, Black Diamond is in action.”

Black Diamond versus Melinda Perry

Black Diamond came out to a big ovation. The crowd really likes her -- she’s been with HPW since March of 2020 and the fans have seen her grow right in front of their eyes. Melinda Perry had the clear size advantage sne she stormed out of the gate and hit Diamond with a running body splash -- where she literally just ran into Diamond. Perry lifted her up and hit her with a body slam and then an elbow drop and the crowd was shocked. Diamond kicked out of the pin attempt at one and got back to her feet. She blocked a bunch from Melinda and fired off one of her own, then a second, then a third -- the third punch backed Perry into the ropes and Diamond shot her off and caught her with the leg lariat. Perry took a big bump and stumbled back up and got shot off into the ropes again and when she came back, Diamond caught her with the Belly to Belly Suplex (Magnum TA style) to get the big win.

In an extremely short match, Black Diamond defeated Melinda Perry in 3:09 by pinfall with a Belly To Belly Suplex.

Earnest, “And Black Diamond just made short work of Melinda Perry.”

Harper, ”The way Melinda Perry came out of the gate, I thought for sure she was going to surprise us all, but Black Diamond showed us all why she’s a diamond in the rough with that convincing win.”

Earnest, “Let’s go to Taylor Gordy who is standing by with Andrew Gibson and Bred for Battle.”

TiIkT9w.jpgqYmW8S4.jpgh7OAb9p.jpg24CK4Wp.jpg

Gordy, “Andrew. Your two charges here, Dreadnought and James Diaz, have been challenged by the team that will be competing next -- Nate DeMarcus and Warwick Good. You have yet to respond. How do you respond?”

Gibson, “Fools and fanatics are so certain of themselves. These two men behind me aren’t ordinary men, Taylor. You can’t find these guys in a gym or a warehouse somewhere. These are men that were chosen by genetics to compete in this sport. Men who were chosen by genetics to go to battle. They were born for this. They were bred for this -- and you saw what they did to US Patriot. You saw the mangled mess they left him in. He’ll never wrestle again! If Nate DeMarcus and Warwick Good are so foolish as to think they WANT to get in the ring with these two -- after seeing what they do to people they’re in the ring with -- who am I to deny them? If a man chooses to play with a bear, it’s not the bear’s fault when the man gets mauled. Nate and Warwick have chosen their fate. We will just deliver it to them.”

Gibson and Bred for Battle walk off and Gordy looks over towards the announce desk.

Gordy, “Well there you have it. The challenge was accepted. Back to you Marv and Grace.”

In terms of in-ring work, Nate DeMarcus was head and shoulders above everyone else.

Taylor Gordy interviewed Yvonne Ericks about her loss last week to Talia Neema. Ericks was disappointed in herself -- she had been on such a roll -- but she’s not going to let herself start backsliding now. She’s still the Women’s Champion and still one half of the Women’s Tag Team Champions and she doesn’t want to let any of her fans down.

Right after Yvonne, Taylor Gordy interviewed the Texas Express who made it clear that they’re not resting until they get another shot at the HPW Tag Team Titles. The Dynamite Express are a great team, but they’re a team that had to rely on cheating to get the job done and the fans of HPW deserve better than cowards like the Dynamite Express.

A/N: While the end of the shoot peetered out and it wasn't a great show from a writing standpoint I wanted to get it up as it had been a week since I posted the card. I have been suffering from a bit of a creative block the last week or so and haven't been able to get a lot of writing mojo going [for anything, TEW and personal writing]. I blame the current state of the world and the season combining to just take some energy out of me. But onwards and upwards.

Earnest, “Hello everyone and welcome back to another exciting, thrillpacked installment of Wrestling Spotlight from right here at the Crossroads of America, Center Stage at Studio 65 in beautiful Indianapolis Indiana. I’m Marv Earnest and I’m joined in the broadcast position by the legendary grappler herself, Ms. Hell on Wheels, Grace Harper.”

