It is a world that never stops growing and changing and mutating to be something different. It has to change in order to stay relevant. Much like the Latin saying: vox populi vox dei. The voice of the people is the voice of God. As the people have demanded change, pro wrestling has had to give it to them. I recognized that trend from the sidelines. I had not ever been directly involved in the wrestling business. I was not a worker. I wasn’t a promoter or a producer. I was none of these things. I was just married to a guy who was famous in all corners of the globe. I had been his rock and his confidant when he was running Total Championship Wrestling. I was his sounding board when he decided to sell. Yes, my name is Jennifer Cornell and my husband is Tommy Cornell. You might think this story is about him, but it’s not. Everyone knows who he is -- they know his stories. They know about his year in SWF and how they let him get away and how he took TCW to new heights. They know about his time in 21CW and the box office records he has helped set in the UK. That is his story, but not mine. People know me as his wife. They know me as the Walter Scott Prize winning author. They may have read one of the fifteen titles that they could find on a variety of bookshelves. Maybe they’d seen me on talk shows talking about my books or attended one of my guest lectures at Oxford or Cardiff. They didn’t know that I loved professional wrestling. I wasn’t just married to a wrestler -- I was married to the business. I wasn’t a wrestler, no, but when Tommy wanted to buy Hollyweird Grappling Company and turn it into Total Championship Wrestling, he needed money that he didn’t have. It was my money that helped provide his initial investment and helped get other investors on board. It was my contacts in the publishing world that led to other investors wanting to take a gamble on a wrestling company. I had always loved the business. The sport. For years, I tried to convince Tommy to give TCW a women’s division. He resisted. He didn’t think it fit with his vision. We had many arguments about that. I also tried to get him to convince Jeff Nova to bring women’s wrestling to 21CW, he tried but Nova resisted. So I had to take matters into my own hands. In 2017, I watched AAA close. I watched 5SWW have to close their dojo. I saw openings to continue to capture shares of a market that was underserved. What about fans that wanted all-female companies? Fans that wanted to see something different than overly-muscular men working too fast and selling too little? Or fans that wanted to see something other than men yelling at each other? They weren’t being served. So I made some calls and some decisions. First, I helped finance and set up two dojos -- one in the UK and one in Australia. Both areas are underserved in female talent because of lack of opportunity. I wanted to change that. I also reached out to Farrah Hesketh and got her to agree to support my efforts. I contacted Sensational Ogiwara and got her to also agree to support my efforts. With those two on board, I could continue my plans. I contacted Pete Moriarty in Australia. It didn’t take much convincing to get him on board. He had been wanting an opportunity to promote his own shows and this would give him that. He was going to be our guy in Australia. My guy on the ground to promote shows and help build a women’s wrestling scene there. He’d use the two girls that were in ZEN and I helped get some of the girls in Japan who weren’t working with 5SWW. He’d be covered with talent until the training school I’d previously set up had its first graduating class. Mexico was a lot easier. Luchadora Original had already been talking about setting up shop and over the past half-decade, CILL and OLLIE had really elevated some of the women. So that would get Mexico on board for us. Canada took some work. I wanted Victoria Stone-McFly and her sister-in-law, Tamara, on board. Between the two of them, they were the most important female Canadian wrestlers and minds of the last twenty years. Tamara was alot easier to get on board than Victoria, but I was able to get them both on board. All that was left was for me to officially start my own wrestling company and I did. That’s right. Golden Girls of the Ring. Based in the UK. Using British and European women primarily -- though not exclusively. We were the last piece of the puzzle. Six companies coming together from all corners of the globe to present women’s wrestling. We all had different styles to cater to our different audiences -- but we all took ourselves, and the business seriously. We all wanted to present women’s professional wrestling as a serious business and not just a niche product to be featured as a division or used in integrated matches to go viral. We were the Women’s Wrestling Council and we would be taken seriously. Author's Note: This is another joint project between DarK_RaideR and myself. We each had so much fun with our WWA diary in '16 that we wanted to do something in the same vein for 2020. So this will be a two-player diary and while in the first diary there were limited predictions and story elements, we hope to provide a little bit more of a robust reading experience. She had a vision for women's wrestling