UFC 2020: When Sven Took Charge II

Monday of Week 1 of April 2020

“In light of recent events, Endeavor Group Holdings feels that it has no choice but to relieve Dana White of his duties as President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. A new President will be named in due course.”

And with that short statement, the long and often controversial reign of Dana White as President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship came to an end. It was a sudden move, but not entirely unexpected, and people had already begun speculating on who would take over from Dana. Whoever was chosen to fill the position would face the challenge of living up to the legacy of one of sport’s most colourful characters, and they would be tasked with guiding the UFC and proving to everyone that they were deserving of the chance to take the helm of the world’s premier Mixed Martial Arts promotion.

“Endeavor Group Holdings would like to announce that the new President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship is Sven Lundgren. Mr. Lundgren has many years experience in the world of corporate management, and Endeavour Inc. feels that he is the ideal candidate for the role.

Mr. Lundgren will be introduced to the media at a press conference tomorrow morning.”

It was another short statement, this one addressing the future of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Its fate was now in the hands of someone who was, to almost everyone, a total unknown. But this unknown had the confidence of Endeavour Inc., and that was, for now, all that mattered. Would this unknown, Sven Lundgren, have what it takes to guide the UFC through troubled times? What would the fate of the Ultimate Fighting Championship be? And would we ever get to see Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson? Only time would tell.

From the author: The next entry will be Sven’s press conference, after which there will be a number of entries to cover the ‘official announcement’ of the first three months of events, with complete cards. After that, we’ll be getting right into it. I’ll be using the Modern Warriors update that covers up to the end of February, with a few tweaks, which were mainly to make the required updates to take into account the fights that took place in March.

During the press conference, Lundgren took questions from the assembled media, on a variety of MMA-related topics, not just the UFC, and there was a lot of news and information that came out;</p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="50712" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong><em>–</em></strong> Lundgren said that he’s been fan of MMA for a long time, and has even attended UFC shows in the past. Lundgren said that when he heard that Endeavor Group Holdings was intending to remove Dana White from his role as President of the UFC, he immediately began to pitch himself for the position. He’s excited about the chance to help the promotion move forward, although he admits that it will be a challenge, with Lundgren expressing the belief that it may be the biggest challenge of his professional career.<p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> As a follow up, someone asked Lundgren what some of his favourite fights were, and Lundgren said that his favourite fight this year was the Women’s Strawweight title fight between Zhang Weili and Joanna Jędrzejczyk. Lundgren said that he would like to see a rematch, but only at the right time, as Lundgren conceded that both women will need a lot of time to recover from their fight because it was so brutal.</p><p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> Although he refused to be drawn on specifics, Lundgren said that he would be making attempts to lure certain names out of retirement. Lundgren said that he felt that time away from the sport had allowed certain fighters to rest and recover, and that he hoped that the fighters in question still had the drive to compete.</p><p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> Lundgren said that he was in favour of allowing knees to the head of a downed opponent, and that he would be looking into whether that is something the various athletic commissions were agreeable to. </p><p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> The event calendar will be fairly loaded for the next couple of months, and that there would be 3-4 shows a month for a while, but that there are plans to taper down on the frequency of shows in the second half of the year. Lundgren said that he will be looking to put as many fights as possible on the preliminary cards to see if that will allow them to run fewer events in total throughout the year.</p><p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> Lundgren said that there will be no more ‘commission shopping’ when it came to the licensing of fighters. If a fighter can’t get licensed in one state, then, unless there is something clearly egregious about the ruling, the UFC will abide by the decision of the commission.</p><p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> Lundgren then announced a revamp of their in-house drug testing policy, which is implemented in regions where MMA is unregulated. Lundgren said that they intend for their in-house testing to make it virtually impossible for cheaters to beat the tests. When asked what kind of suspensions they would hand out for fighter who fails tests, Lundgren said that that would be revealed when the details of the revamped testing program are announced.</p><p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> Lundgren said that while some fans may be expecting the return of the Ultimate Fighter show, they shouldn’t expect it any time soon, if at all.</p><p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> It was revealed that the UFC will go back to naming PPV’s in the manner that they did in the early days, and that UFC 249 will be titled The Unbeatable vs. The Unstoppable.</p><p> </p><p> <strong><em>–</em></strong> At the end of the press conference, the UFC released a partial schedule for the rest of the year;</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><span style="font-size:18px;">UFC Calendar for 2020</span></span></strong></p></div><p> </p><p> <strong>UFC Fight Night</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 3 of April 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 249: The Unbeatable vs. The Unstoppable </strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of April 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC on ESPN 8</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 1 of May 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC Fight Night</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 2 of May 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 250</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of May 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC Fight Night</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 1 of June 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC Fight Night</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 2 of June 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC Fight Night</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 3 of June 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 251</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of June 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC on ESPN 9</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 1 of July 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC Fight Night</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 2 of July 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 252</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of July 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC Fight Night</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 2 of August)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 253</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of August 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 254</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of September 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 255</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of October 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 256</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of November 2020)</em></p><p> <strong>UFC 257</strong> <em>(Saturday of Week 4 of December 2020)</em></p><p></p></div></blockquote></div><p></p>