Harper, “Thank you for that rousing introduction, Marv. It’s great to be back here for another great night of professional wrestling action.”

Earnest, “And it should absolutely be a great night. In our main event, Nicky Champion teams with his best friend Happy Elwood and his protegee Jimmy Chipolata to take on Deverell’s Army in a match that is sure to be wild and violent.

Harper, “I’m looking forward to that match a lot. For the past nine, almost ten months, Nicky Champion has been at war with Deverell’s Army. Will tonight be the night where it finally resolves?”

Earnest, “We will find out, but before that happens we have our first match of the night, pitting two young wrestlers who are both trying to break out from the pack. Nebo Martell and Porkchop Patterson!”

Nebo Martell versus Porkchop Patterson

The opening match between two youngsters left a lot to be desired. The two men did not mesh -- there was just something missing in the match that kept the two men from being able to settle into a rhythm or a normal match. Patterson is really green and he went for a body slam and it looked like he almost hurt Nebo Martell with it, but fortunately Martell was well enough to be able to lock in the Martell Lock and get the submission victory.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, Nebo Martell defeated Porkchop Patterson in 4:05 by submission with a Martell Lock.

Earnest, “A good win for Nebo Martell over a hungry youngster in Porkchop Patterson. He needed that win.”

Harper, “He certainly did, Marv. Every win matters and that was a big win.”

Earnest, “And it looks like Nebo is standing by with so post match comments. Taylor Gordy, take it away.”

TiIkT9w.jpgt1uvlRq.jpg

Gordy, “Thank you Marv. Nebo, what a great win.”

Martell, “Thank you Taylor. Man it feels good to get a big win here on Wrestling Spotlight. I’ve got to give all the respect in the world to Porkchop Patterson. He really brought it tonight.”

Gordy, “He certainly did. I do have to ask though -- what are your plans? What do you hope to accomplish here in the tail end of 2024?”

Martell, “I want to be Indiana Heavyweight Champion. I’ve come close to tasting championship success, but I haven’t gotten to. It’s my mission, before the year is out, to raise that Indiana Title above my head and I hope you all will support me on my journey to the belt! Thank you!”

Martell walks off all white-meat babyface smiles.

Gordy, “And there you have it. Nebo Martell wants to be Indiana Heavyweight Champion. Back to you Marv and Grace.”

Earnest, “I look forward to seeing Nebo step into the ring with Wild Red Stallion in the future. That should be a hell of a match.”

Harper, “It should be. Both are two young, bright talents. Wild Red Stallion is deep in his second reign as Indiana Heavyweight Champion and he’s not one to back down from a challenge and I’m sure, sooner than later, he will step into the ring with Nebo Martell and put the title on the line.”

Earnest, “Up next, we have a tag team match as the brothers from New York, Chuck and Tully Casey, step into the ring with Brent Carpenter and Tyrone Shearer.”

Harper, “This is a big opportunity for Carpenter and Shearer. The Casey Brothers are an established tag team. They’ve been teaming with each other for years and a win over them could instantly raise the stock of Carpenter and Shearer -- but they will have their work cut out for them because Chuck and Tully are tough men to get into the ring with. They’re big and strong and they know how to work together. It should be an interesting contest.”

The Casey Brothers versus Brent Carpenter & Tyrone Shearer

This tag match was a one sided affair. The Casey Brothers really controlled this match and spent some time getting to showcase their tag skill. It was designed to get the Brothers over and continue to establish the deep, robust tag division. Chuck Casey hit several big suplexes on Tyrone Shearer (who is a protege of Dean Waldorf, funny enough) and Shearer took some great big bumps. Shearer can really fly through the air on moves and while he might never be a break out star, he’s great in his enhancement role. Brent Carpenter -- who is reminiscent of Stuart Ferdinand -- looked lost a couple of times but he did take a nasty clothesline from Tully Casey and then took the Gutwrench Backbreaker and The Casey Brothers got an impressive win.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, The Casey Brothers defeated Brent Carpenter and Tyrone Shearer in 5:25 when Tully Casey pinned Brent Carpenter with a Gutwrench Backbreaker.