in all parts of the globe and she was able to convince prominent women's promotions already in existence -- as well as several people to start new women's organizations -- to help fulfil this vision. In addition, she founded the Women's Wrestling Network -- an internet subscription service -- for the WWC companies to broadcast their shows on. With an initial roster of six companies -- focused on seven markets (Cornell did keep the British Isles and Europe for herself), the WWC looks to become a major player in the world of professional wrestling. Based out of Houston, Texas, her idea was to combine the traditional American style of women's wrestling with that of the luchadoras of Mexico to create an exciting hybrid. That'll come in time, I hope we do a good job of presenting the wrestlers and warming you up to them. For QAW especially, I'm planning of writing an update before the first show, let people know about what's changed since 2016, from Jillian Jarvis and Charity Sweet departing for USPW to the face/heel turns, title changes, storylines and formation/purpose of stables. DarK_RaideR Posted May 6, 2020 Share Posted May 6, 2020 Phil Vibert: So the big news today obviously is the formation of the Women's Wrestling Council, brought to life by none other than Jennifer Cornell! Most wrestling fans only know her as Tommy Cornell's wife and she's probably the last person bearing that last name that anyone would expect to see pull off such a move. TCW veteran Tommy Cornell's moved back home to 21CW with his cousin Eddie, while Jennifer was basically out of the business and having much success as a writer. Now she's setup up a global broadcasting network, dojos and promotions around the world, including her very own one named Golden Goddesses of the Ring. Now there's a lot to break down in this whole venture so I won't go there, but I must say it's interesting to see it happen. Women's wrestling has been in a weird spot since the collapse of AAA, women's wrestling has always been a big deal in Japan but 5SSW took a huge hit in the wake of the whole tsunami situation, so there's a real gap in the market for all-female promotions. That's a smart move by Ms. Cornell. Farrah Hesketh's "Queens of American Wrestling" will be the U.S. representative of the group and it finds itself in the spotlight once again, though I'll say it's probably the first time this doesn't have anything to do with AAA. I'm saying this because Farrah herself was a star in AAA throughout the nineties and up to her retirement in 2002 following a knee injury. She set up shop with her own promotion in Houston, Texas in 2010 and a lot of the talk back then was how she was wise to avoid conflict with Seattle-based AAA. Even after AAA held its last show in the summer of 2017, the talk about QAW was what'll happen now that they're the only all-female wrestling company in the States. This time it's Farrah's group holding the fort and representing the States on pretty much a global stage. This is huge and of course, it's drawn a lot of new eyeballs to the promotion so I think it's time to re-introduce QAW to a wider audience. Listeners of this podcast probably don't need me to hold their hand and explain everything from scratch, plus there's a few fan-made videos online for anyone just getting into the product, but I figure it's worth doing a quick recap of what's happened with the company since the last time they had the spotlight on them with the closure of AAA in mid-2017. Off to the big leagues The two faces you might notice are missing are Jillian Jarvis and Charity Sweet. Jarvis, known as "the Iron Lady" thanks to both her hard hitting style and no-nonsense heel character, is a five time champion so you can basically say she's done it all before moving on to join USPW. The signing of Charity Sweet by that very same promotion came as more of a surprise, considering she hasn't held any titles in her six years with QAW. If you told me she'd get signed by a major promotion, I'd probably go with SWF considering her stunning looks and charisma, but here we are with both ladies in USPW's Women's Division. There's a Storm brewin' For QAW fans, Jillian Jarvis was also one more very important thing: the founder and leader of Ronin 3, the only group in the company and a vicious heel trio under the management of JJ's real life boyfriend, Vinny Cruz. The group ran amok since its formation in mid-2013 but it's main antagonist has been QAW's big time babyface "the Queen of Hearts" Danielle Sweetheart. Jarvis' subordinates were Juana Huracan and Toni Parissi, a decorated team also known as Crackdown and it all came together in a big storyline that involved a face turn and title switch. Essentially, Huracan started having second thoughts regarding the group's vicious tactics and it all boiled down to a big moment where she was ordered to break Sweetheart's leg following an unsuccessful challenge for Jarvis' title. Huracan refused and the group turned on her, leading to her babyface, sorry, tecnico turn and a subsequent feud that saw the formation of Storm Front, her alliance with Alexis Lee Littlefeather and newcomer Sonnaz Shah, meant to rival Ronin 3, culminating in a "loser leaves QAW" match for the American title; Huracan, now