<p><p>Announcement of UFC Fight Night 171</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="vsaa7XB.jpg" data-src="<a href="https://i.imgur.com/vsaa7XB.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i.imgur.com/vsaa7XB.jpg"</a> src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p></p><p>

<span style="font-size:24px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Announcement of UFC Fight Night 171</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p></p><p>

The UFC will return to London for UFC Fight Night 171 with a main event that will have British fans on the edge of their seats, as countryman Leon Edwards faces the former welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley.</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

This will be the first main event for Edwards, and it is undoubtedly the biggest fight of his career as victory for Edwards will propel him up the ladder of contention and put him within reach of a shot at the welterweight championship. For Woodley, it’s his first fight since losing the welterweight title to Kamaru Usman last March at UFC 235, and a win will reaffirm Woodley’s status as one of the sport’s premier welterweights.</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

It won’t be easy for Woodley, who will be going into enemy territory, but it’s a fight he must win in order to stand out in one of the sport’s most crowded divisions.</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

In the co-main event of the evening, Derek Brunson will also be venturing into enemy territory as he takes on one of the UK’s most popular fighters, Darren Till. These two men are two of the hardest hitters in the middleweight division, and one solid hit from either man could see their opponent left crumpled on the mat, so there will undoubtedly be drama throughout this contest, for however long it lasts.</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

Other British fighters on the main card include Danny Roberts, who will take on Denmark’s Nicolas Dalby, Jack Marshman, who faces Kevin Holland, as well as Darren Stewart, Jack Shore, and Marc Diakiese.</p><p> </p><p></p><p>

Announcement of UFC 249

Announcement of UFC 249

UFC 249, titled The Unbeatable vs. The Unstoppable, will be headlined by UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov defending his title against Tony Ferguson. For the undefeated Nurmagomedov, this will be the third defence of his title, having previously defended it against Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Ferguson, meanwhile, is on an incredible run of form, having won 12 fights in a row, an unbeaten streak that stretches back eight years. In a stacked division like lightweight, that kind of success makes Ferguson the undisputed top contender and will ensure the champion faces the toughest test of his career.

The co-main event to UFC 249 will see Alexander Volkanovski make the first defence of his UFC Featherweight Championship against the firm fan favourite, the ‘Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung. Volkanovski upset Max Holloway at UFC 245 to take the title, and the rugged Australian will be hoping to get his reign off to a successful start, which won’t be easy with an opponent like the Korean Zombie. Jung is coming off the biggest win of his career, a first round knockout of Frankie Edgar, Jung demolishing the normally durable Edgar in just over three minutes.

This will be Jung’s second crack at lightweight gold, and the Zombie will be looking to make history by becoming the first ever Korean UFC champion.

In other action, we’ll see the hotly anticipated rematch between Jessica Andrade and Rose Namajunas. These two first met at UFC 237, when a well-timed slam off a submission attempt saw Andrade knock Namajunas unconscious and take the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship. Andrade, who has lost the title since then, will be hoping that a win here puts her back into title contention, with Namajunas likely feeling the same in way in what will be her first outing since losing the championship.

Former featherweight kingpin Max Holloway will be trying to get right into the title picture when takes on a fighter on a 14-fight winning streak, Zabit Magomedsharipov. A win for Holloway could very well put him in place for a chance to regain his featherweight title, while a win for Magomedsharipov, over the former champion, could see him be the one who earns himself a title shot.