Earnest, “A decisive win for the Casey Brothers who continue to look good since arriving in HPW over the summer. They have their eyes set on the Tag Team Titles and they were clearly motivated tonight.”

Harper, ”That motivated served them well and I think that they’ve got to be near the top of the contender’s list for the Tag Team Titles.”

Earnest, “They’ve got to be. And speaking of tag teams, Taylor Gordy is standing by with Mr. Grappling and Sandman Winks. Take it away Taylor.”

TiIkT9w.jpgyfcP8WA.jpgvvVleAz.jpg

Gordy, “Thank you Marv. As you said, I’m standing here with Mr. Grappling and Sandman Winks. They’ve made it clear in the past that they have their eyes set on The Ring Generals and the World Tag Team Titles. Is that still the case, gentlemen,”

Winks, “Well let me tell you Taylor Gordy, it damn sure is. Me and my brother Grappling, we’ve wanted the World Tag Titles for a long time. Ever since we met each other. We’ve wanted the opportunity to be World Tag Champs. Tell them, Mr. Grappling.”

Grappling, “A lot of people might not realize that Sandman and I have known each other for a long time. We’ve teamed together all over this country. All over this great country. We’ve taken the mantle of tag team wrestling seriously -- even when we’ve both been pursuing singles careers. We also are men who can’t stand the kind of bullies that the Ring Generals are. We can’t stand the Cadillac Four -- and we want to take from them something that they hold dear. Those World Tag Titles. We’ve signed contracts with the Confederation of the Territories. Contracts to fight for those World Tag Team Titles and when the Ring Generals sign them and when the match is set, you can best believe that Grappling and Winks -- we’re going to be your World Tag Team Champions!”

Gordy, “Whoah! Mr. Grappling and Sandman Winks have already signed a contract to fight for the World Tag Team Titles. That’s blockbuster news and I know I can’t wait to see that match, but I also can’t wait for my next guest, “The Pharaoh” Talia Neema!”

Gordy, “Talia, two weeks ago you won the All Action Championship from Yvonne Ericks -- a title she had held for several months while also holding the Women’s Championship. What’s next for you?”

Neema, “You’re right, I did defeat the woman with the most momentum in all of pro wrestling. I pinned her shoulders CLEAN, one, two, three. I made her bow down to the true royalty in professional wrestling. She might as well have kissed my golden boots and soon she will. Because the next thing for me, Taylor, is unifying the Women’s and All Action Championship into one women’s title. I don’t think we need both titles. I think there only needs to be one woman carrying gold around HPW and it’s going to be me. So I’m challenging Yvonne Ericks to a match in two months at Thanksgiving Thunder -- I want to make sure she has ample time to prepare for losing. If she’s woman enough, she’ll meet me in the ring and we’ll put both our titles on the line and we’ll leave with just one ruler of this division and I can promise you, it’s going to be me!”

Gordy, “A Title unification match in two months? I can’t believe it. Will Yvonne Ericks accept? We’re going to have to find out.. But, back to you Marv and Grace.”

Earnest, “We just heard of two big title fights that should be coming down the pipeline here in HPW.”

“Ms. Texas” Lacey Montgomery versus Melinda Perry

The big Melinda Perry was back in action, this time against the undefeated Lacey Montgomery. Montgomery has really been presented as a future star in the making. Perry started out strong -- coming out of the gate she hit a big Samoan Drop on Lacey Montgomery and got a near fall but then Lacey Montgomery started fighting back. She hit several strikes that pepper Perry and then she hit a big suplex where she brought the big Melinda Perry over and drove her into the mat. Montgomery came off the middle rope with a Leg Drop and then locked in the Montgomery Leglock and Perry was forced to submit.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, Lacey Montgomery defeated Melinda Perry in 3:03 by submission with a Montgomery Leglock.