Americanized to "Hurricane" had her big moment, gaining her first ever QAW American title victory and redemption by driving Jarvis out of the company, thus writing her off and taking the belt off her so she could join USPW. Can't keep a bad woman down With Hurricane's victory and Jarvis driven out, it finally looked like Ronin 3 were disbanded. Alas, this was not the case and in a shocking rudo turn, former fan favorite Foxxy LaRue took control of the group she'd been feuding against for years just months after Jarvis was gone. The group quickly returned to full strength with the addition of Becca Barton, formerly known as Emma Bitch north of the border, and proved they were anything but done by helping LaRue defeat Hurricane for the QAW American title in April of 2019, less than a year after Hurricane had won it off Jarvis. All out faction warfare The next turning point in the company's storytelling came in late 2019, when they pulled the trigger on what's considered their latest innovation after the intentional blurring of lines between tecnicos and rudos, the prominent use of stables in a way that's been traditionally associated with companies in Japan. The story leading up to the big match was that Emma May, who'd been running a -pun intended- MMA gimmick of intentionally injuring opponents after her matches, had sidelined Danielle Sweetheart with one. Apparently she escaped Juana Hurricane only for Emma to slap on the kimura and give her a kayfabe injury, but I digress. So with Sweetheart out, the path was clear for Alina America to be the big babyface that would feud with Foxxy LaRue for the American title. These two had their long-awaited match in Thanksgiving Thunder and, as expected, Ronin 3 were there to interfere. In a shocking and emotional moment however, Farrah Hesketh's very own protégé Ashley Grover made her return, assisted by fellow Texas cowgirl Houston Handley and Teresa Perez, the group that would become known as The Line, as in "first line of defense". Grover and Co. took care of Ronin 3, sparking a new feud, but that wasn't the end of it. Emma May had apparently formed her own group "The Furies" with Tag Team champions Marie Punnen and Honey Badger and they too were out to make a statement. Once more, Alina America was fighting an uphill battle before she was saved by the triumphant return of Danielle Sweetheart who got her revenge on Emma May and held the Furies at bay to create an opening for America to hit the Southern Lights Bomb and score the pin to become champion. Tag Team Trouble Meanwhile, in QAW's tag division, the driving feud was between Ronin 3's Crackdown and the tecnico team of Pamela Rojo and Hellcat Hernandez, known as The Anti-Establishment. I'd argue Hernandez was a pioneer as a morally ambiguous "tweener" character, thing is they rolled with it and turned her rudo when she attacked Rojo after one loss too many. This coincided with the rise of the tremendous Anderson & Snyder pairing, so Hernandez got a new lease in life while the Anti-Establishment was disbanded to allow Anderson & Snyder to shine. And shine they did, with 3 tag title runs to date. Their dominance has only been seriously challenged after the arrival of CILL's Mariana Torres and Pinky Perez, pushing them to join forces with Hernandez as The Clenched Fist. A shockwave of perfection After their breakup, Rojo and Hernandez feuded over the QAW Shockwave title throughout 2018 and 2019, before an out-of-nowhere win by current champion Sarah Taylor changed the scenery. Taylor, who had been getting nowhere, was repackaged as... what I'd best describe as "an obnoxious Millennial" type of character by the name of Little Miss Perfect and the gimmick caught on like a wildfire, leading her to her first taste of championship gold. Now with a title to back up her bragging, LMP can only get more annoying and fans have already noted the clash of characters (and blatant opposition in names) between her and Modesty Pador, who is believed to be the one chosen to feud with her over the Shockwave title. Alexis Lee Littlefeather was also a great symbolic pick for people to see wrestling, the former gimmicky Indian Babe of Sin City now turned into a full blown proper wrestler who's embraced her Native American roots in QAW, as she grappled with the champion. All three girls pulled off all their big moves, rookies Malloy and Quick especially as they’re eager to make a name for themselves. Not regular tag teams though, but rather two duos featuring women from the same faction in a match fuelled by the rivalry between their badass group leaders. With Alexis Lee Littlefeather wrestling in the opening title match, her other two Storm Front allies were booked to wrestle here and apparently in an attempt to make things fair and even, their opponents were also a leader-rookie pairing in Hernandez and Luck. Other than a short pairing between the rookies halfway into the match to let them shine and pick up the pace, this match was worked mainly with Hernandez wrestling Shah and Hurricane wrestling Luck. Sweetheart, fresh off her return from injury, was looking to show she can still go, maybe even start building up some steam for another Queen of the Ring tournament win. On the other side, Alvarado has been with the