In other main card action, Santiago Ponzinibbio rides a 7-fight win streak into action against former contender Stephen Thompson, and the PPV kicks off with a big fight in the middleweight division as Uriah Hall takes on Ronaldo Souza.

<p>Announcement of UFC on ESPN 8</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="vsaa7XB.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/vsaa7XB.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:24px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Announcement of UFC on ESPN 8 </span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

UFC on ESPN 8 will be headlined by UFC Bantamweight Champion Henry Cejudo defending his title against Dominick Cruz. </p><p> </p><p>

This will be Cejudo’s first defence of his title, which he claimed at UFC 238 with a win over Marlon Moraes; the title had been vacant going into their fight, with the former champion, TJ Dillashaw, being stripped of the title after failing a drug test. Cejudo will not have it easy in the ESPN headliner and many are even expecting the new champion to fall short, when he faces the fighter who many consider to be the greatest bantamweight of all time, Dominick Cruz.</p><p> </p><p>

Cruz lost the bantamweight title in his last fight, to Cody Garbrandt, but has been out of action ever since, a forced hiatus of over three years. Yet this didn’t deter Cejduo from calling out the man who many call the greatest bantamweight in MMA history, and perhaps it’s that unofficial title that Cejudo is hoping to win, to add to his official title, when he takes on Cruz in this ESPN main event.</p><p> </p><p>

The co-main event of the evening will see the next contender to the bantamweight title established as Aljamain Sterling takes on the hottest young bantamweight in the UFC, Petr Yan. </p><p> </p><p>

Sterling comes into the fight on a four-fight win streak, while Yan is on nine-fight win streak, with his last victor being a sensational knockout win over the legendary Urijah Faber. Victory for either fighter will cement their status as the next contender to the UFC Bantamweight Championship, and whoever wins this fight will be watching the main event with keen interest.</p><p> </p><p>

We’ll have a heavyweight slugfest on the card as Curtis Blaydes faces Walt Harris. A top featherweight showdown will see Brian Ortega looking to rebound from an unsuccessful title challenge when he takes on Yair Rodriguez, who is looking to establish himself as a top contender. The rematch from a highly controversial outing at UFC Fight Night 169 sees Magomed Ankalae once more take on Ion Cuțelaba. Their first fight ended with a premature stoppage, one widely condemned throughout the MMA community, and both will be trying to make sure that there is no such controversy this time around.</p><p> </p><p>

And the main card kicks off with another rematch, this time in the lightweight division as Donald Cerrone will look to avenge a prior loss to Anthony Pettis.</p><p> </p><p>

Announcement of UFC Fight Night 172

The UFC is heading to Utah for Fight Night action and it has an intriguing main event, a rematch in the light heavyweight division, as Corey Anderson takes on Mauricio Rua.

Corey Anderson was just one win away from a title fight before falling in defeat at the hands of Jan Błachowicz, and he needs to re-establish himself as a light heavyweight contender. But, to do that, he must get past a former adversary, a legend who is experiencing a career resurgence. Something he is all too familiar with.

Once thought of as a legend in his fading years, Mauricio Rua has now gone 4-1-1 in his last six fights, with one of those victories coming against an opponent he must now face again. Another victory will give Rua his best run of form in almost fifteen years, and a decisive victory may even put him near the ranks of the contenders. For Rua, a return to the top of the light heavyweight division would have once seemed like a pipe dream. Now, however, it’s looking increasingly like a reality.

Who will walk out of Utah with their dreams of light heavyweight contendership intact?

In the co-main event, Paul Felder looks to bounce back from a hard-fought split-decision loss to Dan Hooker, as he takes on top lightweight Kevin Lee. Felder, who had won two straight before the setback against Hooker, will be facing an opponent who is looking to come back from his own setback. Lee had all the momentum in the world coming off one of the highlight reel finishes of the year when he knocked out Gregor Gillespie at the famed Madison Square Garden. But a submission loss to Charles Oliveira halted that momentum, and now Lee is aiming to rebuild that momentum at the expense of the ‘Irish Dragon’.

Also needing to rebuild momentum, and desperately, is former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt. After going 10-0 and unseating Dominick Cruz to become champion, Cody Garbrandt seemed set to have a long reign. But a stunning second-round knockout loss to T.J Dillashaw abruptly ended Cody’s reign, a loss which was followed by back-to-back first-round knockout losses to Dillashaw again and then Pedro Munhoz. In short order, Cody Garbrandt has gone from future standard bearer to also-ran, and if Cody is ever going to put his career back on track, he needs to beat Jimmie Rivera.