Earnest, “Lacey Montgomery continues to be impressive and has still not tasted defeat. That Montgomery Leglock has bought her win after win and sooner rather than later she’s going to be able to challenge for a championship here in HPW.”

Harper, ”She’ll make a great challenger and potentially an even better champion and I can’t wait to see her get her opportunity.”

Earnest, “Up next, her brothers Robert and Kyle take on the team of Chet Chavez and Flip Simkins.”

Robert & Kyle Montogmery versus Chet Chavez & Flip Simkins

Another one sided affair. The Montgomery family is being taken care of and in this match, Robert and Kyle got to showcase the natural teamwork that comes with brothers. Chet and Flip are both high flyers and they showed some chemistry as a team here. Flip came off the top rope for a beautiful moonsault -- but unfortunately for him, Robert caught him and ran into the turnbuckles -- driving Flip into them very painfully. Chet sprung into the ring, but was caught with a Montgomery Driver and the Montgomery Brothers got the win.

In an extremely short match, Robert Montgomery Jr. and Kyle Montgomery defeated Chet Chavez and Flip Simkins in 5:04 when Robert Montgomery Jr. pinned Chet Chavez with a Montgomery Driver.

Earnest, “The Montgomery Family continues to be impressive. I think all five of them are supremely talented and they keep showing it time and time again.”

Harper, ”You’re absolutely right Marv. They look like a dynasty in the making.”

Earnest, “Up next is our main event, but before the match starts, Taylor Gordy is standing by with Nicky Champion, Jimmy Chipolata, and Happy Elwood.”

TiIkT9w.jpg4oHBsBP.jpg6te35Sa.jpgeybyL3P.jpg

Gordy, “In just a few minutes, you’re going to be in that ring competing together against Deverell’s Army. How do you feel going into this contest?”

Champion, “We feel ready. For almost ten months. Ten long months, Deverell’s Army has been after me. Since I showed up here. They’ve wanted me out of this company. Out of this sport. They’ve attacked me. They’ve bloodied me. They’ve tried to injure me and end my career. But they can’t. Zippy Deverell has said it’s because of what I’ve done in the past. Because of the mistakes I’ve made. And maybe he’s telling the truth. Or maybe… Maybe he just doesn’t like that I’m here. Either way tonight, me and my friends here, we’re going to step into that ring with Deverell’s Army and we’re going to beat them pillar to post. We’re going to fight them. We’re going to hurt them and we’re going to beat them and when we’re done… When the bell rings and we’re victorious, Zippy Deverell is going to have no choice but to meet me one more time. Man against man. In a strap match.”

Nicky Champion and co walk the short distance from the interview area to the ring.

Gordy, “And the stakes for this match just got higher! Marv. Grace, back to you for the play by play.”

Nicky Champion, Jimmy Chipolata, & Happy Elwood versus Deverell’s Army w/ Haley Buck

The main event of the evening had a big match feel because there was just so much bad blood going into it. Deverell’s Army and Nicky Champion have been going toe to toe since December of 2023 and there is no love lost between the two teams. Senior official Bret Graveson had his hands full in this because it was clear right from the beginning that the normal rules were not going to apply. All six men brawled around the ring. They slammed each other into the guard rails and into the wooden floor of the studio. Deverell kept trying to get away from Champion -- but Champion was focused on him and Champion battered him with hard chops and slams and Zippy tried to make the tag, but Champion wouldn’t let him. Chipolata and Elwood each got their shots in, but this was the Nicky Champion show. Finally Deverell was able to tag out to Kalder Tagg and the big Tagg and Nicky Champion exchanged punches and it got wild and the crowd was really into it. They loved seeing Nicky in action and the wild nature of the match helped them. Deverell’s Army was able to get some good offense in but in the end, Nicky Champion hit Kalder Tagg with the Hawkeye Hammer and got the win.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Nicky Champion, Jimmy Chipolata and Happy Elwood defeated Deverell's Army (Zippy Deverell, Kalder Tagg and Wolfie Tagg) in 18:35 when Nicky Champion pinned Kalder Tagg with a Hawkeye Hammer.