company for 9 years, won the tag team and Shockwave titles twice but never the big prize, thus a victory over Sweetheart could really help her ascend to the next level. Both women were really fired up to score the win here even if no prize was on the line or no personal rivalry fuelled them. However, since Commissioner Bomb made this a tag match with each side involving a faction leader, the pairings are unusual enough to feel fresh while their non-wrestling teammates still remain at ringside to provide support and remind viewers of the larger feud between the groups. Despite not regularly teeming with each other, both teams seem to function well enough, never showing any timing issues but no flashes of brilliance either. Unlike most QAW matches, this one is paced slow with lots of tags and some quality back and forth grappling, a sharp response to those criticizing the company’s product as “flashy flips with little actual skill or substance”. As things move on though and the women get tired, Ronin 3’s side starts sneaking in some assists whenever they can, infuriating fans as well as the Line’s members. Parissi especially seems to work particularly well with any shenanigans Vinny Cruz comes up with, which should be no surprise given how they’re both the only founding members of the group and long time allies; there’s an instinctive understanding of each other, a bond forged through time and experience. Still, Grover and Handley hold their ground, with Perez at ringside gradually losing her patience and referee Erin Lawrence struggling to maintain control of the match so it doesn’t break down into all out gang warfare. Not an enviable position to be in and not an easy job to pull off when there’s so much to look out for, which is exactly how Vinny Cruz likes it when he pulls Handley’s hair from the outside to stop her momentum and set her up for LaRue’s Flash Head Kick. I haven't quite decided -- I usually decide my 'season finale' when I finish fully sketching out my first year and when I want to peak things. At Battle Valkyries Pro Wrestling's first event -- Valhalla Rising, Etsuko Arihyoshi defeated Kaori Mochizuki in a highly competitive match up to win the championship. Etsuko has spent the entirety of her eleven-year career in 5 Star Supreme Wrestling where she has been a highly respected competitor. I’m Ian Rosa, the voice of Golden Goddess of the Ring and I’m joined by wrestling journalist Anne Trenningham here in the broadcast booth. We are absolutely chuffed to be here tonight.” Trenningham, “We absolutely are. Women’s wrestling has been a black hole in the British Isles for far too long and tonight Ian, we get to see its birth! We have big matches signed for tonight’s show. I know I’m absolutely buzzing.” Rosa, “You’ve been around this sport for a long time, Anne. What are you most looking forward to tonight?” Treeningham “I’m not being funny but the main event. Four of the best women’s wrestlers on the planet in one ring competing for the Golden Crown? It’s going to be a bloody good night of action!” Rosa, “It definitely will be! Let’s go ringside for the very first contest in Golden Goddess of the Ring history.” Opening Match Singles Match Twenty Minute Time Limit Gypsy Rose versus “The Black Widow” Zofia Jankovic The very first match up in the history of Golden Goddess of the Ring pit the young Canadian, Gypsy Rose who has been working out of Europe since the tail end of 2018 against the dangerous Belarusian striker and martial artist Zofia Jankovic. Jankovic was representing the Continent fight camp, a group of mainland European wrestlers. The highflyer Rose came out of the gate trying to use her speed to her advantage -- despite only being a pro for two years, Rose showed that she has a real understanding of what her strengths are and she tried to avoid standing still for too long and getting caught with one of Jankovic’s kicks. Unfortunately for Rose, despite her speed her inexperience showed when she springboarded off the second rope and was looking for a cutter -- but Jankovic moved out of the way so Rose crashed and burned. Upon getting back to her feet, Rose was subject to a barrage of precise strikes as Jankovic went to work. Eventually, the Belarusian striker hit her K.O. Head Kick and Gypsy Rose was out and Jankovic notched the first when in Golden Goddesses of the Ring history. Zofia Jankovic defeated Gypsy Rose in 9:50 via pinfall after hitting the K.O. Head Kick Match Rating Singles Match Twenty Minute Time Limit Serena Ventura versus Yayoi Kurmochi The second match of GGOTR’s first show pit the young German sensation, also representing The Continent against Strong Style Rising’s Yayoi Kurmochi. Kurmochi trained in Japan under famous joshi wrestler Kit Hatoyama and GGOTR is her first break. Both women are relatively inexperienced with a combined experience of less than three full years. They worked at the beginning as both women seemed to be hesitant. It was a back and forth affair that picked up speed as the match progressed and we started to see some slick moves from Yayoi -- who clearly has a bundle of potential. At one point she ran up the corner and backflipped over Ventura. Ventura turned around only to catch a flying knee. The knee was followed up by