His opponent, Jimmie Rivera, is in the same position as Cody.

Jimmie Rivera amassed a remarkable 20-fight winning streak that stretched back over nine years, but that incredible run of form came to an end in just 33 seconds, after a brutal headkick from Marlon Moraes. And while Jimmie won his next fight, he lost the two after that, the first time Rivera had ever lost back-to-back fights. Now, Rivera is also in the position of being a sure-fire superstar who has seen his career falter, and he too is badly in need of a victory.

But only one of them will get the win they badly need. Who will it be?

The rest of the main card sees flyweight action as Rogério Bontorin faces Kai Kara-France. A potentially bruising heavyweight showdown is set between Augusto Sakai and Alexander Volkov. And the main card kicks off with a fight in the featherweight divison, with Shane Burgos taking on Josh Emmet.

Announcement of UFC 250

Announcement of UFC 250

The UFC announced that UFC 250 will be titled Violence in Vegas and will be headlined by a fight that is assured to live up the billing as the main event of UFC 250 will see ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor take on an opponent equally notorious, for exciting battles, as he will face Justin Gaethje.

McGregor’s return to the octagon in January lasted less than a minute, with McGregor needing a scant 40-seconds to dispatch Donald Cerrone via TKO. Gaethje comes into this fight, the biggest of his entire career, on a three fight winning streak. Ironically, Gaethje’s last victory also came over Cerrone, although with his victory coming in a ‘lengthy’ 4:17 fight, you can be sure that the always-cocky McGregor will be using his superior victory team in the lead-up to the fight to taunt his opponent.

The UFC also announced that the winner of the main event of UFC 250 will be getting a shot at the UFC Lightweight Championship, with officials hoping for that title fight to headline their December PPV.

In the co-main event of UFC 250, the UFC Heavyweight Championship will be on the line as reigning champion Stipe Miocic defends his title against the man who had previously taken the title away from him, Daniel Cormier. Miocic subsequently regained the title from Cormier, so this will their trilogy making fight, a fight that will likely put an end to their rivalry with both men hoping to come out on top as the UFC’s heavyweight kingpin.

And to show just how loaded this card is, we will also see the UFC’s Women’s Featherweight Champion in action, as Amanda Nunes defends her title against Felicia Spencer. ‘The Lioness’ will be making the first defence of her title, a championship she ripped away from Cris Cyborg in a fight that lasted a mere 51-seconds. Felicia Spencer will provide a tough challenger, with Spencer having taken Cyborg the distance in a fight that nobody expected Spencer to last more than a minute in. Spencer followed that showing with a brutal beatdown of Zarah Fairn dos Santos, and Spencer will be once more hoping to upset the odds and this time walk away with UFC gold.

Also on the card, the loudmouth and braggadocios Colby Covington will take on the always-dangerous Neil Magny. Covington is coming back after tasting bitter defeat at the hands of welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, but he won’t have it easy because Magny is looking to re-establish his name after an enforced absence and a victory Covington would put the entire division on notice.

Rising welterweight contender Gilbert Burns, fresh off of a victory over Demian Maia, will take on Geoff Neal, and a decisive win for either fighter could potentially see them face the winner of Covington/Magny for the chance at a crack at Kamaru Usman’s title.

And it’s a home-state homecoming in the opener to the main card as Paige Van Zant takes on Andrea Lee.

Announcement of UFC Fight Night 173

The UFC returns to Alabama and the headline attraction promises to be one of the most bruising encounters of the year as Derrick Lewis faces Alistair Overeem.

Derrick Lewis and Alistair Overeem have both fought their way to a title shot, and whilst they both came up short in their title fights, that hasn’t deterred both men from trying to fight their back into contendership for another chance at heavyweight glory. For Lewis, a victory against Overeem would earn him his third win in a row, and a decisive victory may even put him in the mix for a title. Yet Overeem is coming off a devastating loss to Jair Rozenstruik, and a win against Lewis would reaffirm that the Dutch fighter is still a force in the UFC’s heavyweight division.