In terms of in-ring work, Nicky Champion was head and shoulders above everyone else.

Earnest, “What a night of professional wrestling action! We know that we’re going to see a World Tag Title match in the future. A women’s title unification match… and a Strap Match between Nicky Champion and Zippy Deverell! We’re all out of time though so for Heartland Pro Wrestling and Grace Harper, I’m Marv Earnest saying Thank You for joining us on Wrestling Spotlight, we’ll see you next week.”

Zippy stared out of the window of his motel room and watched the rain pound the cars parked outside and listened to the sound of Yvonne’s shower singing. It had been a good night. A night he had been waiting for the entirety of his career. He had made his television debut. He got to cut a promo and work a television main event against Nicky Champion. They were building to a crescendo in a program they had started in December. Finally building to the payoff. Zippy knew where it was headed and he was fine with it. He was going to get another main event match, another gimmick match -- this time a strap match. He was going to get more promo time and he was going to have the opportunity to show off to the wrestling world.</p><p> </p><p>

He watched the rain fall with curiosity. It was one of those Indiana fall rains that he had come to know from the time he has spent up in Indiana working. A hard, cold downpour where the rain came down like sheets instead of individual drops and distorted everything. It was disconcerting and relaxing all at the same time. He had always found the rain interesting. The way it could cleanse and destroy -- the dichotomy of power of rain.</p><p> </p><p>

He lifted his glass of bourbon to his mouth and took a slow drink. It was nights like this where he missed his father the most. His dad would have been proud of him tonight. He worked with Nicky Champion -- his dad would have been beside himself with pride. Zippy wasn’t a great wrestler in a technical sense. He knew that. He wasn’t ever going to produce five star classic catch-as-catch can matches. He was a solid enough brawler and a good bump taker and a really good promo. Zippy knew that he had taken the skillset he had, limited as it is, and pushed himself further than a lot of people thought he’d be able to push himself. He had, in just about five years in Indianapolis, turned himself into a credible heel, into a credible main eventer. He had been involved in marquee feuds and major programs. He had main evented big shows. He had bled and cut vicious promos. He had taken beatings and thrice been Indiana Heavyweight Champion. His father would have loved it. It was his father who had gotten him into wrestling there in their small living room. They watched everything that was on TV. SWF, USPW, TCW. His dad had every SCCW show on tape and they’d watch those. His dad had shows from the TWL and a variety of companies from the 80s. His dad had been a tapetrader and a wrestling fanatic and it had rubbed off on Zippy.</p><p> </p><p>

He took another drink and turned from the window. Zippy missed his dad. He missed calling him after a show and telling him about the match. He missed sitting in the living room with some of his mom’s cooking and a cold drink and wrestling on the TV and getting enraptured by the stories while he and his father cheered the faces and booed the heels like they were supposed to. Wrestling had been like a phylactery for his father and maybe because wrestling wasn’t dead his father wasn’t really dead either. Zippy had a month to prepare for the strap match. A month to prepare for the crescendo of his feud with Nicky Champion and he was going to bring his best work. He had to. He was going to cut promos and work a match that would make his father proud up in the big wrestling stadium in the sky.</p><p> </p><p>

The thought of a wrestling arena in the sky made Zippy smile. He hoped that was what paradise was like. He took a long sip of his bourbon and he heard the shower water turn off. Yvonne was down with her shower. He would have showered with her, but she liked to shower alone. He couldn’t be mad at that. Zippy sat on the bed and stretched his legs out and finished his bourbon. He had a month to prepare. He was going to be prepared. He was going to bring his A game.</p>