a beautiful Sky Twister Press, Red Arrow, and Kurmochi got her first victory. Yayoi Kurmochi defeated Serena Ventura in 14:50 via pinfall after hitting the Sky Twister Press. Match Rating Singles Match Twenty Minute Time Limit Jeri Behr versus K.T. Devonshire The third match up of the night -- and the third contest that has seen a representative of The Continent, this time in the form of veteran Sweedish grappler Jeri Behr against the first representative of All the Queen’s Women, young British wrestler K.T. Devonshire. This was a fast-paced affair. Behr is a former high-level competitive gymnast and despite being thirty-six with eighteen years of experience, is still in incredible shape. Devonshire is a twenty-one-year-old technician-flyer with loads of potential and the two women really went at it. Behr did the spot where she walked down the ropes while holding Devonshire’s arm and then bounced off for a flying headscissor. Devonshire tried to take out the knee of Behr throughout the contest -- but the cagey veteran continued to be a step ahead of the young woman. Devonshire hit an enzugari and went to follow up with a Flying Elbow Drop -- that missed and allowed Behr to hit a Standing Moonsault for the win. Jeri Behr defeated K.T. Devonshire in 12:25 via pinfall after hitting a Standing Moonsault. Match Rating Tag Team Match Twenty Minute Time Limit Viper Squad versus The Dublin Gals The first (and only) tag team match on the card pit the unaffiliated Viper Squad against All the Queen’s Women’s Dublin Gals. This was a very hard-hitting affair as all four women like to lay their stuff in and work snug. Viper Squad took control early on with Viper and Maisie tagged in and out and kept Cassie O’Peter (fun side note, Cassie and Maisie are in a romantic relationship) isolated in the corner. Laurels, in particular, really laid in some stuff -- including a series of forearms that were really vicious. O’Peter fought back and hit a headbutt on Laurels that sent the other women stumbling and allowed O’Peter to tag in Kerrigan. Blazing Blair came in with a lot of fire and made the big comeback -- including a moment where she dropkicked Laurels and flipped out of the dropkick to land on her feet. A superkick to Viper McKenna sent the veteran to the outside and Kerrigan was able to hit her Top Rope Legdrop on Laurels to secure the victory for The Dublin Gals. The Dublin Gals defeated the Viper Squad in 14:48 via pinfall after Blair Kerrigan hit Maisie Laurels with a Top Rope Legdrop. Match Rating Main Event Four Way Dance Ladder Match Sixty Minute Time Limit “The Mistress of the DDT” Steph Blake vs. Aki Kamio vs. “The Pain from the Ukraine” Karen Bilous versus “The Red Queen” Thea Davis The main event of the evening was a four-way ladder match for the Golden Crown Championship. The Championship was suspended above the ring and all four women -- one from each fight camp and the unaffiliated pool in GGOTR all stood in the ring and stared up at it. It was an odd mixture of women for a ladder match -- as Steph Blake is not known for any sort of aerial attack, Karen Bilous is Europe’s Strongest Woman and doesn’t really take to the air. Thea Davis is an all-arounder and Kamio, does have a lucha-influenced joshi style -- so most of the aerial spots were between Dais and Kamio with Blake and Bilous basing for them. They didn’t immediately go for the ladders -- instead each woman looked like they were trying to wear down their competitors to get the opening. Bilous and her power dominated the early portion of the match -- she tossed Kamio around like a rag doll and tossed Davis onto Blake. Blake was able to hit some nasty strikes and hit a hanging DDT on Kamio where she hung Kamio’s feet on the ladder and spiked her down -- that took Kamio out of the match for most of it while Davis, Bilous, and Blake continued to go at it. Davis hit a dive off the middle of a ladder onto Bilous and Blake -- but the two women caught her and ended up working together to press slam her into the side of the ladder she jumped off of. At one point, Bilous was on the ladder and looked like she was about to retrieve the championship. Kamio springboarded off the ropes and drop kicked the ladder so that Bilous fell off and hit her torso off the top rope. Kamio fired up and reset up the ladder, but Steph Blake was there to hit her with another DDT variation that took Kamio out of the match for good. Blake and Davis tussled and it look like when Davis kicked Blake in the hand that she might have done some damage. A superkick from Davis knocked Blake down and out and Davis was able to climb the ladder and retrieve the Golden Crown Championship. Thea Davis defeated Steph Blake, Aki Kamio, and Karen Bilous in 24:50 after climbing the ladder and retrieving the GGOTR Golden Crown Championship to become the first champion in GGOTR history. Historian Posted May 15, 2020 Author Share Posted May 15, 2020 The World Women's Council has crowned its first World Tag Team Champions as The CHAOS Connection, Shiori Jippensha and HEART Saitoh defeated the Culture Club to win the World Tag Team Titles. Both women are very accomplished wrestlers and have been fixtures in the 5SWW scene before teaming up this year and winning the World Tag Team Titles.