In the co-main event, it’s the classic battle of striker vs. grappler, as dangerous knockout artist Francis Ngannou battles submission master Aleksei Oleinik. This fight will come down to one simple thing; can Oleinik trap Ngannou in one of his famed submissions before Ngannou lands one of his devastating punches? If Oleinik gets Ngannou in a submission, the fight is over. If Ngannou lands that big right hand, the fight is over. Will either of these fighters be able to get the opening they need to end this fight in an instant?

Also on the card, prospective lightweight contender Carlos Diego Ferreira puts his 6-fight winning streak on the line against Alexander Hernandez. Hernandez was himself seen as a prospective contender before falling short in a Fight of the Night outing against Donald Cerrone at UFC Fight Night 143; Hernandez bounced back with a victory over Francisco Trinaldo and win over Ferreira may see Hernandez being the one who puts himself in title contention. For both fighters, a win here is vital if they wish to continue up the ladder in the UFC’s most loaded division.

Elsewhere, a pair of middleweight showdowns will pit Antonio Carlos Junior against Brad Tavares and Krzysztof Jotko against Edmen Shahbazyan, and, opening up the main card, Warrley Alves takes on Niko Price.

Announcement of UFC Fight Night 174

The UFC comes to South Dakota for a UFC Fight Night that will be headlined by a clash in the lightweight division, as Beneil Dariush will take on Dustin Poirier.

Beneil Dariush is one of the top competitors in the UFC’s most talent-stacked division, and carries tremendous momentum into this contest; not only has he won four fights in a row, but his last three fights have seen Dariush earn a Performance of the Night bonus. Boasting a dangerous ground game and an ever-improving striking game, Beneil Dariush is a serious threat to everyone in the lightweight division, and a definitive victory over ‘The Diamond’ would put Dariush in contention for a possible title shot.

Dustin Poirier may be coming off an unsuccessful challenge of the most dominant lightweight champion of all time, but he still has his own impressive run coming into this main event. Before the Khabib loss, Poirier was 5-0 (with one no-contest), a stretch that includes one Performance of the Night award and four Fight of the Night awards. Poirier posses dangerous stand-up that is a threat to anyone in the division, and his ground skills make him a threat on the mat as well. For Poirier, a victory over Beneil Dariush will remind people that he is still a championship-calibre competitor, and keep him in the mix for title contendership.

The lightweight division also features in the co-main event, with Dan Hooker facing Islam Makhachev.

Hooker is fresh off of one of the best fights of the year, against Paul Felder, and is 7-1 in his last eight fights, with only two of those fights going the distance. Meanwhile, Makhachev, is on a six fight winning streak with an overall record of 19-1, and is seen as a rising force in the lightweight division.

For either man, a victory will continue to show that they are someone to reckon with in the deepest division in the UFC.

Elsewhere on the main card, submission specialist Ryan Hall takes on Dan Ige. Marlon Moraes tries to maintain his standing in the bantamweight division against the hot Pedro Munhoz. In flyweight action, Brandon Moreno faces Alex Perez. And the main card kicks off in the women’s strawweight division as former champion Carla Esparza fights the dangerous Brazilian Livia Renata Souza

<p>Announcement of UFC Fight Night 175</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="vsaa7XB.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/vsaa7XB.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:24px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Announcement of UFC Fight Night 175</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

The UFC comes to South Carolina for a Fight Night that will feature a main event in the light heavyweight division, as red-hot contender Jan Błachowicz takes on the former title challenger Glover Teixeira.</p><p> </p><p>

Błachowicz and Teixeira share similar stories, with both of their careers currently on an upward trajectory. Błachowicz is 7-1 in his last eight fights, with two of his last three fights earning him a Performance of the Night bonus. Meanwhile, Teixeira is 4-1 in his last five fights, with one of those fights earning a Performance of the Night bonus. Both fighters are getting closer to a light heavyweight title shot; for Błachowicz, a win may even earn him that title shot, which would be his first ever, while Teixeira has long wanted a second chance to claim championship gold. </p><p> </p><p>

The winner of this main event could find themselves within reach of the title shot they’re desperately after, while the loser will see their hopes dashed, so there is a lot on the line in the main event of this UFC Fight Night.</p><p> </p><p>

The co-main event is another battle of the ‘old guard’ versus the ‘new guard’, as former title contender John Dodson takes on a burgeoning superstar in the bantamweight division, Cory Sandhagen.</p><p> </p><p>

