The Trials of Morales...or how I learned to stop worrying and embrace the Koloff

Jan 1970 - July (Wk.3) 1973

WWWF World Heavyweight - Nick Bockwinkel

WWWF US Heavyweight - Pedro Morales

WWWF Light Heavyweight - Ray Stevens

WWWF World Tag Team - Abe & The Crusher

WWWF US Tag Team - Vacant

Jan 1970 - Sept (Wk.3) 1973

WWWF World Heavyweight - Nick Bockwinkel

WWWF Intercontinental - Vacant

WWWF Light Heavyweight - Ray Stevens

WWWF World Tag Team - Abe & The Crusher

WWWF US Tag Team - The Spoiler & Bull Ramos

Abe & Crusher have been pinning and submitting foes left and right. Combinations of Executioners, Gorilla Monsoon, and Mark Lewin have proven as formidable opponents but it appears like the odd couple have a firm grip on their tag titles. Gorilla Monsoon had decided to drift from his powerhouse team Firing Squad (with Executioner & Lewin) and joined Luke Graham & Tor Kamata to form Controlled CHAOS. Now it seems like Luke & Tor have the right energy in their corner with Lou Albano being himself and ranting away.

Gary Hart's Syndicate is back in the mix and snatched the US tag team titles from Dominic DeNucci & Tony Parisi. Having upset The Blackjacks, it almost appeared like DeNucci & Parisi were the next big thing. Nope. Spoiled. Gary Hart used a loaded glove and The Spoiler locked in the Hart Krusher on poor Dom. The ref, Tommy Young, missed the sneaky manager and awarded Spoiler and Bull Ramos the US tag belts.

Taking his time and playing mindgames, Bockwinkel has been getting around to his commitments as World Champion. All while Bobby Heenan plays his mindgames and dispatches his goons. Pedro Morales was determined to make sure that wouldn't happen to him and took up with Abe & The Crusher for training. In their first meeting, Pedro nearly won but eventually took a powerdriver to lose 2 falls to 1 (98). A second meeting was arranged, and this time kept inside a cage to keep the Heenan antics out. Bockwinkel won again (92) and that was that. Earl Maynard appears to be the next in line for Bockwinkel.

Morales had not put his US title on the line during the Bockwinkel program, so he was facing immediate scrutiny to defend his belt. To prove it to his fans and himself, Morales jumped right into a program with Ivan Koloff. No dirty tactics employed, Ivan won fair and square. After accepting the belt Koloff's manager, Tony Angelo, went and petitioned that Koloff deserves more recognition than as a US Champion. McMahon acquiesced but not without turning Koloff's request into a 4-man Intercontinental Tournament with Masa Saito (Asia), Pedro Morales (North America), and Spiros Arion* (Australia).

* Arion is currently the IWA Heavyweight champion in World Championship Wrestling of Australia.