Since challenging for the flyweight title, Dodson’s career has somewhat stagnated, going 4-4, and a victory, which would be his second in a row, would help to show that Dodson is still a viable force in the UFC. But he’ll be taking on a bantamweight contender who has all the momentum in the world; Sandhagen has won seven straight fights, a run that includes a Performance of the Night bonus and four consecutive TKO victories.</p><p> </p><p>

For Dodson, his back is against the wall, the odds against him, yet Sandhagen, the favourite, must be careful not to let overconfidence set up a defeat that would derail the momentum he’s fought so hard to build. </p><p> </p><p>

Polish light heavyweight sensation Jiri Prochzaka, who is on a ten-fight winning streak, makes his eagerly anticipated UFC debut against former light heavyweight title challenger Ovince St. Preux. Davi Ramos, who snapped his four-fight winnings streak last time out will take on the always dangerous Francisco Trinaldo.</p><p> </p><p>

In a battle of generational legends in the heavyweight division, Junior Dos Santos takes on Andrei Arlovski. </p><p> </p><p>

And the main card kicks off with Ed Herman taking on one of the legendary Nogueira brothers, as he faces Antônio Rogério Nogueira.</p><p> </p><p>

<p>Announcement of UFC 251</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="vsaa7XB.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/vsaa7XB.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:24px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Announcement of UFC 251</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

The UFC today announced that UFC 251, titled Night of the Nightmare, will by headlined by UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman defending his title against Jorge Masvidal.</p><p> </p><p>

Usman will be making the second defence of his welterweight title against the ‘BMF Champion’, Jorge Masvidal. Usman completely dominated Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 to win the title, dominating Woodley in a way that nobody expected and that nobody has ever seen, Woodley then retained his title against Colby Covington in a Fight of the Night war at UFC 245. Now, Woodley is looking to make another successful defence of his title, but he’ll be facing the challenge of the hottest welterweight on the UFC roster.</p><p> </p><p>

Jorge Masvidal was just another name rising up the welterweight ranks, and then he delivered the flying knee seen around the world at UFC 239 when he knocked out Ben Askren in just five seconds, setting a record for the fastest knockout in UFC history. Masvidal went from one of the pack to breaking out of the pack, and he was now the hottest welterweight on the roster. Masvidal then found himself headlining the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, when he faced Nate Diaz for the unofficial ‘BMF’ title belt.</p><p> </p><p>

Masvidal dominated Diaz en route to a stoppage victory, and he now goes from fighting for an unofficial title to fighting for an official title, when he challenges Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC 251.</p><p> </p><p>

In the co-main event, Valentina Shevchenko will defend the UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship against Joanne Calderwood.</p><p> </p><p>

Shevchenko is dangerous striker, possessing some of the most brutal kicks in the sport, kicks which saw her deliver the most spectacular knockout in women’s MMA history when she knocked out Jessica Eye at UFC 238. Shevchenko also has an underrated ground game, and she may need that aspect of her skillset when she takes on one of the few fighters in her division to have a striking pedigree that matches her own.</p><p> </p><p>

Joanne Calderwood is a highly trained Muay Thai practitioner, with over a decade of experience in the sport, experience that has allowed Calderwood to hone her striking skills and make her as dangerous an opponent as any that Valentina Shevchenko has faced. She may go into the fight as the underdog, but Calderwood has the skills and training that make her more than capable of pulling off the upset and making her Scotland’s first ever UFC champion.</p><p> </p><p>

Also in action at UFC 251 will be former middleweight kingpin Robert Whittaker, as he’ll be facing off against Kelvin Gastelum. This will be Whittaker’s first fight since losing his middleweight crown, and the former champion will undoubtedly be looking to reaffirm his status as one of the top middleweight fighters in the world, as Gastelum will be desperate to put an end to a two-fight skid and will be in the mood to player spoiler for the former champion’s return.</p><p> </p><p>

Rounding out this stacked card are three great fights; two potential contenders in the women’s strawweight division will fight when two-time challenger Cláudia Gadelha takes on the undefeated Tatiana Suarez. In the lightweight division, ‘Ragin’ Al Iaquinta battles Charles Oliveira. And the main card kicks off with two legends facing off, when former middleweight champion Robbie Lawler faces TUF 1 winner Diego Sanchez.</p><p> </p><p>
